hings are changing. For centuries the addition of colourants to foods has been considered the norm to improve a products appearance. It is thought to have occurred in Egyptian cities as early as 1500BC, when candy makers added natural extracts and wine to their sweets for added appeal. During the Middle Ages, the economy in the European countries was mainly based upon agriculture, and the peasants were accustomed to producing their own food locally or trading within the village communities. Foodstuffs were mainly regarded as a means to survive; aesthetic aspects were not considered, at least not by the vast majority of the generally very poor population. This situation changed with urbanization at the begging of the Modern Age, when trade emerged - especially the import of precious spices and colours from climatically flavoured countries. One of the very first food laws, created in Augsburg, Germany in 1531, concerned spices and colourants and required saffron counterfeiters to be burned. The onset of the industrial revolution, urged thousands of people to begin to move to the new centres of this industrialization. The act of feeding these workers changed fundamentally; suddenly, they became dependent on foods produced and sold by others. These new urban dwellers demanded food at a lower cost while analytical chemistry was still in the process of development; on this basis, especially with the absence of legal or administrative obstacles, the adulteration of foods flourished. These impure, unsafe and unwholesome foods were driven by the competition among the growing number of food producers and traders in the growing cities. Heavy metal and other inorganic element-containing compounds turned out to be cheaper and suitable to “restore” the colour of watered-down milk and other adulterated food items. At this time, many colour additives had never even been tested for toxicity or other adverse effects. Historical records show that injuries, even deaths, resulted from tainted colourants. In 1851, about 200 people were poisoned in England, 17 of them fatally, which was a direct result of eating adulterated lozenges. In 1856, mauveine, the first synthetic colour was developed by Sir William Henry Perkin and by the turn of the century, unmonitored colour additives had spread through Europe and the United States in all sorts of popular foods, including: ketchup, mustard, jellies, and wine.
added to foods led to the replacement of the negative lists by lists of substances allowed to be used for the production and the improvement of foods. The principle is called “positive listing” and almost all recent legislations are based upon it. Positive listing implied that substances meant for human consumption have been tested for their safety, and that they have to meet specified purity criteria prior to their approval by the corresponding authorities. In 1962, the European Union approved 36 colourants, of which 20 were naturally derived and 16 were synthetic. This directive did not list which food products the colourants could or could not be used in; at this time, each member state could designate where certain colours could and could not be used. In Germany, for example, quinoline yellow was allowed in puddings and desserts, but tartrazine was not. The reverse was true in France. This was updated in 1989, based on further concerns of food additives authorized for use in food items. Currently, naturally derived colours are not required to be certified by a number of regulatory bodies throughout the world (including the FDA), though they still need to be approved for use in that country. Certified colours are synthetically produced and are used widely because they impart an intense, uniform colour, are less expensive, and blend more easily to create a variety of hues. There are currently nine certified colour additives approved for use in North America. Colours that are exempt from certification include pigments derived from natural sources such as vegetables, minerals or animals. Nature derived colour additives are typically more expensive than certified colours and may add unintended flavours to foods. Examples of exempt colours include: annatto, beet extract, caramel, beta-carotene, turmeric, and grape skin extract. And now, within the last few years, things are finally beginning to change. Though these “certified” colourants have been put through rigorous testing, the question remains: how safe are colourants to be consumed on a daily basis? In most countries, they have their own regulations and list of food colours, which can be used in various applications (including food, drugs and cosmetics), though these lists include a maximum daily intake limit. Which raises another question: how much of these synthetic chemicals can you consume before it is considered dangerous?
In the United States, the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 reduced the permitted list of synthetic colours from 700 down to only seven. Even with the updated food laws, adulteration continued for many years and this, together with more recent adverse press comments on food colours and health, has continued to contribute to consumer concern about colour addition to foodstuffs.
Tartrazine Tartrazine is a synthetic lemon yellow azo dye, primarily used as a food colouring. It is know as E number E102, C.I. 19140, FD&C Yellow 5, Acid Yellow 23, Food Yellow 4, and trisodium 1-4-5-3. Tartrazine is currently used as a colour additive all over the world, mainly for yellow, and can also be used with Brilliant Blue FCF or Green S to produce various green shades.
In the 20th century, the improvement of chemical analysis and the development of trials to identify the toxic features of substances

“Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.” - William Arthur Ward asthmatics and those with an aspirin intolerance. Symptoms from tartrazine sensitivity can occur by either ingestion or cutaneous exposure to a substance containing tartrazine. Symptoms appear after periods of time ranging from minutes to 6-14 hours. The prevalence of tartrazine intolerance is estimated at roughly 360,000 people affected in Canada, less than 0.12% of the general population. According to the FDA, tartrazine causes hives in 1 in 10,000 people. It is not clear how many individuals are sensitive to tartrazine, but the University of Guelph estimates that it is 1-10 out of every ten thousand people. There is much controversy about whether tartrazine has ill effects on individuals who are not clearly intolerant. Canada: Tartrazine is listed as a permitted food colouring in Canada. The majority of pre-packaged foods are required to list all ingredients, including all food additives such as colour; however, the Regulations provide food manufacturers with the choice of declaring added colour(s) by either their common name or simply as “colour”. In February 2010, Health Canada consulted the public and manufacturers on their plans to change the labeling requirements. Health Canada felt that it might be prudent to require the identification of specific colours on food labels, to allow consumers to make better-informed choices. The results of the consultation supported increased transparency. United Kingdom and European Union: The European Food Safety Authority allows for tartrazine to be used in processed cheese, canned or bottled fruit or vegetables, processed fish or fishery products, and wines and wine-based drinks. The UK FSA commissioned a study by researchers at Southampton University of the effect of a mixture of six food dyes (including tartrazine) on children in the general population, who consumed them in beverages. The study published in 2007 and found “a possible link between the consumption of these artificial colours and a sodium benzoate preservative and increased hyperactivity” in the children. Further testing was recommended. United States: The United States requires the presence of tartrazine to be declared on food and drug products and also colour batches to be pre-approved by the FDA. As part of these regulations, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration require that the precautions section of prescription drug labels include the warning statement: “this product contains FD+C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine) which many cause allergic-type reactions (including bronchial asthma) in certain susceptible persons. Although the overall incidence of FD+C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine) sensitivity in the general populations is low, it is frequently seen in patients who also have aspirin hypersensitivity.” In 2010, the Center for Science in the Public Interest called for the FDA to ban Yellow 5, the FDA reviewed the date, and did not ban it.
Tartrazine is only one of many, many synthetic additives that have been introduce to the market and have caused some very negative affects on the population. There are so many more that all of us have heard about on the News and other media platforms. Recently, researchers have found a number of different mechanisms of action for curcumin, including the ability to modulate about 700 of your genes, 160 different physiological pathways, and change your cell membranes. This is used as a medicine and has been deemed very potent. Doesn’t this make you want a change? This year, Canadian and American companies have begun to move forward on their own with your help. Throughout your newspapers, on your televisions, and now through the pages of your magazines you may have seen that we won. Finally, Kraft Foods have listened to their consumers and have announced that they will remove all artificial yellow dyes from all of their Macaroni & Cheese products by 2016. It took two years of activism and the voice from all 365,000 of you who signed the Change.org petition to make this one of the largest food petitions in history. This victory is a turning point in the fight against controversial food dyes and additives in our foods. Over the past few years, Presidents Choice has been moving forward with removing all artificial colouring and flavouring from every single one of their products. The end of the 2014-year completed their mission, and from that point forward you can rest easy with this company, knowing that they are working hard with your health in mind. Pepsi has moved forward to create an aspartame-free diet pop this year called Pepsi Next; the perfect balance between great taste and fewer calories by cutting out 30% of the sugar and adding naturally sweet stevia extract. Pepsi Next has no artificial sweeteners and is just 100 calories per 355mL, with the refreshing real cola taste you expect. McDonalds has also been striving to promote a healthier lifestyle, now with 100% Canadian beef produced from farms across the nation. With new and improved, healthier choices for both kids and adults, including: apple slices, yogurt, McWraps and Salad Bowls to name a few, this fast food company is on its way to a healthier future. These movements should let everyone know that we can make a difference. We do not have to follow the guidelines given to us by our countries food and drug organizations; with various regulations around the world, studies performed to show these associations the true short-term and long-term effects of chemical additives and still only some have chosen to further regulate or ban the additives... clearly this raises concern. If we as a community, a province, a nation, and even together around the world, keep pushing manufacturers to remove these products for good, then we can cut it off at the source and know for certain that what we eat will not be the death of us.

