the history of the ladybug written by nancy stell

With over 450 native species of the ladybug, ladybirds or lady beetles (as they are commonly referred too) just in North America, it’s no wonder that we see them everywhere at this time of the year. And contrary to popular belief, the number of spots on the ladybug does not indicate the age of the ladybug, but rather the type of ladybug. They also vary in colour ranging from red to orange and if the conditions are right, ladybugs can live for two or three years consuming as many as 5,000 aphids ~ about 50 aphids per day. If food is scarce, ladybugs will resort to cannibalism making a meal out of any soft-bodied sibling it encounters. Recently emerged adults or molted larvae are soft enough for a ladybug to chew and if necessary they will eat their eggs or pupa. And did you know that ladybugs are not actually a bug at all? They belong to the beetle family. Ladybugs are also born black developing their bright colouring and distinctive spots within the first few weeks and as they age, their spots begin to fade. This unique colouring is Mother Nature’s way of protecting the ladybug as bright colours usually signify that they are poisonous to predators. And when under attack, the ladybug plays dead and secrets a substance that causes them to taste and smell terrible. This often teaches other animals to leave the ladybug alone. Over the years, the presence of ladybugs has meant many different meanings for different cultures. In Canada, a ladybug that is hibernating in your garage is a sign of good luck. For the English farmer, ladybugs are a sign of a good harvest and if one lands on the hand of a Swedish woman, it was said that the Ladybug was measuring her for wedding gloves. There is certainly some truth to ladybugs being a sign of a good harvest as they are aggressive predators of many aphid species and nectar-sucking insects that feed on your crops and gardens. Eating as many as 500 aphids

a day, ladybugs are a great environmentally friendly way of pest control. You can attract ladybugs to your garden by planting plants that have umbrella-shaped flowers such as dill, caraway, fennel, wild carrot as well as scented geraniums, and they also love dandelions. Unfortunately, the multicoloured Asian ladybug first introduced to Canada in 1988 is known to bite. It was brought over by the U.S. Government to act as an aggressive species for insect control. If you want to eliminate this species of ladybug from your garden simply use warm, soapy water where they have collected. Ladybugs have an average life span of 2 to 3 years so come the winter, they hibernate and they do it in groups. So if you see one ladybug in your house, you can be sure there are more to follow; however, these visitors will not reproduce or lay eggs while inside. Come the spring, likely your ladybug visitors will head back outdoors where they can get their favorite food… Aphids. Be careful not to disturb them as ladybugs release a small amount of their blood from their knee joints, which is yellow and smells when they feel threatened. A ladybug undergoes four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Come early spring, the female ladybug lays up to 1,000 eggs that will hatch within four days. The larva resembles tiny alligators and attaches itself to a leaf, and pupates. Within three to twelve days the adult emerges. Ladybugs are active during the day and go into a state of rest at night tucking their head into the pronotum, similar to a turtle pulling its head into its shell. The most common ladybug has an oval, dome-shaped body with six short legs. An insect that for many years has been a favorite for children, popular in nursery rhymes, viewed by many cultures as lucky and even used as a logo because of the bold colours and simple shape.

pop that patio written by nancy stell

decorating corner written by kim still of decor solutions

Our outdoor living spaces are just as important as our inside spaces and the décor to make them pop is unlimited. Bold colours are trending this year from throw pillows to outdoor carpets and unique accessories. Using a neutral colour for your base colour, vivid hues like Pantone’s Snorkel Blue, Rose Quartz, Peach Echo and Buttercup are popular choices for the 2016 garden. Using Area Rugs To Define A Living Space

