He’s the man! “Jimmy” is probably the most handsome ‘woman’ to date in the Thai LGBT community. In his 30, he said he completely finished his sexchange transition (after four-times in an operation room) from female to male. Probably the very first FTM in history to wow a Thai audience, the transman recently emerged as a new hot guy in social media. Formerly called by his family and friends as “Jin”, Jimmy Kritipat Chotidhanitsakul), an only child in the family, announced he’d like to be a role model for other FTM to gain courage to stand for themselves. Since MTFs are not widely known, Jimmy said it’s important for Thai society to know that there are many FTMs. When a popular morning talk show interviewed him, he gained even more popularity. After his appearance, people started to question his reasons behind his public exposure. Some of them thought he was lying about his sex-change, tracking back his previous interviews and pointed out mismatched dates about his hormone intake, breast removal and reassigned sexual organ. “I

think he just wanted to make himself a celebrity,” a woman wrote on a webboard. What’s wrong in being a celebrity if he can make things change?

Grindr is a big tool among gay men to get connected. But it may soon be old hat, as a Korean based application “Line” has drawn a lot of Thai users. Thailand is now the second largest country after Japan, using the application. In less than two years, the app has reached more than 100 million users, thanks to its cute cartoon stickers displaying a myriad of up-and-down emotions to make more fun in message response. There are 13 million users in the Thai market. I have no ideas how many gays are in that figure. But of course, Thai gays never miss the trend. Private Line groups are mushrooming all over the space. Anyone can create an ID. It can be a telephone number, an email address, or any name. If you are asked by your Thai counterpart: What’s your Line?. He is asking for your ID, not a line of conversation.

Looking for a Thai fantasy flick to boost your hot summer day? The movie Lor Lak Sai (in English: Tiger & Wolf) is a good choice. A plenty of muscled, young teens and it features a nude painting scene plus a bad dream that looks like he is jerking off. The director, Sarawut Intaraprom, is openly gay. No doubt that he will not disappoint his gay audience. After opening up his 80-million Baht house in Chiang Mai to media for exclusive interviews, Phartchai Rueansit, M.D., also opened up the heart of an editor at Hello Magazine, who interviewed him about his success as a millionaire in less than 6 years from a network marketing business. “She doubted about how I could do it in such a short period of time from being poor to being so rich. She doubted if it’s real that the business can generate the

return,”said the former psychiatrist who is openly gay and Chiang Mai’s latest nouveau riche. “Then, I asked her, how long haven’t you seen your parents? How long haven’t you spent value time with your parents? Will you work until you are 60?” The editor and her team started to have tears in their eyes. Phartchai is one of many gay men, who superbly take care of his old mother. He gave his brothers and sisters a big salary, supported their children’s education, and brought all them to live together under one roof with the mother. “If my Happy Life Project could prove that it can help you stay with your parents everyday with financial freedom. If it can prove that you work only five years in this project, would you join it?” The editor and her crew singed up the application. Phartchai is not the only openly, and highly successful gay in this gay-friendly company. He will be featured on the cover of Hello Magazine and a six-page interview this month.

Stylish actor Zachary Quinto returns to the big screen as Spock in the new Star Trek movie, Into Darkness, this month and in this exclusive interview with James Barnes, he reveals his thought process behind coming out.

There’s something steadfastly classic about Zachary Quinto. He brought an impervious, Olivier-esque menace to Heroes uber villain Sylar, maintained his own while facing off against Jeremy Irons and Kevin Spacey in financial meltdown saga Margin Call and was the perfect casting choice as Spock in JJ Abrams’ reboot of the Star Trek franchise, like a second coming of Leonard Nimoy. But it’s the sophisticated, understated 10

method he employed to come out as a gay man that was particularly admirable. No pomp, no big announcement. In the middle of a chat with New York magazine at the end of 2011, he casually prefaced his response to a question about the revival of Angels in America with the words, “As a gay man…” In fact, he said it twice, just to make sure the point got through. It did, of course, though what is pleasing is how the whole thing was treated with grace.

