OUTPOST
Your letters in print and online editor@out-in-thailand.com
Dear James, WOW! Your July feature about Kim, the model was a real sizzler and he seems like such a nice guy as well as being totally sexy. When he said that he was into group sex, it sent my mind and heart racing so please can you send me his contact details? With thanks, PR (Koh Samui) Dear PR, whilst I cannot agree more with your sentiments on this, I know that you will understand that I cannot give you Kim’s contact details but I have forwarded your message to him so who knows what will happen next time he is in Thailand! JB. Dear Editor, Your July cover story was all well and good and the young man featured was most attractive but why are you giving so much space to a Singaporean model? Surely, OUT in Thailand Magazine should be focussed on local talent? Regards, FW (Bangkok) Dear PR, thank you for this thoughtful observation. As I perceive part of my job as promoting Thailand on the international stage (in April, OUT iT was downloaded in 105 countries worldwide) it is entirely appropriate that we feature a Singaporean model who lives in Australia and has appeared in Attitude Thailand. Having said that, I welcome Thai talent to step up to the plate and claim their slice of the limelight! Models are welcome to approach me at editor@out-in-thailand.com as another part of my remit is to encourage new talent. I have also been thinking about a competition to find a new Thai model so, over to you and OUT iT readers! JB.

A THAI UNIVERSITY OPENS UP TO LGBT One of the top three universities in Thailand has introduced two LGBT courses, a breakthrough in the country and the region. Doug Sanders reports from Bangkok.
University in the northern capital. The revised Thammasat University course catalogue, published early this year, lists two new courses, “Voice of Transgender”, and “Introduction to Queer Theory”.
On July 6th, around ten students met for the first time in the credit course “Voice of LGBT” in the graduate program in Women’s Studies at Thammasat University in Bangkok. Thammasat is the second oldest Western style university in the Kingdom. Its graduate campus is in the old royal city, close to the Grand Palace, the National Museum and the most auspicious Buddhist Temples. Thammasat is known as the more activist or leftist of the major universities. It has a memorial on the campus to students killed in political resistance. The founder of the university was the leader of the People’s Party, which overthrew the absolute Monarchy in the 1930s.
A new lecturer has been hired, Pogkrong Boon-Long, whose thesis was on gay saunas. He is the only male teaching in the Women’s Studies program. He changed the title of “Voice of Transgender” to “Voice of LGBT”. He is unwilling to teach “Introduction to Queer Theory”, personally critical for much of what passes as “Queer theory”.
Thammasat has the oldest Women’s Studies program in Thailand. Perhaps there is only one other, at Chiang Mai 10
The next series of speakers are Thai, including Tang, a founder of the lesbian organization Anjaree and Note of the Thai Transgender Alliance. Other Thai activists follow. Is this the first credit course in ASEAN specifically on LGBT issues (as opposed to survey courses that
may include a section on sex and gender diversity)? And is this not only the first, but unique in its focus on LGBT activism? Doug Sanders is a retired Canadian law professor, living in Thailand since 2003. He can be contacted at sanders_ gwb @ yahoo.ca
The first class was on the background to LGBT activism, and brought in the present writer, Professor Douglas Sanders, to talk about the international history of LGBT resistance and activism. His presentation was translated into Thai. It ended with a ten minute exert from the video “The Time is Now” on LGBT activism in the context of UN human rights initiatives. The full video is available on line: vimeo.com/67796115. 11

A Slice of the Real Thailand By James Barnes
Kusol Saimoon is bright, generous and looks far too young for his age. He has spent most of the last twenty years in England where his undoubted business acumen is applied to the property market. His British boyfriend of fourteen years, Simon Holt, is the UK’s leading horseracing journalist and together, they spend as much time as they can in Thailand. Kusol, a self-confessed ‘hunky junkie’, has a ready wit and parallel to his European career, has developed a beautiful Thai holiday resort with his sister, Wasana, in their birth town. 14
Saimoonbury Resort in Chaiprakarn is a couple of hours drive north of Chiang Mai. Negotiating the twists and turns and ups and downs of the mountain roads is rewarded with breath-taking views of bucolic beauty. Volcanic peaks, cloaked in the verdant green shrouds of lush tropical greenery; driving through blizzards of fluttering white butterflies; roadside rivers and streams raging with rainy season life: all gorgeous. If you haven’t hired a car, there are busses from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai but given notice, the resort can transport you from either airport. The Saimoonbury Resort has just 14 rooms but they are on a generous 20 rai (8 acre) plot, which includes a well sized, well stocked, lake, large swimming pool and impeccably manicured gardens. The staff is attentive and efficient but exude
a relaxed and friendly rural style that is common of country folk worldwide with that added touch of Thai humility and sweetness. Kusol and Wasana have built an oasis of tranquillity with superb style and all creature comforts. The Saimoonbury Restaurant serves clean tasting, northern Thai specialities that sit up and smile on the plate and their roadside coffee shop stocks the best beverages and pastries in town and transforms into a night time bar where there is live music, every night, enjoyed by a crowd of young locals who all look like they are in paradise. Maybe they are! The Saimoonbury Resort & Restaurant is the place to stay, eat and be seen in Chaiprakarn. With a charming lakeside location, the attractive guest 15
rooms and chic restaurant are proving the most popular place in town - and a regular venue for parties and business conferences. The modern bedrooms are all en-suite and air-conditioned. Guests are guaranteed a warm and friendly northern Thai welcome with seasonal fruit baskets and flowers and each room boasts a 32” LCD television screen with cable channels, tea and coffee-making facilities, a well-stocked mini bar, bathrobe and hotel guests have free use of the swimming pool. The restaurant offers the option of dining indoors or ‘al-fresco’ at the water’s edge or on the waterfall terrace, with a menu which combines the most traditional of Thai cuisine with innovative new dishes to satisfy all appetites and palates, 16
complimented by the best of wines. Whether you need to escape from the bustle of the typical tourist traps for a romantic break with your lover or you just want to explore the real Thailand, Saimoonbury Resort is a perfect choice with a plethora of excellent attractions within easy reach. Ornate Lanna temples of exquisite opulence, top peaks that proffer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside are a feature of the area. Also worth a visit is the vast and beautiful Doi Wiang National Park blanketed by fertile forests and is the source of the Mae Fang River. The varieties of plants and different altitudes of the area (300-1,834 meters), the National Park hosts many different kinds of wild animals including muntiacus
muntjak, wild boars, gorals, porcupines, wild rabbits, monkeys, masked palm civets, squirrels and tree shrews. Many species of birds have been spotted in the area including white-rumped shama, turtle doves, hawks, red junglefowl and white fowls. Close to the resort, is Fang Hot Springs and the Tham Tab Tao caves, which house the Buddhist Temple of Wat Tham Tab Tao. At the foot of the limestone cliffs are two stone staircases leading up to two caverns. On the left is Tham Pha Chak (Dark Cave), spot lit and containing gold leaf covered statues of Buddha, including a large reclining Buddha with disciples. On the right is Tham Pha Kha (Light Cave), which is
illuminated by a shaft of daylight from the ceiling, hence the name. This is the show cave with laddered steep walls for the adventurous visitor. The Saimoonbury Resort is a secret gem, popular but undiscovered by mass tourism and a perfect choice for the discerning gay guest who is guaranteed the very warmest of welcome and a slice of the real Thailand. The Magic of Roy Bailey By Jai Pee
I first came across Roy Bailey some 23 years ago when I was relatively new to the live folk scene. I was sitting in a small club at the Sidmouth Folk Festival in Devon, UK, and had gone to hear another act. I almost left but some unfathomable feeling persuaded me to stay for the final act of the afternoon. On to the small stage stepped this rotund figure, with stubble on his chin, clutching his guitar and wearing braces. I was half-expecting a yokel-type song about fertilizer and potato growing. Instead, I was mesmerized from the very opening chords strummed lightly yet forcefully of Si Khan’s wonderful song “Take me back to Georgia”. But the real mind-blowing part was when Roy began to sing – his voice is loaded with evocative emotion; his ability to emphasise and bring out the meaning of the words so clearly and meaningfully is as near to magic as you will ever get; and with his impeccable delivery and choice of songs, there is nothing like it. Those 30 minutes in 1989 are among the most memorable of my life in the world of folk. Roy was flabbergasted when I rushed up after the tumultuous applause had died down and bought all four of the albums he had with him. 18
sluggish world of academia, Roy made a spectacular leap from junior lecturer to head of department in just 7 years ending up at Sheffield Polytechnic College, now Sheffield Hallam University – and this is where he completed his academic career in 1989 as professor and two years later became Professor Emeritus. Roy loves the guitar, which he began playing in 1956 and his first college efforts were in skiffle groups, very popular at the time and inspired by the late Lonnie Donegan.
