Despite massive progress in diagnosis and treatment, about 15% of those diagnosed will eventually succumb to the disease. But, there is hope. Over the past 45 years, the five-year survival rate has significantly increased for breast cancer patients. In fact, people with localized disease at the time of diagnosis now have a 99% five-year survival rate, while the survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer, that has spread beyond her breast, is just 28%. Early detection is perhaps the most important thing. The ABCF recommends women should regularly conduct self-examinations beginning in their 20s and receive annual mammograms beginning in their 40s. There are many new promising therapies being tested and developed. More important than a new miracle drug, however, is identifying a lump or change in your body. And, if you do detect something, seek medical help. It could make all the difference.

Debunking Myths about Breast Cancer By Alia Abdulla DO

Myth 1: Wearing a bra (with or without underwire) can cause breast cancer.

A study, published in 2014, looked at the correlation between breast cancer and bras. It found that the patients diagnosed with breast cancer were NOT RELATED TO BRAS. They did find that people who take hormone replacement therapy, have a first-degree family history of breast cancer, or who have not had children all are at higher risk for breast cancer, however.

Myth 2: Wearing antiperspirant or deodorant can cause breast cancer.

Some rumors say that underarm deodorants and antiperspirants, especially those containing aluminum and other chemicals, are absorbed into the lymph nodes and make their way into breast cells, increasing cancer risk. Shaving the underarms is said to make this worse by creating tiny nicks that allow more of the chemicals to enter the body. Some think that antiperspirants, by stopping underarm sweating, can prevent

the release of toxic substances from the underarm lymph nodes, also increasing cancer risk. There is no evidence of a link between antiperspirant use and breast cancer. Some studies have found that women who use aluminum products under their arms are more likely to have higher concentrations of aluminum in breast tissue.

Myth 3: Carrying your cell phone in your bra can cause breast cancer.

There is no evidence of a connection between cell phones and breast cancer, but the safety of cell phones is still being studied. The research isn’t there to support this claim but cell phone manufacturers often do recommend keeping your device away from your body as much as possible.

In addition, some studies have linked diabetes with a higher risk of breast cancer — especially more aggressive, later-stage cancers.

Myth 5: All breast cancer is treated pretty much the same way.

Treatment plans vary widely depending on the characteristics of the cancer and patient preferences. Many people have a vague idea that breast cancer requires some combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and maybe chemotherapy, but they don't know much beyond that. Q & A: Estate Planning & Home Ownership

have a will and it states that my home is being left to my children. Should I be concerned about probate? Yes. The reality is that your home, even if left to heirs in a will, cannot be legally sold without permission of the court, which means that your property must go through a probate administration. It is common knowledge that probate administration is costly and time consuming. Unfortunately, the process only moves as fast as the court dictates. My partner and I own our home together but we have not executed wills. What will happen to my home after I am gone? Most married couples own their home via ” tenants by the entireties,” and ownership transfers automatically to the surviving spouse. Once the surviving spouse passes, the home is subject to probate with ownership determined by the surviving spouse’s will, or if none, by the court. If a home is owned via “joint tenants with rights of survivorship” the deceased’s share will pass to the other joint owner, who may not be their spouse. Your situation can be addressed by consulting with an estate planning attorney who is also familiar with real estate matters. My spouse and I created a trust, but our attorney did not discuss our home ownership. Why? Addressing a client’s assets and assuring that they are not subject to probate is part of estate planning, often referred to as funding. In my practice, offering a blueprint for funding, including home ownership, is part of the process. Unfortunately, there are attorneys that create trusts and do not provide funding assistance. I recommend that you reach out to your estate planning attorney to ask about funding, addressing all of your assets including any real property you may own. So, how do I guarantee that my home is not subject to probate? There are several types of deeds that assure a home transfers to a new owner without the participation of the probate court. This is certainly not a do it yourself project, and should be done by someone who not only has experience with real property but understands the estate planning process. Your goal is to prevent problems down the road. My cousin sold his mom’s house after she died. She didn’t have a special deed, and he did not go through probate. How was he able to do this? Your cousin may have owned the house jointly with his mom, or she may have created a life estate deed naming your cousin as the remainderman. My spouse and I each have children from previous marriages. I’d like my home to eventually go to all our children. After I am gone, can my spouse change the deed so it only goes to her children? Yes, she can. With so many blended families, this is a common concern. But with creative planning, you can be assured that all children ultimately receive the house as an inheritance, regardless of which spouse passes first. roward County Public Schools (BCPS) launched a web-based dashboard to give parents up-to-date information on the number of within their school community who have tested positive for COVID-19. The dashboard, which is updated daily, can be broken down by students and faculty and is sortable by school.

BCPS created the dashboard to give as much transparency as possible to families with children in school. The district reopened with mask mandates at all schools. The school board has been in a public battle with Governor Ron Desantis over the board’s decision to require masks. According to the New Your Times’ Coronavirus Case Count, Broward County has seen an increasing number of new cases since June. The county as a whole is currently averaging more than 2,000 new cases a day, which is the highest level of new cases since the epidemic began. The Broward County Commission has also created several dashboards to help residents get up-to-date information. These include a map showing the percent of residents who are vaccinated and a report on hospital utilization.

Western High School Hosted 20TH ANNIVERSARY 9/11 MEMORIAL CEREMONY

estern High School Students came together to pay homage to the thousands who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Since 2002, the school has marked this day with a student-constructed memorial, which has served as a symbol for Western High students to host the We Will Never Forget ceremony. The monument replicates the Twin Towers, surrounded by the Pentagon, with a flagpole placed in the outline of the state of Pennsylvania. Local fire departments and law enforcement members participated in the “We Will Never Forget” ceremony alongside Western High JROTC, choral singers, band, and the Student Government Association.

“Today Western High School kept its promise that it made 20 years ago,” commented Western High School Principal Jimmy Arrojo, “we treat this event with great reverence and respect. This monument was designed and built by students.” He highlighted the fact that this was the first time in three years the school was able to hold the ceremony because of covid restrictions. Davie Mayor Judy Paul was also on hand, “Through all that devastation and all that destruction, these colors waived brightly in the air,” she commented, “and gave us the hope and the strength to continue.” The memorial was built in 2002 by sixteen students from Davie, Weston and Southwest Ranches as part of an engineering class. The ceremony takes

place annually on the September 11th or the closest school day to that date. Every aspect of the monument has significance. The seating area is in the shape of a pentagon, with two concrete pillars centered inside representing the World Trade Center towers. Behind the towers is a flagpole, its base imprinted in the shape of Pennsylvania.

Color Speaks Louder Than Words

The senior living community has become part of Dec My Room, a charitable program that personalizes hospital rooms for children who are admitted to a hospital for a prolonged amount of time. Many of these participating seniors have discovered their inner artistic talents as they draw and paint to put a smile on the families staying at local children’s hospitals. The wonderful idea of decorating childrens’ hospital rooms for those having longtime stays began in Texas by a mother-daughter duo. But it was Claire Cohen, daughter of Palace resident Joan Cohen, who suggested the project since she works with the non-profit organization. The Palace’s activities director Icela Guernica, who also happens to be the art instructor for Creative Corner, loved the idea and was immediately on board (both figuratively and literally). “Working with the charity has been a great way to creatively inspire our residents to participate,” said Guernica. “The painting projects are geared to be completed during

a class so there’s a greater sense of accomplishment and more immediate gratification. ig things are on the horizon for 16-year-old International Dance Academy (IDA) student Paula Zapata. The aspiring ballerina will be packing her slippers and moving to New York City to join the Jackie Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theater (ABT). The prestigious pre-professional ballet training program is available, by invitation only, to a limited number of student dancers, ages 12-17, from The United States and around the world. “It is a dream come true for a dancer who sets her goals at dancing professionally on the world’s finest stages,” exclaimed Mary Buttner, Director of International Dance Academy. “Since Paula walked through our doors, we immediately knew that she was special. We just knew we had someone so special and quite phenomenal. It is an honor of breathtaking proportions, and we are so proud!” Ten years ago, Paula’s parents never expected the “tutu” cute six-year-old to follow her dream and excel and achieve an honor of such magnitude. Like all great parents, they just wanted to give their daughter the very best opportunity to learn what she desired at that stage in her life. Fortunately, they found International Dance Academy and Paula found her second home. “The environment at IDA is amazing. It has been the best place for Paula to learn and train. She knew what she wanted at such a young age, and I watched her passion grow along with her love of the art here at the Academy,” explained Paula’s mother, Diana Zapata. The ambitious dancer was encouraged by her teacher, Deborah Buttner, Artistic Director of the International Dance Academy in Weston to audition for the ABT

Summer Program. She impressed the ABT talent scouts and teachers at the distinguished program so much that they invited her to join their program this fall at their impressive school in New York City. Paula has excelled in all aspects and gives 110% in every class. She also performs major roles on stage in IDA’s professional IBC productions such as Nutcracker, Little Red Riding Hood, and so many more. Additionally, throughout the years she has assisted Mary Buttner by demonstrating techniques to the younger pupils. The eager ballerina also attained the esteemed Advanced I Diploma in the Royal Academy of Dance examinations “We realized at that young age that Paula was going to shine, and she sure has!” said Deborah Buttner. “All these years she has shown her dedication, work ethic, and ability to focus and work extra work. Paula is a humble, kind, and beautiful young lady with a huge future ahead of her. She leaves for New York City with the love and best wishes of her teachers and friends at the International Dance Academy.”

to Support Victims of Hurricane IDA

s Hurricane Ida picked up speed and intensity it became clear that coastal communities along Lousiana’s gulf coast were again going to face the worst. Residents put up storm shutters, boarded up windows, and purchased supplies. They cautiously watched digital tracking maps and made plans for possible evacuations. We were reminded, yet again, how important a Hurricane Kit is for families living in the tropics. Fortunately for us, the storm stayed to the west. Our neighbors along the gulf coast and in the northeast, of course, were not as fortunate. Hurricane Ida will likely be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in US history. The storm came ashore as a category 4 storm with winds up to 150mph. The powerful storm dumped record rains all the way to New York City, with significant flooding all along its path. The South Florida community, local char-

itable organizations, and local businesses stepped into action immediately following the storm. In fact, even before the storm left the islands, South Floridians were organizing supplies, raising funds, and dreaming up logistics plans. Several large donation drives raised money and supplies for impacted communities. Initial estimates project the cost of the storm’s damage at $95 billion or more. Much of that in Northeastern states hit by torrential rains, putting the storm into a league with other deadly cyclones that have crippled the region in recent years, according to analysts. Moonlight Movies in the Park is Back at Regional Park

fter almost two years of COVID-19, movies are returning to the big screen! Family-friendly blockbuster movies will be exhibited on a huge outdoor screen at Weston Regional Park this fall. The City of Weston’s Moonlight Movies in the Park series will feature a number of hit movies. The popular program premieres October 9th with the Walt Disney feature, “Cruella”. In this adventure/comedy, Academy Award winner Emma Stone stars as Cruella. The live-action film explores the rebellious early days of one of cinema’s most notorious and notoriously fashionable - villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. "Cruella," which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. “Raya and the Last Dragon” will be shown on Saturday, November 6. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By State Representative Robin Bartleman

Dear Residents, As we head into the Fall, I want to share with you some updates from District 104 and what I am doing for you as we gear up for the 2022 legislative session. Students are back to school and as a former teacher, school board member, and as a parent, it is my favorite time of year! On August 18, I visited 7 schools throughout District 104 to meet with principals and celebrate the first day back. Thank you to Cypress Bay High School, Flanagan High School, Pembroke Pines Charter High School, Pembroke Pines Charter Central Campus K-8, Somerset Academy, Lakeside Elementary, Silver Trail Middle, and Hawks Bluff Elementary for hosting me this year. Before the start of the school year, we hosted a backpack drive for Mujeres Latinas to ensure that the 20 young girls participating in their mentorship program had new backpacks and supplies! Our office also worked with United Way Broward to donate backpacks and supplies to children of our veterans. Thank you to those who donated! This summer was unfortunately met with a spike in COVID-19 rates. Can Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury

-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis.

Injuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of thirteen and eighteen can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone.

Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Treatment options (early diagnosis is crucial): 1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals. 2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Non Weight Bearing would be mandatory.

3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment.

You owe it to yourselves to indulge in self-care without guilt in order to fulfill your basic needs and that of those you love. Plan alone time and dates with yourself getting pampered or simply going out for a walk in the park or the mall. Take yourself out to eat your favorite meal or treat yourself to a personal growth class or therapy session to learn new things about yourself. “Remember, when we take time for ourselves we aren’t taking time away from anyone else, we are making it possible to continue to pour into them.” Now is the time to make the change, to stop and re-evaluate yourself and refuel your tank. Moderation: The Best Approach to Cosmetic Surgery

oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From non-invasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long-term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community. The “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to

know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants, oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is

Looking for the Opening Straight Drive Down the

Middle of the Fairway? By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

t’s a great feeling to stride off the first tee knowing you have hit your ball straight down the middle of the fairway. It’s a huge boost to your confidence and any self-doubt you may have had immediately disappears. It’s a given that when you hit it straight from the very start you set up great momentum for the rest of your round. Realistically speaking it’s a fallacy to think you can hit dead straight golf shots all of the time. Here are some tips and drills to help you hit a straight shot. Try to avoid being too tense – Work on removing tension from your wrist and forearm muscles and learn instead to swing freely. A cluttered mind will always add tension and therefore start to improve by reducing the number of different swing thoughts in your head. It is far easier to release the club through impact without tension because a relaxed muscle is faster than a tense one. In addition, less tension makes it far easier to rotate your shoulders and hit the straight shot you are looking for.

Swing with a neutral grip – The key to hitting it straight comes from maintaining a neutral grip. Focus on some of the key check points including counting the number of knuckles you can see when you address the ball. Ideally you will see only two knuckles on your left hand; anymore and you are likely to hook the ball. Equally, check the number of knuckles visible

on your right hand. You should see no more than three; anymore and you are likely to slice the ball. In conclusion, the right hand controls the swing path and the left hand controls the angle of the clubface.

Set up correctly to the ball – Line up your feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the ball to target line at address. In lining up square to the ball to target line, make your life easier by picking a spot about six feet out in front of the ball to represent this imaginary line. Check that your left shoulder faces the target, perhaps the flag stick on a par 3. Check the direction of your divots – Check

your divots to determine whether you are hitting the ball with a square clubface. Your divots will clearly tell you the angle at which you struck the ball. If they are pointing directly at the target you need to go back to basics making sure your feet and shoulders are lined up properly.

Determine the correct ball position for each club – It varies for

each club and therefore it is critical you set up your ball position correctly at address. For pitching wedges and short clubs, the ball should be positioned in the middle of your stance. Always see your local PGA Professional for lessons as they are the ones to help you have more fun out on the course.

Skin Problems

wide variety of skin and coat conditions can cause your dog to itch and scratch, but pinpointing the problem can sometimes be difficult because many skin disorders cause similar outward signs. Following are four major categories of skin conditions seen in dogs.

Bacterial Skin Infections

The most common bacteria identified in bacterial skin diseases in dogs are Staphylococcus. Not contagious to people or other pets, these bacteria commonly cause a condition called “pyoderma” that results in itchy, yellow pustules; reddened skin; ulcerations; and/or hair loss. Bacterial skin infections are usually diagnosed based on the patient’s history as well as the location and appearance of the affected area. Your veterinarian may also perform blood tests and skin tests to determine the origin of the problem. Many bacterial skin infections have an underlying cause, such as parasite infestation, hormonal or immune system disorder, or allergy. If the underlying cause is not treated appropriately, the skin infection will likely return. Treatment involves an antibiotic shampoo followed by application of an antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics.

Fungal Skin Infections

The most common fungal skin infection in dogs is ringworm, which causes circular patches of hair loss usually on the head and legs. Diagnosis is best made via a fungal culture, where your veterinarian will pluck a few hairs from the edge of the circular patch and grow the fungi to see exactly what it is. Treatment for ringworm involves bathing the dog in a special fungicidal shampoo and administering antibiotics. Complete eradication of the infection can take a month or longer. Ringworm is quite contagious to both people and other pets. Therefore, children and other household pets should be kept away from an infected dog during the treatment period. Anyone coming into contact with the affected dog should wash their hands regularly.

Allergic Skin Diseases

Allergies develop when your pet’s immune system overreacts to certain substances, causing tissue irritation. Skin conditions caused by allergy are challenging to diagnose and difficult to treat. Bringing Home The Gold Local Hero Wins TWO Medals in Tokyo Olympics

embroke Pines resident Kendall Ellis won Bronze and Gold medals in Track and Field at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Ellis, 25, helped the United States win the first track and field medal of the Tokyo Olympics, competing for Team USA in both the inaugural 4x400 mixed relay, as well as the women’s 4x400 relay. “It was an honor to represent my country at the highest stage and get to compete in the Olympic Games,” said Ellis. “It’s an experience I’ll forever be proud of, and to come back home with two medals was a full-circle moment.” Kendall was born in Pembroke Pines, FL on March 8, 1996, to Wanda and Sam Ellis. She grew up volunteering at the West Pembroke Pines Track Club and excelled from a young age. She was a Pembroke Pines resident up until college, attending the Pembroke Pines Charter School through middle school. She graduated from Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 2014 before attending the University of Southern California in 2017 on an athletic scholarship. She later attended Devry Keller Graduate School, earning a Master’s degree in Business. Kendall specializes in the 400 meter dash - the longest of the sprints. The last portion of the race is typically dreaded by track athletes, but not Kendall. “That last hundred, that last fifty, is who can really dig down and who wants to feel the pain,” Ellis commented before the Olympics, “It's hurting, but who can tolerate it the most? And I think that's exciting for me. That's probably why my finish is so strong because I'm like, 'Yeah, this is the most challenging aspect for most people, so let me show everyone what I could do.” Kendall is a 14-time Division 1 All-American, 5-time PAC-12 conference champion, 4 time NCAA champion, collegiate and American record holder. She is also two-time World Champion and now a multi Olympic medalist. earn the Sounds of Fire Safety! is this year’s NFPA campaign to bring education and awareness for Fire Safety. Each year during Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 3-9, The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue encourage you and your family to know the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make. Sparky, NFPA’s mascot, reminds us, “When an alarm makes noises – a beeping or a chirping sound – you must take action.” Knowing what to do when you hear an alarm sound will help to keep you and your family safe. Forty-one percent of home fire deaths were the result of not having working smoke alarms. People need to know the importance of having working smoke alarms, knowing where to install them in the home, and how often they should be tested, maintained, and replaced. Smoke alarms are an essential safety tool for the early detection of fire in the home. Over half of home fire deaths occur when most people are asleep. A working smoke alarm will sound, waking you and your family, making them aware of the danger. Install a smoke alarm inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. There are smoke alarms and alert devices that alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These devices include strobe lights that flash to alert people when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers designed to work with your smoke alarm also can be purchased and installed Test your smoke alarm each month by pushing the test button on the smoke alarm to ensure they are in working order. If your smoke alarm has replaceable batteries, you should replace them every six months. Replace your smoke alarms batteries when you change your clock. Check the manufacturer date on your smoke alarm(s). If they were manufactured greater than ten years ago or you can not find a manufacture date, the NFPA recommends replacing them. When a smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out. If you have children, be sure they know the sound the smoke alarm makes. Creating a family fire safety plan can help prepare your family in the event of a fire. Be sure to include any special considerations for persons with special needs in your family safety plan. Identify two ways out of each room and designate a family meeting place, which should be someplace outside in the front of the home that everyone can get safely. Practicing a family fire drill will help ensure everyone knows what to do when they hear the sound of the smoke alarm. Practice using two ways out of each room and meet the family meeting place. Call 9-1-1 from a cellphone or neighbor’s phone once you are outside, and stay outside until the fire department tells you it is safe to go back into the home. Accidents happen. Fortunately, when it comes to fire safety, we can do a lot to be prepared and keep our families safe.
