Your letters in print and online editor@out-in-thailand.com
Dear James For a long while we thought you had taken the design and content barrier for OUT as high as it could go and that was pretty high, then bingo! November OUT lifts it a couple of meters higher. Your covers are always attention grabbing, especially Nov Cher in full Halloween. The Nov issue offers many pages of excellent text to image to negative space relationships which are simply superb [pages 14 - 17, 25/26, 33/34] all very smart, sophisticated by any standards and the flesh fillers are an elegant sidekick. The guide section must drive any designer crazy but here your tight table format, advert placement and care to ensure this carries the high standards of the articles section is a big success. First rate idea moving publisher info up front. Your publication shifts the paradigm of gay in Thailand, an important message to be read. Kind regards ST (Bangkok) Dear ST, thank you for taking the time to write. Be assured that we will never stop striving to improve our appeal to our domestic readership or promoting Thailand to our ever increasing international audience. JB.

Dear James, I was outraged to read how my genuine concerns were distorted by BB in his patronising response to my September letter. He began by offering me the “benefit of the doubt”, condescendingly implying that I had little knowledge of the origins of the Buddhist swastika and the Nazi swastika, used to perpetrate mass genocide and a WORLD war that affected the entire globe, including Thailand. Having spent four years teaching in Thailand and half my degree is in history, I do know the difference. What I saw was the Nazi emblem. How dare BB suggest I apologise for being upset by this and accuse me of a lack of “cultural awareness”. I agree, the violation of Thai culture exhibited by ignorant tourists is reprehensible, but so is this. It’s a two way street. Cultural awareness is about tolerance and sensitivity to the various cultures in a given locality. Something I know well from living in cosmopolitan London. I wonder if BB would condone me wearing images of Pol Pot, the killing fields of Cambodia or the Burmese sacking of Ayutthya in a London nightclub? BB’s claim that the young man had no knowledge of the meaning of what he was wearing is naive. Knowledge of the holocaust and WORLD War Two is not “Western/Eurocentric” The clue is in the name - WORLD war. I suggest BB takes a trip to Kanchanaburi war cemetery if he truly believes that World War Two had no impact on Thailand. Not to mention the countless international cinema blockbusters about the subject of the Holocaust - all hits in Thailand and have been repeated on satellite channels. What about the internet? Is BB suggesting that a young, middle class Thai student would not have access to the web that is awash with information about this symbol and the Holocaust? Educated Thai people in international cities do have knowledge of the holocaust, in the same way that educated westerners know of the atrocities committed by tyrants in South East Asia.
9
Why didn’t BB respond to my central question: why choose to wear a Nazi flag on a t-shirt? Even if I concede to BB’s point that it is completely arbitrary and innocuous (which I don’t), a quick Google search would have given all the information he needed. BB cannot defend the indefensible. This young man knew the reaction his t-shirt would cause and wore it regardless. This was evident by the flash of guilt when I confronted him. I do recognise the difference between guilt and loss of face- if he had no idea about what he was wearing and had lost face, he would have reacted differently and more than likely lost his temper. Perhaps this transgression was in retaliation to all those farang who disrespect Thai culture (whom I have also confronted), or maybe just to be provocative. I love Thailand, the warm and welcoming people, the laid back culture, the delicious food, the hospitable climate, the magical festivals and the sense of fun and camaraderie. All these positives far outweigh the negatives and for me there is no choice between here and the West. However, Thailand (like everywhere) is not perfect and there is one underpinning issue to most intercultural difficulties -a distinct lack of respect on both sides. Some Western tourists do arrive in Thailand with shoes attached to their backpacks or they disrespect revered institutions and for that they should be admonished. Wearing a Nazi t-shirt is just as bad and deserves the same contempt. Far from imposing “cultural imperialism”, I am promoting cultural sensitivity and respect on both sides. We live in a global society with an increasingly multicultural population, BB’s concepts of “guests” in a country is outdated and the mantra of the extreme right which was a cause of the holocaust, not my stand against it. The sooner we learn to understand each other, become culturally aware and work together in harmony, the better place the world would be. Peace! JK (Chiang Mai) Dear JK, happy to give you the right to reply. There is a ‘comments’ facility at www.out-in-thailand.com and I invite all readers to continue the debate there. JB.