He was born in 1935 and moved to within the sound of Bow Bells in East London when he was in his first year, almost a true Cockney. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Ilford, then a leafy suburb in Essex and now part of Greater London. Roy went on to Leicester University where he read Sociology and then completed a Post Graduate Certificate of Education. In the
He opened (with others from the city) Leicester Folk Song Club in 1962 and began his long journey as a folk singer. He sang in Leicester and around the country in various folk clubs, meeting many other famous singers including Ewan MacColl, A.L.(Bert) Lloyd, Peggy Seeger, Pete Seeger, Martin Carthy, Leon Rosselson, Dave Swarbrick and many more. Roy slowly developed his repertoire during the late 60s and early 70s as he found himself wanting to sing less about yesterday (traditional songs) and more about the world in which he was living. His current canon has developed significantly since he retired in 1989 and since he had the freedom to begin to tour the world, including Europe, Canada, the USA and Australia. But Roy is not a songwriter – in his own words he is ‘more an anthologist/collector of songs’. He is a remarkable man and performer and he captivates audiences across the world, just as he captivated me in 1989. The songs he performs are largely ones that prick the conscience – songs about social injustice, unworthy discrimination
and prejudice. Many of the songs he has recorded are now legends in the folk field as a result of his performances – for example songs that describe the appalling prejudices against gay people (Si Khan’s Curtains of Old Joe’s House), songs that vividly recall the injustices and fruitlessness of war (Ray Hearne’s Streets of Sarajevo), songs that deal with avoidable disaster (Rob Johnson’s Herald of Free Enterprise) and historical atrocities (Charlie Murphy’s The Burning Times).
In 2000 he was awarded a British M.B.E. for Services to Folk Music – an honour that he later returned in protest at the Government’s Foreign Policy with regard to Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. In 2003, Roy and veteran and distinguished politician Tony Benn were awarded “Best Live Act” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for their program ‘Writing on the Wall’. Tony Benn cites Roy Bailey 19
as “the greatest socialist folk singer of his generation.” This act is still being performed in the UK and with Tony Benn now a young 87 years old, this is one of the UK’s most remarkable achievements in this field. Roy, an openly gay man who has sustained a loving family of a wife and two children throughout his distinguished career, is now 77 years old. Ten years ago or so he retired from the folk scene releasing what he stated in a BBC Radio 2 interview to be his last album, Coda. This, however, has proved to be one of the longest ‘coda’s’ in history – and he shows no signs of stopping, just slowing down a little!
that Roy’s voice was as powerful as anything he had ever heard with its strength and compassion. Introducing Roy at his highly successful Royal Albert Hall concert in 1998 Chris Smith, the former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, described Roy as “one of folk music’s finest performers and one of the world’s best carriers of the people’s message.” However, one line from the Fred Small song ‘Everything Possible’ strikes the richest chord for me: “If you give your friends the best part of yourself, they’ll give the same back to you”. That says a lot and a great deal about Roy as well.
Now with more than 50 years as a performer, Roy is as compelling, entertaining, thought provoking and moving as ever. Billy Bragg once stated

HARBIN AND BEIJING: THE MAGIC OF ICE AND SNOW by Pied Piper
Yet, as a treat for that special person, why not consider a trip where he will not only see snow, but can marvel also at a host of brilliant snow and ice creations?
Travelling around South-East Asia, one constant refrain I hear from young gay friends is, “I want to see snow.” Those of us hailing from colder climes take it for granted. We know also that for every sunny morning with crisp white snow there follows a week’s worth of melting grey sludge! 22
Asia boasts two of the world’s great Ice and Snow Sculpture Festivals – Harbin and Sapporo. With a population of around six million, the city of Harbin, 1,000 kms northeast of Beijing, is way off most travellers’ radar. If they have even heard of it, it will be either because of its heavy Russian influence, a result of all the White Russian émigrés who fled here after the Russian Revolution; or because it was part of Manchuria, annexed by the Japanese in the 1930s and where they installed the dethroned last Emperor, Pu Yi. The centre of Harbin shows signs of its Russian heritage everywhere, from restaurants to street signs to an Orthodox
cathedral complete with onion dome. If you stay at the Holiday inn, you are at one end of Zhong Yang Street, a long pedestrian zone which takes you down to the river. Soon after you start, though, take one of the streets to your right, and you soon come to the main square with that astonishing Cathedral. Back on Zhong Yang Street, you’ll pass various ice sculptures glistening in the sun. At the other end is the river. Here is a host of activities from slides down the bank, ice skittles, families on sleds propelled with ski-poles and, most picturesque of all, horse-drawn carriages for rides across the river. But it’s the huge Ice and Snow Parks that you want, both situated across the river. Ideally, you should see the Ice Park twice – in the wintry daytime sun, and again at night when all the sculptures are 23
lit from inside. Unfortunately traffic is bad and taxis hard to come by – so you have to negotiate expensive round-trip rates because there is no guarantee you’ll find one to get you back! What hits you when you first enter is its utterly amazing scale. The sculptures themselves are huge. They are essentially copies of existing buildings, and include a Russian Cathedral as the centrepiece, part of Beijing’s Forbidden City, even a Thai temple. Entrance is not cheap – about 100RMB (US$16) in the daytime and 300RMB in the evening. But worth it, because you will never have seen anything like this before. The next day, get a taxi over to the Snow Park. Despite its size and the variety of other things to see, the snow sculptures 24
are the main attraction. Some are on a truly massive, almost unbelievable scale, stretching high across the horizon and longer than a football field. An added attraction not far away is a fascinating Siberian Tiger Reserve offering rare photo opportunities. When visiting the Festival, take lots of very warm clothing. The best thermal underwear and thick boots are essentials. With temperatures varying from -12ºC at midday to -25ºC at night, I assure you you’ll need them! A word about logistics. The January Festival is hugely popular and many of the city’s western chain hotels get booked up months in advance. Usually I prefer to make my own travel arrangements, but for Harbin, I thoroughly recommend
using an agent. This will make all your arrangements so much easier and cheaper. Linking three nights in Harbin with three in Beijing makes a fascinating short holiday. From Bangkok, you have to change planes somewhere and Beijing is ideal for connections. Not only is Beijing a must-see city, it’s so much more pleasant in winter without hoardes of other tourists. After Harbin, Beijing at around 0ºC felt positively warm! Since traffic is always bad, take the subway whenever possible and try to stay in a hotel close to one of the major attractions. Another benefit at this time of year: Beijing hotels are a lot cheaper than in the summer.
Beijing’s major sights are at the top end of the spectacular scale. The Forbidden City at its heart, completed almost 600 years ago and ‘forbidden’ for most of that time to all but the Imperial family, is simply jaw dropping. Enter by Tiananmen Square under the portrait of Mao. Pay for one of the audio guides, pass through the massive gateway and prepare to be awe-struck for the next couple of hours. After exiting at the north end, cross over and walk up to the Wanchun Pavilion with its amazing view over the entire complex. After descending, you are quite close to the large Lama Temple complex, the Temple of Confucius and the mansion of Prince Gong. Here, too, are some of the fast-disappearing hutongs – old low-rise courtyard housing 25
approached by narrow alleyways. Not far away is the enormous circular Temple of Heaven. Part of another large complex, this is where the Emperors came to pray and intercede with the Gods. I suppose most visitors want to see the Great Wall, but I think it vastly overrated and always packed with tourists. Better, I suggest, to spend half a day in the extensive grounds of the Summer Palace. Even though destroyed by British and French troops in 1860, the Empress Dowager had it largely rebuilt. Beijing has a smallish gay scene with several well-known bars and clubs. 26
In Chaoyang District near the east side of Workers’ Stadium, Destination is arguably Beijing’s hippest and most popular gay club, always packed with tall, slim handsome guys at week-ends. Also check out the trendy bars and restaurants in the Sanlitun District. If you want to make arrangements for company during your trip, I recommend the fridae.com website. I encountered several students keen to meet up in both Harbin and Beijing! So, snow time can also be fun-time. But then, if you are with your special one, I suspect he may not approve!

EAT OUT IN Chiang Mai By Mark Whitman
How do you like your restaurants? Small and intimate, cheap and cheerful, stylish or smart casual? I’m happy with any, depending on mood and the company, but might well opt for the smart casual look, offering decent food in convivial surroundings – at fair prices. If that’s your taste too, then the revamped Pern’s in Huay Kaew Road is well worth a visit. They are in the same premises, a little way up from Soho Bar. As with that well established watering hole they cater for many of the gay residents of the City of Chiang Mai as well as a goodly number of visitors. Brian and his Thai partner are still in charge, with the usual attractive and attentive staff. 28
The owners, staff and location may be the same but there have been major and welcome changes to the eatery (prices remain the same!). These cover three main areas. The first thing you’ll notice is the ‘new look’. As you enter, the bar, originally tucked away to the back of the restaurant, has been extended all the way along the left hand side, creating a comfortable and lively background to the main eating area.
roccan, although happily the choices have been reduced from the previously over extensive range. The tapas menu is offered separately and can be used as starters or for a whole meal. You simply tick those required and order up extras if you fancy. The tapas range from 20 baht for ‘one bite’ pieces up to 65 for such choices as paella, deep fried goujons or pork, beef or lamb selections and vegetarian options.
The well- stocked bar has about 12 seats and is ideal for a drink, casual dining or the new tapas menu, which provides a welcome addition to the main menu, which remains basically ‘Mediterranean’ – Turkish, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Mo-
The other plusses are the arrival of excellent draft beers of which the star – at least for me – in the potent Leffe Blond. These make a perfect accompaniment to the tapas but there are house wines by the glass or a choice of bottles and other
beers also available On Wednesdays there is 10 % off the beer and wines are half price. Brian has also continued the ‘specials’ on Wednesday nights and these are value at around 300 baht for such things as slow cooked lamb or salmon fillets served with a generous amount of vegetables. Finally, the actual eating area is better lit, with tables nicely spaced and the overall decoration less Spartan. Pern’s is open every evening except Mondays and they also offer a new catering service for parties and groups at a location of your choice. Telephone: 086 197 6981.

friends’ events, yet otherwise avoided the area. She was the first of the group to get a job in the Traditional Medicine Hospital after finishing the massage course. This gave her the first real freedom and funds to explore her gender orientation. She began oestrogen pills to enhance her bosom, but it was too late to stop her voice dropping. She let her hair grow long and she was in time to stop her penis from developing beyond the dimension of her little finger. Then she launched a program to accumulate the funds to have a complete reassignment, while renting a house within walking distance of work. Ying was undoubtedly one of the most competent traditional Thai deepmuscle massage therapists in Chiang Mai. She was strong, skilful and steady. She could handle one customer after another, non-stop. She had enough different techniques at her command to fill three-hour appointments. They became common for her.
as apprentice wood carvers in a shop in Bo Sang, better known as the “Umbrella Village.” They rode three to a motorcycle for an hour a day each way, or sometimes slept on the platform under the owner’s house.
Life in the carver’s village was equanimous. The carver’s community was a close-knit family. In fact, the shop owner thought of these young people as his children, which had its plusses and minuses. The food was good but the pay was bad, just as it would have been back home. It was one of the mural-size projects that ended the good times. Without warning, one morning the house was surrounded by police and the owner and workers were arrested for possessing illegally harvested teak, which was proscribed in what has turned out to be a largely fruitless effort to preserve the forests. Everybody was trucked into Chiang Mai and impounded in the Children’s Court—the jail was in the basement— humiliating and frightening, despite the brevity. All the families from Ban Den were ordered to appear, the judge lecturing them in forthright language about the seriousness of breaking the King’s edict against destroying the forests. He finished with a passionate warning that a further offence would be punished more severely. The owners paid the fine and took the families to dinner where they apologized most humbly. Wood carving lost its allure.
The work wasn’t particularly hard, although accidents could happen. Each carver specialized in one type of work. Noom was a carver of leaves. Ying did the small houses in the backgrounds. Occasionally they worked on massive scenes carved in deep relief into huge sawn log slabs, but that was after they got past the apprentice stage. Most of
Ying and the others headed to Bangkok. Most of them returned in a very few weeks, Ying among the first. She had no intention of returning to Ban Den, however. She associated the village in her mind with being “dissed”, as an American slang expression has it, being disrespected, dishonored, distrusted, and disentitled. She did come to Ban Den
By Kenneth Dobson
Ying Teutawat has been called Ying, meaning missus, for as long as any Ban Den friend can remember. She refused to be a boy and at the age of four, rebelled at going to school until they let her dress in a girl’s uniform. This caused a crisis in the school and was handled to nobody’s satisfaction. After a year she was back in school where she skipped grades and finished elementary school a year ahead of her peers. She entered the labour pool along with Noom, Bonnie, Am, Suwit, Noi and others from Ban Den. They worked 30
The pay was a fraction of what the masseurs got at the shops specializing in “happy endings” or at the luxury spas that boasted all amenities. At the Traditional Medicine Hospital tips were optional, small and infrequent. Still, Ying had an acute business sense. She saved enough to pay for a new motorcycle. She would have resented paying interest on a loan. And she obtained a house fully paid for, although it was on a tiny lot in an undesirable neighbourhood. She did this by economizing and taking advantages where she could, as well as working long hours. Her off-hours appointments more than doubled her 31
pay in a month. She consistently loaned large portions of her savings to family members and colleagues, which were never repaid in full and rarely repaid at all. She never did have her surgery. While she still lived in the rented house, Suwit, Am and Noom moved back to Chiang Mai and took Ajarn Chuwit’s course, to get jobs at the hospital. They shared space in Ying’s house, along with a young married couple. It was tight, but the only trouble in four years was when a neighbour scaled the wall and robbed Ying’s savings out of her mattress. “Your mattress for god sake,” Suwit yelled at the distraught girl. “Why not just tape the money to the front gate?” Over the years Ying courted and wooed a string of men. None lasted long and the experience of rejection began to harden her. Noom and others who had known her over the years recognized the change and were alarmed. “Ying is just one of those women who can’t feel fulfilled without a man in her life to verify her,” Suwit surmised. “Dear,” Mack said to her one night, “you need to get out more if you’re going to find the love of your life.” She had a strong preference for muscular men in uniform. He took her, ignoring her reservations, to the “House of Male,” Chiang Mai’s answer to Babylon in Bangkok. “Will they let me in?” she worried. “Girl, you’ll be a hit. These guys are starved for your attractions,” Mack assured her. 32