In Zachary’s case, there was no massive headline, ‘Yes, I’m Gay’. The actual header actually read, ‘What’s Up Spock?’ In a follow-up interview the actor called it, “...coming out from behind the wall. Walls now are only as high or as thick or as strong as we allow them to be.” In reality, the 35-year-old actor, writer, producer, agonised over his approach on the subject. He was previously cagey in several interviews before, most notably when he told a New York Times

reporter that he was not interested in discussing his sleeping arrangements. Quinto admits to staying up until 5 am the night before trying to figure it out. He gave no warning to his publicist or friends or family - his performance was not screen-tested in advance. He just knew it was the right time to confirm what many people already believed, but on his terms, in his words. 11

“I needed it to happen,” he says. “It shouldn’t be the big issue it is, but there was the danger my acting was going to be sculpted with hearsay, rather than being taken seriously for what it is. I wanted to be open and honest, and I wanted the authenticity of who I am to come out. I knew in myself who I was, but I think you have to be honest with all those people around you, and those who invest in your art. That was really important to me, and it was growing more and more important with each passing year.” 12

With the next instalment in the Stat Trek franchise about to hit theatres around the world, does Quinto ever entertain the notion that coming out affected his career? “No-one can ever know the answer to that,” he flatly replies. “I’m not one of those people who considers ‘what if?’ I don’t think it’s healthy or productive. All I know is ‘this is it’, and if it’s influenced my career positively or negatively, we’ll never know. Certainly, I don’t believe it’s been anything but a huge plus for me so far. And let’s be fair, gay men in the performance industry are nothing new.”

Early prowess on stage growing up in Pittsburgh provided the initial first steps for young Zachary. Aware of his theatrical flair, his mother enrolled him in the Civic Light Opera society to enhance his talent. He landed roles in Oliver and the Wizard of Oz and found himself hooked. Bouncing between LA and New York, a ‘twenty something’ Quinto flitted from one series to another - CSI, Charmed, Six Feet Under. He landed a 20-episode run on the third season of 24 and the coveted the role of Tori Spelling’s gay best friend in So noTORIous. Oddly, that did not catapult him to fame. “As an actor you go through dry periods, and then everything comes right. There are only really a select few who can sit comfortably at the top knowing they will always be in demand. For the rest of us, especially at the start, it really is a nervy profession, and there have been tough times when I’ve had to talk myself back to common sense;

I’ve had to convince myself to stick with it.” Days after his 30th birthday, Zachary scored a career-defining role as Spock in Star Trek. “It was the most awesome feeling to land that role, but the elation lasted about 30 seconds before the pressure of what was to come really dawned on me,” he laughs. “That’s another characteristic of acting – joy and fear colliding with one another. Playing Spock was probably the hugest responsibility I could have imagined at the time, after Bond.” Luckily, Quinto nailed the role in Star Trek, hedging the line between impersonation and caricature. Leonard Nimoy himself had a small cameo in the 2009 movie, and wasted no time in taking Quinto under his wing. “He was a great help to me. He didn’t have to be, but he was. We really bonded and spent a lot of time with each other. That was as special as the role itself, I think.”

The actor is currently in a relationship with Glee star Jonathan Groff but won’t get pulled into revealing any details. “There are only brief things to say about it – I’m lucky, happy and enjoying every minute. What more needs to be said?!” Clearly an ambitious individual, Quinto admits he’s working on a number of projects, both in front and behind the camera, but won’t elaborate just yet. “I’ve got ambitions beyond acting, and I’ve always loved the beauty of film-making. I think you really have to be interested in the bigger picture if you want to get into producing or directing. I’ve got one eye on that, but am quite happy with how things stand at the moment.” STAR TREK: Into Darkness opens on May 10th

A highly anticipated sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, opens this month. Quinto says the new movie is more physically challenging than the last, but is reluctant – or perhaps contractually banned – from revealing anything about the secretive plot, which features Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch as an intergalactic space terrorist out to destroy Starfleet. He has admitted “it’s bigger, louder, smarter, pacier, wittier... it’s awesome. I’m looking forward for you good folks to check it out; it’s something very special.” 14

One of OUT iT’s closest friends and contributors is American artist, Galen Garwood. You will remember his ground-breaking article on the possible gay life and murder of Vincent Van Gogh. Now Galen is creating an exciting new project called ‘Maenam: Of Water, Of Light’, and you can be part of it.

