five reasons to book with a travel agent written by flight centre
1. Experience: Travel Agents make their living knowing all the steps of the travel booking process. If you’ve got questions, we have answers. There’s nothing worse than finding that special ‘deal’ you got online isn’t that special after all. We not only have first hand experience and reviews on destinations, but we also have reviews from our clients, which means that we can tell you what’s great about each resort or country to help you plan your dream trip! 2. Travel Insurance: No one likes to think about something going wrong on their trip, but the reality is that stuff happens. Travel Agents know everything there is to know about travel insurance, meaning that you will be informed as to which travel insurance plan best suits you. In Ontario, buying from a travel agency that is registered with TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario) will assure that you can purchase travel products knowing that you are protected. 3. We Do the Work For You: Life is hectic enough as is! Who has time to search everywhere for the best deals, reviews, make bookings for flights, hotels, tours, train reservations and travel insurance? We do! Take a load of stress off your plate and let a Travel Agent do the dirty work for you! We’ll keep you in the loop during the entire process and ensure that the options we send your way meet all of your needs. 4. We’ve Got Your Back: We work for you, not the travel companies. We are here to assist you in booking your dream holiday and will go to great lengths to ensure your trip is as memorable as can be. Nothing is more satisfying for us than having a happy client. 5. We’re in the Know: Travel Agents have all of the inside scoop on the deals within the travel industry. If you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck, a Travel Agent is the way to go. We can inform you when the best time to travel is – because sometimes switching your dates by one day can save you hundreds of dollars! Flight Centre also has the Lowest Airfare Guarantee and the Price Beat Guarantee which means that in the event you DO find something cheaper, we can beat it!

Are you considering a “focal wall”? If you’re afraid of using too much dramatic colour in a room but still want to make a bold statement, consider an accent wall. It can make a room pop without being overwhelming. However, picking which wall to paint in the room is the secret behind success in this strategy. There are a number of factors to determine this. Consider basic “colour theory” and how warm hues - reds, oranges, yellows - play tricks on perception. Warm colours will tend to pull a wall towards the eye. If you paint a wall bright red, for example, that wall will seem closer to you than a white wall. Pick a wall that can tolerate being “fore-shortened” like this, perhaps the farthest or longest wall in the room. Using this colour theory, painting a side wall red can make a room feel too narrow, but painting an end wall in a long, narrow room will make the room feel more balanced in size. Keep in mind also that accent walls work best when there seems to be a logical reason why a particular wall invites special treatment, compared to other walls in the room. A dramatic architectural feature like a fireplace or a piece of furniture like a bed would be examples of which wall you want to stand out.
Most Rural Properties are not connected to Municipal Water. Therefore, an important aspect of the due diligence process when purchasing a rural home is to evaluate the well and water system. Any Offer of Purchase should always include a requirement to establish Well Water Quality. This is important not only to ensure safety, but it is mandatory information for most financial lenders. Water must be safe for consumption and the well must provide good water supply to accommodate normal household requirements. A good first step in this Diligence process is to have your Real Estate Sales Representative obtain a copy of the “Well Record”. If this is not in the current owner’s possession it can often be obtained from The Ministry of the Environment. If available, this document will outline key details about the well including location, whether it is dug, bored or drilled and the diameter/material of the casing.
As well, don’t limit your accent wall options to just paint. Consider the impact that wallpaper could have on the room to give it that wow factor.
GillianVMakingitEasy
Having a local “Water Guy” or “Licensed Well Technician” out to the property is another prudent step in the diligence process. Local technicians often have first hand knowledge about water quality and supply in the region. Once on-site, they will inspect the pump/pressure tank system, do a visual inspection of the well itself and measure the flow /recovery rate. Not only can they help you familiarize yourself with the water system, they are also an excellent resource for learning about any known problems in the region, if any. Their expertise and guidance are of tremendous value. Another critical step is to determine the potability of the water. Is it safe to drink? Have your Real Estate Sales Representative visit the nearest Public Health office to pick up sterile sampling bottles. These are free of charge, easy to use and include excellent ‘how-to instructions’. Samples are couriered (also free of charge) to Public Health Ontario Laboratories where they measure E.Coli and Coliform bacterial levels. Verbal results are usually available over the phone within a few business days and a hard copy of the report can be picked up or mailed, if requested. If the results prove unsatisfactory, it is advised to consult a water treatment technologist who can suggest appropriate treatment systems and more importantly, the costs involved. There are also ‘Esthetic Elements’ to water. Hardness (calcium and magnesium) can lead to a soap scum build up and causes pots to scale. Chloride causes the water to taste salty and Iron and Manganese can give a foul taste/smell and can stain plumbing fixtures. One good result is not enough. A Real Estate Sales Representative familiar with rural water systems will request three samples taken at minimum one week intervals to better reflect the system stability. Taking the time to fully evaluate, familiarize and understand the water system on your rural purchase gives great peace of mind. Clean, Safe drinking water is a privilege and such an important part of our everyday. 10

welcome the neighbours written by sonya stell
Your neighbours will be oh-so-jealous when they see one of these hanging on your front door. Raid your craft closet and the store for fun, seasonal add-ons that will make your door the envy of the neighbourhood. Look for things like decorative sticks (that bend), cute owls, pine cones, and feathers.
base itself can just be a cardboard floral craft ring or cardboard cutout. Choose a colour scheme, perhaps orange, yellow and red for fall and then pick up some faux hydrangea’s. This way you do not have to worry about your festive door decoration shrivelling up and drying out.
If you cannot find every item, customize it based on your taste and supplies. The feathers, though, can be simply cut out of paper into familiar feather shapes as an alternative.
A picture-perfect wreath is one that is pretty and feminine. Try creating a ruffled wreath and use buttons and brooches as decoration. This one is a little tougher to make though, as you require a sewing machine and some talent to get a ruffled fabric effect. If you do not have one, you can simply wrap the fabric around the wreath base and use the colour scheme and embellishments to make this wreath look welcoming.
Consider creating a monogram wreath! Make your door decor personal this season by painting a wooden letter to attach to your wreath. Choose something fun, like a polka-dot pattern oversized letter, and then balance it out with flowers and ribbon on the opposite side of the wreath. Get the kids involved with this one and ask them what they want the family colours or pattern to be, then reflect that in the monogram! Hydrangea Wreath: a very flowery wreath that is deceptively simple! The 12

