Dear James, Many happy returns for your third birthday. You and the whole team at OUT do a fantastic job in producing a world class magazine. Thank you all for all the hard work. Best wishes, CR (Bangkok) Dear CR, we all love an ‘attaboy’, thank you. JB. Dear Editor, Last month’s special OUT at the Movies was well timed for the second Hobbit film and provided a fresh and well researched insight into one of our best gay icons, Sir Ian McKellan. Brian Baxter must be one of the world’s foremost film buffs and he really excelled himself with this article. Sincerely, JW (London) Dear JW, I am so pleased that you enjoyed it and I have to say that I agree with you- I could not be more happy or proud that Mr Baxter is such an authoritative and illuminating mainstay. JB. Dear James, While there is no doubting the quality of your magazine, why don’t you feature more raunchy pictures of sexy guys- you can never get enough eye candy! DS (Pattaya) Dear DS, I hear what you say but ‘raunchy pictures’ is not what we are about. OUT iT is a magazine that everyone can be proud to be seen reading- if you want porn, there’s plenty on the internet! JB.

As we see in 2014 and wonder how long those New Year’s resolutions will last, OUT in Thailand Magazine celebrates a happy third birthday with a look at our top stories in an eventful year. 2013: That Was The Year That Was....
Last January, we announced all the Readers’ Choice Award winners. Not only are the OUT iT Awards a welcome pat on the back for businesses and individuals who have gone the extra mile to serve the gay community but are also a great guide for first time visitors to the Land of Smiles. Please keep your votes coming in at www.out-in-thailand.com/ awards. In February we met Watercolourist, Worawuth Srakaeo (Wuth), developing an international reputation with his stunning studies of Thai scenes and culture. He was born 34 years ago in Surin City, came to Chiang Mai and spent 12 years as a novice monk. After gaining a BA in Buddhist Studies at Mahachulalongkorn University, he 12
began his formal training in watercolours, mentored by Ajarn Thanakorn Chaijinda- his personal hero. His spiritual background has undoubtedly informed his work: “When I paint, I am concentrated on happiness; it’s like a meditation and that happiness is doubled when I see people smile at the finished work.” Also in Chiang Mai, Leigh Pleasance and partner Ahn talked about their lives together and their stunning new resort, Soulmates Retreat. “We always liked Chiang Mai and stayed for a few months. We met so many interesting people here and we knew this was the place for us,” says Leigh. They started building on their gorgeous 7 rai (3 acre plot) in 2011. Ahn has been wonderful,” he says affectionately as the stunningly attractive 28-year-old Thai pours restorative tea. “He has worked so hard making this place what it is today; his designs, both interior and exterior are fabulous.” Set in breathtakingly bucolic beauty, Soulmates Retreat is a triumph of Lanna style and is already attracting repeat visitors. Just a half hour drive from Chiang Mai, this is the perfect place for a romantic getaway-from-it-all with elephant rides, Flight of the Gibbon, hot springs and hiking around Mai Guang Dam, all nearby. Leigh and Ahn also have mountain bikes available for their more energetic guests. Amongst all the modern conveniences like free WiFi and massage facilities, there is an infinity Magna Pool with unobstructed, spectacular mountain views across verdant paddy fields. A nighttime swim here is made all the more glamorous by the ever-changing colours of neon lights. The rooms are extremely spacious and well appointed, each with an enormous bed and individually cherry picked pictures and objets d’art, displaying Ahn’s design dexterity. A unique and romantic holiday destination. 13
In March, we had an exclusive interview with camp comic and all round good guy Matt Lucas. Matt has been adding to his army of fans now that ‘Little Britain’ and ‘Come Fly With Me’ have been airing on BBC Entertainment in Thailand and his catchphrases are now heard all around the Kingdom. After magical performances as Tweedledum and Tweedledee in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with Johnny Depp and Small Apartments with Billy Crystal, a big movie career looks certain. Matt has never been to Thailand but says, with a wicked smile, “I want to visit- I hear there is an appreciation there of the larger gentleman!” And Thai food? “Yum, yes! I am a noodle fiend.” Matt knows of the burgeoning movement towards gay marriage in Thailand and says, “I don’t personally care whether it takes the form of a religious ceremony because I am not a religious man but obviously I think it’s vital that gay relationships have the same legal standing as straight ones.” When asked if he has a message for OUT in Thailand readers, Matt jokes, “No message. Just give them my phone number!”

