publishers’ note Wow! This year has just raced by, and with the warm weather following us right into December, this issue feels more like another autumn edition rather than our holiday and winter one! Perhaps too, that is because it almost feels as though time stood still for us here at Our Space Publishing. This fall, we had to turn our attention to another family member who was sadly diagnosed with melanoma brain cancer this past August. Only a mere year and a half after the passing of our mother, Patricia Pullen; my younger sister and Sonya’s Aunt, Diane Pullen, courageously fought a tough battle. She remained in her home caring for herself and her two beautiful dogs, until she unfortunately lost her battle with cancer at the end of October 2015. In honour of Diane, we have dedicated this issue to her and are so excited to share with you some of the amazing works of art she created throughout her lifetime. As a passionate artist, whom loved everything about Ontario, she spent countless hours photographing various animals at the Toronto Zoo to create her first collection, which she proudly showcased at the 2014 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. We invite you to turn to page twenty-six, to enjoy our tribute to Diane and take in the beauty of the artwork she created. Forever in our hearts, she will truly be missed. What else have we been up to? Well, Sonya has continued to use her distinctive interior design skills to complete a mini-renovation in her powder room. We have shared with you the finished look, to give you some awe-inspiring ideas on how to make your little two-piece restroom a statement. She has also shared some great tips on decorating your entire home for the holidays and winter season, including how to get your table ready for all of that entertaining you will, no doubt, be doing this season.

We have also shared a couple of tasty recipes in this issue, that you can use this holiday season or for some extra-special everyday meals. Most of us enjoy delicious cranberry sauce with our turkey dinners, so try your hat at making the delicious and simple homemade cranberry sauce recipe we have included. It’s great for dressing up those everyday sandwiches too! Also, don’t miss out on this one... Black Birch Restaurant taught us how brussels sprouts actually grow, do you know? These little green power foods can be a lot more exciting when you add bacon and chestnuts along with them, so don’t hesitate to try this delicious recipe this winter.

After my sisters passing, we have taken her two loving dogs into our homes and have blended them with our own; so this issue, we thought we should share some tips on how to add a rescue animal into your home with ease. A challenge that not everyone is up for, nor can be taken lightly, but if successful, can be an excellent experience for both yourself and your new furry friend.

Our two columnists are back again this issue! Sharing their expert advice on both home décor and real estate. Thank you again to Kim Still of Décor Solutions and the team at Gillian V&Co. for providing our readers with this useful information. These regions are filled with striking homes, and this issue we have not one, but three very different properties to show you! In our autumn issue, we first featured the “before” photographs of a gorgeous custom-built English manor-style home, titled “From the Beginning”. Well the renovations are well under way and we are happy to bring you some “after” shots, with the amazing progress the new homeowners have been making. As well, we have a terrific Victorian home and log home for you to take inspiration from when planning your family haven. Whether you are planning a renovation or looking to make a move, we hope that these beautiful homes will help to inspire you. Often we get caught up in our own busy lives and forget that there are members in our society much less fortunate than us. Links2Care is a local program that helps to support these less fortunate members of our society and Alana and Trevor of Georgetown Chevrolet, Buick, GMC have chosen to support the Youth Services aspect of this amazing association and have shared some of the great fundraisers they are doing to help raise money for this very vulnerable and important group in our community. Now, it is time to say “farewell” to 2015 and welcome in 2016 with all that it has to offer. Our Space Publishing would like to wish you and your families a very happy holiday season, along with a healthy and prosperous New Year!

romantic, historical, victorian written by nancy stell and sonya stell photographed by sonya stell

The appeal of a Victorian home often encapsulates the fantasy of the history within its walls; the romantic and architectural interest that these houses have to offer are parallel to none. Choosing this lifestyle can bring you an experience like no other, but finding one of these treasures can prove to be a difficult task. Luckily, we have found one of these “diamonds in the rough” located on ten acres in the picturesque town of Erin. This grand all-brick Victorian home offers a small barn: perfect for a miniature hobby-farm, apple trees, hiking trails, and a spring-fed swimming pond with a sandy beach and outdoor shower. Creating the perfect weekend retreat or an everyday lifestyle unique to country living. Enjoy the huge wrap-around, covered porch on beautiful evenings, as you gaze out a the clear, night sky and watch as the stars twinkle and shine luminously above you. Taking a step inside of this striking home, the original large-trim baseboards and high, ornate ceilings are simply eyecatching. With decorative details adorning the ceilings and a majestic staircase leading you to the upper level. Flowing throughout the home are solid wood floors that extenuate the historic feel of the home. At the top of that magical staircase, you will find four large bedrooms and a spa-like main bath amongst picturesque windows, allowing you to enjoy the incredible views. Only minutes to Georgetown, this perfect country property offers the convenience of being just a short drive into town while savouring the beautiful country side On the weekends enjoy relaxing in the large and spacious main bath, that incorporates the old with the new. A gorgeous claw-foot tub, elegant to look at, contoured for soaking in, and located directly in front of the large window providing you with a view to die for. Or if you are in a hurry, the corner glass walk-in shower offers the modern niceties we all long for, especially on those busy mornings when we are getting ready to head out the door.

To fully embellish the Victorian period, here are a few simple ideas on how you can restore this homes beauty while respecting its heritage: Keeping Up with the Kitchen: A practical wide and deep, white, classic “butler sink” lends a country-like air to any kitchen, place the sink underneath a window to ensure there is plenty of light. Contrast this bright white sink with a darker paint on the walls, and finish the cabinets with a complimentary darker shade. Say “Goodbye” to Boring Doors: A door is what leads you into a room, welcoming you in and the last thing you see on your way out. By the end of the 1800s, stained-glass front doors had become a very popular feature. Beautifully letting the light in, just enough to fill your home with brightness, but still faded enough for your privacy. Have an authentic or period-reproduction piece created to enhance the hallway with a spectacular amount of character. Create a Focal Point: Fireplaces are an amazing natural focal point in any room of the house, but if you are going to add one into a Victorian home, choose a period-looking fireplace. For example: a cast-iron fireplace surrounded with marble, stone or wood, will give off that perfect amount of cozy warmth, while blending into the homes decor perfectly. These properties are a rarity, so if you are interesting in the romantic lifestyle of a Victorian home, contact Irena Lechnowsky B.Sc., Sales Representative at McEnery Real Easte or visit www.mceneryrealestate.com for more information on this truly amazing property.

Victorian Housing Facts:

A Victorian home generally means any house built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). During the Industrial Revolution successive housing booms resulted in the building of many millions of Victorian houses, which are now a defining feature of most British towns and cities. With progression in many areas, housing not excluded, the following are some of the main features developed and introduced in Victorian housing: access to hot and cold water, at the beginning of this era only the very wealthy had access to running water and boilers, however, they were quite common by the end of the Victorian era.

Lights were also introduced within this era; gas powered lighting developed rapidly during Victorian times and was a common feature in most homes. Most houses had cellars built-in to store coal ready to make fires in the winter, a previously over-looked feature of a home. Regulations were brought in to focus on cleanliness and access to basic sanitation. These included: proper drainage and waste disposal facilities such as an ashpit or dustbin. Most people had toilet facilities, either as a privy (an outdoor hut with a hole in it), or for the more wealthy, an inside water closet. Sash windows were also introduced, these functioned by sliding the bottom half of the window upwards. Houses were standardly built out of bricks or local stone with slated roofs, no matter where the housing was built, materials used were generally the same thanks to the development of the railways allowing transportation of the materials. The wealthy people fared very well during Victorian times with spacious homes containing underground sewers to dispose of waste, running water in the kitchens, toilets that flushed, gas lighting later upgraded to electric lights as they became more available, and warm well-decorated rooms.

top six winter plumbing tips written by plumb perfect

When the temperature drops, water freezes and expands which can cause serious problems. Damage from burst pipes can cost thousands of dollars due to flooding, water damage and repairs. Depending on your insurance policy, some of that may not even be covered. Listed are a few things to prevent costly problems from happening, especially during holidays or while on vacation. 1. Turn Off Outside Taps First, it is critical to remove, drain and store your garden hose for winter. Next, turn off the inside valves for each outside tap, or hosebib. Go back outside, turn on taps to remove any water and leave open to prevent pressure buildup. This includes non-freeze hosebibs. You may also wrap the hosebib with insulation and cover it with plastic to protect from freezing rain. 2. Protect Exposed Pipes Unfortunately, some piping is located in or next to unheated areas such as in the garage, porch, crawl space or basement. Protect these pipes by wrapping them in heat tape and/or foam rubber pipe insulation. Close your garage door after using to prevent frigid wind from entering.

4. Check Pumps and Septic Check your sump and sewage pumps and pits for debris and clean out pits. Regularly remove any leaves or ice outside that could block the sump pump discharge pipe. Protect your discharge pipe from freezing and/or use a shorter discharge pipe in winter. If on a septic, get it pumped out. Check the baffle regularly and clear any debris. If you have a special aeration-type system, get your septic serviced to prevent back-ups. 5. Clear Eavestroughs Remove debris from your eavestroughs and downspouts. Water that can’t drain away pools around your home’s foundation and eventually finds a way in. Water trapped in eavestroughs builds up under shingles, freezes, expands and lifts up the shingles. Once it thaws, the melting water can find its way down through your ceiling and walls causing damage. Many people call their plumber believing it to be a plumbing problem.

During days with Arctic-like temperatures, turn on both the hot and cold faucets of susceptible pipes and let the water gently trickle to prevent pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors to allow heat in. Place portable heaters nearby. And turn up the thermostat – a few extra dollars spent could save thousands in damages should the pipes freeze and burst.

6. Prevent Drain Problems Get any slow or gurgling drains cleared out right away to prevent backups which have a tendency to happen during holidays. If you use a garburator, don’t put down any fat, bones, pasta, rice or stringy vegetables which will clog your drains.

3. Stop Water Damage Make sure everyone, including your babysitter, knows where the main shut off valve is and how to turn it off in case of an emergency. The quicker you shut off the water, the less water damage you’ll have in your home.

Remember, if you need any help with any of the above, please call a professional who specializes in these services and can help you get the job done right.

put away the holiday decor written by sonya stell

Sometimes we can go a little overboard with holiday decor; Christmas trees in every room, wreathes on all the doors, bells, sparkles, snow flakes, holiday-scented candles, miniature trees, reindeer, Santa’s sleigh on the roof... sound familiar? It is always lovely to enjoy your extreme love for the holidays throughout the month of December, but then that dreaded December 26th comes along and somehow, your holiday decor doesn’t seem so jolly any longer.

Flameless White Candles Technically, these candles are appropriate for anytime of the year, but they can be especially cozy throughout the winter months. Choose a selection of sizes, heights and styles, to create a flameless collage on your mantel or tables throughout your home. The best part: you can keep them “burning” as long as you want and not have to worry about children or pets accidentally burning themselves.

Here are some tips on how to decorate your home for the holiday/winter season without screaming Christmas at the top of your lungs:

Wintery, not Christmas Scents If you love burning scented candles, enjoy reed diffusers, plug-in air fresheners or any other method of making your home smell amazing, you will know by now that everyone jumps on the holiday scented bandwagon. The best way to keep your home smelling delicious all winter long, is choosing scents that make you think of winter, not the holidays. You can keep those ones to share with friends and family during the actual holidays, but put them away in January.

White Lights Instead of going for the red and green or multi-coloured “Christmas lights” try decorating the exterior and interior of your home with white and gold lights. This will give off a beautiful glow and still keep your home festive, without expiring on the 26th. You will be able to enjoy these lights much longer and so will your neighbours. Golden Leaves Adorning your home with all of the ornaments you can find is one way to show your holiday pride, but if you are looking for something that can take you all the way through winter, until the last snowflake melts... try adding some golden leave with your families names, inspirational words or cute sayings written on them. These types of decorations can be found at your local arts and crafts store, or you can create them yourself with faux leaves. Pine Cone Garlands Collect as many pine cones as you can while they are still on the ground, then tie them together with some plain brown rope and there you have it... a wintery, beautiful garland to decorate your tree, your mantel or your staircase with. Simple, right?

10

InOurSpace | Winter 2015

Don’t Eat The Apples! Another beautiful wintery decor is right in your refrigerator: apples! Think about it... they come in various colours, including red, green and gold. A centre-piece display of apples will give off a subtle reminder of the holiday season, but still be appropriate for everyday. And if you get hungry, you’ll always have a snack near by! Greenery and Pine Needles The last touch that can be added throughout your home, is the use of greenery and pine needles. Faux or real, you can bring the outside inside and give a subtle nod to Christmas time, without going completely off the deep end. Find a plain green wreathe and hang it above your fireplace, spruce up the rest of your mantel with some pine needles and dried leaves, and enjoy it for the rest of the season.

Giving Your Fireplace A Face-Lift

There are some simple updates you can do to transform that old tired looking fireplace into something that is a little more updated and a place you look forward to cozying up to after a long day. Your fireplace can be dated brick, boring drywall or maybe the inexpensive tile and wood surround that your builder added and charge way too much. The following ideas can take your fireplace from ordinary to extraordinary. A coat of paint can easily do the trick for you! Just make sure you prime the area first and use the appropriate paint to make sure you get good coverage. A white fireplace surround can cover up the old brick and give it a more modern, brighter appearance. Architectural interest can be obtained by adding some wood moldings and painting them out to match also. Perhaps simply adding a new mantle will give you a fresh look. Think about the dramatic transformation that thin stone veneer can have on your existing fireplace. What a change it makes to the fireplace in the photo to the right. If you have a fireplace that extends up to the second floor but is only painted from fireplace up to the ceiling, you could add stone all the way up to the top. Now you have a beautiful focal point in your great room! A fireplace can sometimes seem small on a large wall. By building cabinetry around the fireplace can give extra storage space, which is always a welcomed idea, while giving your room visual architectural interest and balance. The pictures are just a few examples of what you can do to transform that boring old fireplace. Which idea appeals to you that would work in your space?

country chic paint information provided by country chic and georgetown living lighting

Country Chic Paint is a beautiful furniture paint specifically designed for DIYers with a love for refinishing furniture and home decor. This fabulous paint is eco-friendly and contains no harmful solvents. Applying Country Chic paint couldn’t be easier - whether you want to make a new piece look old or transform an old look with new colour and style, you will love the beautiful smooth matte finish and all the delicious colour choices. If you want to distress your piece, then this is the best paint for the job. You will love how simple it is to create a shabby chic look with Country Chic Paint. The best part? There’s very little prep work with Country Chic paint, only fabulous results! Find us at Georgetown Living Lighting! Whether you use Country Chic Paint to transform your home with beautiful painted furniture, or create pieces to sell, we are sure that you will LOVE our products. Here is how you can create your next project using Country Chic Paint: Step 1) Prepare your project Most of the time you don’t have to do a lot of prep before you start painting, but a little prep work can help you get great results every time. When your piece is made out of unfinished or matte finished wood, all you need to do is make sure it is clean and dust free. Always clean off any mildew and loose or scaling paint first. If your piece has a glossy surface, we recommend sanding it lightly with 120 grit sandpaper. It’s important to keep in mind that certain surfaces, such as mahogany, pine and stained surfaces, may bleed and should be primed with a stain blocking primer first (such as Shellac). You can test this by trying the paint on a small section first. Step 2) Getting the paint and brushes ready Before opening your paint can, turn it upside down and shake it well; the pigments sink to the bottom, so it’s important that you mix them in with the rest of the paint. Open up the can and stir well for about 1-2 minutes.

If you’re sticking with just one colour, apply the second coat just like you did the first and allow your piece to dry. No sanding is needed between coats. Step 5) Creating the distressed look If you do want to distress your piece and create that aged look, then let the second paint coat dry for about 1-2 hours (or until it’s fully dry to the touch) before you distress it. We recommend you use a wet, lint-free cloth as this is the easiest way to get a beautiful shabby chic look. Just soak your cloth in water and start rubbing the paint off gently. Don’t forget to take away the paint that you rubbed off, as it may be covering up the distressed area. Start gently and experiment with how much pressure to apply. Have fun and play around while you give your piece a truly personal touch! You can also distress using fine-grit sandpaper, or even a kitchen scrubby. In the end it is a personal choice, so just try different techniques until you find the one you like best! The longer you wait to distress your piece, the trickier it will be as the paint will cure over time. Although our paint has a 30 day total curing time, after a day it is quite hard so we recommend putting the top coat on and distressing within about an hour. Step 6) Waxing - adding that final touch Once your project had dried for 24 to 48 hours, we recommend adding one of our waxes to really take it up a notch. By waxing your piece, it’ll last longer and have a more professional finish. Experiment with antiquing wax to create a fabulous worn/antique look. Our gold wax will give your piece a gorgeous, luxurious finish, we’re sure you’re going to love that wax too! Use a wax brush and apply a light coat of wax to the entire piece. Follow immediately with polishing using a clean lint-free cloth to get rid of any excess wax. When you are done, your piece will feel silky smooth and you will enjoy it for years to come! Do make sure to re-apply the wax every 6-12 months for the best protection of your piece.

We recommend using the Country Chic brushes, however, another high quality brush with synthetic bristles would also work. Our paint doesn’t contain solvents; it is water-based. Therefore, natural bristle brushes are not recommended to use because they absorb water, which causes the bristles to flare or become too soft to paint effectively. Step 3) Now you’re ready to paint! Dip in your paint brush so that you’re covering half way up the bristles. Apply a generous coat of paint to the surface. Make sure you are not being too stingy while avoiding getting a lot of drips; play a little until you find the perfect happy medium. Allow your first coat to dry for at least 2 hours. For best results, we recommend drying the piece overnight. Step 4) Applying the second coat Once the first coat has properly dried, it’s time to put on a second coat if you need it. This is where the real fun begins. If you want to create that time-worn, shabby chic look, then you may want to use a different colour as your top coat. Get creative and experiment with different colour combinations! 16

the transformation written by nancy stell

We first showed you the ‘before’ in our fall issue and now we would like to show you the ‘after’ as the transformation of this custom built English Manor Style Home takes shape. As with any renovation, nothing ever goes 100% as planned, so with a few delays incurred, here are the highlights of the rooms that were completed as we went to print with this Holiday/Winters Issue… “The Drawing Room” On the lower level, the carpet in the drawing room (or more commonly referred to these days as the family room) was replaced with birch engineered hardwood, as it works best in the basement plus it would fit right under the 8” oak trim which is so hard to find these days. With the original damask wallpaper, custom oak built in fireplace and mantel and the impressive stain glass windows all still in place, this beautiful room is great for entertaining or just curling up by the crackling fireplace with a great magazine. The bedrooms were also completed, with the “Purple Room”, designed specifically with the owner’s sister in mind, and who lives with Autism, and loves the colour purple, often staying over. The same-engineered birch hardwood was laid, the original wallpaper and stain glass windows were untouched, and the furnishings are from the owners great grandparents, a perfect match for this elegant room. “The Red Room” Named after the replicated names of Elsing Hall, is the guest room. Being on the main level, the flooring is solid oak hardwood throughout and matches extremely well with the engineered hardwood flooring that was laid in the lower level. Furnished with imperial pieces that further enrich the era of this home, the tapestry was handmade from Italy and took several months to make by hand. The headboard is solid wood with a cast iron inlay and the chandelier is from Vintage Lighting right here on highway 10.

“The Abbots Chamber” Otherwise known as the Master Bedroom was kept in tack with only plans to change the windows in order to get the full view of the front landscape. Solid oak walls and floors with ceiling beams that came from a farmhouse from the 1800’s, all add to the character and charm this room has to offer. The Ladies and Gentleman chairs belonged to the owner’s grandparents where they sat and had their evening cocktail for over 65 years of marriage. As the ‘manor’ takes shape, ongoing renovations include an impressive Barzotti kitchen, dining and combination great room where a corner fireplace has been added. Watch for this feature in our upcoming spring issue. A special thank you again to Gillian Vanderburgh and her clients who have allowed us to be apart of this amazing journey with them.

adopt, don’t shop written by sonya stell

So you have decided to bring home a new furry friend, have you? Perhaps this is your first pet, or maybe you already have a few at home. Your first thought is to find a reputable breeder and get on the wait list for their next litter of puppies or kittens. Before you start researching local breeders, remember that there are many dogs and cats that do not have a home to call their own. Rescue organizations and humane societies house thousands of dogs and cats that have been abandoned, caught as a stray, or given up because their previous owners could no longer care for them. So before you head off to shop for your new pet, consider adopting one of these amazing furry little friends who are waiting for their forever home. Adopting a dog or cat should not be taken lightly, though, as you do not know their past. Here are some tips and things to keep in mind before you consider adopting your next pet: 1) It is going to take some time. When you bring your new friend home, do not assume that they are going to blend in and become the new family pet in an instant. Your adpoted dog or cat has most likely been moved around quite a bit from homes, to shelters, to foster homes. Give your pet some time to adjust to their surroundings and be mindful of the fact that they are nervous and “out of sorts”. 2) Blending a mature dog, with another dog. Bringing in a new puppy is always exciting for both yourself and your other dog(s), but bringing in another mature dog can be a recipe for disaster if not done correctly. It is ideal to muzzle both dogs and meet on neutral ground, like a park or the front yard. This way the dogs can determine who will be dominate and sort out their pack-order without getting into a costly dog fight. Just because your previous dog “lived there first” does not mean, that he/she will be the dominate member of the pack, it depends on each dogs personality and strength. So let them figure it out. 3) Ensure they are healthy. Whenever you introduce a new pet to your family, it is important to ensure they are healthy and have been properly vaccinated. The shelter, humane society or rescue organization should be able to give you all of this information. However, go with your gut, if the animal looks sick, ask them to schedule a vet checkup before you bring he/she home with you. You do not want to risk having other pets in the household become sick, or loose your new pet shortly after getting them. 4) Adopting may not be for you. We must accept the fact that adopting a pet is just not for everybody. If you are looking for a show-quality animal, your chances of finding one in a shelter are slim. If your existing cat or dog is a tough temperament, they will most likely blend best with a kitten or puppy, versus a mature animal. If you have a busy schedule and cannot dedicate the time to properly introduce and work with your new pet (especially a dog), adopting may not be the right choice for you. Plus, all those little puppies and kittens from breeders need homes too.

remembering diane

...in memory of diane pullen 1960-2015 written by nancy stell

In our premier issue of In Our Space in the fall of 2010, we featured my sister, Diane Pullen in the story “Capturing Her Passion on Canvas”. I would have never thought only five short years later I would be saying good-bye to her forever. After a brief battle with cancer, Diane passed away this October at the very young age of only 55. It is never easy to say good-bye to a family member, but I do consider myself fortunate to have these amazing images that Diane spent countless hours capturing in her more recent years when her love of photography emerged from her artistic veins. As children, Diane was always the artist in the family and expressed her talents often through drawings, even a huge mural she drew on our rec room wall that remained for many years. But like most artists, she was her own worst critic. A perfectionist by nature, Diane was always just not quite happy with many of the pictures that I thought were amazing. When technology evolved to the point where photography was a more achievable home hobby, Diane found her niche and began to capture the amazing beauty we often take for granite in this beautiful Province of Ontario. She loved the outdoors, nature and the animals and her work reflects this passion. She first started at the Toronto Zoo, where she spent countless hours and took thousands of images in search for just the right shot of many of the magnificent animals that call the zoo their home. The majestic Tiger was one of her most popular shots and a favorite whenever she showcased her work. Diane’s adventures’ often took her to Algonquin Park where she would load up her canoe, saddle pack her dogs, water proof her supplies, including her camera of course, and head off on her own for a few days to soak up the beauty and tranquility of nature in its rawest form. Diane also loved horses and often talked about the day she could actually have her own. From horseback riding lessons as a young girl where she would always climb right back on no matter how hard she fell, she was drawn to these beautiful creatures and enjoyed capturing the joy on the faces of the many young riders at the Erin Fall Fair. Although her artistic endeavors were cut short, we are all very proud that Diane’s work earned her a spot in the prestigious Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in 2014 and with her Wild Animal Collection of canvases and framed paper prints in hand; she showcased her work in Toronto’s largest and longest running outdoor art fair that first began in 1961 and today attracts an audience of over 100,000 people annually. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words and Diane will forever speak to us through these amazing images she captured and that we will continue to enjoy for many years to come. We hope to that you, our valued customers and loyal readers will also share the enjoyment these images bring to us in this special tribute “Remembering Diane” Let your spirit take flight! Love, Nancy

When I think of my Aunt Diane, her artwork is definitely one of the largest memories I have of her to carry forward with me, but I believe that it speaks for itself. So instead of going over all of the amazing pieces that she created, I have decided to share with you how she impacted my life, my career and my creativity. My mother comes from a family of four, though it was only my mother and my Aunt Diane that shared a great love of animals. Growing up, Diane always had at least two dogs, one was almost always a Doberman. She used to have her dogs pull me around on a dog sled through her backyard. My mother and father also had a Doberman when I was a young child, still to this day he is one of the best dogs I have ever had. I grew up appreciating the breed and knowing their kind and loving nature. When I was a little bit older, Diane purchased a beautiful, extremely large black and tan German Shepherd. He was one of the most striking dogs I had ever seen. In later years, Diane continued to have Doberman’s and German Shepherd’s; inspiring my mother, father and I to adopt a rescue German Shepherd in 2011, and for myself to adopt my own German Shepherd in 2014. In 2010, my mother and I began our plans for “In Our Space” magazine, just as Diane had begun her wildlife collection of images taken at the Toronto Zoo. She offered me her advice on using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator from her own experiences. I fondly remember her praise as my own skills developed and blossomed throughout these past six years. Often, after spending countless hours redesigning the template of the magazine and website, she would send us kind emails on how much she truly liked the improvements. In 2011, we participated in the Halton Hills Home Show in the Marketplace Mall. Diane came along with her artwork and proudly displayed it with the feature we did in our magazine. I remember how her beautiful canvas print of the tiger, drew in so many amazed people who ooh’d and aww’d over her work. In 2012, I was off to university and Diane shared how happy she was that I was able to experience the excitement of art/design school, as she never was able to. Throughout the next few years, I would talk on the phone with Diane and she would offer her tips and suggestions, along with various photography workshops that she recommended. It was at one of my birthday celebrations when she told us about a growth that she had on her leg, though the doctors weren’t concerned at the time. Unfortunately, they proved wrong, as it was in fact melanoma cancer. She thought she had won the battle after she was cleared that winter, but it was only eight short months later that we got the news. Diane had been camping with her dogs, and on the way home was found to be driving erratically, she was then taken to the hospital. My mother and I drove up to North Bay to pick her and her dogs up, the police officers and volunteers at the humane society were kind enough to meet us after hours, so that we could take her dogs home with us. That meant the world to Diane, and even though she had been given this awful news, she thanked these people immensely for all that they had done. The next few months proved difficult, though I looked after her two dogs, Raven and Jewels until she could return home on her own. I helped her identify some issues they were having with their diet and socialized the dogs with many new faces. The once nervous Jewels was becoming a social butterfly while on walks, and Raven was very keen to have some new friends. Once Diane returned home, she was so pleased with how far her dogs had come in such a short amount of time; and we established something new that we had in common: our bond with animals. I truly hope that through her artwork and her two dogs, that Diane will live on in our hearts. She fought a brave battle, and though it may have been short, she was able to stay at home with her dogs for as long as she could. I will always cherish these memories I have with Diane, and will never forget my eccentric Aunt who loved her dogs more than anything in this world. InOurSpace | Winter 2015

Purchasing A Diamond in the Rough For some, purchasing a ‘diamond in the rough’ is daunting. For others, it is an adventure. Having the ability to see the potential of a house that is run-down can make for a satisfying project and worthy investment. Whether you are looking to create your ‘forever home’ or are undertaking a resale opportunity there are many things to consider. Location. Location. Location.

N IO

CON

ST

Physical improvements can be made to any home, but you cannot change its geographical location. A “fixer-upper” in an area surrounded by homes of greater value gives insight into its potential future market value.

RUCT

When looking to renovate a home for resale be mindful not to make improvements beyond what the market can sustain. Have your Realtor research properties in the area that have improvements similar to those that you envision. Structural Integrity. Make sure you have a clear concept of what you want to accomplish. Seeking professional advice from contractors, architects and/or designers is very important. They will help evaluate the structural integrity of the home and determine if the changes you want to make can materialize.

Discovering the Past brings alive the Future

Realistic quotes and timelines that include a contingency will help keep your budget in line. Cost overruns are common, and sometimes doing the renovations in stages is more beneficial. Know What you are Buying. A home that is visibly neglected on the outside very likely has inner mechanical systems that have not been properly maintained. This can prove costly. Have an evaluation done by a qualified, home inspector who can provide insight into the life expectancy of the current operating systems. This is valuable information. Select an inspector familiar with the type of home you are considering. For example, a Century home or Log home requires a certain range of expertise. Ask your Realtor to recommend a list of suitable professionals and provide references for them as well.

Renovations can be Stressful. Ask yourself the question, “Are you prepared to live in a construction site?” If so, decide how to make that work for you and your family. Having open dialogue and setting realistic timelines and budgets will help ensure a smoother process. Let the transformation begin!

contour vs. strobing written by sonya stell

Within the past decade there has been a never-ending wave of various makeup trends, from bright eye shadows to smokey eyes, thin over-plucked brows to full, thick and dark brows, this list goes on and on. Using various shades of bronzers to contour your face into appearing much slimmer, sculpted and defined has been one of those trends that had yet to be replaced. That is until “strobing” became the game-changing way to sculpt your face. You may be wondering what the difference is, well strobing is essentially just highlighting your best facial features, while contouring is darkening the places where shadows naturally fall onto your skin to appear more structured. Here is a step-by-step on how to contour versus how to strobe: Contouring What will you need? Foundation, concealer, warm-toned bronzer, cooltoned bronzer, blush, illuminating powder (highlighter), and setting powder. Along with any other makeup you wish to apply afterwards. What tools will you need? Foundation brush, beauty sponge, bronzer brush, contouring brush, blush brush, highlighting fan brush, fluffy oversized brush to cleanup your setting powder. Step One: Begin like any other day and apply your foundation with a foundation brush for the best coverage possible. It is best to apply a thin layer first and then build-up to the desired coverage to avoid looking “cakey”. Also, keep in mind, to always match your foundation shade to your neck, not your face, so that everything blends seamlessly and you do not end up with a harsh line. Step Two: Apply concealer underneath the eyes, along the bridge of your nose, between your brows, centre of your forehead, along your upper lip (cupids bow), and centre of chin. Blend out with a dampened beauty sponge to soak up extra product and create a flawless look. Always choose a concealer that is two shades lighter than your foundation, you can choose to use coloured concealer to mask any redness or dark circle, but be sure to apply this first. By applying concealer to these areas of your face, this will keep the centre of your face lighter, giving you a sun-kissed glow. Step Three: Dip your dampened beauty sponge into loose translucent powder, then dab underneath your eyes to “set” your concealer and avoid creasing. If you have oily skin, set the rest of your face with translucent powder as well. Use a large fluffy brush to brush off any access powder after a few minutes. Step Four: Using a bronzer brush, apply a warm-tone bronzer around your cheekbones, your temples, hairline and underneath your jaw to give the appearance of a slimmer face. Using a contouring brush, apply a cool-toned bronzer just underneath your cheekbones and along the sides of your nose to create the appearance of higher cheekbones and a slimmer nose. Step Five: Using a large blush brush, apply a complimentary blush just to the apples of your cheeks. Be sure to choose a shade that suits your skin tone and the eye-makeup you will be wearing; use a light hand and buildup the product as needed. Step Six: Now, using a fanned highlighter brush, apply your personally preferred amount of illuminating powder (highlighter) to the tops of your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, and along your cupids bow. This will allow the highest points of your face to glow in the light. Strobing Complete steps one through three, then skip “Step Four” and do not place any makeup product that is darker than your natural skin-tone on your face, continue to Step Five and Six. Step Seven: Then also apply the illuminating powder (highlighter) to the centre of your forehead, the bridge of your nose, your chin and underneath your brows on the brow bone. This will give you the look of “glowing from within” and enhance your natural beauty with less makeup products to apply and a quicker beauty routine. 38

consigning your closet written by nancy stell

Why it works and how you benefit on both ends! With inventory changing daily, the savvy consignors know they need to check often, with some dropping by every other day to see what has arrived!

Today we all are trying to stretch our dollars and why not do so by exploring the great finds you will discover while shopping in consignment shops? Here are just a few of the Pro’s you get from resale shopping. •

Save our environment by giving new life to pre-loved garments.

Get a great selection on colours and styles as yesterdays fashion trends are still alive and well in your local consignment shop.

Designer brands catch everyone’s attention and often so does the price tag! Take advantage of these upscale pieces, often still in excellent condition but at a fraction of the price.

‘Fast fashion’ today equates often to a poorer quality. So brands that were once known for their quality are often found in these shops providing you with better quality pieces at a great price.

Best of all, if you are up for a “treasure hunt”, this is a great way to spend the afternoon, sorting through the clothing in hopes of finding that ‘diamond in the rough’ just waiting to go home with you.

The other benefit of consigning is it puts money in your pocket while doing your part for our planet. If you are like most of us, we all have too much ‘stuff’ and our closets are no exception. Taking the ‘stuff’ you no longer use to a consignment shop is a great way to make room for the new fashions you’re looking for this season while doing your part by recycling. But remember, they won’t have a market for your junk so take the time to pack up your things nicely, use your finest hangers and garment bags and if you have saved the tags, bring them with you so buyers can authenticate it. The Way We Were is located in beautiful downtown Georgetown and has become a well-known destination as a great place to shop. Carrying high quality consigned name brand ladies clothing, accessories that include jewelry, shoes, boots, hats, purses and so much more. If you have some previously loved clothes that you would like to consign or you are just in the market for a new look, visit www.thewaywewere.ca to learn more about this great shop that helps everyone do their part on reducing our carbon foot print on the planet. 42

small spaces, big designs written by sonya stell

Often times, the powder room of your home is used as a guest bathroom. When friends and family come over for dinner, you will point to that little 2-piece bathroom when they ask “Where’s the washroom?”. Though, these small, but convenient powder rooms are often forgotten when planning the design of your home. But, why? Isn’t that the room that nearly every guest will see? Would you not rather have a beautiful mini-spa-like experience for your guests, just like the spa-like ensuites we all either have or wish to have for ourselves? Here’s how to create it: Paint Choose a paint scheme that blends in nicely with the rest of your home, but still has a bit of pop. For an added edge, use the wall that will have your vanity mounted on it as an accent wall, and paint it a different shade or colour. Here, you will see that three walls are painted a light cappuccino colour, while the accent wall is painted a deep blackberry purple. Ensure you use a paint that is recommended for your bathroom to avoid mould and mildew, and is easily cleanable. Modern Vanities The next major design feature of a powder room, is the vanity. Since this room is only a 2-piece bathroom, you will want the vanity to stand out and blend everything together. Here you can see, a floating vanity was selected, with dark black/brown drawers, a bamboo countertop and white squared sink. This modern look is both contemporary and classic, with subtle modern touches that will still be beautiful a decade from now.

Elongated Toilets You may think that there is no possible way you can fit an elongated toilet into such a tiny room, but if you search carefully, there are elongated toilets with a compressed tank that are actually a little bit smaller in depth than a standard toilet. Do your research, take your measurements, and go find the one for you. Mirrors & Artwork Now that your powder room is nearly complete, pick out a large complimentary mirror to be hung above the vanity. While you are at it, choose a large piece of artwork to hang above the toilet and fill up that empty space. If you painted your accent wall a different colour, try to find an image that incorporates that colour scheme to tie it all together. Select a light fixture, soap dish, garbage pale, toilet paper holder and whatever else you feel you need, that compliments the rest of the decor. Here, the accessories are a mirrored finish that enhances the mirror-with-mirroredframe above the vanity. In total the renovation shown here cost less than $1000.00, so if you are on a budget, this is one reno that can fit right in. The most important thing to remember is do a lot of research, find what you like at the right price, and take measurements to ensure everything fits together nicely. If you are unsure of how to incorporate everything into such a small space, reach out to a professional in the field and let their creativity guide you. 44

getting your table ready for entertaining written by sonya stell

This time of year, we plan many occasions to get together with our family and friends and enjoy a delicious meal. Your dining room suddenly becomes the centre of attention and you will want it to be just perfect for when your guests arrive. Here are a few ideas to inspire you this season into creating the perfect dining room decor: Runners Choosing a “runner or large plate to sit underneath your fine china; shown to the left, this designer paired a light blue plate and bowl set with a gold runner to be in the place of a traditional place-mat. This extra pop of gold will bring warmth and seasonal elegance to your dining room set. Dishware For Every Course Always set your table with a medium sized plate on the bottom (on top of the runner) for the main course, a smaller plate for an appetizer or dessert, and a salad bowl on top. Ensure there is enough space around each setting for guest to store their unused dishes until they have reached that course. Crystal Glasses The holidays, large family gatherings and other special occasions are the time to pull out your best crystal glasses. Ensure that you set out at least two for each guest, as some may enjoy a glass of wine with their meal, as well as a glass of refreshing water. Glass Markers What is worse than setting your glass down and not knowing which one is yours? Tie tiny ribbons in varying colours along the bottom of each wine glass, that way guest will know which is theirs. Centre-Piece’s That Wow Shown here, you can see that this designer chose to adorn their table with silver and white ornaments, winding through the centre of the place settings. This is a perfect look for the holidays, but can also be used throughout the winter as a subtle reminder of Christmas time. Larger Chairs at the Head(s) of the Table Utilizing large, comfortable chairs at each head of the table will give your dining room a grand ambiance. Choose chairs that compliment your existing set, but are just slightly larger and prouder than your current ones. This will accommodate extra guests and add to the overall decor. Final Touches Last but not least, the final touches to make your room perfect. Ensure everything has been thoroughly cleaned, dusted and checked over for any stray crumbs. Dim down your chandelier to a medium light and light candles across your buffet or side table. Add some complementary pieces to the tops of these tables, and set out dessert on one of them to entice your guests to stay until the last course. After dinner, you can take a break and let guests serve themselves from a selection of desserts and partake in the casual after-dinner conversations that naturally flow through the room. Having your holiday tree within your dining room is cause for some extra conversation and appreciation of its beauty. Consider fitting your Christmas tree into this room instead this year, and then you can enjoy it while you eat! Once the holidays are over, replace it with a large vase filled with fresh or faux flowers, so you will always have something to enjoy. Stringing little white lights along the ceilings edge can be another great addition to the winter season in your dining room. Choose finely strung lights in white or gold to add a twinkle above while you indulge. Or, you can wrap the windows and doorways with sparkling lights to add an extra welcome to the room. Most importantly, your dining room should be a place of relaxation and fun while you spend quality time with family and friends over this amazing season, with the snow falling outside your window. 46

special spot: links2care written by nancy stell photographs georgetown chevrolet buick gmc

Links2care is a leader, providing high-quality support services to people of all ages throughout the Halton and Peel regions, and local business owners Alana and Trevor Stroeder of Georgetown Chevrolet have chosen to support the Youth Services program of this worth while organization. As new residents of Georgetown, Alana and Trevor knew they wanted to be active and involved in the community and it was a priority for them to help those in need by supporting a local charity. When they first met with Lisa and Amanda of Links2Care, they new right away it was a perfect fit and decided to focus their support on the Youth Services program. “There is little government funding for this age group and grants can be hard to come by.” Alana and Trevor also believe that this is a critical juncture in our youth’s lives and offering support to this vulnerable group as they make the transition into adulthood will ultimate help the entire community. “It was heartbreaking to hear about homeless youth right here in our community and the various challenges youth everywhere face.” Alana explained, and whether they were dealing with mental illness or coming

from an abusive home, they require the help of the local community to become productive members of our society. With a strong belief that it “takes a village to raise a child” and that that responsibility doesn’t end when they hit adolescence, Alana and Trevor could simply not stand by and do nothing so they immediately began planning events to support the Links2Care Youth Services program. You can get more information about this program by visiting: www.theyouthcentres.com The first event was held in July 2015, the Drive for a Cause, which included a charity car wash, BBQ, various giveaways, and the Drive for a Cause itself. GM Canada made it possible for Georgetown Chevrolet to donate $25.00 for each and every test drive taken during the event. This allowed local residents to donate a large amount to the Youth program with no out of pocket expense. Donating on their behalf meant even those who did not have the financial ability to donate could still be a big part of keeping the program running. Watch for this year’s events on their Facebook page in the New Year - Georgetown Chevrolet Buick GMC.

Another ongoing initiative is the dealerships monthly team lunches. Each month a handful of the staff at the dealership cook up a little feast for all of the staff to enjoy. With a different themed menu every month, the dealership pays for the food and each employee then donates $5 to partake in a fantastic hot meal complete with dessert. drive safe, drive on snow tires

written by sonya stell

Winter, and the associated snow, ice, cold and climatic nastiness that goes with it, is now upon us. And you know that winter tires will make your ride safer if you have to drive in icy and snowy road conditions. So having a good set of snow tires installed is a great idea! If you ask someone you know who owns winter tires, they’ll tell you they make a big difference for grip, handling, traction and all-around confidence. They’ll tell you, as well, that winter tires pay for themselves the first time you stop clear of an accident situation, rather than winding up in it. Here’s a look at a few key benefits you can expect by installing a set, especially if your vehicle is brand new! Compromise-free: Winter tires have both a flexible rubber compound and unique tread design that’s made exclusively for use on snow, slush and ice and in cold temperatures. With no compromises made for other seasons, drivers will benefit from significantly increased traction during acceleration, notably shorter stopping distances, and a drastic increase in directional stability at speed. Where all-season tires are a little bit good in the heat and a little bit good in the cold, winter tires specialize in cold-climate driving, and it shows. With the compromise-free, cold-climate engineering behind winter tires, drivers can enjoy the cold-weather travel season with peace of mind to spare for themselves, or anyone using their ride. Maximized AWD performance: All Wheel Drive (AWD) is a favourite bit of powertrain hardware with Canadian shoppers in numerous vehicle types. Today’s latest models have more fast-acting, precise and sophisticated all wheel drive systems than ever, and whether you drive a Subaru, Ford, Acura, Hyundai or Mitsubishi, your ride’s AWD system reacts with millisecond precision to low-traction situations to keep you and your family safe by supporting you in maintaining vehicle control. So, if you’ve invested in AWD, why not consider maximizing the system’s performance with a set of winter rubber? Remember: the only way to increase the amount of physical traction between a vehicle and the road’s surface is through the tires. Proper tires for the season gives your AWD system plenty more grip to work with, allowing it to do its job with maximum effectiveness. Not just for snow and ice: Did you know that all-season or summer performance tires get really, really hard when it’s cold outside? Since effective traction relies on tires being soft and malleable against the roads surface, hard tires can be a recipe for disaster. In cold weather, even on dry roads, the softer, more flexible rubber used in the construction of winter tires provides that all-important give that allseason tires lose when it’s cold out. Translation? Even on dry roads, winter tires work better in the winter. Longer tire life: It goes without saying, but hey, it’s worth a mention. Swapping to a set of winter tires will extend the life of your all-season rubber, while it sits the season out in your garage. This can help offset the up-front cost of your winter tires. Many drivers prefer to mount their winter tires on a set

of black steel wheels, and leave the gleaming factory alloys away from the salt and sand. Enhanced safety system functionality: Never before have automobiles worked so hard to keep drivers and their families safe. Today, highly advanced stability control systems, braking control systems and even hazard-detection features like pre-collision auto-braking are becoming more common. Remember, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, traction assist and stability control systems don’t make traction. They simply help maximize the use of traction that’s available. Provide these systems with more physical grip by installing winter tires, and they’ll work better at keeping you and yours safe. Thirty feet: In most driving situations, thirty feet isn’t a major distance. It’s about as long as a pair of Ford Focuses. The distance across a small intersection. At the highway speed limit, you’re covering thirty feet three times per second. Thankfully, a decent set of winter tires can easily slash 30 feet or more from your stopping distances on snow, possibly making the difference between avoiding and entering an accident. Snow tires are not only a great investment in you and your families safety this winter; but also in your pocket. Many insurance companies offer their clients a discount when you run snow tires on your vehicle. So don’t forget to mention to your insurance company that you have had them installed. R&R Complete Auto and Tire carry a huge selection of tires, with something to fit every budget and preference, and are offering a ½ price oil change or wheel alignment with the purchase of 4 snow tires.