Area rugs offer effective, creative, stylish opportunities to define living spaces all around your home, as well as to make them more comfortable. A rug can anchor a room, define it, add warmth, and help layer a room’s décor. They work in a wide variety of contexts, from large open rooms to small spaces, and from minimalist to heavily furnished and decorated environments. Setting off part of a room with an area rug draws the eye, cushions the feet, and can beckon guests to a warmly welcoming seating area. An area rug is one of those details that makes your room’s decor feel “finished.” An area rug says, “This group of furniture belongs together.” SHAPE & SIZE As for the area rug’s shape, consider the room shape and the rug’s purpose. A round area rug works well in a wide, shallow room, including foyers, but they should generally be centered in the room or beneath a light fixture. Elongated rectangular area rugs have a variety of uses, but are especially well suited to hallways, and should be centered and clear of furniture. Squares and rectangles are best for setting off specific living spaces in rooms. An area rug beneath a bed should offer your feet at least 2 feet of soft protection from the shock of a cold floor. In a dining room, the rug should fully encompass all the chairs even in a pulled-out position. In a seating area in the living room, the area rug defines the conversation space; at the least, the front legs of chairs and couches should be on the rug, which not only establishes the space, it prevents sliding furniture as well. Runners should be 4 inches narrower than your hallway and 18 to 24 inches shorter. Make sure they are wide enough to accommodate both feet on the rug when you walk. An extension from our interior, use the same rules for choosing your designs. Take into account the square footage and what you want to use your space for. Do you want a full outdoor kitchen and a wood fire convection oven, or are you going for a more relaxing seating area complete with a sectional couch, perhaps with an outdoor heater or fire element to extend our season? Navy is a popular colour that pairs well with just about any colour. Trending this year is coral, gray and white for that nautical feel as well as yellows and spring green. So now we have the colour, let’s add some dimension by utilizing the space above. Patio pergolas are amazing ways to turn an everyday space into an incredible one. We are seeing all types of pergolas, some more traditional and some very contemporary combining wood and iron. Now you can easily utilize the space above by hanging planter baskets, outdoor lights or decorative outside art. You can even hang bold coloured curtains to add some fun while providing some privacy too. Freestanding shade umbrellas are another great option today; coming is all sizes and colours. The sky is the limit so go wild and enjoy bringing your outdoor space to life this summer. 8

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

COLOUR SCHEMES Designer rugs come in an endless array of colours, patterns, and styles. These characteristics should reference the design motif of the room in a cohesive, complementary way. Room seem lifeless; take advantage of the area rug’s ability to build on the room’s theme, not merely repeat it, to add depth of character and more visual engagement. Use a favorite rug as the basis of the colour scheme in a room. By adding a rug after you have your furniture in place, you can use the rug to accent or tie in your existing colours. UPDATE A ROOM Change out rugs and pillows to update a room for changing seasons, or as a way to introduce new colour trends. HAVE FUN! As with any other aspect of designing your home, using an area rug to decorate and define living spaces should be fun and highly personal. Make rug choices that reflect your personality and emphasize the mood you seek to create in any given room and space. Tip: Always use the correct size of a rug grip to keep your rug from slipping or creeping.

what’s trending? the sunroom written by nancy stell

Bringing the great outdoors indoors creates a beautiful bright open living space that is bug free and protected from all the uncomfortable elements that sometimes pop up unexpected when outdoors. Now one of the top dream additions homeowners are opting for, the sunroom has evolved incorporating heated floors, relaxing and stylish furniture and of course, walls of windows creating a sun-drenched haven. Usually built onto the side of your home, the sunroom should take in the gorgeous surrounding views that your property has to offer. Whether it’s the lake at your cottage or natures finest in the rolling hills of Mono or Caledon, your sunroom will provide shelter while offering a panoramic view of the countryside. Designing your sunroom should incorporate your own personal style and taste constructing it from brick to create a more rustic room, wood to make it feel more warm and cozy or a contemporary style building it out of glass ~ even the roof so you can gaze at the moonlit sky. Skylights are often incorporated into solid roof designs to allow for extra light to stream in. 10

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

When your sunroom flows from your living room the trick is to make it stand alone, not appear to be just another living room. Designers are doing this by incorporating neutral colours and outdoor furniture to maintain that outdoor vibe. Even an outdoors polypropylene rug that can stand up to the outdoor traffic, muddy feet and all, but look like sisal. Over scale windows on the exterior walls, preserves the great outdoor feeling providing lots of natural sunlight. Heated floors and fireplaces help make these rooms functional all year round. Sunrooms are great for getting together with friends and family or just a quiet place to hide away on a Sunday afternoon with a good book. And morning coffee never tasted so good with the tranquility that the daybreak brings. They can even be converted into sleeping quarters providing your guests with an amazing twilight view. A daybed is a great choice if this is what you are going for. Some homeowners are incorporating their TV’s into this space while others set them up with a table and chairs to sit down and enjoy casual dinning.