Galen has a laid-back air about him but his laser beam eyes are intense scanners that ravenously feed on poetic and natural stimuli. “During my first trip to Northern Thailand, my young guide and I were crossing the shallow headwaters of the Ping River. He kept using the expression maenam. The word for water is nam, so I assumed he was referencing the river’s currents. I asked him if he would translate the word mae. He said it meant “mother.” I stopped in midstream. “Mother of Water,” I proffered, as much to the river and her blue sky as to my guide. An incredulous expression fell across the young man’s brow. He too then stopped, turned, and said, “No, not so, khun Galen.” This was the beginning of Galen’s newest creation, ‘Maenam: Of Water, 26

Of Light’: “I smiled in polite acquiescence but clearly maenam expresses exactly that; the concept of rivers as matriarchal deities is universal. Perhaps what seemed obvious to me, falling upon it through translation, was for him, obscured in familiarity.” Galen has now built a house on the edge of the Maerim River, in northern Thailand. In front, near the river’s edge, thrives a coppice of Royal Poinciana, their long, graceful limbs bending out and down into the water as if drinking from the stream with a threemeter-high dam that controls the river for crop irrigation. On the dam’s narrow top, rickety bamboo plinths are lashed together, allowing local farmers to cross to their rice paddies that float over the alluvial plains toward the eastern mountains. By the end of August, the river has risen dangerously high and the bamboo

platforms are lost to the flooding waters. It was here that he first began to meditate on (then later document on film) the small river’s various states of movement. The study area involved only a few square meters. “Kneeling within inches of the water, peering beneath the river’s undulating mirror, I felt a pulse passing through the smooth stones of the bottom, flowing up from deeper currents of the earth’s core,” says Galen, adding, “So irresistibly buoyant, imagination’s palpable gift— something I cannot name rises within the currents and dances among the waves. Ascending still, it is offered to the sky, to the rising winds; it is consecrated by stars, married to the rain, then born again, back into the rivers of the earth.”

“Light dances across and within the water, of which currents, colours, and sounds are shaped. The sun’s penetrating light and the position of the earth relative to the source of light; from gold, greens, and browns of dying leaves and grasses, umbers of ancient clays, iridescent eddies of sand, parachuting flowers and fertile seeds; from the swirling dance of microbes, glimmering eggs of spawning fish, and the delicate wings of dragonflies. In the breathing river and sky there lives a language of sublime intuitive potential.” Years ago, Galen spent time away from his Seattle home on an isolated, ten-acre parcel of alpine land in Eastern Washington: “A swift creek etched its way down through the middle of the acreage. Across the creek, I fashioned a 27

simple deck and built a fire pit and cook stove. Here, on this mountain refuge, I would spend several weeks in solitude. I spent most days removing the debris of careless timbering, especially in and around the creek. The water source was from a nearby spring, brought to the inner chamber of a discarded hot water heater. Just beyond the deck, the land swept precipitously down to the Kittitas Valley. At the end of the day, I would wait for my arrival into the stars. One cold evening, sitting by the campfire, I entered a state of meditation, wholly lost from my ‘self.’ Very soon, within the myriad sounds of water falling over rocks, I began to hear voices, layered, cadenced, and primitive. Even though undecipherable, it was clearly a song. Later that night, the singing returned as I lay beneath the warm covers of my bed. This time, I let go and 28

it followed me, or I simply followed it, into my dreams. I’m not suggesting that “river spirits” were pumping out a medieval motet, especially for me, on this particular night- though it seemed a compelling idea! Instead, I believe that because of my altered state of consciousness, in the sense of being ‘outside of myself,’ I was able to hear what I otherwise could not. That which can be heard, is heard less by humans, as we become emotionally and psychically estranged from our phenomenal world. Over the vastness of evolutionary time, we are experiencing less and less of what the earth has to tell or show us.” “In remote areas, far from the cacophony of human-made sounds, we can experience a fraction of what humans must have sensed even a century ago,

let alone in the millennia that separate us from our ancestral selves. Did humankind’s creative prowess evolve from those sensory experiences—our most distant relatives, gathered round small fires on the banks of nourishing rivers, mesmerized by the rhythmic, percussive sounds of water falling over boulder and rock, which humans later replicated by striking small stones held in the palms of their hands? Was it here the first symbol was made with finger and ash? Was this when poetry took flight?” Galen began the Maenam project in May 2012, at the onset of the rainy season, and finished in October, when the monsoon typically passes. After selecting the photographs for the project series, he set them side by side, pondering the various transforming expressions

