I still remember it like it was yesterday, uttering those words... “How hard could it be to create our own magazine?” Well here we are six and a half years later, about 36 publications behind us, and a journey that has created memories to last a lifetime.
It’s not surprising that with our desire to improve our own diets that we are also seeing a trend in the pet food industry to provide us with more healthy and natural ingredient choices for our pet food. From raw food diets to locally sourced premium ingredient lists, just about anything you want is now found in our pet food stores. But as like anything, buyer be ware ~ be sure it’s not just a big marketing hype that is luring you into purchasing the product.
In our earlier days we had to eat, live and breathe the magazine going around the clock to create ads, interesting editorials and meticulously striving to meet our customers and readers expectations. It was extremely exhausting but also...

autumn home decor trends written by nancy stell
Soft natural colour is trending this fall with texture and shape making a statement. Grass-cloth wall coverings and 3D art create an interesting space, toss in a faux fur throw and your room will come to life. Add a decorative tray with an assortment of items like candles and pinecones to inject colour into a monochromatic room or toss in a few pillows with bold graphic patterns. Chunky knits hit the fall runways this year and have transformed into home décor both for upholstery and accessories.
A curated look showing off your own personal collection of whatever you love is the biggest design trend this fall. There are no rules, just collect and display whatever you love. It can be achieved by simply creating a gallery wall or placing the actual items you’ve collected on a bookshelf, or mix and match your furniture taking three to five pieces and reconfiguring them to create an unusual but electrifying combination. Whether you love books, art or animals, add your personality to any room forming interesting conversation.
A timeless pattern, plaid is once again trending on the runways and what we see on the runway usually ends up in our home décor. Plaid is no exception and is making a big comeback in home décor this fall. You can incorporate it into your look in several different ways, pillows, upholstery, and drapery, also in wallpaper. You can even add these patterns on your table with a striking plaid tablecloth where you can combine patterns by adding strips with your dinnerware.

publishers’ note Have you been wondering where a copy of In Our Space is? Well with the amazing weather we have had, they just flew off our racks and for the first time in a very long time, we actually ran out. The merging of our two magazines, In Our Space and Live In Balance has had a tremendously positive response. It brings to you, our loyal readers, both home décor ideas and positive ways to improve your everyday health. We hope you will enjoy this autumn issue equally as much! With the cooler air and the changing scenery, autumn is always an exciting time of the year. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate the bountiful harvest we are so fortunate to have with friends and family; Halloween is a time to bring out all the creepy crawlers, goblins and goodies and decorate our homes for this fun holiday. And then before you know it we see the first signs of the cold weather ahead as tiny white snowflakes start to fall from the sky and blanket our space. It’s a great time to take a close look at your lifestyle and make changes that can help you live a healthier and happier existence. That’s why this issue of Live In Balance (page 25) is all about back to basics. We are seeing this in just about all aspects of our life, from the food we eat to the way we decorate and set up our homes; even our exercise routines are going back to basics. And people are finding that it is working! Have you heard about Bone Broth? It’s been around for centuries but recently it is gaining popularity as a natural supper food that can help improve your overall health in so many ways. It’s cheap and easy to make, delicious and can be added to all sorts of dishes. It always amazes me how many magnificent homes there are tucked away in the hillsides, and Denise Dilbey has shared with us a beautiful one! On page 20 through 23 get some great decorating and home renovation ideas, or if you are in the market for a new home, you are in luck because this one is available for sale and Denise has all the details on her website: www.ddilbey.com Kim Still of Décor Solutions has also shared some interesting tips in her decorating corner on page 8. With fabulous faux fur throws and pillows you can change up your room in no time at all. And if you are planning to put your home on the market this fall, visit page 46 where Kari Clark shares some tips on how to get the most value for it in her realtor’s column. We have paid a price for this really warm dry summer and that’s a shortage of water. Our local experts, Plumb Perfect remind you on page 42 how to care for your well so it will keep functioning for you. Just because the air is cooler doesn’t mean that you don’t still have to be mindful of your water usage, as we still are not experiencing much rain. And no issue is complete without some great fashion finds. Page 12 showcases a few of the countless finds you will discover when shopping this fall in our space. And finally I hope you will reminisce with me on page 40 as we say goodbye to Sonya as the Creative Director of In Our Space. My co-founder and business partner for the last 6+ years, Sonya is now moving onto bigger and better things. I’m excited for her future and for the future of In Our Space as I too begin a new journey. So the next issue might look a little different from what you are used to, but as they always say “a change is as good as a rest”.