Burlap Wreath: the best part about this incredible simple wreath is that the floral embellishments can be changed according to season. You can attach snowflakes in the winter, brighter flowers in the spring and so on. Repurpose old hair clips to use as centres, cut out petals from your favourite fabrics and attached the flowers with the clips so they will easily detach.

here we go again written by sonya stell
Turtlenecks, ponchos, French manicures, nude lips... oh my! We have seen them all once, and now here we go again! It is not news to anyone that if you keep something long enough it will come back in style... though, you probably shouldn’t keep anything for that long, but “to each their own”. Just in case you happen to have stock piled over the last twenty, thirty, forty or so years, here’s a list of some of the hottest things that you might just be able to find in the back of your closets and cupboards. Turtlenecks: the turtleneck has definitely been that one item of clothing that has been labeled as horrific from time to time. But not anymore! Step back everybody, the turtleneck is back and here to stay! With celebrities jumping on the bandwagon to bring back this 70’s trend, it is no surprise that it has now become one of the “staples” that every woman now needs. You should definitely take a moment to appreciate the versatility of the turtleneck and put those horrific thoughts back where they came from! Ponchos: remember the knitted, holey, tassel adorned ponchos of the early millennium? You may have thought you were the coolest person around while rocking your poncho, tassels and all. Every Mom-on-the-go bought one for themselves and their kids, friends had matching ones, and then... they disappeared as quickly as they came. Now, they’re back! But disguised under a different name: “capes”. Those of us who remember the original poncho are not fooled by this so-called cape, but we have to admit, this version is a lot prettier than the last. ‘‘ Lashes: does anyone else remember the Twiggy days, with thick heavy upper lashes and spiky black bottom lashes? Well, you guessed it! The lashes are also back in style! Inspiring women everywhere to apply a heavy coat of blackest black mascara until your lashes morph into little spikes of heavenly lash-fashion. Nude Lips: doesn’t everyone search for that perfect nude lip? Kim Kardashian tells us “A nude lip is always sexy!” and we agree! Finding that perfect “your-lips-but-better” shade can prove difficult, but once you do, you will never stray. This look is perfect for no-makeup days, evening makeup, and just about every kind of makeup day there is. The pale colour looks stunning on nearly all skin tones, with options for fair skinned, tan skinned and darker skinned women. So go... go find your shade! 16
InOurSpace | Autumn 2015
Cascading Waves: for those of you who have naturally wavy or curly hair, you are probably saying “Thank God!” right about now; but for those of you with naturally pin-straight hair, you may be shedding a tear or two. Big, defined, beachy waves have made the comeback ladies! Personally, I am excited! Being able to wash-n-go is amazing and saves so much time in the mornings! For those straight-haired gals, there are a few products on the market that may be worth a shot: sea salt sprays and foams. Many, many brands have come out with their own versions, claiming to infuse your hair with the natural salt of the ocean for a wavy look. Give it a try and see how it works on your hair! Pink Hair: oh, the 90’s... how we were graced with such interesting, bright, colourful trends. Gwen Stefani swapped her signature platinum blonde hair for a high-impact pink flip. Though, that may not be “all the rage” right now, subtle pink highlights are an interesting twist on this interesting trend. A subtle hint of rose colour within light hair can look stunning! Plus, there are plenty of temporary options available if you are just looking for a fun one-time pink do. French Manicures: aside from the perfect red lip, nothing is more classic or timeless that a French manicure! The white tipped nails seem to have been around forever, giving off classic, elegant feelings. If you are looking for a new spin on this old favourite, try it in a different shape or add some embellishments! 90s Grunge: all things 90’s seem to be having a major comeback these days! With the typical grunge look being seen more and more on our televisions and our streets, we know the 90s are back with a bang! Heavy eyeliner, berry coloured lips, messy hair and leather jackets complete this look, while giving off that easy uncaring vibe about your style. Though, this may not be for everybody, those who are less adventurous can take pieces of the style and mix it into their one. Leather jackets are always an excellent piece to any outfit, so next time your picking one out, try a jacket with a more rocker-feel to it and see if you like it! Berry lips and brown-toned pinks have been in style, with or without grunge, so step outside your comfort zone and give a new shade a try! Wind-swept hair is sometimes not a hard thing to achieve, but you can try adding dry shampoo to your roots on second-day hair and fluff it up as much as you want.

