“As we celebrate our fifth year anniversary with you, we wanted to capture a cover that truly brought together everything we have shared with you over the past five years. In 2010, I was at a young age with limited experience when my mother and her long-time friend Stacey came to me and asked “do you think you can design a magazine?” For some reason I said “yes” and I am sure glad that I did. Now, it was a bit - actually a lot harder than what I thought it was going to be, but with some long days and some even longer nights of hard work, we published our premiere issue in the autumn of 2010. I took my training further and attended two universities to study the field of communication. Ever since then we have worked to perfect our publication to be equally informative and pleasing to the eye; it is truly amazing how far we have come in these five years and are looking forward to even more years to come.” -- Sonya Stell Working with some of our amazing local businesses to achieve this overall look, we invited Allison Clark of Allison Clark Photography to photograph this cover. As a participant of past issues and a photographer we had used for family portraits, we had a fantastic time working with Allison and her adorable Pomeranian, who was by far the cutest dog we had ever seen. Before we could actually take the final shot, we collected every single issue that we had (yes, we do keep them all) so that we could showcase all of our past editions. We then took a day to go shopping at The Way We Were in downtown Georgetown to find the perfect little black, white and pink party dress, matching necklaces and stunning black stilettos. On the day of the photo-shoot, Sonya’s hair was done by Jessica at Trendz Hair Studio in downtown Georgetown - it looked great!

The unique white swivel chair was something that we had been admiring from Georgetown Living Lighting for quite some time, it fit perfectly into the shot and was just the right style. The final touch - aside from the cute little dog - was a collection of yummy pink and white cupcakes, designed and made for us by Edible Delights in Georgetown. They were perfect - and yes, we ate all of them afterwards! Delicious! This cover is definitely the most meaningful and significant cover we have ever had, and by far the most fun we have ever had shooting one! So get ready to celebrate with us as you flip through these pages and see everything that is in our space. Perhaps look through your piles of old magazines and see if you can find some of our past issues. We would like to thank all of the business owners who assisted us in creating this vision and we hope that you enjoy our fifth anniversary edition of In Our Space magazine.

with a designers touch written by nancy stell photographed by sonya stell

With approximately 3000 square feet of gorgeous living space, take a look at what designer Dianne Acheson, owner of Acheson’s Gifts and Decorative Accents in Orangeville has done with her own home. And of course many of these beautiful pieces came from her shop! The richness of colour is what instantly catches your eye as you enter the front door of this centre hallway design with the foyer set up to welcome you. The circular staircase is the focal point with today’s trending painted out spindles and risers, while dark hardwood steps pop. Beautifully done and accented with amazing furniture pieces and elegant works of art. 8

Reversed for functionality, Dianne utilizes the living room as a large formal dining room where she often entertains guests at the large oval table that comfortably seats eight. Tufted linen high back chairs with studded detail are very popular this fall and work well in this large room. Inspired by Oprah, the dining room, transformed into a sitting room, is furnished with four large armchairs where you can sit back and enjoy great company, a good book or just gaze into the beautiful yard through the large picture windows.

The custom kitchen boasts granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a sizable breakfast nook surrounded by large picture windows. A unique find, the kitchen chairs look like old wicker, but are actually made out of paper. The incredible great room integrates texture and design with a faux animal print skin rug under two coffee tables topped with stone that came from a wall between one of the provinces in China. The floor to ceiling fireplace, the focal point of the room is eloquently decorated with boxwood topiaries framing a simple mirror that free stands behind an ornate sculpture; an eclectic arrangement of contemporary décor. Move into the glass solarium with another great view of the picturesque yard from the re-purposed side chairs. 10

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

Upstairs the main washroom has a unique tile floor inspired from Dianne’s visit to Florence, Italy and creates an illusion of being angled when it’s not. The walk-in shower is designed to sit directly on the tile and requires the floor to be slanted just enough for proper drainage yet inconspicuous when standing on it. The oval freestanding contemporary tub is the focal point with a beautiful floor to ceiling armoire from the late 1800’s, housing the toiletries, towels and a few decorative pieces adding just a pop of colour. Dark charcoal grey walls pull together this striking design with a hint of animal print pattern in the side chair, a splash of green from the luscious fern and a unique mirror on mirror design over the granite countertop with drop sinks; an oasis to escape to after a stimulating day. This beautiful home is available for sale through Jim Wallace of Sutton-Headwaters Realty Inc. For more information visit his webstie at: www.suttonheadwaters.com

