Time for a Christmas Truce
D
ecember 24, 1914 was the date of one of the most improbable acts of collective goodwill and fellowship in history. German soldiers conspired with their British and French opponents to declare an informal ceasefire along the Western Front of World War One. After five months of the worst carrange in human history, rank and file soldiers declared what would later be called “The Christmas Truce.” The truce began when groups of soldiers sang Christmas Carols from their trenches. These carols were answered, in turn, by songs from the enemy. Soon, arrangements were made to recover bodies from the “no man’s land” between the opposing forces. This led to interactions between the forces, ending, believe it or not, with gift exchanges and even a soccer match. We often focus on the things that divide us in the modern world. Social media and political journalism highlight differences and frequently induce anger, jealousy, and rage. Next time you find yourself in a fit of anger or a divisive rant, think of the soldiers on the Western Front. Those poor souls, who’s life expectancies were measured in days, not years, found common ground with the very people who were trying to kill them. Maybe, this holiday season we can do the same. Happy Holidays!

Make Your Spirits Bright at Zona Blu this Holiday Season!
ona Blu first opened its doors and welcomed Weston diners to sample a taste of Sardinia over six years ago. Over that time the restaurant has become a fixture in West Broward’s culinary scene with its uncompromising quality and unique dishes. Even during the height of the pandemic, Zona Blu continued to delight discerning Weston diners with a taste of the beautiful Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy.
“Even in uncertain times, we were humbled by how many loyal customers continued to support us by ordering carry-out and delivery,” said co-owner Debbie Bautista, “This is what sustained us during the lockdown and allowed our staff to remain employed.”
Unique, Delicious Menu
Zona Blu’s menu features fresh pasta and seafood, wood-fired pizza, and imported ingredients found primarily in Sardinia. The restaurant’s cuisine is heavily influenced by Sardinia’s history. “Sardinian
food is influenced by flavors from the Middle East, North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Far East,” commented Chef Fadda, “Those influences resulted in one of the most deliciously unique cuisines in the world.” Zona Blu takes pride in offering dishes that are not typically known outside of Sardinia, such as Fregola, a unique, couscous-style pasta simmered in a double reduction of fish tomato broth, then tossed with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and the freshest seafood imaginable. Another favorite is Spaghetti al Cartoccio, which is spaghetti with mixed seafood, and fresh tomato sauce, covered with a thin pillow of pizza dough and baked in their wood-burning oven. The restaurant also continues to offer foodie-favorite options from past menus. These include Pasta alla Ruota where your favorite pasta and homemade Panna sauce are mixed tableside in a massive wheel of 100% Parmigiano Reggiano. The cheese is incorporated into the warm pasta and creates a dish and experience you will not soon forget. Another tableside favorite that is just as delicious as beautiful is the Orata al Forno (baked Sea Bream). This fish is packed with nutrients and is one of the traditional seafood dishes you will commonly find served on the island of Sardinia. After baking for 25 minutes covered in salt, the server will prepare the whole fish tableside by cracking the salt, delicately removing the skin, and deboning the fish. Delizioso! Culugiornes are homemade stuffed pasta typically served during special occasions in Sardinia. However, at Zona Blu, this dish has become so requested, that their chefs prepare them daily. No need to wait for a special occasion to enjoy them. Fresh pasta dough is filled with a mixture of potato, pecorino cheese, and mint before being shaped into plump dumplings pinched together to form a seal. The pasta is then briefly boiled and served with fresh tomato sauce and basil. This dish is enjoyed by everyone, including vegetarians!
20 / Our City Weston / December 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
Truffle Season
South Floridians typically think of the winter months as tourist season; at Zona Blu, it is truffle season. Fresh deliveries of black and white truffles arrive weekly and are offered as an entrée enhancement. Their most popular pasta is Cacio e Pepe con Tartufo. A small wheel of Pecorino Sardo cheese arrives to your table, fresh pasta is tossed until blended with the cheese, add black pepper, and finish the plate off with shaved black or white truffle. We guarantee you’ll be transported to food heaven! Zona Blu also offers full catering services for families and businesses. Families can even opt-in for a chef to come along with your catering order to prepare their famous Pasta alla Ruota. Local businesses receive 10% off catering orders. Be sure to take advantage of Zona Blu’s popular weekday specials. During lunch hours, 11:30 am - 3:00 pm, and all day on Tuesday, select pastas are $15 and select pizzas are $10 for dine-in, carry-out, and delivery. Zona Blu also offers a full bar with uniquely crafted cocktails. On Wednesday evenings, all wine bottles under $100 are half-price. With gratitude and thanks, Zona Blu would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and Buone Feste!