lashes, lashes, lashes written by sonya stell
Framing the windows to our souls, lashes are an extremely important step in any woman’s makeup routine, but it can be a struggle to find the right products to get the right look for you. Here are some tips and popular brands that will help you put your best lash forward: It’s Not So Complicated When choosing a mascara, it is important to remember that it actually is not so complicated. Begin by looking at the wand, which should tell you exactly what the product is going to do to your lashes. A long and skinny wand, will lengthen but not volumize your lashes; a short and fat wand will volumize but not dramatically lengthen, and so on. Let’s Get Lengthy Looking for the ultimate length with no clumps and controllable volume? An affordable option is Rimmel London’s XX-Treme Volume & Length Mascara. This mascara contains a dual action brush that defines and lengthens lashes from root to tip, with the opposite side loading up the lashes with volume if you please. For those of us looking for a high-end mascara, try Benefit’s They’re Real for the ultimate separation and lengthening. Just beware, this stuff really sticks, so you’ll need to take your time removing it! Bigger Is Always Better For everyone of us who have short, thin and fair lashes, we are always looking for that extra boost! Here is a mascara that will fit the budget and get the job done: Maybelline New York’s Volum’ Express The Colossal Mascara. There Mega Brush gives you the most colossal lashes in just one coat and builds 9X the volume without clumps. Another favourite of many women, is Better Than Sex Mascara by the high-end brand Too Faced. This fibre brush adds a whole other level of volume to your lashes with its ultimate black formula and long-lasting capabilities. Fabulously Fanned Fanned out lashes are the best of friends to those who have round eyes or eyes that angle slightly downward on the outer corners. With Loreal Paris USA’s Voluminous Butterfly Mascara you can stretch and extend your lashes like wings! With a butterfly-like brush you can lift the outer corner and instantly volumize your lashes at the roots and stretching outwards. A high-end version is Benefit’s Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara inspired by hair rollers, this mascara super curls and lifts to open up the eyes. You can say goodbye to your eyelash curler with this one! Falsely Faux If you have given every mascara on the market a try and still your lashes are just not big enough, it is time to add on a pair of falsies. With many brands available at affordable prices like Quo and Ardell, you can have your fun without breaking the bank! But for the ultimate quality in lashes, there are plenty of high-end lash brands that create the most unique and beautiful lashes out there. Check out House of Lashes and their famous Iconic lashes for a smoldering look! Or try out Velour Silk Lashes in one of their many, many styles. The key to successfully pulling off any false lash is having the right glue. Duo Eyelash Adhesive is well known in the industry and is very affordable. However, you should speak to your local beauty expert and see what glue they recommend for the type of lashes you are purchasing. With many different options including: brush-on and traditional tubes, it really comes down to your own personal preference and what you can work with. 20

june’s story: I won my war! written by june, a patient of the ontario migraine clinic
Toronto Location 212 King Street West, Suite 500 Toronto, Ontario M5H 1K5
Georgetown Location 83 Mill Street, Suite 304 Georgetown, Ontario L7G 5E9
Now accepting new patients, no referrals required. Visit migraineclinic.ca
Contact (905) 702-0625 or info@migraineclinic.ca for an appointment. I wake up in the morning to discover the war has not ended throughout the night. That the lights I see are not fireworks celebrating the victory but, the lights that are created inside my head. They are dim, they are bright, spots and flashes, blindness and darkness. They can flash like a strobe light at raves. Sometimes it feels like I’m at a rave. Loud, confusing, hyper, exhausting, spinning, over crowded, bright, dark, a kaleidoscope of colours. A party that will only become too intense. I know I want to take the handful of beautifully coloured and shaped pills endlessly offered to me. I need them. I want them. These little pills will take me somewhere else. Somewhere better. For this is a party that I didn’t get invited to. I wasn’t informed before I was pushed through those doors that I could never leave. That I could never be happy again. That I had entered a living hell and I would live there for eternity. My hell, is inside my own body. This is hard to explain unless you have experienced it yourself. What I’m talking about is migraine and how I managed to defy eternal turmoil and get my life back. This is my story. I was 14 years old and I was on a trip with my family. We had rented a cottage and we were driving home from town after a fun evening of bowling, when we stopped at a fruit stand to buy some berries. The blackberries were so beautiful that we ate the whole basket on the way back to the cottage! Like a snap of the fingers I had intense pain, throbbing and burning down the left side of my face and neck and I thought my eye ball was going to pop out from the pressure. My skin hurt all over my body like I had a terrible sunburn. I felt like a vampire being exposed to light and I was spinning out of control with vertigo. I screamed and coiled in pain. We arrived back at the cottage where I could barely get out of the car. I started vomiting which made all of the other pain even more excruciating. I curled into the fetal position in the bathtub and begged for no one to touch me as my skin was on fire.
I would arrive home intoxicated with medication, unable to finish my work from that day, unable to enjoy my husband’s company or any activities or hobbies and unable to eat. I would crawl into bed and pray that I could sleep. Only to wake the next morning and repeat. After a short 2.5 year marriage, I was divorced. I don’t blame my ex-husband for ending our marriage as what kind of partner could I be? I knew the exact moment that he had decided it was over. I was visiting yet another neurologist about my migraines and the neurologist actually said to me “we, as medical professionals do not know how migraines start or why they behave the way they do or even what they really are, you will have to learn to live with them”. I looked at my husband through my tears and saw that not only was I defeated but, that he also was tired of suffering from migraines and he could no longer “live with them”. I was so fortunate to have several really great friends and my family was very supportive. Everyone always tried to help me through my difficult days and to encourage me to keep searching for help. I lived a very limited life when it came to social activities. I began to say no to any and all invitations to social events as I couldn’t predict how bad of a day I was going to have and the evenings and nights were always the worst. My closest friends and family would celebrate my birthday and holidays with a breakfast or brunch so that I may be able to attend. I continued to live this life trying a variety of drug therapies, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and Chinese medical doctors. I travelled across Canada and the United States, Europe and South America in search of anyone that offered help. I had no success. Surprisingly, I did not feel any anger towards all the people that tried to help and failed, as they were only doing what they knew to the best of their ability. I did however become quite depressed from side effects of medications and my limited, unhappy life.
I stayed this way for several hours as my parents pleaded with me to go with them to the hospital. There was no hospital close by. It would be hours of travel to get there and there was no way I was getting back into a car.
One day, as I was driving to work, I heard a radio interview with The Ontario Migraine Clinic’s Brendan Cleary. He is an acupuncturist that is very successful in treating migraine. I didn’t give it much thought as I had, had acupuncture treatment many times in the past with no relief.
And then….everything stopped as fast as it started and although I was tired, it seemed like nothing had happened.
A few weeks passed and I couldn’t get this interview out of my mind. Brendan Cleary had explained migraine and his approach to treatment that actually made sense to me and I decided to at least have a consultation.
We blamed the blackberries. Wondering if they were contaminated with something, as we couldn’t think of anything that could cause such quick symptoms other than a poisoning. No one in my family had ever experienced a migraine. What I also didn’t know is that this was my first migraine of many to come and my life would be barely livable. For 14 years I followed the same daily routine. I would wake up with a mild headache, dizziness, nausea and a blind spot in my right eye. As the day progressed, my symptoms would get far worse with the addition of slurred speech, spontaneous paralysis of the left or right side of my face and occasionally my left arm. My skin would hurt so horribly. By 5pm I would have to pull over on the shoulder of the road, get into the back seat, leave the door open so I could be sick outside, swallow a handful of pain medications and hope they would stay down long enough to start working and wait for things to subside enough to drive home. I travelled for my sales position so this was my only option. 22

