James Barnes <editor@out-in-thailand.com> SHOUT OUT ! December 2011 You

There are some gay Scrooges out there. Smug that in Thailand, December 25th is not a public holiday, they feel that they are somehow liberated by not having to be full of seasonal cheer and goodwill to all men. I am not one of them. I am more yah-bum-hug than bah-hum-bug. So, Merry Christmas to YOU! Happy Birthday to Cover Girl Karen. Also in this issue, Hunky Brit Brendano Lee, the Art of Chiang Mai and all your festive favourites. We’ve redesigned our guide section format this month so please let us know if there are any updates we need to make at mapsandlistings@out-in-thailand.com. Best wishes,

James Barnes

Kindest Regards, GF, New Zealand. Dear GF, Many ha ppy returns to Thai land and Merry Ch JB. ristmas to you!

The cover of your November edition is a complete success. On all levels, it stands shoulder to shoulder with the cover of international magazines, gay or not, on any global news stand. In pure marketing terms the image of Chaiwat Thongsaan demands attention, the graphics know their place and brilliantly play out the theme of imposed letters on sportswear while the grey on grey tones are swanky. The success of this cover also reminds us to commend you for not objectifying Asian men ever in any of your editions. The range and quality of your articles are now an essential component of our monthly literary diet but thanks also to you and your designer for making the layout into works of art. Bold splashes of ink across pages to frame clean text and image, each article carrying its own graphic style while being a stylistic team player ensures a smashing visual fix. Dividing the magazine into two with the repeat of the cover is clever while restraining advert content in the first half is courageous and interestingly allows the advertisements in the destinations section - bless the advertisers - to look and work a whole lot better. OUT continues to lift the game. SP & JP (Phuket) Dear SP & JP, genuinely humble thanks to you from all at OUT iT. JB

OUT on the Dance Floor

Beat Box Single File By Jimmy Newsum

Summer may have come to an end, but that doesn’t mean the heat on gay dance floors will be turning down. Clubs are working overtime to keep floors burning. Here are the top scorchers being played now...

“Mix Magic Music” Sugar House Crew After a two-year hiatus, Tony Moran makes his triumphant return to the dance floor with an album fully penned by the Grammy nominated producer/remixer. Clearly meant to embrace the soul, sympathy and conviction of club music, the cd is packed with several diva gems all destined to become dance floor staples. Jennifer Holiday’s “Magic” and Deborah Cox’s “Tenderness” are particular stand outs. “World Keeps Turning” Sylvia Tosun Her tenth dance floor release, “World Keeps Turning” has the strength to match the success of Tosun’s “Push n Pull”, a song that climbed all the way to number one on Billboard’s club chart. It’s a marked departure from the ethereal and subdued tracks Tosun has become known for, showing a stronger side to Tosun’s 10

voice. She even manages to belt out some notes, proving this girl can sing. “Neva Eva Eva” Faith Michaels Michaels admits Neva Eva Eva is the song she wanted to write but couldn’t. Paralyzed by the success of her summer smash, Fetish, Michael’s was fearful she might forever be a one trick pony. Luckily, The Rhythm Rehab boys came to her rescue and produced a killer song that fans are going to love. Musically, Neva Eva Eva has the intensity and power of Fetish but its message to define yourself by your own standards – and no one else’s - stands strong on its own.

pop culture. It is Elephant’s first single since signing to record label, Scruffy Records, and displays real artistic growth for a band that is best known for tales of rowdy bathroom stalls, heroin binges, and month-long hunger strikes. While some may say Queer Nation borders on activism – and they wouldn’t be wrong – the track is provocative, no holds barred and fun to listen to. “Touch Me” D Alexander “Touch Me” is a hands-inthe-air romp that will pull everyone to the dance floor this season. Penned by the artist, it is the follow-up to his summer debut “Beautiful”. In it, D Alexander sheds the electronic R&B sound of his past, opting instead for a fast moving disco track that expresses his pas-

sion for life, love and lust. It’s another wellproduced, empowering track from a young out artist who is undoubtedly one to watch.