More Pep With Peptides by Nurse Darika
After reading about RMS Clinic in the September issue of Out In Thailand I was really not quite sure what they do. But the very mention of “anti ageing” therapies got my immediate attention. I have been considering a full face and neck lift, but really do not like the idea of hospitals, pain or a bruised, swollen face for a month, so I am open to alternatives. I have also been having some problems with my facial skin that comes with growing older. In particular I had very dry patches that have been almost like eczema and gave me “face dandruff” regularly. Moisturizers did not help.
12
The handsome doctor at the clinic recommended Peptide Mesotherapy. No, peptides are not a cheerleading squad for a seaside football team. They are amino acids (tiny proteins) that often have medicinal properties. Human growth hormone, silk, and insulin are peptides. In recent years pharmaceutical companies have discovered how to isolate peptides from natural sources or actually manufacture them to cause specific parts of your body to react in specific ways. Mesotherapy means using a micro syringe to inject medication under the skin. An anesthetic gel is applied first, so the procedure is painless. Each treatment requires one vial. I had five treatments, but you can have more or fewer as needed. Half of the vial is administered with the syringe beneath wrinkles and at acupuncture points on the face, then gentle “stippling” in less wrinkled areas. The other half of the vial is sprayed onto the skin. Peptide molecules are very tiny, so they are readily absorbed. You will experience some redness that is usually gone by the next day. The peptide I have been using specifically stimulates the growth of both collagen and elastin, which are the building-block proteins of our skin. Honestly, I was skeptical at first, but my complexion has never looked better. Each treatment has turned back the clock at least one year. If you decide this might help you I also recommend a “Myers Cocktail,” which you get through an IV drip (not on the rocks). It is a concoction of essential nutrients, including about 20
grams of vitamin C, which will put your collagen production into third gear. It is also great for your liver and will help you recover from excessive partying or jetlag. The clinic offers many different kinds of Swiss-manufactured peptide treatments that target specific organs and conditions like obesity, arthritis, migraines, type-2 diabetes, sexual dysfunction, and memory loss. They also offer Botox and filler injections, and the lowest price for thread lifts I have found anywhere—up to 50 threads for 30,000 baht. Slender silk threads are inserted under local anesthetic, and gently pulled upward. They do exactly what a good bra does—lift your sagging stuff back to where it is supposed to be. Threading provides a supportive new architecture for the face, and puts collagen and elastin production into fifth gear. This is a “lunch hour” procedure that requires little or no down time. The threads eventually dissolve. Results are long-lasting but not permanent, however less costly, painful and inconvenient than surgery. “I’ve had enough of being a gay icon! I’ve had enough of this hard work. Since I came out I keep getting all these parts and my career has taken off. I want a quiet life. I’m going back into the closet – but somehow I can’t seem to get in, because it’s absolutely jam-packed full of other actors.”
It took the ubiquitous Sir Ian just 35 years to become an overnight star. Now in his mid- seventies he is a multi –millionaire, who lived for eight years with the stage director Sean Mathias whom he met when the latter was directing him in a screen version of the play Bent (1997). Sir Ian had earlier created the central role of Max, a homosexual who poses as a Jew in a concentration camp so as not to be at the bottom of the pile of abused humanity. In the film (possibly considered too old for the lead) he plays Uncle Freddie. Sadly the film (with the inadequate Clive Owen playing Max) is a dull rendition and shows again that theatre is the antithesis of cinema and that talent in one art form does not easily translate into the other. Even so it heralded in the change of fortunes for McKellen after a prolific
and distinguished stage, TV and big screen career which began back in the 1960s. Hollywood beckoned with the intensely moving Gods and Monsters (1998) in which he starred, (opposite a then young and handsome and fairly slim Brendan Fraser), as the English born director James Whale who had a good career in Hollywood from the earliest days of sound through the 1940s.Whale was gay and made over 20 movies many of them great including The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein and Show Boat. He committed suicide rather than face old age, ill health and what he saw as poverty – drowning himself in his own swimming pool. McKellan was superb as Whale and went on to a rather disturbing role as a fugitive Nazi who is befriended by a small boy – the Apt Pupil of the title. 15
Then came X Men (2000) and of course The Lord of the Rings trilogy to be followed by the Hobbit films – the second part of which opens in Thailand this month. The last fifteen years have made him more widely famous than did earlier triumphs, including a stunning updating of Richard 111 which he adapted and starred in, among many Shakespearian roles. There was also plenty of notable tv work, modern roles such as the title character in Walter and even in recent years six episodes of Coronation Street! All of it good or distinguished provided one glosses over Vicious - a failed tv sit-com about two gay men. His costar was Derek Jacobi, which gave him the chance to play opposite the notable actor who had been the unplucked apple of McKellan’s eye many years previously. He had also played many character roles on the grown up screen in his BT period (before Tolkein) and unsurprisingly his rich voice has featured on the soundtracks of documentaries, shorts and other work. He was Sir Andrew Charleson in the enjoyable satire Plenty and the disgraced politician John Profumo in Scandal (1989). He tackled a bigger villain as Iago in a television version of Othello and the biggest one of all as Hitler in Casualties of War (only Stalin to go one might think). He remarked once that his confidence grew when he came out (aged 49) and one can see in later performances that he is assured, even fearless in his characterisations and it must be said very happy to let his hair down when the occasion arises.
