creatures Your garden is more than just a beautiful place for growing flowers, bushes and vegetables; it is a place for many animals to call home. There are over 500 aphid species that can live within your garden and several are common garden pests. Typically, they have pear-shaped bodies and range in colour from black to pink, though most are green and brown. You will see these creatures in the spring, summer and early autumn every year on plant stems, leaves and flower buds. An aphid drinks the plant sap from the flower buds, leaves and stems, though it is lovely to feed these little guys, they can leave your plants looking distorted with weak-looking leaves and shoots. A natural predator that you want to encourage your garden to be home to: ladybugs, as these bright coloured beetles eat lots of aphids and other pesty insects. A great form of pest control instead of using harmful chemicals and are even considered a sign of good luck. Our most important pollinators, which love the urban setting, are bees and buzzing away through your flowers, you will find the bumblebee. These large, hairy bees are generally black with varying degrees of yellow banding. Look closely at flowering plants and you will probably spot several. These social insects live in colonies of up to 200 workers. The workers gather pollen and nectar to feed to eggs that have now emerged into grub-like larvae. Bumblebees are not aggressive and will only sting if they feel threatened. They are important pollinators of many plants and fruiting trees.

of the garden written by sonya stell
Insects may get annoying in your backyard, but you can trust the common frog to catch them with their long, sticky tongue. They will even eat snails, slugs and worms, though young tadpoles only feed on algae. This species is very widespread across the world, and are the most active at night, hibernating during the winter in pond mud or under piles of ratting leaves, logs or stones. They are able to lighten or darken their skin to match their surrounds. Many gardeners love to incorporate plants that will also attract beautiful butterflies such as the Monarch who particularly enjoy milkweed plants. Or the tiny little humming bird that loves to drink from bellflowers and will also eat small insects, which they rely upon for protein. So be sure to go organic, remembering that even some organic pesticides are toxic to bees and other creatures that we need to pollinate our gardens. This summer, watch out for the changing critters within your flowers and plants. Perhaps even plant some garden features that will help feed these little ones. Do not think of them as a pest, but as a guest in your garden for the season.

a destination this summer written by nancy stell photographs submitted by georgetown bia
If you haven’t taken a trip to Downtown Georgetown recently, this summer is the time to do so for sure! The amazing shops have so much to offer with their unique and quality products that you are sure to love. Every Saturday morning from 8am to 12:30pm, Main Street South comes alive with the hustle and bustle of the local Farmers Market where you can meet your friends and chat over a coffee. Local growers have just harvested their goods fresh and ready for you to enjoy that evening on your dinner table. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 11 when the first farm fresh raspberries of the season will be available at this year’s Raspberry Festival. Stop by and say hi to Market Chef Lori who will be on hand whipping up some tasty raspberry treats. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Georgetown Bread Basket.
The annual Rock’N’Roll’N Classics will fill the streets with classic cars from the 1920’s to 1983 in a full on street juried car show all set to great music. Running from 5pm to 11pm, bring the whole family down and stroll the streets listening to the live music of Rolly Rocker and the Hemi Heads while admiring all the oldies. Window shop, enjoy some ice cream and just soak up the overall ambience of the night. On August 22 Grillicious will run from 12:30pm to 1:30pm where you can taste some yummy seasonal veggies grilled to perfection, once again by Market Chef Lori and the proceeds being donated to the Georgetown Bread Basket. If you enjoy the arts, plan a visit to the newest Community Gallery, Red Door Gallery this summer, located at 127 Mill Street. The summer hours are Thursday and Friday, noon till 5pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. Downtown Georgetown: Shop... Dine... Explore... Your treasure awaits you!