bon appetit written by nancy stell

Often referred to as the hub of the home, your kitchen renovation is likely to be one of the most important renovations you will do. It not only functions as the main room in your home, but it also adds the most value to your home when you are selling it… if it’s done right! And it’s not all about style, yet that plays a major role, you want to be sure the flow of your kitchen, functionality and workspace all adds up to the best use of the space. Referred to as the work triangle, there are some key points you need to consider when designing your new kitchen. To create a unique space first choose the focal point of your kitchen, perhaps a large window or long wall so you can take advantage of this when determining your design. Try to keep the straight-line distance between the sink, fridge and stove between 12 and 23 feet and position the sink between the fridge and stove as it is used most often. Existing plumbing predetermines the sink location so use it as a starting point. The amount of counter space on either side of the stove and sink is another important consideration. Ideally 36 inches to the right of the stove and 30 inches to the left are best; however, if space is at a premium, a minimum of 24 inches and 18 inches is required for functionality. It’s also recommended not to place a fridge and built-in wall oven next to each other as each appliance functions best with space on the side for safety. To incorporate enough cabinetry, opt for 10 linear feet of both upper and lower cabinets. Incorporate Lazy Susan’s into the corners to maximize space and pull out drawers for easy access.

12

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

Islands are a great way to add extra counter space, perhaps a second sink, dishwasher or oven and when you incorporate in floor plumbing and wiring the possibilities are endless. One of the most dramatic designs is the two-tiered design allowing for a prep area on the kitchen side and counter seating on the other side. Be sure you have about an 18-inch overhang to have room for your knees. Studies have shown that the most efficient kitchens are where the three points of the work triangle add up to at least 12 feet but no more than 23 feet. So no matter what the perimeter shape of your room is, most kitchens are organized around one of these basic kitchen layouts incorporating the work triangle into it. A u-shaped kitchen puts the stove, fridge and sinks each on a different wall offering a very compact triangle and works best with the sink in the middle of the U. An L-shaped kitchen uses two walls often with the fridge at one end of the long leg of the L. Lastly the G-shaped kitchen has one appliance on each of two walls and the third appliance on a peninsula that separates the work area from a breakfast area or family room. A well-designed kitchen will last for many years and is worth the investment. Don’t scrimp on the foundation as you can always upgrade counters and appliances down the road but a poorly functioning kitchen can be a costly mistake. There are many experts in our region who offer great design services and can help prevent you from making the wrong decisions. Consider the many benefits of hiring a design expert today and have your dream kitchen come true.

welcome into my space written by sonya stell photographed by sonya stell

scan to take a video tour Recently, I moved back into this amazing region and purchased a home that was a tad bit out of date. The structure and integrity of the home was great, but with some early 1990s décor and some bad paint choices, it was less than beautiful. When I have had projects like this in the past, I love to visit our local experts who have supported In Our Space magazine for many years – so I did just that! There were three rooms in particular that needed some heavy duty TLC: the kitchen, the family room and the master bedroom ensuite. Caledon Tile was the first place I stopped in, choosing new countertops, new sinks and faucets, a new backsplash, tiling and a walk-in shower design. After that, I went to Caledon Fireplace to pick out my brand-new modern gas fireplace. Now, came the hard part. With some greatly appreciated assistance from my mother, father and boyfriend we had the countertops off, appliances out, sinks thrown away, bathtub removed and the gas fireplace discarded in only a few days. I think my mother and I had the most fun smashing the faux brick backing around the fireplace – hammers in hand, we had a blast! Then everyone else got to work. I choose a stunning black galaxy countertop with sparkling gold flecks for the kitchen with a dropped squared doublesink and matching faucet. As well as, a creamy stone backsplash to compliment the existing cabinetry. This room truly came together when I covered a terrible green-grey paint with a light cappuccino and a chocolate brown accent wall, and brought in Whirlpool stainless steel appliances. Caledon Tile did an amazing job on my master bedroom ensuite, converting the standard sized tub into a large walk-in glass shower. I choose dark grey 14

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

tiles for both the floor and the inner walls of the shower, traveling in a vertical pattern – something different than your commonly seen horizontal pattern. The most striking aspect of the tiling was the addition of silver stainless steel and glass tiles going up the centre of the shower. A stunning square rain-head adds to this modern look and the subtle water flow is very relaxing. The white quartz countertop adds lightness to the room, pairing nicely with the existing grey vanity and new white oval sink with an open faucet. I then painted the room a light grey on three of the walls and a dark charcoal grey (nearly black) on the last wall, contrasting nicely with the dark shower. I was amazed at all of the choices of gas fireplaces you have nowadays, keeping true to my modern style I choose a square fireplace with black crystal and volcanic rock inside, and with a stainless steel outer plate by Regency from Caledon Fireplace. Paul did an excellent job with the installation and now it was ready to be tiled. I choose a unique grey tile that has different widths, heights and depths to every piece, creating a striking pattern and fitting around a white mantel perfectly. These too, were from Caledon Tile. To finish off the room, I painted two walls a light turquoise and the back wall black with high-gloss black stripes. Hung over this accent wall is an oversized silver clock I purchased from Emerald Isle in Georgetown a few years ago. Furnishing the rest of the space came together nicely, with a grey sectional, circular glass coffee and side table, a high-gloss black TV stand and a beautiful grey patterned carpet from The Carpet Palace in Norval. The final touch was adding some mirrored artwork and four wrapped canvases found at Home Sense. Now that the renovation is complete, I enjoy the space everyday and am so pleased with the results. Great work everyone!

make your home, your home written by sonya stell photographs sonya stell

In Our Space visited Timeless Treasures in Georgetown to learn what’s trending this fall in home decor. Owner/Designer Tanya Glavina shared her knowledge and inspiration behind these beautiful pieces she has brought in this season. This autumn nearly every colour is in style, from bright oranges to deep rich reds, if it’s colourful — it’s hot! So how do you decide how to furnish and decorate your home when everything is on trend? The key to any great style is choosing what you like first, then adding in some trendy pieces as “accents” that can be easily changed once the style goes out of date. Tanya advises to first pick your palette. If you prefer a warmer, homier feel go with brown wooden furniture that is rich and timeless. This classic look will never go out of style and mixes well with bright oranges, reds and golds. However, if you enjoy a cooler, more modern look; choose shades of greys, blacks and whites. An excellent backdrop to silvers, glass pieces and nearly every colour. If you are looking to upgrade some pieces within your home, but still like that traditional look, Tanya has brought in the perfect piece for you! A creamy couch that uses classic fabric, a large buttoned back, but narrowed modern arms and squared legs; becoming the perfect modern-traditional 18

mix. Studded furniture is also back with a bang! Being found on the backs or fronts of chairs, couches, ottomans and more; adding that extra little pop to your room. After you have chosen your colour scheme and your large furniture pieces, it’s time to pick out some throws, pillows, centrepieces and everything that makes a house — a home. Choose your favourite colours or what is hot this season or what screams fall, as these pieces are inexpensive and easily interchangeable. Gold and silver mercury glass is huge right now, creating elegant candle displays, vases and decorative pieces for the table. Mix in some crystal pieces to give a sparkling “wow” factor to your room and watch it come to life in the light. Make Timeless Treasures Decorating Centre your ONE STOP SHOP!! Together they will make your vision come to life, supplying all your furniture, decorating and gift giving needs. ...and mark your calendars for Timeless Treasures’ annual gala on November 14th all day long! Take advantage of some ‘how to demonstrations’, refreshments, prizes and so much more! The launch to our holiday season, Timeless Treasures will be all decked out in full Christmas Joy!

Electronic Pet Doors While the Doorman™ Pet Door opens your home to happiness this state of the art electronic programmable door lets you determine when you want your pets to use the door and with its lock and unlock feature activated by your pet’s collar it will protect your home without letting unwanted animals in. With six pets in our house, I was constantly opening and shutting doors to let each in and out throughout the day. Now they come and go as they please and one of the most wonderful advantages to having a pet door in use is the reduction in the number of pesky insects that used to fly in and out every time I opened the door. Insects don’t seem to fly at ground zero so none use the pet door. The quality of the Doorman™ ensures that it will function well for years no matter how rough the winter is with cold and snow. It also means that I don’t have to go out in frigid weather when they need to go out and blasts of cold air in the house are reduced when they use their door. The really nice thing about the Doorman is that it is one of the least expensive electronic pet doors I have ever seen. With the $100.00 off coupon in the advertisement here it is definitely good value for everyone and you will have happy pets. If you already have the Invisible Fence® Brand of pet containment then your pet’s receiver collar can be programmed to work with the Doorman™ and if you don’t have any pet containment then we have a new Shields™ receiver that will operate the Doorman™ which will provide sweet relief to you and your pet.

it’s that time of the year... halloween written by nancy stell

Organizing the perfect Halloween party takes some serious planning! After all you want to create the perfect spooky environment that captures the spirit of the holiday and makes your guests feel like they have entered into another world. Pick your date and time, create your guest list and get decorating! What better way to welcome your guests than with an outdoor display of eerie and frightening decorations that “scream” Halloween? Glowing lanterns lining your walkway with garden stakes especially designed for the occasion all leading up to your front entrance where a hand carved pumpkin and front door Halloween wreath invites them in. For the inside of your home, consider using pumpkins for centrepieces, painting them and carving them into your own unique display; the possibilities are endless! Cover your furniture with white cloths to create the look of an old abandoned home and have the added benefit of protecting your furniture from spills and other accidents that might occur. Candles really create the mood and todays battery operated candles create the ambiance without the risk off toppling over. Add extra details by dripping red wax on the candle holders alluding they are bloody. Replace your family portraits with creepy portraits from earlier centuries and put on some spooky music to help set the mood.

20

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

Now for dinner... Want to keep it simple? Use everyday foods, putting them together to create a spooky masterpiece. BBQ burgers with custom faces cutout on slices of cheese that you melt on top. French bread cut and filled on top can create the illusion of a snake with olives added for eyes and a slice of red pepper cut into the shape of a tongue. Make a veggie platter using carrots to create a pumpkin shape. Cut zucchini into half moons and use them to make the mouth and square dishes holding your favorite dip for the eyes and nose. For dessert, use marshmallows to create yummy ghosts with chocolate chips for eyes, and a chocolate wafer cookie with a kiss on top to make a hat. A pumpkin “tossing it’s cookies” is always fun. Remove the seeds and roast them first then spill them from the carved mouth. There are unlimited options, so think outside the box, and have fun creating something to amaze your guests. There are a lot of great drink recipes you can find these days like this Black Devil Martini. Mix 2 ozs of dark rum with ½ oz dry vermouth. Take orange food colouring to dye some coarse sugar. Run a lemon wedge around the top of your glass and then dip into the dyed sugar. Use a couple of black olives for a garnish. With your menu in order, your decorations arranged, now you just need to send out some spooky invitations so your guests know when and where to show up. Encourage dressing up by offering prizes for the best dressed and enjoy the evening!

a healthier wine choice written by nancy stell

There are many health benefits to drinking wine with studies showing a reduced risk of heart attacks, lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes and lower risks of colon cancer, just to name a few. But many wine enthusiasts are finding it much harder to tolerate local retail wines.

add... some people choose to not add any. Your wine can easily still last two to three years and some even up to five! The trick is to cellar them properly, storing them in the dark, with a constant room temperature and leaving them undisturbed.

The Naked Vine, located in the heart of Bolton offers a wine making experience with wines sourced from vineyards around the world, partnering with brand names you typically see in your local wine retailer BUT with 75% fewer sulfates. Not only will you feel the difference in your wallet but in your virtually allergen free wine too. This healthier alternative allows you to enjoy a glass or two worry free. In a recent blind taste test, a Naked Vine bottle of Amarone, aged for two years, compared favourably with an $80.00 LCBO selection.

If you are still not convinced, consider complimenting your existing cellared wine with a carefully chosen Naked Vine selection you have the pride of knowing you made yourself. No experience necessary! Just a half hour of your time and a willingness to have fun is all you need.

The preservatives in store bought wines are what cause most people to get stuffed up; experience headaches and redness in the face. When making your own wine, you choose how much preservative you want to

22

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

Something for the person that has everything, The Naked Vine is a boutique style winemaking shop. Once your wine is brewing, choose from a selection of custom etched bottles and enjoy specialty sauces and rubs, fantastic chocolate and olive oils imported from Spain to put together the perfect gift or simply to pamper yourself. Lots of unique and fun gift items including stemwear, wall art and so much more! So come on in! Spend a little time at The Naked Vine and make yourself a great tasting wine!

enjoying wines this autumn

written by nancy and sonya stell

As our summer days slowly fade away from us and our favourite drinks now are just too cold or too sweet for the winter time, there are a few excellent transitional wine styles that will take you from “summer wines” into “winter wines”. The best representation of the season is definitely red wine. White wines and rose wines are typically a preferred summer drink, while reds are often better enjoyed in the colder weather. A few highly recommended red wines are: Syrah and Grenache based wines, as well as Pinot Noir and Beaujolais which give off that autumn feel. These reds are light to medium bodied and have a range of spicy flavours that will pair well with autumn fare. If you still prefer white to red, no matter what the season; try Viognier, Roussanne or Chardonnay this autumn and winter. But of course, the most versatile all-year round wine of all is champagne and other sparkling wines, which will always be enjoyed.

The perfect red wine sauce: Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter, 1 finely chopped white onion 1 crushed garlic clove 1/2 cup dry red wine 1 cup beef stock Method Melt the butter in the heavy frying pan over medium heat. Saute the onion for 3 to 4 minutes or until soft. Then add the garlic and continue cooking for another minute. Add the red wine and bring to a boil, then reduce to medium-low and simmer for about 5 minutes. Add the beef stock, bring it back to a boil and then reduce it again to medium-low heat for about 10 minutes or until thickened. Season with fresh ground pepper and serve over your favourite beef steaks!

keep busy after school

24

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

after school Families across the country are beginning to recognize the tremendous benefits a quality after school program can provide. Because they offer an array of activities not always available during the traditional school day, these programs give students many opportunities for growth and learning they might not find elsewhere. For example, at a time when many schools have had to cut or reduce spending on art and music programs, after school programs can offer kids the opportunity to paint, draw, perform in a dramatic production, play music, participate in a dance performance, visit museums, etc. Or students can go into further depth with research that they may have begun in class time, which is often limited. While most in the after school field would agree that supporting academic skills is an important goal for after school programs, they stress the importance of integrating academic supports into a larger program that also promotes the social, emotional, and physical development of the children they serve. Children and youth who attend after school programs do better in school, and are safer and less likely to get into trouble in the hours after the end of the school day. As well, children who participate in after school programs behave better in school, have more developed social skills, and show more self-confidence as a result of the caring relationships they develop with staff and other students in the program.

ooh la la...

Say hello to this years hottest styles, creating the perfect ooh la la outfit for this fall season! From head to toe, we have you covered. Starting off with this years throwback trend: floral print, on a beautiful semi-sheer flowing top that is appropriate for the workplace and a night out. Moving down, we have leather jeggings. Hot! Hot! written by sonya stell Hot! The leather pant trend has stood the test of time for a few seasons now and continues to just keep getting better; this high waisted look is flattering and stylish. And now it’s all about the accessories! A large black leather bag is not only timeless and practical, but looks great with nearly everything! This one by Michael Kors is all the rage right now, with two small handles for everyday carrying or one large strap for an easy over-the-shoulder convenience. And the shoes... oh the shoes... these suede purple pumps are absolute show-stoppers, with golden sky-high heels and a punch of colour, these will definitely get you noticed. Now for something really fun! Match those shoes with a dark mauve lipstick by Channel, this colour is in right now and if you can rock it, you should wear it. Maybe just tone down the eyeshadow when you are choosing a lip colour this bold. Finish off this statement with big golden earrings, go for something that has a costume-jewellery look but make sure that it is still elegant and classy. Now that you are ready to hit the streets, throw on your favourite pair of big-lensed round shades and maybe grab a simple jacket for those chillier days! Have fun ladies!

no make-up make-up written by sonya stell

This season’s trend in make-up… no makeup. Whatsoever. It was only a matter of time before somebody took the whole “no make-up make-up” trend and simplified it by sending the models out onto the runway with totally bare faces. Following a week of glowing skin, barely-there foundation and plenty of lip balm, Marc Jacobs and Francois Nars did just that at the designer’s recent fashion show. Probably the only show in New York where designers chose not to apply any make-up, what must have been the easiest job of his career so far. Absolutely no make-up whatsoever. Not one gram of make-up. Only moisturizing lotion and that is it. Models were finding themselves with very little to do backstage, with only skincare applied to their faces and wigs eliminated the need for hours spent having their hair styled. The truly make-up free look has been hinted at over the past seasons, of course. Though, usually the only make-up used was concealer under the eyes or to cover blemishes and uneven tone. However, at this fashion show, the only “make-up” use was a deep burgundy nail polish applied to the toes. Throw away your make-up bags now, ladies. This trend is taking over social media as well, the #nomakeupselfie has replaced perfectly lit or filtered photos as the most popular form of social media “humble bragging”. Perfectly applied makeup has become passé amongst us, now, it’s more desirable to simply appear confident in one’s own skin. Perhaps the motivations drives from simply enjoy that extra sleep in the morning? So the no-makeup movement is split between actively shifting social norms and laziness. Though, we cannot deny that the celebration of natural beauty should make women feel empowered.

hot hot hot hair written by sonya stell

From loose, textured waves, to perfect centre parts, every take on a ponytail and glamorous 60’s inspired styles, we are seeing it all on the runways this fall season. Off-Duty Ballerina: high top knots are being left effortlessly undone versus super sleek, instead of wearing your bun flawlessly slicked back and performance-ready, try a messy look that is super simple and quick. Twist and Shout: tight braids are in! With half-up and half-down styles that are tucked and twisted away into pretty up-dos for a layered effect. Centre Stage: our hair is being separated… into severe centre parts and pulled back into tight ponytails, low buns, hair-up dos or just plain waves. The centre part gives a dramatic look that is stunning! Ponytails Rule: ponytails are popping up everywhere, adorned with beautiful fabrics, sectioned off or multi-layered. We have reinvented the simple, go-to style to something that is chic and polished. Oh... Natural: waves, waves and more waves. If you’ve got natural wavy hair, simply wash and go for a simple and stylish look that has started to take over the runways. Bohemian waves, but with a bit more polished look have been noticed this year. The Lob: not a bob, a “lob” and it is low-fuss for sure. Also known as, the longer version of the bob, was a huge trend this past summer and continues to be hot for fall. We love it because it is very versatile and flattering. Rich Brunette: most of us want a more full-bodied colour with depth and richness by fall, many turn to a brunette colour infused with deep gold and red tones for more character. As it reflects the light differently and picks up your eye colour more vibrantly. Platinum Blonde: some of us are still thinking that platinum will be the big hit this season, as blonds are going lighter than ever right now, especially during the cooler months. Just remember to pick the right shade for your skin tone. The key to hitting the right style this fall, is pick something that you like on yourself. Change up your style and have fun this season with your hair!

old n’ new muscle

written by sonya stell photographed by sonya stell

The late 1960s and early 1970s was a golden era for American automakers, creating some of the best muscles there are. By 1970 imports accounted for only a little over eleven percent of sales, making American muscle cars the sought-after vehicle. Gasoline was plentiful and cheap, and engineers were finding better ways to burn as much of it as possible in halo performance models that earned the brands big headlines and drove up sales. The Chevrolet Nova is a compact automobile manufactured by the Chevrolet division of General Motors produced in five generations for the 1962 through 1979, and 1985 through 1988 model years. The Nova Super Sport was transformed from a trim option to a performance package for 1968 and became one of the smallest muscle cars ever fielded by Detroit. Below is a 1969 Nova SS boasting a big-block 396 V8 engine rated at 350 horsepower, though with some modifications over the years this muscle car is no longer stock.

So can this modern day Camaro keep up with the oldie? It sure can. With a 6.2L V8 engine pumping out 426 horsepower, this muscle car is just as fast and powerful. Given these tough economic times, the Camaro is a car that should not exist; economic crises have a way of killing off muscle cars. Given the fact that the Chevrolet Camaro is flourishing, is perhaps a sign that better times are not far off. When it comes to things like safety and fuel economy, today’s Camaro is light years ahead of its ancestors, yet it is equally as powerful as the most legendary Camaros. The base Camaro V6 has more horsepower than some of the late 70s and early 80s V8 Camaros! If you are looking for a high-performance machine that offers the best dollar-to-horsepower ratio in the business, check out one of these. In Super Sport form, it out-muscles most exotics costing twice as much. This 2012 Camaro SS holds the V8 engine, RS appearance package, 1SS trim option and is specialty painted in “crystal red” - oh, and it is tons of fun! Other car manufacturers are bringing back some of their own oldies as well, with bigger and better engines and a modern look with all of the fuel economy and safety we have available today. Chrysler has brought back the Dodge Challenger successfully with V6 and V8 engine options. Ford, of course has had their Mustang in both V6 and V8 models for quite some time. Each has its own look and feel to the car; so pick your Ford, Chrysler or Chevy and hit the road!

choosing the right tire

written by nancy stell

Making the right decision not only ensures your driving enjoyment but also the safety of your roads trips. Considering you will be traveling thousands of kilometers on these tires, you want to make sure you choose the right ones. Your decision will also depend on how many you need. If you just need to replace one tire due to it being damaged, you want to be sure that you match it exactly to the others. Select the same brand, line, size and speed rating as the ones you already have on your vehicle. If you need two tires, your options are a little more open; however you should try to replace them with a pair that come as close as possible to your existing tires. You should put the two new tires on the back for best results. Replacing all four tires gives you the option to choose the tires that best suites the driving conditions you will face. In our region where we can have a lot of snow, it is recommended that you choose a good set of snow tires for the winter and have another set for your summer driving. This way you won’t compromise your vehicles performance when the road conditions are at their worst. Visit a reliable service centre this fall and have your tires checked and remember that first snow fall always comes sooner than your think so don’t leave it too long before getting those winter tires on!

get those gardens ready written by nancy stell

Soon the warm autumn colours will turn to stark white fields and our summer gardens will be a distant memory, buried under blankets of snow. Here are a few tips to help your garden get a jump-start next spring!

Autumn is also a great time to plant evergreen trees and shrubs. Just be sure to water them well before the ground freezes.

The fallen leaves are garden gold working to create nutrients to fertilize your garden so spread small leaves over exposed soil.

It’s a great time to plant bulbs like tulips, daffodils and crocuses. Plant them in well drained soil at least six weeks before the ground freezes and you will have some beautiful spring colour next year.

This is the time to toss seeds of hardy annuals where you want them to grow next year.

50

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

Adding mulch to your gardens in the fall not only acts as an organic barrier to stop mud from sticking to your shoes, but it also reduces water loss, suppresses weed growth and protects your plants from extreme temperatures.

Moving or dividing your perennials in the fall is a great way to reduce your work next spring. The rule of thumb is, if your plant blooms early spring to late June, then early fall division or moving is ideal. However, if it blooms after late June, then you are best to wait until the early spring to move or divide it. There are a few exceptions to the rule so it’s always best to consult your local garden centre. If you don’t have a lot of time to prep your gardens this fall, it is most important to remove all the plant debris to prevent pests and disease from harboring over the winter.

how to keep young at heart written by nancy stell

As we grow older we often fall into the same old routines, move around a lot less and sometimes forget how to just enjoy life! Well here are some tips on how you can stay young at heart no matter what your age. • Laughter is the best medicine as it lowers stress, improves your memory, can lower your blood pressure and so much more. It also just feels good too, so pay attention to things that make you laugh and smile. • Eating healthy is one of the best ways of staying young and feeling good. It’s not good for you to be over or underweight at any age, so having three proper meals a day is still the way to go. • Bad habits like smoking, too much drinking and eating too much junk food increases your chances of all sorts of illnesses. You are never too old to kick those nasty habits! • You are never too old to learn new things and it has been proven time and time again that an active mind is a healthy mind. Challenge yourself with new exercises, puzzles and other activities that you enjoy. • Engaging in social activities is also important for your mental health. Keep in touch with old friends and try and make new ones, but be careful to only surround yourself with people who make you feel good.

52

InOurSpace | Autumn 2014

• One routine worth keeping is making sure you get enough sleep. Men on average still need about 7 or 8 hours and women about 7 to stay healthy. • Regular exercise is good for you for so many reasons. It helps keep you independent and reduces the risk of so many age related diseases. As you age you should focus on exercises that help your balance, endurance, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises to keep your muscles and ligaments toned. • If you are feeling stressed, find ways to reduce it. Stress ages you and learning to reduce it through exercise, meditation and laughter, will help you live a healthier and happier life. • Remember to stop and smell the roses now that you are at the age where you finally have some time for yourself. There are so many interesting and joyful activities to do so start enjoying life!

Affordable Dentistry An essential part of maintaining your health is having good oral hygiene and many dental insurance plans offer you adequate coverage on your routine care, but what if you need more extensive work and your plan doesn’t cover it? Marketplace Dental Centre now offers their patients a third party financing option that allows you to get the dental care you need today with an affordable and flexible monthly repayment plan. Procedures like Dental Implants can now be a regular part of your oral care. This tooth replacement is a comfortable alternative to bridges, partials or complete dentures and they look like your natural teeth. The titanium metal implant is an artificial root inserted into your jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant that acts as an anchor to hold it in place. Caring for your implant is simple. Since it pretty much looks and acts like your natural teeth, you can keep it clean using a toothbrush and dental floss. Regular check ups are important so your dentist can make sure that your bite is right and that your implants are not loose. Who can get dental implants? If you are in good health with healthy gums and enough bone in your jaw to hold an implant, you are likely a good candidate. For more information on Dental Implants visit www.georgetowndental.com or call their office and book your consultation today!

live work play As the team here at In Our Space magazine, we would like to share our own personal meaning behind living, working and playing in our space. Enjoy hearing the stories of how each of us came to this region, moved away and moved back over the years. Our thoughts on each aspect of living, working and playing. Sonya Stell shares her experiences of living in our space as she has grown up in the middle of these regions and continues to live here. Nancy Stell expresses her passion for working in our space as a longtime employee and entrepreneur of the area. Lastly, Stacey Valente expresses her and her families love of the outdoors as twenty-three year locals to the area. We hope that you enjoy this tidbit of insight into our own lives and if you live, work or play in the area, we hope that you can relate to some of the stories told.

living in our space written by sonya stell

Growing up in the small town of Erin, it was one of the most exciting times when we heard the news that our own Tim Hortons was going to be built. I remember going there for lunch nearly every day after it had opened, then once I had a complete overload of Timmies, the novelty wore off. When my mother and I used to go out of town to do our rounds of shopping, it was always the choice between traveling a half hour south to Georgetown or a half hour north to Orangeville. Both communities had that same “small town” local shopping feel to their downtown cores and the people were always ready to chat and very friendly. When we launched In Our Space magazine in the fall of 2010, we developed many new relationships with the owners of stores and companies we had known for a very long time. Living amongst these great regions was quite the experience, which I only realized how great when I moved outside of Erin and into the cities of Toronto and Mississauga for a few years. I used to take my dog for a walk down the Main Street of Erin, every person would either say “hello” or stop to chat, admiring my overly excited puppy. In the city, everyone is so busy that they just don’t have time to go out of their way to talk throughout the hustle and bustle. Those short conversations with my fellow neighbours, were some of the things I started to miss about home. After I had finished my semesters in university, I moved to Georgetown. I had missed the small town life that I had grown up with and of course, it was nice to move back closer to my parents. Now, when I make my rounds, dropping off the magazines to all of the local shops, I get the opportunity to talk to all of amazing shop-owners who are always so eager to have a great conversation. Then I go back home, sit with my cat and enjoy the peace and quiet that Georgetown has to offer. I have to say, being a new resident of Halton Hills, I haven’t fully moved in yet. Though, because my family and I have been coming down here since the time I was born, as well as my mom and I developing a working connection with many of the local business owners, I am very familiar with the surroundings and happy to be living here. For those of you thinking of moving into the Halton Hills or Headwaters regions, and for those of you who are wondering if you should stay; in my opinion, there is no other place like it. Being so close to the city, if you are looking for a weekend away, you can just hop on the highway and enjoy a few days taste of the city-life. Then be able to come home to a quiet, tranquil place that offers a strong community base, very friendly people and down-to-earth business owners that will help you find the perfect outfit, what to eat for dinner tonight, how to furnish that one last room, get the job done or offer their expert advice to assist you with those do-it-yourselfers. I truly enjoy living in this space we call home and I certainly hope you do too!

working in our space written by nancy stell

Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday when my husband and I moved to this beautiful small town of Erin, then a Village. Here we are 23 years later and still calling it home, and a perfect location to raise our daughter. I first dabbled in the print industry working for the Erin Advocate, privately owned and very much a strong sense of the community, it allowed me to work from home while caring for Sonya. It must have rubbed off on her because fast-forward to 2010 and together we launched In Our Space, home decor and lifestyle magazine. With Sonya at the helm of the computer and me and my long time friend and business associate, Stacey on the road visiting all our potential customers. After years in the business and an entrepreneurial spirit that I was born with, I wanted to bring an affordable outlet for our local businesses to not only advertise their great services, but to tell their stories. After all, who knows their products and services best, but the owners themselves who have put their tireless energies into learning everything they need to know about their businesses. Our premiere issue was an overwhelming success and In Our Space has continued to grow and expand, first into the Headwaters Region and now the Caledon region. Where everyday I get the pleasure of meeting like-minded business owners who are passionate it about what they do, proud to share it with me, and excited to learn how together we can tell their story. And an added benefit, I get to hear and see what’s coming before everyone else! Celebrating 5 years is a milestone we are all excited to have achieved. As the summer fades into the cool autumn days, I am thankful as I travel along the beautiful rolling hills adorning the magnificent fall colours mother nature brings us every year. Excited to hear about the great new ideas our loyal customers have coming or meeting the entrepreneurs of the newly opened businesses who are just beginning their journey. In Our Space is my vision coming true…. It allows us all to tell our stories, share our goods and services and WORK, LIVE and PLAY in this great region we call home!

playing in our space written by stacey valente

After moving to the Headwaters region 23 years ago, we have fully embraced everything great about the region! No matter what the season, the Valente family is always enjoying something to do in this beautiful region we call home. With nature just outside our door, our family, including our Yorkie, Lexie love to go fishing and hiking at Island Lake Conservation Area and also enjoy the hiking trails at the Mono Cliffs Provincial Park and Monora Park. During the hot summer evenings, we are often found cheering for Ronnie’s Men’s Competitive Slo-pitch team at one of the many great outdoor parks found in this region. We also love to play tennis at the outdoor Tennis Courts. The BMX Bike Park is a great location for Michael to run his gas powered remote control cars and catching a round of mini golf or hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range at Lynbrook Family Golf Centre is something we often enjoy. As the summer turns into fall, we often take a Sunday drive through Hockley Valley checking out all the fall leaves and sometimes have taken the Credit Valley Explorer train which travels down to Inglewood. The Alder Street and Tony Rose Recreation Centre is where you find us weekly throughout the winter months cheering on Ronnie and his hockey team and occasionally Merissa and Ronnie enjoy a recreational skate at Alder Street Recreation Centre. Once the snow finally arrives Ronnie and Merissa can often be found snowboarding on the hills at Hockley Valley Resort. Headwaters is filled with lots of amazing things to do for everyone. With great shops, delicious restaurants and Theatre Orangeville providing great entertainment it’s a place we truly enjoy calling home!

home renovation tips & trends written by nancy stell

PAINT! PAINT! PAINT! One of the easiest and inexpensive ways to change up your home is with paint! With endless colour options available, you can add your own personality into your space whether you are painting the walls or even your ceiling, or painting furniture, home dĂŠcor items like curtain rods and picture frames.

Visit your local flea market and those old worn chairs from yesteryear can be an eclectic look when you paint and reupholster them. Mixed in with your new pieces you can create an original look. Even an old chandelier can look great with a splash of colour. In the bedroom, paint your headboard on the wall. Tape off the design where you want to paint and then hang a great picture or piece of artwork in the centre. The illusion is that you have this stunning headboard without taking up any space and without the expense.

If the exterior of your home needs a makeover, one of the easiest ways to change it up is by painting your front door. Red or blue are great for a traditional home while yellow or green suites a more contemporary look. Either way, a colourful front door makes for a more inviting entrance. Visit your local paint store experts and see all the great options available today to transform your home this fall!
