“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”

“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

Here’s to George Washington!

T

he United States will turn 246 this year. This is cause for celebration. We live in the world’s longest-running representative democracy since Julius Caesar ended the Roman Republic over 2,000 years ago.

Our country’s ability to evolve with the times while maintaining its constitutional government is one of the keys to our long-lasting success. In large part, we have George Washington to thank for that. Washington was an extraordinarily popular figure following the end of the Revolutionary War and many people were calling for a strong executive to serve as President. While they did not want a king, many wanted a “strong” leader with king-like powers. If Washington chose to consolidate power during his early days as President, rather than humbly focusing on establishing a democracy, history could have turned out very differently. This is precisely what happened in France just three years after Washington left office. Napoleon Bonaparte quickly morphed his role as First Consul of France into the lifetime Emperor of France. It is easy to imagine decades of unrest and conflict had Washington had similar ambitions. While we watch the fireworks and celebrate Independence Day this year, lets give a nod of gratitude to our first President. George Washington set the example for every American leader. We all can aspire to his humility and deep belief in duty, especially our elected officials. Sincerely,

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

Planning for the Unexpected

I

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

t’s Tuesday morning. Your husband’s flight to Venezuela just departed. In the family room, 2-year-old Sophia is amusing herself while waiting for Jennifer, your new 16-year-old neighbor who has been babysitting a few mornings this summer. It’s your special time to run errands or get in some exercise. Today is the perfect day to try out a new pair of rollerblades. Lace-up. Earbuds in. Sunscreen on. You tell Jennifer you’ll be back in about 90 minutes and off you go to the local park. It’s unusually quiet this morning. While skating along at a fast pace, you hit a rock, lose your balance and fly wildly out of control into a swale of high grass, where your phone ends up behind a bush and you hit your head. Everything goes dark… Thankfully, a jogger finds you and calls 911. You are transported to a hospital but are unconscious. With no identification, the hospital doesn’t know who you are or whom to call. Hours later, Jennifer becomes concerned when you don’t return home as expected. She calls your cell phone, but there’s no answer. She also tries your husband’s number which goes directly to voice mail. Afternoon arrives and Jennifer begins to really worry. She has plans of her own, and you were supposed to be home hours ago. What should she do? She calls her own mother who advises, “Call the police.” Two uniformed officers arrive and ask questions. They check police reports and hospitals. There is an unidentified woman at a local hospital who may be the missing mom, but she is unconscious. The police evaluate the situation and determine there is no family member present to take care of Sophia. What happens next is a parent’s nightmare. Your daughter is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Is our story far-fetched? Probably. But while this type of scenario is not likely to happen to your family, it reminds us to make sure we plan for the unexpected. At a minimum, every family should have standard written babysitter instructions which include contact information for family members and friends who should be contacted if parents cannot be reached. In addition, an attorney can help to prepare a Power of Attorney for Childcare, authorization for the care, custody, medical care, and even travel for your minor children. It is certainly not necessary to consult an attorney to put together babysitter instructions. This is something that parents can create on their own. However, other legal documents are best drafted by an experienced estate planning attorney who can offer counsel and ensure that documents are properly prepared and executed. You want to make sure your legal documents work when you need them. Having a family plan for the unexpected may help keep small incidents from becoming big problems.

Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

WESTON STUDENTS JOIN NATIONWIDE MOVEMENT TO

n the wake of the nation’s most recent school shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, a group of Cypress Bay High School Students helped organize Weston’s participation in The March for Our Lives. The Weston event was part of a national network of marches originally organized by former students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School, the site of Florida’s worst school shooting. “After other students and I organized in Weston in 2018 after the Parkland tragedy, we felt it was important to organize once again this year after the Buffalo and Uvalde shootings to remind people that the gun violence epidemic is still pervasive,” said Cypress Bay graduation senior Gowri Abhinanda, “we wanted to organize in hopes of starting important conversations regarding gun violence again so that our legislators know we haven't forgotten and they need to act.” The peaceful rally occurred on June 11 from 9 AM to 11 AM at Weston Library Park. 250 to 300 people from Weston attended, including State Representative Robin Bartleman. The event included all-student speakers, poets, and singers from Cypress Bay High School, Western High School, Tequesta Trace Middle School, and the University of Florida. "We deserve not to have our lives at risk when we walk into public spaces, especially schools,” said organizer and Cypress Bay graduating senior Ryan Cameron, “I am thankful for everyone in Weston that showed up and were jolted awake by the need to advocate for our laws to change and to end the violence that has taken so many lives." The march organizers are advocating for six changes: universal background checks, raising

