InOurSpace | Winter 2014
Hopefully you have read my previous editorial titled “Welcome Into My Space” in our Autumn 2014 issue, if not, be sure to check it out online at www.inourspacemagazine. com. This past summer, I moved to Georgetown and completed several renovations on my home; utilizing the skill set and products of many In Our Space participants. The end result looks amazing! With a lot of help from Caledon Tile and Caledon Fireplace, we completed these renovations in little over a month. My final piece - a custom glass breakfast bar in the kitchen made by Caledon Tile brought the room to life. I would like to share with you some tips and tricks that I used to pull the whole look together. Picking the paint: I like colour. A lot of colour. I mean every room a different colour — colour. But how do you paint every room a different colour and still walk in the front door and say “wow”? I’m very fond of CIL paint, it has been my choice of paint since I moved into my first apartment. One of the best things that CIL does is put little pictures of butterflies, stars, coffee cups etc. on the top of every paint chip. That little cute picture is more than just that, it helps you pick colours that are in the same family of tones. For myself, I started off in the kitchen, I matched a cappuccino colour to my backsplash, flooring and cabinetry; the paint card I chose had a little butterfly at the top. I wanted a bright blue in my family room, accenting the grey tile and striking new fireplace. So I took a look at all of the millions of shades of blue, narrowed it down to the shade I liked best and picked the card with the little butterfly on top. I also wanted blue in my living room, however you can see the living room from my family room, so they definitely needed to match. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I just choose the blue three shades darker than the blue for my family room on the same paint chip. Problem solved. For my front entranceway, I have a semi-circular staircase coming down and the walls stretching two stories. I wanted to make a statement and the beige that the previous home owner had picked just wasn’t doing it. I picked a dark forest green, both calming yet bold; and again, I choose the card with the butterfly at the top. I had originally intended on painting my upstairs and downstairs hallways this same dark green, but once it was up on the wall, I realized it might be a little strong. So I choose a green four shades lighter on the same paint chip and continued that into the hallways, and I’m so glad that I did. It’s subtle and ties all of the colours in together.
up with a unique idea, I painted the beam the same flat black colour I did on the far wall of the family room, clearly separating the rooms and the warm and cool colours. As you can see, a lot of thought went into my paint choices. Finishing with furniture: I’ll admit that most of my furniture has been collected over the years, many pieces actually coming from Ikea (I love that store). However, I had never had a family room and living room before, so I got to pick out all new furniture for my family room. I choose to go with a grey pallet, offsetting the blue and keeping with the cool colours. I found the biggest couch that would fit in the room, a sectional with left side chaise, woven in dark grey fabric. On the floor, I picked up an area rug from The Carpet Palace that incorporated greys, blues and whites. My coffee table and side table are from the same collection, with brushed nickel legs and white glass tops. My television stand is high gloss black lacquer, matching my black wall perfectly and black goes with everything. The final touch was a white swivel chair from Georgetown Living Lighting — the one featured on our fifth anniversary front cover of our last issue! I enjoyed sitting on it so much to shoot the front cover that I brought it home. My home is still a work in progress, every week I am bringing home new little trinkets to add in different rooms. Candles for the breakfast bar, a wintery scene to celebrate the season, a sparkling penguin and owl for the mantel, miniature ornaments for Christmas time… the list goes on and on. The golden rule that I follow is this: Rooms that are painted and furnished in cool colours (white, grey, blue and green) are accented with silvers, blacks, whites and stainless steel. Rooms that are painted and furnished in warm colours (brown, red, orange, yellow) are finished off with golds, browns and bronze. This way everything coordinates and compliments everything else. You can mix and match, especially if you have an open concept home, but generally it is best to follow this rule. I hope you have enjoyed this sneak peek at my home, I have only scratched the very surface here with some of my decorating ideas. Perhaps another editorial feature will come next issue...
Now that I had all of my colours complimenting one another, I got creative. I have a mild obsession with having a black wall, my first apartment had one, I had planned for one in my first home and then I moved. So now, it was time for a black wall again. Creating a focal point in my family room, I painted the far back wall solid flat black, I then tied some string to a screw (yes, just a plain old screw), grabbed some painters tape and began taping stripes onto my wall. I painted inside of the tapped area with a high gloss black, and once the tape was peeled off I had a beautiful matte black and high gloss black striped wall. This technique is a little challenging and requires a lot of patience; in my first apartment I had done this same thing, though I had ten stripes on a very long wall. This time, I have three on a short wall — I learned from my mistakes, it is harder than it looks. I used a colour blocking technique to create interest in my kitchen. I had this beam that came out of the wall, dividing my kitchen and family room. I had painted the outside walls of my kitchen chocolate brown (adding a twist to the cappuccino), but now I had a problem. If I wrapped the chocolate brown colour around the pole, it would be butting up against my bright blue. Brown is a warm colour and blue is a cool colour, put together you get bleh and I didn’t want that in my newly renovated kitchen. So I came InOurSpace | Winter 2014

publishers’ note You know that winter has finally arrived when you wake up one morning, get dressed in your best autumn outfit, strut around the house in your most stylish boots, light-weight jacket and then... you take one step outside and there is white stuff all over the ground, it hurts to breathe and your skin feels like it is glazing over with ice. Some of us rejoice at this time of year, some of us loathe it; but I think all of us get that sudden excitement that the holiday season is nearing and wintertime has arrived. Now is the time for hot chocolate, warm dinners, cozy fireplaces and snowy fun while we await Santa Claus, the turn of the new year and our love ones embrace on Valentine’s Day. Even though it is cold and sometimes dreary, we find peace in the fact that this is a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate the holidays once again. In Our Space magazine is celebrating a milestone of its own, last issue was our Fifth Anniversary Edition and now we are continuing to commemorate our fifth year of publishing this amazing magazine that we have worked so very hard to achieve. Take a look back with us on page thirty, where we typically feature one beautiful home, but that was not enough for us this issue — we are highlighting a little piece of ALL of our past feature homes. Seventeen issues worth of feature homes, to be exact. We have sorted through what we thought was one of the most interesting aspects of each and every home to share with you once more, hopefully inspiring you with some great home renovations and decorating ideas for your winter projects. We would like to send out a special thank you to all of the professionals who made these homes possible and the homeowners who graciously allowed us to take a peak inside of their lives for a day. Over the past five years, we have showcased a “special spot” in each issue; focusing on a place within our regions that you and your family have hopefully enjoyed. Going forward, we have decided to dedicate our special spot to a community service that is made possible by the amazing volunteers who devote their time chivalrously. Financially, these organizations depend on the support of the local businesses and members of the community. We hope that by showcasing one of these remarkable causes as our special spot to you, our readers, that you will help us share their great messages, support their missions and of course, utilize their services if you are in need. This issue, we have chosen the Family Transition Place, located in Orangeville, with satellite offices in Bolton and Shelburne. The Family Transition Place (FTP) offers safety, support and hope to those in the community who have suffered from abuse; learn more about this very important special spot on page fifty-five of this issue. Last issue, I shared my personal story of renovating my new home; titled “Welcome into My Space” where I discussed how we tore down, rebuilt and redesigned pieces of my home in Georgetown. Absolutely beautiful work was done by Caledon Tile and Caledon Fireplace, making my new house feel like a home; these guys did phenomenal work and it looks amazing. This issue, I have written another editorial feature, titled “Welcome into My Space Part Two” focusing on my interior decor choices once the space was completed; discussing the importance of coordinating your paint colour throughout the entire floor and how to blend warm and cool colours together. Be sure to check it out on page four and five of this issue! This holiday season, whether you are awaiting Christmas Day, counting down until 2015 or sipping wine with your significant other — or waiting for our spring issue to come out, settle in with a nice cup of hot chocolate and indulge yourself in the many interesting stories that we have shared this issue. For the ladies, we have our favourite In Our Closet feature showing you what to wear this season, along with some fashionable makeup trends, how to protect your golden locks and a spotlight on Noah Brown Bridal Boutique: another mother-daughter team who bring some of the best seamstress work to our region, with beautiful wedding and formal gowns, quality ladies wear, knitted pieces and accessories. For the boys (and automobile savvy women), we have included some winter-ready auto tips. It looks like we are in for another good, long winter, so get your vehicle prepared and safe for this slippery, cold season. Every issue we strive to provide you with a little something for everyone; calling all self-proclaimed foodies, fashionistas, auto-enthusiasts and home-decor-obsessors, along with those who are young and those who are young-at-heart. Enjoy this issue of In Our Space magazine and have a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and an amazing winter season — and don’t forget to keep living, working and playing in our space!

tying the knot written by sonya stell
For many of us, winter really is the most magical time of the year. So holding your wedding during this season just adds to the celebratory feel. And the opportunities for making a stylish statement are vast: Winter weddings can really run the gamut from all-white fêtes that sparkle with crystals and faux snow to country-cabin chic made cozy with plaids and branches. Start with these tips and let your imagination soar. Your Paper Trail... Set the tone with your stationery. Paper with a sheen echoes the look of a blanket of fresh snow, while handmade card stock with jagged edges is a perfect addition to an Aspen-inspired celebration. When it comes to embellishments (on invitations, place cards and more), consider self-adhesive crystals, antique lace or plaid flannel ribbon bands or natureinspired accents like small twigs or faux snowflakes. Your Menu... Keep your guests as cozy during the reception as they felt during your vows. The perfect seasonal menu should consist mostly of hot dishes. Unique variations of a bruschetta, such as melted goat cheese with mushrooms or smoked mozzarella with a tomato confit make great hors d’oeuvres. A hearty, puréed soup with a crème fraîche garnish is a warming starter course. Consider serving your main course family-style at each table, which allows for a more communal experience. Your flavour profile could include pear, apple, cranberry, leek, ginger or mint. Your Fashion Look... Thanks to Princess Kate, sleeves are a strong trend and perfectly suited to winter. Thicker, crisper satin fabrics are a great look for a wedding taking place late in the year, but a sheer, flowy and ethereal dress can be just as stunning this season. Accessories can really set the tone so consider a chic faux-fur stole or a sweeping plaid cape to keep warm during your outdoor photos. I also love the idea of adding great costume pieces to your reception look like “icy” crystal bangles or a great wintryfabric headband in plush wool or velvet.

Your Design... No matter what look you’re going for here, candlelight is essential to a wintertime wedding. Lanterns, votives, pillars — all in assorted heights, containers and even colours will add a gorgeous glow to your decor. Wooden tables are perfect for the season, either contrasted with a delicate pure-white runner or complemented with a great flannel fabric. Branches — easily collected from the outdoors (thank you Mother Nature!) — are a perfect accent to any centerpiece or table design and can be embellished with hanging crystals or small floral clusters. Your Cake... A tall white cake accented with sparkling sugars would certainly fit the bill here, especially if each slice was drizzled with warm white chocolate right before it was passed to guests! And I also love the idea of a unique spin on dessert time: Seasonal pies (apple, pumpkin, cranberry-nut) cut and served hot with a tiny scoop of ice cream are a delicious alternative. Dos for winter weddings: - Consider wonderful winter accessories like wraps, shawls and jackets for your bridesmaids. - If there’s potential for snow, aim to have your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception in one venue to keep travel to a minimum. - Be sure to provide guests with an attended coat-check area to accommodate all those extra outdoor layers. Don’ts for winter weddings: - Don’t get your heart set on flowers that may be out of season. They may be extremely expensive or even impossible to obtain. Your floral designer can suggest winter-wedding appropriate blooms (like ranunculus or tulips). - Stay away from thick sauces and heavy meats. You want your guests to feel light enough on their feet for the dancing ahead! - Don’t choose an out of the way venue. You may have longed for that cozy little wedding in a tucked-away inn, but poor road conditions could prevent your guests from getting there.

decorate the halls written by sonya stell
It’s that time of year again... the snow has fallen, the leaves have blown away and a chill has taken to the air. While many of us await our favourite holidays that carry us through this winter season, we take great pleasure in decking the halls. Although the winter outside might be dreary, your decor inside can remain cheery. Warm up your home for the winter season with our coziest decorating ideas; you will learn how simple it is to make a smooth transition from fall to winter using our favourite multipurpose decorating tips. We have the best seasonal updates and do-it-yourself projects to help you fill your home with the comforts of the holiday season on a dime. Check out these simple ways to keep your home warm and cozy... and of course, festive this season: Santa Claus is coming to town... This Christmas if you are tired of the standard red and green, try out some fresh and fun holiday colour schemes that you can use to deck your halls, walls and more. Beautiful golds and shimmering silvers can create a glittering look, with snow covered faux plants and trees - this look is beautiful. Many retailers have a stunning collection of items within this colour scheme, but if you are on a budget, piece together your own unique display utilizing your arts and crafting skills. Create a vase filled with snowy delights, put up a tree filled with silvers, blues and greens, surrounded with twinkling white lights. Then continue the theme with matching wreathes and garlands throughout your home. Add cute little penguins, polar bears, snowy owls and many other wintertime animals to your mantels and countertops as a sweet little touch.

Three, two, one... Happy New Year! Of course, after our few days of celebrating Christmas, gift giving, family dinners and boxing day shopping; the next big event to look forward to is the new year. If you are hosting New Year’s at your own home this year, you’ll definitely want to un-deck the halls with holiday cheer and gear up for 2015. If you used the silver and gold colour scheme for your Christmas decor, you are in luck! Strip your trees, wreaths and garlands and replace all of the ornaments and clearly Christmas decorations with glittery snowflakes, cute little winter animals and Happy New Year signs. Everything else can stay, after all it is still winter of course. Love is in the air... The last major holiday of the winter season is one of the biggest romance celebrations of the year - Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for a fun new twist to surprise your significant other, leave all of your winter decor up (minus the Happy New Year signs, which were hopefully taken down January 2nd) and just add in some pretty pink and red hearts, rose pedals and candles. Reds and pinks compliment silvers and golds beautifully, and the subtle addition to your already in-place home decor will create a romantic ambiance without your home screaming “it’s Valentine’s Day!” Plus, afterwards you can just pluck the hearts and pedals out of place and store them away for next year.

fork, knife and spoon written by sonya stell
Hosting a formal dinner party this season? Some of us have it memorized on how to set the perfect formal table, but many of us are just guessing. We have researched and determined that this is one of the best ways to set a table, beginning from left to right. The left hand side... First and foremost, place a folded napkin on the far left hand side of the person who will be sitting in the chair. Traveling to the right, next place a small salad fork and beside that a large dinner fork. Directly above these two forks, place a small bread plate with a bread knife on top of the plate. Centre stage... In the centre of your table setting, first place the large dinner plate (or “service” plate) and on top of that, place a small salad plate. Above the plates, place a small cake fork with the handle facing to the left; and above that, set a small dessert spoon with the handle facing to the right. At the very top of the table setting, put a place card with your guest’s name on it.
Glasses, glasses, glasses... Now that your table is set, it’s time to layout your glassware. Curving on an angle from the place card to the cup and saucer (from left to right), set one water goblet, then a red wineglass and then a white wineglass.
The right hand side... Directly beside your plates (on the right hand side) place the dinner knife, next to that the teaspoon, and next to that the larger soup spoon. Beside the spoons, place a cup and saucer for tea or coffee.
And that is how you set a formal table for this holiday season! Always remember “The fork, knife and spoon had a fight. The fork went left because the knife and spoon were right.”

“fool-proof” turkey
First you must choose the right turkey for you. Organic – fresh – frozen. You need approximately 1 to 1 ½ pounds of turkey per person, throw in a few extra pounds for bones and that’s the size you will want to purchase. Instead of putting your turkey on a traditional style cooking rack, try creating a natural one by layering carrots, parsnips, onions and celery on the bottom of your pan. This not only creates great flavour for your gravy, but also lifts the turkey off the bottom so the hot air can circulate all around it better. Stuffing cooked on the side is a safer way to prepare it. It also reduces the amount of time you actually need to cook your turkey, which prevents it from drying out. Just loosely fill the cavity with onions and herbs and then prepare your favorite stuffing recipe to cook on the side. Tightly packing it into a foil log to prevent it from toasting too much.
18
InOurSpace | Winter 2014
Prepping your turkey is easy. Make sure it is completely dry and then rub the skin with butter or oil. This helps keep the meat moist. You can even place pats of butter under the skin if you like. Then skip the basting – every time you open the door the heat fluctuates which can cause the turkey to dry out. Cover loosely with foil and cook in a preheated oven at 325 degrees. (it will take about 20 minutes per pound) Remove the foil for the last hour of roasting. Always check with a proper meat thermometer, inserting it into the thickest part of the turkey around the thigh, making sure it reads 165 degrees before you take it out of the oven. Then let it rest for another 15 to 20 minutes and the temperature should rise another 10 degrees or so.

crowned a royal champion written by nancy stell photographed by claudette ledoux handler ronnie davidson
Every year competitors from around the world compete in their respective divisions in hopes of being crowned a “Royal Champion” and this year one of our very own local farms did so. Fieldstone Farm, owned by Chris and Shannon Smith, showcased their 3-year-old filly, Abbey Road FF winning the prestigious Governor General’s Cup in a large field of 24 horses, a class that is open only to Canadian bred and born three year old horses. This is quite an accomplishment considering the Royal is the #1 rated indoor horse show on the continent! To qualify for the Governor General’s Cup the three-year-old Canadian bred and foaled horses have to qualify first by earning enough points to attend the Royal for the Cup classes. Once they have qualified, they are judged on 50% conformation/type and 50% on movement, their suitability to become a sport horse, which is defined as a horse that is capable of excelling in the hunter, jumper, dressage or eventing disciplines. Fieldstone Farm breeds only one or two horses a year ~ breeding for quality not quantity and to date has been very fortunate to have bred three horses that have won the prestigious Cup classes at the Royal. Abbey Road FF is aimed for the hunter ring; Chris and Shannon have huge hopes for her there and are looking forward to watching her career blossom. With another filly on the ground, Eye Candy FF, (who is also from Heartbreaker Heff, a grand champion at the Royal herself in the Thoroughbred classes just two years ago), Fieldstone Farm will be keeping busy as they are preparing her for the Cup classes in three years along with another hopeful on the way, coming in July 2015. Shannon and Chris know it’s a lot of hard work but are both grateful and honoured to win this very prestigious award. Pictured above is Abbey Road FF at the 2014 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

be safe this winter Winter is back and so are our hazardous driving conditions. With ice packed streets, cold winter winds and limited visibility, you need to be extra careful when driving in this part of Canada during the winter. Here are some great tips that can help make driving this winter safer for everyone on the road. First of all, as we highlighted in R&R Complete Auto’s editorial, make sure you have your car running to its optimum performance. Snow tires are great, but make sure you have all four matching ones. Pack an emergency kit that includes: non perishable food, water, extra clothing and boots, first aid kit with seatbelt cutter, small shovel and snowbrush, candle in a deep can and matches, flashlight, whistle and roadmaps. Keep in your trunk sand or salt, antifreeze and windshield washer, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, road flares and a towrope. Toss in a warm blanket too. Update your winter driving techniques and practice them before you need them. Check with your local driving schools to see if they run a full day program to help teach you skid control and accident avoidance techniques. Check the road conditions before setting out on your trip. Your weather app will let you add the location you are traveling too so you know what you are headed for. Clear snow from ALL of your windows before you put your car in drive. Blowing snow from your moving car is hazardous to everyone around you plus it impairs your own vision. Make sure you have lots of time to get to where you are going especially if the weather is bad. You don’t want to be in a rush if the conditions are poor. It’s not a good idea to use overdrive or cruise control if the roads are slippery. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged and that you have your car charger with you. Always wear your seatbelt and make sure all your passengers are too. Slow down! Speed is one of the top three causes of accidents today. Follow these tips and you should enjoy a safe and happy winter season!

don’t get stuck out in the cold written by nancy stell
Nobody wants to be stuck out in the cold with a broken down vehicle so here are a few tips that R&R Complete Auto and Tire advises to keep you road worthy this winter. 1. Tune-up... If you are due for one, now is the time to get it done. Don’t wait until the weather gets worse because harsh weather has a way of magnifying existing car problems. 2. Battery... Have your battery system checked to make sure it is working to its best. Once again the cold weather is hard on batteries. 3. Heaters, wipers and defrosters... This is the time of year when you want these working every time, not sometimes. You can put winter wiper blades on and use cold weather washer fluid. Remember, wipers should be replaced every six months. 4. Snow Tires... tires are definitely recommend in our region and to be sure they are still good, check the tire tread depth. Your tire pressure should also be checked weekly during the winter.
24
InOurSpace | Winter 2014
5. Brakes... This is one of the most important safety items and you don’t want them failing in bad weather. Be sure to have them checked! 6. Antifreeze... Clean, flush and replace your antifreeze every two years. 7. Exhaust System... Should also be checked to make sure there are no carbon monoxide leaks which is especially dangerous at this time of year when we keep our windows closed tight. 8. Lights... Your interior and exterior lights should be checked that they are working and that your headlights are properly aimed. 9. Oil and Filter... Make sure you have your oil and filters changed at the recommended intervals. The harshness of winter conditions can definitely cause trouble if your oil is dirty. 10. Keep your gas tank full... Lastly it is recommended that you don’t let your gas tank get under a half tank at all times, as it decreases the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing.

looking back... feature homes written by nancy stell photographed by sonya stell, nancy stell and submitted
In Our Space has had the opportunity to tour some amazing homes in our region since publishing our first issue in the fall of 2010. Now celebrating our fifth season, we are taking a look back at these beautiful homes, sharing some of the best aspects of each with you. Get some great ideas for decorating your own home or maybe for that long overdue renovation you have been dreaming of! Our premier issue featured a huge estate in Limehouse. The gorgeous chandelier hanging over this striking formal living room screams elegance. The warm cream colours of the walls and soft furnishing enhance the deep rich wood floors, trim and staircase and was the theme carried out throughout this beautiful home. Tucked under the prominent staircase is a grand piano, just out of the way so as not to intrude on the conversation area. Woodwork by Ferguson Carpentry.
Brand new, both dramatic and functional, our 2010 winter issue showcased this beautiful home in Acton built by Legend Estates. The hub of the home and often where you entertain your friends and family, this oversized kitchen has a centre island with built in wine rack. Stainless steel appliances, stone backsplash and granite countertops are all offset with the striking dark wood cabinetry. Beautiful and can work in any size kitchen!
Next we feature the ultimate in contemporary design with this modern European Style home situated in the historic downtown Georgetown. Ultra clean lines, simple and industrious blend of textures pull together this open concept space combining style and functionality. Who says ‘black’ isn’t a colour? Its use in this home makes the space pop and you too can utilize it in your home to make a statement. Spring 2011 issue.

InOurSpace | Winter 2014
The summer 2011 issue featured an amazing home in Belfountain that was inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and on the market through Jim Wallace of Sutton Headwaters. Natural stone is showcased in this home both in the kitchen and the indoor pool areas. In keeping with the natural colour of the stone, the floors, cabinetry and granite countertops compliment it so as not to overtake the space. If done to scale, you too can create a warm and inviting space utilizing this natural look. Ross Hughes of Royal LePage and Tanya Hughes of Pear Home shared their beautiful century home in Orangeville in our 2011 fall issue showcasing Tanya’s flair for design and style as the inside was transformed into a modern living space. Painted wood cabinetry accented with dark painted walls, and clean modern furnishings created this comfortable family room and showcased the vaulted ceiling and oversized picture window.
The Town of Mono offers some of the most picturesque countryside in our region and this beautiful home was no exception. Our winter 2011 issue highlights another home that was on the market through Jim Wallace of Sutton Headwaters and offered everything the discerning buyer would want including this beautiful entrance to the lower level wine cellar. Custom wrought iron gates combined with the rustic wood door and ceiling beam, rough stonework and bistro set all creating the feel of a real French winery.

Denise Dilbey of Royal LePage shared this beautiful home in the quaint hamlet of Ballinafad in our spring 2012 issue. Once again the custom kitchen utilized the dark wood cabinetry with a natural stone backsplash and rich granite countertops. Crown moldings, spotlights and stainless steel appliances created an elegant and functional kitchen.
The 2012 summer issue found us in Caledon Hills as Jim Wallace of Sutton Headwaters, once again shared this unique country property where the home was built atop a functional barn that housed the owners’ angelic horses. The open concept living encapsulates the rustic charm of exposed wood beams and this centre-designed living room, with a two story vaulted ceiling, is a whopping 35+ feet by almost 20 feet. The Forks of the Credit is another sought after area in our great region and Paula Mitchell of Royal LePage brought us this prominent custom-built log home for our fall 2012 issue. This post and beam log home was built from the finest hand picked Douglas Fir and white pine logs that both insulates the home from the cold in the winter as well as protects it from the heat in the summer. Strikingly gorgeous, this home blends nicely with nature’s backdrop.

Blending styles was the focus of this 23 year-old home that was renovated incorporating modern contemporary with the warmth of wood and stone. The master suite once again utilizes the simplicity of paint creating a focal point simply by using a dark colour. Modern furnishings including this circular tub were prevalent throughout. Brought to us by Peter Bowers of Moffat Dunlap in our winter 2012 issue. Custom built homes are found throughout our region and this one was a culmination of Greg Patton and his team at GP Carpentry. Trending, the vaulted ceiling and open concept living space with a double side two-story floor to ceiling stone fireplace is used to define the great room from the den. When choosing simple décor, the more predominant multi coloured hardwood makes a statement as featured here in our spring 2013 issue.
The summer of 2013 Gillian Vanderburgh of Royal LePage shared our first “man cave”. A huge three car garage boasting 1800 square feet complete with heat, hydro and water. Room to store all of your year round toys and an upper level where you can party the night away. Every mans dream come true!
The fall 2013 issue reminded all of us how much we enjoy our outdoor living spaces. This country home located in the Town of Mono and listed for sale by Gillian Vanderburgh of Royal LePage, highlights how functional your wrap around porch is when fully covered protecting you from the elements. Spindle railings and bloom filled hanging baskets add character and style to your home. InOurSpace | Winter 2014
33
Bold red walls with contrasting white trim continues to be a popular choice and this beautiful home just outside of Orangeville and once again brought to us by Gillian Vanderburgh of Royal LePage in our winter 2013 issue, shows how dramatic your effect can be when you also paint the ceiling. Gorgeous! ...and offset nicely with the original hardwood flooring. Open concept living spaces are still a popular choice and this home brought to us by Lori Wedgewood of Royal LePage, also in our winter 2013 issue, illustrates how to utilize your furniture to provide clear definition within the room. The architecture of the home incorporated vaulted ceilings with skylights, exposed rustic beams and a floor to ceiling stone fireplace that creates the focal point for the room.
This hobby farm just east of Orangeville combined some of the old with some of the new styles. Combining rich wood paneling with hardwood flooring, note the uniquely contrasting stained slats that define a border around the dinning room table. The full stonewall fireplace adds a focal point to this rustic dining room. Brought to us by Jim Wallace, Sutton Headwaters in our spring 2014 issue.
Maria Britto, now of Bridlepath Progressive Real Estate, shared this immaculate home in Halton Hills where the formal dining room was like taking a trip to Paris as the full wall mural depicted a boardwalk right from the city of love. Adding to the elegance of this room is a coffered ceiling and pot lights that help to create the mood.

InOurSpace | Winter 2014
The 2014 summer issue showed off a gorgeous circular staircase with dark stained stairs and contrasting white pickets, a popular trend these days. The wall behind the stairs is accented with three cut in’s complete with pot lights so you can showcase interesting pieces of art. Brought to us by Cindy Ness of Royal LePage.
And our most recent issue, fall 2014, Jacqueline Guagliardi of Royal LePage shared with us this mega estate, a Shangri- la that spans a whole concession in the Town Of Erin. Four separate farms, this vast estate offers gorgeous grounds including a spring fed pond, manicured gardens and tree lined driveway leading up to this custom built home.
We thank all of you for sharing these beautiful homes with us! InOurSpace | Winter 2014

you need more than a goldfish written by sonya stell
For elderly pet owners, who often live alone or in group facilities, pets can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, increase social interaction and physical activity and help them learn. “A new pet can stimulate someone to read up on an animal or breed, which can be very mentally stimulating and important at that age,” says Dr. Katharine Hillestad, a veterinarian with the office of Doctors Foster and Smith in Rhinelander, Wis., which provides online advice and retails pet supplies and pharmaceuticals. Pets provide other intangibles. “Dogs—and other pets—live very much in the here and now. They don’t worry about tomorrow. And tomorrow can be very scary for an older person. By having an animal with that sense of now, it tends to rub off on people,” says Dr. Jay P. Granat, a New Jersey psychotherapist. And pets can reduce depression and lessen loneliness. “Older pet owners have often told us how incredibly barren and lonely their lives were without their pet’s companionship, even when there were some downsides to owning an active pet,” says Linda Anderson, who with husband Allen founded the Angel Animals Network in Minneapolis. The couple speaks about the joys of pet ownership and has authored books. In Angel Dogs: Divine Messengers of Love (New World Library, 2005), the Andersons tell about Bonnie, a golden retriever Marjorie and Richard Douse adopted, which became an indispensable family member. “We never felt alone when Bonnie was in the house. As we aged and tended to go out less, she provided us with loving companionship,” the Douses say in the Anderson’s book.
36
InOurSpace | Winter 2014
Psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld, who brings her golden retriever mix Sandee to her New York City office, has even witnessed her ability to rev up elder owners’ memories. “I’ve seen those with memory loss interact and access memories from long ago,” she says. “Having a pet helps the senior focus on something other than physical problems and negative preoccupations about loss or aging.” Pets benefit, too, particularly when older folks adopt older pets. “These lucky pets go from the pound to paradise. Since most of the adopters are retired, they have lots of time to devote to a previously unwanted pet,” says Chicago veterinarian Tony Kremer, who with his wife Meg operates Help Save Pets—Humane Society, which operates adoption centres. It is because of the positive impact pets have proven to have on our aging population, many Assisted Living Communities have begun to integrate pet therapy and allow for residence to bring their pets with them. It has been proven that pet ownership for our older population helps reduce depression, stress and anxiety. It also encourages routine exercise and provides protection for the senior living alone. When you have to feed and care for your pet it helps give you a sense of purpose, especially important as you get older. Providing unconditional love, pet ownership is immeasurable when it comes to improving the overall quality of life as we age.
the art of de-cluttering written by nancy stell information provided by brenda alderdice of downsizing diva

Today there are many options available to us when it comes to getting rid of what we often consider “good stuff” and Downsizing Diva’s will actually come in and work with you to do it! From holding an in-home contents sale to taking the items to your local consignment store or simply making donations to places like Value Village who will resell your items, raising the money for charity. There are all types of clutter that we accumulate. As noted from the very popular book, The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, there is nostalgic clutter, conservation clutter, bargain clutter and the list goes on.
Living a de-cluttered lifestyle has many advantages including to help avoid unforeseen accidents, the emotional relief that “the job is done” and leaves you with more time for quality time with your family rather than managing household affairs. Now here are a few True Confessions – Diva-style that Brenda provided. Answer these questions honestly and tell me, do you need a Downsizing Diva today? - I have a copy, plus back up for every Income Tax Return I have ever filed. - In the basement or attic, I have unopened boxes from my last move. - I subscribe to magazines that I don’t even have time to read

The Kumon Method “At Kumon, our math and reading programs help children of all ages and levels become eager, independent self-learners. Unlike tutoring sessions, Kumon helps children learn how to learn on their own, and develop strong academic skills. Our students gain a sense of confidence that will help them in the classroom and beyond. Each time our students tackle and overcome a new challenge, their confidence grows, and they realize they are achieving more than they thought they could. Kumon puts them on the path to becoming the confident, independent, self-reliant people all parents’ hope their children can be. Whether you realize it or not, everybody uses math on a day-to-day basis. Shopping to calculate change and tax, cooking to modify amounts in the recipe, arrival and departure times when travelling and even the homeowner uses it when planning renovations. Many jobs require a sound knowledge of math including trades people, sales people and accountants to name a few. Today’s employers want people with the ability to reason, work with technical equipment and communicate their thoughts with other employees and customers. Therefore a solid math foundation is essential. As well, by encouraging a love of books early, parents can help their children develop inquisitive minds, full of purpose and imagination. The Kumon Reading Program aims to cultivate a high level of reading ability, while introducing a variety of literature to children. Through continual study and practice, children develop skills that lead to critical thinking. The Kumon Method has helped millions of children achieve more than they ever thought they could and believe they can help your child too. Don’t wait until your child has fallen way behind, now¹s the time for Kumon.

Which one is best for you? Some people believe it is actually easier to learn to snowboard; however, a little more painful as the injury rate in learning is higher than skiing. Harmony At Home With Your Pets Pet ownership is gratifying, but there can be times of frustration and while I solve problems for so many pet owners I forget about applying those solutions to problem situations in my own home. Take Tabitha my tabby who likes to leave puddles in the bathroom and office. She is a happier cat now that she has her laser therapy session, but if I take her a day late I will find a puddle. Well I now have Shields® hidden in the problem areas and when she tries to go there her collar gives her a beep and then it vibrates. She turns and scurries away to the litter pan…. hurrah! If I had these solutions years ago I might still be putting up a Christmas tree. I gave up when the cats climbed the tree and our old beagle tried to eat the treats. Wireless and discreet, ours Shields®Avoidance Solutions are a quick and easy way to safely teach your pets to stop the behaviours that upset you, bringing harmony back into your home. Our new Micro Shields® protect specific household items, while the traditional indoor Shields® protect entire rooms, and outdoor Shields®protect furnishings and landscaping. After a few short training lessons, the only thing that you’ll notice are the results— better behaved pets that stay out of trouble and remain healthy. Did you read about the pooch that ate 42 socks and needed emergency surgery? This would be the perfect solution to keep that pooch safe. It is also the perfect solution to keep your indoor kitty safe in the house when a guest arrives and opens the door or when your pooch runs to the door to jump on the guest. A Shields® Avoidance Package would be the best Christmas present ever for the busy pet owner you know.

sharing the christmas spirit written by sonya stell
Many of us think of Christmas as a time for the youngsters, as they write letters to Santa Claus explaining how they have been good all year round and then await to see what he brings them on Christmas day. Though, Santa is a busy man, working throughout the year to bring each child a special gift; sometimes he can forget our aging seniors. Tracy Haworth, founder of Senior Santa Christmas Hamper Drive program ensures that even the elderly folk get to enjoy the Christmas spirit. During the first year this program started, Tracy discovered that over half of the seniors within our region were left alone during the holiday season, some with no family left and others with a family who had sadly forgotten them. Tracy knew that this just was not right.
Every year, the goal for Senior Santa Christmas Hamper Drive is the same: to give back to our seniors. They collect new unused items from sponsors, donors, community, local business and more that are targeted especially for seniors. They then put together special gift hampers for them to be donated to at least five facilities, seniors centres, homes and shut-ins. This program shows the seniors that Santa has not forgotten them and that you are never too old to believe. They work together to make their case known, to reach out to other groups and individuals who share their vision. So this year, lend a hand or make a donation and help them prove to our seniors that there is a Santa Claus and that no senior is left alone or forgotten during the holidays.
In 2010, she launched this amazing program in Orangeville. Tracy and her big-hearted family started to make sure that everyone had a bright and merry Christmas. With her mission being: to make sure absolutely no senior in our local long-term care facilities, homes, centres, senior services, etc. were not forgotten during this very special time.
It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a whole community to care for our seniors. It is as easy as putting in one additional item in your basket when you are shopping or simply making a cash donation. Show that you care and support the seniors; make Christmas a special day and not just another day for over four-hundred seniors in our area.
This year the support is even bigger and better than ever! With a lot of help from more of our fantastic community members, the Senior Santa Christmas Hamper Drive will be sure to reach every senior in the Orangeville and Shelburne area.
For more information on this amazing cause and to find our more on how you can donate to the seniors, visit the Senior Christmas Hamper Drive at www.seniorsant.ca or call (519) 341-4581 or email seniorsanta@yahoo.ca
Now reaching over four-hundred seniors, you can well imagine the helpfulness from the community is greatly appreciated. Are you interested in contributing to this great cause? You can find a list of items on the “shopping list” or donate cash and the Christmas elves will do the shopping for you. Every single little bit helps.
The homes and facilities they are sponsoring this year, include: Avalon Care Centre, Bethsaida Retirement Home, Dufferin Community Living, Dufferin Oaks Long Term Care Facility, Meals on Wheels, Family Transition Place and Shelburne Retirement/Nursing Home. *Subject to change. Each year they accept donations until December 20th. InOurSpace | Winter 2014

The Occasion: A Wedding

New etiquette: Cocktail dresses are always in style, but you have other options.
What to wear: Let the invitation, the season, and the hour be your guides. (If you’re at a loss and you’re close to the bride, ask her what’s right; otherwise, consult the maid of honour or the bride’s mother.)
What to wear: These days, a cocktail party can be anything from a swanky society affair―cue that glittery knee-length number from the “special occasions” department―to a low-key group of friends gathered around a platter of crudités. But for the most part, “cocktail parties are dressy-casual, so you can’t go wrong if you wear a top with some special details and a skirt or tailored pants, plus heels or fancy flats,” says Williamson. “Avoid fabrics that are too casual, like chino, jersey, and denim.”
“For day weddings, which tend to be more casual, steer clear of anything heavily beaded or sequined,” says Lauren A. Rothman, founder of Style Auteur, a fashion-consulting firm based in Washington, D.C. Instead, opt for a knee-length dress in a material like cotton; in warmer weather or regions, strapless styles and open-toed shoes get the nod of approval. “Simple hats” also earn a thumbs-up, says Amy Lindquist, head of Lindquist Fashion & Image Consulting, in Minneapolis. If the ceremony is in the afternoon and the reception in the evening and the invitation doesn’t specify dress, assume the event is semiformal, which calls for a cocktail dress or an evening suit in a color that won’t upstage the bride. “Pale pink is OK―hot pink is not,” says Lindquist.
The Occasion: A Dinner Party Old etiquette: A little black dress and heels. New etiquette: Gauge your outfit by the party.
Black tie once meant floor-length gowns. Now, at all but the grandest affairs, dresses as short as knee-length are acceptable, provided they have a semiformal or formal cut and fabric; silk or a silk blend, for instance, would be appropriate. As for wearing a strapless or sleeveless dress in a house of worship, some have strict rules about covering up; check the protocol beforehand or bring a wrap.
What to wear: Given the number of variables (what time of year is it? who are your hosts? is it a special occasion?), there’s no one right answer, which can make things a bit tricky. If you underdress, you risk offending your dinner companions. Overdress by a mile and “you can make your host feel inadequate, insecure, or uncomfortable,” etiquette authority Sue Fox points out.
Should you be invited to the rehearsal dinner, “they vary greatly in formality, so note where it’s being held,” says Lizzie Post, an etiquette authority, an author, and a spokesperson for the Emily Post Institute. In general, “cocktailparty rules apply,” Joseph Williamson, a fashion stylist in New York City. “Save your better outfit for the big day, but wear something dressy to the dinner. A dress and a jacket or a cardigan with some sparkle would be nice. But keep it understated.” Remember―there’s only one shining star at matrimonial shindigs, and it’s not you.
The solution: “Ask the host for advice,” says fashion consultant Lauren A. Rothman. It’s the best way to find out if you’re in for a denim-welcome get-together or a more buttoned-up, skirt-and-blouse affair. Still worried about hitting the mark? “Stash dangly earrings or a pretty scarf in your bag to dress up an outfit if need be,” advises etiquette authority Lizzie Post.

spotlight: noah brown bridal boutique written by sonya stell photographed by sonya stell
Why should we automatically assume that men need tailored, fitted clothing and women are just supposed to fit into something off of the rack? It just doesn’t make any sense. Women come in all shapes and sizes too; some of us are lucky enough to fit into the majority of clothing unaltered, but some of us don’t. This is why Noah Brown Bridal Boutique is a full service boutique, offering alterations so you can walk out the door with the perfect fit. How it all began: Rita Auburger, a graduate from International Academy of Design, established the Noah Brown Bridal Boutique in 2003. With an extensive amount of sewing and design experience from working as a costume designer around the world and some impressive wardrobe award winning films, Rita has the knowhow and passion to create this unique boutique. After starting a family, with the birth of her Son “Noah Brown” Rita took a new fashion direction; she sewed out of her home for Toronto fashion designers and created a line of 100% silk corsets and bags with the “Noah Brown by Rita Auburger” label. She moved forward, developing a baby line called “Noah Brown Mini Collection” filled with an earth-friendly line

the best from fashion week written by sonya stell
Spring may seem far away, but these gorgeous makeup trends will be on all our faces before we know it. Start practicing now as we present the most wearable, flattering, and flat-out gorgeous makeup trends from the 2014 Fashion Week season. Soft Berry Lips: Michael Kors gave lips a believable berry shade courtesy of Michael Kors Lip Lacquer in Dame. At Joie, artists kicked up the colour with a brighter berry to perk up minimal makeup.
winterized hair written by sonya stell
From hat head to dandruff and flyaways to split ends, winter can be one of the most hazardous seasons for your hair. Why? Blame the humidifiers, heaters and all of those things we turn on in cold weather to keep us warm. They zap moisture from our immediate surroundings and thereby our locks, making them prone to dryness induced damage.
Bright Orange Lipstick: It seemed like orange was the lipstick shade of the season, with no shortage of designers opting for various hues in the colour family. We spotted it at Nanette Lepore, Donna Karan, Prabal Gurung, Christian Siriano, Rag & Bone, and DKNY. To get the look at DNKY makeup artists mixed Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Lipstick in Electric Orange and Neon Red. Mix on the back of your hand, apply, and then blot for a slightly matte finish. Blue Eyeshadow: At Marc by Marc Jacobs, models wore a stunning statement lid in rich, solid blue from lash line to crease. The colour was created with Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Colour in Ice, patted onto lids, creating a crescent shape just above creases and topped with a layer of Curacao (from the Shiseido Eye Colour Bar Compact). At Badgley Mischka, powdery blue shades were layered to create a disco-like look.
To help get you through this season without experiencing a six month long bad hair day, we are giving you some tips on how to prepare your hair for winter. From lathering on conditioner to changing your routine, here are some of the best and most practical hair-care tips: Bring back the moisture... Use a deep moisturizing mask at least once a week to replenish your hair, as well as seeking out a richer shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and healthy. Cut back... Prevent split ends by getting your hair trimmed regularly; in between cuts utilize a split-end repair product to preserve your hair. No more heat... Blow-drying and heat-styling tools contribute to hair breakage. Be sure to condition and protect your hair prior to blow-drying and heat-styling. Also, give your hair a break some days and go o’natural. Keep it smooth... Your hair can turn into a disater on a blistery winter day, keep a smoothing cream or hairspray handy to keep your locks smooth throughout the day. Resist the dullness... The effects of dry, cold winter can also affect your hair colour, leaving it limp and dull. Prevent and protect with products for coloured hair to revitalize and add shine. Plus, visit your stylists every other month or so to receive a deep conditioning treatment. The key to all of these tips is to keep your hair protected, but stay stylish! With Christmas parties, New Years celebrations and Valentine’s dates awaiting you, make sure you don’t keep your hair hidden away during this festive time. Use products that keep your hair healthy, but don’t weigh you down so you can enjoy this season without a permanent bad hair day. InOurSpace | Winter 2014

special spot: family transition place written by sonya stell and nancy stell
It takes a village to raise a child, and a community to solve a problem. Today, more and more of society is realizing that any form of abuse is a heart wrenching, absolutely horrible experience faced by many innocent women, men and children everyday. The Family Transition Place located in Orangeville has a vision to provide services to women and children who have experienced abuse.
situation. Second stage housing is another option available through the Family Transition Place, this is available to abused women and their children who need affordable housing while getting back on their feet. An abused woman can apply for second stage housing regardless of whether or not she stayed in the emergency shelter. Visit www.familytransitionplace.ca and click on “Programs & Services” for more information.
“We know that abuse has wide ranging impacts on peoples’ lives in the community and society in general, so we aspire to: a community free of abuse where all women, children and men are treated with respect and equality, and live in healthy relationships within their families” says the team at Family Transition Place.
With many more services to help those in need of recovery, including: individual and group counselling, sexual assault counselling, counselling for men, workshops and community awareness; the Family Transition Place is continually advocating safety, support and hope. If you would like to receive any help or donate to this wonderful cause, visit www.familytransitionplace.ca to see how you can help them or how they can help you.
Their mission is to be a leader in the work to eliminate domestic abuse, by supporting women, children, men, their families and the community; this includes: providing a welcoming, safe shelter for women and their children, counselling those who have experienced abuse and its associated impacts on a person’s wellbeing, educating to promote healthy relationships and end the cycle of abuse, advocating for systemic change and providing
responsible stewardship of our resources and our community’s goodwill through accountable and transparent processes. At the Family Transition Place, they value the safety of all individuals and recognize that women and children are the most vulnerable within our society. As well as valuing the right of all persons to live free from violence and abuse, the ability of women to be in control of their lives and make informed choices, and the respect and dignity throughout the healing process and life’s journey. They also deeply value hope, with education and prevention as tools to end abuse in our community; valuing individuals, communities, organizations and governments who actively work towards healthy relationships free of violence, and the hope of elimination of systemic barriers to equality and independence. This is a safe place for all women and children; with an emergency shelter that is safe and comfortable. Providing women sixteen years of age and older, as well as their children with food and other essentials. Offering assistance with transportation and childcare, advocacy and accompaniments to appointments and court, individual and group counselling, and followup support after your stay. Help is just a phone call away, if you would like more information about their shelter call (519) 941-HELP or (905) 584HELP or 1(800) 265-9178 to speak with the counsellor on duty about your
Abuse is becoming more and more prevalent in the eyes of the community and media; well known entrepreneur and co-star of Dragon’s Den, Arlene Dickinson posted an informative video by Jackson Katz on her facebook page earlier this fall. This video shares why Jackson believes that violence
against women is as much a man’s issue as a woman’s. When you have a moment, please scan the QR code above and take the time to watch, sharing with your sons, daughters and families. Today, our understanding of domestic abuse is far greater than it once was. We realize it is a learned behaviour, which is often passed down through generations of abuse; fathers abusing their children, both boys and girls, and teaching them as young adults to either become abusive or being abused is a part of a “normal” relationship. This is why Family Transition Place is not only a shelter providing a safe place, but also an education resource for our community; with programs geared to both our youth and adults. Educating the young, the program is offered to children in grade five through twelve, teaching them what healthy relationships are all about. Since inception in 2001, over 36,000 students in more than over forty schools have benefited from these skill building and attitude changing programs. The Family Transition Place is centrally located at 20 Bredin Parkway, Orangeville as well as having two satellite offices found at 18 King Street East, Bolton and 167 Centre Street, Shelburne. These much needed services rely on the donations they receive from the community, so give the gift of hope and make a donation.
