publishers’ note It’s been an exciting spring to say the very least, from balmy weather to another ice storm. Hopefully we are home free now and can all look forward to getting back outdoors into our gardens and planning our backyard retreats as the weather continues to get warmer. In Our Space loves to share the stories of our local businesses who bring us their unique services and talents to help us all enjoy living in this great region. With no exception, this issue is packed full of interesting home ideas that we hope will help you plan your next project just a little bit easier. Your driveway makes the first impression of your home and we have some great ideas on creating a more functional one while adding a little pazza to it. Utilizing natural stone we have crafted a retaining wall capped off with large boarder stones that frame the ash fault, an inexpensive yet striking addition to the exterior of your home. Then matched interlocking stone that provides a beautiful walkway up to the front entrance. Thank you Maarten of Dutch Touch Landscaping for your beautiful work and Ian and the team at GB Stone for all your guidance in helping us choose the right stone for this project. Pools continue to evolve with bolder and more astonishing features than ever before. Glass tiles and knife-edge pools are gaining popularity along with illusion hot tubs and natural design finishes that include a more pond like feel blending into your natural landscape. But remember, many of these elements need to be incorporated right from the onset of your construction so be sure to do your research and plan out everything first so you won’t be disappointed. Page 18. Don’t forget it’s almost time to start planting your gardens and we have a great local farm ready to provide you with everything you need. Our Spotlight is on Rock Garden Farms in Caledon East. With outstanding produce and products from local farmers, you will enjoy the huge selection of flowers, vegetables, fresh baked goods and so much more! And check out the garden tips in this issue on how to plant your very own vegetable garden with the top 10 vegetables you will want to include. Trying to find a better and healthier way to hydrate yourself during the hotter days ahead? Naturally infused water with fresh local fruits and herbs are the perfect way to quench your thirst without adding all that extra sugar that you get from store bought drinks. We have given you just a few great recipes to try this year, but let your imagination and taste buds lead the way and create any combination of flavours that you love. Mixing berries and herbs like mint and Rosemary are just a few ideas worth trying. Remember our story on the custom built English Manor Style Home that we first featured in our fall issue? Well enjoy the ‘final transformation’ as we showcase the kitchen, dining and great room reno that is stylish and functional while in keeping with the original elegance and inspiration that was drawn from the original Elsinge Hall Manor built in 1460. Thank you again for sharing this beautiful home with our readers. Page 12. Proud to call Erin home, we were voted one of the top 50 best towns in Canada to visit…or better yet, to live! Our feature home is a beautiful custom built home designed by famed architect Christopher Simmonds from Ottawa and is located within the charming village of Erin on 55 treed acres that also includes a pond. An amazing opportunity to own a little piece of paradise just 45 minutes from the Toronto International Airport or an hour to downtown. Page 26. And of course we couldn’t go to print without a sneak peak into this years fashion because when all else fails, great hair, trendy make up and an outfit to die for is what is truly on the must have list of every woman. We have some amazing boutiques in our region that bring us quality and distinctive items that are unmatched at any big box store. Check out our fantastic finds and our fashion finds to get some inspiration for your next shopping trip as you explore everything great within our space!

your homes first impression written by nancy stell photographed by nancy stell
Your driveway is a very important part of your front yard landscaping plan as it is what everyone sees first‌ making the first impression of your home! And it not only needs to look great, but it also needs to be durable as it will be driven on every day. Creating a well-designed and functional driveway will take into account many factors including the surrounding landscape and the architectural style of your home. The width and layout combined with accessories will all contribute to the overall needs and budget you have to work with. A popular choice today is combining elegance with practicality when you blend together the low-cost of asphalt with decorative boarders created from stone. Incorporate a beautiful retaining wall and interlocking walkway, and the look will boost curb appeal and help preserve the value of your property. Angling the new driveway incorporating the pie shaped lot, allows for the double width all the way down to the road making this both functional and visually interesting.