16
His big successes in Hollywood were not his only work there. Others included the engaging Six Degrees of Separation, one of four films where he worked with the talented and charming Bruce Davison (the star of Longtime Companion), although one might be forgiven for not noticing either of them since heavily featured in the key role was a young Will Smith, looking dazzling before whatever happened to him happened. In the same year -1993- McKellan joined the starry cast of And the Band Played On, one of the seemingly progressive films concerned with Aids which might have provoked the actor to comment, ‘Hollywood is a dream factory. I love the way conservatives consider it a bed of radicalism. In reality it could not be more staid if it tried’. With his current eminence he can afford to be outspoken and to pick and choose his roles. And he can look back happily on BBC Play of the month, where successes included Ross and Hay Fever. Or to the more recent revival of Waiting for Godot in London and on Broadway. He has just finished a new Sherlock Holmes film and will be the oldest actor to have played him. Who knows it may finally be the movie which outs the famous detective and his sidekick Dr. Watson?
*The second Hobbit movie starring Sir Ian McKellan opens in Thailand on December 12th. You can see him in Waiting for Godot and No Man’s Land with Patrick Stewart on Broadway through to March 2014.

Christmas Surprises By Kenneth Dobson
Bob thought he did not have any connection to Christmas. It was a religious holiday and he had escaped all that. Elm Grove was long ago. Bob had a new life far from Christmas. He and Suwit, who went by the nickname Fanta (nobody knows why), were planning for New Year’s Eve. Bob imagined they would do the countdown with a big mob somewhere, probably at the Ta Pae Gate in the heart of Chiang Mai. New Year’s Eve was his focus for the season. It was more than a week away. Fanta came bouncing into their apartment, the picture of excitement. When Bob looked up from his day-old edition of the Bangkok Post, trepidation replaced excitement all over Fanta’s countenance. His four months with Bob had not been long enough to instill confidence that he could predict Bob’s reactions. Four months had been enough, however, for Bob to read his boyfriend’s nervousness and guess it had to do with something all worked-out but not yet discussed between them. Bob hoped it wasn’t about a car, again.
19
“You know Nong Bua,” Suwit began. Bob knew. It was the village where Suwit had come from. “You know school,” Suwit pronounced it “sa-coo” but Bob knew. It was time to go for broke. Suwit blurted out, “They want krit-sa-maat.” Bob looked blank. “You know?” Fanta wondered. Bob didn’t know. Nor, of course, did he know after Suwit switched to Thai. But the miracle of communication finally occurred. Suwit had volunteered the two of them to help with a Christmas party at the little village school. Bob was relieved. Many of Suwit’s schemes were complex and expensive, not to mention self-indulgent, excessive and frivolous. There were 3 teachers in Nong Bua School: Kru Laddawan, Kru Yuankaew (called Kru Nit), and Kru John (whose real name was something else). They had been at a loss as to how to show that Nong Bua School was aware that the ASEAN Economic Accords were coming when Nong Bua and Thailand would enter the big wide world. Then Fanta had come to pick up his little sister and he had bragged about his big 20
friend “who looked like Santa Claus.” Ding-dong! Bells went off in three heads simultaneously. Bob was in for surprises. The first was that it would be best to go stay at Nong Bua for the next two days. Why? To get ready for the party. That was the second surprise, that the party would take days of getting ready. The third surprise was three hours later, right after a cup of strong sweet coffee at the school, when he was measured. What for? “Santa-clot.” The bigger surprise was when he was asked by Kru Nit what the program for the party was going to be. Bob Belcher’s career had consisted entirely of car parts in Elm Grove, Kentucky. He had never even planned a birthday party, unless you count one drunken bash he had sprung for about ten years ago. Selling car parts, however, had trained him to be evasive if he had no ideas when confronted with an inquiry. “Well, what do you have in mind?” he parried. Kru John was ready with some ideas. They were clear enough at the beginning: decorate the big room, visit with Santa, sing Christmas songs like “We witch-chew a merry krit-sa-mat” and “Jingle bell, jingle bell”. That got the
three teachers laughing.
red and green Fanta soda pop, naturally.