Bangkok’s a Christmas Cracker!

The price range is generally 2,500 THB to 3,000 THB and most require advance reservations. By Barang

While many expats head back to Europe or North America for the Christmas and New Year holidays to be with family or friends, many of us prefer to stay home in Bangkok. Bangkok is a fabulous treat of festive fun during the holiday season. If you go out to the malls, Paragon, Central World, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Central Chitlom, Central Silom, Gaysorn and Emporium, you will think you are back home in the west. Christmas trees everywhere, bright lights, Christmas music and holiday cheer are in abundance. If you look hard enough you may even see Santa Claus! Granted there is very little snow on the ground, ( if it is snow you want then stop by at Babylon Sauna for their Christmas Eve Foam party) or mistletoe on the trees, but still all in all, Christmas is wonderful in Bangkok. Go into any Villa, Foodland or Tops Market and you will find turkeys, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and nutmeat, everything you need to prepare your own traditional Christmas dinner. All the major hotels have fantastic buffets for you to try. What could be better than sitting on the Chao Phraya River and enjoying a fabulous festive fare with your friends? 12

The Plaza Athenee Hotel on Wireless Road has one of the best Christmas Buffets in the area. Everything you can imagine is there for you, turkey, ham, lobster, shrimp, and free flow sparkling wine. The Sheraton Royal Orchid, located at River City right on the Chao Phraya River, is superb, their Christmas spread is second to none, and you can eat right on the water. The Shangri-La Hotel on the river is great, you can sit inside or out, the buffet is great, with all the Christmas favourites, you expect. There are so many fabulous five Star Hotels to choose from, and they all have spectacular Holiday buffets.

On Christmas Day, try Telephone Pub, Balcony Pub, Sphinx Restaurant, on Soi Duangthawee, Maxi’s Restaurant or Dick’s Café for a great traditional Christmas dinner, and don’t forget the Tarntawan Hotel on Suriwong Road. Sitting outside on the terraces of your favorite pub drinking a nice cold or hot Eggnog, wow, what more could you want?

be packed all night. Not to be outdone is Suriwongse Roads’ own Soi Duangthawee (Boyz Town) Maxi/s Restaurant and Dick’s Café, along with all the great Go-Go bars, pulling out all the stops with great “shows”. Check out our maps and listings to locate venues and have a ball!

In the evenings, take the Skytrain to Siam (this is the interchange stop), wander around the malls for a while, and then walk over to Thanon Rajdamri, opposite Gaysorn Plaza on the way to Silom. Starting at the Hyatt Hotel the street festooned with festive decorations, the Peninsula Shopping Center and Four Seasons Hotel are fabulous; you would think you are on the streets of New York, London or Paris. The Christmas festivities are fantastic at Central World too. New Years Eve in Bangkok is awesome. So much choice, so much to do, so little time. The whole city is a party! If you head out to Central World you can join the thousands of revelers for the Countdown to 2012. The big hotels have great parties lined up, and if you pick a 5 Star on the River, the fireworks there are spectacular. All the pubs, restaurants and bars in the Silom / Suriwongse area have great parties too: Silom Soi 2, DJ Station and JJ Park will be standing room only- drink and dance there until the early hours. Silom Soi 2/1, G.O.D. nightclub has drinks, entertainment and dancing until 6 am. Silom Soi 4, Telephone Pub, Balcony Pub, and Sphinx Restaurant will 13

Of Gerbils and Men

By John Howe

We’ve all heard the stories of gerbils and other small rodents being inserted into the most intimate of orifices but I remain sceptical. However this report from the Los Angeles Times would appear to place some credence on the practice. Please don’t try this at home:

“In retrospect, lighting the match was my big mistake, but I was only trying to retrieve the gerbil”, Eric Tomaszewski told bemused doctors in the burns unit of Salt Lake City Hospital. Tomaszewski, and his partner Andrew “Kiki” Farnum, were admitted for emergency treatment after a felching session had gone seriously wrong. “I pushed a cardboard tube up his rectum and slipped Raggot, our gerbil, in,” explained Tomaszewski. “As usual, Kiki shouted “Armageddon” my cue that he’d had enough. I tried to retrieve Raggot but he wouldn’t come out again, so I peered into the tube and struck a match, thinking the light might attract him.” 14