Retaining walls are a popular trend and thanks to interlocking, stackable blocks, the project can be completed in a fairly timely manor. The stackable stones are made with a decorative finish on the front and a lip on the back. Fitting snugly against the block below, it creates an interlocking joint that holds up to pressure. These stones are typically recommended for walls less than 3 or 4 four high. There are lots of do it your self video’s and websites you can visit if you are interested in building your own retaining wall, but leaving it to a professional will give you piece of mind that the job is being done right. (Dutch Touch Landscaping of Orangeville put this wall together with beautiful stones supplied by GB Stone of Caledon.) A slanting walkway for a slightly more contemporary look following the roofline of the home adds some additional interest to your overall project. Utilizing colour, tied in with the brick on the home and matching to the retaining wall, pulls everything together nicely. When building your walkway, remember the rule of thumb is you want to allow two people to walk side by side so use four feet as your guide.

Painted Floors As An Option
Interested in Buying or Selling a home in a specific area? Hire a Local Agent! Being represented by an agent who has intimate knowledge of your market area (rather than a ‘family friend’ or ‘relative’) has great value. Local Real Estate agents know market trends, can advise on appropriate price points and understand the best avenues of market exposure for your home if you are selling. They also have access to a network of reputable professionals (attorneys, inspectors, contractors) to call on when necessary. Local Real Estate agents have valuable information at their fingertips beyond the normal scope of a home. Information about school districts, neighbourhoods, service clubs, transportation and points of cultural interest are important elements to be communicated to buyer clients and to be showcased on a listing. When buying or selling a property in a rural setting, finding an agent with this specialty is paramount. Rural Real Estate agents can “ease” buyers into a country lifestyle. They speak comfortably about well and septic systems, conservation control regulations; tax incentive programs, as well as proposed land use and developments (think wind turbines and gravel pits) of adjacent lands. This region is gaining popularity with Buyers from the GTA and other outlying regions that are attracted to a more affordable home and the closer proximity to a rural lifestyle. Agents often have access to new or upcoming listings before they hit the MLS system. Local Agents can preview properties for Buyers. This saves time. Listing agents from the area can make themselves available to be on-site for all showings or to pop by to ensure lights are off and the property is secure. This gives peace of mind to Sellers. Your best bet when it comes to home buying or selling is to find a local agent who is passionate and well informed about the entire region, not just your home!
Getting tired of those old tired scuffed floors? Having them sanded down and restained can be very expensive and messy. One alternative that’s gaining popularity is painting older hardwood floors. You can add solid colour, or be creative adding stripes or any pattern of your choice to a floor. THE IMPORTANCE OF PREP While painting your floors is less labour-intensive than staining, you will need to give your floor a light sanding to “roughen” up the surface. Prep work is the key to ensuring the first layer of paint or primer will adhere properly. There is no need to prime your floor if it already has a finish on it, however a few thin coats of primer can make it easier if you decide to remove the paint years down the road. If you do prime the floor, make sure to use sandpaper to scuff the clear coat to make sure the paint sticks to it well. PICK YOUR PATTERN Painting your entrance floors can make a smaller foyer seem bigger by drawing attention to it by adding thick stripes, diamond or chevron patterns. Once the floor has been properly prepped, lay out your pattern with painter’s tape. Measure your patterns or stripes to make sure they are the same size and your tape is in the proper places. FINISHING YOUR PROJECT When you have finished painting, make sure to add several clear coats on top of it for added protection. Remember to leave extra time for drying in between coats to ensure an attractive and durable result. Water-based products will give you a truer colour, as oil paints can add a hint of gold to it. If you have any questions regarding this project or any others; please stop by the store and ask our experts!

the final transformation written by nancy stell photographed by sonya stell
We first introduced you to this custom built English Manor Style Home in our fall issue of In Our Space, Home Décor & Lifestyle Magazine where we showcased the unique features it offers. As the new homeowners began their journey to completely renovate while maintaining it’s true to character charm, our Holiday/Winter issue highlighted The Drawing Room, The Purple Room, The Red Room, and The Abbots Chamber. Now we would like to show you the final transformation of the main area of the home, the kitchen now combination great room! This area underwent the greatest changes with removing of walls and adding a striking corner fireplace with floor to ceiling stonework making it a true focal point. The fireplace was provided by Caledon Fireplace and the stone was from Eldorada Stone. A restored old barn board created the rustic mantel and came from a collection at Loft Doors in Burlington. The solid oak hardwood floors on the main level lay a beautiful foundation to showcase the custom made Barzottis cabinets – the elite cut design made from cherry wood. The island has the antiqued white high gloss finishing with all the countertops being pure Brazilian Granite. The hardware is oil rubbed brass, which matches the kitchen faucet and side buffet hardware. The stainless steel appliances, crystal chandeliers over the breakfast bar, pot lights and cream pure marble tile backsplash with bone coloured grout, provide all the modern day conveniences we enjoy in todays modern design. A complimentary chandelier hanging over the dining table encapsulates the two distinct areas of this entertaining size kitchen.