I arrived at the clinic with my migraine almost at it’s peak and the clinic was packed with patients. Some very sick with their migraines, some smiling and laughing and some with a look of shock on their faces. I was greeted by a very kind receptionist who escorted me into a treatment room. Here, I finally met this acupuncturist, that I was sure wasn’t going to be able to help, like all the others. After a brief discussion about my problem he asked if I would be okay with having some treatment to get rid of the migraine that I presently had. I, of course, said “you can try” with little enthusiasm and lots of skepticism. He took my wrists individually and assessed my pulse. With this he was able to determine where he needed to put the needles to alleviate my migraine symptoms. He placed a few needles, which I expected would all be in my head but, they were in my hand, arm, ankle, head and ear. Strange, I thought but, within minutes my migraine started to diminish. In a few more minutes, it was almost gone and after about 15 minutes I did not have any migraine symptoms! I had not had a minute without some degree of suffering in 14 years! I
was now one of the people with this shocked looked on my face. We then proceeded to discuss my health problems and concerns and how it effected me including my mental state. No one ever asked me how I was coping. I felt such ease that someone was finally listening and cared. Brendan explained why I had migraines. I never was given an explanation for why I suffered the way I did. I had been repeatedly told that there was no explanation for migraines and that there was no way of treating them. Only drug therapy would help control them. This however, is not the case. He explained to me, in a language that I was able to understand, why the acupuncture treatment I would receive would work. To summarize, Brendan explained that migraine is a result of my body not working optimally. That various things that had happened to me over the years had caused my body to become weaker. My body is designed to heal itself quite efficiently but it can be compromised by day to day challenges. For me, I had, had multiple concussions and head and neck injuries. I also was sick frequently as a child and took antibiotics repeatedly. As my system became weaker and weaker I was not able to tolerate normal every day stresses and consequently I would end up with a migraine. I had just reached a point that day at the cottage and eating blackberries where I simply couldn’t handle any more. This made sense. This I could understand. This consultation that I was so skeptical about would finally change my life in a positive way. Brendan informed me that I would need a minimum of 2 treatments per week and that I would still experience migraines during this time while my body was starting to fix itself. He also taught me breathing exercises that I was to do during the treatment as well as on my own. Each treatment took between 20-30 minutes. He also explained that I could continue to take the medications that I was using to help with the pain, as needed, so I could still function. I left the clinic still in shock but with the first glimmer of hope that I had felt in a long time. I slept through the night, which is something I also was unable to do over the years and woke up very confused. I hadn’t woken up without pain for so long that I thought something was very wrong with me. When I finally realized that I in fact was just fine and had no migraine, I cried with sheer joy! After a few weeks of treatment I had only had four migraines. I had reduced my medication use by half within 6 weeks and was completely without all of my migraine symptoms after 16 weeks of treatment. At the clinic I met some really wonderful supportive people who have remained great friends. I also met a few famous people as Brendan treats all kinds of different problems, like concussions and chronic injuries so I met a few pro athletes as well as some tv personalities. People come from all over the world seeking help from this clinic and from all walks of life. It was helpful to see others who had also been suffering getting better and sharing our stories and struggles with each other was comforting. I continued to have treatment 2x a week for about another 3 months. After this 3 month period I had treatment about once a week for another month and then every other month and still visit the clinic once or twice a year for a tune up. At times it was really difficult to fit in my treatments. It was really hard to push myself to go when I was feeling great but, I knew I had to commit to getting better and would do whatever it took to stay healthy. Because, there are so many people who suffer from migraine or know someone who suffers from migraine, I feel that I need to share with as many people as possible, my story and the clinic and man that saved my life. I am now happily remarried. I have two beautiful children. I am able to attend all of my children’s activities and I have a date night with my husband once a week. I am able to run, hike, canoe, dance, golf and play volleyball again. I say “yes” to all invitations and I genuinely feel that every day is special. Fourteen years of my life were sacrificed. I have a lot of catching up to do! Know that there is help. Fight for your health and your happiness. I strongly urge anyone who sufferers or knows someone who suffers to call the clinic that I attended as it just may be the best decision of your life. I met many people who were suffering much worse than myself and for most of their lives. They too got better. I won my war! InOurSpace | Autumn 2015

mortgage renewal made easy written by randy button
As we at last pack away our flip flops and outdoor furniture and prepare for our long winter hibernation, it’s a good time to think about your home and, in particular, your mortgage. Pull it out of the drawer and dust it off. Renewals mark a good opportunity to re-evaluate your financial progress and can reveal ways to free up cash flow or ways to pay down a mortgage sooner. Whether renewing it at term or earlier, here are a few things to consider. Today’s Rates If you’re renewing your mortgage this year, like a majority of Canadians at the time, you probably purchased a five-year fixed mortgage back in 2010. Rates then were around 4% or 5%, give or take. Today, rates are lower. For instance, right now, a five-year fixed mortgage is at 2.64%*. Rates like this mean you could be looking at lower monthly payments by as much as a few hundred dollars. Nice, especially if you need to increase cash flow for school, kids or renovations. But, if you’re accustomed to your current payment level, you might opt to keep it the same and pay off your mortgage a little sooner. That’s nice too. Refresh Your Financial Plans A mortgage renewal is a good time to revisit your financial plan. Chances are things have changed a little or a lot since you signed on. Maybe you’ve got a lingering line of credit or maybe it’s time for new windows or you’re finally ready to renovate your kitchen. By now, you’ve accumulated some equity in your home so you can use your mortgage to consolidate debts or borrow a little to put towards renovations. Or maybe you’re earning more today than you were five years ago, changing your financial goals. You might now be in a position to take advantage of flexible payment options and pay twice a month, increase