At a hushed press conference, a hospital spokesman described what happened next. The match ignited a pocket of intestinal gas and a flame shot out of the tube setting fire to Mr Tomaszewski’s hair and burning his face. It also set fire to the gerbil’s fur and whiskers, which in turn ignited a larger pocket of gas further up the intestinal tract, propelling the gerbil out like a cannonball. Tomaszewski suffered second-degree burns and a broken nose from the impact of the gerbil, while Farnum suffered second degree burns to his anus and rectum. And with that thought I wish you a very merry Christmas/happy New Year.

Samui Pride Christmas Fun Saturday 17 December will be double fun evening for gay visitors and locals on Koh Samui. The regular Bowling Night is organized by Samui Pride, a monthly event that attracts Samui residents and visitors from around the world to the Major Bowl at Tesco Lotus Chaweng Branch- balls start rolling at 8 pm so arrive early to get on a team. After the bowls, the crowd will make its way into Chaweng and the K Club Bar for a special Samui Pride Christmas Costume Party with a cash prize of 10,000 THB to the best fancy dress.

The festive fun at K Club (see our map) kicks off at 11 pm and ends in the small hours- the special drinks menu and star DJ will ensure a successful fundraiser for The Samui School for Special Needs. This school looks after some of the most vulnerable children on the island, with a range of special needs like Downs Syndrome, learning difficulties, autism and physical disabilities. The school receives no government support and is wholly de-

pendent on good will and donations. Samui Pride’s last event was a Beach Volleyball Competition, which raised 5,000 THB. This money is currently being spent on meeting the schools own ‘wish list’ of essential maintenance and repairs. “And it don’t seem a day too much...” Happy Birthday Karen Karen was born on the 4th of December 1931, in Sydney, Australia. There began a life destined to take her from Sydney to Istanbul, New York to Paris, performing in front of the cream of the entertainment world. On 4th December 2011, there will be the mother of all birthday bashes at The Venue in Jomtien.

16

Matt Munroe, the singing star who performed “From Russia to Love” in the 1963 James Bond film, said, “l have to meet that person”, Karen, gracious as ever, accepted the invitation to dine and enjoyed another starry evening whilst entertaining the table and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Johnny Ray, Rosemary Clooney and Debbie Reynolds. Some of those names have since faded, but back in the 60’s these people proved you had to have talent to survive in show business. Karen’s talent is evergreen. At the age of 80, when rnost of us have taken off the wig and moisturized the makeup off our faces, to sit back to enjoy the fruits of our labours, Karen still performs. The sound of an overture makes her pulse quicken and there is a rush of blood when the M.C. announces, “And now the star of the show, the main reason for you being here, the one and only...Karen!” The thunderous applause is addictive for this stately octogenarian; a frocked galleon that sails the stage to delight.

The first time Karen “frocked up”, she was 18 years old, and most demure, like a Princess! However, she thrived on the competition for the most spectacular appearance and became increasingly bold and flamboyant. Karen, renowned for her dignified manner, was the ideal hostess for the many “gay” venues that would later drench the harbourside capital. The now famous great white way known as Oxford St in Sydney was described as Karen’s Castle, where the queen of Sydney’s gay life and her followers decreed new laws, much to the frustration of the establishment. Those laws freed up the lives of thousands who would later become the voice of an emerging new era of gay liberation. Karen was the logical choice to reign over her new “Kingdom”. She opened a club called “The Purple Onion” in Sydney and Karen starred, M.C’d and was the guiding hand of the shows’ artistic production. The partners of the new club expressly wanted this, not only as a vehicle for artistic expression, as well as a place to call their own, but also as a venue where Karen’s humor, wit, and an appreciation of glamour would be applauded by her followers. Dressing as a woman in her daily life by this time had consumed Karen, there would be no turning back. Living like a real lady was the art. 17

The Sydney “gay scene” had found a home, a place where people could be themselves. The club quickly became a ‘must see’ when in town. Its notoriety had spread to mainstream society and soon straight people were demanding front row seats. The club became a famous celebrity haunt; any night could see Rudolf Nureyev, clinking champagne glasses together with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, or Frank and his bodyguard. A television film crew organized a documentary to show the success of this new generation, filming the cast getting ready as well as the show itself, Karen was asked, “What’s going to happen when the novelty of you dressing up wears off? What do you think you’ll be doing when you’re older?” Many at the time doubted drag was here to stay. Karen’s life is the answer. 18

Sir Paul McCartney

HRH with Hat !

Karen’s creative flair is legendary, spending hours trimming, cutting and sewing to get just the right look and adding her own special outrageous style for her adoring public. They are never disappointed. After nightly performances, Karen with other cast members went out to relax, have a few drinks, and catch up with friends and to see who was in town that week. These people would turn up at the club, wearing glamorous outfits. On many occasions, fashion writers would sketch Karen’s designs, which would turn up the following days in the magazines and fashion papers, and heralded as the “in” fashion of the season, Karen did not complain: she confused them by complimenting their taste in fashion!

Karen also had her own television show. Being a qualified milliner, she would create outrageous hats for the racing crowd; one famous doctor’s wife had a whole collection flown to England and wore them at Ascot. They caught the eye of the paparazzi, and made the next day’s headlines in the London Times. “Wear chooks on your head, colour your hair purple and green, whatever you do don’t try to compete with the Australian, Dr Northcote’s wife’s hat!” Karen ran her own successful millinery business for many years as well as performing nightly. Credited as Australia’s first professional milliner starting at the age of 16, at The June, a landmark millinery business in the heart of Sydney, she was happy to share artistic ideas with colleagues. One such dear friend is Freddie Fox, who went on to become famous as milliner to the royal household, HRH the Queen mother, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd as well as many other ladies of the royal court, and still is.

One of Karen’s first appearances on stage in Thailand happened some 10 years ago at a piano bar in Pattaya. There were other acts on the same card that night and Karen was billed in between the fire-eating act and the magician! Karen decided to open with one of her favourites, her signature tune: “My Way.” A large crowd had gathered and the show was very entertaining. When it was time for Karen’s number, the lights slowly softened, a voice announced, “and now the star of the show- won’t you please give a warm welcome to Karen...” As Karen entered the stage, the musical introduction began, the audience applauded, and then Frank Sinatra began singing! Ever the professional, Karen saw the opportunity for a few laughs and carried on until the number finished. The crowd loved it. The Thais still don’t know what to make of Karen, but they love her all the same. 19

Johnny Ray

Jerry Herman a well-known musical songwriter wrote the music and lyrics to such great musicals as Mame, Hello Dolly, Le Cage Aux Folles, and Dear World, but somehow he could have been writing about Karen’s life. Karen is your Aunt Mame, she’s Dolly, and she’s the owner of La Cage. Every day that goes by Karen cherishes, and no day is wasted, she understands “Life is a banquet.” When Karen decided to become involved in a serious relationship, it just happened to be with a person 13 years youngermaybe in the hope that he could keep up with her lifestyle. That relationship has blossomed and endured for more than 48-years, and is as strong today as it was when a 16 year old boy from Bondi first set eyes on the person that was to be such a big influence on his life. 20

Rosemary Clooney

Frank Sinatra

It is often said, “You only get out of life what you put into it.” lf that’s true, this person is due rich rewards. Karen has spent the last 80 years contributing to positive outcomes, not only for herself but also for many around her. She touches the heart, lifts an otherwise dull existence, is so willing to smile in the face of adversity and fights for what she believes is the right to be recognised as who we are and not what society demands. Join in the celebration of Karen’s 80th birthday at The Venue, be pleased and excited to be in such illustrious company and help turn another page in the book of this fabulous woman. 21

Mäkinen exhibits five lithographic prints called “Monuments”. Partly transparent constructions are versions of monuments of dictatorships in the modern western society where the politics of suppression is often hidden behind “good deeds” – not revealing its corrupted, nationalist, economic or phobic real reason.

