OUTPOST
Your letters in print and online editor@out-in-thailand.com
Dear OUT in Thailand, I read with interest your reader’s letter complaining about the use of Nazi insignia as a fashion statement and could not agree more. The insensitivity is outrageous and is so offensive to many that it should be stopped immediately. Can you imagine what would happen in Europe or the US if swastikas were worn? Also, it is widely used by fascist neos in Russia- how would Russian visitors to Thailand feel about seeing it here; encouragement? I would also like to say how much I enjoy the magazine every month- keep up the great work. Best wishes, IK (Bangkok) Dear IK, many thanks for this. The debate continues…. JB Dear James, Your September issue was another winner. Thank you and well done. I particularly enjoyed the Elton John piece; what an inspiration that man is. I have been a fan for more than 40 years and never tire of his music. With thanks, GR (Capetown SA) Dear GR, very good to hear from a South African, make sure you get to Thailand soon! JB

OUT in the Pink Mango
Korean PR representatives have been involved in panic damage control exercises since KPop star Jo Kwon of teeny-bop band 2 AM was spotted getting down in a famous gay club in Bangkok last month. A spokesman said that the young star was simply, ‘enjoying Thailand’s famous cultural entertainment.’ Just imagine OUT iT readers saying, ‘Lets go and get some cultural entertainment!’ before heading out for a pink hotspot!

Speculation is rife that the proposed gay marriage legislation in Thailand could actually become a reality. You will remember in our November 2012 issue, we featured Natee Theerarojanapong who had been refused marriage to his long term boyfriend- it seems that the human rights issues this raised are being taken more and more seriously by the powers that be.
Noting Reuters affirmation that Thailand is the world’s number one gay destination, the anti-gay laws that prevail in neighbouring south east Asian countries and a growing awareness of the power of the pink banknote, gay marriage in Thailand would really boost the travel economy with hotels, wedding services, florists and a host of associated businesses benefiting.

In this interview with One Direction, the most successful boy band in the world, who got their first break by coming third in Britain’s, ‘The X Factor’, talent show, the boys talk
Even under the tutelage of Simon Cowell, global domination is still far from a walk in the park for five young teenage boys, thrown together on a whim. We’ll even bet the X Factor hitmaker is still pinching himself over the speed and rate of gargantuan success enjoyed by the One Direction fellows. Only two years ago, they were still hauling themselves up to Fountain Studios every Saturday night, performing whatever cover or artificial melange Cowell had plundered from the Top 40. Niall, Liam, Louis, Zayn and
foppy-haired Harry seem to gel on stage and the girls were certainly coming over all light-headed along with a more restrained following of gay boys. Now the fans, who then gathered outside Wembley Park, have multiplied by their hundreds into a lusting, blood-thirsty mob who turn homicidal on any poor soul romantically linked to the cutesy fivesome. And that’s when you know you’ve made it. One Direction are a modern day phenomenon, shifting three million copies of 13
debut album Up All Night, with their recent sophomore effort, Take Me Home, easily expected to do bigger business. The recent premier of a documentary feature film in London, stopped the traffic and nearly caused riots resembling Beatlemania. One Direction - This Is Us is behind the scenes movie by noted auteur Morgan Spurlock and presented in pin-sharp digital 3D. It’s thought

that One Direction: This Is Us will be the Don’t Look Back for the generation that’s had its attention span obliterated by Snapchat. They’re chased and adored by tweens around the globe and Thailand is among the throng with its own One Direction Facebook page; it’s a truly remarkable feat, and one that is largely difficult for the lads to even believe.