your monthly payment amounts or schedule an extra lump sum payment. Putting even a little more toward your mortgage can shave years off of it and save you money in interest. Time to Sign? So how do you go about renewing your mortgage? • Start looking at renewal about six months before your mortgage is due. Give yourself time to look at all your options, and take the opportunity to discuss plans. You might want to talk about a 90-day early renewal option, which allows you to renew early, without penalties, yet lock in at today’s good rates. • Look at the details. It’s not just about rate, though that’s important -- it’s also about amortization and payment strategies, getting the support you need to save money over the entire span of your mortgage, and profitsharing. All the extra benefits add up. • Find the right Mortgage Agent, who will work hard to save you time & money, and know this; Mortgage professionals work for you, and not the banks; therefore, they work in your best interest. From the first consultation to the signing of your mortgage, and in most cases their services are free. A fee is charged only for the most challenging credit solutions, and it’s especially under those circumstances that a mortgage professional can do for you what your bank cannot. Mortgage renewal can be pretty straightforward and easy with a little planning ahead. As with all financial transactions, eligibility is determined by a number of factors, including credit score, income and assets, and debt ratio. Contact me anytime, for more information about your mortgage. Remember I am your financial expert who is passionately accountable for your financial well-being. feature home: from the beginning written by nancy stell photographed by sonya stell
Partake in the transformation of this custom built English Manor Style Home in our first feature “From the Beginning” where we showcase this gorgeous manor tucked away neatly amongst the beautiful backdrop of rural Erin, being torn back to its basics by the proud new owners. The long winding driveway leads you up to this partially moated and custom built home on 13.25 private acres with the Speed River running through the back and surrounded by conservation lands. The original owner, Peter Ketley, built this home in 1989 drawing inspiration from Elsinge Hall, an English Manor built in 1460 in Norfolk, Wellington County, England; hence the location here in Wellington County, Ontario. Distinguishing features of an English Manor often include a steeply pitched gable roof, elaborate masonry chimneys, embellished doorways, groupings
of windows with diamond-patterned or lattice inlays, and decorative halftimbering – an exposed wood framework with the spaces between the timbers filled with masonry or stucco. Customary, casement windows grouped in rows of three or more and framed in either wood or metal and were often divided into six or eight rectangular panesor arranged in a diamond pattern and frequently executed in leaded glass. The entranceway was part of an asymmetrical assembly of architectural elements, some decorative and some meant to provide protection. The thick masonry wall allowed for the door to be recessed creating protection from the harsh elements and oftenrenaissance embellishments included arched openings and luxurious black metal door hardware. Once inside this amazing home, you immediately feel the grandness just from the entrance, as it was customary to be greeted first in the great hall, which gave visitors a preview of just how splendid the other rooms would be. The hand crafted oak woodwork throughout this home and built in canopy princess style bed in the master bedroom reflect the era well.
The design is based on Elsinge Hall, Norfolk, a moated manor house built in 1460
Greeted by a double wooden staircase surrounded by detailed oak wainscoting. Hanging from above you’ll see an elegant chandelier amongst a highly detailed ceiling. 26

Ceiling beams from a farmhouse dated 1823
Gothic arches and hand-carved trefoils
The intricate detail on the ceiling and exquisite and meticulous crown moldings defines a specific style to each room. Originally carpeted to match the colour in the stain glass windows in each room. Peter was also diligent in replicating the grounds, once a reasonably flat farm field; he planted many, many trees and also tried to replicate the moat found at the original home in England. The terrace runs across the whole east front, giving the feel of an English stately home and the pavers are arranged in the typical roped pattern. The home also came with all of the original blueprints and mapping of all
underground electrical work. They also show where two knock out walls are located with the intention of constructing a conservatory and “Grand Solarium with the full circular stone castle look in front of the garage. Something the new owners may consider doing in the future, but not with this present renovation. With the renovations well underway, we are excited to see the finished home which we will hopefully be bringing to you in our upcoming holiday/winter issue of In Our Space. A special thank you to both Gillian Vanderburgh, and her clients that purchased this great home, and arranged for us to showcase this transformation. InOurSpace | Autumn 2015

fall back on good plumbing written by plumb perfect photograph submitted
As you put away those summer shorts and pull out your warm sweaters, make sure your home is prepared for the change of season too. • Turn off inside valves for outside taps. Disconnect and drain garden hoses and put away until spring. If left connected, the remaining water in the hose will freeze, expand and possibly burst the valve. Now turn on the outside tap to drain water and leave it open. If there’s a drain bleeder on your inside valve (small lever or screw cap on side of valve), go back inside and open drain bleeder to completely drain water. Close drain bleeder. (YES, this even applies to non-freeze taps). • Protect pipes in garages, crawl spaces and basements by wrapping with heat tape or foam rubber pipe insulation. When frigid weather hits, turn on both the hot and cold on the faucets of susceptible pipes and let the water gently trickle to prevent frozen pipes. Turn up the thermostat and open cabinet doors to allow heat in. • Test sump pump by pouring water into pit. Check pump for debris and clean out pit. Regularly check and remove debris, leaves and ice from discharge line to prevent flooding. Protect discharge pipe from freezing. Some homes have longer discharge pipes for summer which must be shortened at the coupling for winter to prevent freezing. • Get your hot water heater serviced. Flushing out the tank and changing the anode rod are two ways to increase efficiency and extend the life of your water heater.
• Pump out septic. Make sure baffles have been cleared of debris to prevent backups. Most septic manufacturers recommend having septic systems serviced by a professional twice annually. • If ANY drains are slower than usual or there’s gurgling, get them cleared out. If a drain is even partially clogged due to hair, grease, leaves or roots, the sitting water freezes then expands, creating a blockage which may burst the pipe. • Remove all leaves and debris from your eavestroughs, gutters and downspouts. Water that can’t drain away can come inside through your home’s foundation. Water that is trapped in eavestroughs may build up under shingles then freeze and expand, lifting up the shingles. Upon thawing, the water can find its way down through your ceiling and walls. Many people call their plumber believing it to be a plumbing problem. • Finally, take a minute to show everyone in your home where the main shut off valve is and how to turn it off in case of an emergency. Plumbing emergencies always seem to happen at the worst time, like during Christmas dinner or while you’re on vacation. A little preparation now will save you a lot of heartache (and money) later. If you are not comfortable with performing any of the above, please call a professional.

a twist on an old favourite: pumpkin pie written by nancy stell
Lets mix it up a little this season and make an aweinspiring pie for those guest this Thanksgiving! We are going to bake it in the pumpkin! So that’s right, you will need four small pie-pumpkins for this recipe. (Approximately 5” to 6” pumpkins) Original recipe serves four Ingredients: Dough Pumpkin Pie Filling 4 Pumpkins (suitable for pies)
Prep-Time: 15 Minutes Cook Time: 30-45 Minutes Ready In: 45-60 Minutes

InOurSpace | Autumn 2015
Directions: Step 1: make your dough (use your favourite recipe). Step 2: make sure your pumpkin is as flat as possible on the bottom trimming off a little if needed. Then cut off the top about three quarters of the way up and scrape out all the seeds. Step 3: make your pie filling (using your favourite recipe) and pour it into the pumpkins filling almost to the top, about 1 cup of the filling Step 4: roll out the dough and cut it into four. Trim each piece to just fit over the top of each pumpkin. Flute the edges and cut decorative holes in the top. Step 5: now you are going to bake both the dough tops and pumpkins on separate baking sheets, but at the same time. In a 350-degree pre heated oven, place the tops on a baking sheet and then the pies on another. Bake the tops for 15 minutes, carefully removing them to a flat plate once they are done. Continue cooking the pumpkins for about 30 to 45 minutes, until the filling is set. Step 6: Allow the pies to cool and then top with the dough lids. Serve with whipped cream and enjoy!

how to: carve a pumpkin written by sonya stell
Traditional: What would Halloween be without a carved pumpkin sitting on your porch or in the window looking out at all the trick or treaters? Make this Halloween special by carving your own pumpkin!
7) Cut the lid and remove the filling. Measure a circle with about a 2-inch radius from the stem. Cut around this circle to create the lid. Next, use a large spoon or your hands to pull all of the strands and seeds from the inside of your pumpkin. Scrape it as clean as you can.
1) Visit your local supermarket, farmers’ market or pumpkin patch. Find a location with a healthy selection and a range of sizes so that you can find the perfect pumpkin for your family!
8) Start carving your design. Use the gentle back and forth motion to cut into the pumpkin, and take your time. Discard the cut-out pieces as you remove them. Keep following your pattern until you have carved out the entire design.
2) Select a healthy pumpkin. When you are choosing your pumpkin, try to pick one free of nicks, bruises and cuts. Look for a sturdy stem that doesn’t feel too bendable, and for mostly consistent colour all the way around. 3) Pick the size your need. If you are planning on an elaborate pumpkin carving, you may want to choose a larger pumpkin to fit all that you want to incorporate. Note that a larger pumpkin means a larger mess. If you are just letting the kids draw faces on with a permanent marker, choose a small to medium pumpkin. 4) Time it right. Most pumpkins will be rotten beyond recovery after about a week or two. With this in mind, buy your pumpkin about a week or less before Halloween. 5) Draw your design or stencil your design onto the pumpkin using a permanent marker or dry-erase marker to outline your design on the pumpkin. 6) Find an appropriate knife. For pumpkin carving, use a serrated bread knife, a jab saw, or a purpose-made serrated knife taken from a pumpkin carving set. When carving, draw the knife back and forth as if you are sawing through a tree trunk.
34

9) Place a light source of your choice inside of your pumpkin and watch it glow! Traditional candles and tea lights work well, but safer flashlights and flickering LED lights have become popular modern and safer options. Non-Traditional: Are you tired of pulling all of those stringy, disgusting guts out of a pumpkin? Annoyed with carving and carving and carving? Here’s some fun ideas to keep the kids happy and celebrate in style, without the mess! 1) Use steps 1-4 of the traditional pumpkin carving tips, then select some items from the craft store to make your pumpkin sparkle! Pick up different colours of spray paint, glitter, gems, feathers, etc. that fit with your Halloween theme. 2) Wash your pumpkin with a clean cloth and remove all dirt and grime from the exterior. Be sure to remove as many bumps as you can and get the pumpkin as clean as possible. 3) Spray paint the pumpkin your selected colour (shown here are white spray painted pumpkins). Then coat desired sections with liquid glue and pat on some glitter (shown here with gold glitter), feathers, stones, etc. in a festive design. Now place the pumpkin inside or out and walk away! Wasn’t that so much simpler? Enjoy!

