preparing for a road trip WRITTEN BY SONYA STELL It’s time to hit the road! With warm weather and sunnier days, there is nothing nicer than being able to cruise around town with the windows down and the music turned up! If you’re planning a road trip with your friends this summer, make sure your ride is properly packed and all of the important things are looked after. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you pull out of the driveway and head off into the sunset: Maintenance: car troubles will really ruin the fun, especially if you are in the middle of nowhere. It is very important that you visit your local auto repair shop before leaving on such a long trip. As the heat rises, have your car checked for any minor issues. By catching potential problems early, it can prevent more expensive issues down the road. Especially check the battery, the brake system, the tire pressure, the coolant, wiper blades and air conditioning; as these are the parts of the car that are most impacted during the warmer months. Pack for emergencies: sometimes emergencies can happen and you need to be prepared for this possibility before you set out on a long car ride. Plan for the unexpected, it is a good idea to keep extra water, a snack, jumper cables and a first-aid kit inside of your car. You should also have a blanket, flashlight and some extra batteries just in case. If you are carrying a cellphone, a car charger will also be very useful and come in handy when you need to call for help. Bringing extra cash, duct tape and maps of the areas you are travelling though, is also recommended. Pack for fun: long car rides can get boring quickly, so make sure you bring along some items for fun. Bringing along books, video games, a laptop or portable DVD player can take away from the familiar and nagging “are we there yet?” Drive safely: once you are ready and have hit the road, it is important that you drive safely. Everyone knows the benefits of wearing a seatbelt, not drinking and driving, and not using your cellphone; but one of the more uncommon dangers of driving is fatigue. Be sure not to let yourself get overtired, though most times people don’t even realize how tired they are. Try to stick to your usual sleeping routine and don’t drive overnight, or take turns driving with other passengers who had time to sleep during the daytime. Most importantly, pick a place, figure out how to get there and go have fun!

EVERYTHING FOOD

pairing wines with the grill WRITTEN BY NANCY STELL With the lazy days of summer upon us our BBQ’s are fired up and we are all enjoying the relatively simple dishes we are able to create and pairing a good wine is just as easy! Usually the main ingredient is a protein with a seasoning created from a good marinade, rub or sauce. Choose your wine based on the dominant flavor and how hearty the food is. Chicken and white-fleshed fish pairs well with a lighter wine while sausages and burgers are best served with a more robust wine. Rose wines are one of the most versatile and food friendly wines to choose from and contrary to what many believe, rose wines do not necessarily mean sweet and sugary. Many today fall into the category of “dry” and offer a very good wine for the money. Here’s an easy recipe to make Citrus Fruit Sangria for this summers entertaining. You will need: 1 bottle of dry, white wine 2 tablespoons of brandy 3 oranges 2 lemons 2 limes 1 litre of Pineapple Juice 1/2 litre of Club Soda Pour your wine into a large pitcher. Thinly slice two oranges and add them to the pitcher. Cut one lemon and one lime into wedges and squeeze all the juices and then add to the pitcher. Use the remaining orange, lemon and lime as garnish. Pour in 2 tablespoons of brandy and 1 litre of pineapple juice. Just before you are ready to serve add the ½ litre of club soda. Pour into glasses filled with ice and garnish with the remaining fruit.

summer safety for your pets WRITTEN BY NANCY STELL The great outdoors, it’s something we all enjoy every summer and often with our four legged companions; however, not without risk so take heed on how to protect your loyal friend this year. Contrary to what many people believe, not all dogs can swim! And taking them out boating with you without a properly fitted life jacket can spell disaster if they were to fall in the water. Like their human counterparts, even the strongest swimmers can get caught in fast moving currents, strong undertows and high waves. So keep your dog safe this summer when out boating with a well-fitted life vest… it just might make the difference between life and death. Did you know that the average life expectancy of an outdoor cat is only 5 years! Where an indoor cat can live well up to 20 years these days. The number one reason is that outdoor cats are exposed to so many more health and safety issues, than the indoor felines. Busy streets, poisons from home garden products, car and motor products and trash, are just a few of the hazards they are up against. Free roaming cats are also at risk of contracting serious infectious diseases from other cats they encounter. FIV and FeLV are transmitted from one infected cat to another and are fatal to felines. Other dangers include dogs and wild animals as well as getting lost. HOT HOT HOT is the only way to describe the inside of your parked car and if you have left your four-legged friend inside, it could turn deadly within MINUTES! With an outside temperature of 90F (32C) degrees in only 10 minutes the inside temperature of your car will be 110F (43C) degrees and in 20 minutes it will be 120F (48C) degrees. Cracking the window has very little effect on the rising heat inside your car, so in no time your pet can be in serious trouble. SOLUTION! Don’t EVER leave your pet in your car during the hot summer days!