the age for firearm ownership to 21, banning weapons of war, implementing red flag laws, investing in community-based initiatives to address domestic violence and mental health and advocating for underrepresented groups affected by gun violence. Cypress Bay junior, Daniela Carrasco spoke at the rally about universal background checks, “These could bring up very important reasons not to give a gun to someone. Look at the shooters in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Oklahoma. Police took (the) Buffalo shooter for a mental health evaluation; the Uvalde shooter had the police called on him multiple times and had displayed violent behaviors, such as shooting people with a BB gun. They both had made their intentions very clear on social media, yet they were still able to purchase these weapons with ease." March For Our Lives is an organization that was created in the days after the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The youth-led organization is focused on a broad set of policy goals with the objective of making the country a safer place and less prone to violence.

Don’t Let Mosquitos Bite!

osquito season is here again. As the summer rains come and go, it’s time to take preventative measures to safeguard yourself and your home. Help reduced mosquito breeding habitats by eliminating standing water in and around your property. The life cycle of a mosquito is approximately seven days. They can breed in small amounts of water that collect in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains and in plants such as bromeliads.

Regularly dump anything that holds water. If it's too large to be dumped, apply larvicide to keep the mosquito larvae from developing. Some mosquitoes, such as the variety that carries the Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, breed indoors and outdoors and bite anytime of the day or night. If you go outdoors on a buggy night, wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. Spray your skin and clothing with an insect repellent that contains DEET or other approved ingredients.

Draining standing water is the most effective way to stop them from reproducing. “Mosquitoes multiply quickly, but you can stop them in their tracks,” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. “Practice ‘drain and cover.’ When you dump standing water, you eliminate the breeding ground for mosquito larvae and getting rid of the source is the best way to avoid being bitten.” Mosquito eggs that are laid in shallow water can hatch in a day or two. The larvae grow fast, turning into a pupa that quickly develops into a full-grown mosquito. The life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes eight to 10 days. The pupae become flying mosquitoes in two to three days.

MAKE OUR SCHOOLS SAFE DONATES 298 ‘STOP THE BLEED’ KITS TO CYPRESS BAY

M

ake Our Schools Safe donated 298 ‘Stop the Bleed’ kits to Cypress Bay High School at a Press Conference at Weston City Hall last month. Make Our Schools Safe is a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting students and teachers at school. The charity’s mission is to empower students and staff to help create and maintain a culture of safety and vigilance in a secure school environment. The foundation collaborates with highlevel security advisors to offer survival information for protection in emergencies. The focus on bringing these skills to schools so teachers feel confident to protect their students and themselves. Make Our Schools Safe was born out of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre on Valentine’s Day 2018, when the foundation’s founders lost their beautiful 14-year-old daughter, Alyssa Alhadeff. The donation was made possible by a group of Cypress Bay students. The students raised money so every classroom can have a

kit in the event of a shooting or other emergencies, One of the students who started a club at the school stressed the importance of having these kits. “Having a Stop The Bleed kit in every classroom means that as soon as a student or teacher or administration is shot, the Stop The Bleed kit can clog the blood immediately and hopefully save a person’s life,” said a student.

■ CAN DO KID

CYPRESS BAY JUNIOR HEADS TO FIU

FOR A UNIQUE SENIOR YEAR By Terry Jaillet

A

ndre Quintero is an industrious kid. The honor roll student, who just completed his junior year at Cypress Bay High School, has always been eager to learn and is consistently looking for opportunities to better himself. The first-generation American, whose parents emigrated from Colombia, just blazed a new trail for Cypress Bay students by enrolling at Florida International University (FIU), while still in High School. Andre is incredibly driven and set a goal of graduating early from high school. During the pandemic, he took advantage of some of the dual enrollment classes taught online and was on track to finish all high school requirements by the end of his junior year. Andre learned about a unique program offered by FIU where exceptional high school juniors may request early admission to the school. Students who qualify for early admission do not complete their senior year of high school or earn their high school diploma; instead, they begin their first year of college at FIU. The highly competitive program is only available to A students who score a minimum of 1380 on the SAT and receive a letter from their high school principal or guidance counselor stating specific reasons why they would benefit more from early admission to college rather than completing their senior year of high school. Andre is the first Cypress Bay student to participate in the program. He went through an extensive interview process before being admitted. Next semester, he will be a Cypress High School senior student who is attending FIU full time.

The Florida International University Early Admission Program is available to exceptional high school juniors. To learn more about applying visit https://admissions.fiu.edu/how-to-apply/ high-school-student/

Colombians Vote For President in Weston

S

outh Florida’s Colombian community got the opportunity to cast their votes for the next President of Colombia last month. Colombian citizens who are registered to vote got the opportunity to exercise that right at Cypress Bay High School during an historic Presidential election. According to the Colombian Consul General, Pedro Augstin Valencia, more than 50,000 Colombians living in South Florida cast votes in the election. The Colombian government set

up voting locations across Florida with sites in Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa. Lines at Cypress Bay were long at the high school as Colombian ex-pats voted for President. None of the candidates earned over 50% of the vote, causing a runoff election on June 21st. The results of that election were surprising to many around the world with former rebel Gustavo Petro narrowly defeating Rodolfo Hernandez by just 2%. Petro will be Colombia’s first leftist president

and ushers in a drastic change for the country’s politics. He was a one-time leader of the now-defunct rebel group M-19 but was granted amnesty after being imprisoned for his involvement in the organization. Outgoing conservative President Ivan Duqe congratulated the newly elected president after Hernandez conceded defeat. "I accept the results as it should be if we want our institutions to be firm," Hernandez said, "I sincerely hope that this decision is beneficial to everyone." The vote came amongst widespread discontent in the country over inflation, violent crime and income inequality. Two of the three largest Latin American countries are now governed by leftist regimes.

Thank You, Volunteers!

O

n May 17th, 2022, at the Carolina Ale House, the Arts Council of Greater Weston held its annual reception to thank the many, many volunteers who make possible community events so enjoyed by our residents. Adult volunteers were in attendance from all Arts Council events including the Foreign Film Series, Chalk in the Park, Celebrate the Arts, Weston World Fest, Student Artist Showcase, and the Summer Instagram Photo Contest. President Laura Dobrzanski expressed her appreciation for their dedication and service. “Without all of the volunteers who participate with us every year, we could not put on the number and quality of events we bring to our residents.” Over 100 attendees were able to mingle and enjoy light appetizers on the outdoor patio. Members from Arts Council partner organizations including the Weston Music Society, Young at Art, and the Weston Art Guild were present. Retiring Arts Council board member Claudina Fernandez was honored for her efforts over the years in coordinating student volunteers for all events and for creating the Arts Council Volunteer Service Award program for students. Vice President Carol Lema remarked, “We are extremely lucky to have dedicated board members like Claudina who create, direct, and assist with the events, combined with our large volunteer community. This allows us to provide arts and culture events in Weston which are either free or affordable for the public.” Many of the City Commissioners, Officials, and City Staff stopped by to thank everyone and join in on the fun. If you would like to see pictures from the event, photos are available on our website.

If you want to help with next year’s programs, visit the Arts Council website www.1weston.com.

Broward Students Celebrate National Merit Scholarships

T

he National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 17 Broward County seniors recipients of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.7 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states. Fewer than 8,000 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. The winners are selected on a state-by-state basis and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar.

Broward’s winners include:

• Francisco Alvarez Clemente of Cypress Bay High School • Andrei Chekmasov of Cypress Bay High School • Abhishek Suresh of Miramar High School • Madison Draizin of NSU University High School • Nicole Steinberg of NSU University High School • Ralph Curra of St. Thomas Aquinas High School • Matthew Khoriaty of Pine Crest School • Bruce Kolettis of Pine Crest School • Adam Peles of Pine Crest School • Soha Bhutta of American Heritage Schools • Charlotte Caddell of American Heritage Schools • Odin Farkas of American Heritage Schools • Emilin Mathew of American Heritage Schools • Eva Victoria Pierre-Antoine of American Heritage Schools • Christiana Zhang of American Heritage Schools • Albert Wang - Homeschool Weston In addition, three Cypress Bay High School seniors were named