Dry Skin Solutions Most people experience dry skin problems at some point in their lives. Dry skin is usually cause by environmental conditions, genetics or excessive bathing and can occur anywhere on the body. If you suffer from dry skin, don’t worry, there are many things you can do to hydrate your skin and prevent it from drying out again. Moisturizing from the outside: the need to moisturize your skin when it’s dry may seem like a no-brainer, but it is important that you know how to moisturize effectively. Be sure to moisturize every night before you go to sleep, and if you suffer from dry hands, keep a small tube of hand cream beside your sink and moisturize after washing your hands. You need to be moisturizing frequently and consistently in order to effectively combat your dry skin.

Drink lots of water: water flushes toxins from your system and carries nutrients to your cells. This helps to prevent dry skin by keeping your skin nourished and hydrated. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables: a healthy and balanced diet will help your skin by providing the vitamins and nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy and hydrated. Try to eat at least 2 portions of green, leafy vegetables and 2 portions of seasonal fruits daily. Fruit and vegetables with a high-water content, such as watermelon, broccoli and tomatoes, are especially good for hydration. Cut back on salty and fried foods: these foods will dehydrate the body, exacerbating dry skin problems. Limit your intake of these foods and it will benefit your dry skin and your overall health.

Now in the throws of our summer season most of us will be taking advantage of this warmer weather by spending more time outdoors. While it may be good for the soul to soak up some sun after a long winter, it can mean trouble for your skin. More than 90% of skin cancer is caused by sun exposure so dermatologist are urging the public to take preventative measures in the sun this summer, and to see a dermatologist if any blemishes or lesions are spotted.
Top Ten Ways to Protect Yourself from the Sun 1. Use sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure it is water-resistant and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. 2. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside so your skin has time to absorb it. 3. Be generous in application of sunscreen. An ounce of sunscreen should cover the face, neck, arms and legs of the average adult. 4. Wear protective clothing, like hats, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts and pants 5. Seek shade when possible, especially during the hours of 10:00 am to 4:00 pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. 6. Avoid tanning beds as ultraviolet light can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. Use a self-tanning product but use sunscreen with it. 7. Protect children by reapplying sunscreen often with an SPF of at least 15, having them play in the shade and wear protective clothing. 8. Babies under the age of 6 months should never be in direct sunlight and should always wear a hat and clothing that protects them from UV rays. 9. Adults should perform regular self-exams. It is an easy way to detect abnormalities 10. Talk to your dermatologist and have a complete body scan once a year. Recent concerns about the safety of a compound called oxybenzone, used in most popular sunscreens have brought into question the safety of using these products. The Skin Cancer Foundation noted on their site that: “The Food and Drug Administration is preparing rules that will give consumers more information on the label about the sunscreens they buy. Most doctors still recommend sunscreens with a high SPF number and a combination of avobenzone and oxybenzone, ingredients that protect the skin from two types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB.” Sunscreen is only one part of the overall package when it comes to protecting yourself from harmful sunrays. Staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, and wearing protective clothing including a hat, will also help protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
Nutrients don’t only come in the form of food; water is the most important, and often most forgotten, nutrient. You can last for some time without food, but only days without water. Your lean body mass contains about 70 percent to 75 percent water, with fat containing much less: about 10 percent to 40 percent water. Because of increased muscle mass, men’s and athletes’ bodies contain more water than bodies with proportionately lower muscle and higher fat, such as non-athletic women, people who are overweight and people who are older. Water is: – The solvent for important biochemical reactions, supplying nutrients and removing waste. – Essential for maintaining blood circulation throughout your body. – The maintainer of body temperature. As you exercise, your metabolism and your internal body temperature increase. Water carries heat away from your internal organs before serious damage occurs, which can lead to heat stroke, and even death. The heat travels through your bloodstream to your skin, causing you to sweat. As the sweat evaporates, this allows you to cool off and maintain a safe body temperature, optimal functioning and health. Daily water intake must be balanced with losses to maintain total body water. Losing body water can adversely affect your functioning and health. Once you start feeling thirsty, you’ve probably lost about 1 percent of your body water and are dehydrated. With a 2 percent water loss, you could experience serious fatigue and cardiovascular impairments. It’s important to note that individual fluid needs differ depending on your sweat rate, the environmental temperature, your clothing, humidity and other factors.
Hydration Tips As summer temperatures rise, here are a number of important tips. – Drink enough water to prevent thirst. – Monitor fluid loss by checking the colour of your urine. It should be pale yellow and not dark yellow, too smelly or cloudy. – For short-duration (less than 60 minutes), low-to-moderateintensity activity, water is a good choice to drink before, during and after exercise. – Any time you exercise in extreme heat or for more than one hour, supplement water with a sports drink that contains electrolytes and 6 percent to 8 percent carbohydrates. This prevents “hyponatremia” (low blood sodium), which dilutes your blood and could also lead to serious impairment and death.