The office has also been transformed into the perfect study, with a classic wooden desk and chair, creating an office nook; a deep brown couch and side tables to display unique items capturing the charm of the household. Tastefully renovated to maintain the essence of the original home, with modern upgrades that make this space equally functional and beautiful. The main bathroom and ensuite have also been refinished with new dark slate grey flooring, ungraded countertops, and a fresh coat of paint. Still with the original style of the home, these contemporary additions created a stunning presence. This fall the couple plans to marry on the premises with the intention to then make it available as a quaint venue for future upcoming nuptials. Something you may want to consider if you are looking for a special place to hold your wedding. And once again we would like to thank Gillian Vanderburgh and her clients who have allowed us to share their beautiful home with you.

2016 swimming pool trends written by sonya stell
Glass Tile Last year, glass tile began its trend in the world of high-end swimming pools and spas. Commonly seen at luxury hotels and spas, but now you can add it into your own swimming pool design. Create your personal oasis with this luxurious, beautiful look.
Knife-Edge Pools Last year, infinity pools took our backyards by storm! With water seamlessly flowing over one edge, creating the illusion of a never ending pool. Now, knife-edge pools have done one better, with all four edges flowing over and creating a mirrored effect. This absolutely striking trend is sure to amaze your guests for many years to come. With options to sit in-ground or slightly above, you can design the perfect pool for your backyard space.
Tanning Ledges Everyone loves to have that perfect summer glow, and what better way to achieve that than laying by the poolside? Well now you can lay in the pool side with your very own tanning ledge. Essentially, a large step on the shallow end of your pool, where you can set out loungers and soak up the sun! 18

2016 swimming pool trends continued... written by nancy & sonya stell
Natural Designs Naturally designed pools serve two purposes: blending into the natural landscape and being a more eco-friendly option. Choose an area where you can create a pool that looks like a natural pond or spring. Add in rock details and waterfalls that coincide with natures own versions. You can even add in a beach-like entrance or rocky steps down to the water. To make these pools even more eco-friendly choose plants that will naturally filter your water and eliminate the use of mechanical filters and pumps.
Illusion Hot Tubs Instead of getting out of the pool and running over to the hot tub, you can now just float over and enjoy the warmer temperatures within an illusion hot tub right in your pool! These hot tubs must be included in the initial designs of your swimming pool, as they cannot be easily added in afterwards; so be sure to keep that in mind.
Pebbled Finish Looking for a completely customizable pool finish? How about the latest trend of pebbled finishes? Adding design and shine to your pool with endless options of colours and patterns. This surface is much more durable than a typical pool finish or liner, and allows for an extremely unique, natural and beautiful overall design. Be sure to meet with a local professional and discover all of your options. 20

the top 7 spring plumbing tips written by plumb perfect photographs submitted
The sun is shining and spring is upon us (I hope!). It’s a good time to check your home’s plumbing to prevent problems. Here are our top 7 spring tips: 1. Check Outside Hosebibs – When you turn on your outside tap, or ‘hosebib’, for the first time, be sure to go back inside and check for leaks or flooding. The inside valve or piping may have frozen and cracked over winter. 2. Test Your Sump Pump – Test your pump by pouring buckets of water into the pit to see if the pump removes the water. With the power to the pump off, clear the pit of debris so nothing can clog the pump. Ensure the float is able to function correctly. Check the discharge line outside and clear it of any ice, gravel and debris to prevent water from backing up into your home. If you have a battery back-up sump pump, check the battery. If you don’t have one, consider getting one installed in case of a power outage which usually occurs during rain storms. Extra tip: If your pump is continuously running but no water is pumped out, there’s a blockage somewhere. Turn off power to the pump immediately to prevent the motor from burning out. 3. Care For Your Septic – Spring runoff can quickly fill your septic tank and cause backups. Divert run- off water away from your septic tank and field. During an extreme thaw or heavy rains, limit the use of water in your home. Spread clothes washing over a few days to reduce overloading the system. Use liquid laundry detergents. Powdered detergents contain fillers which solidify in the tank. Switch to dryer sheets as liquid fabric softeners interfere
with the breakdown of waste. Keep the manway cover on to prevent excess water from entering. 4. Test Your Drinking Water –Spring run-off can affect well water. Contaminants are more likely to enter wells during spring thaw and heavy rains. If your water changes colour or develops an odour, get your water tested. Install a proper filter and/or UV sterilizer to protect you and your family. 5. Look For Leaks – Check under all sinks and cabinets for signs of leaking water. Even a small leak left unchecked could cause mould and water damage over time. 6. Save Your Hot Water Tank –Drain your hot water tank and flush out sediment which causes corrosion, reduces heating efficiency and shortens the lifespan of the tank. 7. Look Up, Way Up – Make sure your plumbing vents are clear of ice, debris and even nests to prevent odour and back-ups. Clear out gutters and downspouts and check for damage to them and your roof’s shingles. During winter, ice can form in old gutters and lift up shingles allowing water to enter the home making many people believe they have a plumbing leak. If you are unable to perform the above, please call a professional. For more plumbing tips, please visit www.plumbperfect.ca. InOurSpace | Spring 2016

decorating with the colours of the year written by sonya stell
For the first time, Pantone has chosen not one, but two colours of the year for 2016. Giving us double the opportunity to utilize these trending colours within our homes. The subtle blue of Serenity and the pretty pink of Rose Quartz were formally only thought to be used as “boy” and “girl” colours. But now, with movements towards gender-blurring becoming present in the media, Pantone wants all of us to appreciate these colours for what they truly are: just colours. Our homes are usually set in our own unique style, so keep in mind that trends do tend to come and go; but that doesn’t mean you cannot have fun with them while they last! Add some simple additions that can be easily replaced or recovered when they are not so in-style, or choose items that have a very classic vibe and will stand the test of time. Here are a few items that you can add into your home this spring: RUGS Find a rug that fits your room size, then choose a pattern that compliments your style. Whether that is traditional or modern, throw in a splash of pink or blue... or both!
PILLOWS These shades of blue and pink compliment each other well and no one can ever have too many pillows, right? Pick up some throw pillows for your couch or bedroom that encompass patterns with these striking shades.
BASKETS It is time to get organized! Find some colourful baskets to add into your home for additional storage and start decluttering!
LAMPS Add some fun pops of colour to your side tables and nightstands! Utilize the colours of the year in a cute animal shape, or choose a solid blue or pink lamp in a traditional style that you can enjoy for years to come. 24

POUFS If you are entertaining a large number of guests, sometimes you can run out of space pretty quickly. Add a stylish pouf or two that can be used as an ottoman, table or an extra seat! With lots of styles and colours to choose from, you will surely find one in this years colours of the year.

acres with a pond; the managed forest program allows for low property taxes, and you will enjoyed the beautifully landscaped grounds by a local landscape architect, Juergen Partridge Ltd. who has been providing their services for over 30 years in the Greater Toronto region. And with spring now in the air, you will surely want to enjoy the covered Trex deck, the worlds #1 decking brand since 1996, that is complete with a BBQ and leads to the three season sunroom. Also enjoy basking in the warm sun on the outdoor patio when the weather permits. Another unique feature of this home is the passive solar heating, a design that takes advantage of the local climate in combination with performing an accurate site analysis at the time the home was built. It allows the home to distribute solar energy in the form of heat in the winter and reject solar heat in the summer without the use of mechanical and electrical devises. Combined with energy efficient geo-thermal heating and cooling, three fireplaces and in floor heating in the lower level, you will enjoy year round comfort.