Decorating Tips for the Fall Season
Say “good-bye” to summer by adding a few cozy touches around your home. Fall marks the start of the holiday entertaining season making it a great time to spruce up areas of your home where you will be greeting and entertaining your guests. Create a welcoming grand entrance by adding an entry table at your front foyer with a few decorative accessories. Use mother nature’s changing colour palette to add some playful colour. Try a splash of pumpkin orange, scarlet or hints of burnished gold. Add a pair of occasional chairs or a bench for guests to remove their boots or just sit for a chat. Adding a wreath to your front door is classic and versatile and can be made from almost any material. Mounds of vibrant mums, ornamental grasses, cornstalks and pumpkins can give the front entrance a colourful fall pick-me-up. You can quickly transform the feeling of a room by swapping out cushions in lightweight summer fabrics, like linen and cotton, for lush ones in rich fall shades. Just as falls’ crisp weather calls for layering your wardrobe, the same goes for your home. Add a few coordinating throws over furniture in rooms where your family and guests gather. There are so many luxurious throws to chose from in chenille, cashmere and wool. Faux-fur throws and the matching toss cushions are everywhere this fall. Get yourself ready to cozy up by the fire. If cooler fall weather also means hosting weekend guests, swap out your summer-weight bedding for heavier linens in rich fall shades, like pumpkin, russet or gold. Changing just a few key pieces is an easy way to refresh a bedroom’s look, plus your guests will appreciate staying in such a well-appointed and cozy room. A throw can be draped over the end of the bed for those chilly nights. Celebrate the fall season by adding some casual country touches to your décor items. Adding some natural elements such as pinecones, dried berries, rustic wooden pieces and colourful foliage, twigs or branches stay up-to-date through the winter. After thanksgiving you can always change/swap them for faux-snow and ornaments to give the same decor a new presence. Don’t forget to add some fall colour to your fireplace mantle for a relaxed feel as you sit by the fire. Look for rugs with lots of texture. Shags, nubby wools, southwestpatterned flat weaves and patterned silk rugs will be on floors everywhere this fall. Happy Fall Everyone!

glitz, glam and faux fur written by nancy stell
This season the runway inspired looks incorporated textures! Faux fur and velvets with a throw back to the Renaissance woman. Corsets and bell sleeves create a form fitted look, while we are seeing glam and glitter for a glitzy evening look. One-shoulder dresses and tops with lots of ruffles are also trending this fall as well as one-arm tops, which can be incorporated into a more everyday look. Capelets are also making a comeback, giving you just enough of a cover up on those cooler days. For a more businesslike look, we are seeing the return of pinstripe suiting, both wide and narrow stripes, which make any body shape look slimmer! And extra long sleeves seemed to be the preferred length this season,

although they maybe difficult to deal with for an everyday style. Subtle grey plaid and an injection of bright colours offering an interesting combination are a welcoming contrast to the more traditional darker colours usually seen in our fall collections. Handbags are transforming with extra wide embellished straps that not only look great but make carrying them that much easier. Topped off with a statement choker, something that completely covers your neck will make you standout at any event. Throw on a pair of chunky-sole boots and you will be rock’n the modern day look.
Casual and comfortable is still king and the hoodie is staying on the top of the list. So if you are looking for something warm to snuggle up with, the hoodie is still a great choice. The schoolgirl jumper, a pinafore with a top, makes for easy-peasy dressing this fall.
Patent leather trench coats are not only striking but also functional as they double for a rain coat if need be. Metal detailing is showing up on outer and inner wear adding a splash of detail that creates an edgier look. And if you like the nautical look you are in luck as the Navy Overcoat in both calf and ankle lengths were previewed this fall. And when it’s really cold out you will want to incorporate embellished over-the-top gloves to take the edge off. InOurSpace | Autumn 2016

If you want to save money this fall and create a natural and safe lipstick, here’s an easy recipe?
2-teaspoon beeswax 1-teaspoon cocoa butter 1-teaspoon coconut oil Put all three ingredients in a double boiler over simmering water and heat until everything is melted. Using a glass eyedropper, quickly fill your container just below the top as the mixture will expand, and cool for an hour. To add colour, mix in a 1/8th teaspoon of cocoa powder, cinnamon or beetroot powder‌ adjusting to create the colour you are looking for. InOurSpace | Autumn 2016