“What’s funny,” Bob asked. “We used to sing it ‘jingen-ben’,” Kru Laddawan explained. Bob was still too new to realize that final L sounds are pronounced N. He smiled knowingly, just the same.
While they were there, they stopped by a dress shop. Two women were busily attaching red parts of a jacket onto a manikin. When Bob and Fanta appeared, one of them handed Fanta a baggy pair of pants for Bob to try on. There was no real need. The pants were right for any size, but Bob tried to show his cooperative attitude. Then the jacket, bristling with pins, was gingerly slipped on him and approved. On the table were rolls of cotton batting destined for trim and a magazine open to a picture of Santa Claus that explained a lot of things. “Tomorrow,” the seamstress promised.
Kru John had a couple of outdoor games in mind. Then the planning got vague again. The stumbling blocks were two, it turned out. Santa Claus brought presents. Parties needed ice cream. The school had no funds for these things. Fanta had ideas about both of those. So they spent the next hour in a cluttered store that opened onto a big market. Bob had grown concerned about this budget-busting party until Fanta suggested that they buy the 39 kids new socks for Christmas. It was surprising how inexpensive that was. But Bob was surprised by the dawning of Christmas spirit. From deep in his childhood memories he knew that Santa brought fun things, not just socks. There in the store were cardboard posters, each with a dozen plastic sacks of cheap toys and games. Bob bought four panels. Fanta, who had never shown a spark of generosity before, then surprised Bob by offering, “I’ll buy the drinks”;
On the way back to their motorcycle Bob surprised himself by deciding, “We need a Christmas tree.” Fanta drove right to a Big-C that featured four sizes of ready-to-assemble trees. After a night in Suwit’s family home where Bob was surprised by how naturally they appeared to accept him, it was Christmas morning, time to party. The kids were jubilant. They decorated a big room and played Kru John’s games. Then in came resplendent Santa-Bob, surprised at how much fun he was having.

No-one musically alive in the late 60s or early 70s could possibly ignore the uniquely powerful influence of this iconic hero of the rock era. His death, last month, following what appeared to be a successful liver transplant earlier this year, came as a great shock to those of us who grew up and matured with Lou Reed. For several years, he was my constant companion – and I remember vividly – as if it were just yesterday – sitting on the edge of my bed in my London flat in 1974 and suddenly jerking up in amazement during the Berlin album when I heard the baby crying as ‘they were taking her children away’. And maybe that song and my reaction to it summarises the incredible power of this man’s song writing – he 24
brought passion, sadness, joy, heartache, despair, hope, longing, frustration and a dozen other emotions into the lives of those who loved his creations. Of all the songs written during that period those of Lou Reed will be remembered forever as touching the emotions of the listeners and awakening in them a deep reflective understanding of the harsher realities of life. Lou Reed’s career began with the great band the Velvet Underground – formed in the late 60s and later transformed by Andy Warhol, the band produced legendary songs, many written by Lou Reed, such as “All Tomorrow’s Parties” (incidentally Warhol’s particular favourite), the al-
most sleazy “Sunday Morning”, the unforgettable track “Heroin” and the powerful “I’m Waiting for the Man”. Lou Reed was not afraid to open our hearts and minds to the realities of life – warts and all – he wrote about the things he lived with as he grew up in Brooklyn before spending time at Syracuse University from where he graduated with honours in 1964. But for Lou Reed the great explosion of sound and lyrics that ate away at your soul were to come with his solo albums in the early 70s. He released his first album, entitled
simply ‘Lou Reed’ in 1971 featuring Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe from the super-group ‘Yes’. Of all his albums this is the least challenging but a year later came the ground-breaking “Transformer” containing tracks such as “Walk on the Wild Side”, “Satellite of Love” and “Perfect Day”. Little did people think at the time that those songs and that album, co-produced incidentally by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, would become imprinted indelibly on their minds and souls – but that is exactly what did happen – as Bowie once said: ‘when I first heard Lou Reed’s music… I had never heard anything quite like it; it was a revelation to me.’
Year on year, album followed album, 26 in all and each one a new inspiration. Who could ever forget the incessant pleading from the 1975 ‘Coney Island Baby’ album in the title song when Lou Reed sings ”I just wanna play football for the coach”? That same year music magazine Rolling Stone stated: ‘he is still one of a handful of American artists capable of a spiritual run home.’ That sums up much of his work and so his demise on October 27th was not such a ‘perfect day’. I sat listening to “Sad Song” from the 1973 Berlin album with 25
its powerful references to Mary Queen of Scots and broken arms – fusing lyrics with almost legendary instrumentation. Or I sit in reverential silence as I learn about Caroline ‘picking herself up from the floor’ in ‘Caroline Says’, a kind of fusion from the Velvet Underground days in tracks entitled ‘Lisa Says’, ‘Stephanie Says’ and ‘Candy Says’. I am touched deeply by the directness, honesty and sincerity of the lyrics – but at the same time the music engenders feelings of passion and love of a rare intensity which for me are milestones along the spiritual path described by Rolling Stone magazine. I was lucky enough to attend a number of his concerts in the 70s including an open air whole day event at Charlton Athletic football ground in 1974 when he stood out as unique, demanding, unremitting and authoritarian in his own right. Despite the fact that the concert also featured among others in the line-up Maggie Bell and The Who, I came home with Lou Reed intoxicating my spirits. During that period in the early 70s I was often taking a walk on the wild side, sometimes voluntary sometimes not, but throughout, Lou Reed, his music, his messages and his deep understanding of the complexities of life were with me as constant companions. I was not surprised to learn that even the Vatican had paid tribute to him after his death. Yet for me the great praise came earlier from Vaclav Pavel, the poet president of the Czech Republic who insisted that Lou Reed played live for him at a White House state dinner organized by President Clinton in 1998. Many more tributes have poured in from so many pop legends and others – the world has lost a great friend – a man who could communicate with the likes of me and you in simple, direct and honest ways. He changed my life. 26

A couple of months ago, we featured how Riverhouse Massage in Chiang Mai has been transformed by Englishman Hugh and his Thai husband, Ton. Now they continue to work their magic in the space behind the massage on the banks of the River Ping by creating Chiang 28
Mai’s newest and most exciting eatery, The Edge. They have imported the towering talents of Tracy Taylor-Beck as the restaurant’s general manager. Tracy, 35, was a senior manager for the major UK charity
Age UK and ran cafés for fundraising. Now she lives in Thailand with her wife, Michelle. “I’m very good at eating food!” she says with genuine enthusiasm. Britain certainly had a bad reputation for food but this has now completely changed. “People like Heston Blumenthal and Tom Kerridge have shown that the Brits have learned what they are good at and now take food very seriously,” says Tracy. “The Edge will serve modern British/ western menu with some Asian quirks, making the most of seasonal produce that can be found locally.” There will be some classic British favourites like the Sunday Roast, steak and ale pie and (homemade) sausages and mash but also modern dishes like quail scotch egg with Thai sausage meat and coconut chili sambal. Steak and triple fried chips will be complimented by chili and lime leaf butter and mini Thai pork burgers with pineapple relish will excite eager pal-
ettes. Sweet toothed diners will celebrate with a range of homemade ice creams, traditional sticky toffee pudding and molten chocolate fondant. Tracy has set herself a demanding schedule. The Edge will open for full English breakfast at 11 am with champagne brunch on Sundays that include eggs benedict and smoked salmon with eggs scrambled to order. High teas are a fashionable feature that is in prospect too. Lunches and dinner will be from the ever changing menu that is sufficiently flexible to cater for customer requests- all served in this romantic space with its peaceful river views. “This flexibility will stop our staff from ever being jaded and provide superb variety for our diners,” says Tracy, adding, “It’s good food served simply and despite the beauty of the setting, the food has to be the star.” Cocktails will include The Edge signature Lemongrass Mojito and the wine menu is an 29
intelligent selection that embraces South American favourites. There is a small stage that will host occasional live music events and a big screen that will be utilised for special movie nights. “Brief Encounter will definitely show - it’s my favourite film,” says Tracy with a broad grin. Chef is a Thai national who lived in the UK for a number of years in a Thai restaurant but has a deep understanding of The Edge menu, designed by Tracy and a consultant chef. The waiting staff is all spic and span in their Edge livery and all speak excellent English. Tracy expects plenty of customer feedback, “There has to be an interactive relationship with our clients to maintain excellence and growth.” This service ideal is clearly something which Tracy takes very
30
seriously and promises to distinguish The Edge as a top range restaurant with a mid-range price ethic that will be distinctly reasonable. Last month saw The Edge making the most of the river’s edge location with a Loy Krathong party that featured free canapés and cocktails as merry makers launched their Krathongs into the Ping and Kom Far (Chinese Lanterns) into the Chiang Mai sky. The feedback was universally positive. Anthony from London said, “It is great to see someone doing something new and the menu looks fabulous!” This month will see The Edge cutting new ground with a festive feast to celebrate Christmas. The full English spectacular of roasted turkey with all the trimmings promises to be a plumptious treat.

“We thought there was a void in the Pattaya – Jomtien restaurant scene for a place to go when you wanted quality tasty food at affordable prices that wasn’t a smoky pub or noisy sports bar,” says Richard Burk (formerly of Amor restaurant in Boyztown for 16 years) and Phil Graham who founded SPICE! Magazine (and also operated three restaurants in the US), the guys behind this international and Thai menu that features Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (8 am to 10 pm) serving premium quality meats and produce, with everything homemade on the premises- buttermilk pancakes and full English breakfasts and scrumptious desserts. “We also serve homemade soups, sandwiches, burgers and for more substantial meals we have a nice selection of steaks, seafood, some English favorites like cottage pie, liver bacon and onions, American dishes like chicken pot pie, chicken parmesan with spaghetti and a good selection of pastas including, spaghetti and meatballs, smoked salmon, and our rich
and cheesy beef lasagne.” Chef Khun Surachai has 20 years’ experience preparing Western and Thai dishes and makes sure that his authentic Thai food is prepared with the same quality ingredients as the Western food. Ban Den Friends By Kenneth Dobson
knew Siriphan was mostly her mothers’ spokesperson. He guessed her mother had put his two sisters up to this.
Eke Siriphan glared menacingly at her brotherin-law who was hiding whatever feelings he had behind a mask of serene passivity. She let several moments fly before launching her major missile. “We followed you and you took him to a motel!” She screamed the offending word as if it were poisonous. Eke allowed his dark eyes to float toward his attacker’s, but was not about to grace the trial by either defence or rebuttal. He 38
The result of their investigation would depend on what Sirinute, his wife, made of it. All things otherwise being normal, Sirinute’s concerns would boil down to two: whether Eke’s adultery had any impact on her and their two young children, and whether the Gospel Light Church, their employer, would take action against their pastor and his wife. It was inevitable, now, that church members would hear the gossip. Siriphan had misplayed her tiles in this mah-jong match. If she wanted to use the evidence to control Eke, which the two sisters thought they were doing, then they should have treated the information itself, and not their exposure of the information, as their weapon. Once the rumour was hinted at, they had no more ammunition of that calibre. It was entirely relevant that Eke had just been re-elected to a second four-year term as the pastor of Gospel Light congregation. He was the first full-time pastor in the little church’s century-long history and had attracted new members, outside funding for the church’s early childhood centre, and other programs. He had also vastly improved the relationship between the church and the nearby Buddhist temple. The Church people were nearly unanimous in their support of Pastor Eke and his softspoken wife, director of the early childhood centre. Eke knew that if Sirinute and he were alone they would have an easier job working their troubles through, and that
the church would ignore the gossip if the couple could show some unity. The shifty ones in all this was Siriphan and Sirinute’s mother.
not stand for his shenanigans. Pastors who knew still less about the situation, were inclined to wonder how it could be tolerated a minute longer.
On the other hand, Eke’s trip to the motel was not an isolated adventure. He was a bi-sexual man with a strong preference for younger men. Eke had also chosen Protestant Christianity rather than Roman Catholicism precisely because he did not want to take vows of celibacy. As for monogamy, he felt that Thai morality was a laudable middle path whereby a person had a spouse to fulfil a social role and often had a lover for romance. In other words, Eke was neither remorseful nor submissive. Nor was this the first time Sirinute had confronted him with her suspicions. True, he never confessed, but he never denied the accusations, either. As far as Eke was concerned there were two compartments in his life, one was inhabited by his family and the other was, so far, a string of sexual encounters that had failed to result in a partnership.
As Eke had surmised, Siriphan had no new weapons once it was clear he was not intimidated by the threat of having his liaisons made known, for they were bound to become known. And how could they threaten him, in any case? At her mother’s instigation Siriphan made one more attempt to destroy Eke. The mother and daughter took their story to Sister Alicia, a spinster member of the Church Council. Alicia was receptive—even eager. Alas for the three of them, Alicia had already spent her credit on other issues. The congregation no longer cared about the sister’s latest grievance. Alicia actually left the church before the next vote on the pastor came around.
If the key leaders in the Light Church chose to take offence at their young pastor’s reported yet officially unsubstantiated escapades, then they would vote against him next time his term was up for renewal. Meanwhile, Eke kept his ambiguous relationships in view. Each of the fellows came to church and many took on some duties; one or two actually joining the church. Other pastors who knew of Eke’s issues were surprised at how things developed. Those who had known him as a devastatingly attractive seminary student, who liked to dress in drag at parties, were surprised that he married in the first place. Pastors, who were clued in about Pastor Eke later, were sure that eventually the church would
Pastor Eke was unanimously re-elected to a third term in 1994. By 2012 he had been pastor of Gospel Light Church for twentyseven years, longer than any other pastor in Chiang Mai Province, and he had just passed his silver wedding anniversary as well. “How do you do it?” Mack asked Eke one day. “Do what?” “How do you keep all the parts of your life together?” Eke replied without hesitation, “Be true to yourself. Otherwise all is lost.” Next month: Mike You can download the unabridged novel at www.out-in-thailand.com/shop 39

James Spader may have lost much of his hair and his younger, coltish good looks but how does he fare in The Blacklist (AXN True Vision ch. 142)? James Spader stars as Raymond “Red” Reddington in this action thriller. Ex-government agent Reddington is one of the FBI’s Most Wanted fugitives, who has brokered shadowy deals for criminals across the globe. Known as “The Concierge of Crime,” Reddington has mysteriously surrendered to the FBI, offering to help catch high-profile terrorists - but on the condition that he only speaks with rookie profiler Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone).
40
Shadowing the Homeland conceit of the ‘is he a goodie or a baddie’ conundrum and the current fashion for morally questionable (anti?) heroes, the show rattles along at a decent enough pace and does produce some genuinely exciting moments. Dishy Diego Klattenhoff stars as FBI agent Donald Ressler, providing the only real eye candy that former FBI chief, J Edgar Hoover would have loved. The guess is that the enigmatic relationship twixt Spader and Boone will reveal that they are father and daughter. It is questionable as to whether the show can sustain the central suspense but the hope is that it can: Reddington has a flamboyant sartorial elegance that never undermines his sinister undertones and amplifies his criminal mastermind status. His poise and cutting wit make the unbelievable character credible and Spader undoubtedly steals every scene and every show to such a degree that it seems that The Blacklist would be nothing without him.
R THE O F T OU MONEY
Medical Insurance Quandary Andrew, My health insurance is up for renewal, except the insurance company has decided to end it because of my age. I checked the fine print and it is clear about this but unfortunately I did not pay much attention to it when I signed up years ago. Do I have any other options? Will this cost a lot of money? Please can you help me with this? Charles.
You often end up paying for a great deal of the costs yourself; then you realise that it is not really cheap cover. Others hide behind their small print like having a maximum age limit.
Dear Charles, This is actually a little unusual. Most international companies will renew your medical or health insurance for as long as you need it. However, the insurance industry in this area is splattered with companies offering cheap policies and then you find out why later. Cheap does not always mean best. Many Thai providers offer what you think is great cover until you come to claim and see that each aspect of treatment has a cover limit; also called sub-limits. 42
I can try to assist you in this area as PFS work with a number of reputable international providers offering very good cover with a whole range of facilities at various costs. They also have high age entry levels and most of them will insure you for life once you have enrolled. We always search for the best value for money. I suggest we have a chat as soon as you like. Questions to the author can be directed to PFS International on 02 653 1971 or email to enquiriesthailand@fsplatinum.com Andrew Wood has been an expat in Asia for 34 years and is Executive Director with PFS International. He has made a significant contribution to the PFS library of articles covering the complete A-Z of financial planning, dating back over eight years.

My problem is at work, where I am a department manager for a large company in Thailand. I hate to admit it because I know you are going to be a judgmental bitch, but I have been “seeing” a subordinate for several months. We are discrete and feel that it is nobody else’s business. However, I formerly saw another subordinate. He has somehow found out about us and is threatening to bring it to the attention of my own bosses unless I perform several acts of kindness involving money, bling, and elevation of his professional stature in the company. I am afraid that this kind of blackmail will only lead to more. Can you suggest ways I might slither out of this uncomfortable predicament?
44
Dearest one, There’s always suicide. You are not the first to call me a judgmental bitch. I assume that by “seeing” you intend to mean something more than “gazing upon.” I do not know how you made it so far upward in your big company, but one of the most fundamental rules of management (I’m a Stanford MBA) is “Thou shalt not have carnal relations with thy staff.” While suicide isn’t such a bad idea in your case, I suggest that you find a playmate who does not work for you and ask for a transfer to a different department or location. It sounds like you are overdue for big changes anyway, not excluding possible unemployment. Now that wasn’t so judgmental, was it? By the way, your email address clearly reveals who you work for and I really need a new Rolex.
Darika, I have a problem with a woman at my (government) office. My coworkers do not know I am gay. I am manly and I am not friendly with them outside of work. I am 26 and she is about the same age as my mother. Her desk is next to me. Every day she talks about her daughter. She says we must meet because her daughter is single and I am a nice boy and maybe a good husband for her. I really do not want this and it is making me want to do bad things. How can I make her stop? But I do not want to be impolite.
Gentle reader, Please do not take an AR47 to work. Many possible solutions come to mind. I could send you a framed photo of Darika that I will gladly kiss with my reddest lip gloss for you to display on our desk. Your colleague will either draw the conclusion that you prefer more mature women, or that you read a gay magazine. I have suggested to others in the past that simply leaving a copy of this publication on your desk will send a strong message. (If there are other younger guys working with you who ask to borrow your copy it may be your lucky day.) You could say that you made a vow of chastity to your dying mother, or announce your engagement to a fictitious friend. Or you could simply tell her that you are not interested and that her daughter is old enough to find someone on her own without her mother shamefully meddling in her love life.
I hope you find my translation from Lebanese into English satisfactory. Honestly, I don’t have a clue how to find a farmer, although farmers have sometimes found me. Maybe my good readers know a farmer or someone with Bangkok land and a green thumb who likes to make money. If so, write me: darika@out-inthailand.com Love,
Darika, you sound like you have answers to just about everything. This isn’t about my naughty boyfriend. I own a specialty restaurant in Bangkok. I have to import produce that is not grown locally from (my home country) at great expense. There is no reason these things could not be grown here, but they are unknown to Thai farmers. How can I find a farmer near Bangkok to do this for me? Soil quality is less important than good water. Work involved is only 30-45 minutes a day. My family grew these things when I was a kid so I can show someone how it’s done and the pay well. I will provide seeds and materials. Help me and dinner is on me. 45

Doc John hits the funny bone… By Doc John
Lay people think that those who practice the estimable arts of medicine and nursing are daily faced with life and death situations. Sometimes that is so but like other jobs there are moments of monotony. At these times anecdotes are swapped and grim and dark humour stalk the corridors of many a hospital. Working on a men’s surgical ward as a junior I was attached to the round of an American locum. Pausing at one bed he examined the elderly patient and asked “Have you any gas?” With a quizzical expression the patient looked around before replying “No doctor we are all electric in our house.” I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive myocardial infarct. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died of a ‘massive internal fart.’
46
While acquainting myself with a new elderly patient, I asked, “How long have you been bedridden?” After a look of complete confusion she answered, “Why, not for about twenty years – when my husband was alive.” A woman and a baby were in the doctor’s examining room, waiting for the doctor to come in for the baby’s first exam. The doctor arrived, and examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breastfed or bottle-fed. ‘Breast-fed,’ she replied... “strip down to your waist.” The doctor ordered. She did. He pinched her nipples, pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a very professional and detailed examination. Motioning to her to get dressed, the doctor said, “The baby is underweight. You don’t have any milk.” ‘’I know,” she said, “I’m his Grandma, but I’m glad I came.”

f If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/ Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom/Surawong are most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A* is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. Up2 Salon* will make you beautiful as will the RMS Clinic with a complete program of excellent treatments. Tarntawan Place Hotel* is at the centre of the action. Eat at Dick’s Cafe*, Telephone Pub* is always busy and night owls party at DJ Station*. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly 48
Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, Singapore Pub, See Men, Seek, Blue, and DoorDum. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. Flight of The Gibbon* is a thrill a minute attraction. Get away to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach. OUT in Phuket
P
huket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna* and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage Inn complete with bar and restaurant will delight. * Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms and the Dolphin Hotel is a landmark.. The disco at Boat Bar* is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike.
80
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. The recently refurbished Club One Seven* guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. Stay at brand new and sparkling CC’s Hideaway, Phuket Gay Homestay with regualar pool parties and B-B-Q’s close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. Phuket Travel Company* are renowned. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com & gaypatong.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner
