if the walls could talk
written by nancy stell and dufferin county museum photographed by bohdan chreptak
Dufferin County Museum’s main exhibit this year is showcasing the architectural beauty of the region through historical photography and rare artifacts. “If the Walls Could Talk” will take you down memory lane recounting the days of yesteryear when the whole town helped raise the barn and how Zina Street was the home of the County Jail that opened in 1881. Opening April 4th and running for 2 years, the exhibit will fill the 25 exterior cases on the main level of the museum. Broken down into themes, sharing the stories that make up this incredible county. The buildings change over the years and many lives and generations with lots of stories have passed through creating a rich heritage that is shared through interactive experiences, great photographs and rare artifacts. What provoked the exhibit: The interest in house histories; for a fee the museum will research and create a package with historical information on the home you have purchased. The package includes: pictures, antidotes, stories, newspaper articles and a bound description of who lived in the house. The excitement of the recipients is demonstrated by their anxiousness to review the information before they even leave the museum. Everyone is really interested in learning about the history of this amazing community. An exhibit that has something for all ages and something for everyone to enjoy, for more information visit: www. dufferinmuseum.com. Here is a peak at what you can expect to see and learn: Gillespie’s Dairy Sign (A98-004-1-1 D) The original “Orangeville Dairy”, commonly called “Webb’s Dairy” was located at 21 Broadway, at the foot of Purple Hill. Fred Webb and his family rented the property and in 1915 opened up his dairy business in the back of the house that same year. It became a thriving business and by 1921 the demand for his milk exceeded the output of his cows so he began purchasing milk from local farmers. When Fred Webb Sr. decided to retire, he sold the business to Arthur Gillespie in 1932 who then moved into the Webb house on November, 30 1932. Art changed the name to “Gillespie’s Dairy, Orangeville”.

Queen’s Hotel Plate (A214-180) The Queen’s Hotel on Broadway was built in 1871 by John and Henry Crozier. The hotel offered first class accommodation for travelers and guests, a free bus to and from the train station, commercial rooms and every convenience for a first class hotel including good stabling. The Croziers remained the proprietors until 1883. The Queen’s Hotel was one of the foremost hotels in Orangeville for years and survived, even under prohibition which lasted in Orangeville from 1910 until the 1960s. Miss Winnifred Bennett purchased the Queen’s hotel in 1917 and re-opened; the owner had failed to comply with a notice to have the building re-wired and had reverted to coal lamps. It is believed the hotel closed for a short while for re-wiring. There were a series of landlords in the building over the years during her ownership. Winnifred sold the Queen’s hotel in 1941. There were various owners and landlords until 1945 when the name was changed from the “Queen’s Hotel” to the “Blue Bonnet Restaurant” following purchase by the Leonard Greer in May 1945. It operated by Roy and Eileen Gallagher as a restaurant with offices on the upper levels, including Stan Kennedy, a photographer (in 1946). In January 1961 Mr. V L Chapple purchased the building, closed the Blue Bonnet Restaurant and converted it to commercial stores on the ground floor and 2nd & 3rd floors being laid out for offices.

throwing a bash written by sonya stell
Are you planning to throw a bash this spring? With the warm weather just around the corner, there is no better place than to be outdoors. Using your own backyard, you can create a beautiful and elegant setting for your event. Of course, there are some things to remember when hosting an outdoor party, so here are our tips and tricks to help you pull off a flawless celebration. When you envision your perfect party, you are probably picturing a sunny day with the birds chirping, flowers blossoming and a subtle breeze in the air. Cross your fingers. It is always a good idea to prepare for the worst... rain. Consider renting a large canopy or tent to be placed over where your guests will be the majority of the time, or have the inside of your home ready just in case the sky darkens. Depending on what time of day you are to be hosting your event, you will want to ensure there is adequate food for everyone. If you are having your party early in the day, serving your guests lunch (even if it is a light lunch) will be greatly appreciated by all. However, if your event is between lunch and dinner, always make sure that you have some appetizer-like food available, as your guests will get hungry and it also helps to break the ice between everyone. If you are planning to have a complete dinner prepared for everyone - it is BBQ season, isn’t it? - be sure to let everyone know ahead of time so guests don’t arrive with a full belly. Now it is time for decor. Outdoor parties can be very simple to decorate as you have nature all around you, adding to the effect. We suggest that you play up the nature aspect and have fun with it! We have collected some great tips that you can use this spring and summer season to create the perfect ambiance for your bash. Enjoy!

WHAT YOU HAVE: RIBBONS How To Make Them Party-Ready: Lay them across the table in contrasting colours (no need to get the order exactly the same every time) to make a stunning and cheerful tablecloth. Layer them over a white tablecloth for a clean backdrop. WHAT YOU HAVE: FOLDING CHAIRS How To Make Them Party-Ready: Bring out the (bright!) spray paint and give them a makeover. We recommend this fun DIY to turn the ho-hum chairs that’s likely getting dusty in your garage into the perfect, festive extra seating. WHAT YOU HAVE: WATER BALLOONS How To Make Them Party-Ready: Fill them up, freeze them, and use them in place of ice in a cooler. We love this fun and colorful idea, placed in glass containers, they’re far more attractive than ice... and when they start to sag you can just pop them back in the freezer. WHAT YOU HAVE: ANIMAL FIGURINES How To Make Them Party-Ready: Place them in the centre of your table amongst potted plants, rose pedals, candles and other decorative pieces as a centrepiece. This cute idea is so simple, and after the party just bring them back inside. WHAT YOU HAVE: ORANGES AND ICE CREAM How To Make Them Party-Ready: Cut an orange in half, peel away the rind in one solid piece, then place in the freezer. Take them out the next day and scoop one scoop of ice cream or sherbet into the frozen rind. Yummy yummy! This is both decorative and delicious.

swim forever written by sonya stell
There is nothing better than stepping into a beautiful, warm swimming pool as soon as the snow has melted and the warm weather has arrived. Swimming pools are therapeutic, peaceful and a stunning addition to your backyard; for many years we have been enjoying the uniquely designed in-ground and above-ground pools that each shape their own creative design. Last year, in 2014 we saw the rise of infinity-edged swimming pools as they grew in trend for those of us lucky enough to have a property that suited one. This spring/summer season, we are seeing a brand-new trend that encompasses the idea of an infinity-edged pool in an entirely new way: the zero edged swimming pool. Appearing to be somewhat of a magic trick, these zero edged swimming pools have a way of making your pool disappear. People have become awed by magicians disappearing acts, so it should come to no surprise that one of the most popular water features for high-end pools and spas are a vanishing edge. Constructing one of these swimming pools consists of having an expert architectural designer including immense experience in pool construction and design. These slick, vanishing edge pools can be constructed in varying ways. One of the more simpler ways to do so, is having an in-ground pool that appears to have no edge and be level with the surrounding decking. However, some of the more extravagant versions begin with an in-ground swimming pool, appearing to be level with the surroundings, but also includes an infinityedge on one or more sides. An infinity-edge, entails the rear wall(s) lacking coping, in which the bond beam is positioned at (not above) water level. Resulting in an uninterrupted line of site, creating a spectacular effect where
12
InOurSpace | Spring 2015
the water in the foreground blends into the view in the background. This is especially beautiful on properties with a lake, river or ocean background; creating the essence of the water spilling over into the larger. To begin to plan a zero-edge pool, choose a striking site. You must deeply consider where you are going to put this swimming pool in order to create the most breathtaking effect possible. Any site can work, it just may require more work. For example: a steeply sloping site will require special engineering considerations, while a flat site may require elevating the pool above the ground. In addition, builders must consider the view. Although a dramatic background, for instance an ocean, lake or canyon is ideal; any picturesque setting will do. Next, design a catch-all catch pool. The most important component of a vanishing edge vessel is the catch pool, a trough or basin. This is where the water that spills over the vanishing edge is collected and pumped back into the main vessel. If you would like the catch pool to remain hidden, it should be low enough so that it isn’t in view from the prime vantage points. Although, at the same time, it must be deep enough to accommodate overflow without spillage; too much spillage can cause flooding and erosion around the pool and excessive water loss from within the vessel. These swimming pools are stunning and an ultra-unique addition to ones property, though they do require a lot of engineering and design prior to installation. If you have a property that you believe can sustain a zero-edged pool, contact an experienced swimming pool designer and get started on your next outdoor project.

decorating corner written by shelley foord of decor solutions
question: “what size area rug do I need for my living room and dining room?” answer:
If you are considering an area rug under your sofa, the first step is to do a room layout to determine the best placement for the furniture that allows for comfortable conversation. Measure the distance to the pieces and then add on a few inches as it is ideal to have the front feet of the sofa on the area rug. This anchors the furniture both physically and visually. However, keep in mind you don’t want the rug butting up to the walls or fireplace as it will appear too large for the room. If you have an open concept or a large room then an area rug will help define the various areas. For a dining room, in a perfect world the ideal size would allow 2’ of area rug past the table on all sides. It ensures that your chair doesn’t catch on the edge of the rug when you are pulling it in and out. This does not always work out unless you are doing a custom rug, as area rugs generally come in set sizes. The size/angles of the room itself may dictate the size of your rug as well. Another issue to consider is how the rug looks when leaves are added to the table. A general rule of thumb is to have the correct rug for the size the table is the majority of the time.

white on white written by sonya stell
For the past few issues, I have been discussing some renovations within my own home and shared with you my love of bright, bold, in-your-face colours. Which is definitely not for everyone. Another trend, that is completely opposite of colour, colour, colour though still is just as striking, is white on white... on white. This is one of the most simplest trends to follow, as you can have it running throughout your entire home or in just one room. If you are designing a new construction home, choose everything in white and light grey.
- White kitchen cupboards - White/grey stone countertops - Stainless steel appliances - White bathroom vanities - White/grey tiling - Grey stained flooring
Those are the key components of decor, if you would like to follow this classic, yet stunning white on white trend. Next comes the paint, which is very simple: white. Just pure white. No off-whites, tinted whites or shades of whites, just good old-fashion white. And paint everything. Paint the walls, the windows, the doors, the trim, the ceiling, literally everything - just try not to get any paint on the floors. After everything is freshly painted, you are probably going to look into your home and think “it’s so bland and boring. Just wait until the furniture comes in. Sticking with this trend, all of your major pieces should be white (I know, more white). Choose a sofa that is white and has crisp, clean modern
16
InOurSpace | Spring 2015
lines, along with a matching chair; now, here is the most important part: ensure that all of your furniture has stainless steel or metal-looking bases and legs. If you add a nice warm wood tone into this look, you will take away from the white on white effect. The stainless steel aspect of your furniture, hardware and appliances will tie in nicely with a glass and steel framed table. From your dining room to your living room, choose tables from a similar collection with either clear glass or white tinted glass. And keep it consistent. Now that everything is either white, glass or steel, you can have some fun. Add some fresh or faux flowers in decorative glass or stainless steel vases, add a colourful throw or area rug, place some brightly coloured fruits on the table as a centrepiece. These items will POP!! Any colour can be matched to white and grey, though what I find to be most striking, is the combination of white and blue and green. This gives a very natural feel to the room, with grassy greens, ocean blues and you can even add a splash of purple and yellow. The canvas will be blank and it is now up to you to decide on your favourite colour combination. That is one of the best things about this white on white trend, once you have your basics, it is easy to completely change the look of a room by just changing the accented colour scheme.

buying a new home... written by nancy stell
It’s exciting, buying a brand new home that has never been owned by anyone else and being able to choose your own finishes and design, even the elevation! Here are just a few tips on how to navigate the process and how using a realtor can help you to ensure a pleasing outcome in the end.
Don’t expect perfection. Today each step of the building process has been inspected not only by the foreman but the local building inspector. And builders offer warranties, but they can vary. Be sure to read and understand what your warranty covers before you sign the contract.
Unlike negotiating on a resale property, you can’t expect price reductions on new homes as lowering the price on a house will drop the value of other houses in the community, not something the builder will be prepared to do. In fact, homes that haven’t sold for a period of time will likely go up in price at a new home development. Typically what you can expect are concessions in the form of additional upgrades. Things like landscaping, upgraded flooring or appliances may be negotiated into the final purchase price.
The floor plans you’re given aren’t necessarily the final floor plan as they are not required to be an exact representation of what your home may look like. Room sizes are estimates and sometimes the location of outlets will move. Standard fixtures may include a rectangular tub even though the one in the drawing has rounded edges.
When it comes to financing your new home, often the builder uses a preferred lender who is willing to give better interest rates or reduced closing costs. It’s wise to always check with your own lender first to see if they will match the incentive or give you a benefit in another fashion before you switch.

from the expert House of Colour Inc. Remove, replace, refresh!
With the winter months behind us, we tend to accumulate a lot of stuff that fits the decor for the past winter season. When spring approaches we need to implement the three R’s: remove, replace and refresh! I would start with de-cluttering the room, get rid of all of the things that you don’t use and that make the room look untidy. Once that is done, you need to prepare the room for some spring painting. This is a fantastic opportunity to patch holes, dings and nail-pops. Now it is time to choose a new colour and refresh your space; colour selection is often difficult for many people. I suggest picking a fresh and welcoming colour to ensure that you feel good when you enter the room. Whether you are daring and select a bold colour, or keeping it neutral, I always suggest taking the colour stripe card home to see what the colour looks like in your own lighting. After painting, start bringing back items that will help keep the room looking fresh and neat. Remember that less is more when decorating - keep it simple! If this room is an office in your home, ensure plenty of storage for all of your paperwork. Whatever the room will be used for, storage is key. Everything must have a home, it is the only way to keep organized and inviting. For more help with your spring project, visit us at House of Colour in Bolton and learn from our interior decorating and home staging knowledge.

realtors corner written by gillian vanderburgh of gillianv&co.
Home Buyers are very well educated these days and have many tools at their disposal to research Homes and Properties for Sale. Did you know that most buyers spend an average of 8 weeks on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) before calling a Realtor? As the saying goes, “You only get ONE chance to make a first impression”. That first ‘click of the mouse’ or the first image that buyers see on the internet will instantly determine if they choose to pursue the property further. It is imperative that the “second click” of the mouse (if there is one) results in supplementary marketing materials that further hold their interest and meet expectations. Professional Photos, Floor plans and Video tours that accurately and professionally showcase the property are essential.
by the experts A Touch of Class
Having a background in the television industry makes me very comfortable in front of the camera to ensure that what is coming across to the potential buyer is portrayed in the best light. The unique features of the home, the land and the geographical area are showcased with a personal touch. This contributes to that third ‘click’ which has the power to create the intrigue and interest for clients to call, book a showing and “make the drive” (often up from the city) to see the property. Once on site, clients often ask about details they saw in the video – indicating they have recalled things in a more visual way, in addition to the printed text available to them on the MLS listing. Real Estate is a highly competitive industry. When selling your home, it is important to place your trust in full service Realtors who demonstrate enthusiasm, integrity and professionalism and who have the resources to provide top-notch marketing materials.