what’s trending? white kitchens written by nancy stell

Today approximately 40% of all homeowners are choosing white kitchen cabinets making this a full out trend. But having a kitchen that looks like a hospital cafeteria is not all that appealing so designers are helping you “punch up white kitchens” with a splash of colour bringing contrast and personality to these spaces.

by building it with striking black cabinetry contrasting the otherwise white space. Even change up the finishes with a little texture on the shelving unit while choosing a smooth finish on the rest of the kitchen surfaces. If you don’t have a full wall to designate as your focal point, try trimming out windows or painting just one of your walls showing between your cabinets.

Centre Islands are popping up in almost every kitchen design so why not face your Island with a splash of colour? Durable patterned tiles can create a unique focal point while still maintaining a contemporary feel from the white on white cabinets and countertops. Or be even more daring and change up the colour of the entire Island contrasting the perimeter countertops and adding colour to your island cabinets.

Bringing other design elements into your white kitchen, like the popular reclaimed wood trend for exposed ceiling beams, copper range hoods or black Iron French Doors to lead you out to the patio; a rustic-meets-refined stylish feel with unlimited options. A simple and inexpensive way to add some colour is by bringing in some accessories like glass-front cabinets showcasing your colourful dishware, colourful window treatments or bold prints on your chair cushions.

You can never have enough storage space in your kitchen so why not incorporate a floor to ceiling shelving unit on one wall creating a focal point

realtors corner written by gillian vanderburgh and andrea kary (sales representative/licensed assistant) of GillianV&Co.

home staging written by nancy stell

In todays hot real estate market you want to be sure that you put your homes best foot forward to ensure you get the maximum value. Buyers are savvy today and with a good home stager, you can show your homes best qualities while down playing its weaknesses. Clutter is the first thing you want to deal with... Get rid of it! And this doesn’t mean just the small stuff. Too much furniture makes the rooms look small and uninviting so remove any oversized pieces. Arranging your furniture into the middle of your room also opens up the space while creating conversational groupings. Repurposing a room is another great trick home stagers suggest. With the simple addition of an armchair and small table with a lamp, transforms that junk room into a sitting room. Consider creating a yoga space in the baron basement by putting down an inexpensive rubber mat and toss around a few comfy pillows.

Bidding Wars” in Real Estate – Put your Best Foot Forward! Scarce inventory and high buyer demand not only leads to an upward trend on housing prices, but also leads to a more competitive atmosphere. Buyers get discouraged and often hesitate to put forward an Agreement of Purchase on a property they love when they learn they will be ‘competing’. People falsely assume that in ‘a bidding war’ the Seller will invariably select a higher price (over list, even) with few or no conditions. This is NOT always the case! TIMELINES can take precedent over price. If the Seller has a predetermined timeline on their next purchase, a suitable closing date becomes a critical element to be considered. An experienced Buyer Representative will make inquiry to the Seller Representative with regard to timeline expectations before drafting the Offer, giving Buyers the opportunity to meet the criteria. An Offer presented with a closing date that accommodates the Seller is a strong offer. Pre-approved FINANCING is essential. Buyers who have their financial ducks in a row’ before putting forward an Offer are given stronger consideration over those who have not. It is important that your Buyer agent communicates this clearly and with confidence. An Agreement of Purchase and Sale that is presented in a professional manner, in person (when possible) rather than submitted electronically gives confidence to the Seller and the Seller Agent. Experienced Buyer Agents understand the value of “painting the picture” of WHO their buyer is and communicating their respect and appreciation for the intrinsic values of the property. A Sellers’ investment in their property often extends beyond money, so the story of “WHO” is buying their home can absolutely override other higher-priced offers! Real Estate Sales Representatives who have experience working with both Buyers and Sellers understand these nuances, and can strategically deal with both the emotional and rational responses to Offers on both sides of the negotiating table. Being WELL REPRESENTED is an absolute must! And remember. It’s always worth “putting your best foot forward”. 14