of the river, lines from a poem began to surface: This wind lets go of everything it touches. / I long to hold the wind / I’d kiss a fish / and love a stone / and marry the winter rain / if I could persuade this battered earth / to let me make it home. “The poem, rising in my mind like shimmering water, was first told to me in the early 1980s. “A Lover’s Quarrel,” by Sam Hamill, remains indelibly imprinted within me, a hymn of communication to and from the earth.” ‘The poet is a farmer,’ writes Denise Levertov in New and Selected Essays, ‘one who tends the lands of language and imagination and its creatures, who makes things grow, poem-things, storythings, not out of nowhere but out of the ground on which he walks.’ The idea of entwining these poems and the Maenam 29

images into a book seems natural to Galen. “The poets included in this union are friends of mine, most of whom I’ve worked with for nearly three decades on various books and other collaborative projects. The poems I chose to include reflect and re-nourish our transcendent and teleological memory of water and light. They are gifts by which we measure ourselves within the sustaining ebb and flow of the river. Moreover, the plaintive song of the poet, as in William O’Daly’s “Hug Point,” reminds us that we, like the sea, create ourselves “in the secret beating of the heart / against silence.” ‘Maenam: Of Water, Of Light’ will be a compelling collection of images and poems in a high quality art book funded by web platform, Kickstarter. The Glorious 1960s part 2 A little beyond... By Jai Pee

Musicologist Jai Pee continues his story of the evolution of pop music and culture focusing on the years between 1967 and the early 1970’s. The end of 1967 was a real watershed - great developments were taking place that led to a new era of music accompanied by many important changes in society and people’s attitudes. To say that the musical world was a catalyst would be an understatement. Pop stars and those in the music business were really sticking their necks out and although some changes came slowly, others were more precipitant – 1967 was the year of David Steel’s Abortion Act in Britain, a great leap forward in humanitarian terms, although a few might not agree! And the decriminalization of homosexuality in the UK accompanied by many of the US states following a similar path. It was the era of flower power, which was born of a growing protest movement against the escalating Vietnam War. The 32

movement was given its title by poet Allen Ginsberg a year or two earlier and was a massive movement in which songs abounded and strong emotions emerged. UK’s Glasgow-born Donovan not only sang about “The Universal Soldier” as a protest but decorated his ever growing list of albums with flowery titles such as “Sunshine Superman”, “A Gift from a Flower to a Garden” and “Mellow Yellow”. Bright colours were in and the psychedelic era had begun. Long hair, flared trousers, ankle-length flowerypatterned skirts and words like ‘peace’ and ‘love’ were the order of the day. The word ‘Hippy’ came into vogue and people really did follow Scott McKenzie to San Francisco – to the junction of Haight and Ashbury Streets, not a stone’s throw from the homes of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, a meeting place for the hippy movement. The movement’s real centre was Berkley University across the Bay with many off-shoots in New York, London and other European and Australian cities. The music, art and

fashion era was one of psychedelic images, backed up with illegal drugs such as pot and LSD. The Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, at first quite perplexing lyrically, was another daring reference to the growing drugs culture; Phil Ochs’s “Draft Dodger Rag” was a parody of armed forces enrolment and attitudes towards both gays and drugs; and Steppenwolf told Americans “Don’t Step on the Grass, Sam” Australian band, the New Seekers emerged, with songs such as “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (in perfect harmony)”, in the USA, The Lovin’ Spoonful asked “Do You Believe in Magic?” and the Beatles took us on two journeys – in a “Yellow Submarine” and to meet “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. On Broadway shows such as “Cabaret” and The Sound of Music” were eclipsed by Hair, one of the most popular, revolutionary and stunningly different shows ever to emerge, with songs such as “Aquarius” and the even bolder

“Sodomy”. Hair, billed as ‘America’s First Tribal Rock Musical’, was an instant success. It was soon followed by Oh Calcutta, the name derived from a painting by French artist Clovis Trouille ‘O quel cul t’as’ – ‘oh what an arse you’ve got’ – and although the censors were outraged by its nudity and sexually explicit scenes, its longer term effects on attitudes and liberal views were enormous. Freedom became a popular word, helped along the way by Janis Joplin singing the evocative words from the song “Me and Bobby McGee”: ‘Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose’. Alongside this huge tide of liberalism, melody and pop euphoria came the rock bands, often referred to as heavy metal. Deep Purple, Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin and the Jeff Beck Group soon became living legends, joining the enormous successes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones; several members of whom had survived arrests and heavy fines for drug use. Other groups, 33

somewhat less heavy also emerged with an admixture of styles – the Moody Blues for example, ventured into an almost mystical world with their albums “A Question of Balance” and “Days of Future Passed”. The Strawbs fused rock with folk in an amazing album “From the Witchwood”; and Van Morrison sent us on an impassioned spiritual journey with what has to be one of the great classic albums of all time, “Astral Weeks”. Revolutionary days but also sad. In 1970 came the announcement that the Beatles were to split – they had reached the end of the road and left a legacy that has never been paralleled. For so many fans, 34

this was ‘the day the music died’, not the Don McLean reference to the 1959 plane crash. That same year Janis Joplin died of an overdose of heroin following the mysterious drug-related drowning a year earlier of Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. In 1971, a further casualty was added to the growing list with the suicide of Jim Morrison of the Doors. The era that had started with peace and love was ending with death and misery for some. Thus the Beatle-less gap of the 70s was born but the hole they left behind was soon to be filled by an enormous outburst of talent of a different kind.

Noom had another lesson on growing into a man and about where babies come from and again Tan was his teacher. They had taken the water buffalos to the wallowing hole and were alone in the orchard nearby. “You aren’t like other guys,” Tan commented. Noom was instantly alert, but Tan went on without passing any judgment on this developing difference that Noom thought of as a widening gap between himself and others. In particular he thought of himself as being more of a girl than a boy, yet he was a boy. He never doubted he was a boy. It’s just that he felt differently about girls than he 36

thought most of the boys did. He enjoyed the girls more than other guys did. He liked being with them and he liked doing what they did more than the competitive, active things the boys did. Tan went on, “You are special.” “What is special?” Noom was concerned about the way he was being evaluated. “You know things that most boys don’t know.” “Like what?” “Like what people are going through. Like what the world is like.” Noom was stunned. He had never thought about these matters this way. Tan went on, “You are older on the inside than you are on the outside.” Then he thought about it some more, “Or are you a woman inside your boy’s body?” In other circumstances, this question would have raised Noom’s level of anxiety but between the two of them, the question wasn’t automatically fraught with peril. It had actually been on Noom’s mind over the past year. He had put off talking about it but now he was ready to say something to his older friend Tan. “I don’t want to be a man like my dad and other men,” Noom confessed. Tan was feeling more and more like a man and couldn’t imagine not being happy about it. “What’s wrong with being a man?” “Nothing’s wrong with other boys be-

coming men but I don’t want to,” Noom admitted suddenly. Suddenly, it was, because he hadn’t said this or thought clearly about it before. “Do you want to be a woman, then?” Tan asked, hardly able to imagine anyone wanting to be a woman if they could be a man. “Not that either,” Noom said. “I want to be me.” Tan waited. He hadn’t any idea how to handle that thought. “I don’t know who I am going to be, but I’m not going to be a man like Dad or a woman like Mom. Not like you are going to be, not like your girlfriend Kulap is going to be.” “In between?” Tan asked. “Not in between, either. Different,” Noom argued. “Katoey?” Tan asked and went on without waiting for an answer. “That’s what I mean. You’re special.” Noom thought he’d prefer to change the subject. “What shall we do this afternoon while the buffalos are enjoying the mud?” Tan looked at Noom and swallowed. “Uh, there’s something I want to try with you,” Tan finally managed to say. “Is it what you and Yo do?” Noom asked. Tan didn’t know that Noom knew about that, but he admitted, “It’s something like that.” “Then I don’t want to,” Noom dissented. “OK. Let’s just each do ourself,” Tan compromised. “Why don’t you just do it and I’ll watch,” Noom suggested. “Don’t you want to do it, too?” “No.” “Have you ever done it?”

“No.” “Well, it’s fun.” “Show me.” Tan had developed more muscles and hair in the past few months. Noom was fascinated to notice this, and imagined it would be happening to him, too, eventually. Noom sat with his knees up under his chin while Tan knelt and began by running his hands up and down his chest and stomach and then onto his thighs and the insides of his thighs and around his behind. Then he spat two or three times into his hand and wrapped it around his “little brother” as the slang of the times called it. Tan began to move his hand up and down. He continued until, without any warning that Noom could see, a white stream shot out of Tan’s penis followed by five or six smaller spurts. Tan’s face was sweaty as he slowed down and sat back onto his heels. He was breathing hard and smiling. “Whatda’ya call that?” Noom asked at last. “The boys call it ‘flying the kite’ and other things you shouldn’t say,” Tan informed him. Noom had heard bits of talk about flying the kite, but he had hung around the girls too much to have known exactly what it was. Now he knew. “Doesn’t smell good,” Noom wrinkled his nose. Tan tended to agree, but he kept quiet as he adjusted himself. “What is that stuff?” Noom wanted to know. “Oh, that’s what makes babies if you put it inside a woman,” he explained. Tan’s lessons did not go to waste. Noom learned and profited from them. Among the things he learned, as he was moving more steadily into femi37

nine pursuits like crocheting, was that he would never be inconvenienced by monthly menstrual discharges and he would never have a role in the production of a baby. These great facts of life further set him apart from both the boys and the girls. He needn’t strain to discover where he fit into nature’s scheme, however. He was reminded daily that he was a katoey, a member of a third sex. Then, sometime later, Noom began to hope for something. It came to him as a piece of a puzzle of concepts he was collecting. His hope was realized when he began his independence. Through the intervention of a family member, Noom become a care-giver to a bed-ridden old man. It was Noom’s job organise the man’s lunch and to help him get to the bathroom. He was the day nurse, before the family returned in the evening to take over until the next morning. Noom had this job for four years, with his abilities and duties expanding as the old man declined. As the patient slept more Noom had less to do. One person who came to break the monotony was the patient’s grandson. They became friends. Noom sensed that Raht was a kindred spirit, a year younger but more mature than his age. Bit by bit the two of them dared to broach the unmentionable topic. It was probably made easier because one morning the patient had failed to wake up in time to be taken to the bathroom. He had messed his bed. Raht and Noom had to clean up and give the patient a bath. It was the first time Noom had been with a naked man with someone else present. Somehow, it bridged a gap between the two boys. Over the coming days they grew more able to talk about their hopes and 38

experiences. “I’ll never get married,” Raht confessed. “I won’t either,” Noom said. “Why not?” Raht asked, because he did not know how to ask what he wanted to. “I’m not interested in having a wife.” “But you like girls,” Raht persisted. “You get along with them great.” “I like them as friends,” Noom explained. “But not to be a wife.” “You want to be the wife, then?” Raht asked, boldly. “Maybe,” Noom said, after a moment. “Who’d be the husband?” “Oh, that’d have to be a man who would love me,” Noom exclaimed. “Are there men like that?” Raht wondered. “I think there are,” Noom hoped. “I think I might be one,” Raht said, quietly. “What? You might be a man who could have a katoey wife?” Noom was amazed that Raht would admit such an idea. “I think so. If I found the right person.” It was just a few steps farther down this discursive path until Noom and Raht had agreed to see if they could figure out how the mechanics of male love might work. Noom knew what he had hoped some guy might do to him and so it was not a complicated process for him to show Raht how they might fit together. And they did fit together, nicely. GETTING IT WRONG -& RIGHT By Brian Baxter

With the Awards Season over (only to begin again with the May Cannes Film Festival jamboree) will any of the organisations that so liberally dispense trophies (not to mention goody bags worth over $50,000 at the Oscars) learn from their mistakes? I don’t mean the awards, which are right or wrong according to each person’s whim, but the deadly and repetitious nature of the ceremonies. Dull, dull, dull. Thrice times dull. Worst of the season was undoubtedly the Oscars, redeemed only by two embarrassing moments which it seems unkind to recall: so what better reason to do so? The first was when a French actor was ushered in to present some award. The audience was uncharacteristically muted and it didn’t take long to suss that they did not know who the hell the diminutive frog actually was. AH! Yes it’s the guy we gave a ‘best actor’ Oscar to last year in a film no one actually went to see. The other cherishable moment came when the ‘best actress’ rushed on stage only to trip over the silliest dress ever worn for such an occasion. No one will forget her next year! There’s some conso40

lation – alongside the undeserved golden statuette- in that there was enough material in the frock to make curtains for a dozen rooms. The real nightmare was the compere. A link man so out of his depth as to be pitiable, especially when compared with the BAFTA host, Stephen Fry, who a couple of weeks before had shown how humour and style can save the evening from becoming tedious. Let’s face it, even in edited telecasts the events are long winded and predictable. Why do the actors handing out awards need to be provided with a script demanding that they mouth platitudes about the significance of film, the role of the participants plus general waffle? Horrors compounded by the simpering gush that follows from all but a few of the winners. Honourable exceptions: Christoph Waltz and Daniel Day Lewis head the list. Class will out. Take note Mr.Affleck. Awards can be a poisoned chalice, especially Oscars. These are supposed to up the ante for recipients but all too often reward them with a deluge of scripts echoing the role which made them famous.

Sometimes the awards are a response to major works with no better example for decades than the string of ‘prizes’ (63 at last count) for Michael Haneke’s great film Amour. No one expected it to get the best film Oscar but best film in a foreign language was inevitable. It picked up similar awards at BAFTA, the Cesars, EUF and Golden Globes along with dozens of others. Haneke kept a low profile throughout. Amour (Love) has had no equal in the past two years. Not, in fact, since Haneke took the Palme d’Or in 2010 for his previous film The White Ribbon: bigger, more obviously ambitious and probably best of the many films he has directed. But Amour seems to have struck a chord with audiences, award givers and festivals throughout the world if only because of its honesty and unsentimental approach to the subject of its title. It deals with the last period in the lives of an elderly couple who are so sublimely at one that any intrusion in their lives seems unforgivable. When the intrusion is a massively debilitating illness visited upon the wife (Emmanuelle Riva) the husband (Jean Louis Trintignant) tries

valiantly to cope – but in vain, partly because of her unwillingness to be a victim. Friends, family, nurses are to no avail. She is feisty and determined: he less strong and driven to despair and action. Some viewers and critics have seen it as gentler by comparison with Haneke’s earlier, more daring and dangerous films but this is to misread the film’s steely strength, compounded by two remarkable central performances. Haneke announces the outcome of the story from the beginning. This is not a suspense movie but a meditation on life, made with such consummate skill that it surely makes him the most accomplished film maker working today. His greatest influences are Bresson and Hitchcock and he shares their complete mastery of the art of cinema. It is no great surprise that his response to a request for his ‘ten best films’ was as follows: Au Hasard Balthazar (Bresson). Lancelot du Lac (Bresson), The Mirror (Tarkovsky), Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (Pasolini), The Gold Rush (Chaplin). Psycho (Hitchcock), A Woman Under the Influence (Cassavetes), Germany Year Zero (Rossellini), L’Eclisse (Antonioni). 41

Gengle reader, You did not say much about yourself or why you think you think you are unsuccessful. Unless you are really ugly or you are boring, it is difficult to give you good advice. However, let me answer by telling you about my friend “Best.” Best is almost 30 but still looks 24. Because of his movie star looks, girls follow him and boys ask him for his telephone number. He had a very good education, has a good job and more money than he needs. Although he sounds like the 42

perfect man Best has complained since he was twenty that he cannot find a boyfriend. He sometimes meets handsome guys in pubs but he does not keep them long. I have to confess that I was one of his conquests. It did not take much time for him to lose interest in me. It has become clear to me that Best does not have a boyfriend because he really does not want a boyfriend. His brain and his heart are saying two different things. In Best’s case, he is simply too picky. Nobody is good enough for him (including me). He finds imperfection in everyone he meets. Although I do not know enough about you to solve your problem, I do want you to know that “Mr. Perfect” died in a plane crash in 1986. We all miss him. Fissures: Getting to the Bottom of the Problem By Doc John

An anal fissure is a tear in the delicate lining of the anus that causes great discomfort when the damaged tissue is stretched every time the bowels are opened. Bowel movements are uncomfortable and may contain bright red blood seen in the toilet bowl or on the toilet tissue. The blood comes from the torn anal lighting. The pain of the anal fissure often has a burning quality that lasts for many hours after opening the bowel, the pain eventually eases until the next movement when the anal tissues are stretched and disrupted again. This starts a cycle of events; reluctance to open bowels leading to constipation, hard stools that are difficult to pass increasing anal pain when they are evacuated. Anal fissures are often caused by passing a hard stool from constipation. For visitors to the tropics constipation is 44

a threat. Constipation can be avoided and eased by eating fresh fruit, vegetables and drinking adequate amounts of fluids. Other causes of anal fissure are inflammatory bowel disease and cancer of the anus and rectum. Treatment of anal fissures may be simply the application of anaesthetic creams or protective lotions such as zinc and castor oil. While most anal fissures heal within two or three weeks, some may become chronic and require surgery. The surgery is a simple matter of making an incision in the anal sphincter to relieve pressure when opening the bowels. The wound heals within one or two weeks of surgery but some will suffer delayed healing.