Wishing all our readers a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year from all of us at Our City Media.
LET'S CELEBRATE!
O
Weston's 25th Birthday Bash is December 11 By Jon Duka
n September 3, 1996, the residents of the Indian Trace Community Development District went to the polls and overwhelmingly voted to incorporate. The City of Weston was born. About six months later the Bonaventure community elected to join the new city. It has been 25 years since that fateful vote and The City of Weston has become one of the most envied cities in the country. Since then the population of Weston has more than doubled to over 70,000. Our schools are consistently rated as some of the best in the state of Florida, the community and arts programs are second to none and Weston is routinely recognized as one of the safest communities in the country. The Mayor and City Commission is calling on all Westonians to come out and celebrate Weston’s Silver anniversary at Weston Regional Park. The evening of fun and festivities will be a great time for the entire family.
The evening kicks off with an interactive Fun Zone from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm. It will include inflatable games, balloon twisters, airbrush artists, corn hole, and more. On-stage entertainment throughout the evening includes a DJ with live music and the Pure Energy Dancers. A concert, featuring The Afterparty
Band will cap the evening. Be sure to bring lawn chairs or blankets and make sure you bring a good appetite as there will be multiple food vendors on hand.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Your 2022 Resolutions
A
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
s 2021 thankfully comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions include walking 10,000+ steps each day, eating a cleaner diet or learning to meditate. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you can answer the following: Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed?
▸
I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the ▸ After debts, taxes, and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I created a way to reach important family and financial goals?
will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What ▸ Who can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me?
will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? ▸ Who What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care?
and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones ▸ When receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their
gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement? Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. Fortunately, there are many qualified attorneys in the area. Speak to several. Do your research. Ask questions. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! Please also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

BSO Offers Safety Tips to Keep Your Holiday Safe By Jon Duka
H
oliday shopping and Amazon deliveries are some of the best things to look forward to during this time of year. Unfortunately, they also offer theives an opportunity to steal. The Broward Sheriff’s Office has offered some simple safety tips to keep you and your possessions safe while you are shopping or traveling. Crime Prevention Specialist Deputy Danielle Quinones says when out shopping be aware of your surroundings. She recommends parking in well-lit areas at night. “Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash and multiple credit cards; only carry what is necessary.” “Always keep your vehicle locked and do not store shopping bags inside,” cautions Deputy Quinones. “Thieves are watching mall parking lots and shopping plazas for shoppers that place their purchased merchandise inside their vehicles before heading to their next location. If possible, bring your shopping bags with you or drop them off at home, before heading out again.” If your holiday shopping involves a purchase
from Craigslist, eBay, Letgo, or another online classified ad website, consider completing your transaction at a BSO or other law enforcement office. “Always be sure to ask questions before buying or selling an item. Trust your instincts!” warns Deputy Quinones. “And if you’re shopping online, only shop on secure sites. Pay with a credit card, not using your bank account; you’ll get better liability protection. Always check your statements for unauthorized transactions.” The holiday season is a time many residents travel. Deputy Quinones offers the following tips to secure your home before leaving for vacation: ▸ Maintain regular lawn maintenance while you are away. Don’t let your grass grow like a jungle! If burglars are staking out houses, they’ll notice these little things. ▸ Put a hold on your mail and newspapers or have a trusted friend, neighbor or family member stop by to collect these items. Having a full mailbox is a dead giveaway that you are not home. Don’t forget to
remind them to pick up packages and deliveries by the front door. ▸ If possible, leave a vehicle in the driveway. Have a neighbor park his/her vehicle there to give burglars the impression someone is home. ▸ Keep outdoor lights on during the evening/ overnight hours. Indoor lights can be set with timers. Lighting can give the impression that someone is home and possibly deter those ‘unwanted’ guests. ▸ Do not store garage remotes inside vehicles that are left behind while you are on vacation. ▸ Finally, take advantage of the free BSO Home Watch Program. A deputy will check your home for signs of break-ins or suspicious activity while you are out of town.