pediatric eye care Experts agree that 80% of all learning is visual. Children are our most precious asset. Nearly 10% of all children suffer from eye problems, such as lazy or crossed eyes, eye coordination difficultly or even damage to the eye tissues. Unfortunately, most children do not express that they cannot see well. According to numerous pediatric optometry and ophthalmology groups, children should at least be examined in the first year of life, then before starting school and each year thereafter. Very early detection of poor vision in children is important as early detection leads to better visual outcomes. Eye coordination refers to how the eyes work together as a team while focusing from one distance to the other. Poor eye coordination results in difficulty with reading and poorer academic performance. Eye coordination can be improved with eye muscle training and specialized glasses. Poor vision is simply an unnecessary barrier to learning and children’s eye examinations are covered by OHIP until 19 years of age. An added concern is the increased use of technology that our children utilize every single day. In the past decade, computer use amongst children has grown to almost 94% of the population having a home computer and access to the Internet. Children between the ages of 8 to 18 in a 2009 study were shown to devote 7.38 hours per day to entertainment media, which includes computer and video games. In 2015 the numbers are even higher with a reported 88 percent of all homes with children having smartphones.

Pediatric eye doctors are now expressing concern that heavy computer use among children will put them at risk for early myopia (shortsightedness). Migraines
+ Writing | The Ontario Migraine Clinic
Why do I suffer from migraines? The problem is how the nerves are talking. The main cause of migraine is an individual’s slow reaction to specific internal or external environmental changes. Physiological reactions take place constantly in response to our body’s needs. These responses are communicated through the nervous system to direct and coordinate proper function of our cells, organs and systems. The way that nerves communicate with one another is by releasing chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. Any physiological adjustment that needs to take place requires the correct amount of neurotransmitter(s) at the appropriate time. Sometimes with altered function, this release is too fast or slow, too much or too little, and this can lead to inaccurate or delayed adjustment in function. With migraine suffers, the impaired adjustments can last hours or even days. This inappropriate adjustment period leads to the associated migraine symptoms. Eventually the correction is made and function returns to normal. Migraine sufferers have normal adjustment of neurotransmitter under virtually every situation but a few, and those are referred to as triggers. There are hundreds of triggers (individual or combined) for migraine, but usually only a few effect any one individual. It is important to understand that the trigger is not the problem, but rather the individual’s diminished ability to respond fast enough to what that trigger is requiring them to do. The demand placed upon our physiology is very different from barometric pressure changes compared with the strong smell of perfume. Both are considered to be triggers for migraine but, not in all migraineurs. The reason for this is that different triggers place different biological demands on different aspects of our physiology. This is why different people can have different triggers, even though the migraine can feel the same for both. Think of it in a similar fashion to having a fever. Several people could have the same temperature fever, with totally different types of infections. The fever doesn’t tell you what the infection is, or what part of the body is infected. The suffering of a migraine, doesn’t indicate where you are deficient in your health. Once the weakened areas are identified, they can be treated appropriately. An individuals lifestyle, mental or physical stress, can be the cause of different nervous system strengths and weaknesses.
How does acupuncture work? Treatment is successful in part, because of the nature of the way your nervous system works. Understanding that your nervous system is ever learning and is adaptable to changes is the first step in understanding how acupuncture works. Acupuncture is like going to the gym for your nervous system. The placement of fine needles to a depth that stimulates specific branches of nerves, is one way of understanding how acupuncture is able to tap into different levels of the nervous system. Combinations of needles that are working towards a desired effect is how treatments are designed. Systems that have been observed to be under or over functioning will optimize if stimulated or trained through the specific application of acupuncture. Proper assessment of an individual’s health can determine the areas that need improvement. Traditional Chinese Medicine, has many evaluation techniques that assess the individual’s health, on a system by system basis. The complete assessment determines an individual’s strengths and areas of weakness. This is the starting point of each persons treatment plan. Selecting the specific acupuncture points will target the appropriate areas and stimulate them to regain optimal function. Just like drinking red wine may stimulate the process of physiological events that we refer to as migraine, the appropriate placement of acupuncture needles can stimulate a response to reverse the process. It is the optimizing of the systems, through the neurological training the acupuncture provides, that regains a persons health. Acupuncture is training, like going to school. Acupuncture treatments are administered in a logical progression, with each treatment building upon the last, to reach the desired effect of regaining optimal function. A person with several migraine triggers, like weather changes, hormonal fluctuations or alcohol, might need different amounts of improvement to achieve the ability to handle what each trigger is imposing. Because different triggers place different physiological demands, each individual will achieve the ability to deal with different triggers at different stages of treatment. Only a little improvement may be needed in their systems that are responsible for dealing with hormones, but lots of improvement in the areas responsible for processing alcohol. Remember physiologically they are different problems that end up having the same symptoms of migraine.

Another aspect of managing stress is getting a good night sleep. It is essential for your health and well being yet millions of people don’t get enough. Everyone’s sleep needs vary; however, the average adult usually requires 8 hours of sleep a night. Statistics have shown that falling asleep while driving is responsible for many crashes, injuries and deaths each year with young people in their teens and twenties being particular susceptible to the effects of chronic sleep loss. Our body has an amazing natural way of regulating itself so our biological clock will tell us when it is time to go to sleep and when it is time to get up. But everyday stressors, including technology, caffeinated drinks and prescribed medications, can alter our natural ability making it harder and harder to get to sleep. Utilizing natural herbs to that provide a calming effect has proven to be a safe and effective way to help you relax and enjoy a good nights sleep. Naturally Bulk carries a selection of products made from a special blend of herbs that will help promote a more restful sleep while alleviating mental stress, fatigue and weakness.

Not so “sweet” corn + Writing | The Non-GMO Project
For many of us sweet corn has been a cornerstone of summer meals and a symbol of the fall harvest and Thanksgiving since we were children. However, this once benign treat has gone through a radical change. In 2011, Monsanto announced their plans to grow genetically modified sweet corn on 250,000 acres in the United States. The harvest from these GMO (genetically modified organism) fields accounted for 40 percent of the sweet corn market in 2012.
Here are key facts you need to know:
Monsanto’s GMO sweet corn is bred to resist Monsanto’s own Roundup herbicide and to produce its own insecticide. Bt toxin, the regulated insecticide that is produced systemically throughout the corn plant, ensures that if an insect consumes any part of the plant it dies. The inherent environmental and health concerns associated with eating an experimental food that produces its own insecticide has not been lost on American shoppers.
Who? While GMO sweet corn has been produced in the past by Syngenta, this is the first attempt by a biotech company to corner the sweet corn market.
Concerned consumers around the country have been working diligently to protect this staple by petitioning major retailers to ask them to commit to not selling GMO sweet corn. Over half million signatures and letters were gathered by food safety non-profits in early 2012. The Non-GMO Project encourages you to take action to help keep this corn off of your plate and out of our farmers’ fields. Unbeknownst to the majority of consumers, in the summer of 2012 large quantities of GMO sweet corn appeared on grocery store shelves and roadside produce stands. The sweet corn is being used for frozen and canned corn products, and it is also available fresh across the country. In 2013, Friends of the Earth released a first-of-its-kind study tracking the prevalence of GMO sweet corn and brought us some good news! According to the study, out of 71 samples of fresh, frozen and canned corn tested from around the United States, only two of those tested positive (both were confirmed to be Monsanto Seminis® Performance Series™ sweet corn).
What? GMO sweet corn is genetically engineered to be herbicide resistant (Roundup Ready) and to produce its own insecticide (Bt Toxin). Like all GMOs, genetically modified sweet corn has not been thoroughly tested to ensure that it is safe for consumption.
Where? GMO sweet corn can be found in the produce aisle of your local food store and at farmers’ markets and farmstands. It can also be found in processed foods that contain sweet corn. How can I keep GMO sweet corn off my plate? All of the Non-GMO Project Verified sweet corn is listed on their website www.nongmoproject.org; however, if you can’t find a Verified version, eating Certified Organic sweet corn is a great way to protect you and your family from this experimental food. Under the regulations of the National Organic Program, Certified Organic farmers are not allowed to knowingly plant GMO seed. Learn more about all of the benefits of Certified Organic at www.ota.com. Super berries + Writing | Sonya Stell
Of all the so-called superfoods — the nutrient-rich foods high in antioxidants that are thought to fight the ills of aging — few receive more accolades than the berry family. From humble blueberries to their exotic cousins from distant climates, berries have muscled out other super fruits to take a firm stand front and center. Sure, orange fruits and dark leafy greens get their fair shake, but the berries seem to steal the show. And the attention bestowed on berries is not unfounded. In study after study, the benefits of berries are praised. Most recently, researchers revealed that women who ate more than three servings of blueberries or strawberries a week had a 34 percent lower heart attack risk than those who ate less. Researchers say the reason is that the berries, like other red and blue fruits and vegetables, have high concentrations of anthocyanin, an antioxidant that may help lower blood pressure and improve blood vessel function. Another study, found that women who eat plenty of blueberries and strawberries experience slower mental decline with age than women who consume fewer of the fruits. And what about all the other berries that are regularly slapped with the “miracle” label by food marketers and importers? Although many of the exuberant health claims have yet to be confirmed, the bulk of berries are loaded with important nutrients that can go far in combatting common deficiencies that may be making you feel less than peppy. With that in mind, here’s the who’s who of the super berry world. One of the earliest contenders in the miracle-food market, açai berries are harvested from açai palm trees native to the rain forests of South America. In the Amazon the berries are beaten into a pulp, diluted in water and eaten with manioc, meat, fish or dried shrimp. Supporters claim that this little berry can tame arthritis and cancer, help with weight loss and high cholesterol, give a boost to erectile dysfunction, aid in detoxification and provide overall health exuberance. Açai berries have proven to be a good source of antioxidants, fibre and heart-healthy fats, but research has yet to prove much else. Açai can be eaten raw, in capsules, in beverages such as juice, smoothies or energy drinks, and other food products. It is often sold as a frozen pulp. Its popularity in North America has had an unintended consequence: there is less of this healthy staple for native and often poor populations who have relied on it for generations. Known scientifically as Malpighia emarginata, and commonly as acerola, Barbados cherry, West Indian cherry and wild crepe myrtle, this shrub is native to South America, southern Mexico and Central America, but is now also being grown as far north as Texas and in subtropical areas of Asia. The fruit is bursting with vitamin C — about nine times the vitamin C found in a typical orange. It is most commonly available in juice, powder or supplement form.

Also known as black chokeberry, aronia is native to the eastern U.S. and has a long history in Eastern Europe. The aronia fruit is about the size of a large blueberry and is commonly found in wet woods and swamps. Aronia shrubs are cultivated as ornamental plants; however, there is interest in the health benefits of the fruit because of its high levels of anthocyanin’s and flavonoids — 5 to 10 times higher than cranberry juice — with beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants, polyphenols, minerals and vitamins. The fruit is inedible raw because of its astringent nature (hence the common name, chokeberry), but the berries are used to make juice as well as wine, jam, syrup, spreads, tea and tinctures. Blackberries are special, beyond their basic berry goodness. Notable for their high levels of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid and manganese, they also rank well for antioxidant strength, with notable levels of polyphenolic compounds, such as ellagic acid, tannins, ellagitannins, quercetin, gallic acid, anthocyanins and cyanidins. By many accounts, blackberries are considered one of the strongest antioxidant foods.

Happiness
Summer has arrived and most people who are familiar with the seasonal disorder SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) are just glad the sun is shinning; however, for another group of people, summer SAD sets in. These people actually prefer the dark, cold overcast days that we experience every fall and winter in our region, welcoming the respite from the heat and possibly the allergens that so many people suffer from once the tress start to pollenate each spring. Often missdiagnosed, summer-SAD sufferers often get lumped in with major depression or anxiety disorders; however a small study conducted by Thomas A Wehr discovered that his 12 patients actually became depressed in the summer and had either normal mood or manic episodes in the winter. Their depressive periods began in the late spring – March through June, and then subsided by early autumn – August through October. Formal descriptions of seasonal affective disorder do not specify the season in which you are affected which suggests the two varieties are the same, just happening at a different time of the year. By 1991, Wehr had enough data to suggest that the two forms might actually be two different disorders and that the only thing they have in common are feelings of sadness and anxiety. Someone who suffers from winter –SAD often oversleeps where someone with summer-SAD often experiences insomnia. WinterSAD sufferers also often crave carbohydrates and experience weight gain whereby summer-SAD sufferers typically have a poor appetite and loose weight. What causes Summer-SAD? It has always been believed that winter-SAD comes from the lack of daylight hours in the winter, which disrupts the secretion of the hormone called melatonin in the brain. This results in a disruption to our circadian cycles. Treated with exposure to artificial sources of light, particularly in the morning has proven to be overwhelmingly successful. It has been suggested that Summer-SAD is the result of the elevated summertime temperatures but another hypothesis is whether summertime allergies could be to blame. When suffering from allergens, your system produces inflammation in the respiratory airways and that can trigger depression in vulnerable individuals. Since the winter is the time of the year when pollen is absent, doctors studying this disorder associated the two as a potential cause. Whether it is the temperatures or the allergen in the air or something else, one thing for sure is, summer-SAD seems more resistant to therapy than winter-SAD. A summer-SAD sufferer can stay inside with the air-conditioning on and close the drapes to darken the room, but as soon as they go outside into the heat it’s as if they’ve never been treated, whereby a winter-SAD sufferer can actually feel much better once they have had the artificial light treatment. It is likely that there are numerous origins for summer sadness. Some people suffering from the high heat while others from allergies and maybe others suffering from the disruptions to their circadian rhythms. Whatever the cause, perhaps just knowing that there is a real phenomenon known to science, may be enough to help if you are one of the people suffering from summer-SAD. liveinbalance | The Headlines Edition

Will?
What is a Will? A Will is a legally binding declaration of a person’s wishes regarding the disposition of his or her estate after death. Typically, a Will includes clauses such as: identification of the person making the Will; revocation of all previous Wills; appointment of executors and guardians; payment of debts and taxes; specific gifts or legacies; residual bequests (including trusts); and administrative clauses. Why make a Will? Many benefits result from making a Will, including enabling you to: • • • • • •

Avoid dispute and litigation (e.g., by providing directions for special property or items). Create trusts (e.g., for minor children) Donate to charity upon death.
What if I don’t make a Will? If you do not have a Will, on death, your property will be disposed of according to the provincial laws of intestacy (under the Succession Law Reform Act in Ontario). This means: • • •

Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness & Flourishing + Writing | Andrea Seydel
Positive Psychology is the study of human well-being. Specifically, positive psychologists like University of Pennsylvania’s Martin Seligman try to discover the conditions and habits that lead to human flourishing. For long term-psychological well-being, people must be engaged in meaningful activities. They have to be in environments where they are valued by others and have the opportunity to build their self-esteem in constructive ways. Seligman uses the acronym PERMA to describe Positive Psychology’s key points: • Positive emotion • Engagement • Relationships • Meaning • Accomplishment Flourishing, of course, involves cultivating as much PERMA as possible. Well-being theory proposes that you don’t need a naturally sunny disposition to flourish. It’s all about having the right strategies. It helps to realize that most of us are never going to get rid of all unpleasant thoughts and feelings. As we accept that some gremlins are sticking around, our job becomes, as Seligman puts it, “to live heroically,” even when we are feeling down in the dumps. No one has control over all the events in his or her life, but we do have control over what we think about them — and that has a big impact on how we feel. Seligman offers the following “ABC” model (encompassing adversity, beliefs and consequences) to help us stay clear about that: “It is beliefs (B) about an adversity (A) — and not the adversity itself — that cause the consequent (C) feelings. So next time the demons pounce, try the ABC model to separate stimulus from response. It might create just enough psychic space to help you perceive the situation anew. Although, it is sometimes tough to create this space and perception shift, it can greatly affect your ability to be happy and flourish.” If you have a question, feedback or want to book a session with Andrea, she can be reached at www.andreaseydel.com liveinbalance | The Headlines Edition

When you are planning your interior décor scheme, one of the loveliest ways to brighten your home’s rooms is by incorporating flowers to give that extra bright touch to your spaces. Floral decorations are not necessarily everyone’s taste but you can bring lots of vibrant colour to your rooms by choosing carefully. For example, if your home is fairly minimalist in terms of its furnishings and fittings, you probably only need a few splashes of colour to draw the eye. If you love all things floral, then you’ll be looking to add more than a splash and there are plenty of ways you can do this. Coordinate your colour scheme: Summer is the perfect time for bringing flowers into the home. Winter has been banished for another season, spring flowers have made their delightful appearances to signal the earth is warming up and the growing season is here, and now you have plenty of opportunities to bring the warmth of summer into your home. The best way to start is to look at your rooms and what furniture and fittings you have, with a view to giving everything a makeover. A large space will easily take bold floral designs for re-covering sofas and chairs’, matching the designs on drapes and scatter cushions. As an alternative to drapes, you could look into installing wooden shutters. There is a huge range of shutters available, and if your windows are different shapes and sizes then you can get them made to measure. Shutters are ideal to help you control the amount of light that comes into your rooms, and you can easily incorporate the flower theme by stenciling or simply painting some pretty flower pictures onto them. Floor coverings and tableware: An attractive rug with flower motifs can instantly brighten up a room, so look out for ones that will match whatever you have decided to do with your floral theme. When looking for tableware, search for mats that have colourful flowers on them, and add a tablecloth to match. For smaller rooms, seek out delicate painted tableware and wineglasses that are engraved with bunches of grapes. Cut flowers: There’s no better way to bring flowers into your home than by having cut flowers scattered around surfaces, in vases or other containers. They add a real sense of freshness to rooms, and are perfect for experimenting with a range of shapes and colours. If you want to make a bold statement then dahlias are ideal, and irises are arguably one of the most beautiful types of flower to display in all their myriad of colours. Roses are always a favorite as cut flowers – they’re not just for Valentine’s Day! – and their colour variations will allow you to mix and match to your heart’s content. Tulips, carnations; you can please yourself when it comes to the range of choice for cut flowers. Bright and fresh: Flowers make a real difference to your home, whether from your garden or your local florist, helping you bring out the brightness and freshness of your interior décor. liveinbalance | The Headlines Edition

Revitalize Your Home
Home Life
Relationships
+ Writing | Sonya Stell
It doesn’t take much to revitalize the energy of your home; just a little bit of inspiration and a touch of sensitivity. Through materials, texture and colours, we can change the energy of any space to one that exuberates vibrancy and inspiration. Through sight and perception, we can rearrange spaces to suit our sense of taste and habits, yet at the same time create a living environment that exudes happiness and an expression of relief and satisfaction. The bright hall typifies the expanse of space at the front entrance of your home. By space I refer to that feeling of spatial freedom when you move from one room to another. To do so, you need to study the orientation and placement of your main door. Typical to most homes, the main entrance is segregated to its own space entity either in the form of an entry foyer or a portico-style design. But if you were to integrate the main entrance to the annex living areas, it helps to expand the front sector of the home whereby the immediate view on entry is the large expanse of the living room. Avoid barriers in front of the door such as light partitions where you have to navigate around them to move to the next space. By ‘opening up’ the space, this technique immediately expands your front door sector many times over. Don’t change what is already there. Sometimes if you get too inventive, you may end up with a brand new set of problems that come with it. Take for example the location of the toilet. While these areas may constrict the size of casual spaces such as bedrooms and living areas, relocating a toilet may prove to be a strenuous task as it may involve piping and waterproofing issues. • So play with the space that you have. Any space can be transformed to look designed if you play with your palette of materials. Here are some fast tips for a toilet design. • Select a dark coloured floor tile to give the space a strong foundation. • Use light coloured wall tiles with accented patterns to lift the space. • Introduce mirrors as a visual medium to double up the width of the space. • Play with the type of lights. Spotlights help to highlight certain features yet maintain a subtle ambiance. Wall lights help brighten up the room, so use this light technique for make-up areas only. • Highlight the design properties of the sink. As this area is the most widely used part of the bathroom, a high-end finish draws attention to the classiness of the space. The final tip involves the use of lighting. Lights bring a vital source of energy and is the key element to setting the mood of any space. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, lights can help highlight or tone down certain areas of the room. Fluorescent lighting helps flood the room with an ambient feel. liveinbalance | The Headlines Edition

As our summer starts to wind down you will also see your garden starting to change ... It is entering into the seed making phase and will need some extra TLC to help keep it producing. Firstly you want to make sure that your plants are well watered, but avoid spraying them as fall fungi and viruses are anxious to take hold. Using a soaking hose will help you ensure the roots are getting the water they need. Hoe down the weeds before they go to seed and leave them between the rows. They’ll work well as a hide-away for bug-eating toads as well as help retain the moisture for the plants. As the season wraps up and you find that your garden only has a few carrots and green beans along with a handful of broccoli sprout buttons, maybe a few miss-shaped zucchini or cucumbers don’t through them away. You can make these odds and ends into “mixed refrigerator pickles”. Prep your vegetables by trimming off any crooked ends and spiky hides of the cucumbers as well as the green ends of the over-aged carrots. Shell the beans from any oversized pods and slice the rest. Steam-blanch all your vegetables for two minutes and then chill in cold water, drain and cover with a pickling brine. A good recipe is half cider vinegar and half water, plus salt and a little sugar. If you like you can also add some fresh garlic and/ or dried hot peppers with a pinch of mixed pickling spices. Boil the brine and dried spices, and then cool. Add the fresh garlic and the chopped vegetables along with slices of fresh sweet onion and keep chilled. The vegetables will take on the pickle-bine taste overnight and will keep in your refrigerator for several days. September is a good time to plant your bulbs and it all starts with high-quality ones. or that have started growing mold on them. Also look for big bulbs as they are more likely to bloom compared to the smaller bulbs of the same variety. Choosing the right spot to plant your bulbs is also very important as even the healthiest bulbs will fail if you plant them in the wrong spot. Most bulbs need at least 6 hours of direct sun a day and be placed in well-drained soil. Tulips and daffodils should be planted in September or October once the soil temperatures have cooled. Make sure you plant them deep enough. The general rule is, dig a hole two to three times deeper than the bulb is tall. So a 3” bulb needs a hole between 6” and 9” deep. It your bulb has a pointed end, place that end up and if not, look for where the roots come out and plant that end down. Add some quality compost into your bulbs’ planting holes and be sure to give them a good drink of water after you plant them. Covering them with 2 to 3 inches of mulch will also help prevent weeds while your bulbs will easily push up through it. This can also help prevent squirrels from digging them up.

Naturally Living with hydrogen peroxide + Writing | Nancy Stell
Hydrogen Peroxide is one of the most useful products you can have in your home. Many of us already know the benefits of using it to sanitize small cuts, but here are several more ways you can utilize this amazing product. • Soak your toothbrushes in hydrogen peroxide to kill staph bacteria and other common germs found in the bathroom environment. • Use a cap full as a mouth rinse; it will help whiten your teeth and kill germs that cause bad breath. • Use as a face rinse to kill the bacteria caused by acne. • Remove ear wax by putting a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide into your ears, wait a couple of minutes and then follow up with a couple of drops of olive oil. Wait another minute or so and then drain the fluid from your ears.
• Add 6 to 8 drops of hydrogen peroxide in each ear to alleviate symptoms and help to clear up an ear infection. • Put peroxide into a spray bottle and apply it directly onto the tile to remove dirt and stains. • Pour about a ½ a cup of peroxide into your toilet bowl and let it soak for at least 30 minutes to remove stains. • Spray peroxide on to the soapy scum and dirt stains around your bathtub. Let stand for 30 minutes and then rinse to loosen the grim. • Control mold and mildew by spraying peroxide on areas where they are present to stop fungal growth. • Clean dirty mirrors and other glass surfaces by spraying peroxide onto them. Wipe away with a clean cloth. • Disinfect your countertops by spraying peroxide onto kitchen and bathroom countertops. • Disinfect your cutting boards by spray hydrogen peroxide onto them, killing germs and bacteria from raw meat and other foods. • You can wash fruits and vegetables with peroxide by spraying them and letting them soak for a minute or two before rinsing in clean water. • Use about a cup of peroxide and add to your wash water, soak fabrics for 15 to 30 minutes to revitalize dingy or yellowed whites. 40

• Remove organic stains by mixing two parts peroxide with one part dish detergent. Apply to organic stains to remove them. Remember that it will bleach darker fabrics so use caution with this technique. • Clean your light coloured rugs and carpets by spraying peroxide onto the mud, food etc. stains. • Add a ½ liter of peroxide to 4 ½ liters of water and run the solution through humidifiers to disinfect and remove any mold or mildew that may be growing. You can purchase hydrogen peroxide at most food and drug stores. Remember to always use caution as the liquid and vapors can burn skin and lungs. You should never swallow peroxide when using orally as it can be severely detrimental to your health. Hydrogen peroxide is only for external use, but when used properly, can be an amazing and resourceful product for your household.

For many of us, a section of time in the morning or before special events is dedicated to some “me time while we beautify ourselves. Though, there are varying degrees of how much time and how many products women will use on their faces, for almost everyone it always comes down to that perfect lipstick. Finding yours can be quite a task and once you have, do you ever wonder how good these products really are for your lips? Surprisingly, conventional lipstick can be a source of harmful chemicals and since it is used on the skin and near the mouth, these chemicals can be easily absorbed. These homemade lipstick variations let you create a personalized lipstick colour that is chemical free and inexpensive to make. The Base Recipe 1 teaspoon beeswax pastilles 1 teaspoon shea butter or cocoa butter 1 teaspoon coconut oil
Optional Colour Add-Ins Red hues: 1/8 teaspoon of beet root powder or 1 drop of natural red food colouring with no chemical additives. Note: add these very slowly as a little goes a long way. Brown/Tan hues: 1/4 teaspoon (or more for the shade desired) of organic cocoa powder, a tiny pinch of cinnamon or tumeric to get the shade that you would like. What To Do Melt the beeswax, shea butter/cocoa butter and coconut oil in a glass jar without a lid in a small pot of simmering (not boiling) water. It should melt quickly. Once melted, remove from heat and add any optional colouring or essential oil for scent. Once all ingredients are mixed well but still in a liquid state, use a dropper to pour into a empty, clean lip chap or lipstick container. Fill to just below the top as it will expand once cooled.

your dentures
+ Writing | David Kostynyk of The Kostynyk Denture Centre
The longer you wear your dentures the more your gums change underneath them, which results in them getting looser. In order to restore the retentive qualities of the denture, you will need to have them professionally relined or refitted. There are three different types of denture relines, which include hard, soft and temporary. The hard reline is the kind of reline required on all full dentures every two years. This process involves your denturist removing the plastic from the inside of your dentures and then re-fitting it to the present shape of your gums. This form now contains an accurate impression of the shape of your gums and it is replaced with pink, hard acrylic in exactly the same shape as the original impression materiel. Your dentures now will conform to the contours of your mouth and should make maximum contact with the tissues producing maximum retention. A soft reline is an option for patients who find that their gums are too tender and they keep getting sore spots when wearing regular dentures. Relining with a material that remains pliable for a year or two before it needs to be replaced, these dentures are less likely to give 44

the patient sore spots. It is advisable to have your denturist check that you are not having other problems that are possibly contributing to the discomfort of regular dentures such as an overbuilt denture or a resorbed ridge. Temporary relines are used when the patient has gone perhaps several years without having their dentures checked, resulting in swollen and tender gums. To take a mold when the gums are in poor condition can result in the relined dentures perpetuating the problem. So in this case, your denturist will frequently resort to a temporary relined material to allow the inflammation to subside. Fitting much tighter with a softer and more pliable material, it will only last for a few months, but will allow for the patients gums to heal and return to normal. Once this has happened, you are ready for new dentures or a hard reline. So many aspects of your health are dependent on the condition of your gums; from proper nutrition to gum disease and as we age, these areas need to be addressed before serious problems occur. Visit your denturist as recommended and you will maintain a healthy and happy smile for many years to come.

Trained in skin wellness, an Esthetician will help you balance oil and moisture content to achieve a healthy and more youthful complexion. Utilizing a variety of treatments and products, Estheticians will help protect your skin from environmental exposures and also combat fine lines, wrinkles and a dull or uneven skin tone. They are also skilled to help you manage conditions such as blemishes, rosacea, dry skin and much more. If you are looking for smooth healthy skin while enjoying a relaxing and rejuvenating treatment, a skin care professional can be the answer for you. Although an Esthetician can not diagnosis, prescribe or preform any procedure that would require a medical license, they can provide complimentary and supportive
therapies to help improve your condition. They are also trained to recognize early signs of many medical conditions that affect your skin and will refer you to a dermatologist in such a case. Some of the techniques you can expect in your facial treatment include facial steaming, exfoliation, and soothing massage. Masques, lotions and creams are also used as well. It is always a good idea to schedule a consultation with your Esthetician first, especially if you have never been to one before. It will give you and your therapist an opportunity to discuss your goals and set out an individualized treatment plan. naturalteeth whitening

Almost 18% of us ‘usually conceal our teeth in photos.’ Having great teeth is very important in our culture today. Do you have yellow or discoloured teeth? The sad truth is some people, no matter how many times they brush their teeth, have stained teeth from drinking coffee, tea, and or smoking. Your teeth are one of the first things people notice. They are a sign of health as well as confidence. When making a first impression, having teeth that look like you don’t brush them can send a signal that you don’t really care about yourself. Who doesn’t want to have a beautiful smile with white sparkling teeth? The good news is we have 6 secrets to naturally whiten your teeth. Six Ways to Naturally Whiten Your Teeth 1. Brush After Drinking or Eating The best way, but not always the easiest is to simply brush your teeth after eating or drinking something. This takes a lot of persistence and can even be kind of difficult depending on where you are at the time. Most food does not stain teeth, but if you are a coffee drinker or if you smoke, you can pretty much count on having discoloured teeth from staining. If this is the case then having your teeth cleaned every three months by a hygienist may be in order, besides trying some of the natural remedies listed here. 2. Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide This works great as a natural teeth whitener. Many people confirm to the fact that it does make their teeth look whiter. Mix a small amount of hydrogen peroxide with a small amount of baking soda to make a paste. Brush your teeth as usual, making sure you brush those back teeth too. Hydrogen peroxide is an anti-bacterial agent and works great as a total mouth and gum cleaner and keeps the mouth free of germs. Baking soda is a gritty substance like sandpaper so be careful that you have enough hydrogen peroxide mixed in with the soda because if you don’t it can very well scrub the enamel right off your teeth and enamel does not grow back. The paste should not be gritty at all, but rather a runnier paste than a stiff paste. 3. Coconut Oil Can it be true? Coconut oil to clean your teeth? Just when you thought you heard it all when it comes to coconut oil, along it comes to the rescue as a teeth whitener. Some people are attesting to their teeth becoming whiter by applying coconut oil to their teeth after they brush. But for most people, they are praising the results of oil pulling. Simply put a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it between your teeth for 5 to 20 minutes. Or add a few drops to your toothbrush and simply brush it on, or add the coconut oil to a corner of a clean washcloth and rub it on. Also, coconut oil has antimicrobial properties so it’s great for your gums as well. 46

4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) It makes sense that apple cider vinegar would eventually remove stubborn stains on the teeth, especially from coffee and nicotine. It has been proven that it does work but you have to be consistent and it takes at least a month of continuous usage to see results. Some say that using ACV looks like you just got your teeth professionally cleansed. Be careful, as with all acids, it can remove the enamel on your teeth as well. After brushing with ACV, you will need to brush again with regular toothpaste, preferably a non-fluoride paste, or rinse your mouth out really well. 5. Lemon or Orange Peels There have been reports that lemon and or orange peels will also do the trick of whitening your teeth. Guess you don’t know until you try. Here again, these food products are very healthy and good for your stomach but the acid content might eventually wear away the enamel on the teeth. So if you use lemon or orange peel always rinse afterwards to be on the safe side. A good oral mouth rinse is hydrogen peroxide because it keeps breath fresh by eliminating bad breath and also is a very good bacterial agent. Use half water and half hydrogen peroxide, swish around in your mouth and leave in for at least a full minute. 6. Strawberries It has been said that Catherine Zeta Jones whitens her teeth with strawberries. Who would have thought? Tyra Banks tried this teethwhitening trick on her show. She simply mashed up about four or five strawberries and rubbed this yummy mixture all over her teeth. Tyra Banks teeth are already really white from having them bleached so you couldn’t really tell any difference. Some people say this really does work, and if Catherine Zeta Jones rubs her teeth with strawberries, it must be worth giving it a try. Don’t forget to rinse well afterwards.

Why feeding your pet quality food matters
Pet Health
Wellness
+ Writing | Nancy Stell
Just like us, over-processed, by–productriddled and chemically altered foods are just not healthy for our pets and while these foods meet the basic requirements for sustaining life, they certainly do not provide a diet to achieve optimal health. Most people feed their pets the same food day in and day out and if these foods are highly processed or poor quality foods, our pets end up being exposed to these chemicals and additives every single day. And with the increasing incidents of hormonal disorders, cancer and other diseases, it raises the question as to whether or not this is a contributing factor. So what can you do? First read the ingredient list. Pet food must be listed in descending order by weight. This often means that the first
5 to 7 ingredients are the major ingredients in the food. So try and choose foods with real named meats, whole grains and vegetables versus by-products or partial grains. Avoid potentially harmful ingredients. Artificial preservatives are known to be capable of, or suspected of, causing cancer in humans so it is now believed that they will also cause the same serious problems with our pets. Lastly avoid unnecessary fillers. Our pets do require a source of fiber, so choose foods that include whole grains and vegetables versus wheat mill run, rice bran, corn bran etc. The old saying, “You are what you eat” applies to everyone in the family. Want to know a simple secret that can help your overweight dog lose weight? And live longer, too? To be successful, every weight loss plan must be based upon one simple principle… Dogs that consume fewer calories than they burn lose weight. Simple, right? Yet if weight loss was truly that easy, why are so many pets overweight?
owner to admit her 80 pound dog is 20 pounds overweight — not just “big-boned”. Every day vet’s hear pet owners comment, “How can he be overweight? He hardly eats anything”. Obesity is frequently indicative that our dogs are sedentary, couch potato eating machines burning almost no calories.
An Epidemic of Overweight Dogs Today, dogs are fatter than ever. It’s now estimated that 45% of all dogs are either overweight or obese. What’s worse, obesity can be life-threatening, too. An overweight dog is more likely to suffer from a disabling medical condition like…diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, lung disorders, high blood pressure, immune dysfunction, and cancerous tumors.
The Solution The obesity equation is actually very simple. Dogs that consume more calories than they burn gain weight. So, to lose weight… Your dog must eat less — and exercise more. That’s all there is to successful weight loss. Best of all, if you work out together, exercise can be great for you, too.
Add Two Extra Years to Your Dog’s Life A recent study proves that dogs maintaining ideal body weight live almost two years longer (and with significantly less disease) than their overweight siblings. An overweight dog is more likely to die at a younger age. In other words, you can add nearly two extra years to your dog’s life just by maintaining your pet’s ideal weight. A Couch Potato Eating Machine Unfortunately, many fail to recognize a fat dog. Veterinarians report that although nearly 50% of all the dogs they see are overweight, only 17% of pet owners agree. It can sometimes be difficult for an
The Goal: Your Dog’s Ideal Weight Start your plan by knowing your dog’s ideal weight. Not only can your veterinarian help you do this, but she can also screen your pet for certain conditions that can contribute to obesity…diabetes, Cushing’s disease or hypothyroidism. You can also visit the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention for some suggested weight ranges for specific breeds. Once you know your dog’s ideal weight, you’ll be able to discover the amount of calories to feed your dog daily to achieve steady weight loss. Use a dog food calculator to determine this important number. While most dogs will experience predictable weight loss when fed this amount each day, others may require even fewer calories. This can depend on a dog’s age and activity level.

Keeping your pets
safe this summer
+ Writing | Sonya Stell
Summer is here and with it, the warmer temperatures and we want to make sure you have these useful tips handy on how to keep your pets safe during the season!
Keep it cool indoors. If possible, turn on the air conditioning in your home, especially on very hot days. If you feel too warm, you can bet your pet is feeling the same way!
Protect delicate skin. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in dogs and cats. Long fur will provide some protection from the sun, but the belly and nose of the dog, as well as the ears and around the eyes of a cat can be at risk for dangerous sun exposure. You can apply sunblock to these areas every 3-4 hours but make sure to avoid sunblock ingredients like zinc oxide, as they can be toxic to pets! Ask your veterinarian, veterinary clinic/animal hospital, or local pet store, for advice on the best products to keep your pets safe!
Never leave your pet in the car! Interior temperatures in a car can rise dangerously in as little as 7 minutes on a hot day. Your dog does not have the same cooling mechanism as you do, and they can die or get very ill if left in a hot car for even a very short time, and even if you leave the car windows open slightly.
Exercise safely. Don’t walk or run your dog during the day’s highest heat and humidity hours (usually 1- 4 pm). This is especially important for dogs with short noses, (like Bulldogs and Pugs). These types of breeds have more difficulty breathing properly, especially during hot temperatures.

Look for signs of heat stroke in your pet. If your dog shows signs of heat stroke—heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, diarrhea or weakness, move him/her to a cool place. You can place a damp towel over his/her body and get him/her to the vet as soon as possible! Heat stroke can be deadly and needs to be addressed and treated promptly! Finally, keep your pets well hydrated!

Let’s Boogy + Writing | Sonya Stell
It is officially time to say “those lazy days are over!” as we continue into summer and gear up for back-to-school and back to our routines. Many of us have spent the last months enjoying the beautiful sunshine, lounging by the pool and taking in all that is summer. Well, enough of that! It’s time to start planning what our kids and ourselves can find this September to get boogying.
Team Sports Teaching your child to cooperate and work with other teammates is an invaluable lesson to learn. Though, sometimes the adults can forget some of these lessons too... and that is why it is a great idea to get involved with a team again! Enroll your child in soccer, basketball, hockey, etc. and then see if they also have an adult team available for yourself!
Dancing Dance classes are always a great way to get our children in shape, but did you know that many studios also offer adult dance classes? So while your kids are dancing up a storm, you can be moving and grooving right along with them. Check out some of your local studios to find out if they offer classes for the more mature student!
Music Exercising the brain will never get old. Music lessons, jam sessions or just-for-fun groups are available throughout our communities for the young and the old! Learned to play an instrument as a kid? Not to worry, even if it has been years, those fundamental skills will still come back and soon you will be rocking and rolling once again!