■ POSITIVE PARENTING

STAYING HEALTHY IN PRESCHOOL By Ivis Mateos

W

e are living through a time period when viruses and germs are the new topic of interest wherever you go. For us in the preschool environment, this topic is one we deal with just about every day. One of the top concerns parents have when enrolling their children in preschool, is whether or not their children will get sick. Well, I will confirm that THEY WILL GET SICK, if they are human. Getting exposed to other young humans that have boogers, saliva, and love to eat and stick anything they can get their hands on in their mouth, is inevitable in any environment where a group of children as well as adults may gather. However, I can assure you there's no need to panic. First, let's go over building a strong immune system and immunity to viruses and accepting germs are like our best friends. “Our immune system is a series of cells, tissues and organs that, throughout our lifetime, protects us from different invading

pathogens and keeps us healthy and able to resist many repeated infections,” says Dr. Ashouri, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at CHOC. “When babies are infants, they get immune cells from mom through the placenta and breast milk, if they are breastfeeding. Over time, the baby’s system becomes mature and can fight off infections.” When a parent worries about their child getting “sick” I like to remind them that sick is not necessarily a bad thing, children build immunity from exposure to different environments and people, and sometimes they get fevers, develop mucus, sneezing, coughing etc. all of these things are reactions and expressions of the process the body is expressing in order to begin building a resistance to whatever is trying to invade their body, thus creating a stronger immune system for future exposures and tolerance to a cold, virus, allergy etc. As we get to know our children better & with the help of health professionals, we learn to identify a common cold vs a more serious infection and when necessary,

seek professional help to aid in the healing process. However, we should learn to trust the power of our immune system and the important role germs or microbes play in our lives. A Harvard published article explains that “Diversity is the key to beneficial microbial populations. Not only does a wider array of microbes mean a greater variety of bacterial byproducts for body cells to use, it also leaves less territory for disease-causing bacteria to occupy. That's why the new approach to microbes is directed at maintaining a healthy balance of germs throughout the body-The microorganisms that inhabit your body can be valuable allies in reducing inflammation and treating disease.” Source: health.harvard.edu. In essence, good health comes as the child develops immunity with time through natural environment exposure, good nutrition, a balanced emotional health and parents' understanding of the powerful innate intelligence their children are born with. Children are resilient little humans, trust the process.

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. Arthroscopy of the Foot & Ankle By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

F

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weight-bearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion.

CONDITIONS TREATED: ADVANTAGES:

1. Chronic joint pain and swelling - Faster recovery 2. Arthritis and bone spurs - Less pain and swelling 3. Loose bone and cartilage fragments - Avoids large incisions 4. Stiff, scarred joints - Low risk of infection 5. Ankle fractures that have not completely - Outpatient procedures recovered 6. Quicker return to activities Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible.

FLOATERS & SPOTS By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician

F

loaters—or spots—are small, semi-transparent, or cloudy particles within the vitreous, which is the clear, jelly-like fluid that fills the inside of the eye. The spots can appear as specks of various shapes and sizes, threadlike strands, or cobwebs. These spots can appear as specks of various shapes and sizes, threadlike strands or cobwebs in the field of vision caused by particles floating in the fluid that fills the inside of the eye. Because they are in the eyes, they move as your eyes move and seem to dart away when you try to look at them directly. Spots are often caused by small flecks of protein or other matter that became trapped when your eyes formed before birth. They can also appear as the vitreous fluid deteriorates due to aging. Also, certain eye diseases or injuries can cause the appearance of spots. Most spots are not harmful, and they rarely limit vision. However, spots can be an indication of a more serious problem. See a doctor of optometry for a comprehensive examination if you suddenly start seeing more spots, especially in your central vision. A doctor of optometry can determine if what you are seeing is harmless or the symptom of a more serious problem that requires treatment.

Symptoms

These spots can appear as specks of various shapes and sizes, threadlike strands or cobwebs. Because they are in your eyes, they move as your eyes move and seem to dart away when you try to look at them directly. Floaters and spots rarely affect vision. If accompanied by flashes or a sudden occurrence—this may be a more serious problem and require an immediate eye examination by a doctor of optometry.

Diagnosis & treatment

A doctor of optometry can determine if what you are seeing is harmless or the symptom of a more serious problem that requires treatment. If the issue is related to a more serious problem, surgical management might be necessary.

Great Putting Tips to Build Confidence and

Lower Your Score! By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

G

ood putting requires complete conviction. Here’s a simple drill to inspire confidence for holing more putts. It’s also a good lesson for beginners to get a feel for the ball going in the hole. Start by holing a one-foot putt. Then increase the distance by one foot until you miss: go to two feet, three feet and so on. See how far back you can go until you miss. When you do miss, start over at the one-foot distance. Try it on breaking putts as well as uphill and downhill putts. If you get out to eight feet without missing, pat yourself on the back. If you’re struggling to get past two or three feet, try to clear your mind of too many thoughts, and just concentrate on making a firm, decisive stroke—accelerating the putter head through the ball. The more shots you make, the more confident you’ll be when you leave the practice green.

Make Center Contact and Keep Your Head Down

Short putts are all too easy to miss, at any level of the game. But two simple things can help you make more of them. First, try to hit the middle of the ball in the middle of the putter face. To make center contact, align the side-stamp of the ball with the aim

mark on your putter. Almost all putters today are designed with the sweet spot behind that alignment aid. Next, when you stroke the putt, keep your head down for a count of at least one second after the ball is gone. You might want to think to yourself one-thousand one before looking up, especially on a must-make putt. You would be surprised how often these two fundamentals are neglected. But sticking to them will make you a better putter.

Get Low and Keep Your Eyes Level on Long Putts

Have you ever had the feeling you’re going to make a long putt—and then made it? Sometimes you’re unsure of how a putt will break, but you still have to pick a line and stroke the ball on that line with assurance. Check a putt from behind the hole, from the side, and finally from behind the ball. I try to get as low as I can and keep my eyes level. The No. 1 reason for missing putts is poor alignment of the putter face. I would always want to visualize not only seeing the line but build confidence in my mind of seeing the ball rolling into the hole. That’s why visualizing the ball tracking on your line will improve your chances of making a putt. I highly recommend spending more time on the practice green prior to going out on the course to build your confidence and not have to warm up on the golf course after putting on the first few holes and thus scoring higher than you should have if you practiced prior to teeing off.

■ ANIMAL HEALTH

EXERCISING YOUR DOG By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM

Benefits

Exercise can have many health benefits for your dog. Regular exercise burns calories, reduces appetite, improves muscle tone, increases metabolism, and improves temperature regulation. It can be a valuable contributor to weight loss and maintenance. Exercise can also help stimulate your dog’s mind, thereby preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.

Needs and Precautions

Individual exercise needs vary based on breed or breed mix, sex, age, and level of health. If your dog is a 6- to 18-month adolescent or a sporting, herding, hound, or terrier breed or mixed breed, your dog’s exercise requirements are high. However, strenuous exercise can cause problems in some dogs, especially those that are not fit or are very young or old. Athletic owners should consider this to avoid overexerting their dogs, especially in hot or humid weather. When starting a new exercise routine, go slowly for the first week to give your dog a chance to adapt to it. On hot or cold days, go easy or rest. Consult your

veterinarian before beginning an exercise program for your dog.

ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise throughout the day.

Get Moving

Low-Calorie Dog Treats

Various kinds of exercise can help satisfy your dog's instinctive urges to dig, herd, chew, retrieve, and chase. Here are some good exercise options for most dogs:

or jogging ▸ Walking ▸ Fetch with other pets ▸ Playing off-leash ▸ Running (great for arthritic dogs) ▸ Swimming for low-calorie treats (see the box ▸ Tricks for ideas) Tug of war if appropriate for your breed ▸ You can help your dog get plenty of

exercise by scheduling regular playtimes and walks. For walks, work up to a brisk, 10- to 20-minute walk or jog once or twice a day. If you don’t have time to walk your dog, hire a dog walker. Consider adopting another pet so that your dog has a playmate that encourages activity. If you don’t want to commit to a new pet, try scheduling regular visits with the pet of a friend or relative. Doggy day care centers can also help

slices ▸ Apple slices ▸ Banana slices ▸ Carrot dog treats (low-calorie or ▸ Commercial formulated for a smaller dog) beans ▸ Green meat (cooked) ▸ Lean (without butter or oil) ▸ Popcorn rice cake pieces ▸ Unflavored If your dog has food allergies, consult your veterinarian about which treats are safe and appropriate. Do not feed your dog (or cat) grapes or raisins because they have reportedly caused kidney problems in pets.

ver the last few months, many of my constituents have called me regarding issues with their homeowners’ insurance including their policies not being renewed and exorbitant increases in their insurance rates. In response, a Special Session was called in May to tackle the property insurance crisis. Although CS/SB 2-D is not perfect nor complete, it is legislation that is a step in the right direction. It helps stabilize the state’s insurance market by creating a “Reinsurance Assistance Program “(RAP) for insurance companies. Other reforms include: • Property insurers who utilize RAP must reduce policyholder premiums by June 30, 2022 to reflect their savings from the program • Creates the "My Safe Florida Home"; program to provide homeowners with insured home values of $500,000 or less with grant funds for home hardening improvements • Creates separate roof deductibles • Protects property owners from nonrenewal based on the age of their roof

I look forward to coming back next Session to improve upon homeowner’s insurance reform and strike a balance between stabilizing the marketplace for carriers to be available and protecting the consumer. It is important for you to know that experts believe consumers will not see the relief for 12-18 months. In response to the Surfside collapse, we

passed SB 4-D. This legislation requires mandatory building inspections at specific intervals, and, in 2024, a structural integrity reserve study will be a requisite for condo associations at least every ten years to prevent needed reserves from being waived. TRAINING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE By Sheriff Gregory Tony

O

ur nation has again experienced tragedy after multiple recent mass casualty shooting events in Buffalo, NY, Laguna Woods, CA and Uvalde, TX. As a community, we have learned about the value of training and preparedness after our own experiences at The FortLauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Training is necessary for any profession but critical for first responders. Their safety and the lives of those they have sworn to protect depend on it.

"We don't rise to the level of our expectations; we fall to the level of our training." – Archilochus I can tell you from experience no matter how mentally and physically prepared someone is, amid the emotion, adrenaline and urgency of the moment, the importance of training becomes immediately apparent. With more training comes increased discipline, readiness and clarity of purpose. Speed, efficiency and accuracy are improved when we repeat actions and rehearse scenarios. You can equip people

76 / Our City Weston / July 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

with the best tools, but they also need the knowledge and ability to use them effectively. Today, our in-house training programs are second to none. Since accepting command of the organization, the Broward Sheriff's Office has become the first agency in Florida to have a nationally certified active shooter training unit. We continually rotate our deputies through critical incident and crisis mitigation exercises to ensure they are ready for any incident. BSO's Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services continues to raise the bar by introducing specialized training tactics and skills to enhance performance. One such skill includes the ability to draft, which involves gathering water from a static source should a fire hydrant not be available. We have also prioritized Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for all deputies to engage more effectively with individuals experiencing a crisis or mental health issue. Currently, more than 60 percent of our Department of Law Enforcement deputies are CIT trained, which is more than double the national average, as well as 40 percent of our Department of Detention deputies. Additionally, 74 percent of all BSO employees, and 96 percent of all deputies, have completed the Racial Intelligence Training and Engagement course (RITE), which reinforces a bias-free workplace and teaches racial and cultural sensitivity and de-escalation techniques. Tactical performance, readiness and

professional development training are instrumental to preparedness in public safety and are offered at every level of our agency. We have established partnerships with top organizations and educational institutions to provide enhanced training for our sworn personnel and executive development for our command staff, managers and directors. Our comprehensive training approach has made BSO a flagship training organization and has attracted public safety professionals locally and nationally. Our progress will continue. The construction of our state-of-the-art training center is hitting a fevered pace. Once completed, the 103,000-square-foot facility will house all our training initiatives under one roof and usher in a new and exciting era at BSO. If you want to learn more about BSO and how we serve the community, we invite you to be a part of our Citizens Academy. The 10-week program combines classroom learning and hands-on exercises to experience everything our organization does to serve this community. Click here to learn more or visit www.sheriff.org. Internet Safety Month Targets

Keeping Children Safe Online

N

o parent in their right mind would drop off a child in the middle of Times Square or the Las Vegas Strip with little more than a safety talk and a directive to behave — but that is in essence what’s occurring when children are allowed to access the Internet, largely unsupervised and unprotected, on digital devices. Each Internet-capable device acts as an open door for millions of people, directly into your — and your child’s — life. An invaluable resource when used for education, entertainment, and discovery, parents must realize that the digital world is also a playground for skilled predators. Where kids go, so too do those who wish to harm them…which means digital devices pose a clear and present danger for kids. In fact, 1 in 5 children who touch a digital device is sexually solicited online. Chilling. Especially when you consider that more than a third of children under age 12 began interacting with a smartphone before they entered Kindergarten, and 20 percent of this same cohort have a smartphone of their own. While authorities and Internet watchdog groups across the world are doing all they can to crack down on online predation, parents and caregivers must be the first line of defense