from the expert The Outside Guy Water and Drainage Problems and Solutions
Your home or property, has an enemy. Water; it can be getting into or accumulating in places that it should not be. However, there are some easy solutions to these problems that will help put your mind at ease. The main defense towards water damage is to direct the water away from your house. First, you will need to make sure your eavestroughing and downspouts are completely clean and free from debris, such as: leaves or pine needles. If this is an ongoing issue, guards can be installed on your eavestroughing as preventative maintenance. After that is taken care of, the rain water from your downspout needs to be directed away from the house. You can do so, by utilizing some four inch round pipe or downspout extensions. Another method you could use, is collecting the rain water within a rain barrel for future use. If you do not keep water away, you may end up with a wet basement, which is a very costly repair. To further defend yourself against water damage, ensure all patios, decks and yards slope away from the house. Check your yard for constant wet areas, if you have one you can use a dry well, French drain or swale to help dry out the area. Keep an eye on your foundation walls for cracks, if you notice any, monitor and repair as necessary. If you are currently having any drainage or water problems, please contact The Outside Guy today. Always remember, a dry home is a happy homeowner.

spring plumbing written by plumb perfect
The sun is shining and spring is almost upon us (I hope!). After a long, cold and challenging winter, it’s a good time to check your home’s plumbing to prevent problems. Here are our top 7 spring tips: 1. Check Outside Hosebibs – When you turn on your outside tap, or ‘hosebib’, for the first time, be sure to go back inside and check to see if it is leaking. A pipe or valve may have frozen over the winter and cracked. We get more calls in spring for leaks and water damage from this. 2. Test Your Sump Pump – Our second most common plumbing emergency. Test your pump by pouring a couple of buckets of water into the pit to see if it turns on and removes the water. Also make sure the pit is free of debris so as not to clog the pump just when you most need it to work. Ensure that the float is allowed to move freely to function correctly. Check the discharge line outside and clear it of any ice, gravel and debris to prevent water from backing up into your home. If you have a battery backup sump pump, check the battery. If you don’t have one, consider getting one installed in case of a power outage which usually occurs during storms. 3. Care For Your Septic – Spring runoff can quickly fill your septic tank and cause backups. Divert runoff water away from your septic tank and field. During an extreme thaw or heavy rains, limit the use of water. Spread clothes washing over a couple of days to reduce overloading the tank. Use a liquid laundry detergent as powdered detergents contain fillers which solidify in the tank. Dryer sheets are recommended as liquid fabric softeners interfere with breakdown of waste. Also, keep the manway cover on to prevent excess water from entering.
40
InOurSpace | Spring 2015
4. Test Your Drinking Water – Most people are unaware that spring runoff can affect their well water. Contaminants are more likely to enter wells during the spring thaw. If your water changes colour or develops an odour, get your water tested. Also seriously consider installing a proper filter and/ or sterilizer in your home to protect you and your family. 5. Look For Leaks – Check under all sinks and cabinets for signs of leaking water. Even a small leak left unchecked could cause mould and water damage over time. 6. Save Your Hot Water Tank – Spring is the perfect time to drain your hot water tank and flush out sediment which causes corrosion, reduces heating efficiency and shortens the lifespan of your hot water tank. 7. Look Up, Way Up – Make sure your plumbing vents are clear of ice, debris and even nests to prevent odour and back-ups. Clear out your gutters and downspouts and check for damage to them and your roof’s shingles. During winter, ice can form in old gutters and lift up shingles allowing water to enter the home making many people believe they have a plumbing leak. If you are unsure or uncomfortable about any of the above, please call a professional. Happy Spring! For more plumbing tips, please visit www.plumbperfect.ca.