say “hello” or “hell no” written by sonya stell
Are you a little unsure about this year’s “Colour of the Year” marsala? Last year, Pantone told us that radiant orchid was all the rage. Now, the colour experts at Pantone are celebrating marsala for 2015 which is somewhere between a dressed up version of terra cotta and a less intense merlot. For fashion, many people can understand it – a nice marsala lip or nail works for autumn or winter just perfectly. But for the home, well that’s a harder sell. Ultimately, you can judge whether or not you’d use it in your space, but these eight tips are a great starting point if you’re a little marsala shy. And who knows, if you are sitting on the fence, by the end of these tips marsala might just win you over.
4. A bold single piece. An eclectic modern space with a bright white base and tons of natural light is a nice place to use marsala as an accent colour. Blue, yellow, orange and red work great with this colour. If you want to use marsala in this way, stick to a single piece and mix in other colours.
1. In a small, bold space. If you live in a charming apartment or home and you love a good global, well-traveled vibe, then marsala can be worked in to your interior if you accent with brass and mix in lots of blue and orange. A space accented with marsala can end up looking like a textile designer, buyer for a great interiors store, magazine editor, stylist, author or designer occupies this space. Someone with class and style.
6. Small Accents in the Kitchen. A tea box, a frying pan, wood stain, or in a rug, mixed with indigo, a hint of mustard, brushed metal and reclaimed wood it really works without feeling dated or bad 1980’s (vs. good 80s).
2. Global + Bold. Marsala needs to be either all or nothing in a room. A simple accent or over-the-top flashy. Be bold and positively soak your space in tones of red, including marsala. Creamy whites and natural woods ground it as do white cherry blossoms, which make the space feel less formal. Textiles, ceramics and art from countries like China, Turkey, Morocco and India include this colour, as it is definitely more common in those countries. 3. Classy with a bit of Hollywood glam. Marsala works in a space where the foundation is neutral and the lines very classic creating an elegant room which feels very Hollywood despite its geographical location. It looks oh so glamourous. What will work here is that marsala is only used as an accent colour, perhaps on the dining chairs. Nowhere else. Flowers in tones of red and purple help the space overall to feel more balanced so there is less of a contrast between the deep dark chairs and the creamy white floors, walls, ceiling, etc.
10
InOurSpace | Summer 2015
5. Rugs. Marsala works in perfectly in rugs, have you noticed? And you can find this colour in so many rugs that are sourced in Turkmenistan, Turkey, northern Afghanistan, Morocco, Uzbekistan and India. And because they’re on the floor, and usually combined with other colours and patterns, marsala becomes a nice stable tone to ground the room overall.
7. With bright primary orange, light grey and red. In a contemporary setting, marsala works great with bright red and orange nearby because both bring heat and energy and marsala neutralizes them a bit. With grey, wow what a winning combo! Makes marsala feel more modern and clear somehow. 8. Artwork. Paintings including the colour marsala, really brings the eye up off of the floor and harmonizes the space from a colour perspective. The room will really be lovely and adding a rug lifts the room making it feel very peppy and even a little sexy! So now it is up to you to decided. Are you going to welcome marsala into your home with a “hello” or a “hell no”? Hopefully, these tips will have inspired you to jump—even a little bit—onto the trendy train this summer, and embrace everything that is marsala.

from the expert Owen Tree & Shrub Care Why tree work?
Ever wonder if your trees need some attention? Or do you just think that it’s a natural wild organism that does its own thing? Trees are like everything else in our landscapes like turf and annual/ perennial gardens. Yes, if you leave trees be, they will all grow and survive but in time will become wild and untamed. Many people don’t realize that trees require the same amount of attention as grass and gardens. There are lots of reasons you should consider having your trees worked on; safety being the most important. Whether it’s a matter of having the dead, dying, or diseased sections of the tree removed, it is important to think of what your trees need. Installing a bracing system could prevent limbs or stems from separating. If the tree is dead or is broken, you may consider having the hazardous tree removed. To encourage healthy growth of your trees is to maintain proper Plant Health Care which can include pruning, deep root feeding, and spraying for pests and/or diseases. It is important to remember how valuable trees are. They offer so much that we take for granted. They clean our air, help prevent soil erosion, aid in our water system, create habitat for wildlife and the list goes on. Together trees create their own infrastructure and in order for our urban forests to flourish we need to work together and help them wherever we can. Consider calling a Certified Arborist to assess your trees. InOurSpace | Summer 2015

To get a hint of what is new for your home in 2015 take a look at the fashion runways. It’s no secret that fashion influences interior design. If you want to mimic some of the newest trends in your home, get bold with patterns and stripes, add warm metallics, and perhaps a punch of colour with seaside blue or another luminous colour. Modern graphic prints with sharply contrasting patterns are adapted for the home by way of patterned rugs with similar contrasts. Brightly coloured rugs can bring excitement to a room. Outdoor rugs also come with beautiful geometric prints to add to your patio. Stripes are making a strong statement this summer with both bold vertical and horizontal stripes. These can also be used in the home as toss cushions, an accent chair or an area rug to bring in a fresh sense of style. Hot for some time now in home design are metallics. They can used on the legs on a table or desk, or perhaps on wall sconces or a mirror. Feel free to mix and match.

Bright colours are also in for fabrics, paint, artwork and accessories. Look for dramatic shades such as blue, purple and ochre as well as cheerful pastels. The dramatic, rich colours work well with lush fabrics. Europeans seemed to have embraced their leather sofas in bright colours such as blue and green. Canadians however; don’t seem as daring yet. We have recently accepted grey, but the traditional brown leather sofa is still the most popular. Don’t be afraid to express yourself!! For hints and tips on how to accomplish this in your space, please stop by and chat with one of our decorators.

ready... set... runway written by sonya stell
At one point, the warm weather seemed oh-so-far away. But now, it is upon us and we are searching for some bright and beautiful trends to inspire our closets this summer. Stores have long cleared out the winter clothing and brought in some new “hot” items that everyone and their uncle will be wearing this summer. Fortunately, plenty of last years trendy outfits will still be wearable this season. Think more crop tops, logo sweaters, sheer and ‘70s influences. So, without further ado, here are the 10 fashion trends that you’re gonna want to get your hands on in 2015: Boho Everywhere Ditch your mini-skirts and tank tops for something a bit more romantic (and comfortable). The new boho look for spring 2015 comes courtesy of designers such as Vera Wang, who sent soft floor-sweeping dresses down the runway; Dries Van Noten, who got creative with funky prints; and Tommy Hilfiger, who dressed his models in hippie looks with a twist. Bridal White For all you brides-to-be who are getting hitched in 2015, this is your lucky year. The spring/summer 2015 runways were filled with a variety of gorgeous white hues on everything from mini-dresses to Victorian-era looks with a modern edge. Designers such as Louis Vuitoon, Erdem and Givenchy gave the spring hue new life in their collections. Fresh Florals Florals? For spring and summer? Groundbreaking. Yes, we know that this trend may be getting a little tired. Fortunately, designers such as Chanel, Marni and Miu Miu offered thoroughly modern florals for the thoroughly modern woman. Think big, bold and unabashedly feminine. Florals: they’re here for good. 24
InOurSpace | Summer 2015
The New Crop Top And we can’t stop...and we won’t stop (wearing crop tops, that is). Sure, Miley Cyrus made crop tops the uniform of 2013 and 2014, but the revealing outerwear of 2015 turns it on its head. Think ladylike and elegant (as seen at Oscar de la Renta), as well as boxy (at Marc Jacobs) and even brunchworthy (as seen at Michael Kors). Crop tops are for everyone in 2015. Sheer, Sheer And More Sheer Let’s face it: sheer fabrics are never going away and thank goodness—not only do they jazz up tops and dresses but they make us feel very summery, which is pleasing. But of course, designers wouldn’t be designers if they didn’t mix things up, which is why labels such as Ports 1961 and Roberto Cavalli led the charge with daring and outrageously feminine sheer looks on the spring 2015 runways. Gingham Is The New Black There’s no doubt about it: gingham is a bold look, but it wouldn’t be summer if we weren’t ditching our cold winter colours for a bright print. Luckily, there’s a gingham for everyone come 2015, in the form of Swinging Sixties mini-dresses, crop tops, power suits and short shorts. Flats And Sneakers Long live flats! Long live sneakers! The spring/summer 2015 collections basically said that heels are dead (RIP) and resurrected flats and sneakers as the go-to shoe of the season. Labels such as Chanel and Peter Som paved the way with their chic and comfortable footwear. (It’s about time.)
jewellery trends written by nancy stell
Do you want your look to be inspired by the high-fashion looks on the runway? Luckily for you, this years trends are just that. We are seeing the glimmering shine of disk earrings, sending a familiar #throwbackthursday to the 70s hoop earrings. Shown here, you can see another fun spin on those hoops... garnished with beading and feathers, you can get that boho look everyone has been searching for. Jewellery worked from raw stones and multiple bead patterns is nothing new, but this year they have become all the rage. Layer a few or just choose one of these beaded necklaces to create a very light and feminine accessory - the polar opposite of last years chunky jewellery trend. However, a toned down version of this fashionista style is on the horizon... we are finding chains in all silver or gold being worn as a single necklace or bracelet, just to add that pop of glam without going overboard. Layering can also help you achieve that “chunky” look without all of the bulk. Try wearing multiple beaded and/or crystal necklaces for a lightweight feel but a noticeable accessory. Fun replica items are another cute addition to your outfits, so far we have seen everything from owls to padlocks (shown here) - talk about a bold statement! Bracelets, bangles, beads galore! The popular look of many, many bangles is still being seen this season. Though, everyone still loves their silver bangles, leather wraps and/or bracelets are also being worn in the “bangle” style. So go ahead and layer them up ladies, there is never too many - well, maybe. For those of us with lengthy fingers and a lot of rings, stacking rings will build a bigger look with lots of small slim styles. This year’s Colour of the Year: Marsala is even showing up on our fingers. Go figure!

But of course with the modern day twist that we all look for, this kitchen offers granite counter tops, an on counter stove top and built in double wall ovens, and a fridge and dishwasher that match and blend into the prominent white cabinetry. Overhead the exposed beams add a nostalgic charm, showcasing perfectly the matte black track lighting that compliments this historic feel. The great room with huge picturesque double story windows overlooks this magnificent property and walks out to a massive deck that wraps the entire home. The natural floor to ceiling wood burning fireplace not only creates an interesting focal point, but also provides ample heat during the cooler autumn and winter days.

keep motoring written by nancy stell
Having a classic car to motor around in during the summer time is a great way to see our beautiful country side, but just because you did everything right when you took your car out of storage this spring, doesn’t mean that your work is done for the season. Keeping up with the regular maintenance, whether you are racing it or just cruising around town in it, is something you need to do to keep it roadworthy all summer long. Routinely checking that all the nuts and bolts are tight, tightening everything that has come loose, and checking for leaks, are all part of the ongoing maintenance you will want to do. If you are a racer and your car leaks oil all over the track, you will be penalized, as it will completely shut down the track for everyone. So take a quick look before you head to the track each weekend. If you can, keep your oldie in a dry garage as it will help preserve the bodywork and paint, plus it will make it easier to start the car. Regular use also helps to ensure that the car will start every time and prevents it from seizing up due to idleness.

InOurSpace | Summer 2015
It’s a good idea to check your tire pressure and all the fluid levels about every 2000 kilometers or before heading out on a long excursion. Make sure that all your lights are working, without daytime runners on these oldies; you want to make sure everyone can see you. If you hear any abnormal noises make sure you take it in and have it checked over. For the car enthusiast who doesn’t want to get oily fingernails, R&R Complete Auto in Georgetown will not only look after your everyday vehicles, but they also specialize in classic cars, with owner Ray Russiani being an enthusiast himself. The season is short and your time is often limited, so get out as often as you can and enjoy your oldies!
RAY’S UPDATE
So far muscle car racer, Ray Russiani, has had three major racing events (by mid-June). On the long May 2/4 weekend, Ray made it into the final three in the Extreme 32 class, racing all day from 8:00am until 11:40pm. In the Top Class, Ray made it to the the final four, being beaten by only 0.00007 of a second. On Sunday, he completed two rounds in each class. Ray is currently standing in fourth place and is greatly looking forward to this race season. We will check in with him in the fall to let you know his final rankings.

fill ‘er up written by sonya stell
Here are some tricks to get more of your money’s worth for every litre: 1. Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A one degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. 2. When you’re filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses
40
InOurSpace | Summer 2015
at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less worth for your money. 3. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. 4. Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