HCA Florida Opens
STATE-OF-THE-ART
HOSPITAL at NSU
T
By Terry Jaillet
here is a brand new hospital serving South Broward County. HCA Florida University Hospital officially began accepting patients on Monday, November 15. The state-of-the-art facility is located adjacent to the campus of Nova Southeastern University and represents one of HCA Healthcare’s largest investments in South Florida. The 300,000 square foot, the multi-specialty hospital is equipped with the latest technology and offers comprehensive healthcare services, including 24/7 emergency care, maternity services with a level III NICU, and a full range of robotic and minimally invasive surgical procedures. The facility replaces HCA’s Plantation General Hospital which is being closed. The emergency room at Plantation General, however, will remain open, serving residents north of 595. University Hospital was built with growth in mind. It will initially have 165 patient beds with the ability to expand to up to 600 beds. “We are excited to be able to drive healthcare with this impressive new facility,” said hospital President Madeline Nava, “Our approach is to individualize patient care. From the time a patient or family member arrives at our hospital, they will be greeted by a guest services coordinator who will help them find their way around. Exceptional patient experiences and worldclass care. That is our goal.” The proximity of the hospital to NSU’s two accredited medical schools is no accident. While neither HCA Florida nor NSU has publically released plans on working together, something is likely in the works. HCA Florida is the largest teaching hospital system in Florida, with more than 2,000 residents and fellows across 25 hospitals and the new hospital came complete with classrooms.
▸
HCA Florida University Hospital is located at 3476 S University Drive in Davie. They have a full-service 24-hour emergency room.

CHALK WALK IN THE PARK RECAP
O
n a clear, cool Sunday afternoon, November 7, 2021, another successful Chalk in the Park Event was hosted by the City of Weston and the Arts Council of Greater Weston. This year’s theme was “Create Your Happy”. There were 40 squares for sidewalk art, and about 200 friends and families gathered to watch the young artists and their families create their interpretations of the theme. Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston, commented, “It’s always wonderful to see smiling faces and the joy that art and culture brings. The best part of this event is seeing people of all ages showcase their creative talent and the comradery that is shared. We are excited to continue hosting this event and showcasing the talent that exists in our community. It Starts in Parks.” State Representative Robin Bartleman stopped by and had fun engaging with the artists and the crowd. She noted, “This is what Weston is all about: a family-friendly community. It is great to see our families back outside enjoying the weather and coloring our sidewalks with chalk. I look forward to the future events our wonderful city has to offer!” A special addition this year was West Palm Beach resident Ken Mullen, a chalk artist, street painter and muralist known for creating 3D images. He attracted many viewers – with cameras – as he created an alligator with an Arts Council and City of Weston box that was flat on the ground but was the perfect image for a 3D photo memory of the day. Judging the artwork were María Garcés Luzuriaga, a former Weston Art Guild (WAG) member, an artist and art teacher, JoAnn Heyer - WAG Director and artist, and Carolina García aka Apia – Visual Artists. The winners were: BEST OVERALL - $100 – “Happiness is…Team Green” by London Green, 11, Henry Green, 7, & Heather Green

We had a phenomenal turnout of families and friends who were ecstatic to be at the park creating their unique interpretations of the theme "Create Your Happy". ress up as a superhero, put on your running shoes, and hit the road! The 18th Annual KID Hero 5K is set for January 29th at Vista View Park in Davie. The familyfriendly run/walk will raise funds for Kids In Distress (KID) and is much more than your average road race. Participants are encouraged to release their inner superhero by dressing up in their best costume solo or as a team! The day will also include a “Smallville” Kids Fun Run and Fun Zone, Gotham tent, a Power-Up Breakfast and family-friendly entertainment. All funds raised from the race will benefit Kids in Distress. KID has been carrying out our mission to prevent child abuse, preserve the family, and treat children who have been abused and/or neglected for more than 42 years. They manage a five-acre multiple program campus in Fort Lauderdale and a four-acre campus in Southwest Ranches, that includes two family foster group homes. KID’s services include individual, family, and group therapy and counseling; preschool, aftercare and summer camp programs; recruitment, training, and support of foster/adoptive homes; and prevention, reunification, family preservation and maternal and child health services. The race starts at 7:30 am sharp! There are also virtual race options for everyone to participate, even if you can’t make it.

CAN DO KIDS
Bit By Bit, Local Girl Scouts
Are Making a Difference
P
By Beverly Perkins
lantation Girl Scouts from Troop 10707 were eager to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award. The coveted award is one of the highest awards a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. To achieve the prestigious title, the cadettes must make a change for the better. The opportunity to do so allows scouts to show their leadership skills and make a difference in the world. Girls must first identify an issue they care about, and then decide if they want to do it solo or with a team before submitting a proposal to their local Council for approval. The service project must be educational, as well as sustainable after the project is completed. In the end, they must reflect, share, and celebrate it. A minimum of 50 hours is also required to earn the award. It gives girls the chance to explore, reach out, and take action to make their community a better place. Amid the pandemic last summer, Ashley Weiss told her mom that she would like to work on her Silver Award by helping a horse-related charity. So, the ambitious teen began her quest online to locate the perfect one. But unfortunately, she was disappointed to find out she was too young to volunteer. This year, the troop reached out again to Bit-By-Bit Therapeutic Riding Center founder Susan March to see how else they could assist at the center. Together they discovered the many ways their service would be valuable to the 501(C)(3) PATH Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center and an American Hippotherapy Association Registered Facility. Ashley then recruited her fellow Troop 10707 scouts Milana Silva and Sarah McKenzie, and they decided their Silver Award project should benefit the therapeutic riding center. Bit-By-Bit specializes in speech, occupational, and physical therapies for people with physical, neurological, emotional, and cognitive delays and or disorders with the help of specially trained horses. They also offer an adaptive riding program called “Horses for Heroes” free of charge to United States veterans with disabilities. When asked why she was passionate about this project, Ashley said, “Since I have a love of horses myself, seeing disabled people benefit from hippotherapy is inspiring and encouraging.” The girls began by refurbishing a few of the clients’ favorite Sensory Paddock stations and then offered to design and build one of their own. The new Fidget Station in the Sensory Paddock was their colorful creation.
They enlisted local artist Libby Hodges to assist with her artistic touch. Additionally, they renovated and replanted a butterfly and an herb garden with the help of Horticulturalist Angie Carroll of Plantation and built and donated some much-needed storage space in the therapy classroom. Not only did the girls want to help BitBy-Bit physically, but they also wanted to bring awareness to alternative education and therapies like Hippotherapy on a social media platform. So, they started an Instagram campaign to show how important programs like the ones offered by Bit-By-Bit help people who require different ways of learning and how the Davie center provides a muchneeded service in the community. “I learned that if you try to do something, you can do it with a plan. We made plans for everything, and we got everything we planned done. Everything in the project took a few different ideas to make it work or took us building it and rebuilding it to make sure that we could make it as effective as possible. I also learned how I can make a bigger impact than I ever imagined as long as I try,” exclaimed Sarah. Although the scouting trio each put in over 50 hours to accomplish their goal and achieve their award, they are most proud of the impact they made in the community and the lessons they learned while creating their project. “The most successful aspect of this project was when we got to see people enjoying and learning through our new creations. We successfully spread awareness for positive education systems for people with disabilities,” added Milana.

BCPS School Choice Applications
Accepted Through February 1, 2022
S
chool-aged children living in Broward County are assigned to a school based on their home address and grade level. Parents can, however, apply for their child to attend a school other than the one their child is assigned school. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 1.
School Choice
By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students. Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by completing a School Choice Application during the application window. School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the

School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted.
How To Apply
There are three alternative options available for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 8. Parents will be notified if their child was selected on March 3, 2022. If selected, they must contact their child’s new school and enroll by March 11 or that seat will be vacated. If a child’s application was not awarded, parents can apply for another School Choice option or remain in that school’s applicant pool and register the child at his/her assigned school.

Joy to the Seniors
or over 35 years, Meals on Wheels South Florida has been serving more than 10,000 seniors and 5,000 children an estimated 1.5 million meals each year. As one of 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country. Meals on Wheels South Florida works diligently every day to protect the multitude of seniors from the threats of isolation and hunger. However, the nonprofit organization could not do it without the generous donors and volunteers who help in communities across America just like Broward County.
Wrapped boxes for homebound seniors in Broward County
By Beverly Perkins
“Meals on Wheels South Florida is powered every day by community partners, staff, and volunteers standing up to lend a caring hand to their aging neighbors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director for Meals on Wheels South Florida. “During the holidays we want our clients to remember that they are not alone and that we are here to provide them with a special holiday surprise.” This December, Meals on Wheels South Florida is hosting its 19th annual Holiday Gift Box Program, where they provide 150 of their home-bound seniors in Broward County with a special holiday surprise of personal care items. Each holiday season, the generous hunger-relief organization’s goal is to ensure their clients enjoy the holidays as much as possible. In addition to the nutritious meals and safety checks they already receive; Meals on Wheels South Florida staff and volunteers visit clients during the week of Christmas and present them with a giftwrapped box filled with personal care items.
• • • • • • • •
These boxes are delivered to clients who are generally alone and without family to visit them during the holidays. But much like everything else, it takes assistance from the local community to donate these personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, detergent, and more. “It means the world to me that Meals on Wheels South Florida surprises me during the holidays with this gift box. Living on a fixed income, generous gifts like this make all the difference,” exclaimed Teresa F., 79, of Plantation.
▸
Members of the community can get involved with the Holiday Gift Box Program by donating personal care items or making financial gifts to help purchase items. Items are being received at the Meals on Wheels headquarters located at 451 N. State Road 7 in Plantation Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. until December 15th. Those wishing to donate or volunteer for this program can call 954-731-8770 or email volunteer@mowsoflo.org for more information.

A
s we near the end of 2021, you have probably already started thinking of your 2022 New Year resolutions. Join a gym? Eat healthier? Safe extra money? While I hope all these things come true, why not add something a little more meaningful to the list this year, something that can help make every day a little less stressful. Parenting Resolutions are here to help you not do more this year, but to do better! Here are a few examples:
“Be a teacher”
Remember you are your child’s first teacher, and they are learning the most when we think they are not looking. Children are always watching, they are watching how we manage conflict, deal with stress, even how we apologize when we are wrong. This year, make a conscious effort to not only correct your child’s behaviors but also demonstrate these behaviors yourself.
“Yell less, breath more”
Children have big emotions and combatting their big emotions with our own may solve the problem for a moment but will only be putting a band-aid on the wound. When we yell at our children it not only shows them that yelling is okay, but it also does not teach them that having real emotions is okay. When a child is upset, begin by validating that emotion, “I see that you are angry, it’s okay to be angry, it’s not okay to hit.” Try to breathe with them, count to ten, and give them choices to focus on rather than the problem.
“Set Safe Boundaries/ Establish Routines”
Routines and holidays do not mix, so it is normal if the last month or two more problem behaviors have arisen. But it is not too late! Setting a schedule for your child and sticking to it can help with the overall stress in the household. If your child can anticipate what comes next, they are less likely to fight you on bedtimes, mealtimes, outside time, etc. For older children, I suggest creating these routines or boundaries together and placing them somewhere for all to see, holding everyone accountable!
“10 Minute Rule”
I know many of you are thinking, “10 minutes, I spend HOURS with my kids!” However, many parenting experts have found that spending ten intentional minutes with your children doing an activity they have chosen can help reduce negative behaviors, build emotional connections, also makes children more cooperative during the day. New Year’s resolutions don’t always need to feel so daunting, with a few slight changes and a little bit of mindful parenting, 2022 is going to be the best year yet!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE M By State Representative Robin Bartleman
iya’s Law
Miya Marcano was a 19-yearold college student from Pembroke Pines who was tragically killed at her apartment in September of this year. Police believe the killer was a maintenance worker employed by the apartment, who, despite having a criminal record, was able to attain a master key to gain access to the apartment. Following her tragic death, I filed HB 577 to ensure renters are provided with the protection all Floridians deserve. This legislation, named “Miya’s Law”, requires national background screenings including a criminal history record such as sexual predator and sexual offender registries. As the global events of 2020 affected us all, precautionary measures to protect the kids kept them inside. However, while they could not go outside to celebrate the holidays, Rotarians, alongside the local community, brought the festivities to them! The Rotary Club of Weston, its Satellite club members, and the local Weston community helped collect over 90 games for the kids of RGH. "It was an honor to be able to give the children of Reyna Group Home gifts, so they were entertained while staying inside for the holidays during the pandemic," said Jesus Sanchez, Rotary Club of Weston 2020-21 Past President. THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Birdie Pals, an Old-Fashioned Pen Pal
Club Connects Senior Citizens with High Schoolers By Jon Duka
F
eeling for her greater community, Cate Kapp, a high school senior at Western High started Birdie Pals in 2020, soon after COVID-19 hit. She quickly realized the impact of this shutdown after seeing how much it impacted her grandfather. Her grandfather was a social 85-year-old who immediately missed his family and friends and his social interaction with them. That inspired Cate to act, and she decided to create an old-fashioned pen-pal club for senior citizens. Birdie Pals seeks to connect Pen Pals to people. But not just any people. Some of the most important people, like those of wisdom and interest. The exchange began in the Spring of 2020 with the goal of connecting senior citizens during the pandemic. Our mission has grown ever since, and the Pen Pal Club is over 100 people strong. “Covid hit our communities in a way that has lasted way beyond the initial start of the pandemic. We found that senior citizens absolutely loved receiving letters. Many of the facilities that we work with are supportive and help us to match various interests, etc. They simply see the reward and the happiness it brings to their residents. Kapp is actively involved in her South Florida community and loves working to help others. In 10th grade she served as an intern for Congressman Ted Deutch (Florida’s 22nd District) and in 11th grade became a member of his Congressional Youth Cabinet. She also participated in Youth Leadership Broward in 11th grade. For more information on BirdiePals or to sign up, please visit www.birdiepals.com.

HEEL AND ARCH PAIN IN ADULTS By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
P
lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk.Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief.Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night Splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort. Physical Therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, Shockwave therapy (EPAT), Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Stem Cell injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition.

The Mental Game of Golf By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
G
olf is a sport where players can get consumed by emotions, distractions and negative thoughts. These factors can make a golfer feel “out of control” resulting in two reactions: giving up (going through the motions to just finish the round) or forced play (trying harder by adjusting mechanics or over-analyzing their play). The most optimal mindset for peak performance requires that you avoid engaging in over-thinking and over-analyzing while playing. In the heat of the moment, pressure and mistakes can seem overwhelming but if you can commit to adopting the right mindset and spend the time to train your mind, your golf game will soar. Always remember, your emotional reaction, your thoughts and your focus are 100% within your control – you just need to learn how to do it. Here are four tips on how to adopt the right mindset.
your pre-shot routine, trust and swing. Anything more than that is useless noise.
TIP #3: Thought Control
You will have thousands of positive, negative and neutral thoughts throughout a round of golf. You may not be able to control which thoughts come into your mind, but you can control what thoughts you grab on to and buy in to. I like this analogy. Imagine your mind is like a fish tank. Different fish swim into your awareness like thoughts. It is up to you to decide which ones you want to focus on. The cute small blue and yellow spotted one or the ugly grey and black fish. Tell yourself that just because a thought comes through your mind, it is your choice whether you stay with this thought or not. Let go of self-defeating thoughts and choose self-enhancing thoughts. Try to do this in your next practice round.
TIP #4: Anxiety Management
Begin to recognize your troublesome thoughts that lead to worrying before and during your performances. Train yourself in relaxation techniques (ie: deep breathing, imagery) to reduce your stress levels. It is important for you to equip yourself with diverse strategies to regain the TIP #1: Competitive Routine calm, clear mind and automatic execution Your pre-shot routine is the key to calm required for peak performance, especially your mind and body. Buying a puppy from a pet store also limits your knowledge of the puppy’s initial living conditions, and you cannot see the puppy’s parents to ensure they are in good health and well socialized.

You can also visit dog shows to see many different breeds at once and talk with dog breeders and trainers. Consider the size of the adult dog and how it would fit into your household. Would you prefer a lap dog or do you have room for a large dog? Research the exercise and grooming requirements of different breeds. Some breeds, such as herding dogs, require more exercise and may be best suited for someone who is looking for a jogging partner. Other breeds need regular grooming, so you will need to plan for those expenses. Some breeds may be predisposed to certain health conditions. In some cases, you may ask the breeder to test for the condition, if possible, or provide a written guarantee should the condition occur. Mixed-breed dogs may be less likely to have certain health conditions than purebred dogs.

Where Should I Look for a Puppy?
If you prefer a purebred dog, ask veterinarians and breed clubs for advice on how to locate a reputable breeder. You’ll want to interview several breeders and ask to see the puppy’s parents and the breeding facility, if possible. It is important to visit the facility to ensure that a limited number of puppies are raised in a sanitary, well-socialized environment. Driver safety
he Broward Sheriff Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services men and women would like to wish you and your families a very happy and healthy holiday season. The holiday season typically starts in late November and runs through mid-January, filled with moments and memories that last a lifetime. As people attend parties, gather with family and friends, and travel increases, road safety considerations are particularly important during this time of year. It's essential to take note of important safety considerations to help ensure your family stays safe throughout the holiday season. According to the National Safety Council, in 2020, vehicle travel accounted for the highest fatality rates of all transportation types. An estimated 485 on Thanksgiving Day, 115 on Christmas Day, and 163 people died on New Year's Day. Studies show that three significant influences contributed to these accidents. Alcohol or drug impairment was involved in approximately one-third of all fatalities during the holiday. As always, drivers should never operate a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Distracted driving, claiming another one-third of these victims. Avoid cell phone use while driving. If you must use a cell phone, utilize hands-free options to help stay focused on the road. Navigate directions before traveling or ask a passenger to assist. Distracted driving doesn't only mean cellphone use. Distracted driving can also be music too loud or horseplay while driving. Drivers can help ensure theirs and the safety of others by always remembering to drive distraction-free. Speed is a significant factor in most of the accidents that claimed the lives of a loved one or a friend this last holiday season. It is easy in today's cars that are sound resistant and smooth driving not to realize the excessive rates of speed we at times achieve. Avoid holiday traffic by planning and leaving early. Every driver and passenger should buckle up every ride, every time. Follow posted speed limits and any signage indicting road hazards. Check that your vehicle is running well and tires are in good condition for travel. Drivers should get plenty of rest to avoid drowsy driving. To best enjoy this holiday season, please pay close attention to your speed, distractions, and influences that cause your reactions not to be their best. As you make your holiday plans, be sure to consider safety protocols to minimize the exposure and spread of Covid-19. Always be prepared with an emergency kit, including a spare tire, jumper cables, a first aid kit, a flashlight, and other emergency essentials. Avoid large gatherings whenever possible and always be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating. To help keep your family safe, follow all safety precautions and recommendations from the CDC and local officials. 74 / Our City Weston / December 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

ASK THE EXPERT
A RARE DISEASE? MAYBE NOT
T
he key to survival of any species depends on the number of battles that the specie wins against environmental factors such as climate changes, presence of predators, food deprivation, and infectious agents including parasites, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Humankind has been successful in fighting and winning all of these battles, and now we are the dominant specie on earth. We have significant advances in the treatment of infectious diseases, nutritional deficits, metabolic conditions as well as a slow but continuous improvement in the understanding and management of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. However, there is a silent and lethal enemy with an increasing frequency in diagnosing, able to attack every organ or system of the body, known as autoimmunity. This enemy is particularly important because it uses inflammation; a response designed by human evolution to fight against infectious agents and combat defective body cells. When the Immune System loses its harmonic synchrony and is not able to recognize some cells and other substances of the body as a part of its own organism, it generates an immune response. This reaction includes cell infiltration that promotes inflammation and produces cellular death through specialized killer cells (cellular immunity) and the production of antibodies (humoral immunity). One of the most frequent autoimmune diseases is Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Its name derives from. The Japanese physician Hakaru Hashimoto (18881-1934) who reported it at the beginning of the previous century. The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck. It produces a thyroid hormone that controls how the body uses energy. Hashimoto Thyroiditis is also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune disorder that destroys thyroid cells through a cellular and antibody-mediated immune process producing fibrosis impairing the thyroid gland’s ability to produce thyroid hormone. Hashimoto Thyroiditis appears to develop as a result of a complex interaction between predisposing genes (70%) and environmental triggers (30%) like ionic radiation, or some viruses like Hepatitis C.
By Carlos Barbosa, MD
However, the fine details of this interaction are still poorly understood. The incidence is estimated as 0.8 x 1000/year in males and 3.5 x 1000/year in females, affecting approximately 2% of Americans. As with all autoimmune diseases females are 4 to 10 times more frequently affected. The disease tends to run in families, occurring more commonly among middle-aged women, but can be seen at any age, regardless of age and sex. The presence of other autoimmune diseases, like Rheumatoid arthritis, Diabetes type 1, Celiac disease, pernicious anemia, and Addison Disease may increase the risk of getting Hashimoto Thyroiditis. The symptoms are insidious and variable, may affect almost any organ in the body. Many patients with Hashimoto Thyroiditis have no symptoms at onset, but as the disease progresses the patient may manifest symptoms of Hypothyroidism like: Fatigue, exertional dyspnea, exercise intolerance, trouble tolerating cold, weight gain, joint and muscle pain, increased muscle fatigue and weakness, constipation, Depression, Ataxia, slow speech and cognition, absence of tendinous reflexes, dry skin, thinning of hair, alopecia, heavy or irregular periods, slow heart rate, and increase in blood pressure. In some patients, the presentation may have bouts of hyperthyroidism with enlargement of the gland known as Goiter, but then progressively develop signs and symptoms of Hypothyroidism. The diagnosis is often challenging and may take time until later in the disease process. It is based on a complete medical examination and clinical history, as well as blood work including levels of TSH, T3, T4, and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies. Thyroid Peroxidase is an enzyme that plays a role in the production of thyroid hormones. No correlation has been found between antibodies levels and disease severity. Other antibodies that may be tested include antithyroglobulin and Anti TSH Receptor blocking antibodies. The imaging of an ultrasound will assess thyroid size, echo texture and whether thyroid nodules are present, but usually do not contribute to the diagnosis. The treatment of Hashimoto thyroiditis depends on whether the thyroid is damaged enough to cause hypothyroidism. Patients with elevated TPO antibodies but normal TSH and thyroid hormone levels do not require treatment.

Synthetic Levothyroxine taken orally at an appropriate dose (1.6 to 1.8 mgr./kg./day) is remarkably effective in restoring normal thyroid hormone levels and reversing the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Most patients require lifelong treatment. Finding the appropriate dose may require testing with TSH every 6 to 8 weeks after any dose adjustment. After a working dose is reached an annual TSH test will be required. When levothyroxine is taken in the appropriate dose, it has no side effects, however, when an insufficient dose is taken, serum TSH will remain elevated and patients may have persistent symptoms of hypothyroidism. If the dose is excessive, serum TSH will become suppressed and patients may develop symptoms of hyperthyroidism or have serious side effects, like a form of tachycardia called atrial fibrillation, patients may also develop tremors, osteoporosis and mental changes such as anxiety and mania. Some foods and supplements can affect how levothyroxine is absorbed, for example, grapefruit juice, soy, espresso coffee, and multivitamins that contain calcium and iron, therefore it is recommended to take the medicine on an empty stomach to prevent abnormal absorption. Untreated hypothyroidism can lead to several health problems including high cholesterol, heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, and myxedema, a rare condition in which body functions slow down to the point that the life of a patient may be threatened. Hashimoto thyroiditis is a lifelong disorder with no cure, thus it is best managed by an interdisciplinary team, that includes the primary physician, the endocrinologist as well as other specialists. At one source pediatrics, we have a strong alliance with several pediatric specialist's groups, that help us diagnose and treat our patients. Doctors at One Source Pediatrics share the commitment to understand and treat pediatric conditions at the earliest possible stage to prevent irreparable tissue or organs damage and prevent secondary complications.

Considering Removing Your Breast Implants? By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

espite the evidence that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological well-being, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated”. To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy)
and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a so-called augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue, those symptoms were reduced once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be indi-