One of the most popular looks, yet some perceive it to be one of the most challenging looks to accomplish is: the smokey eye. Here is a step by step tutorial on how I create a smokey eye look:
Begin with the brows: If you are going to the trouble of a complete face of makeup, smokey eyes and heavy lashes, do not forget your eyebrows. Eyebrows frame the face, so if you are wearing heavy makeup and do not pencil in and shape your brows, they will disappear and you will look sickly.
The fascinator’s popularity grew when it was realized that you could wear this lightweight headpiece without ruining your lovely hairstyle or instead of wearing a hat that can create that awful “helmet head”.
Line the lid: Some people prefer to do this last, however if you struggle with eyeliners, it is best to apply to a clean slate where you can fix your mistakes easily. Draw a winged line from the inner corner of your eye, to about a quarter inch down from the end of your eyebrow. You can use a pencil or liquid eyeliner (or combination), depending on your preferences. Start off light: This is one of the biggest mistakes that women will make: beginning with a dark eyeshadow. Yes, we want the overall look to be dark and heavy shadowed, but do not start off with a dark colour. Choose a cream, metallic base colour that is similar to your skin tone and apply it all over the lid. Slightly - SLIGHTLY darker: Now we are going to begin the smokey look. Choose the palette that you are going to be working from, whether it be brown, grey or a colour. Select a medium shade and begin to work it into your crease, fanning the colour out until it lines up with the wing on your eyeliner. Time to get dark: Only now, I repeat, only now can you choose the darkest of the shade you are working in. Slowly begin to blend this into the medium shade you already applied and work your way out, keeping the ends soft and subtle to create the “smoked” effect. Pay attention to the shape of your brow bone, if you shadow the inner part too heavily it will look more like a bruise than a shadow.

Worn most often for formal occasions, the fascinator usually features feathers, beads or flowers and serves as a hair decoration. It always sits at an angle on the head complimenting the look of your hair. A cross between a hair accessory and a cocktail hat, a fascinator with a veil is also quite common. For centuries women have dressed up their hair, but it was Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy who are responsible today for the defining and naming of what we now know as the contemporary fascinator. Kate Middleton, Lady Gaga and even the Red Hatters all are known to sport beautifully designed modern-day fascinators in lieu of the more traditional hat. Light and airy the fascinator transforms any simple cocktail dress into a formal stunner, certain to turn heads. Fascinators easily attach to your head with a comb, clip or band and can be purchased locally at Styling Essentials in Orangeville. Featured here are just a few of the many fascinators that are available this spring. Stop by and pick out one for your next special event and make a fashion statement!
tattooing FAQ’s written by sonya stell
The decision to get a tattoo is a big one, particularly if it is your first. If you are struggling to find answers to some of your biggest questions, here are some FAQ’s designed to help you through the process. What kinds of tattoo designs can I choose from? The choices are nearly endless! You can begin by approaching a professional artist, meeting with a tattoo artist or just doing a Google search and browsing some websites. There is a massive variety, from tribal tattoos to floral patterns. To narrow it down, think about what inspired you to want a tattoo in the first place. Chances are, you saw a tattoo you liked on someone else, so what style was it? What did you like about it? How much does it hurt? When it comes right down to it, this is what most people want to know. Actually, getting a tattoo is not very painful nowadays. You will be able to carry on a normal conversation while getting your tattoo. Of course, depending on your design and location, the amount of discomfort will vary to some degree. Generally speaking, tattooing over a bone, where there is little flesh or fat, hurts a bit more. If you are interested in getting a tattoo, go to a professional tattoo shop where the proper tattoo equipment is used and therefore getting a tattoo is very safe. All professionals are very conscious about the dangers of cross-contamination and infection, so nowadays new needles are used for each and every customer. Most tattoo artists will be glad to set your mind at rest by showing you the unopened package of needles they will be using before the tattooing begins.

leather not pleather written by mi giovi shoe boutique
There’s nothing more I love in the summer than running around in a barelythere sandal. But there’s nothing worse than when those barely-there sandals burn blisters onto your feet. And the chances of that happening are much greater if those sandals (or any shoes for that matter) are not made of real leather. Faux leather, or man-made leather, is a material that looks like leather, but is made by combining different chemicals. The two most commonly used are polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU). In my opinion, neither is good. The materials are given names like pleather or faux leather to make them seem more like the real thing, but the bottom line is that PVC and PU are plastic materials filled with chemicals, including petroleum and phthalates. Ever wonder why your feet burn, sweat, and feel uncomfortably hot in some shoes and not others? It’s all related to what the shoes are made out of. The main reason many shoppers choose man-made leather over real leather is the price. Synthetic shoes are often cheaper than a comparable pair of leather shoes. But since man-made materials have become more popular and acceptable (especially since fake-leather has started being referred to as “vegan leather” – seriously?), designers and retailers have been getting away with charging the same or more for fake leather products as they do for real leather products. So when it comes down to price, would you rather buy a pair of real leather sandals for $60 or fake leather for $60?. The simple fact that I feel more comfortable when I know my feet aren’t surrounded by plastic is the main reason I purchase leather shoes. But there are other benefits as well: Comfort – Real leather shoes allow the feet to “breathe” more than faux leather shoes. Leather also flexes, stretches and molds to the foot, allowing
46
InOurSpace | Spring 2015
it to move more naturally. Faux leather will cause your feet to sweat and feel uncomfortable as it does not allow air to flow as easily through the material. It can also cause blisters or rashes to form on the feet from friction and heat because the plastic materials will not soften with time. Durability - Leather shoes usually last longer than man-made shoes. A wellmade pair of shoes can last many years, especially if taken care of properly. Leather shoes don’t crack or tear as easily and keep their colour much longer, so they’re a much better investment. Since classics never go out of style, it’s a good idea to purchase certain styles in leather, such as black pumps, black boots, and a simple pair of flats. Appearance – Personally, I think real leather looks nicer than faux leather. It holds up to the elements much better (if taken care of properly) and has a more refined look as it ages. It also doesn’t have the plastic-chemical smell that often accompanies faux leather. When shopping for leather shoes, always look at the label. Check to make sure that both the upper AND the lining are leather. If the lining is made of PVC or PU, it defeats the purpose of purchasing a leather shoe because it cancels out the breathability and flexibility of the leather outer. Health Factors-Athlete’s foot is a very common fungal infection that affects your feet, usually on the skin between your toes. It’s especially common among athletes as they wear close-fitting (often synthetic) trainers and do lots of exercise, both of which encourage sweat. However, anyone who sweats (which, after all, is all of us) can get athlete’s foot. Fungi don’t just like the skin of your feet! Apart from your skin, there’s another important part of your feet which is vulnerable to fungal infection and that’s your toenails. Fungi can spread from the skin if you have athlete’s foot and get into your toenails. The big toenail is often first to go, but the infection can spread to other toenails and your fingernails.

summer activities written by nancy stell
The day that the bell rings and the students come pouring out of the school for the very last time, well for at least a couple of months, is a long anticipated moment. Then the summer begins. At first those lazy days at home are much celebrated, after working hard all year on their education. But, eventually even those precious days of doing nothing wear off and our children are left with boredom. So what can you do this summer? Well, just about everything. There are plenty of homebased activities to keep our children busy; and of course, those fun and exciting summer camps that everyone looks forward to every single year. Below are a few different ideas for your children this summer, to keep them with the biggest smiles on their faces! Treasure hunt: Invite over a few our your child’s friends and plan a scavenger or treasure hunt. Use simple household items and hide them throughout your home, your backyard or even amongst your street. Just be sure that you have a constant watch on everyone so that you know they are being safe at all times. Another version of a “treasure hunt” can be a nature hunt. Do some research and see what kinds of rocks, flowers or insects are native to your area. Then take the crew of nature hunters into the woods and help them find and identify the unique things that also have a home in your neighbourhood. Children can learn so much, just by observing the natural world. Finding beautiful rocks and wild flowers to bring home, or watching an ant colony carrying food back to their anthill. Watch the oohs and awes that form over such simple, beautiful things within nature. Bring out the inner artist: Take some of your child’s experiences from the past year and allow them to put their vision on paper. Amazing works of art will emerge from these inquisitive minds. Have fun with various art forms, such as painting, water colour, crayons, pencils, charcoal and anything else your child can get their hands on. This is a fantastic way for them to keep busy and explore their creative side. Art is not just about painting and drawing, there are many art forms that will bring out the inner artist within your child. Playing a musical instrument, singing or even writing music is the universal language that will boost your child’s brainpower, improve their memory and build confidence. Have fun with music at home or sign your child up for a music camp to really gain some skill. Another way to incorporate music into your children’s lives is by dance. Attending a dance camp or just turning on some music and having a dance party, is just one more way to enjoy being an artist. Who knows? Maybe your child will love it so much, they won’t want to stop! 48
InOurSpace | Spring 2015
Extreme sports: If your child is a daredevil and is constantly seeking that “high” of adrenaline, look into some local sports camps that offer some extreme activities. There is a massive variety out there for your child to choose from, so hone in on their interests and help them decide on the best one. Horseback riding for the first time or for just anytime, can be exhilarating and engaging. Your child will learn how to interact with animals, care for them and train them. All while teaching your child the discipline required to ride such a massive animal. With two unique styles: Western or English, see which suits your child best and go have fun! Road biking, mountain biking or BMX can be a new or long-loved sport to participate in this summer. Older children may have favourite trails of their own that they will gladly ride again this summer, but for those who are younger or new to the sport, check out what is available in your regions for summer camps. For those of us who love sports, but maybe not the most extreme of sports, there are plenty of soccer teams, basketball teams, softball teams, you name it! Perhaps try something new this summer and pickup a new sport. Explore: For every family and child, this is an excellent option. Explore the many choices that are available in our regions to help your children to continue to learn while having fun on their summer vacation. Explore the many places we have to find adventure within our regions; take a drive to a small town for the day, go for a hike, try a new flavour of ice cream, and spend some family time. Try a new summer camp this year and see what else there is to be offered. Actually, try a few new summer camps this year and experience as much as you can. The opportunities are nearly endless! Have you ever been to Collingwood or Wasaga Beach? Take a drive and then take a dive at the beach for some quality friends and family time in the nice warm sun. If you live close to there, have you ever been to Orangeville, Erin or Georgetown? Take a different drive and experience the old charm of the downtown cores in these three towns. With like-minded shoppers, these communities are filled with little boutiques and shops that each have their own flavour and style. Remember too, our high school students are looking for community service hours. So what better way for them to contribute and also learn themselves? Be a part of making a child’s summer special this year! Contact the guidance department of your local high school to find out how you can connect with the students that are looking for opportunities to complete their hours this summer season. Your child will make a new friend and a mentor.

let’s race written by sonya stell
Cruise-ins and car shows can be plenty of fun, but if you are getting to the point where you want more and are ready for some adventure, you might be thinking about trying a little drag racing. There are track and drag opportunities everywhere, with bracket races that you can virtually race any car in. You do not need to be competitive, you can just run at test-andtune nights to get your personal best times for nothing but fun. Even if you spend most of your time at cruises and shows, you can hold your head higher when you can put an actual number to your car’s performance. If you are considering your very first project, there are plenty of things to consider. Here are the basics: Which car should I build? Most likely, you are considering using a car that you already have. That is perfect, as the car you love most is the one you will stick with and get the most enjoyment out of. However, if you are starting a new project you have a few things to think about. First, are you looking for style or speed? If you are just racing for fun, you can build any car that you want. If you really want to go fast, choose the lightest car possible with the most aftermarket support. For example: a Fox-body Mustang between the years of 1979 and 1993, or even a 1994 to 2005 Mustang. These cars are simpler to build, very light and will accept any engine you feel like running. The only problem, everyone knows this and so nearly everyone has a drag Mustang. If you would like to stand out or run in the vintage drags, then go for something old and different. If you still want to hit the car shows, a 1950’s car, a rodded Model A or 1932, or any classic muscle car will give the people something interesting to look at. In the world of newer cars, a 19982002 Z28 or Trans Am are great choices, with affordable prices and can be made fast without trying too hard.
50
InOurSpace | Spring 2015
How fast do you want to go? Deciding on your ultimate goal will save you a lot of money throughout the process. It can be very easy to make horsepower these days, and while it sounds amazing to have 800-1000hp, do you really want to commit to the expense of drivetrain components, chassis upgrades and traction experimentation to make all that horsepower worthwhile? Compared to a car pushing 400-500hp, in which you would still be able to use most of the stock parts in your drivetrain, perhaps with bolt-on upgrades. More power means more money, and usually more maintenance. First Steps: Begin with a solidly running car that you want to head to the track with, first thing is to add a set of sticky tires. Without traction you are nothing, so do some research and speak with the professionals to determine which tires are the best choice. There are other options than slicks, that stick just as well and handle better, with the added benefit of being able to drive them on the street. Next, more traction. If you have the power behind you, a stock suspension usually will not be optimal at the dragstrip and may even have issues that can break parts. Moving forward, you have a lot of decisions to make; including: engines, power-adders like nitrous, blowers or turbos, solutions to overheating and broken automatic transmissions, and so much more. If you are truly interested in creating a drag car, whether for fun or as a profession, we suggest visiting an expert in the field to work out a plan and a budget. Our friends at R&R Complete Auto in Georgetown are a full-service automotive service centre, as well as specializing in building and maintaining drag cars. Give them a visit and hear all about Ray and Ruth Anne’s drag racing experiences!

spring driving ready written by nancy stell
As the weather is getting a bit warmer and we can feel spring coming, it is important to get your car ready for the season. Just like how you get your car ready for winter there are things you need to do for spring to take care of your vehicle. Some things you can do by yourself to get your car ready and others that you will need a professional to do. Our recommendations will help your car to run more efficiently, get better gas mileage, and look better. First, it is important to get rid of the salt on your undercarriage of your car. Road salt can damage your vehicle by eating away at its undercarriage. Use a garden hose with, as much water pressure as your system has to loosen winter grime and salt. Secondly, your car will have taken quite a beating during the winter months, hitting all of those potholes can be very destructive. It is important to have your tire alignment checked after winter, while getting your summer tires put back on. And don’t forget, it is recommended to have a tire rotation done roughly every 5,000-10,000 kilometers. This is a relatively simple car care procedure that will extend the tread life of your tires. Tire pressure also needs to be checked throughout the spring months. It is very important to check tire pressure after weather changes. As it changes about 1 pound per square inch for every 10 degrees change in outside temperature, so as the weather warms up you will need to keep an eye on it. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended pressure for your tire, and never exceed that. Wiper blades also need to be looked at as they receive a lot of wear and tear in the winter from all of the snow and ice. You want to ensure your wiper blades are working properly as spring does bring quite a bit of rain. The life expectancy of a wiper blade is six months to a year, be sure to check that the blades are making full contact with the windshield and have not dried out. It’s also a good time to check your windshield washer fluid and top it up if it’s low. Change your oil. If you switched to a thinner viscosity oil for the winter, nows the time to go back to whatever your factory recommends for spring/summer. Some car manufacturers do recommend changing to a heavyweight oil to help the engine perform more efficiently during hotter weather. It is also recommended to change the oil filter each time you change the oil. A dirty filter won’t keep the new oil clean. It is also said that replacing a clogged filter can improve mileage by as much as 10 percent. Other factors to consider getting your car ready for spring are to flush and fill your cooling system, check the radiator and gas caps, and check the battery and spark plugs. 52

It’s now a good time to have your mechanic inspect your brakes, suspension and alignment systems as your brake pads and rotors can be worn down. Your battery has also been stressed with the sub-zero temperatures and only lasts on average 3 to 5 years. So have your mechanic test the voltage and overall health of your battery to see if you need a new one. Finally, it is never a bad idea to give your car a good wash and wax after the winter months. You have probably noticed the dirt and salt build up both inside and out so why not give your vehicle a thorough clean. Give the exterior a good wash with soap and water, and then apply a nice coating of automotive wax to seal in the shine. Clean out the interior by disposing of those wrappers and empty bottles. Remove the floor mats and do a thorough vacuuming and wipe down the steering wheel and dash with a damp cloth. Here is how to properly wash your car to prevent further scratches or scuffs: 1) Park the car out of direct sunlight. This prevents premature drying which can leave splotches on the paint. 2) Set everything you will need near the car. 3) Fill a bucket with water and add car wash soap in the quantity directed on its bottle. 4) Fill another bucket with clean water. 5) Check that all windows and doors are closed tightly and retract the antenna. 6) Hose off the car to loosen and soften the dirt. Do not use a strong jet, as this can rub grit over the paint and scratch it. Try to aim the jet downwards on all surfaces. Aiming upwards around windows may cause water to dribble into the car if there are flaws in the rubber seals. 7) Pull the windshield wipers away from the windshield until they click into their propped position, away from the glass. 8) Soak a large wash mitt or sponge in the soapy water, being certain to wash out any dirt in it, and begin applying it to the car. Do not use a brush on the car body, this will leave little scratches. 9) Wash the car section by section, starting at the top. Rinse out the dirt from the sponge or wash mitt with the plain water frequently. 10) Rinse off each section as you continue to wash the car, keep the entire car wet throughout the process. 11) Once finished, rinse the bottom of the car off and then dry the vehicle with fresh towels to avoid seeing any water spots.

special spot: red hat society written by nancy stell

InOurSpace | Spring 2015
It all began 17 years ago when founder Sue Ellen Cooper purchased a red hat for her good friend’s 50ish birthday. Inspired by the poem, Warning, encouraging women to embrace their life as they grow older in a playful way. The poem begins “when I am an old woman, I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suite me”
With events happening all over the world, large numbers of Red Hatters are traveling to them generating tourist dollars and so much more for the local economy. When you get a few women dressed up in lavish red and purple attire, people turn their heads. Now multiply that by thousands and you have an event happening that will also draw spectators.
Today this international society, recognized everywhere by woman proudly adorning their purple outfits and striking red hats, has had a huge positive impact on women of all race, religion and even age - as anyone under 50 who would like to join wears pink!
Joining is easy! You simply go online: redhatsociety.com and click on the ‘join’ tab. The regular fee is only $20.00 for a member or $39.00 for a Queen and it covers you for a full year allowing you access to all the online tools how to play and connect with women from all over the world. Access the event calendar and see what is happening that you might want to attend. A few local events that we have been told about are:
What is so distinctive about this group? It fits everyone! Whatever your style, whatever your likes, there is a spot for you in The Red Hat Society. Book clubs, fundraising chapters, small groups or large, whatever you like to do you can find a chapter to do it with OR start your own. Creativity and spontaneity, the Red Hat Society connects women, supports and encourages them in their pursuit of fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness. Different from any other society, there are no minutes, no role call, no fundraising responsibilities (unless that is the specific type of chapter you choose to join), just fun-raising... to the point that doctors are now even prescribing The Red Hat Society for woman dealing with difficult issues. With chapters all over the world, the organization is now in about 25 countries and Canada has the second largest number of Red Hatters, second only to the US and Ontario has the most in Canada. Encouraging woman of all ages to embrace growing older, there are even multigenerational chapters where the older women become the mentors for the younger ones. After 17 years strong, the society is also a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the contribution that these women are making to the economy.
April 9th to 26th The Musical Hats is playing at the South Simcoe Theatre in Cookstown. This play is loosely based on the Red Hat Society. You don’t have to be a member to purchase tickets! May 9th is the East Coast Kitchen Party in Shelburne and you can get more information at Pazazz! July 11th is Hoot in St. Jacobs. This is a fun day where nothing specific is scheduled, but all interested Red Hatters congregate on the town just for fun! August 22nd Bev DeNeef is hosting another Red Hat Tea, but you have to be a member to go to this one. Just one of the many events you will find on the event calendar that, as a Red Hatter you have access to once you join. So if your social circle shrinking as you age has disheartened you, the Red Hat Society can change it all. Connect with woman in chapters that have uniquely distinctive personalities of their own… some like to do tea, some like entertainment, some meet weekly while others meet monthly. The options are limitless and remember taking time to play can be one of the healthiest types of medicine you can take, as girlfriend time is very rewarding and very enriching!