“We’re still a little bewildered by it all,” Liam Payne astutely sermons, his bandmates Niall Horan and Harry Styles nodding furiously in unison. “But I think a lot of it is to do with the age we’re in. With Twitter and all that stuff, that’s been a massive help for us. We’re under no impression that that wasn’t a big help to us. And also our fans have just been incredible. So, we’re really happy with the hard work they’ve put in and spread the word about us amazingly well. So we’re getting to do all these amazing things just because of them.” This reference to social media is a clue to the loyalty and size of the fanbase with band members more accessible than any other stars. The baby-faced megastars, who recently cleaned up at both the MTV Video and Europe Music Awards are reportedly worth over £40million combined; that’s enough for them to count their blessings that Simon Cowell’s stroke of constructive genius worked so well, considering they were all solo acts, carrying potentially damaging egos. “When we were put together we were lucky that there weren’t any standout egos that needed to be put aside,” Niall ever so wisely, explains. “We were very lucky that there wasn’t one person that all of us hated. You know, we all got on pretty much straight away. “When we were put together by Simon, we didn’t really know each other,” Harry tells. “I think I shared a room with Niall for one night [during the X Factor]. I hadn’t met Liam yet until the day we actually formally formed the 15
band. I’d spoken to Louis once – he was a completely different person then than the person I know him as now - and I spoke to Zayn once, although Zayn’s still pretty similar. So we didn’t really know each other at all. It was a crazy way to meet people you end up having such a close affinity to.” There have been plenty of gay rumours surrounding the guys, who have always steered well clear of confirmation. Liam adds: “It’s just so mad that we were put together on the spot there and still managed to produce what we have without friction creeping in. There weren’t that many arguments to start off with. And there hasn’t been an argument for - I’d say - I wouldn’t even know how long, but it is a really long time. I’d say a year.” With the debt album pulling in the numbers, there are fears and pressures surrounding this latest effort. “Oh, yeah,” Liam once again chimes in, clearly the spokesperson for the group. “Definitely, massive pressure. With the success of the first album we’re nervously anticipating how this one’s gonna go, but you know, we’re really happy with the work that we’ve done so far. Hopefully the fans will feel the same about it. It’s just a much more personal take on us. They can get to know us a little bit more. I think for the fans, that’s important. “I think you know, obviously - after the first album did so well, we never expected it to do that well,” Harry, the notorious ladies’ man of the fivesome, chips in. “So I think having got there, we feel this album has to go there and above... it’s all quite daunting really, but we’ll keep doing what we’re doing with smiles on our faces.”

Imagine a land all but untouched by the passage of time. A land of some 750,000 souls which had no television until 1999. A land whose King decided in 2005 that its future had to be democracy, and then abdicated so his son could lead the country in this new direction. A land where prosperity is measured not by Gross Domestic Product, but by Gross National Happiness, a revolutionary indicator that even the United Nations has now included as a measure of a country’s progress.

This is the Kingdom of Bhutan, a country which few have visited. Tourism was first encouraged only in 1974, when 287 intrepid travellers made the trip. By the late 1990s, the annual number had risen to 7,000. In 2010, as a mark of rapidly growing interest in the country, the total was almost 41,000. For those who do make the trip, the country offers aunique and extraordinary experience. Tours can be tailored to a specific number of days; so it is important to do some homework and decide where and for how long you want to visit. The minimum I recommend is five nights, allowing you to experience Thimphu, Punakha and Paro. If you have more time, add in a couple of days to visit the little hillside town of Trongsa to the east. But all travellers should knowthat Bhutan has a policy of encouraging “high-end” tourism. Those on tour packages pay a nightly fee of US$250 in the high season ¬– March to May and September to November – or $200 during the rest of the year. Travelling as an individual, there is a supplement of about $40 per night. Whilst that sounds expensive, do remember what it includes – all accommodation (a mix of hotels and nice guest-houses), all meals, all transportation with vehicle, driver and a full-time guide, all entrances to official buildings (of which you will see many) and all taxes. Clearly not for backpackers, but not unreasonable for what you get. Arriving by air, you descend through one of the most twisty, jaw-dropping approaches to any airport. Paro is situated 2,230 meters above sea level, and you spend part of your trip at this and higher 19
On my ten-day visit in 2008, the first two were spent in the capital Thimphu, now less than an hour’s drive from Paro airport. Oddly, the first thing I noticed were chillies drying in the sun. Like Thais, Bhutanese love spicey food (worry not: for tourists, the chilli content is kept to a minimum)! Wandering around Thimphu is similar to wandering around many Himalayan towns, although the architecture is understandably different. Out in the countrysideit is quite common to find large phallic symbols adorning the walls of houses! Indeed, near Punakha there is a small temple where the monk will bless couples with a giant penis – not his own, I hasten to add! The main sight in Thimphu is the Dzong to the north of the town. Each town has its own Dzong, a Bhutanese mix of monastery, temple and administrative centre. Each is different and each a “must see”. If you are here during a major Festival, you are in for a wonderful treat. Thousands turn up in traditional dress for a day of reveling with danc-
20
ing, marching bands, parades and the whole hoopla of a celebration. I spent part of the second day on my first trek – a short, gentleone. About 15 kms north of Thimphu past the Dzong, the road suddenly ends. A trail on one side of the mountain gets you to Tibet two days later; on the other, to India! But we went upwards to visit the lovely little monastery at Cheri Goemba. Thank goodness only 250 meters up, because I was huffing and puffing within five minutes. The next day, my guide and driver took me over the pass at Dochu La (3,140 meters) and all the way down to Punakha. At the confluence of two mountain streams, here sits one of the gems of Bhutan – the Punakha Dzong. Rising during the dawn mist, we were driving down to the river when the sun suddenly burst forth. The sight that greets you as you turn the bend towards the Dzong is pure picturepostcard material. Breathtaking!
From Punakha, I had a monstrously long 13-hour drive over two mountain passes to Bumthang, with only a short stop at the lovely Dzong at Trongsa. Bhutan’smountain roads are not for the faint-hearted and can be awesomely narrow with ravines to one side. But so far it’s the only way to travel!Frankly, despite several sights in the area and an interesting Dzong, I found Bumthang rather boring. It’s just not worth the long drives there and back. Much better, as I suggested, to stop at Trongsa and spent a night or two there. On the return, we drove over the mountains again to Wangdue near Punakha and yet another picturesque and fascinating Dzong. If you make that trip at the end of November, consider a short excursioninto the Probjikha Valley. Here is the glorious sight of rare blacknecked cranes arriving attheirwinter home. Then it was west past Thimphu to Paro for two nights and the highlight of any trip to Bhutan:
a visit tothe Tiger’s Nest. This tiny monastery literally hangs from a sheer cliff face 900 meters from the floor of the valley. To get thereyou must climb by zig-zagging 500 meters up to the monastery’s 3,300 meter elevation (and do start early before the ascent becomes very hot),. Thankfully, there’s a café about half way up (but no oxygen bottles)! Guide-books say the trek takes two hours. I took three! But I was thrilledto have actually made it, for it is spectacular. Next morning, it was back to the airport for the early Druk Air flight to Bangkok. Druk is a splendid airline and its pilots are amongst the few certified to make the treacherous approach into Paro. Try to get a window seat, for you may have a stunning view of the Himalayas, a fitting end to a visit to The Land of The Thunder Dragon. http://www.tourism.gov.bt/

A Little Bit ofVerdi and A Quite a Lot of Wagner! Musicologist Jai Pee celebrates the bicentenaries of the birth of these two composers, focusing more on Wagner and his strange personal life.
23
2013 is the bi-centenary of two of operas greatest composers, Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi. Both are icons of the operatic stage and this year many of their works are being performed in new productions worldwide. Strangely enough, despite their vastly different styles of composition, both men were extremely politically motivated and this is reflected in many of their works. At the time Verdi was writing, a new Italy was being formed under the inspiration of Garibaldi and Verdi used his works to express political ideals especially in his choruses – the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves and their pleas for freedom in Nabucco, or the joyful celebration of independence by minority mountain folk in the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore, for example. Verdi is often criticized by those who dislike his music for writing strings of ‘oom-pa-pa’ waltz-like arias – consider La Donna e Mobile, one of the world’s most popular tenor arias from Rigoletto as a good example among many others. Nevertheless, Verdi was a prolific writer and works like Aida and La Traviata are firm favorites with audiences worldwide. 24
Wagner was more subtle since he was his own librettist – many of his lines are full of loaded vocabulary. Wagner, it appears, got himself into trouble almost everywhere he went and he is now regarded as a somewhat ‘nasty’ man by many. His second opera Das Liebesverbot, was staged at Magdeburg in 1836, but closed before the second performance, leaving the composer in serious financial difficulties. His first marriage was a disaster ending in misery many years later. While having to flee from huge debts that the newly weds had amassed in Riga, where Wagner was the opera director, the couple took a stormy sea passage to London – this was later to become the inspiration for his opera Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman).
In 1842, Wagner moved to Dresden with his first wife, where Rienzi was staged to considerable success. Wagner lived in Dresden for the next six years, eventually being appointed the Royal Saxon Court Conductor. During this period, he wrote and staged Der fliegende Holländer and Tannhäuser, the first two of his three middle-period operas. The Wagner’s stay at Dresden was brought to an end by Wagner’s involvement in left-wing politics. After some great turmoil and rebellion, the Wagners had to flee again, first to Paris and then to Zürich. While in Zurich he wrote some notable essays one of which was highly anti-semitic, and that, coupled with later statements of an anti-Jewish nature, have led to the Israeli Government banning performances of his works in that country.
Wagner was homophobic but his homophobic remarks are totally contradicted by life events. Wagner was at ease in the company of openly gay friends whom he encouraged in many ways – these include even more curiously the gay Jewish member of Wagner’s inner circle, Hermann Levi, as well as Paul von Joukowsky and his Neapolitan lover, tenor Pepino, who were very publicly a couple. He even entrusted his son Siegfried to their company and later in life Siegfried was a self-declared bi-sexual. We do not know if Wagner had homosexual tendencies or even relationships, but a closer examination of some of his operas reveals the emergence of many more men as heroes than female heroines; also Hitler is reported to have said the following when the issue of homosexuality among the Brownshirts was raised: 25
“Why should I concern myself with the private lives of my followers!....I love Richard Wagner’s music -- must I shut my ears to it because he was a pederast? The whole thing’s absurd”. Wagner also encouraged the admiration and vast financial support of one young ardent follower, the hugely eccentric King Ludwig II of Bavaria who more than once rescued Wagner from financial difficulties after 1864. Many scholars think the King had more than a crush on the composer who certainly benefited from the alliance. Wagner rhapsodized about male-male love, had a series of males who were in love with him around, though seemingly never having same-sex sex. His need for pale pink satin and silk and rosewater perfume is definitely more than a clue. Insofar as he needed them to compose in, rather than getting sexually aroused by the feminine fabrics, garments, and scents, they do not qualify as “fetishes” in the full psychiatric sense. And his extravagant consumption of them was a scandal when correspondence with his milliner was published in 1877. Wagner actually died in a pink satin dressing gown, but did not appear in public with visible soft fabrics (as Goethe did). 26

Why should I concern myself with the private lives of my followers!....I love Richard Wagner’s music -- must I shut my ears to it because he was a pederast? The whole thing’s absurd.
Verdi and Wagner, who were the leaders of their respective schools of music, seemed to resent each other greatly. They never met. Verdi’s comments on Wagner and his music are few and hardly benevolent (“He invariably chooses, unnecessarily, the untrodden path, attempting to fly where a rational person would walk with better results”), but at least one of them is kind: upon learning of Wagner’s death, Verdi lamented, “Sad, sad, sad! A name that will leave a most powerful impression on the history of art.” Of Wagner’s comments on Verdi, only one is wellknown. After listening to Verdi’s Requiem, the German, prolific and eloquent in his comments on other composers, stated, “It would be best not to say anything.” Whatever your own personal likes or dislikes, a true music lover cannot fail to recognise the indelible impression that these two made on the world of music and more than that in the world of opera. Whatever their faults may have been, whatever their politics, this couple – so far apart musically – have brought immense spiritual pleasure to millions of music lovers around the world and their memory should be revered with dignity and love.
Ban Den Friends By Kenneth Dobson
Bonnie
in the larger communities and easier to reach rural areas. Each of the nine villages in the Nong Nok sub-district had a school up through grade 6. It meant that Bonnie went to school right down the road.