burn baby, burn written by sonya stell
A fireplace gives a room character, drawing you in like a moth to a flame as they dance behind the glass. Whether gas, wood burning or electric, a fireplace brings structure and warmth to your home. But designing a room around one can be a challenge. When planning out your design, keep in mind that you do not want to be too close to the flames, ask yourself if you would like to have the fireplace in the centre of the room, and finally, decided where to put that couch! It wasn’t all that long ago when the most creative thing to do with a fire place was purchase a gas insert, install it into your corner unit and place a mantel above. But now, with the options becoming endless, there are many, many unique ways to feature the flame in your home. Below are some creative tips on how you can integrate a fireplace into your perexisting decor: 1. The Refurbished Retro Fireplace Tear down the old, dated brick or stone work from around your fireplace and say goodbye to those wood mantels! Select a new gas fireplace with a modern flare, framed by a flawless black or stainless steel cover. Choose quartz tiles to surround your new fireplace and if you really want that mantel, select one that follows a modern theme. For example: a simple rectangular white or black mantel that you can place candles or other decorative items along.
36
InOurSpace | Autumn 2015
2. Timelessly Traditional Keep it warm and cozy, but give it a twist! Find oversized tiles that have the look of wood, or wood paneling itself and cover one entire wall. Mount an electric fireplace where it best fits in the room and you will certainly have that log cabin feel... just be sure to hide the cords. 3. Go Big or Go Home If you really want to add some definition to your living room or great room, go with a large-scale fireplace either gas, electric or wood burning, depending on what you can install in your home. Just remember a large fireplace requires large furniture to balance it out. 4. Family Friendly Are you concerned a fireplace will eat up too much room in your space? Not to worry! An L-shaped couch and chairs can make up for the lack of space. Be sure to angle your furniture around the fireplace so that everyone can enjoy the heavenly glow. 5. Eau Du Fireplace Have you ever considered installing a fireplace in your bathroom? The idea might seem a little too out there, but with the “zen spa-like bathrooms currently trending, it makes a bit more sense. Imagine enjoying the sounds and warmth of the fire as you take a bubble bath.
6. Ultra-Modern Elegance Mounting an electric fireplace on a blank wall in your dining room screams nothing but contemporary. See how you can turn your traditional dining room into something that everyone will be saying “Wow!” over. Plus, on those cold winter nights, it will be lovely to enjoy dinner by the fire. Now let’s discuss how to use your fireplace to it’s full potential: as a home’s main spot for entertaining, a living room should be stylish, comfortable and inviting. A feature like a fireplace can help give your living room a warm, welcoming vibe, but it isn’t always easy to know the best way to incorporate it in your design. Depending on the other features in your living room, you can choose from several effective arrangements that allow you to use your fireplace to its full potential. Make fire the focal point: Whether you have a simple brick fireplace or a dramatic floor-to-ceiling stone style, a fireplace has an architectural presence that demands attention, so it only makes sense to use it as the focal point of your living room. Start by arranging your furniture around the fireplace. Typically, you should place your largest seating piece, the sofa, opposite the fireplace and arrange smaller pieces like your love seat and arm chairs on a wall surrounding it. Depending on your living room’s layout, however, you may want to place both your sofa and smaller pieces perpendicular to the fireplace on each side and leave the area opposite it empty for more effective traffic flow. To further call attention to your fireplace, consider painting the wall around it in a shade that contrasts with the rest of the room to really draw the eye.
Share the spotlight: In some cases, you may have other features in your living room that call for attention in addition to your fireplace. A big screen television may compete with your fireplace, or a picture window with a lovely view may steal some of the room’s focus. Instead of choosing a single feature to serve as the room’s focal point, let the fireplace share the spotlight. With a television, you can share focus by mounting it on the wall above the fireplace and arranging the seating area around the two. In a large room where you have a window with a stunning view opposite the fireplace, create two seating areas – one facing the fireplace and the other facing the window – so guests can enjoy one or both features depending on the season. In a smaller space, arrange the furniture in parallel lines between the fireplace and the window so you can actually take in both features when sitting on your couch. Divide the room with flames: If your living room has an open floor plan and shares space with your kitchen or dining room, a fireplace can be an ideal feature for dividing the space. With a direct vent model, you can add a fireplace anywhere in your living room and build a wall around it to effectively separate your living and dining areas. Even better, you can opt for a two-sided fireplace so you’ll be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the fire in both areas of the room. This fall, turn up the heat and enjoy your fireplace by incorporating some of these ultra-modern ideas into your own home. With so many styles, orientations, frames and options on the market today, there is sure to be a fireplace to fit any room in your home.

