Dear James, I went to a club and was disgusted to see a guy wearing a T-shirt with a Nazi swastika on. I find this abhorrent and unacceptable and would like to raise awareness because this is now getting out of hand. Despite what the sycophants say, there is no excuse for this. Why adorn these symbols of mass genocide and degradation? What possesses them? I believe it is in order to provoke farang without knowing the full horrors of the era. This has to stop. Would Thai people wear garments depicting the Khmer rule of terror and the killing fields? Would farang wear garments depicting the Burmese sacking of Ayutthya? I felt so strongly about this issue that I did confront the perpetrator and told him he was “jai dam”. His reaction said it all when he flushed scarlet red and went off to change his T-shirt. So I believe that Thai people do have some, albeit limited, knowledge of the Holocaust. JK (Chiang Mai) Dear JK, thanks for this, and I invite other readers to let us know their views. JB. SPECIAL Look great, feel great! We all know that the cosmetics companies have enjoyed a boom from contemporary boys, who now rival the girls in purchasing products that redeem and rejuvenate but this effect has now spread to specialist clinics like Bangkok’s Regenerative Medical Solutions. This month, we talk to RMS’s managing director, Kyra Virulchanya. She has a Bachelors and Masters in Applied Communications, received from Bangkok University (International Program). “I became interested in health and healing during my university years. This eventually sparked my move into the medical industry, though my interest mainly lies in the realm of alternative and regenerative therapies. After starting out in a Wellness Centre of a big hospital I eventually moved into the Regenerative Medical Industry. Working at RMS Clinic, I have gotten to know some very interesting, highly intelligent and innovative people working in the field of Regenerative Medicine.”

Sir Elton Hercules John is arguably the most successful and highly recognisable gay man of his generation. The Elton John Aids Foundation has raised more than 200 million US Dollars, he has scooped up virtually every award there is for his craft and this month he releases his 30th solo studio album, The Diving Board. The debut single from The Diving Board entered the Billboard AC Chart at number 21 in July, marking the 69th time Elton has had a song on the chart in its 52-year history â&#x20AC;&#x201D; exceeding that of any other artist (the next-closest is Barbra Streisand, with 64 entries). He has just been honoured as the first recipient of the prestigious BRITs Icon Award. No stranger to controversy, the Rocket Man talks about the new album, TV talent shows and his two children in this OUT iT special feature. 14

At the age of 66, Elton’s new album, The Diving Board, is a return to his musical roots and his love of soul and gospel music, written with long time lyricist partner Bernie Taupin and produced in Los Angeles by The Union (Elton’s collaborative album with Leon Russell) producer, T-Bone Burnett. Burnett suggested that Elton return to the piano, bass and drums format of his very early years and the result, Elton says, is “the most exciting solo record I’ve done in a long, long time.” The album was written in three days but the release date was pushed back more than once as new material was added and the perfectionist piano man made revisions. He says it is, “The most piano-oriented album of my career” adding, “It’s my most adult album”. In total, the album’s release has been pushed back four times but it will be out on September 24th.

Elton’s vocal range may have narrowed since his 1984 surgery to remove polyps from his vocal chords but there is no doubt that his playing gets better with every passing year and if you buy the Deluxe Edition of the new album you’ll be treated to 19 brand new tracks that include 3 instrumental songs of exceptional quality. Amazingly, these 3 piano pieces were not composedthey were performed extemporaneously and recorded in one take; a reflection of Elton’s supreme talent and incredible confidence. Elton has definite views on the current pop culture that provides wannabes instant stardom: “Nobody on The Voice in England has had a hit record; nobody on The Voice in America has had a hit record. They’re nonentities. Those talent shows propel people into stardom that aren’t ready for it and they haven’t got the talent for. It breaks my heart when they are cast aside.” Elton says that the title track of the new album is about the pitfalls of fame: “It’s about someone like Lindsey Lohan, who had everything at the start, she was a fantastic actress, a great recording artist, and then it went tragically wrong because of drugs and the people she was hanging around with. For a young star like Justin Beiber, it’s hard. To go through that fame when you haven’t had a childhood and then you want to grow up- it’s hard. Luckily, fame came to me when I was 23 and 16

then I lived my teenage years through my fame!” The image of a diving board is on the cover of the record and Elton feels like he is diving into the unknown: “That’s why I’m so excited; I’ve got this new relationship with T. Bone, I think this is probably one of the best records of my career. I’m not going to stop performing or making records- there’s no game planlife’s about evolving. I didn’t plan to have my children. It was because I went to an orphanage in the Ukraine and saw a little boy we wanted to adopt but couldn’t because of the laws there and it broke my heart. David sat me down and said, ‘why don’t we have our own?’ I’ve always said I’m too selfish, too set in my ways but that little boy was trying to tell me something- life sometimes comes up with little signs for you- and he way

saying, ‘you know what, you change your ways and see what it does for you.’ Having the two boys has made me the happiest person in the world. I love David very much, we’ve been together twenty years but having children is something else- it’s a different kind of love.” On the very first day that civil partnership was available in the UK, Elton was there with David and he says that the same will happen when marriage is ratified; “We will do it! It’s something we have been given as gay people, a lot of gay people in the world don’t even have the right to exist, like Uganda and places like that but the fact that we’ve been given these chances by the British government is something joyous and something I’m very grateful for and if we’re given them, we should take them up and rejoice. I’m so grateful

we had a civil partnership. It changed my relationship with David- it was great already but it cemented it and it was very moving. Elton still averages more than 120 live shows a year but concedes that when Zachary and Elijah start school, he will have to review that. Meantime, the piano man still challenges himself with improving his performance, writing new songs and breathing new life into his old hits. As an artist, he is peerless. As an ambassador for gay men around the world, he is unmatched. The Diving Board is a double album to delight and is sure to be a successful splash down for the Rocket Man. Hugh Sullivan was born in Cardiff, Wales, 43 years ago. He is an affable and handsome guy who works as a management consultant across south-east Asia but is now based in Chiang Mai. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I first came to Thailand on business when I was living in Singapore and fell in love with the country and its people,â&#x20AC;? he says with an open smile that is sunny enough to melt any heart. He met his delightful Thai lover, Ton, in Bangkok 4 years back and after a ceremonial Lanna style wedding in Chiang Mai, (Hugh arrived atop an elephant!) they adopted the cutest baby son. This was organised before the birth and the child stayed with his mother for a year before he moved in with the happy couple. 22

“We wanted to open a business here, using my experience as a café owner in Singapore,” explains Hugh. Damrong Damrong and nine comrades were digging a large hole in the rocky red clay. They had been happily working at this dismal task for three days. The work was exhausting but for Damrong, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what made it meaningful. It was part of the great effort being waged all over Asia for the Communist cause, which was to bring about the end of oppression by the rich and powerful, the end of the dark ages and the new day dawning. The cadres had been victorious in Vietnam a year ago, and the battles were going well in the countries to the south, except Indonesia. In Cambodia, Pol Pot had 26

just declared the end of tyranny and the beginning of an egalitarian era free of class divisions, while the mountains in Malaysia were now all Communist bastions. The students had taken to the hills in 1976 when the great disappointment came as the military obliterated the democratic movement in Thailand, begun with the 1973 student revolution getting rid of dictators Thanom and Praphas. The military was mounting its last battle, they sighed. The Communists of China and Russia would back the socialist student movement and they would march arm and arm from these mountains in the North down to the Democracy Monument in the heart of Bangkok. It was only a matter of time. After a year, however, the ruddy glow of the red star began to fade.

“It’s just the same as always!” Damrong fumed. “There’s no difference between the Chinese ‘advisers’ and the colonialists. They won’t listen to Thai people. They will never let Thailand be free if they take control.” One group at a time, the students quit their endless digging and left the forests. Damrong went back to Chiang Mai University and entered the College of Education. He took every drama course he could. “There’s more than one way to reform society,” he said to anyone who would listen. In the street theatre that was at the height of its popularity in those days, he took the part of the clown, often cross-dressing, which gave him a little thrill. The short street-side dramas were all about social issues. The students thought they were getting the message across better than their toned-down socialist instructors in the classrooms. Some of Damrong’s idealistic enthusiasm came back. He was alive and burning with energy. He was fuelled with hormones, too, although his testosterone seemed to be in short supply. He learned he was a queen, according to the cognoscenti and he revelled in the katoey role in groups, while in bed he was glad to be a “receiver”. But in the end he rejected the notion of making any radical identity transformation. He would remain a male, and just be ambiguous about it. The years went by. Instead of becoming a teacher, Damrong entered drama. He became part of the famous Patrapavadi Theatre for a while, met important people, slept with some of them, and was marked as a comer. The dream of everyone entering the dramatic arts is to be a star, but stunning good looks are the number one

key. Damrong’s looks were ordinary. His talent, however, was extraordinary. He could design costumes and one director commented, “He can choreograph elephants to do the pas-de-deux.” He never worked with real elephants, but was choreographer for a group of youth in elephant heads at Dream World, and then he became the director of the whole show. Channel 3 picked him up to design sets and costumes for their fantasy and historical dramas. They soon recognized his talent as a tutor of their luscious-looking but performance-challenged, made-forTV stars. Within a year Damrong was art director of three drama series going on at the same time. At that point in his career he had the power to insert social messages into the prime-time movies that half the country was watching. And he did. “You’re coming to the party, aren’t you?” Noom asked at the mall, day before New Year’s Eve. “Where is it?” “Our house,” Noom replied. “There will be a prize for the best costume.” Damrong was tired of the Hi-So drug and alcohol binges his colleagues would be having in mansions on Sukhumvit Road. That’s why he had come home to Chiang Mai. He thought about the invitation. “Everyone will be dressed as women, I imagine!” “Um, I suppose so,” Noom admitted. “It’ll be like old times,” Damrong declared. MURDER MOST FOUL By Brian Baxter

Unsurprisingly, the notorious deaths of well-known personalities attract plenty of media attention. The three most infamous cases are probably the poet, film director and political activist Pier Paolo Pasolini, the silent star and long- time actor Ramon Novarro and the much younger Sal Mineo. All were gay and died under gruesome circumstances. Pasolini was not an actor – and thus not really of concern to this series – but his case remains intriguing in never being satisfactorily explained. A 17-year – old hustler “Joey’ Pelusi was arrested driving the director’s Alfa Romeo after the mutilated body had been found on a beach some 30 minutes outside Rome. This was in 1975 and Pelusi originally confessed to beating his client and then repeatedly running over the body. He got a nine year sentence but later retracted the confession stating that three men connected with the Italian neo-fascist 28

movement had used him as a dupe in order to murder the man who was stirring up trouble. The case was reopened after 35 years but no final conclusion reached. In the case of Ramon Novarro the outcome was somewhat easier. The actor was found dead by his housekeeper. He had been tied up in a stressful position, beaten repeatedly and finally choked on his own blood. Two hustlers, 22-year old Paul Ferguson and his 17–year –old brother Tom were later arrested and convicted. The trial was full of sordid details, mendacity and counter charges between the two youngsters until finally Tom agreed to assume most blame to save his brother from execution. It transpired that Novarro had not used his normal Hollywood out call service but instead invited the boys to drinks. They believed he kept substantial quantities of cash in his home and killed him trying whilst to make him give them the money.

Sal Mineo was allegedly murdered by a young stranger when returning home from a rehearsal of a play he was due to open in Los Angeles. It was three years later that a young drug addict was arrested and accused of robbery and of stabbing the star. Inevitably there was considerable speculation about the encounter but the end result was a lengthy jail sentence for the alleged killer. Ramon Samaniegas was born in 1899 in Durango. In 1916 the handsome teenager fled the Mexican revolution with his well off parents and lived in Los Angeles where he trained as a dancer, took acting lessons and later worked as a singing waiter and as a bar pianist before graduating to ‘extra’ work in movies. Within ten years – as Ramon Novarro- he was a top Hollywood star, groomed as a ’Latin lover’ rival to Rudolf Valentino. The name change was the inspiration of the bi-sexual director Rex Ingram who cast the 23-year-old Ramon in no less

than five major films beginning with The Prisoner of Zenda (as Rupert of Hentzhau) and Scaramouche. In 1925 Novarro took the lead in the first film version of the famous novel Ben Hur. His career looked set. But it was not to happen. With the advent of sound and the arrival of newer style actors his career slipped and after co-starring with Greta Garbo in Mata Hari he worked less during the 1930s, before leaving for Mexico when the USA finally entered the war. Novarro returned to Hollywood in the mid- forties and had a few small film roles before gravitating to television, which offered a steady living. His last role was as a priest in an episode of High Chaparral. On Halloween night 1968 night he forsook his usual service and invited Paul for drinks. His young brother came too and after a drunken evening Tom claimed that he acted aggressively only in response to the actor’s sexual advances. Both youngsters received prison sentences. 29

BBC Entertainment (True Vision Ch. 82) is showing Torchwood, a successful Dr Who (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) spin off. It can be as hammy and cheesy as a croque monsieur but it does star openly gay, hunk hero John Barroman as openly bi, hunk hero, Jack Harkness. We are easy going and home life is relaxed and informal. I often work at home and it is common for me to spend a day at the computer wearing boxer shorts and a singlet. I am not prudish but I find his behavior unusual and unsettling. We are close with our neighbours and they often just drop by. I am afraid that he will answer the door with nothing on but the TV. I feel the need to confront him about this but what should I say? I do not want him to think I am trying to control him or that that I am tired of his body which is pretty hot. My home town, San Francisco, made public nudity legal a few years ago, on the premise that nudity was a matter of personal expression. Although the weather in San Francisco is miserable fifty weeks of the year, there were a surprising number of naked people on the streets and on public transportation. As you might imagine, these were people who would least want to see in the alltogether. After a couple of years the city passed an ordinance that naked people had to carry something (like a towel or newspaper) to place under them if they if they wanted to sit down in public. Finally San Franciscans grew tired and embarrassed by naked people on the street and made public nudity illegal, as it probably should be. Rather than “confront” your partner there are several creative ways you can help him to re-examine his “hobby.” When you return from work, or spend the day at the computer at home, why not wear a white tie and tails? Or dress like Darika? (I am wearing a little pink nightie and a thong.) Or ask him to make fried bacon for your breakfast. I would not suggest that you spend your own time at home naked or he will think that you approve of his behavior. Instead, buy a package of adult nappies (most supermarkets have them) and start wearing them at home. Eventually he will pass his naked phase (and maybe even find the nappies kinky). When that happens, reward him with some very sexy underwear.

Dearest Darika, My 30th birthday is next week and I am very depressed about this because I have no boyfriend and I am afraid I will be too old for this in the future. Skin cancers are increasing and those most likely to succumb are fair skinned Caucasians. There are many types of skin cancer from a fairly common Rodent Ulcer to the most virulent and lethal cancer: Melanoma. You should check your skin monthly looking for new mole-like lesions, changes in existing moles or changes in the nature and colour of the skin. Take particular attention to your back and remember the medics ABCDE code. Asymmetry Asymmetry means one half of a mole does not match the other half. Normal moles are symmetrical. When checking moles or freckles, draw an imaginary line through the middle and compare the two halves. If each side looks different from the other have it checked by a doctor. Border Ragged, blurred or irregular borders are a warning sing that you should have it checked by a dermatologist. Melanoma lesions often have uneven borders. 36

Colour Normal moles are a constant colour, a single shade of brown, but one that has shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white, or red is suspicious. A mole of many shades or that has lightened or darkened should be checked by a doctor. Diameter Take the eraser at the end of a pencil and measure the mole against that if the mole is larger than the diameter of the eraser then it is suspicious. Evolving A mole that is evolving – shrinking, growing larger, changing colour, begins to itch or bleed – should be checked. If a portion of the mole appears newly raised from the skin it must be checked by a doctor. Melanoma lesions often grow in size or change in height rapidly. If you notice any increase in mole-like spots or a change in existing ones you must have it checked by a specialist: it could save your life.

There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/ Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom/Surawong are most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.

Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A* is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, Singapore Pub, See Men, Seek, Blue, and DoorDum. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North, renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations.