BRENDANO LEE

Brendano Lee is a rare guy. He is a talented actor, model and athlete who looks even better in person than he does through the lens. There is always a suspicion that people with all these gifts are self-absorbed egoists but Brendano is, quite simply, a lovely man, as James Barnes discovered when they met in Pattaya.

His smile is as wide as his well-developed shoulders and the handshake is firm and confident. Born in Derry, Northern Ireland 26 years ago, his family moved to London when he was six. Brendano attended the London Oratory School Hammersmith and West London College where he gained a GNVQ in Business Studies and studied drama. He has worked as an interior designer too but he is not just stunning good looks, arts and brains, there’s brawn there too. He is a highly competitive athlete and won over 100 Gold medals and trophies, at competitive events throughout the UK. He holds a third Degree Black 26

Belt in Judo and was crowned South England Judo champion, 2001. These days, you can see him soccer training withthe “Chonburi Sharks”- a top team here in Thailand. “We moved to Thailand two years ago,” he says, sipping some coffee before continuing: “We had been to Thailand for family holidays.” He and his father now both live in Pattaya and Brendano loves it. “The food is smashing and I love Thai massage and the Thai people.” Together they run Pattaya Aquatics at the Index Mall on Sukhumvit Road and you can see some of their stunning installations at the Pattaya Immigration Office. (http://www.pattayaquatics. com).

Brendano’s easy manner does not hide his natural, charming, shyness- not the first attribute associated with a top model. “School friends often complimented me on my physique during swimming and other sports, saying how great my body was and asking how they could get the same results. That inspired me and my father was always saying that I should be a model.” His friends encouraged him to be an actor when he made them laugh by using different accents and doing impersonations. “I got into acting because people said I’m funny and that my talent should be put in front of the camera.” High flying contacts include Ricky Martin and Brendano is currently managed by Tina Forbes who is based in Los Angeles, California, and is from the Forbes family. Brendano has performed in several commercials for Isuzu and Leo Beer. His rock hard, chiselled body can also be seen in movies including, “Oba the Last Samurai” where he played the role of a U.S. Marine. His profile has been raised further with recent exposure in BBINT International, winning model of the month at modelscouts.com, Homme Magazine Asia featured him in an eightpage spread and he modelled in the Amat Men’s Underway Fashion Show. Surely, he must live in a gym to maintain that degree of physical perfection. “No, I actually only work out three times a week. Because I’ve been athletic since I was young, this is easier to achieve and maintain without many hours of working out.”

Time saved pumping iron is dedicated to hard work: I like photo shoots, being on movie sets, getting things done.” He says that he likes to better himself and always strives to achieve more. Better than perfect sounds unlikely but this eminently personable young man will probably pull it off. Brendano’s Christmas will be in Pattaya, “I like to eat my Christmas dinner with family and friends- I love Christmas pudding, opening presents and going to the beach for a swim.” 27

OUT in Underwear The internet is the answer if you cannot find what you want in Thailand… Jailhouse Jock ES’s New Line is Released (For Good Behavior) By Mickey Reiser

ES is popular for its provocative ad campaigns, and their latest does not disappoint. Shot in Segovia, Spain in an abandoned prison, images depict models in playfully sporty fun-wear from the new collection. The bold colors and chiseled frames of the models pop out against the drab backdrop of the prison walls and bars. “The theme of this years shoot was freedom,” says designer Ed Suñer. “Freedom to express yourself with color. Freedom to live the way you choose to live without restrictions.” 30

“We should all be thankful that we enjoy greater freedoms today than our grandparents ever did. However, we still have a long way to go. Until we all have equal rights, we need to keep active in the fight.” ES Collection knows how to fight. The brand continues to thrive despite the onslaught of copycat brands ripping off their designs.