How Bonnie acquired her name, nobody in Ban Den village is sure. Mack believed some American came to the school where Bonnie’s mother was a student and taught them the song, “My bonnie lies over the ocean.” It’s worked out pretty well for her. It could have been bad seeing, she was born a boy, for the name Bonnie to those who know much about English, indicated a girl. It was either prophetic or providential. In those days, every village had a school. This had taken a massive effort by the Thai government and been accomplished
She was still presented as a boy and it was only when it came time for their class to take vows and wear orange robes for a month that Bonnie balked. Since there is nothing compulsory about boys entering the monastery when ten or eleven, nobody thought much about Bonnie not wanting to do it. In truth she was beginning to question her identity. She didn’t think of herself as a boy anymore, despite the brown shorts as school uniform instead of a blue skirt. Once through the sixth grade, however, she’d had enough. In those days most
28
children quit their formal education at that point. For a year she helped her mother sell noodles from a push-cart shop in the shade of a tamarind tree in front of their house. Then she heard of the group from the village who had found work in the umbrella village doing woodcarving. She begged to be allowed to join them. She was the youngest by a year or so, but good with sharp objects and steady with her hands. She specialized in carving flowers. The master carver decided on the design and drew the outline with a marking pen. When he’d roughed out the carving, all the long hours of tedious work were handled by others. Those who worked for years became proficient at all the standard elements of the pictures, including animals and people. When the police cracked down on the illegally cut teak, all the young people found other jobs. Bonnie tried working as a waitress but the work was too heavy. Then she worked as a masseuse. Finally she took a short course at a vocational school to learn how to cut hair and a second course about giving perms and dying hair, the mainstay of any barber. She got a job in a beauty shop in Chiang Mai and fell in love for the first time. Bonnie was a naïve young thing, despite being a bit older than the average to have a first lover. He was an army man based in the large cavalry unit between Chiang Mai and Mae Rong. He was as young as Bonnie yet behaved older. He told her he loved her and, of course, wanted to prove it. She had only the vaguest idea about what he meant, although knew enough not to be alarmed and
to know it involved genital intimacies. That, naturally, had her worried. She still had a prominent anatomical aspect that most girls do not possess. So she postponed the exposure of this fact for as long as possible. It seems her soldier had suspected the truth and was unfazed when their swords were unsheathed as the duelling began. Bonnie counts that as the end of her virginity. She was disappointed when he left her as soon as the fires of his own lust were quenched. He left without so much as a fond farewell. What hurt was not his abrupt departure, or even her abandonment without achieving the same shuddering peak he had obviously enjoyed. Bonnie missed the big romantic final scene, the one in which “her brave, happy soldier went off to his heroic destiny.” She would have preferred a long romantic interlude before the inevitable separation. Any romantic frame around their love making would have helped. Bonnie was a lover of being in love. She was more careful after that. She was planning for the long term, realizing that she should analyse a suitor’s capacity for commitment before allowing things to go very far. The trouble was that she had a fundamental weakness for solid young men with small round butts, good complexions, nice hair, and eagerness. Also, she had given up the whole idea of surgical augmentation or alterations. She had a narrower field of candidates to choose from. It turned out there was no shortage of libidinous males willing to experience the rarefied pleasures of sex with androgynous partners including “chicks 29
with dicks”, but those who shared Bonnie’s longing for a sustained relationship were more difficult to find. She only occasionally indulged in murky speculation about the extent that her personality rather than physiology was partly responsible for the way so many of her love affairs ended. Indeed, being the romance addict that she was, a fair number of the love affairs had been onesided all along. So, the years and the lovers came and went. Eventually it was time for Bonnie to face reality. When she did, she knew she wanted to be back home. Her parents were dead yet she had a sister with whom she was on good terms. Bonnie was entitled to claim enough of the family land to have a house there. What she built was a house and shop in one. With a hand painted sign out front and a stencil on the shop window, she announced in Thai and English, “Bonnie Beauty and Barber”. She was an entrepreneur. Living in Ban Den again, it was natural for her to find her role in the community. She immersed herself in the projects being undertaken by the Ban Den friends. She was on village committees. And had boyfriends. Yhey tended to be younger than her, although she maintained her standards. It both helped and interfered that she was the only barber in town and the best in any town nearby. She literally had hands on almost every eligible male and the ineligible ones as well. This potentially facilitated all
kinds of opportunities. But Bonnie was seldom diverted from her main goal, which was to obtain a spouse to love and care for. Once having become a fixture in the community, things settled down. Customers were customers. They were seldom perspective candidates for anything romantic, and Bonnie was a romantic. Today her identifying traits are betraying her. Male pattern baldness has set in and it is increasingly difficult to comb the hair she has left over the bald spots. She has begun to sag here and there, and it distresses her. She tries compensating by redoubling her use of feminine tones of voice, gestures and phrases of speech. But she has to dress ambiguously nowadays, and honestly looks best in jeans and a t-shirt, showing off her decidedly uncurvaceous torso. Bonnie, back in Ban Den, has more friends and better friends than ever. She has more activities and is more involved. She is also making more money. But she feels more alone, sleeps more often alone, and thinks more about growing old alone. Bonnie is slipping into katoey spinsterhood. Acting Straight
SAL MINEO By Brian Baxter
Last month I recounted the sorry end of actor Ramon Novarro and mentioned both director Pier Paolo Pasolini and theactor SalMineo who came to similarly untimely ends: the latter in his thirties courtesy of a ‘door step mugging’. This ended with him being stabbed to death by a young vagrant allegedly ‘only after money’ and who was arrested and jailed – serving 11 yearsfor the crime - some three years later. An element of controversy still surrounds the actual incident. When 16-year-old Sal Mineo landed the plum role of Plato in Rebel without a Cause he complemented the perfecttriangular relationship opposite Natalie Wood and James Dean. (It is one of Hollywood’s sadder tales that all three of them should end their days in outlandish circumstances: Mineo murdered, Dean in a freakish car accident and Wood in a drowning ‘incident’ that has never been satisfactorily explained). Given the year of the movie – 1955 – and Salvatore’s age, the maverick director Nicholas Ray was circumspect about the pretty three-way relationship. The subtlety works in the film’s favour.
31
In life, matters were also complicated for the teenager and Mineo later said, “If I’d understood then that a guy could be in love with another one it would have happened….but I didn’t realise that for a few more years, when it was too late for Jimmy and me. So we never became lovers, but we could have – just like that”. Mineo had acted for some years on stage and screen when Ray cast him as the confused Plato, who patently adores the rebellious Dean and identifies with Wood. The success of his performance (not to say his Italianate good looks) led toten featured roles within the next year or two, including Somebody Up There Likes Me opposite Paul Newman in a role inherited from James Dean. In 1956 Mineo played opposite his wouldbe lover in Giant – the last of the actor’s trio of films. Shortly after the long shoot, the bi-sexual Dean was killed driving his Porsche at high speed. Mineo continued working steadily with leads in Dino and as the great drummer in The Gene Krupa Story, not to mention Cole Porter’s Aladdin for television! He
32
took a key role in Cheyenne Autumn for John Ford and co-starred in Otto Preminger’s equally long and lumpen Exodus for – gaining a second Oscar nomination as best supporting actor. But, in his own words, the offers suddenly dried up: one day he was working full out and the next he was looking for work in television and gaining notoriety, posing nude for large and explicit paintings by Harold Stevenson. He decided to branch out and ambitiously and successfully both directed and starred as the rapist (his victim was the then young, blond and handsome Don Johnson) in Fortune in Men’s Eyes, a controversial autobiographical play about homosexuality in prison. The production enjoyed success in Los Angeles and New York where he directed it but did not co-star. Allegedly the writer who lived in Canada and who could not enter the USA in case of arrest heard that Mineo’sproduction was too graphic (with full frontal nudity – daring for the period) and refused him the screen rights. It was filmed by others with only modest success.
“
“
If I’d understood then that a guy could be in love with another one it would have happened
In 1976 Mineo had recently completed a couple of television shows and was attempting to re-invent acareer that had stalled despite earlier success and big earnings. Following rehearsals for a play, co-starring KeirDullea and scheduled to open in L.A., hewas returning home when approached by a young drifter asking for money. Mineo was robbed and stabbed to death. He was 37 years old.

Colin and Justin’s (Humiliating) Home Heist BBC Lifestyle (True Visions Ch 83) ‘Colin and Justin’s Home Heist’ is inflicting these two Mary queens of Scots on Asian viewers and while a married gay couple presenting a TV show is a healthy sign of the times, is it just a camp parade of well-worn, seventies stereotypes? Hidden cameras wait for the victim householders to go out so Colin and Justin ‘break in’ and discover just what a dire design disaster dwelling awaits their marvellous makeover ministrations. Victim’s possessions are then laid out in a public place and ridiculed by passers-by until victims just happen to pass by and are ambushed, amazed and astounded by the terrible twosome’s tireless tirade of horrendous Home Heist humiliation. Yes, if alliteration and clichés are your cup of tea, this is the place for you.

Back to the house, which is verbally and literally trashed before the hapless family are banished and the team invade to materialise the wacky plans that wacky C & J have envisaged. Manufactured tantrums, expected of such talented creatives, ensue and we have to endure the inferior defilers, sorry, the interior designers, drivel on about the sumptuousness of hideous wallpapers and the luxury of their garish colour schemes. Days and numerous camp, double entendres later the family are wheeled in for the big reveal: whoops are whooped, sighs are sighed, oohs are ahhed, hands are clasped over grateful mouths, tears are shed‌ you get the picture. Of course, the fact that these people have no good design taste means that they are oblivious to the mess that C & J have made of their home and another half hour of crap TV has been slung at the screen.
R THE O F T OU MONEY
The Effects of Inflation Inflation always gets a bad rap, but I never seem to be aware of it too much. Yes, my costs go up somewhat every year, but I still seem to be able to afford my standard of living with the salary I am paid every year. Can you explain to me then why I should be concerned about inflation, as everyone else seems to be? Thanks, Blake
Your income needs to increase in line with the inflation rate as time progresses. This is okay whilst you are working but in the future we will all eventually retire and then we need to have made provisions for this. If we have a fixed pension income and inflating expenses we will soon be in a perilous situation as the gap between them widens.
Dear Blake, You have raised a very pertinent question on a topic which none of us can avoid. In relatively simple terms, if we need say $50,000 per year to live on today and inflation is 4%, next year we will need $52,000 and the following year $54,080. This sounds reasonable but when you project forward for some time the results can be frightening. In 15 years our example means that you will need $91,015 per year and in 20 years it would be $111,129. This does not improve your standard of living but assumes you maintain it at the same level. 36
Forward planning to create provision for this is essential. Arriving at the right equation is almost impossible but you can start by seeing me for a chat on how we tackle the calculations and then make sure that your plans adjust for this eventuality. This will enable us to come up with the right plan for you. ASK KA DARI
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com Dear Darika, A little birdie told me you have lost a ton of weight- mine is out of control. My pants cannot be let out any farther and I am worried about my health. One contributing factor is that my partner is attracted to “XXL” guys and he encourages me to graze. So if the stories are true, how did you do it? Plump in Pattaya Precious Reader, Thank you for your email. Gossiping birds told the truth! I have lost 38kg (and 25cm around my waist) over the last 18 months. Seven more kg and I will treat myself to a new wardrobe.Since I first visited the Kingdom forty years ago, obesity has become a major health concern here. Look around and you see unhealthy food everywhere, from franchised fast food to what is sold on the street. While I have no statistics, I suspect that deaths from heart disease have increased steadily. My story began with a trip to a store 38
for lipstick last year. You may have noticed, Thai architects have not learned about handrails; to enter this store one must climb concrete stairs from the street. As I descended, new lipstick in hand, a handsome young man began to ascend. Our eyes met. He smiled. My foot paid no attention to where it should have been. I did a pirouette down two steps, I skipped the rest, and I did a belly-flop on the sidewalk. I had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. One fore-arm was bloody, the other bruised. I hurt practically every part of my body except, thank God, my face. One shoulder was dislocated and both knees permanently damaged. My orthopedic specialist said I would eventually have to replace both knees. Besides disliking both pain and hospitals, I am far too busy for such frivolity. To delay the inevitable as long as possible, his polite suggestion was that lose some weight. (In other words “You need to lose about 100 pounds, you lazy old cow.”) Prior to this I visited Yanhee hospital for an evaluation for a full face and neck lift. (Some pain is worth enduring.) I made a mental note they have a weight management clinic, so I decided to avail myself of their professional help. I was issued a three month supply of their proprietary weight loss pills that “decrease appetite and increase metabolism.” I went through something of a metamorphosis. I lost interest in the things I used to eat, like most red meat, a daily plate of pasta, anything deep-fried, dairy products (especially ice cream), sugary drinks, fast food, snack food, and even pizza. I have been on and off the pills in three month cycles without any negative side effects.
I eat fresh fruit with low-fat muesli every morning. I take my own lunch to work— usually a salad or lightly steamed vegetables with toasted nuts and a non-fat dressing. Dinner is usually just asnack. I occasionally allow myself to splurge, but I make up for it later. I still enjoy a bit of cheese and a lot of Bourbon.
Recently it has been suggested that Darika writes long, complicated answers to her readers. So here is Darika’s short answer: Move out now. There will never be a happy ending to your story. Love,
I am glad that you are prepared to come to terms with your weight problem, but listen up: Dieting is futile. Food is a drug to some of us and your weight could eventually kill you. If you want to lose weight and keep it off you need to make permanent lifestyle changes, and so does your partner. He may not understand that his fetish is killing you. If necessary, replace him. A personal trainer would be the perfect choice. Good luck, be courageous, and stay away from department stores with no hand rails. Pa Darika, Please help me. I am very unhappy and nobody I can talk to about this. I am a university student. I am poor so I must share the room with two other students. They do not know I am gay. They talk about sex with their girlfriends all the time. I told them I have a girlfriend in my village and this is a lie. We are all from Ubon. For Loy Krathong we will all go visit our families and they want to meetmy girlfriend? What shall I do? Also, I am in love with one of the boys. I think about him all the time. When we sleep he is so close to me I can touch him. How can I make him love me? 39
OUT OCʼS D E AT TH Bowel Cancer: Act to Save Your Life By Doc John Men over the age of 50 should have regular colonoscopies to check for colon cancer. In the UK for instance bowel cancer is among the top three killers of men over 50 years, but a simple examination and rapid intervention will prevent the cancer spreading and save lives. Symptoms • Bloody stools • Rectal bleeding • Change in bowel habits like diarrhea or constipation that last for three weeks or longer • Unexpected weight loss • Unusual fatigue Risk factors • Men over the age of 65 are most at risk • Family history of bowel cancer • A diet high in red and processed meat, • Smokers • Alcohol consumption over two units daily • Obesity • Sedentary life style • Certain diseases like colitis and Crohn’s disease Examination • The doctor will take a personal and family history • A digital rectal examination to discover any lumps in the rectum • Sigmoidoscopy to look further into the bowel • Colonoscopy to examine the length of the bowel
40
A colonoscopy is done by inserting a flexible fiber optic tube into the rectum, moving it to the end of the organ examining the entire length. Abnormalities like small lesions or polyps will be removed for further examination. A Sigmoidoscopy lasts an hour and you will be sedated throughout. Once recovered from the sedation you can go home. Treatment Like all cancers success depends on early diagnosis, the longer diagnosis and treatment is left the less successful the outcome. A number of methods are used in treating bowel cancer either alone or in combination • Surgery • Chemotherapy • Radiotherapy Early discovery is essential because early bowel cancer is nearly 100% curable but late stage discovery only has a 6% chance of cure.If you have not had a colonoscopy yet it is now time to take the plunge and possibly save your life.
OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/ Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom/Surawong are most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A* is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. Up2 Salon* will make you beautiful as will the RMS Clinic with a complete program of excellent treatments. Tarntawan Place Hotel* is at the centre of the action. Eat at Dick’s Cafe*, Telephone Pub* is always busy and night owls party at DJ Station*. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly 42
Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, Singapore Pub, See Men, Seek, Blue, and DoorDum. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! OUT in Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North, renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations. Inside the moated, old city walls, find the inviting Yokka Dok* bar/restaurant and the newly opened Paradise Massage. Just outside the wall is the excellent Miguels Mexican Restaurant. CU Bar and Secrets Bar are both near the night bazaar and are great local watering holes. Close to Narawat Bridge is the luxurious and peaceful River House Massage. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, an established Chiang Mai institution. Gemini Massage has regular promotions and is recommended. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have a hip and happening scene of bars. On Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Pern’s Restaurant with a marvellous Mediterranean menu to savour. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male*, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, 56
private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. See Man Pub* on the canal road is a late night choice. Radchada Garden Cafe* for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink with friends. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more go to The Blues Club and Sanctuary Spa is just inside the south west corner of the wall and is a one stop for facial, body and massage treatments. Just half an hour from the city centre towards Doi Saket is your unique romantic getaway, Soulmates Retreat and Flight of The Gibbon* is a thrilling adventure attraction. The Podology Centre* for one stop foot care. A couple of hours north of the city, try Saimoonbury Resort in Chaiprakarn- a slice of real Thailand. OUT in Phuket
P
huket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna* and Adonis Guesthouse. Apsara Residence delights and The Backstage* now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms and the Dolphin Hotel is a landmark.. The disco at Boat Bar* is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike.
74
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. The recently refurbished Club One Seven* guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage* has retained their old location for private parties (reservation only) minutes walk from Patong Beach. Stay at brand new and sparkling CC’s Hideaway, Phuket Gay Homestay with regualar pool parties and B-B-Q’s close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. Phuket Travel Company* are renowned. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com & gaypatong.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner
Sign up at Backstage Bar for roundtrip transfer to Saturday party.