In April we previewed Phuket Pride, which was hugely successful and moves to February in 2014 and in the spirit of Pride, we heard from US drag queen, Jeza Belle about Ladyboys. Jeza wrote: ‘Approval neither required or desired.” With these five words, Noxeema Jackson from the 1995 film, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, sends out a clarion call to queens around the world. From Southeast Asia to the streets of New York, Ladyboys everywhere have been gaining a noted place in society ever since. When we step out onto the town each night, our looks and styles may be as numerous as the stars in the sky. Yet, whether we are feminine and poised or edgy and androgynous, one thing is for sure: while we sparkle and shine everyone stops and takes notice. However, when dawn breaks, our brighter selves fade into the sun, slumbering in safety until another moon rises. This leaves one to wonder; for all of our visibility, are we truly accepted or merely tolerated for a passing moment of time?’

May saw yet another world exclusive interview. To coincide with his latest outing as Star Trek’s Spock, Zachary Quinto spoke to James Barnes about coming out. The sophisticated, understated method he employed to come out as a gay man was particularly admirable. No pomp, no big announcement. In the middle of a chat with New York magazine at the end of 2011, he casually prefaced his response to a question about the revival of Angels in America with the words, “As a gay man…” In fact, he said it twice, just to make sure the point got through. It did, of course, though what is pleasing is how the whole thing was treated with grace. There was no massive headline, ‘Yes, I’m Gay’. The actual header actually read, ‘What’s Up Spock?’ The actor called it, “...coming out from behind the wall. Walls now are only as high or as thick or as strong as we allow them to be.” In reality, the 35-year-old actor, writer, producer, agonised over his approach on the subject. He was previously cagey in several interviews before. Quinto admits to staying up until 5 am the night before trying to figure it out. He gave no warning to his publicist or friends or family - his performance was not screen-tested in advance. He just knew it was the right time to confirm what many people already believed, but on his terms, in his words. “I needed it to happen,” he says. “It shouldn’t be the big issue it is, but there was the danger my acting was going to be sculpted with hearsay, rather than being taken seriously for what it is. I wanted to be open and honest, and I wanted the authenticity of who I am to come out. I knew in myself who I was, but I think you have to be honest with all those people around you, and those who invest in your art. That was really important to me, and it was growing more and more important with each passing year.”

Our June cover story was with West Phillips, a hunky 36-year-old photographer who has travelled extensively in South East Asia and has a keen eye for male beauty. He is famed for his work with Asian models, including mega-hunk, Peter Le (Peter Fever). West feels the western advertising market has shunned Asian models in the past: “The western media is known for favouring Caucasian images and I think a lot of westerners accept what is fed to them, in that true beauty and sex appeal that sells is in the form of a Caucasian or sometimes Latin model. Specifically for Asian male models, westerners tend to have a misconception that Asian men are somehow less masculine or sexy than their western counterparts.” There are signs that attitudes are changing but West feels that there is still a way to go before Asian guys are more popular in the mainstream. “Some companies and publications seem to really promote diversity and showcase models from many different ethnic backgrounds, which is great. On the other hand, some are dragging their feet. It boggles my mind sometimes when I see some of the western models who make it on the cover of a magazine, and I think, “Really? THIS is what they consider hot? I don’t get it.” I’ve definitely noticed a trend with the various publications I work with, in that the standards of my nonAsian models is much lower than that of my Asian models.” 17
To illustrate West’s view, Kim Tiem was our July star. Kim was born in Singapore and relocated to Australia five years ago. He is a chemical engineer by profession but his passion is modelling, singing and song writing. He maintains his perfect physical form by pumping iron at least four times every week and shares his thoughts, pictures and music through his dynamic blog at www.kim-thenextphase.blogspot.com.au/. He has starred twice in Thailand Attitude and Australia’s DNA magazine and he has written a song for a movie in Singapore where he used to have regular performing gigs. James Barnes spoke to this multi talented guy and discovered that beauty does not mean dumb. “I am 34 coming to 35,” he says, candidly. “I wrote about being at the precipice of turning 30, summarising what happened in my past and how that affected me. I felt that I had to do something to mark that momentous occasion but soon found out after 30, that age is (cliché alert!) just a number. I wouldn’t want to turn back time because I would lose my maturity, all the lessons I have learnt and the precious experience I have gained. Being a clueless and maladjusted 18 year old again would be torturous!”