It is considered to be one of the most dangerous sporting events. designtips Using the architectural features of your home to enhance the overall beauty is an attractive way to make your home unique. Featured here are: • Inlayed hardwood floors help to define a space while adding a unique flair to any home. With new computer aided technology, and laser and precision mechanical cutting devices, the costs to have this incorporated into your design are more affordable today. Two options are available as you can purchase thinner inlays that can be added to an existing hardwood floor. • Soaring ceilings add a dramatic effect to the room and incorporating an
oversize chandelier not only fills this enormous space, but can make the space feel more intimate. The rule of thumb is to take the dimensions of your room in feet and add them together. This total number of feet is how many inches your chandelier should be. • Wood trim framing your doorways adds a defining feature to any home, whether the interior is formal or casual. Almost any style casing can be built from a standard stock of inexpensive shapes pieced together. • Kitchen backsplashes can make a statement and used correctly will add a touch of artistry to a kitchen even in the smallest amount of space. Durable and easy to clean, they also help break up the endless arrangements of cabinets.

kitchen revival 101 written by sonya stell
Kitchens are more than just where you prepare your meals. Nowadays, the kitchen is a command centre, dining area, and the one room in the home where families spend the most time together. If you’re looking for a way to spruce up the space, and an overhaul isn’t in the budget, try one of these easy kitchen cabinet upgrades. You can brighten the room with a coat of cabinet paint, add handy storage features like a pullout shelf or a free-standing island, or even build a window seat with stock cabinets—all with some help! Here are 10 of our top kitchen cabinet upgrades, to help you get the job done right. Your cave like kitchen feels that way because the dark cabinets have sucked all the light out of the room. But a brighter makeover doesn’t necessarily mean replacing those gloomy boxes with all-new ones. As long as the frames and doors are structurally sound, you can clean them up and brush on a fresh coat of paint—and within a weekend take that kitchen from dreary to sunny. All you need is some strong cleaner, sandpaper, a paintbrush, and a little elbow grease. What you don’t need is a whole lot of money, as the transformation will cost you a fraction of even the cheapest new cabinets. And that’s news that should sure light up your day. That sweet old woman you bought your house from is truly wonderful— really, she is. But, that kitchen—it’s ugly. What’s old may be new again, but those grease-caked, kid-scratched cabinets have to go. We’re not saying you must gut and rebuild. Instead of spending, say, $5,000 on new cabinets save some serious cash and reface the ones you have for much less. It’s amazing what a little veneer and some new doors can do to brighten an aging space. Both are available through woodworking companies, and some manufactures offer peel-and-stick veneer to make the task simpler. Just be sure to measure twice and cut once. Work carefully, and your kitchen will look brand-new in no time. Make the most of your kitchen’s existing storage space by installing a pull-out shelf in one—or all—of the base cabinets. The shelf resembles a shallow drawer that glides out for easy access to items stored in the back of the cabinet.
52
InOurSpace | Summer 2015
A standard shelf is in a 24-inch-deep by 33-inch-wide base cabinet, but its design is adaptable to virtually any size cabinet. It has a 1x4 pine frame and ¾-inch birch plywood bottom. If you’re only building one or two shelves, you can save some money by going to a home center or lumberyard that sells quarter or half sheets of plywood. And in most cases, they’ll even cut the plywood to your dimensions. There’s a missing element in most Canadian kitchens, and it’s not a $7,500 range or a massive double refrigerator. No, it’s simply good lighting. The hidden fixtures of under cabinet task lighting, which are fairly easy to retrofit beneath upper wall cabinets, bathe the countertop in bright white light—a boon for everything from dicing veggies to reading recipes. Connect the fixtures to a dimmer switch, and you also have the key to dramatic accent lighting or a night-light for midnight snackers. If you’re a bit tentative about working with electricity, don’t worry; there are plenty of professionals that you can bring in to do the job. If you’re going for homey and cozy in your kitchen, skip the built-in cabinetbase island and instead make the central work area a furniture like table with a butcher-block counter. Because these thick wood-slab tops have their edge or end grain exposed, they are stronger than wood laid on the flat. That means they resist warping and nicks better than laminate and almost as well as stone. Butcher-block islands mimicking 19th-century worktables are perfect for toning down the coldness of stone counters and metal appliances in modern cook spaces. You can bring this classic aesthetic to your kitchen by constructing a prep island from easy-to-buy materials or choosing one of the dozens of styles available through retailers and furniture makers. If you are looking to revive your kitchen this summer, but are a little lost on where to begin contact Kitchen Revivall and let them work with you to create an affordable makeover to your homes hub! For more information visit their website at www.kitchenrevivall.com
tips and tricks Outdoor Lighting
The benefits are many, safety and security but also to extend your outdoor enjoyment. Here are some tips on how to augment the exterior of your home with outdoor lighting. • Front Entrance: lights on either side of your front door will illuminate the entrance area and give your home a welcoming look. • Garage: hanging a lantern on either side of the door or a fixture over the centre is also visually appealing. • Pathways or Driveways: use solar powered low level path lights to provide a warm glow and making them safer to walk on. • Decks and Patios: the most utilized space, there are many options using any combination of mini-lights, path lights and lanterns to create the perfect vibe for your outdoor living space. • Pools and Fountains: solar powered floating lights are a striking option for your pools and water features.

Buyers who tire of looking at homes that don’t meet their expectations often consider the option to create their own dream home. Building a home can be a daunting notion but if approached in the right manner can prove fulfilling and satisfying. Establishing the perfect geography and characteristics for your home “on paper” is easy. Finding it, creating it and living in it will take some time. Setting realistic expectations for these timelines and costs is of utmost importance. The Vacant Land you select for your dream home must meet criteria wider than simply ‘looking pretty and feeling right’.

Land in rural areas is often under the jurisdiction of Conservation Authorities and may have Environmental Restrictions. The County and the Municipality set very clear rules that will impact the size and location of the building envelope you imagine. The location of your Well and Septic System will also need to be suitably engineered to accommodate existing soil conditions and proximity to water course systems. Timelines for Applications and Building Permits to develop Vacant Land vary and can be impacted by the time of year. Spring builds, for instance require the ‘half load restrictions’ to be lifted by the Municipality before heavy building materials can be transported. Fully researching your financial options ahead of time is important. Lending institutions have very different rules for Vacant Land purchases and require a deposit substantially higher than when you purchase an existing home. Every choice you consider will impact your budget, so “stay flexible”. For example, making application to have your Dream Home set well back from the road “for privacy” can translate into additional driveway materials and additional cost for the delivery of services (hydro) in from the road. Comprising a team of Qualified Professionals – Licensed Real Estate Representatives, Solicitors, Financial Lenders and reputable Builders with knowledge of the area will help transform the vision you hold for your Dream Home …into a reality. 54

getting to the root cause written by pumb perfect ltd.
Summer is finally here... hot weather, vacations, barbecues and family gettogethers. The harsh winter of frozen and burst pipes is quickly becoming a distant memory. Unfortunately warmer weather doesn’t guarantee you won’t have any plumbing emergencies. After sump pump failures, sewer backups due to roots is the second most common plumbing emergency during the summer months. With lots of rainfall, roots grow rapidly and once they enter a sewer line or septic, the nutrients and water stimulate excessive root growth. Over time they restrict flow and even cause backups. Mechanical rootcutting works well for a blockage but is only temporary as roots grow back more vigorously. Root intrusion can eventually destroy a sewer line or septic system, costing thousands of dollars to repair or replace. If annual rootcutting, sewer replacement or cleaning up after a backup isn’t a way you want to spend your summer time (or money), there is a superior and inexpensive solution on the market today – RootX. RootX is a proven sewer and septic product that provides safe and effective root control. The RootX patented formula foams on contact with water to reach the top of the pipe where 90% of the roots are. Degreasing agents strip away outer grime so the RootX herbicide can penetrate the roots and kill them. The RootX foam dries and sticks to the walls of the pipe acting as a barrier, preventing re-growth. RootX will not harm pipes, septic systems or above ground vegetation. Annual RootX treatments are recommended to keep your system free from further root intrusion. You may choose to apply the product yourself or have a professional application done.