In additional to playful new athletic wear offerings, this season ES is unveiling The Wonderbrief and Wonderboxer version 2.0 - a second generation of their most popular collection – as well as the latest addition to the line, The Wonderslim. All three lines are available at LAJock.com. “After four years on the market, we modified the Wo n d e r b r i e f and boxer for a more sophisticated look. The new briefs offer a molded and seamless effect with removable padding. “ “Let freedom reign as ES leads the future of men’s active wear,” proclaims Suñer. Visit LAJock. com. 31

Part 5; Survivor Time By Dodger

After a month of daily visits to see Thep in Nong Palai Prison, a woman approached and spoke to me in English. It was music to my ears after spending 3 hours a day sitting around a crowd of Thais who did nothing more than stare at me. She introduced herself as Wan. We became friends immediately. Wan was one of a few women who were daily visitors. Unfortunately, the majority of inmates have people visiting them on a monthly basis or not at all. Based on the total population of Nong Palai (+2,000) and the number of visitors I observed each day- less than 20% of the inmates were receiving visitors. Wan’s husband had been convicted to a 2 year sentence for yaba, similar to 32

Thep. Wan owns a Buddhist gift shop in Pattaya but lives in Nong Palai only 10 minutes from the prison. As we sat and talked, others from the crowd joined us. “Where is he from? Is he visiting a Thai or farang? Is he married to the person he is visiting? Does he live in Thailand?” Wan answered all their questions. Their stares turned to warm smiles. It became increasingly obvious to me that the Thais had a high level of appreciation for my actions and my visits even started to become enjoyable after that interaction.

from the prisoner is foggy and scratched from age making it difficult to see through to the other side. After a while, Thep and I knew the best seats and some fast footwork on both of our parts secured this spot each day. Both of us played the same role: caretaker and motivator. Thep never once complained about anything. He entered the visiting section with a smile and wore that smile until our conversation was finished. I attempted to do the same and kept our talk positive and as upbeat as possible. He was filled with remorse. Right now, it was survival time. I was able to set up a support system for Thep, which he would need when I left Thailand. After learning the prison system, I was able to secure a trusty job for him. A court lawyer had connections with the Nong Palai top brass, who were sweetened. It took 3 weeks for the job to come through and Thep actually found out about it a day before I did- I left my mobile phone in the condo the day the lawyer tried to contact me – and ended up getting the news directly from Thep.

A smile was beaming across his face as he entered the visitors section. He was so proud. Talking quickly, he explained that he was given the job of completing documentation for the female inmates, e.g., daily food orders, requests to see lawyers, etc., which gave him the freedom to walk around without being chaperoned. He said with an excited voice that they must have noticed his writing skills to be given such a job. He was the envy of the ladyboy block and now had more respect from prisoners and staff. I sat there for 14 of our 15 minutes listening to him. It was the best moment of my holiday. I never let on to him how the job came to be – and never will. He now has a productive and responsible job that will help to pass his time and build his self-esteem. Mission accomplished. Next Month, Part 6: Back to the USA Register free at www.out-in-thailand.com to read earlier installments.

My visits with Thep lasted 15 minutes. These are very short minutes when you have to wait 2-1/2 hours to see a prisoner. There are 20 stools and 20 telephones. The glass that separates you 33

Who Wants........... To Waste a Lot of Time? Every ham who has ever trod the boards knows about the dramatic pause. A few steps onstage..................... a brief halt that gets everyone’s attention before delivering the first line. Every child of the fifties remembers those cinema serials that always had a cliff-hanger which guaranteed a week of worry about the heroes’ fate and a return to the theatre to witness the miraculous escape from certain death. And today, every TV viewer, in every corner of the world has to endure the device, now so annoyingly overused........... that the currency has been devalued. Chris Tarrant instigated the recent resurgence of the dramatic pause on the (original) British version of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ This show was franchised all over the globe, carbon copy clones popped up on hundreds of millions of screens, faithfully reproducing every nuance of the format, topping ratings in every country. “And the correct answer is...............” cut from serious host to anxious contestant, cut from anxious contestant to suspenseful audience, cut from suspenseful audience to smug host, “.........coming up after the break!” Now.................. they’re all at it; ‘Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?’, to name but the worst. And not just quiz shows. All those reality game shows 34

where humiliated, aggressive and vulgar (‘I ain’t gonna get thrown under no bus’ and ‘I’m here to kick some butt’) contestants face elimination are dangled on the thread of dramatic pause with the inevitable heartbeat soundtrack, insisting that this is a matter of life or death. Masterchef US/Australia/Junior, America’s/ Australia’s/Britain’s Next Top Model, America’s/Britain’s/Thailand’s Got Talent, the Idols and X Factors all do it along with ...................... many, many more. All those seconds in ............. all those countries; all those............... countless millions of viewers, all that.................. adds up to whole lifetimes of wasted humanity. Don’t we have something better to do with our time?

AUSTEN MORRIS ASSOCIATES FINANCIAL PLANNING & WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Be respectful when handling Thai currency! All currency in Thailand, paper and coins, bears a portrait of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Remember that Thailand does enforce the national lèse majesté laws. These laws expressly prohibit any act - verbal, physical or written, that shows insolent or disrespectful behaviour toward any member of the Royal family. Remember: DO NOT s tep on a coin to stop it from rolling away. DO NOT s tep on a Thai banknote to stop it from blowing away. DO NOT t hrow a note or coin in anger towards another person. DO NOT t ear, burn or otherwise deface a note or coin. 38

These acts can easily been perceived as disrespectful toward his Majesty The King, or another member of the Royal family (and would be highly offensive to any Thai person that witnessed such an occurrence), and in keeping with lèse majesté laws, you may be subject to unpleasant consequences. Please show respect accordingly. If you need any pecuniary problem solved, email Jeremy Ring: money@outin-thailand.com

Ask Darika Dear 90%, Darika hears you loud and clear. My second husband was very Methodist. Well in to his eighties he used to poke me with that miserable thing of his every single night absent even a pretense of foreplay. He died and left me money, which I doubt is the outcome you are hoping for. I’m spending mine to buy the orgasms I missed out on. Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com

Darika Darling, Almost one year ago I met a gorgeous guy and fell in love quickly. He has a brilliant education, comes from a good family, has impeccable social skills and has more money than I do. He is twelve years younger, which I especially like. He is perfect in every respect except for one thing. He is 110% top. In the beginning I consented to be on the bottom just because I like the guy so much. What I have not told him is that I am 90% top myself, don’t enjoy getting ploughed every night, and that I dream of flipping him over onto his back. This isn’t going to last. Help! 40

In my experience, “topness” is state of mind and a routine, a bad habit if you will. But habits can be broken. Your friend may not react as positively as I have to a frank explanation of your concern, so why not say that your hemorrhoids are acting up and that you want to please him in new and different ways. While most men love to believe they are really creative in the sack, Darika has met precious few who do not follow the same script over and over. So why not change the script, darling? Costumes? Toys? Educational movies? Sharing a third partner who you can both top? Don’t do anything the same twice. Once you sense he is feeling liberated, he might enjoy what you can do with a lubricated finger and that could lead to an amazing selfdiscovery for him. I remember my first time fondly. He might be grateful some day that you gave him his. On the other hand, it might mean an ugly break-up. You have to decide whether having his legs around your neck is worth the gamble. Love Darika.

Impotence is Important the smoking gun.

By Doc John

M

One common problem men complain about in the erection department is not getting one. Not being able to get or keep an erection is called erectile dysfunction (ED) or sometimes impotence. At any one time it has been reckoned that one in ten men suffer ED, from about one in 13 at the age of 30 and increasing throughout life. But don’t despair help is at hand. An occasional failure to get an erection is not a problem but if it happens often it should not be ignored. ED can be a warning of other health problems like: - Heart disease - Narrowed arteries - High blood pressure - Diabetes - Heavy drinking and smoking - Drug side effects or abuse. Besides these physical causes psychology also affects your ability to get an erection. Performance anxiety

will worsen the ED; it has an incidence of about 25%. If you get an erection while masturbating or at night but not with your partner then the problem is a psychological one. The answer is to relax and enjoy the moment. Many men believe that ED must be suffered and there is no treatment or cure, this is not true. There are many causes of ED and the majority can be successfully treated. Drugs like Viagra or Cialis will help get an erection but they have side-effects and sometimes very serious ones. Do not self medicate with these and always seek medical advice before taking them. A word to smokers; you are 50% to 80% more likely to be impotent than non-smokers so give it up to get it up.

CITYGUIDES LISTINGS +MAPS BANGKOK, PATTAYA, PHUKET, CHIANG MAI & KOH SAMUI

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists. Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Senso and Sanctuary Spa by A feature among many massage spas. Tarntawan Place is a superb hotel close to the business district and nightlife. Balcony Pub is a popular watering hole and if meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar. Up2 Salon will make you beautiful! College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to

those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 CafĂŠ, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! Koh Samed is an ideal paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach- very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd at weekends and stay at Silver Sand Resort- www.silversandsamed.com. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand. com 45

OUT in Koh Samui J

Jungle covered craggy hills, roads weaving through lush coconut plantations, huge trees, orchids, butterflies, quiet beaches, fresh local fruits. Koh Samui is the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys, especially couples who kick back, recharge in spas or health resorts, lounge around their villa pool, take long beach walks, sip a cocktail or three in a rustic beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit with the local guys.

Digital Dating! Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening with gay bars, disco, cabaret, island tours and as the regional spa capital, massage and body treatments. The center of gay day/nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end opposite Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club a well-established gay only spa, the market leader for a range of quality massage techniques, herbal body treatments, facials, manicure/pedicure. Down the soi beside Solo Bar is K Club, a recently refurbished, lively gay bar and Together Massage & Spa and Mekkala Men Spa promise to rejuvenate you. In south Chaweng, opposite the Centara 54

Resort is Boy Zone a smart gay bar with a nightly dance show at 11.30 pm and take away staff. Further out of Chaweng in Cheong Mon, close to Sala Samui is Saiwon Mens Spa men only massage and body treatments. From midnight to 2 pm Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul disco/bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music and mixed crowds. For an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at gay venues or ask your hotel for a copy. OUT in Chiang Mai C

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom is renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations. Try the superb La Fourchette (French) and Prego (Italian & Thai) restaurants inside the moated, old city walls and the inviting Yokka Dok bar/restaurant/. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Circle Pub has hunky guys on stage and The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s gem with famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Gemini Massage and Marn Mai Chai Kha Massage have regular promotions and are recommended. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars. Check out Sangdee Gallery & Cafe and on Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Soho Bar and Guesthouse who serve incomparable New

Orleans food. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. West Restaurant is also gay owned- specialists in great deserts! Santitham is not far away, with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops. ZII Condom is the place to go for condoms, lube and more. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more, The Blues Club, Mystic Orient and Sanctuary Spa are all worthy of a visit or three! XS & JK Solutions is your one stop solution for all national and local real estate and legal issues. Independent Travel provides a trusted, price-integrated service. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings, www.radchada.com and www.out-in-thailand.com 59

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex, with most of the gay (friendly) hotels & guesthouses, and cabaret/go-go bars, a gay sauna, disco’s, go-go and host bars, restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, etc. Also popular are the outdoor “Beer Bars” of which the most popular is Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good 68

Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Siam Hotel is just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. Aspara Residence has modern Thai style rooms. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com

The Minotel offers 20 comfortable and air conditioned ensuite rooms in the centre of Patong. Its just 3 minutes walk to the beach or to the Paradise complex. All rooms have a fridge, cable TV and free wi-fi.

You will love your stay at APSARA Residence. Our Guesthouse is ideally positioned so that all Phuket’s places of interest are nearby and you can easily access the nightlife, dining and shopping options and Patong’s main beach is just a short, leisurely stroll away. Tel: 076-342160

starts 9:30 PM

P

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets.

In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the very popular Sansuk Sauna & Guesthouse and the newly opened, luxurious, Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. 76

The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. Getaway to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach- very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd at weekends and stay at Silver Sand Resortwww.silversandsamed.com. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com

Happy Hour from 8:30pm to 9:30pm soft/hot drinks, beers and regular mixed drinks only