when to say “goodbye” to your makup written by sonya stell
Sometimes it can be hard to say “goodbye” especially to some of our favourite cosmetic products that we have spent days, weeks, months or even years searching for. You have looked for the perfect product for your skin type, tone and texture for what seems like your entire life, and then one day you find it... the one; the one that is perfectly designed for you. And now, you have to throw it away? Using expired, old beauty products is just as hazardous as eating expired foods. These products are coming in extremely close contact to your eyes, your nose, your mouth and in direct contact with your skin for sometimes up to ten hours or longer per day. So ask yourself, how long have you had that mascara? Probably too long. Honestly sit down and look over your collection of powders, compacts and tubes of various products; and think... have you been consistently adding to your makeup collection for years while hardly ever throwing anything away? Have you collected every colour of nail polish that you could ever need, while only using a few favourites? Do you buy a new skin care item, while keeping your old one “just in case” you ever need it again? If you are answering “yes” to any or all of these questions, then chances are you are using some old, expired products on your skin everyday that could be ruining it. Just like eating expired food, expired cosmetics doesn’t always make you ill, but it will subtly inflame your skin leading to acne, redness or rashes. Sometimes even severe allergic reactions can be triggered, just from using an old product. All of these products that you have been stock piling for years of your life, could be wreaking havoc on your skin and your health, especially if it comes in a jar. Products contained in jars have you repeatedly touching the product, dipping unwashed fingers into it over and over again. This causes bacteria to grow and live within your products, that you will be applying to your skin or face.
14
InOurSpace | Autumn 2016
Here are some examples of the true lifespan of some of the products we tend to hold onto for quite some time: Two to three months • Mascara • Face Peels and Scrubs • Acne or Blotting Pads • Nail FIle • Shower Loofah Six months to a year • Liquid Eyeliner • Foundation • Concealer • Acne Creams and Washes • Eye Cream • Face Wash • Face Serums One year to one and a half years • Lip Gloss • Cream Eyeshadow • Face Cream (in a jar) • Sunscreen • Bar Soap • Shower Gel • Eyebrow Gel
Two years • Lip and Eye Pencils • Lipstick • Nail Polish • Powder Eyeshadow • Powder Blush • Powder Foundation • Body Lotion (in a jar) • Body Scrubs (in a jar) Three Years • Shampoo and Conditioner • Body Lotion (in a pump bottle) • Perfumes and Hairspray We know that you are probably very attached to some of your items, and the thought of them being expired so soon is horrifying. Well, unfortunately skin care items have a pretty set expiry date; but the good news is... makeup products can have a little wiggle room, if cared for correctly.
Lipsticks or mascara without a top will dry out and become magnets for bacteria, if you lose the lid, lose the product! If you are keeping your makeup in your bathroom, be sure to put it away in a drawer or cabinet away from the humidity of the shower. If you are a nail polish fanatic, storing your bottles in a refrigerator will help them last for years. They need to be cool and dry, to avoid becoming gooey and sticky. Keeping them in the refrigerator is the perfect spot for them to last as long as possible. If your favourite powders are past their expiry, as long as they have been kept clean and in their proper packaging, you can gently wipe them off with a cotton pad or swab soaked in a little bit of 99% alcohol without affecting the formula or shade. Sometimes throwing away all of your makeup before it is completely empty, can feel like throwing away precious gemstones. But in the end, it is all worth it and your skin will thank you.
Keeping everything clean, is the easiest way to keep your products around for as long as possible. The cleaner your brushes, sponges and makeup bags are, the cleaner your products stay. Simple, right? Literally clean out your makeup bag every so often. Empty it out and wipe it down with a disinfectant wipe, then turn it inside out to dry. Wipe off all of the packaging of your products and ensure that they are resealed properly. By tightly shutting every product and storing them at room temperature, you will ensure a clean environment for your makeup.

formal dining rooms written by nancy stell
Just when we all thought that the formal dining room had almost become extinct, this year we are seeing exciting new styles on the walls and floors of these special spaces where hosting small dinner parties demands its own special spot. Graphic wallpaper and herringbone-patterned floors are accentuating these spaces, making fine dining at home a desired and indulging pleasure, with great food, wine and conversation. Fire elements are still making a statement in these rooms and with a less is more philosophy, choose a crisp painted white wall with oversize art forming an amazing focal point, creating an elegant yet inviting space. For a long narrow room, a herringbone patterned wood floor helps to soften its lengthy look. Splurge on a few impact pieces, custom mantels, dazzling chandeliers, flooring or striking wallpaper to design your unique space. Mix chrome, nickel and pewters with gold, black iron and metallic to add charisma to the room. If your style is a more down to earth one, choose a live-edge dining table with acrylic chairs so the view is uninhibited. Paint the walls with dynamic

colours tones, making one a deeper shade creating an accent wall. A contemporary black or chrome fireplace and animal hide carpet will add energy to your room. Dimmable lighting and out of sight integrated sound systems complement these spaces while incorporating digital controls on your smartphone to discreetly control these features. Don’t clutter up your space with knickknacks taking away from striking furniture pieces that you want to be the star of the show. The dining room today is a multipurpose space where you can not only enjoy dinner parties, but also spend the evening playing cards or board games too. Depending on what your dining room will be used for, you can glam them up with elegant crystal chandeliers or go for a more rustic look creating a more casual and relaxed feel. Add a punch of colour with a bold floral centerpiece and translucent window coverings offer privacy while still letting the outside light shine in. Lastly, if room permits, incorporate a corner sitting area where you can enjoy some great alone time with a good book.

his year we are continuing to see a growing desirer to go back to the basics in many aspects of our everyday life. From the food we consume to the activities we take part in, a health conscience person is seeing more and more the benefits of going back to the basics. Our food plays an important part in our everyday well being so this is an area where we see a definite reversal to the way foods used to be. Heavily processed foods are hitting the headlines constantly as we start to recognize the harmful effects they are causing us. A more natural way to preserve our foods is with fermentation. Natural bacteria feed on the sugar and starch in the foods creating lactic acid. This preserves the foods and creates beneficial enzymes like b-vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. This process also creates a host of probiotics while preserving the nutrients of the food itself, making your food more easily digestible. “Flexitarin” is another word we are hearing these days as we realize the potentially harmful effects of consuming too much meat. It is believed that too much meat consumption can cause heart disease, kidney disease, osteoporosis and cancer so many people are now considering themselves ‘flexitarins’, someone who only eats meat occasionally - a semi-vegetarian. Smoothies packed full of more green vegetables are popular choices in the everyday diet. Kale, lettuce, spinach and collard greens offer many health benefits. Paired with bananas, apples, avocado and mango, you create a delicious nutrient rich smoothie that you can enjoy everyday. And unlike fruit and vegetable juices, these green smoothies not only give you vitamins and minerals, but also fiber. ‘Free from’ labeling of foods is popping up everywhere, on our grocery store shelves and in our fast food and restaurants. Free from gluten, dairy, artificial flavours and colours are high in demand and our food producers are listening. The harmful effects of toxic food colourings and preservatives are of concern to many health conscience consumers and the demand for healthier choices continues to grow. One area that is yet to get on board and almost flies under our radar are drugs. Filled with toxic food colourings, the labeling of these chemicals is inadequate to say the very least. Considering these drugs are supposed to be helping us, one must ask the question, why are they filled with these toxic chemicals that not only are harmful over time,
but are also the cause of allergic reactions? Ironic considering these very drugs are supposed to help us. These artificial colourings are cheap so that is why drug companies continue to use them. Personal care products like cosmetics, moisturizers and toothpaste, as well as household cleaning products are also know to contain tartrazine. I believe the companies manufacturing these products need to get on board with creating healthier and more natural products across the board. Nail trends are going back to basics with the return of a classier, high polished look. And hair colours are leaning to a more natural look that accentuates your natural beauty. A no makeup makeup trend where you present a light and fresh look is trending this year too. We are also seeing fashions going back to more earthy colours and natural fabrics. The nursery is going back to basics with pastels colours incorporated with modern furnishings and an overall sophisticated look. We are likewise seeing the benefits of connecting as a family; consequently the formal dining room has regained popularity. No longer reserved for holidays and special occasions, the dining room has adapted with the times to be a functional gathering space for nightly get-togethers. Great conversation with face-to-face contact is also on the rise and easily obtained in the tech free living room. Living rooms filled with inspirational art while free from TV’s, electronic games and other 21st century technology are allowing people to re connect with each other. They are also great for a quiet spot to sit back and unwind after a hectic day. This has also prompted a surge in ‘de-cluttering’ businesses as we are now striving to go back to a cleaner and simpler lifestyle. With an overload of information at our fingertips we find ourselves online and connected 24/7. Spending as little as 5 minutes at a time outdoors and engaging with nature, can help your brain recover from this constant over stimulation. This is why we are seeing an overall focus towards natural earthy tones and softer shades emerging in art, fashion and home designs. Our fitness routines have come full circle too and we are now seeing the return of basic exercise equipment like dumb bells, skip ropes and medicine balls. Simple yet effective, dumb bells help improve coordination, motor skills and your balance, while the tried and true exercises like squats, lunges and push-ups all deliver what they promise; can be done easily, quickly and inexpensively. Your Treasure Awaits.... + Writing | Nancy Stell
After a great summer filled with family activities including the amazing Farmers Market, you won’t want to miss the events this fall in beautiful downtown Georgetown. Remember the market stays open every Saturday morning from 8am until 12:30pm up to and including Saturday, October 15th. Meet our local farmers, enjoy the bounty of our fall harvest, and indulge in something scrumptious from one of the many cafes with your friends and neighbours. Not for the faint at heart, Saturday, October 29th will be a very scary place from 11am to 1pm. Hundreds of children will be swarming the streets dressed as goblins and hooligans enjoying the annual Masquerade on Main and Mill Streets safely collecting delicious

There are lots of great combinations if you want to enjoy this super food without that bitter taste that we associate with Kale. But this one is my favourite! Ingredients: 1 cup unsweetened Almond Milk 1 frozen banana 1 cup chopped kale ½ cup frozen blueberries Dash of cinnamon and raw honey to taste Add all ingredients into your blender and mix together on high speed until smooth. Change up the flavor by adding your favorite fruits like pineapple, peaches, mango or apple. You can also mix in some ground flax seeds or chia seeds to add more nutritional value. bone broth, the next big + Writing | Nancy Stell
thing?
Bone broth has been around for years, even centuries. In fact your grandmother probably made it; a key ingredient in that delicious chicken soup you were served particularly when you were sick. So what is bone broth? It is a broth made from animal bones and is made by boiling the bones from 24 to 48 hours, much longer than your traditional stock. When boiled for this long, the bones break down releasing all the great nutrients and proteins that are known to help heal us naturally.
Inside these bones are nutrients including calcium phosphate, magnesium, silicon and amino acids; all needed to help us rebuild tissues. Modern day manufacturing offers these nutrients in a form of expensive fitness supplements or joint care medicines, but with a rise in going back to basics, making your own bone broth is one of the great ways to get these beneficial nutrients the natural way while saving you a lot of money. Bone broth also supports skin, hair, joint and nails due to the high amount of collagen found in it and has also been known to help with your digestion and boost your immune system. This is why many people today are consuming bone broth. It is used by athletes to speed up recovery from physical exertion, it’s great for people convalescing because it’s easy to swallow and appetizing, and it helps people suffering from irritable bowel or leaky gut syndrome. So how do you make your own bone broth? First you want to make sure you choose the best bones you can find. Since you are extracting the minerals from these bones and drinking them in a concentrated form, organic bones are your best choice. Go to your local butcher and ask for beef bones from the chin, knuckles and neck as they contain lots of bone marrow. Use the assortment to make your broth. food store are starting to carry this product in an already convenient packaged form. Be sure to ready your labels carefully and make sure that there are no additives like MSG or other chemicals and that it still contains gelatin, an ingredient you want and get from your own homemade broth.
Bone broth can be used in all sorts of dishes, from homemade soups and stews, even added to your gravies and sauces. You can also sauté or roast your vegetables with it. Many people today are simply drinking it and by adding a little zing to your broth, you can create all sorts of delicious drinks. From fresh ginger and fresh turmeric to a dash of Celtic sea salt, chili or cinnamon, there are unlimited ways to make a delicious and healthy drink that you can add to your daily diet.
What is
a gift? + Writing | Sweatman Law Firm
In McNamee v McNamee, the Ontario Court of Appeal outlined the constituent elements of a legally valid intervivos gift (a gift made during one’s lifetime). For there to be a gift, there must be a: • Intention to make a gift on the part of the donor, without consideration or expectation of remuneration; • Acceptance of the gift by the donee; and a • Sufficient act of delivery or transfer of property to complete the transaction. Acceptance of the gift can be implied by silence and is only negated by express rejection by the donee. Delivery of the property may be actual (e.g. physically transferring the property); constructive (giving the donee the safe combination which would be impractical to physically hand over); or symbolic (giving the donee the key to your house). When the requirements of a legally valid inter vivos gift are met, a gift cannot be revoked. It is important to ensure the person making the gift has the mental capacity to make the gift. Under the law, in order to be capable of making a gift, a person must be able to: • Understand the nature of the gift; and
• Understand the specific effect of the gift in the circumstances. The size of the gift in relation to the donor’s overall assets is also relevant to determining capacity to gift. The larger the gift in proportion to a person’s assets the greater the capacity required. Depending on the facts surrounding a gift, a claim can be made that the recipient holds the gift in trust for the estate of the person transferring the property and a gift was not the intended consequence. The issue of a valid gift often arises in the context of joint accounts which are sometimes used as a means to avoid probate fees. The joint account holder may argue they are the sole owner of the funds as the surviving joint account holder rather than a trustee of the funds for the benefit of the other account holders estate. It is important to ensure gifts made are properly documented in order to carry out the wishes of the donor. Contact us to discuss the validity of a gift and how to ensure a proper gift is made, including in relation to joint accounts. InOurSpace | Autumn 2016

paper tolling
Also known as three-dimensional decoupage, paper tole first originated in the 18th century and has reemerged today with framed prints being the most popular form. Skillfully creating three-dimensional versions of a flat print and then framed in a deep wall frame to hang as wall art, where it will be admired for many years to come.
Sue Bennett first fell in love with the art in 1989 when she joined a ceramic class where the instructor also taught the art of paper tole. Sue’s very first picture was an apple blossom; today she is creating a variety of works to encapsulate the special occasions for her friends and family. Shown here is the wedding invitation Sue recreated for her daughter as well as a special birthday gift for her husband, his historical car.
With over 25 years of experience, today Sue’s pieces reflect the skills she has developed as an artisan bringing more elaborate and complex pictures to life, from wildlife with intricate fur detailing being highlighted to the challenges of recreating a person, the possibilities are endless. Sue also created this amazing piece that entails a family recipe that will remain in her family and never be forgotten!
Are you looking for a unique gift for that special person? Sue would love to help you create a beautiful keepsake that will remain a treasured memory for many years to come. She can utilize your picture or work with you to choose one that fits the occasion. You are only restricted by your own imagination! As with any piece of art, the cost is determined by the complexity of the piece, however, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised on how affordable her pieces are. InOurSpace | Autumn 2016

Premium ingredients can include ingredient lists that say “natural”, “organic” even “human-grade” but do your homework first to make sure you are actually buying what you think you are. Locally sourcing your foods is prevalent in todays quest for healthier choices and it’s the same when it comes to your pet. Manufactures that outsource overseas are finding the movement towards locally sourced is taking a hold. Preparing products with local ingredients like farm raised protein sources, regional grains, vegetables and fruits are commonly seen in the raw dog food diets. Weight-loss is another contentious issue with our pets as many are suffering the same fate as their owners, carrying too much weight is not healthy for us and it is certainly not healthy for our pets. Many new pet foods have been created offering low fat and reduced carbohydrates to help speak to this problem.

Choosing the best food for your pets needs to be based on your own individual pets health, age, body condition and sensitivities as well as what you can budget for. Be careful not to get caught up in the buzz and hype from smart marketing strategies, but rather do the research and discover the actual benefits offered by each product. Yours pets will thank you in the long run.
Variety is now a common method of feeding our pets with a belief that it will help reduce sensitivities to one specific food type. Many companies offer a selection of proteins so that you can rotate your pet’s food each time you purchase a new bag. Raw food has also taken a hold on the market and continues to grow. You will now find “chemical-free” meats and “unprocessed whole foods” on the ingredient lists. Available in easily packaged frozen portions at many retailers or offered with a home-delivery service, feeding raw is becoming easier and easier every day.

spending a day with artist sharon wadsworth- smith
written by nancy stell
Visiting Sharon’s studio and being surrounded by the beautiful pieces she has created using acrylic paint; the room is filled with vibrant colours and the energy leaps off the canvas’s. Art that truly speaks to me! Being disciplined is certainly an attribute that allows Sharon the ability to master the challenges of being an artist. To the layman, you would think it only involves painting, but behind the scenes work can easily eat up the hours of the day leaving you with next to no time to create your masterpieces. Sharon begins her day at 5:30 am where she checks her emails; art newsletters about upcoming shows, follow ups for high resolution images of her work that is being featured, and on and on. The day I visited, Sharon had about 90 new emails just from the previous day. By 7:30 am it’s time for the daily routine tasks, which include breakfast for both her and her two gorgeous canine buddies and then their morning walk. Back in the studio by 10am, Sharon begins creating. Some pieces she can finish in only a day, where the larger pieces can take her several days. Making sure you have all of your art supplies is another important aspect of the job, as you don’t want to run out in the middle of a piece. The studio is a technology free zone and between 10am and 2pm, Sharon does not engage, as it is disruptive to her creativity and her only focus during this time is on her painting. It’s all too easy to get consumed by computers or technology today and before you know it the whole day is gone. A recent recipient of the Reed Cooper Bursary, Sharon spent last summer studying at Fleming College – Haliburton School of Art & Design. It was hard and challenging work, but inspirational too! This fall Sharon is excited to showcase her new collection “Going Places” celebrating the colour and movement of Island Lake Trail. The show runs from September 30th through to December 24th at the Farmhouse Pottery Gallery and Café, with an opening reception on Oct.1st. The Gallery is located at 307114 Hockley Rd, Mono, ON L0N 1L0. A portion of proceeds from paintings, cards and prints at this show will go to benefit Friends of Island Lake. Sharon has created these pieces using acrylic paints, strong vibrant colours that convey a sense of energy. Her award winning work has been called powerful and intuitive. Working with large brushes and palette knives, she creates pieces that reflect her ongoing journey as an artist exploding with dynamism and strength. Something truly worth viewing, as these replications in print doesn’t nearly reflect the beauty of her actual work. For more information visit Sharon’s website at www.wadsworthsmithart.com 38

how hard can it be?
live
written by sonya stell
I still remember it like it was yesterday, How hard can it really be? You may ask. uttering those words... Well, let me tell you. Very hard.
“How hard could it be to create our own magazine?” Well here we are six and a half years later, about 36 publications behind us, and a journey that has created memories to last a lifetime. In our earlier days we had to eat, live and breathe the magazine going around the clock to create ads, interesting editorials and meticulously striving to meet our customers and readers expectations. It was extremely exhausting but also immensely rewarding, especially when the truck pulled up with our huge load of magazines. And yes it was a huge load of magazines, with each box weighing approximately 30 lbs, receiving just over two tons per issue, we estimate to have lifted over 56 tons of magazines since inception. It’s no wonder my arms and knees hurt! We have often shared some of the funny and challenging stories with a few of you, but in this farewell to Sonya issue we would like to share them with all of you - our loyal readers and advertisers who have made our magazine possible! It wasn’t common knowledge when we first started, but Sonya was only 15 years old. Full of raw talent and unbeaten enthusiasm, she embraced the challenge of creative designer and on her very own, successfully brought to print our first issue and every issue thereafter. And over the years as Sonya graduated high school, ventured off to Toronto attending Ryerson University, then back to Mississauga to attend the University of Toronto and ultimately to Georgetown where she has put her routes down, our magazine production traveled with her; a special spot carved out of her living space where she would create In Our Space. And during the days when Sonya was in university, I must say they were the most challenging as she worked tirelessly to meet the challenges of both her schoolwork and the demands of the magazine. I wasn’t really surprised when she decided to put her schooling on the back burner so we could give our business 100%. And that we did, going full tilt, purchasing Live In Balance and producing two publications, one every six weeks, really keeping us hopping. But life happens to all of us, and with no exception we faced the challenges of aging parents and most recently the untimely loss of my sister, and when trying to juggle all of these tasks at the same time, something has to give. But this time also allowed Sonya, now all grown up, to take a good look at who she has become and what she truly would enjoy doing in the future. It’s often said that being an entrepreneur is a lonely job, and at age 22 with the world as her oyster, Sonya decided to take on the financial world combining all her talents and hard work in a field that truly excites her. So it is with mixed emotions that Sonya and I bring to you her final issue of In Our Space, Home Décor and Living In Balance Magazine. As her mom, I’m excited to see her continue to grow and develop and can’t even find the words to say how very proud I am of her already amazing accomplishments that she has achieved to date. And to our loyal readers and advertisers, thank you for being a part of this exciting chapter in our lives and together, I’m sure you will join me is wishing Sonya all the very best as she embarks on this new venture. As it was once said... “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” Alan Watts. 40
InOurSpace | Autumn 2016
In the spring, just before I finished off my tenth grade of high school, my mom asked: “How hard could it be to create our own magazine?” and I thought: it can’t be that hard. It was at that very moment, that our excitement stirred at the idea of being entrepreneurs in the publishing industry. An industry that just seemed to be on the cusp of taking off in our regions. For my mother, entrepreneurship was not a new concept; inventing and creating her own businesses was a journey she had long ago ventured down. But for me, at the age of only fifteen, entrepreneurship was only something I had heard about from my family and in school. The idea of someone so young owning their own business and working a full-time job while being in school, was foreign to me. But still, the excitement of venturing down this path was enough for me to say “Let’s do it!”
h
w
I must admit, I never really thought past the first issue. That spring we worked tirelessly as a team to create mock-ups and run around introducing the magazine to our potential participants and readers. Then when school was out for the summer, I worked everyday on building customers advertisements, writing editorials, and learning just exactly how to create a magazine. Several textbooks, countless online tutorials, and a few trial and error moments later, our first issue came to be. In that summer, my entire focus was on this one issue. Cultivating various designs for features you may remember: Delicious Delights, Who’s Who, Feature Homes and Special Spots. All the while, thinking that once this issue was done, it would be done. Of course, I had to have known that we would continue on with our business... that all this work couldn’t just be for one issue. But during that time, I was purely focused on the Fall 2010 issue of In Our Space. After what seemed like an eternity, our first issue was off to the printers and arriving back to us in print, shortly after. Seeing our first issue in my hands was astonishing; to think that I had created those 40-pages, with the help of our small team and of course, our participants... together, we had made something that was now going to be read by up to 60,000 people! And then it dawned on me... now we have to do it again, and again, and again... about 36 times over again to be exact. When I graduated high school, the magazine moved with me to Toronto, in my small apartment, where I continued to create each and every issue. Then to Mississauga, where I bought my first home and finally had a proper office of my own. And then, to Georgetown where I have settled down... for now. This business and these two magazines that my mother and I worked so hard to bring to you season after season, month after month, were more than just “work” for us. They were the common-ground that kept my mother and I together while I moved around the province, finding who I truly was. This business has given me opportunities that very few 22-year olds have had the chance to experience, all the while with my mother by my side. As an only-child, my family has always been very important to me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better business partner, who has allowed me to explore, experiment and discover my own passions, while gently guiding me through this chapter in my life. It is with great pride and excitement, that I wish my mother all of the best as she continues on this amazing business. In Our Space has given me an amazing stepping-stone to pursue a career within the financial industry, in which I am so thrilled to be a part of. With our family bond stronger than ever, I’m looking forward to spending our mother-daughter days shopping and exploring. Thank you, Mom, for everything that you have done to help me to launch my career at such a young age. And thank you, to all of our participants and readers who have kept supporting us year after year! This magazine wouldn’t have happened without the continuous encouragement from all of you who love this magazine. Thank you for caring, thank you for all of your kindness, and thank you for reading the words that we have put so much effort behind in each and every issue. I hope that you will continue to support In Our Space, as my mother continues to share how she lives, works and plays in our space!

drought and your well water written by plumb perfect
First we had a difficult spring with ice storms and snowstorms next we were hit with a hot, dry summer and now we are continuing to experience a very dry fall. Sure, at first it was great… endless sunny days, easy to plan outdoor activities, but enough is enough. We need rain! So far, this is the hottest and driest spring/summer/fall since 1959 and if it continues, may become the worst drought on record for our area. This unusually hot, dry weather has already devastated many local crops and has caused numerous wells to run dry. With so little rain this year and snow over the past winter, the aquifer, or underground water supply, is extremely low. The aquifer relies upon surface water to replenish itself so without rain the water level drops. Water is a key to our quality of life. Proper care and maintenance of your water source will protect your water supply and ensure its quality. Any changes in water levels and quality needs to be recognized and addressed for your health and convenience as well as for increasing the lifespan of your well. During extended periods of dry, hot weather, there is a decline in the water level. If you rely on a well for your water, you could quickly run into problems 42
InOurSpace | Autumn 2016
during a drought by using water as you regularly would. If water is pumped at a greater rate than the aquifer is capable of producing, you will run your well dry. Being patient and waiting an hour or so for the water to recover can be inconvenient but will prevent more serious complications. A well run dry may cause the pump to burn out, sediment to get into your home’s equipment or sediment plugging up the area where the water flows into your well. Until we get some good rainfall, please be mindful of your water usage. Although we’re experiencing cooler weather, there still hasn’t been sufficient rain to replenish your well water so it is still a good idea to refrain from watering the lawn, washing multiple loads of laundry and so on to give your well water the time to recover. If you DO run out of water, turn off your pump immediately to prevent pump and pressure tank damage and don’t try to use ANY water for at least an hour so the water level can come back up. After that, use water sparingly to prevent any further loss of water or other problems. If your well doesn’t recover or if you have a pump problem, please call the well experts from Plumb Perfect at 1-888-458-1979.

easy-peasy halloween-ey decor written by nancy stell
It’s that spooky time of the year again when all the ghosts and goblins are out and about and you want to be sure that your home is inviting enough that they will drop by! Here are some great easy outdoor Halloween decorations you can make to dress up your home for this special occasion.
ravens and perch them on leave-stark trees along the pathway the goblins will be traveling. You can also create your own hair-raising wreath. Black flowers, creepy crawling spiders rested on a web made from black yarn, bats and crows all can be added to personalize your own space.
Make a topiary out of pumpkins and display it at your front door. Choose a selection of pumpkins from your local patch ranging from small to medium to large. Three is a good number to work with. Decorate them however you like! A modern twist on the old pumpkin carving régime is to leave your pumpkin in tacked and spray paint it. Any colour you like, including black, makes for a striking contrast to the traditionally carved pumpkin. Then glam it up with glitter, jewels, what ever you have on hand or simply write “Boo!” or “Trick or Treat” on it. Stack the three pumpkins on top of each other; add a wooden dowel to help keep them from falling over, and there you have it, a pumpkin topiary.
And for the true die hard Halloweener, you can give your garage door a makeover by creating a large back lite silhouette; of witches or a flock of birds, perhaps an evil scary face or simply cover the door with tiny black spiders. You can even turn your garage door into a Crypt Wall. The sky is the limit so use your imagination and get to work. (These projects can take a little longer than expected)
The dollar stores are filled with all sorts of exciting and inexpensive Halloween decorations at this time of the year. Pick up some eerie black

Use last year’s costumes and stuff them with straw or newspaper to create some spooky visitors that are lingering all night long. Hang them from your trees or sit them up in a lawn chair at your entranceway. And hopefully with the beautiful warm summer we just had, fall will follow in its footsteps and Halloween will have great weather too!

realtors corner written by kari clark of remax
Is it worth remodeling or staging my home? Everyone asks if it’s worth the time and money to remodel or stage their home. Typically the answer is yes, whether you are selling at this moment or not! Staging will sell your home faster and for less than the amount a price reduction costs. When renovating to stay and making expensive customizations, you should note that you may not recover and gain the exact amount of your investment so stick to your budget. Always have the thought in the back of your head about resale and accommodating the most buyers if that happens. You may love the built-in hot tub in the basement, but the next family may not enjoy it or feel that it adds the $10,000 premium you’ve added to your list price. Remember too, it is now a used hot tub. Fair enough? 1. Basic Home Maintenance & Repair: Do this first! Fix all those little issues you have just lived with over time. They all add up in potential buyer’s minds and could end up costing you thousands off your asking price. A fresh coat of paint and a deep clean goes a long way. If needed, replace or upgrade the energy efficient items in your house like appliances, doors, broken windows, heating system or electrical panel. Buyers will appreciate these types of upgrades and so will their independent home inspector who will be looking objectively at your home’s condition if you decide to sell. 2. Curb Appeal: First impressions are everything. They are typically lower cost and create emotional appeal bringing a higher return on your investment. Create a small sitting area at the front entrance if you can. The positive impact of a freshly edged, lush green lawn is huge. A pop of colourful flowers and gardens around trees draws attention from the road. A bright, inviting front entrance, clear house numbers and, shiny Q-tip clean windows, curtains and blinds are all a must. 3. Neighbourhood Comparison Projects: Remodelling to bring your home up to the level of others in the area with features buyers expect your home to have. If your neighbourhood has mostly 3 bedroom homes with 3 bathrooms and you have a 3 bedroom with 2 bathrooms, finding a way to add another bathroom and shower will more than pay for itself. Ask your realtor for a review on the neighbourhood! 4. Kitchen & Bathroom Updates: Last but certainly not least. Upgrades in your kitchen and bathrooms like sinks, faucets, backsplashes, cabinet hardware, new toilets, vanities or counters can make a million dollar difference on a dime. getting winter-ready with your vehicle this season written by nancy stell
The summer driving season is almost over and it’s been a hot one! This means your vehicle has been working extra hard so you want to be sure it’s running optimally as you head into the cooler weather. At R&R Complete Auto in Georgetown, when you get your oil changed they will automatically complete either a 20 point inspection or a 30 point inspection to ensure that your vehicle is operating properly. Recommended at every 10,000kms, the 30 point inspections covers: • • • • • • •
Changing the lube, oil and filter Checking the transmission A four tire rotation, checking the shocks and the complete brake system and operation Exhaust, battery and terminals Radiator, rad hoses, rad clap and belts Checking the front end, springs, struts and bearings Power steering
And giving you an overall tune-up that includes checking the other filters, wires, hood and door hinges, plus all of the vehicles lights, heater, antifreeze level, wiper blades and fluid, checking to see if there are any cracks or problems with the windshield, and if there are any oil leaks. Remember, preventative maintenance is inexpensive; it’s the breakdowns that are so expensive. Loss work time and downtime impacts you more than you think ~ upwards to thirty times the cost of preventative maintenance. So budgeting for annual maintenance and repairs is far more economical and doesn’t compare to the high costs of waiting and responding to breakdowns. R&R Complete Auto in Georgetown offers qualified technicians that will work with you to create a maintenance schedule that will keep your vehicle reliable and working well.
And don’t forget it is almost time for your snow tires. The rubber on these tires is specifically designed to stay soft in the cold weather, so that means better braking and traction when you are driving. Many insurance companies offer a discount if you put winter tires on your vehicle because of the proven increase in driver control that they offer. So once the temperature drops below 7 degrees, it’s time to switch your tires and R&R Complete Auto has a huge selection to meet your needs.