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

Make sure you have all three types of lighting in your principle rooms, ambient, task and accent, then increase the watts aiming for a total of 100 watts for each 50 square feet. This will light up your space! If your rooms are on the smaller size, painting the adjacent room the same colour can make them feel bigger. And remember, neutral colours still help sell your home in your main rooms, but if you want to add a punch of colour try it in your powder room or bedroom. Let your artwork showcase creatively by breaking it up a little on your wall and raid your garden for some fresh flowers. A kitchen makeover isn’t in everyone’s budget; so if yours is in need of one, why not just get some new doors and drawer fronts. Paint everything to match and add some new hardware. Even some dishwashers can have their front panels changed to give them a new look. Repair any damage to the floors; hardwood markers come in a variety of shades and are great for covering up scratches. Bathroom tiles can be professionally painted to make them look like brand-new and with a few added touches like rolled-up towels and candles, your bathroom will look and feel like a spa. If you are investing some money into your home to fix it up, many buyers are willing to pay extra for homes that are upgraded with ecofriendly products. Going green still goes a long way.

put a lid on your home written by nancy stell

Constructing a custom built home that is architecturally interesting creates great curb appeal and with lots of leeway on how to design your roof, you can invent a pleasing array of designs. So choose a roof style that will make a statement and then the roofing material to produce the final punch! A Pyramid Roof is one of the more common styles you see and like the name suggests it is shaped like a pyramid. Often seen on smaller structures such as a garage or pool house. The Hip Roof is another more common style and is similar to the Pyramid Roof except it doesn’t come to a point at the top. The four sides meet at a ridge or flat spot. Flat Roofs are very contemporary in style and although they are easier to construct and safer to walk around on, they usually require a little more maintenance since they are without a slope. Commonly seen in dry warmer climates, a flat roof can offer more living space when you create your own private roof top oasis.

18

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

A Skillion Roof has a single slope and is often used on a portion of the home. It is especially common on multi-level homes and carports that come off the side of your home. They are inexpensive to construct and have a steeper and more noticeable pitch than a flat roof. Another more unusual style is a Bonnet Roof that has a double slope on all four sides of the house. The upper area has a steeper pitch from the lower area, which has a shallower pitch. This lower area is often seen as a cover on a veranda or an outdoor porch area. A little more challenging to construct, a bonnet roof is often more expensive than other more common styles. Gabled roofs, roofs that look like a triangle from the front of the house is often used on homes with extra wings and with the addition of dormers, this style of roof is quite striking. Taking on many forms, gabled roofs can be accommodated on various shaped homes with a particularly interesting Saltbox style seen on homes where one wall is shorter than the wall on the other side. A Gambrel roof, that is commonly associated with Dutch buildings, is another type of Gable roof that we often see on barns. This type of roof allows for the greatest use of space under the roof.

keeping those weeds in check written by nancy stell

Keeping our gardens free of weeds without the harsh use of chemicals once so popularly used, can be a challenge. Here are a few ideas to help you manage the task. Pulling weeds out can be difficult especially those with taproots, like the common dandelion. To make it easier, water the area around the dandelion or tackle them right after a heavy rain. When the ground is softer you can easily insert a knife alongside the root to help loosen it before you pull it out. Don’t throw out all the boiled water from making your dinner. Pasta water or potatoes can be poured right onto weeds in your garden. The scalding water will cause even the toughest weeds to shrivel up in a couple of days. A lack of sunlight will cause low growing weeds to die. Use several layers of newspapers to cover up crabgrass and clover or use it in your gardens and cover it with mulch to stop the weeds from growing in the first place. Make sure it is the biodegradable kind.

24

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

And that table salt that you are looking to get rid of now that you have learned why Himalayan Pink salt is so much better for you can be used to create a good weed barrier along lawn edgings. Just be careful because it can erode concrete. Your lawn and gardens compete for the resources; sunlight, water and nutrients so plant them densely and maintain a thick, healthy lawn and the weeds won’t stand a chance. Vinegar not only works for cleaning inside your home; pour some on those stubborn weeds and they will be dead within a few days. This works extremely well on the weeds with those long taproots. Some of our common weeds are actually editable, especially dandelions which make for a great cleansing agent in our bodies. Other weeds like dock and chicory can also be tossed into our salads, so check out a good cookbook that specializes in the plants that are edible.

An essential element of good health, how can we consume salt and still be healthy? Providing many trace minerals and elements that are vital for our bodies to function well, it’s important that you consume the right types of salt to truly benefit from it. Every cell in our body needs salt and we rely on it to keep good bone density, proper circulation and stabilized blood sugar levels. So why is it that we hear so much negative coverage when it comes to eating salt? Because the commonly known white table salt that so many people have in their saltshakers today, unfortunately has been over processed removing much of its goodness while having anticaking agents such as aluminum hydroxide, added to it along with other synthetic chemicals that can actually be toxic including bleach to make it white. And where does this salt actually come from? It’s the flaky residue from oil digging! Some of the health dangers from consuming this salt: Now just mimicking the taste of salt, the high levels of aluminum in your diet is now being linked to a possible cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Consuming salt that has had its’ minerals stripped out of it also causes intracellular water to be drawn out of your body’s cells to counteract it. This then puts a strain on your kidneys, which over time can impair their ability to remove waste products from your blood. And with ongoing consumption of this poor quality salt, many health issues can arise including the following. High blood pressure is one of the many dangers of too much sodium chloride in your diet and when it is prolonged it may lead to serious cardiovascular problems, kidney failure and more. It is believed that many chronic imbalances are caused by excessive consumption of table salt including diabetes, gout and obesity. This is not just the salt

that is in your saltshaker, but also in most packaged and processed foods, which contain exorbitant amounts of table salt. Kidney problems are another issue that can arise from eating too many salty snacks. Altering the sodium to potassium balance in your blood, this reduces the filtering functions of your kidneys and puts them under stress. If you have ever suffered from painful kidney stones, you know that this is not something anyone would choose to do. Digestive problems can also arise when you consume excessive sodium chloride as it can damage your digestive tract. The sodium literally draws water out of your cells and into your tissues causing either dehydration or fluid retention. Excessive amounts of table salts, used as preservatives has been linked to many health issues including PMS and major nervous system disorders such as anxiety and depression. Sadly this salt is also highly addictive, the more the body becomes used to the high levels of fake sodium the more it craves it. When healthy salt is used in moderation, it provides a rich source of trace minerals. Himalayan crystal salt, sourced from the deep mines within the Himalayas, is a beautiful pink colour and contains over 80 essential minerals and trace elements that are good for your health and over all well being. Since ancient times it has been known for its healing and restorative powers, in fact so much so that it was once used as a currency system priced higher than its weight in gold. There are so many significant benefits that your body will enjoy when you start using pink salt on a regular basis. Here are just a few of them and why you should replace your white table salt with this mineral rich salt instead. There are 84 different types of minerals, all in their natural form and with todays over processed foods often falling short with nutrients, Himalayan Salt is regarded as the cleanest, purest and most mineral-dense salt on our planet.

Real salt also helps to remove acidic toxins from your system and can help bring your body’s pH levels back into the normal, slightly alkaline range. It doesn’t affect the fluid balance in the same way as processed white table salts does either, so your system maintains a better intracellular water level. Adding a little pink crystal salt to your meals can help improve the way you absorb the nutrients from your food. It is also believed that it works as a natural antihistamine helping to clear up lung congestion. You can use this salt to make a natural treatment for sinus and respiratory issues as well as balancing out your body’s acid and alkaline levels. Natural Treatments: Respiratory: Bring 4 liters of water to a boil, and then dissolve a ½ cup of salt into it. Lean your face over the pot, keeping about 12 inches from it so the steam doesn’t burn your face. Cover your head with a towel to form a tent and breathe normally for 5 to 10 minutes, taking an extra deep breath in and out once every few minutes. Body Balancing: You can also prepare a pink salt bath to help promote a true balance between your acid and alkaline levels. Simply fill your tub with hot water, dissolve 1-½ pounds of salt into it. You can also add around 2 cups of Epsom salts as well. Soak for 20 to 30 minutes and don’t forget to sip on a glass of water, this will help to promote sweating and detoxing. Himalayan Pink Salt is a relatively inexpensive and an easily accessible health decisions you can make for yourself and your family this year. As like all diet changes, it is wise to seek professional guidance especially if you are on a regulated diet or taking prescribe medication for your health conditions.

keeping your fruits and veggies + Writing | Nancy Stell

fresh

Our farmers markets are open and fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant. Choosing to purchase your fruits and vegetables from places where it has been picked fresh that morning and haven’t been factory washed or ripened, means that you will enjoy higher levels of nutrients while your produce lasts longer! Here are some tips on how to store some of the in-season fruits and vegetables you are likely picking up these days:

Remember that produce that sits together will ripen together so make sure you have lots of room to store everything you have brought home, both in your refrigerator and on your counter. Your fruits naturally produce ethylene gas, also known as ‘ripening gas’, as they start to mature. And some produce more than others so when placed together in a crowed space, you unknowingly expose your produce to a very high level causing the ripening to accelerate. Keeping your produce in tack also maximizes its nutritional values and helps slow down the ripening process. If you must cut your produce before hand, cover it with a delicious dressing that will coat it and help create a barrier from the air. In the refrigerator: • Fruits that have already gotten ripe will keep fresh longer if stored in the refrigerator. • Cut up fruit and vegetables should be stored in glass or BPA free plastic containers in your refrigerator. • Berries and mushrooms, still in the containers you bought them in, and then stored in the refrigerator. Mushrooms; however, do best in brown paper bags so transfer them if you purchased them covered with plastic wrap. • Keep these vegetables in your crisper: broccoli, cauliflower, celery and bell peppers.

32

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

On the counter:

• Tomatoes • Potatoes* • Onion and Garlic* • Cucumbers • Bananas* • Fruits with stones, like peaches and plums – stem side down • Whole melons • Lemons, limes and oranges

*Don’t keep potatoes and onions near each other, as the onions will cause your potatoes to spoil much faster. Banana’s give off a lot of ethylene gas so keep them away from other produce that you are storing on the counter and put them in plastic wrap to seal the crown. The riper the fruit the more ethylene gas they produce so be sure to toss out any over ripe fruit right away.

I just bought a condo...

now what? + Writing | Sweatman Law Firm

A condominium is a type of legal ownership where the property is divided between privately owned units and common elements. Each unit owner owns the unit as well as a proportion of common elements, which includes such things as hallways, lobbies and elevators and there are also “exclusive use common property elements,” such as balconies, parking spaces, and storage lockers, which are outside the unit’s boundaries but are for the exclusive use of the unit owner. Required Documents When buying a condo, any offer should be conditional on your lawyer reviewing the Status Certificate. This package generally contains financial statements, budgets, reserve fund audits/balance, declaration, rules and regulations, bylaws, master insurance policy information, a legal description of the unit and management contract if applicable and the condo status certificate. Ensure your lawyer reviews the Status Certificate so the condominiums financial health can be evaluated. It is important to know how the monthly fees are being spent, whether there is a reserve fund and if your unit’s previous owner is all paid up on their fees. If they are not, you may be liable for this deficit. What is a Reserve Fund? A Reserve Fund is set up to fund major repairs or replacements to the condominium’s common elements that might be undertaken. Generally, it is at least 10% of the condominium’s total operating expenses. The Condominium Act sets out that a Reserve Fund Study, which evaluates the condominium’s common elements, estimate

their expected lifespans, and estimate any repair or replacement costs, is to be done “periodically” which has generally been interpreted to mean every three years. Condo Regulations Read the condo bylaws, rules, and regulation, and ensure none of these stipulations will be an issue for you. Take special note of any liabilities that might be imposed on you, such as if one of your guests breaks something, and what you are permitted to do in the common elements, as well as any restrictions. Some bylaws, rules and regulations can impact your lifestyle. For example: What can you replace? Can you have pets? What can you store in your unit? How many people can occupy your unit? Are there restrictions on noise? Are there restrictions on when certain amenities can be used? Where is smoking allowed? Your attendance might also be required at condominium meetings, or you might be expected to serve on activity boards. Condo Fees Condo fees generally cover heat and water (not electricity), property-management fees, security fees, daily upkeep of common elements, and the reserve fund. Closing Costs When you purchase real estate in Ontario, you are required to pay a Provincial Land Transfer Tax. If you are purchasing in Toronto, you must also pay Municipal Land Transfer Tax. You may also want to budget for a bank appraisal fee, legal fees, high-ratio mortgage insurance premium, prepaid tax reimbursement and prepaid condo fee. InOurSpace | Summer 2016

It was created last summer and so much has happened in less than a year! We are very excited to announce the grand opening of our office in downtown Bolton. The office opens on June 29th. This is a big step for us, and we are delighted to have a lovely new home in a heritage building in downtown Bolton. This will give us a great presence in the best part of town! There have been many other exciting things happening to us! Here are some highlights. • We officially became a not-for-profit corporation in the fall. After dealing with the legal red tape, we got our not-for-profit status in October. • After many months of labouring, we now have a comprehensive website that we are very proud to share. We meet the third Wednesday of the month in Bolton and are always looking to welcome new participants. • Late last summer, we attended the Town of Caledon Seniors Task Force as interested members of the public so that we could understand the town’s Adult 55+ Strategic Initiative to make Caledon more “older adult” friendly. We learned about the town planning strategy. • Caledon’s Mayor, Allan Thompson, hosted a Seniors Forum in the fall which we attended to learn more about options for seniors in the Caledon area. to pump or not to pump written by plumb perfect

Your septic system is your own personal sewage treatment plant. It is also a living ecosystem. Sadly not many people know how a septic system really works or how to care for it. They think of it as simply as an underground holding tank that makes their waste disappear, and when it doesn’t, they call a septic pumper. A soon-to-be client of ours came home one night to find their septic had backed up in their basement. They quickly called their septic pumper to pump out the tank believing that their problem would be solved. However, after two more back-ups and two more pump outs within a matter of a few months, they realized something more may be going on and called us.

So what can cause a septic to back up? • Grease or debris blockage • Clogged filters • Misaligned or broken pipes • Roots • Pump or float not functioning • Overuse of chemicals such as anti-bacterials, detergents, fabric softeners... • Driving on septic system • Building a deck, garden, hot tub, etc. on top of the septic system • Too much water getting into system from plumbing problems, poor drainage...

Typically, a full tank is just a symptom of an underlying problem. Far too often septic pump outs are performed unnecessarily. Septic tanks generally only need to be pumped out about every 3-5 years, depending upon the health of the system, and then only to remove the sludge that has built up.

A septic repair/maintenance company can diagnose the problem and offer the correct solution. They can also provide you with information on how to care for your septic system so it can function at peak efficiency for years to come.

Solids settle to the bottom of the tank where bacteria gradually decompose them. Over time, some partially and non-decomposed waste remains, forming a sludge that builds up and eventually needs to be pumped out.

When it does come time to have your tank pumped out, make sure the pumper removes all the sludge, even from the corners, and checks to confirm that he has. Help him (and your septic) by having a garden hose nearby so he can wash out the corners in the tank. For professional septic repairs, maintenance and inspections, call Plumb Perfect at 1-888-4581979.

beat the heat written by nancy stell

The hot summer days are something we have all been waiting for, but sometimes it is just down right hot! Here are some great tips on how to beat the heat this summer and help you stay cool. Loose clothing will keep you cool so rather than wearing your shorts and tank top, opt for a loose fitting, flowing maxi dress and you will feel much cooler. And for your underwear, lose the padded bra and go for the unlined bralette. Careful on your fabric choices too, lightweight fabrics are great, but if they don’t have a little structure to them, they will stick to you like glue. Choose an open-weave knit for a cover up if the even breeze is a little cool. It still allows for the air to pass through while providing you with that extra layer. Cotton versus synthetic? When it comes to summer, you want natural fabrics that are better at absorbing sweat and dry faster. Avoid lining in jackets, skirts and dresses. Often they are made from synthetic fabrics and combined with the extra layer, will just make you hot! Stick to light colours too. Dark colours absorb light while light colours reflect it.

InOurSpace | Summer 2016

After a busy day at the office or a fun day out exploring, take a hot shower to wash off any dirt and dead skin cells that are likely making you feel hotter. A cold shower may make you feel refreshed for the moment, but it will actually raise your internal temperature making you sweat again. Wash your clothes after every wear so you get rid of any make-up residue, sweat or dust that you picked up. It will help keep your clothes more breathable and you cooler. Accessories are great, but during a heat wave they just weigh you down. Heavy beading or anything made of metal can actually trap body heat so

keep them to a minimum. Bring your shade with you by simply wearing a wide-brimmed hat or tie a lightweight scarf to your bag so you can drape it over your shoulders or your head if you can’t get out of the sun. Backpacks are great for carrying your stuff, but on a hot summer day they can melt to your back. Opt for a small tote that you can carry crossed over your body. Your feet can also be a source of heat and wearing socks can actually help absorb your sweat and keep them feeling cool. Did you know that the soles of your feet have more sweat glans than any other area of your body?

keeping your hair and nails healthy written by nancy stell

It’s no secret, if you want to be healthy the best way to do so is by eating properly and this holds true if you want to have healthy hair and nails this summer. Your hair needs protein to keep it strong and healthy and without enough it will go into a resting phase. A good way to add protein to your diet is first thing in the morning. Add a scoop of Whey protein into your morning smoothie and it will also help keep you filling fuller longer. Iron is another essential nutrient to keep your hair and nails healthier and red meat is loaded with it. Having a lean cut of beef once a week can help provide the iron your body needs. We have all heard about antioxidants and how our bodies need them to protect them against free radical damage including the impact this damage can have on our hair and nails. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, having one of the highest amounts of all of the fruits. Add them to your yogurt, salads or just by themselves, they are delicious and healthy all at the same time. Almonds are another great source of protein and are loaded with magnesium, which helps your body naturally handle stress, a major factor in hair loss. As well as Oysters which provide your body with zinc and milk that is rich in calcium and fortified with vitamin D. Eggs offer another source of protein as well as biotin, a B complex vitamin that, if deficient, often reveals its self with weak hair and nails. The list goes on and on, as good nutrition is the key to your overall health and wellness, even when it comes to your hair and nails. So this summer, if you want to look good, make sure you are getting all the necessary vitamins and nutrients that you need.

summer car maintenance check list written by nancy stell

Here comes summer and that means you will be bringing out those specialty cars, vintage cars or just hitting the open highways with your everyday car. But don’t get left in the dust because you forgot your car still needs some basic maintenance to keep it running smoothly. Here is your summer checklist: • Radiator Flush: over time radiator fluid will break down and start to corrode the inside of your radiator. Once a year you should do a radiator flush to avoid further unwanted problems. • Replace your Windshield Wipers: winter is hard on your wipers and you can hit some heavy downpours now that we are into the summer season. Change your wipes now and you won’t get caught in the rain. • Check your Headlights: with the sun setting later these days you don’t always notice a headlight out. Be sure to check them, front and back to make sure they are all working. • Inspect your Brakes: twice a year you should have your brakes and brake fluid checked as this is one aspect of safe traveling you don’t want to play around with. • Check your Battery: corrosion can build up over winter and affect the connection to the battery posts. A simple cleaning will make sure you won’t have trouble starting your vehicle this summer. If your car has been in storage make sure the battery is fully charged before you try to start your car.

• Tire Pressure & Tread: you don’t want your car slipping out from under you simple because your tires are worn out or the pressure is too low. Make sure you have adequate tread left on those summer tires or perhaps it’s time to look at buying a new set. If your car sat on them all winter, check for bulges or cracks in the rubber. • Air Filter: you should always replace your air filter twice a year. • Engine Fluids: After a long winter in storage, make sure all the fluids are topped up including your oil, coolant, power steering, brakes and fuel. • Visual once over: it’s always a good idea just to take a good look in the engine bay and under the car for any signs of trouble. Look for cracks or

deterioration in the wires and hoses, make sure the clamps are tight and if you have had the car in storage, make sure you don’t have any unwanted visitors nesting or chewing any components. Ensuring that your car is road worthy and operating at its best will not only help keep everyone safe on the roads this summer, it will also ensure that you get to where you are going without having problems along the way.