what’s the scoop? written by nancy stell
If you are tired of paying the high prices for your vegetables, here are some tips on how to plant your first vegetable garden…. it’s easy and a great way to save money. First, start small. A good size garden is about 16 feet by 10 feet creating 11 rows wide and each row 10 feet long. The rows should run north and south to maximize the sun. Pick a sunny location, as most vegetables need a minimum of 6 hours per day of direct sunlight to thrive. finding the perfect foundation written by sonya stell
Having flawless looking makeup begins with an excellent base. It is very important to purchase products that are suited to your skin type: dry, oily, combination or mature; and your skins undertone: yellow, pink or neutral. Otherwise you will ended with either too dry or too oily, mis-matched foundations that will only age you. With price points for every budget, you can discover many great finds at your local department or drugstore. For those looking for brands who use vegan, organic and/or higher quality ingredients with highly awarded formulations, check out a makeup boutique or specialty store to find the best brands in the industry. There are multiple ways to apply foundations and your fingers should not be one of them. Using your finger to apply product to your face can transfer bacteria from products packaging, brush handles, and everything else that you touch on your countertop. If you are looking for the best ways to apply your foundation, choose either a brush or a sponge. A brush will apply a full-coverage layer of your foundation and allows you to really buff the product into your skin. The only downside is a lot of brushes will absorb some product into themselves. Be sure to wash your brushes weekly to rid them of any bacteria, and spot clean them after every use.
Yellow Undertone Ideal for skin tones that have a yellow or olive tone. Used to cancel out unwanted redness in the skin.
Using a sponge or “blender” has become a trend within the makeup industry, promising a flawless, airbrushed look. The best way to use a sponge is to fill it up with water, squeeze it out and “bounce” the foundation into your skin. You can build up the product to your desired coverage while evening out any excess product. Be sure to also wash out your sponge with soap or brush cleaner regularly, and replace the sponge every three to six months.
Skin Types Dry Skin Dry skin can be due to being dehydrated, excessive face washing, or genetics. It can be difficult to deal with, as products tend to cling to dry patches and make your skin look even drier. To help counteract these issues, apply moisturizer before you begin your makeup routine (one that is supposed to be extra-hydrating). Next, apply a primer. Again, choose one that is supposed to be hydrating or an oil-based primer. Now, pick up a makeup sponge, fill it up with water and squeeze it out, and apply your foundation. Try to steer clear of any extremely matte foundations, as they tend to cling to dry patches the most. Once you are finished, set with a setting spray instead of powder to kept your skin hydrated.
Pink Undertone Ideal for skin tones that have a pink or reddish tone, with minimal unwanted redness in the skin.
Oily Skin Sometimes the solution to oily skin can be adding more oil into your skin, sometimes that just creates a slippery mess. With your makeup literally melting off throughout the day, don’t fret, you can use these preventative measures to help stay dry all day long. Test out an oil-based primer to see if your skin is producing extra oil because it actually needs it. Otherwise, apply a mattifying primer underneath your foundation along with an oilfree moisturizer. Now, you can use a brush to really buff a matte foundation into your skin and give you that flawless look. Stay away from very “dewy” foundations and set with powder throughout the day. Combination Skin For combination skin types, you will need a combination of the dry skin and oily skin routine. Apply your moisturizer, then apply a hydrating primer only to the dry parts of your skin, and a mattifying primer only to the oily parts of your skin. Apply your foundation with a brush or sponge, whichever you personally prefer, and then only set the oily parts of your skin with powder, leave the rest bare. Mist a light coat of setting spray over your face and you are ready to go! Mature Skin To cover up fine lines and wrinkles, use an age-defying moisturizer and a pore-filling primer. Stick with hydrating foundations and stay away from powders, as our skin tends to dry out as we age. 44

manicures: styles and shapes written by sonya stell
Getting your nails done can be very relaxing; you can sit back and enjoy as a talented nail artists creates a beautiful piece of art from your own natural nails. Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to decided what type of manicure you would like, what shape and what style. Below are some facts about the various options you have for your nails to help you better decide the next time you visit the salon.
Manicure Types
Manicure Shapes and Styles
Square Shape The nail tip is squared off with slightly rounded edges so they are not sharp.
Basic Manicure This type of manicure is ideal for someone who is new to getting manicures or only wants their natural nails painted. After some lotions have been applied, you can choose what length and shape you prefer for your nails. Once the shape has been defined, a clear base coat will be applied to your natural nail first. Afterwards, a polish of your choice is applied usually two to three times. Lastly, a top coat to protect the polish. You will then place your hands under a nail dryer to complete the drying process. Gel Manicure If you are seeking a long lasting manicure without the potential damage of acrylic nails, getting a gel manicure is an excellent option. All the steps of a basic manicure are taken, though you can have an artificial nail tip added onto your own nail to add length and thickness. A coat of gel is applied over top of your entire nail to smooth out any imperfections and is then set under a UV light. A special gel polish is used that also requires curing under a UV light, and typically last days longer than the polish used for a basic manicure. Acrylic Manicure These manicures have been the staple in the beauty industry for years. Similar to the process of a gel manicure, but differing in the way that acrylics are applied using a liquid monomer and powder polymer to create a hard protective layer over your natural nails. Acrylics harden once exposed to air and do not need to be cure by a UV light. Gel versus Acrylic Manicures Producing very similar results, both can lengthen short nails, strength nails and make your figures appear longer and more slender. Pros of acrylic nails include: if you break an acrylic nail you can usually fix it yourself; the removal process is simple; acrylics are very strong and tend to cost less. Cons of acrylic nails include: they can damage your nail bed and create a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria; may look less natural; and the application process involves strong chemicals. Pros of gel nails include: gel nails may look more natural and glossy; the curing time is faster than acrylics; the application process lacks fumes and is considered safer. Cons of gel nails include: they don’t last as long and are less durable than acrylic; cannot be done at home easily; and often need to be filed off, although there are some soak-off removals. Always consult a professional to determine the best choice of manicure for yourself. 46
InOurSpace | Spring 2016
Oval Shape The nail tip is rounded off in an oval or “almond” shape.
Pointed Shape The nail tip tapers to a point and is filed down to not be sharp.
Coffin Shape The nail tip tapers similarily to a pointed shape, but has a flat tip.
tattooing 101: cover-ups written by nancy stell
The art of tattooing is increasingly more popular today than ever, finding its way into the mainstream population. Just about every age group is drawn to this unique form of expression that personalizes and encapsulates special dates, memories and people who you want to keep close to you forever. And for the most part, tattoos are a permanent expression of who you are on the inside and out! But sometimes what seemed like a good idea at the time turns out to be a constant reminder of a bad decision OR the tattoo artist you chose wasn’t actually the best choice after all. With tattoo removal still being a relatively new art in itself and a little pricey, a talented tattooist can do wonders with a cover-up tattoo.
Remember, there are still limitations on covering up an old tattoo, but with the right artist you can create an amazing new piece to show off for years to come. Here’s how a cover-up works: your tattoo involves ink being deposited about one millimeter beneath your skin into the dermis. When you get a cover up, the new ink is also deposited within the dermis along with the original ink from the first tattoo. The pigment from the new ink won’t actually cover up the pigment from the old ink, but rather blend together to create a new colour with the stronger or darker coloured ink becoming the dominant one. For example, blue and yellow mixed together makes green, or red and blue ink mixed together makes purple. Black therefore, is the most effective colour to cover up an old tattoo, but might not the look you are going for. A good rule of thumb when choosing the colours for your cover-up is: a darker shade of a colour can cover itself. So a light green can be covered with an emerald green or a pink can be covered with a red. Working with a strategy for placing the new design over the original one, a good tattoo artist will consider the colour in your old tattoo and how it will mix with the colour choices in your new tattoo. This is why it is extremely important to make sure you find a reputable tattoo artist who has experience in performing these cover-ups. First they will trace your old tattoo to give them a reference of the areas to be covered. They then put the outline on a light table and place another piece of thin tracing paper over it. Now they can begin to design the new tattoo camouflaging the areas that need it. A talented tattooist will incorporate the old design drawing the eye away from the parts of the old tattoo being covered up. Often the new tattoo is about 30% larger than the original tattoo, something to keep in mind when making the decision to cover it up. If you love your tattoo, but just don’t like the colour, this is an easier fix as you can change up many colours by using darker inks. For example, pink to magenta or red to brown. So don’t feel stuck with a bad tattoo. Find an expert in the field, ask to take a look at their portfolios so you can see samples of their work before you go ahead, and start planning a whole new look. InOurSpace | Spring 2016

a spring makeover for your home written by nancy stell
Spring is in the air…. But it is still a little cool to be working outside. Why not freshen up some areas within your home to brighten up your living space and get you warmed up for the changing season. Choose one of your problem areas; everyone has one, like an over stuffed closet or cluttered garage. Purge through the items you no longer are using and perhaps donate them to local charities. Are your windows looking a little hazy these days? Start the windowwashing chore now by tackling the inside. This way you will have half the job done when the warm weather hits. You can use a home made solution of one cup of white vinegar to three cups of water and a ½ teaspoon of grease cutting dish soap. Put it in a spray bottle and you can buff your windows dry using old newspaper.
Organizing all of your papers and books can be a real chore. Why not add a built-in bookcase or shelving unit to your room to help de-clutter the area and make it feel more spacious.
Painting is one of the easiest ways to brighten up a room. Create an interesting focal point with an accent wall or paint the entire room. I would recommend that you choose the room that you are going to be spending most of your time in. 48

An easy way to give your bathroom and/or kitchen an inexpensive make over is by changing up the hardware. Today’s options are limitless ranging from contemporary to traditional, even whimsical and colourful. Hand towels and dishtowels can introduce a splash of colour and striking new overhead light fixtures can make the space look absolutely distinctive.
changing your oil written by sonya stell
We all know that you need to get your oil changed every 5,000 - 10,000 kilometres, but why? If you look in your car’s manual it’ll suggest how often you should get your oil changed, but it won’t let on to the secret as to why. Luckily, getting your oil changed is one of the least expensive auto maintenance services your car needs. Despite it being relatively inexpensive, having your oil changed regularly and on schedule plays a critical role in preserving your vehicle and saving you money. Oil is the lifeline of your vehicle. It keeps the many components of the engine working efficiently, and it helps reduce the accumulation of varnish and carbon from collecting on the engine. The engine can get very hot from the thousands of small explosions taking place every minute; oil helps pull the heat away from the combustion chamber essentially preventing the engine from blowing up. As oil collects heat, varnish and carbons during the course of protecting and keeping the engine running smoothly, it eventually becomes less like liquid and more like sludge. No matter how good the oil is, eventually it degrades as the additives get used up. That’s when you should have your oil changed. How often and what kind of oil should be used? It will depend on the type of oil you choose to use, what kind of car, and how often you drive. This is where your owner’s manual will come in handy. The old adage suggests every 3 months or 5,000 kilometres. The amount of kilometres you drive is more important than the amount of time. You may go on a road trip and burn through a few thousand kilometres in a few weeks, or it may take five months before you reach the recommended mileage. Pay attention to the odometer and how you’ve been driving your vehicle. Driving in extreme weather or towing a lot of weight behind your car will affect your oil too. If you don’t think you have the time or money to get your oil changed and you choose to wait, eventually the oil will get worse and worse, becoming more like sludge and clog your engine. Engines are expensive to clean, and replacing a worn-out piston is not an auto repair bill you’ll want to receive. Bottom line: It’s worth the time and minimal cost of a routine oil change. Here is a list of the different types of motor oils and why they are best for each vehicle. Remember to always check your owners manual and listen to your mechanic for the best advice on which to choose.

Conventional Oil: This is the oil used in bulk at dealerships and is the cheapest at the auto store, too. Most adhere to API and SAE standards but offer little in the way of additive packages. This is good oil for owners that are religious about frequent oil changes and have lowmile (but well broken-in) engines. Premium Conventional Oil: This is the standard new-car oil. Most leading brands have one for SL, or highest level, service. Most are available in the common viscosities. Car manufacturers usually specify 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil, though some require 10W-30. These three ratings cover just about every light-duty vehicle on the road, though this is changing as engines become more precise and fussy about specific types oil. Full-synthetic Oil: These oils are made for high-tech engines. These oils pass stringent special tests (indicated by their labeling), which means they have superior, longer-lasting performance in all the critical areas, from viscosity index to protection against engine deposits. They flow better at low temperatures and maintain peak lubrication at high temperatures. While excellent oil, synthetics are about three times as expensive as conventional oil and are not always necessary for every engine. Use the owner’s manual as a guide. If it doesn’t call for synthetic oil, using it will only be an additional expense that may not add anything to the engine’s performance or life. Synthetic-blend Oil: This is essentially premium conventional oil hit with a dose of synthetic. They’re formulated to offer better protection during heavier engine loads and the associated higher engine temperatures. These oils are popular with pick-up and SUV drivers because they do offer better protection, but usually cost only a fraction more than premium conventional oils. High-mileage Oil: More than 60 percent of vehicles on the road have more than 120,000 kilometres on the odometer. Playing to this growing market, oil refiners and labs developed high-mileage oils. Seal conditioners are added to the oil (the oil can be synthetic or conventional) to expand and increase the flexibility of internal engine seals. The conditioners are very precise and can benefit some engines while not affecting others.