Then there was the matter about swimming nude. “My willie is so tiny,” she protested. Mack just yanked her towel off and she promptly stepped into the enshrouding water. She did have a good time. And she did attract attention. And she did enjoy herself. But never went back. Muscular men in uniform, or any other sort of clothes, were in short supply at House of Male. Maybe on “buddy night” when the place was crowded she could have found a soldier. Many changes came to the Traditional Medicine Hospital after Ajarn Chuwit died and new owners took over. The old staff gradually left. When Noom and Mack went for massages and hot pack treatments on Mack’s sore leg in August a year ago, Ying was there as always, yet only one of the other old-timers was around to reminisce in hushed tones since management now fined staff for talking and excessive noise. It was not like the old days when Suwit and Am would even let a customer get naked, to then massage his third leg. Then Ying also moved on. “Will Ying come to the birthday Party?” Mack asked. “No,” Noom sighed. “She has taken a job in Pattaya and lives with her sister.” Next month: Damrong You can download the unabridged novel at www.out-in-thailand.com/shop

ACTING STRAIGHT Redgrave & Laughton By Brian Baxter
Any number of gay actors have tried the ‘marry –go- round’. Some jumped off quickly, like Rock Hudson; others such as Van Johnson lasted rather longer, until pushed when his wife found him in bed with a man. Sometimes it was – still is – a cover up but for others it can be the sort of convenient arrangement much beloved by Conservative politicians in the U.K. and no doubt elsewhere. Two famous actors, both enormously talented and at home on screen and stage, had very happy – if unconventional - marriages, despite being in the case of Michael Redgrave bi-sexual and in Charles Laughton’s circumstance being gay. They were both highly successful and the ‘trick’ seems to have been that their wives were comparably intelligent and talented – though somewhat in the shadow of the men. 34
Redgrave had the decency and foresight to tell his wife, Rachel Kempson, of his bi-sexuality before the actual marriage. Seemingly she thought she could cope and given the three offspring from the relationship (Vanessa, Corin and Lynn) and the fact that they remained married until Sir Michael’s death one can see that she was right. It may have been a strain at times, especially when his longer term lover moved into an apartment near the family home, becoming a regular visitor and kind of ‘uncle’ to the children. Redgrave was one of the four great knights among the actors of his generation (1918 – ‘85), along with Sir Laurence, Sir John and Sir Ralph: He was less flamboyant than Olivier, less ‘musical’ than Gielgud and less formidable than Richardson but in terms of talent equal to
any of them. He first appeared on screen in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes (1938) and made some 70 further movies including the terrifying ventriloquist episode from Dead of Night, the lead in a superb version of The Importance of Being Earnest and two memorable guest roles as the uncle in The Innocents (based on Turn of the Screw) and as the elderly Leo in The Go-Between. His two finest performances were as the remand school governor in The Loneliness of the Long distance Runner and heartbreakingly as the teacher in The Browning Version. On stage he had innumerable triumphs but had a habit of altering his performance when bored – to the bemusement and sometimes anger of his fellow actors. He was tall, severe, had a fine voice and was every bit the
actor without being ‘actorish’ - quite the opposite in many ways to Laughton, Charles Laughton married Elsa Lanchester when he was 30, in 1929 and their lives and careers ran in tandem until his early death in 1967. She never enjoyed his fame, although she was wonderful in (and as) The Bride of Frankenstein and many other films. Laughton came out to her quite early on and she offered him formidable support. He was lucky that her family background (staunchly socialist, enlightened and liberal) had given her an understanding of his predicament in an unsympathetic age. Laughton had a wonderful voice, great presence but none of Redgrave’s dashing good looks. In fact he was – and 35
OUT V ON T
knew it- short, fat and unattractive. His predilection for handsome young men was fulfilled with the aid of his substantial wallet. Luckily his talent as an actor on film and stage and on one marvellous occasion film director (The Night of the Hunter) gave him great satisfaction. His film roles most famously included that as Captain Bligh in The Mutiny on the Bounty as well as a raft of historical characters, Henry V111 (twice), King Herod, Nero, Quasimodo, plus many judges, lawyers and in his final film, Advise and Consent, an irascible, right wing Senator. He had a tendency to flamboyance, 36
even hamminess if the role was less than good (or the director). But this larger than life quality served wonderfully in such films as Hobson’s Choice and in the hands of a fine director like Robert Siodmak he was comparatively subdued as The Suspect, a brilliant thriller. He admitted to two great disappointments in life: the fact that he was unattractive and the commercial failure of his only film as director. In compensation he enjoyed huge success on stage in his one man shows and as director of plays such as The Caine Mutiny Court Martial and notched up 65 screen roles, many of them of real quality.
Meet the Robertsons, America’s favourite big, bearded, camo-clad family. Their home is the Louisiana bayou and their business is producing duck calls and decoys made from salvaged swamp wood. Duck Dynasty is the latest product to further devalue the History Channel’s (True Vision ch. 122) already dubious reputation for trashy tabloid telly. They look like unwashed ZZ Top clones; they live in the backwoods and have made a fortune by turning a backyard business into a multi-million dollar sporting empire. They are the Robertson family, rabid rednecks who shoot anything that moves near their West Monroe, Louisiana, home and who finish every show with a family meal, preceded by prayers of thanks and finished with the
sort of homespun wisdom that is neither homespun nor wise. The Robertson men, brothers Phil and Si, and Phil’s sons Jase, Willie, and Jep, are ignorant, misogynist and never easy on the eye. Their trophy wives nag and whine like the stereotypes they are and can only be there for the family fortune. We can only hope that this is the rock bottom that reality shows hit before reality hits the schedulers and the genre is cast into the annuls of TV history’s big mistakes. Watch one episode; that will be enough to reassure you that your way is the right way and that you have no genetic connection to the worst of human pond life. There is no doubt that the closest any of this ugly clan has ever come to culture is penicillin. 37
ASK KA DARI
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com Dear Darika, Same sex marriage is now legal in my home state of California. I have lived happily with a Thai partner in Chiang Mai for six years. We would like to make our union legal. But here is the problem. He has tried to get a visa to visit the U.S. twice and he was rejected twice. I am pretty sure that a third try will not be successful even though he is stable, educated and makes a decent living. Have you heard of a way to work around this?
and Santa Clara counties are permitting same sex weddings. Los Angeles is not. Since this column is written about three weeks before you read it, things can change. California law requires that the loving couple and the person who performs the ceremony all be in the same place at the same time so there is no way to get married by Skype. Four states in the U.S. (California, Colorado, Texas and Montana) permit “proxy” marriages if one of the couple cannot be there physically. Montana permits double proxies. California permits proxy marriages only when one of the parties is in the armed forces and stationed in a conflict zone. I seriously doubt that Colorado, Texas or Montana will allow same sex marriage in my lifetime.
Gentle Reader, I have had encounters with the mean spirited individuals behind the thick glass at the US embassy and wonder how they sleep at night. An employed Thai homosexual in a relationship is seen as a threat to the future well being of the free world.
I was surprised to learn both Mexico and Paraguay allow proxy marriages. The Paraguayan consulate in Tel Aviv performs same sex marriages that are recognized by Israeli law. Both the French and U.K. embassies in Hanoi perform same sex marriages between foreigners. Neither answered my email enquiry about whether they would offer the same service for a Thai and an American. Other countries allow same sex marriage including Canada, South Africa, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, New Zealand, Brazil and Argentina.
While the Supreme Court decided not to interfere with same sex marriages in California, Governor Jerry Brown (a life-long bachelor who planned to be a Catholic priest) has vowed to bring an end to all of these wedding bells. San Francisco
I am not sure why two guys would want to marry Thailand since there are no apparent legal benefits other than possibly getting a U.S. visa (and eventually a green card) for your spouse. Frankly, being married is way too much trouble and
38
Darika has vowed never to do it again… read the letter that follows. Dearest Darika, I read your advice every month online as I live in Europe. I work as cabin crew and fly to Thailand often. About five years ago I met a Thai guy who I liked very much. I spent time with him twice a month and soon we were in love. After about a year he got a Schengen visa and came to my country. It was a new and exciting place for him. After two months we were married and he was able to get permanent residency. In one more year he can become a citizen.
She is smart, clever and occasionally witty, eats my cooking without complaint, likes a martini on occasion and loves me unconditionally. I cannot say the same about any of the men I have been married to. Send him home for a month. He will not lose his residency and you will have some breathing space. The only condition should be that once he gets his citizenship the two of you will divorce with no financial strings. I am sorry your marriage was not a success. Even gay marriages can end in failure. Just look at moi.
Four years have passed and everything is different. He misses his family. He hates cold weather and speaking my language. He does not work because he is lazy and because I promised to “take care of” him, so he is bored. He has sex with others and when I am on trips I do also. He really wants to leave but he also wants the citizenship. I am unsure what can be done. I am unhappy. I feel unwelcome in my own home. He is expensive. I am not sure if you can give me advice. Maybe you can tell others to think carefully before they take some Thai boy away and marry him. For me it was a mistake. Gentle Reader, Falling in love is often too easy and I suspect many gay couples will jump into newly-legalized marriage without considering the potential consequences. Darika has a small dog named Mimi. 39
Pain: Natures’ Warning By Doc John
Pain in Lower Back or Between Shoulder Blades Often it’s arthritis, other causes include a heart attack or abdominal problems. One danger is aortic dissection presenting as either a nagging or sudden pain. Those at risk have conditions affecting the vessel wall, like high blood pressure, a history of circulation problems, smoking, and diabetes. Severe Abdominal Pain Still have your appendix? Then it could be ruptured, or gallbladder and pancreas problems, stomach ulcers, and intestinal blockages are other causes of abdominal pain that need attention. Calf Pain A deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot in the leg’s deep veins. Annually it affects millions and can be lethal because a piece of the clot could break loose and cause a clot in the lungs which could be fatal. Cancer, obesity, immobility, prolonged bed rest; long-distance travel and advanced age are common risk factors. Sometimes there’s just swelling without pain if you have calf swelling 40
and pain see a doctor immediately. Burning Feet or Legs Millions of diabetes sufferers are undiagnosed the only symptom may be burning or pins-and-needles in the feet or legs that may indicate nerve damage that you must get checked. Vague, Combined, or Unexplained Pains Painful, physical symptoms are common in depression like vague complaints of headaches, abdominal, or limb pain, sometimes combined. The pain might be chronic and not terribly debilitating. Depressed people and health care professionals might dismiss the symptoms. Furthermore, the more depressed you are, the more difficult to describe your feelings which can confuse the doctor. Other symptoms must be present before a diagnosis of depression can be made. Get help when you’ve lost interest in activities, you’re unable to work or think effectively, and you can’t get along with people. Depression is serious and must be treated early.

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/ Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom/Surawong are most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A* is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. Up2 Salon* will make you beautiful! Tarntawan Place Hotel* is at the centre of the action. Eat at Dick’s Cafe*, Telephone Pub* is always busy and night owls party at DJ Station*. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to 42
those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, Singapore Pub, See Men, Seek, Blue, and DoorDum. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-inthailand.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner

Jungle covered hills, secluded beaches - the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys. Recharge in spas; lounge around pool villas, beach walks, sip cocktails in a beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit. Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations but full of exotic surprises.

OUT in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North, renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations. Inside the moated, old city walls, find the inviting Yokka Dok* bar/restaurant. Just outside the wall is the excellent Miguels Mexican Restaurant. CU Bar and Secrets Bar are both near the night bazaar and are great local watering holes. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, an established Chiang Mai institution. Gemini Massage has regular promotions and is recommended. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have a hip and happening scene of bars. On Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Pern’s Restaurant with a marvellous Mediterranean menu to savour. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male*, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from
the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service, as well as Mansfield Residence* with its very own excellence and quality accommodation. See Man Pub* on the canal road is a late night choice. Radchada Garden Cafe* for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink with friends. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more go to The Blues Club and Sanctuary Spa is just inside the south west corner of the wall and is a one stop for facial, body and massage treatments. Just half an hour from the city centre towards Doi Saket is your unique romantic getaway, Soulmates Retreat and Flight of The Gibbon* is a thrilling adventure attraction. The Podology Centre* for one stop foot care. A couple of hours north of the city, try Saimoonbury Resort in Chaiprakarn- a slice of real Thailand. OUT in Phuket
P
Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna* and Adonis Guesthouse. Apsara Residence delights and The Backstage* now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms and the Dolphin Hotel is a landmark.. The disco at Boat Bar* is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike. 74
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. The recently refurbished Club One Seven* guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage* has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. minutes walk from Patong Beach. Stay at brand new and sparkling CC’s Hideaway, Phuket Gay Homestay with regualar pool parties and B-BQ’s close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction.