special spot: discovering in our space written by sonya stell photographs our space publishing
What does “in our space” mean to you? Perhaps this phrase represents a multitude of aspects within your life, your home, your community, your family, your pets, your hobbies and so on. The word “space” meaning “the dimensions of height, depth and width within which all things exist and move” can translate into our entire world or just your own idea of space. The inception of In Our Space magazine was to be a representation and introduction to everything within our space. From our humble beginnings in the Halton Hills region, further expanding into the Headwaters region, and our final piece to the puzzle: the Caledon region. This issue marks our sixth anniversary of publishing In Our Space magazine; our very first issue premiered in the autumn of 2010 and ever since then we have been dedicated to bringing you a resource guide highlighting everything to see and do in our space. This feature, titled our “Special Spot” has been with us since the very first issue, though it has morphed into different ideas throughout these past six years. Beginning with a featured special or interesting location within our regions, including: the Bruce Trail, Williams Mill, and the Shelburne Fiddle Festival. In the past year, we decided to give this space to an organization that is making a difference in the community, for example: the Red Hat Society, and the Family Transition Place. Now, we would like to share with you all of our special spots… those whom have graciously allowed us to place a custom wrought-iron rack in their stores, so that we can continuously bring you every new issue of In Our Space and Live in Balance magazines. Before we begin our tour of those in our space, we would like to extend a big “thank you” to the locations below, for their continued support of our magazines. Let’s begin! “I am BatDog” Costumes For Pooches written by sonya stell
We all know that every dog’s dream is to become the next Batman, Wonder Woman, a hot dog, a princess... okay, maybe it is just our dream to dress our dogs as our favourite characters, food items or animals (other than just a boring dog). But, our canine friends cannot exactly protest against these whims of ours, so it’s best to believe that they too want to dress up as these things on Halloween (or everyday)! Here is our versions of 2015 Best Dog Costumes:
4) A Spider: Using pipe-wire and some fluffy fabric you can create eight spider legs to match your dogs coat, attach them to a dog coat along their backs and you will have a spider-dog! Creepy? Definitely. But still cute.
1) A Chia Pet: if you are lucky to find a store-bought version of this you will have a much simpler job, but all you need is some green fabric, brown fabric and faux moss to create this look. Sew together some brown fabric for your puppies legs to poke through, create a green fabric jack and hotglue the moss all around.
6) Painted Costumes: Another interesting and cute trend is created by using pet-friendly paints on their coats to create your own tiger, panda, rainbow coloured dog, whatever you please. Be sure that you use paint specific to being used on a dogs coat, as regular spray paint is toxic and will harm your pets. Even dog paint can get pretty messy though, so you may want to paint your pet outdoors!
2) Fast Food: What is more entertaining than a dog dressed up as a fast food item? Especially a Dachshund dressed as a hot dog! There are many storebought varieties that you can find to fit this theme. You could turn your pets into a living, breathing Happy Meal if you really wanted to! 3) Three-Headed Dog Monster: Think of the beast from Harry Potter, but instead it is your friendly goof ball with another head on each side of his own. Dress your kids up as the gang from Hogwarts and you will have yourself the best dressed family on the block. Simply take two stuffed animals that look similar to your dog, remove just the heads and stitch them onto a dog coat, concealing the seams. 42
InOurSpace | Autumn 2015
5) Fifty Shades of Grey: Go to the local paint store and pick up as many grey paint swatches as you can find, then stitch them all to a dog coat, give him a grey tie and he is definitely fifty shades of doggy grey.
7) Superheros: Using old children’s Halloween costumes, you can use the cape and vest and restitch it to fit you pooch. Some pet stores may even carry superhero costumes to fit your furry friend, but if not, you can very simply create your own. Send your pup out as Batman or Superman and all the kids will love it! 8) Bride and Groom: Here’s a classic for those with boy and girl dogs! Have them say “I Do” on Halloween with a simple yet adorable bride and groom outfit! You just need a miniature veil and a bow tie, but there are some pretty elaborate variations out there if you want to get creative!
paint your home written by sonya stell
Now that we can enjoy the subtle breeze that flows through our windows, the dreaded humidity is gone and we have run out of things to do... it is time to paint your home! This year brings new colours and new trends to experiment with including light blues and pastel golds that add just the right amount of colour to the room. Choosing your blue: It is harder than one might think to choose the perfect blue for your home, with so many variations, where do you begin? It’s best to start out by figuring out what your neutral colours are going to be. If your furniture is all white or all black, you can choose practically whatever blue you want and it will look beautiful. But, if your furniture includes some grey tones, then you are going to want to choose a blue-grey shade to compliment. You do not need to pick a flat grey, if you look closely, there are some shades of blue that have a grey base.
However, if your home decor has more of a creamy tone to it, you may want to select a blue that has a yellow undertone to compliment. Likewise, with green tones, choose a blue that is considered turquoise or aqua for this colour scheme. Choosing your gold: Now it is time to choose a complimentary gold to the blue paint that you have already selected. It is basically the same principle, choose a gold with either grey tones, yellow tones or green tones dependent on your surrounding colour schemes. Although, with golds there is even more variance compared to blues.... do you want a metallic gold? A deep gold? A pastel gold? A creamy light gold? One tip that will surely help you choose the correct colour is do not go straight to your local home improvement store, choose a colour under the horrific fluorescent lights, buy two gallons and take it home. Your walls will thank you in advance, trust me. You will need to keep in mind, what looks nice in one persons home, may not look nice in your home. Same theory can be applied to the local store, under those lights the colour may look great! But once you bring it home, it looks awful. The best thing to do, is pick up some of those paint chips, bring them home and choose two or three shades that you like, then go back to the store, purchase a sample pot and go home and paint a square of each on your wall. By now, the best shade for you will be screaming your name, so then go back to the store and purchase the two or more gallons that you need. The last thing to remember is that the paint will always end up darker than you think, those little paint strips are not enough to show off the true darkness of the colour once all four wall have been painted. It maybe tempting to choose the darkest shade, but think it through first. InOurSpace | Autumn 2015

let’s get ready to ruuummmble
written by sonya stell
How to: Paint your classic car To completely paint your car yourself, you are looking at about three full days of work, done in three batches, and about 30 hours of labour including masking and fixing any small mistakes. Prep work is the first order of business in painting any vehicle. Before you can even consider getting out the paint, you need to go over the car with a fine tooth comb, finding any small problems that can be corrected. Next, you need to mask everything, which will probably lead to finding more imperfections and having to fix those. Now you can go over everything with a tack cloth and two to three passes of grease and wax remover. It is a good idea to thoroughly clean the area in which you will be painting before dismembering the car and placing smaller panels on the ground. Always remember to use proper protection for yourself when painting as these paints can be toxic and do damage to your respiratory system. Once everything is as clean as possible, you can start spraying on the base coat. It is very important to do at least two complete coats of base. If you happen to get an unfortunate run in the paint, sand this off and re-spray two coats of base to fix it. Next you should spray on the clear coat, which can be very difficult to obtain a nice smooth finish, but give it your best shot. Three coats in total can sometimes be needed to give the outside of the car that shiny flawless look. Of course, if you are not comfortable painting your own vehicle, there are many reputable body shops within the region who can help you through the process. Many places even have electronic systems where you can choose your colour, any pattern, stripes, or details digitally before actually painting the car. After your car has been painted, it is always a good idea to go over the entire vehicle and have any worn chrome refinished, clean up the lights and badges before adding them back on, and replace anything that has been damaged or broken. This will give your classic car a brand-new look and have you ready to start cruising against next summer! Don’t forget that your classic car will continue to require regular maintenance during the fall, and any intensive repairs should be made over the winter so you are ready for next summer! Talk to Ray from R&R Complete Auto & Tire and see what he recommends for your muscle car.
Ray’s update:
This season has been a good but tough season, Ray explains as once the other dragsters get out in front of you it’s hard to catch them. Sitting pretty much in 6th or 7th place for three quarters of the season, Ray went into the last weekend optimistic as he was gaining position going into the last day. Unfortunately after the first round, which Ray won, he broke his motor which put him out for the rest of the day. Final results are still pending so visit www.grandbendmotorplex.ca to check out where Ray ended up. On the Sept 25th - 27th weekend, Ray will be racing with his buddy, Paul Coull in his 1999 Monti Carlo in the Extreme 32 Class. This will be challenging for Ray as they are different size men and it’s not Ray’s usual car, but he’s up for the challenge. 48