In August, we brought you news of another hidden gem in Thailand: The Saimoonbury Resort and its owner, Kusol Saimoon; bright, generous and looks far too young for his age. Kusol is a self-confessed ‘hunky junkie’. Saimoonbury Resort in Chaiprakarn is a couple of hours drive north of Chiang Mai. Negotiating the twists and turns and ups and downs of the mountain roads is rewarded with breathtaking views of bucolic beauty. Volcanic peaks, cloaked in the verdant green shrouds of lush tropical greenery; driving through blizzards of fluttering white butterflies; roadside rivers and streams raging with rainy season life: all gorgeous. If you haven’t hired a car, there are busses from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai but given notice, the resort can transport you from either airport. The Saimoonbury Resort has just 14 rooms but they are on a generous 20 rai (8 acre) plot, which includes a well sized, well stocked, lake, large swimming pool and impeccably manicured gardens. The staff is attentive and efficient but exude a relaxed and friendly rural style that is common of country folk worldwide with that added touch of Thai humility and sweetness. Kusol has built an oasis of tranquillity with superb style and all creature comforts. Whether you need to escape from the bustle of the typical tourist traps for a romantic break with your lover or you just want to explore the real Thailand, Saimoonbury Resort is a perfect choice with a plethora of excellent attractions within easy reach. 19
September saw another superstar interview: Sir Elton Hercules John is arguably the most successful and highly recognisable gay man of his generation. The Elton John Aids Foundation has raised more than 200 million US Dollars, he has scooped up virtually every award there is for his craft and this month he releases his 30th solo studio album, The Diving Board. The debut single from The Diving Board entered the Billboard AC Chart at number 21 in July, marking the 69th time Elton has had a song on the chart in its 52year history — exceeding that of any other artist (the next-closest is Barbra Streisand, with 64 entries). He has just been honoured as the first recipient of the prestigious BRITs Icon Award. No stranger to controversy, the Rocket Man talks about the new album, TV talent shows and his two children in this OUT iT special feature.
October! In this interview with One Direction, the most successful boy band in the world, who got their first break by coming third in Britain’s, ‘The X Factor’, talent show, the boys talk about fortune and fame. Even under the tutelage of Simon Cowell, global domination is still far from a walk in the park for five young teenage boys, thrown together on a whim. We’ll even bet the X Factor hitmaker is still pinching himself over the speed and rate of gargantuan success enjoyed by the One Direction fellows. Only two years ago, they were still hauling themselves up to Fountain Studios every Saturday night, performing whatever cover or artificial melange Cowell had plundered from the Top 40. Niall, Liam, Louis, Zayn and foppyhaired Harry seem to gel on stage and the girls were certainly coming over all light-headed along with a more restrained following of gay boys.

In November, James Barnes celebrated Cher’s new album, ‘Closer to the truth’ with an interview. Few musicians are able to keep their careers alive for more than five decades, but pop diva Cher says her latest album is her “best effort ever.” At the grand age of 67, she has established herself as a leading advocate for gay people all over the world and is an Oscar winning actress who thrilled us with her performance in ‘Burlesque.’ The California native first gained recognition as part of musical duo Sonny & Cher, known for their 1965 hit song “I Got You Babe.” With a singing voice that ranges deep into the lower registers, Cher embarked on a solo career that has made the singer a household name across the world.
In December, our resident movie buff, Brian Baxter noted the release of the second instalment of The Hobbit trilogy with a special profile of Sir Ian McKellen. “I’ve had enough of being a gay icon! I’ve had enough of this hard work. Since I came out I keep getting all these parts and my career has taken off. I want a quiet life. I’m going back into the closet – but somehow I can’t seem to get in, because it’s absolutely jam-packed full of other actors,” says the iconic star.
I first met her, briefly, more than 20 years ago when she was appearing on a UK chat show in London. After the recording, she was in the bar; looking terrific and I asked the director how old she was: ‘Which bit!?’ he said mischievously, referring to the multiple cosmetic surgical interventions about which she has never been reticent. Maybe this preoccupation with appearances has less to do with vanity and more to do with keeping her career alive? “There’s just not the access to older performers that there is to younger performers, especially women, because it’s a young person’s art. More than any other time in history, the people who came up in my time are now having a hard time. We don’t want to stop singing. The Stones don’t want to stop and I don’t want to. But it’s hard. You try to find your niche and stay relevant in your music and you keep going.” 22
Don’t forget, if you missed any of these stories, you can get all our back issues at www.out-in-thailand.com And so to 2014! This year will see more great interviews, fab features and luscious photo spreads, so keep your monthly date with OUT iT Magazine. We wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous gay year. 23

Emerald Green on Blue. Islands have a unique hold on our imaginations. These tiny dots in vast oceans tug at threads of exoticism; escape, survival, adventure. Islands have inspired countless books such as ‘Robinson Crusoe’, more swashbuckling adventure stories of pirates and treasure than you could throw a copy of ‘Treasure Island’ at and films cast islands as places for romance and sexual freedom. Paul Gauguin embraced ‘innocent’ Tahiti producing his most beautiful, mesmerising, paintings but the prisoners of the French and British empires had significantly less agreeable island experiences. Travel companies pump hard to keep the romance of islands alive while countries fight over tiny, inhospitable but strategically valuable islands: Gibraltar, the Falklands Islands and right now the Senkaku (to Japan) and Diaoyu (to China) islands in the East China Sea.
26
Thailand has many islands along its maritime coasts some of which have been immortalised in films such as ‘Blue Lagoon’ and the James Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ filmed on Khao Phing Kan. Less well known are five small islands on which no film crew or private individual can ever set foot; and no others are as valuable or as heavily guarded as The Five Islands off the SW coast of Koh Samui. These hard, brittle, porous limestone islands, sculpted by heavy equatorial rains over 300 million years to form towering, bizarre, jagged surfaces and honeycomb caverns are now home to Cave Swifts. These small birds build edible saliva nests used to produce the unique gelatinous texture of the 400 year old Chinese delicacy, Bird’s Nest Soup. In China and the USA a bowl of this soup could cost US$30 or up to US$10,000 for a kilogram. Health benefits are claimed; they would need to
be from a bowl of lukewarm bird saliva: raised libido, improved voice, enhanced eye focus. While only Thai Government licensed nest gatherers & heavily armed guards are allowed on the islands gay guys visiting Koh Samui can swim, snorkel & splash, in the sparkling azure sea; cruise around the islands in a Long Tail boat as part of an all day, gay only, ‘Emerald Green on Blue’ ocean and massage adventure. The award winning ‘Emerald Green On Blue’ [voted ‘Best gay tour Samui. 2013] takes you to original, simple Samui, a traditional Thai Long Tail boat to cruise The Five Islands, lunch/drinks in beach side restaurant and Man4Man massage and skin treatment. ‘Emerald Green On Blue’ exclusive to Emerald Green Mens Club, for full info & on-line bookings @ http://www. emeraldgreensamui.com/egob.html

Ban Den Friends By Kenneth Dobson
There was a pause. Mack thought Eke had closed down, but then the message came swimming into the box, “Mak who? From Ban Den?” Mack said, “Tell him Mack says HI!” Mike pecked in, “Mak say hi”. A minute later Mack’s cell phone rang. He was very not surprised that the screen said EKE. Mike (Part 1) Mike typed in “R U Christian”. His heart took a leap when the answer came back, “Yes R U 2”. Mack was looking over Mike’s shoulder as he carried out this clandestine correspondence in The Academy office in Chiang Mai. Mike was 20 and an enthusiastic Christian—a member of the national Christian Youth Council. This afforded him his second lifechanging experience, opportunity to attend an international youth rally in the USA. He had come back determined to get to America again. Meanwhile, he was finishing his two-year Associate’s degree in computer business. “Ask him where you can meet him,” Mack suggested. After three or four more texts Mack exclaimed, “Omigosh that has to be Eke!” He thought feverishly. “OK. OK. Tell him you’re here with me and see what he says.” “M hear w/ Mak. No him?”
36
That was the beginning. For Mike it all began with Ekechai. Mike fell passionately in love with the young pastor of the Gospel Light Christian Church. The passion was reciprocated for about six months until Dam came along. Dam displaced Mike in Eke’s affection, which is to say in his quest for a male partner with whom to share his life for years to come. Mike was devastated when the end came. He was certain it had been true love, a match made in heaven, all that. Yet it was decision time. He had been lucky; it turned out, to hook up with a Thai Christian on the Internet. The Thai Christian gay world was small, far too small for an anonymous liaison. Mike, however, was a stubborn young man, which translated into “selfish” some of the time, although he was simultaneously one of the most sentimental, romantic, generous and tender-hearted gay men his age. On this one point he was trying to be unyielding: his lover had to be a Christian. A little older was good, too. Good body, good sex, good health – all plusses. And Eke had them all. His one potential drawback was his marriage and two
children. OK, you can’t have everything. Eke wasn’t rich, either. Nor American. Yes, a rich, gay, sexy, hot American Christian would be perfect. Still, Eke melted Mike’s heart. The night Eke told Mike they could be friends but not fans Mike took it very hard. Eke was surprised. He had thought their relationship was very clear. Eke had never promised Mike a long-term relationship. He had never imagined Mike was looking for one. All Mike could talk about was America, America, America. “For heaven’s sake,” Eke had exclaimed. “You were only there THREE WEEKS! Get over it!” Instead, Mike had committed the common but disastrous gay mistake of simply folding his lover into his fantasy. Now his dream included Eke-n-Mike, a hyphenated unit living blissfully in the green, green hills of Pennsylvania. This was not a fantasy that Eke wanted anything to do with. The fantasy that motivated him was to find a well-built, upwardly mobile, independent, upwardly mobile, lusty, already fairly upwardly mobilized partner who would join him as the third side of his life, which already included church and family. Eke’s church salary was paltry and his children were going to need ever more expensive clothes, books and tuition payments. That, in fact, was the tacit condition his wife Sirinute exacted in order to be quiet about her role as the “major wife” in a relationship in which the “minor wife” would be a gay male. How Eke came up with the funds she couldn’t care less, as long as he did. Young, expensive Mike, a long time yet to go in his education, didn’t fit into this picture Eke and Sirinute had agreed upon.
Dam, on the other hand, had higher potential. Eke was not altogether cold and calculating about his reasons for dropping Mike. There were other ways that Mike had not turned out as Eke hoped. Mike was irresponsible as well as emotionally, socially and financially needy. It was Mike’s inability to sustain his interest in a project, any project, long enough to work out the details and get it done that disappointed Eke most. Mike forever counted on his bubbly personality and exaggerated sense of fun to get him forgiveness and to recruit others to pick up the pieces and finish things. Mike was actually no longer Eke’s dream-boy even before Dam showed up. Mike cried all night at Noom and Mack’s house. Then Mack sat him down and gave him a sharp talking-to. “One night spent crying is long enough. Pick yourself up. It is time to decide. Are you going to run your life or hitch onto somebody else’s life? Where do you go from here? You need a university degree if any of your dreams are going to be sustainable. Noom and I’ll help you with tuition as long as you stay on schedule toward finishing your degree.” Mike did go to the university and graduated on schedule. But he never really got over hoping his “friendship” with Eke would turn back into something more. Mike was extremely persistent about that, and about going to America.

Worried About Currencies I am living in Thailand and have savings in other countries. They are mostly in US Dollars but I have some Japanese Yen in a bank account. I will start to live on my pension and from my reserves when I retire next year. What should I do about protecting myself from variations of the Thai Baht against income in other currencies? Doug

currencies further enhance spreading risks over future gains. We also need to make sure we do not duplicate your pension currency in your investments. In addition, when managing remittances into Thailand, there are some things which can assist. These include longer periods between transfers avoiding bank charges and using forex services to lock in highly competitive rates for each individual transfer. Dear Doug, Good question. If anyone tells you they can predict future currency rates they are misguided. No one actually knows. The best way to manage your way through this is by placing investments into different currencies to spread the risk of any one of them changing against the Thai Baht. This can be achieved using specific investments which allow multi currencies. Withdrawals can then be made in any one currency, depending what is good today. Various investment 40

ASK KA DARI
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@ out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website:www.askdarika.com
Dear Darika, Although still early, I am thinking of possibly move to Thailand and maybe even start a small business, eg, trading co, once I retire. Any comment, insight, lead, advise, friends’ example, experience and lessons learnt on this? Do you think this would be a feasible plan? Also, what do you think gay social life would be for a gay Asian American in Thailand? Would I fall into the crack between Farang-land and Thai-land? Gentle Reader, Darika has a lot to say on this subject. There are many great reasons to live here--the weather, food and people, and you can live well without being wealthy. A few of my friends have slowly migrated to our happy Kingdom since I made the move 16 years ago. Most of them had 42
visited many times but soon learned that living here is quite different than visiting. For the first 18 months the newly-arrived are dazzled by the colourful, glossy patina of Thailand. That is usually followed by the “what the hell was I thinking?” phase. Simple things most take for granted are sometimes challenging: paying bills, health care, relationships, police, bureaucracy, what some have called “Thainess.” Survivors then lapse into the “I give up—there are things I will never understand, but it’s better here than Palm Springs” phase. During the course of a day, I tend to shift between all three.. Retirement and running a business are subject to different rules here. To have a business you will technically be working, which requires a work permit and a nonimmigrant business visa. Unless you work for someone else you have to register your own company, with the majority of shareholders being Thai, and paid-in capital in the millions of baht. (Our businesses are owned by our maids, boyfriends, and employees, which is risky.) A retirement visa is easier to get but you cannot legally work. Regardless of which path you choose, be prepared for a regular ritual of going to the Immigration Department every 90 days to prove you are still alive, and renewing your visa once a year. In Bangkok this means a trek to a mammoth government complex half way to Cambodia. I go with my lawyer’s wife, who is in the business of helping foreigners deal with visas and work permits. She handles the paperwork and knows all the angles. I see people sitting there for hours waiting for their number to come up. I walk in, sit down at the officers’ desk (the same two women I have
seen for the last 15 years), chit chat, compliment each others’ jewelry, and surrender my passport, which I get back in about a week. I cannot imagine dealing with this without help. You need to learn to speak at least some Thai or you won’t survive easily. Since you are Asian Thais will automatically assume you are Thai. Some retirees live in what you call “farang-land,” speak no Thai, have few Thai friends, and socialize only with other foreigners. Personally, I have not chosen that path. I live in a condo that is 98% Thai. As for social life, Thai people tend to accept just about everyone. Ultimately, your social life will be dictated by who you choose to accept.
a lawyer who can handle bureaucracy and uncomfortable entanglements. With a work permit or retirement visa you can open a bank account. It’s not a bad idea to have another in Singapore or Hong Kong. There have been 19 coups here in my lifetime and the value of the baht is erratic, making some who survive on pensions from abroad disadvantaged. Lastly, come with patience, survivor skills, and a sense of humour and you will have a happy life here in paradise. Love,
Many farang have problematic love lives, which helps to keep me in business. Status is an important element in Thai culture, so you are potentially bling for some lucky guy. For decades I have heard stories about relationships gone bad because of money or property. A few young Thai gays have become quite expert at extracting money from foreigners with sad stories. Most of us have our own story that begins with something like “Mom’s buffalo died.” Honestly, this is an industry that farang have encouraged, to their own detriment, and which reflects badly on the majority of Thai people who are not swindlers. “Take care of each other” has become a cliché for “please support me because I am lazy or unemployable but you get sex.” Buy an x-ray-proof wallet. I don’t date guys who do not have a job, a sense of personal responsibility, and a credit card. Finally, find a decent supermarket, a good dentist, a bar where the staff will get to know you and treat you well, and

Tips to avoid Jet Lag By Doc John
Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that can affect anyone who quickly travels across multiple time zones; it is caused when your body’s internal clock is out of sync with the new time zone. Jet lag can significantly reduce your holiday comfort. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help prevent or minimise it. Symptoms can vary but may include: • Disturbed sleep — such as insomnia, early waking or excessive sleepiness • Daytime fatigue • Difficulty concentrating or functioning at your usual level • Stomach problems, constipation or diarrhoea • A general feeling of not being well • Muscle soreness • Symptoms worsen the farther you travel Sunlight influences the degree of jet lag, so attempt to ease your adjustment to the new time zone by exposure to natural daylight: follow the rhythms of the local time. Some 44
research shows that changes in cabin pressure and high altitudes may contribute to some symptoms of jet lag, regardless of travel across time zones. Not drinking enough water during your flight can dehydrate you. In addition, drinking too many beverages with caffeine or alcohol during your flight can affect your sleep and cause some symptoms of jet lag. Factors that increase the likelihood you’ll experience jet lag include: • Number of time zones crossed. The more time zones you cross, the more likely you are to be jet lagged. • Flying east: some find it harder to fly east, when time is lost, than flying west, when you gain time. • Frequent flyers: pilots, flight attendants and business travellers are most likely to experience jet lag. • Older people may need more time to recover from jet lag than younger adults.
OUT in Bangkok
I
f If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/ Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom/Surawong are most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A* is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. Up2 Salon* will make you beautiful as will the RMS Clinic with a complete program of excellent treatments. Tarntawan Place Hotel* is at the centre of the action. Eat at Dick’s Cafe*, Telephone Pub* is always busy and night owls party at DJ Station*. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly 46
Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, Singapore Pub, See Men, Seek, Blue, and DoorDum. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner

OUT in Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North, renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations.
Inside the moated, old city walls, find the inviting Yokka Dok* bar/ restaurant and the newly opened Paradise Massage. Just outside the wall is the excellent Miguels Mexican Restaurant. CU Bar and Secrets Bar are both near the night bazaar and are great local watering holes. Close to Narawat Bridge is the luxurious and peaceful River House Massage. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Clubsensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, an established Chiang Mai institution. Gemini Massage has regular promotions and is recommended. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have a hip and happening scene of bars. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male*, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Cosmos in Nimman Soi 1 is an amazing store full of decorative objets d’art and furnishings. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned 60
for sweet and personal service. See Man Pub* on the canal road is a late night choice. Radchada Garden Cafe* for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink with friends. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more go to The Blues Club and Sanctuary Spa is just inside the south west corner of the wall and is a one stop for facial, body and massage treatments. Just half an hour from the city centre towards Doi Saket is your unique romantic getaway, Soulmates Retreat and Flight of The Gibbon* is a thrilling adventure attraction. The Podology Centre* for one stop foot care. A couple of hours north of the city, try Saimoonbury Resort in Chaiprakarna slice of real Thailand. OUT in Phuket
P
huket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna* and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage Inn complete with bar and restaurant will delight. * Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms and the Dolphin Hotel is a landmark.. The disco at Boat Bar* is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike.
78
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. The recently refurbished Club One Seven* guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. Stay at brand new and sparkling CC’s Hideaway, Phuket Gay Homestay with regualar pool parties and B-B-Q’s close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. Phuket Travel Company* are renowned. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com & gaypatong.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner
