Happy Birthday

OUT in Thailand

As we see in 2012 and wonder how long those New Year’s resolutions will last, OUT in Thailand Magazine celebrates a happy first birthday with a look at our top stories in an eventful year. 2011: That Was The Year That Was.... Our very first issue in January 2011, was launched with a bang- every copy contained a free condom- and our cover story featured award winning Thai fashion designer, Tananan Willson. Despite a hectic life of work and numerous charitable commitments, Tananan, who has a long term partner with whom he has an adopted son, told OUT iT that, ‘Family comes first!’

10

Message from Tananan: Since we spoke to Tananan, he has been working full time as President of Lions Club and distributing blankets to hill tribe people. He sent his congratulations for OUT iT’s birthday adding, “1st anniversary? Should have a party! Big hugs!” As part of our Sex, Love and Life in the Provinces, feature, we met a gorgeous gay couple in Uttaradit. Klaus Dieter Spieckermann is 58 and came to Thailand from Germany where he was a professional sports journalist. Uttaradit is about five hours drive, north of Bangkok and has been Klaus’ home for more than 17 years. All that time he has spent with his Thai partner, Neung. “I came to Uttaradit because that is where all Neung’s family live,” says Klaus. Klaus and Neung run the hugely successful, New York Steakhouse in Uttaradit.

In February, we featured interior designer, Vincent Chye- he lives with his Canadian partner, splitting his time between Phuket and Bangkok. He has been working in the interior fabric business for more than two decades. This 47-year-old Singaporean is a fizzing ball of creative energy that has been generating chic interior designs for expatriate homes in Thailand and styling hotel interiors that are as breathtaking as they are individual. His laser beam eyes dart about, scanning everything, missing nothing, picking up every influence and spotting any design faux pas that come within his

range. However, to Vincent Chye this is second nature. He is always working but he would describe it as living. Vincent has businesses in Bangkok and Phuket and he’s just opened a new outlet, Designers Baan, in Chiang Mai. Message from Vincent: “Congratulations for Out iT’s 1st Birthday. Out Magazine is certainly making a mark in gay circles, your articles and features have indeed been very inspiring! Giving us a fresh new take on Thailand. Wishing Out Magazine many more years to come!”

11

March saw a major scoop for OUT iT with a WORLD EXCLUSIVE interview with gay Thai, Palme D’Or winning film director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It was his first ever interview with a gay magazine and he spoke candidly about his professional and private life: “When I told my mother I was gay, she was shocked for a few minutes, I guess. But she was happy that I was happy. She was actually more concerned about whether I could survive as a filmmaker!” He never thought about that survival in terms of his sexuality. “I haven’t thought about this. I don’t think my sexual orientation has dampened or has benefited my career,” he said. His award-winning movie was, ‘Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives.’

We also met a major mover and shaker on the Thai gay scene, Kittinun (Danny) Daramadhaj of The Rainbow Sky Association, which is dedicated to helping Thailand’s LGBT communities. Danny’s journey through life has led him down many paths. A lawyer, qualifying from Ramkhamhang University in just two years; he practiced general law and helped his grandmother in her real estate business, Danny is particularly proud of her because she was a cousin, a direct descendent, of King Rama IV. He is also owner of the Beach Group of gay businesses. 12

April saw the touching story of The Flower Power of Chailek Somyaana, a fab florist - in his own words… “I come from the small farming village of Hua Khuang in Chiang Mai- a special place to grow up, so very beautiful and all the people know one another and are very friendly. Soon, I was able to travel around Thailand and I experienced a new world. I met people from all over and living in the city, I made friends with gay people and I found my feelings for boys were sexual and exciting. Being gay is not usually discussed in Thai families. I’ve never spoken about it with mine but I think they know! I think there’s an unspoken understanding and that my family is simply respecting my privacy. I am very comfortable with who I am as an adult gay man.”

business just keeps getting better. I enjoy reading your magazine every month and I’m very happy and proud that I was part of the magazine. I hope your second year is an even bigger success!”

“I love flowers and always have. Since I was a little boy I enjoyed seeing and smelling flowers, holding them, working with them. I use flowers to express myself and describe my emotions. I’m happiest when I’m designing and I often lose track of time. It’s as though I’m in some completely different place.”

Message from Mike Worth: “PattayaHotmale website has gone from strength to strength since the article in April- we launched BangkokHotmale in August. Another change is that PattayaHotmale cafe now serves traditional Thai food at low prices. Our property listing service has proved so popular that we launched Rainbow Properties Pattaya. This brand new site is a one-stop shop for all accommodation. PattayaHotmale would like to wish James and his team at OUT magazine a very happy 1st birthday and we look forward to what the magazine has in store for us throughout 2012.” www. pattayahotmale.com www.bangkokhotmale.com www.rainbowpropertiespattaya.asia

Message from Chai: ““So much has happened to me since you wrote about me in March. There are so many changes and I see my dreams becoming more real every day. I think I’m a very lucky person because of what is happening. I launched my company’s website: www. csfloraldesign.com and I have done work for corporate and private clients-

Also in April, we featured Mike Worth and his handsome young Thai partner, Tonto, the guys behind the Pattaya Hotmale gay information centre and cafe in the Jomtien Complex. This progressive business has a cool sleek office and cafe. “Any gay visitor or expat can get information on hotels, restaurants, massage et al on our website but for a more personal service, we welcome people here for a chat and maybe a coffee and a sandwich,” smiles Mike who has now launched Bangkok Hotmale.

13

In May, a sumptuous photo spread, a hallmark of OUT iT’s quality, celebrated the work of J Paul Snow, operations manager for Centara Hotels and Resortsa chain of first class hotels throughout Thailand “The Centara Boutique Collection is as diverse as their guests. Paul explained, “Generally they are all small properties in locations that you may initially not think of for a vacation. They are all as different as each other- as distinctive as you and well away from the usual tourist traps.” Peace and quiet with total relaxation is high on the agenda for any stay at a Centara Boutique Collection property – you will not see water aerobics or noisy kids clubs! Gays are welcome and handsome Paul guarantees that a gay stay at any of his resorts will be memorable; “You will be treated respectfully and with integrity and enjoy a truly relaxing vacation.” He is optimistic about the future; “Thailand will remain the preferred destination for gay visitors. The warmth of Thai hospitality, inherent understanding and graciousness of the culture allows a lifestyle that is not judgmental towards all manner of things that make one person different than another – I feel confident that gay tourism will prosper and grow.” Message from Paul: “As Out In Thailand celebrates its Birthday, let’s pledge to work together to ensure Thailand remains the country that attracted us here in the first place – vibrant, exciting, tolerant, nonjudgmental, visually, mentally 14

and spiritually stimulating and thankfully - never boring! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to OUT in Thailand.” We also featured one of the oldest and largest gay businesses in Asia, Babylon Bangkok. To survive, thrive and prosper, any gay run establishment cannot simply rest on its laurels in the hope that its male only environment will alone bring hoards of guests. It is for this reason that Babylon Bed & Breakfast in Bangkok is committed to offering its guests not only a friendly, gay environment, but also a range of accommodations to suit every budget, notable for the high quality of its rooms, facilities, ambience and service.

The June cover story was ‘The One Winged Body” Filmmaker, artist and photographer, Galen Garwood and writer Peter Weltner forged a startlingly unusual creative collaboration that has resulted in a strikingly beautiful book: The One Winged Body. James Barnes met Galen at his home in the north of Thailand. He is a softly spoken man. His work is a softly spoken symphony of heart stopping images. He first visited Thailand as a student in 1969. He is modest about a career that has seen worldwide exhibitions of his work and drawn countless accolades and awards. He moved to Thailand in 1998. Galen and gay novelist Peter Weltner have been friends for 35 years- ever since Weltner purchased some Garwood original paintings. Galen sends an image to Peter who is then inspired to write the words. This apparently disjointed method produces a surprisingly cohesive combination that is a modern gay classic of pictures and prose, described by Galen as, “A weaving of the creative spirit.” The pictures were taken during a trip to Sicily and Crete, where, in a magical cave and posing for one of the shots, the model startled some unsuspecting tourists with his proud erection! The enigmatic title, ‘The One Winged Body’ serves as a mythological metaphor- being between heaven and earth.

Message from Galen: “I did have a very nice event that came through the article in OUT iT- meeting a very nice poet from NYC who read it; we have some plans of doing a book together- his Haiku’s and my abstract photographic imagery. Happy First Birthday to Out In Thailand celebrating a remarkable contribution to the world at large of the people and culture of Thailand, a land that glitters with diversity, tolerance and exotic creativity. Bravo! And may there be many more to come.” We took a lot of flak in June for our feature on Jim Lumsden. We stand by our story! It would be hard to find a guy on the Thai gay scene that has been more influential or about whom more words have been written. It is true that many of those words have been negative and have spawned a certain reputation, which has fed the gossipmongers more than a few tasty morsels. OUT iT decided to investigate and met Jim Lumsden in Pattaya’s Boyztown. The man we met was nothing like the character ground out by the rumour mills. He has since opened a sumptuous new resort in Pattaya, Baan Souy. Message from Jim: “Well done on your first year. Not an easy achievement in Thailand, but you did it. I wish you all the best.”

15

Sexy Sherwin Limon Abuel is the handsome hunk who won the coveted Mr Gay World Philippines crown in 2010, only to be dethroned by the organizers in a storm of controversy. He has put all that behind him now and has started a whole new life here in Thailand, launching his own exclusive line in designer swimwear. Bangkok based Sherwin, 35, was our July cover story. He grew up in the Philippines. Raised by his grandparents, he says, “We were not rich but we were very happy.” He was a self-starter at school and after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in merchandising, he

attended the Philippines Fashion Institute because of his love for clothes. “I always wanted to create my own brand.” And so Limon’s sexy swimwear was born.

Our August cover story was Nick Langat’s first book, InNoSense- A journey of love, is a hefty volume of poems and pictures that record a ten-year trip around the world and charts a love story that ends in death. However, it is a celebration of life and love, eternal. Nick spoke to James Barnes about the book and its heroes, Christian and Thaworn. Message from Nick Langat: “We are organizing an exhibition that will be held in the Sombat Permpoon Gallery from the 14th of March until 8th of April 2012: “InNoSense - a journey of love” by Nick Langat, Sombat Permpoon Gallery, 12 Sukhumvit Soi 1, Klongtoey Nua, Wattana, Bangkok. As for OUT iT’s birthday...we wish you and your team all the best and thank you for your excellent work! OUT iT fills a gap in Thailand’s media scene and we hope it will continue to do this for many years to come! All the best from Bangkok and best wishes.” We also featured Happy Place Bar, which celebrated a spectacular first year anniversary with a sensational Birthday Bash packing the gay go-go bar to a buzzing full house. Opened in June 2010, Happy Place has quickly become arguably the most dynamic and customer-driven go-go bar in Boyztown. Located in Soi 2, Pattayaland ] (See map at the back of this issue), it has built its reputation on listening to customers and rapidly introducing innovative new measures each month to appeal to local expats and visitors. 17

September’s cover story was sexy singer, Claudio, who won many fans during his residency at Café Royale in Pattaya’s Boyztown and in Bangkok, as half of the El Duo double act. He is now developing an army of international followers as he embarks upon a solo career. The good-looking 26-year-old songster spoke to James Barnes about his life and work. Message from Claudio: “I’m in Germany and feel so cold. Brand new experience for me. I have shows in Berlin, Cologne and Dusseldorf and some TV & Radio shows. All is so exiting and interesting. Congratulations on your first anniversary. I hope and wish you many years more and many more good stories about Thailand. Thailand is and was for many of us the home for many years. It’s always good to get the latest news online and in the print media. Thank you Out In Thailand.”

We also featured Lukas Habersaat, who runs Tarntawan Place Hotel, Dick’s Café Bangkok, Balls, The Sports Bar, Tarntawan Apartments and Dick’s Café Jomtien. He started his career in Switzerland as an apprentice chef and in April 1992, took over Tarntawan Place. Back then, it was a basic hotel, with very few amenities. Recently refurbished it remains THE choice hotel in Bangkok. The commitment and dedication of their International management team and fine Thai staff has become world-renowned. In their quest for total customer satisfaction, the emphasis remains on guaranteeing the comfort and atmosphere expected for a perfect stay. Situated in a quiet courtyard off Surawong Road, with ample parking, in the heart of Bangkok’s business and entertainment district, the Tarntawan Place is within walking distance of international banks, major companies and shopping centres. Bangkok’s best nightlife venues are just around the corner. Message from Lukas: “Congratulations for OUT iT’s first birthday!”

18

In October, we had a feature on photographer, West Philips... his pictures spoke a million words.... Since we ran his story, West is now pursuing fashion opportunities in Maimi, Florida. Message from West:”Happy Birthday, “Out in Thailand”! I congratulate you on an incredible first year and wish you all the very best for the future! Keep up the great work and I look forward to meeting you all when I return to Thailand!” We also met gay globetrotting TV star, Martyn Andrews who had some top travel tips: “Email yourself a scan of your

credit cards, passport numbers, emergency contacts and embassy number – hence wherever you are you will have a “virtual copy”. Always check in at the airport very late, ten minutes before the check in closes. You have far more chance of being upgraded if economy is full (you might be fast tracked through security too!) Make friends with local people while always thinking about security and safety. I’m very pro active when it comes to networking- meeting locals through websites can really change a holiday experience. Travelling the world is not a time to be shy!

19

Chaiwat Thongsaan (Tob), a national pin-up, sexy model, star of screens big and small; he is the face of Adam’s Love, a Thai Red Cross hiv/aids initiative for men who love men, graced our November cover. In a WORLD EXCLUSIVE interview, he spoke to OUT iT about his life and career. At just 22 years old, Tob has achieved more than most aspiring actors. His good looks and smouldering eyes, casual style and sheer screen presence have propelled him to the top of his profession. His groundbreaking role in Bangkok Love Story brought him international acclaim but he remains mild mannered and modest in classic Thai style.

Last month we celebrated the 80th Birthday of stately, Karen. At the age of 80, when most of us have taken off the wig and moisturized the makeup off our faces, to sit back to enjoy the fruits of our labours, Karen still performs. The sound of an overture makes her pulse quicken and there is a rush of blood when the M.C. announces, “And now the star of the show, the main reason for you being here, the one and only...Karen!” The

thunderous applause is addictive for this stately octogenarian; a frocked galleon that sails the stage to delight. Message from Karen: “Many congratulations on your 1st birthday-as we all know, you cannot be truly IN, if you are not truly OUT! As the song goes: Its not where you start , it;s where you finish--and you’re going to finish on top. Best wishes for now & the future.”

Don’t forget, if you missed any of these stories, you can get all our back issues by registering free at www.out-in-thailand.com And so to 2012! This year will see more great interviews, fab features and luscious photo spreads, so keep your monthly date with OUT iT Magazine. We wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous year. 21

Stopping the AIDS Epidemic in Its Tracks December 1st was World Aids Day- here is a message from Sir Elton John

Elton John AIDS Foundation World AIDS Day is a time for us to consider the state of the epidemic and the challenges we must overcome to achieve a world without AIDS. It’s a time to reflect on the fact that we ALL have a role to play in ending this disease. And one of the most important ways we can stop AIDS in its tracks is simply by fighting stigma and homophobia.

By Sir Elton John

28

This World AIDS Day nearly coincides with the 20th anniversary of the death of my dear friend, Freddie Mercury. If Freddie were alive today he would feel very much as I do. He’d be astonished by how far we’ve come in treating and preventing HIV/AIDS since the frightening and tragic early days of the epidemic. But he’d also be saddened and dismayed to see that rampant stigma and homophobia continue to drive this disease. The devastating impact of discrimination against gay people and people living with HIV are clearly reflected in the alarming incidence of HIV/AIDS in the gay community. In American cities, as many as one out of every five gay and bisexual men is HIV-positive, and half of those infected are unaware they have the disease. Indeed, HIV prevalence in our community is on par with some of the hardest hit regions of the developing world. Also, new HIV infections are actually on the rise among gay and bisexual men - the only risk group in America for which this is the case. Clearly, we must do more, MUCH more, to reduce the incidence of HIV among gay and bisexual men, and that work has to begin within our community. In the

early days of the AIDS epidemic, we rose up with our straight allies, claimed for ourselves equal rights and equal value as human beings, and demanded solutions for a health crisis that affected not just the gay community but every population across the globe. And it WORKED! HIV rates among gay men declined dramatically by the late 1980s, and we can be justifiably proud of our efforts then. But today’s statistics show that we have stalled in our drive against this disease. We’ve dropped our guard and become complacent, and in that void, AIDS is thriving in our community once again. Today, on World AIDS Day 2011, I’m ringing the alarm bell. We must WAKE UP! There are three immediate challenges before us, and we have to address them NOW! First, we must help our young people to combat the many negative messages our society still flings at gay people. We have to teach gay men to love and accept themselves, to value and protect their health and the health of others, and to join the campaign for our equal rights as human beings. We cannot be silent or invisible. 29

The old slogan “Silence = Death” is every bit as relevant today as it was in the 1980s. Homophobia can be neutralized by familiarity, experience, and compassion. Stigma can be eradicated by courage, pride, and unity. We can begin to end AIDS when we empower ourselves. Second, we must take responsibility for our own health and well-being. We must get tested and retested. Too many of us do not know our HIV status, and that MUST change. Third, we must not let our federal and state governments balance their budgets by cutting crucial funding for HIV prevention, treatment, and research. Reducing or eliminating HIV programming today will cost us much MORE money down the road. That’s because these investments pay for themselves in terms of infections prevented, health preserved, and lives saved. Earlier this year, the National Institutes of Health released a groundbreaking study demonstrating conclusively that people living with HIV who receive effective antiretroviral treatments are 96 percent LESS likely to pass the disease to their sexual partners. In other words, HIV treatment IS prevention. Therefore, we should be INCREASING funding for HIV treatment programs, not implementing cuts, as many states are doing today. We have all of the tools we need to stop this epidemic in its tracks. Working together, I believe my little son Zachary

and his generation can live to see a future without AIDS. But to get there, we have serious work to do. We must fight stigma, homophobia, and apathy. We must learn to love and value our lives and our health. We must be honest in our own relationships. We must get serious about the risky behaviours that have become commonplace once again in our community, and the negative messages that encourage this behaviour. We must acknowledge the dangerous substances that are known drivers of infection. We must demand health funding. But more than anything, we must educate and mobilize young people to join the fight not only AGAINST the AIDS epidemic, but also FOR health and acceptance and love. On this World AIDS Day, let us spread messages of tolerance and compassion that are so critical to ending AIDS.

Emerald Green on Blue @ Five Islands

By Seb Mendelson

Sometimes it takes a while for the good things of life to come through, like the process which gave Koh Samui its most exotic attraction starting over 300 million years ago. Then South East Asia was a massive underwater coral reef stretching from Australia to Thailand, exerting incredible tectonic pressures, rippling the coral plateau into giant ridges creating the Isthmus of Kra one of the world’s classic ‘land bridges’. Over time, the hard, brittle, porous limestone was sculpted by heavy Equatorial rains creating towering, bizarre, grotesque formations, jagged surfaces and honeycomb caverns before the sea rose around them. Slowly plant life took root, inviting insects and animals to give us the petite, alluring, romantic Five Islands along with the most expensive animal food consumed by humans today also one of the most heavily guarded places in Thailand.

32

The traditional inhabitants of these islands are Cave Swifts renowned for building edible saliva nests used to produce the unique gelatinous texture of the 400-year-old Chinese delicacy, Bird’s Nest soup. China and the USA are the largest importers of these nests where a bowl of the soup could cost US$ 30 or up to US$ 10,000 for a kilogram for ‘red nest’ the top of the range from Thailand’s Five Islands. Many claim there are health benefits, they would need too, from a bowl of lukewarm bird saliva: raised libido, improved voice, enhanced eye focus, could this be an elixir created for gay men? Perhaps not but what has been designed exclusively for gay men visiting Koh Samui is the ‘Emerald Green on Blue @ Five Islands’ day of indulgence. You know you deserve this: pick up from your hotel, a morning drive through lush Samui countryside to your personal Long Tail boat - the only one possessing the unique license to take you to the Five Islands - inhabited by Swifts and armed security guards who ward off poachers of the multimillion dollar nests within the caves. These lonely dwellers live in cliff clinging bamboo huts, believing spirits, demons and ghosts of hapless climb-

ers dwell within the caves. While only Thai Government licensed nest gatherers & guards are allowed on the islands you can be one of the privileged few to swim, snorkel, splash, skinny dip even, in the sparkling azure sea and cruise around the towering, craggy, mesmerizing islands. Back on shore for a shower and superb Thai massage and organic skin treatment by Emerald Green Mens Club gay Thai masseurs in a sea breeze beach Sala then a sumptuous 3 course lunch with chilled drinks in the famous, stylistic Five Islands Restaurant renowned for its Thai fusion/international cuisine prepared by exceptional Thai chefs. Stay on for a cocktail or three on the beach while the blazing sunset wraps around you before your chauffeur drives you home through the cool, tranquil, tropical landscape. For gay men only and proudly brought to you by a partnership between the Emerald Green Mens Club and The Five Islands Restaurant, Koh Samui, Thailand, available only through Emerald Green Mens Club. OUT on Song! UA C S A P N I JUST n d a il a o u t in th

OUT in Thailand has been setting new standards for gay publishing for a year now and to help celebrate the magazine’s first birthday issue, a song has been recorded and is now available on iTunes. The title of this happy track? OUT in Thailand, of course!

music words & & Barnes by Nash

Talent spotters scoured the country looking for the right voice and it was DK & Claudio (El Duo) who singled out Justin Pascua as the perfect choice. His real name is Julius Caesar Pascua and he says, “I’m 30 years old but I stopped at 25!” Justin was born in the Philippines, both his parents had died by the time he was four and he was raised by his grandmother. After two years at university, he dropped out and became a professional singer. “Talent runs in the family,” he smiles, “most of my aunts and uncles can carry notes. My mom used to be a lounge singer and when I was a kid, I used to sing in front of the electric fan and pretend I was on MTV!” 34

His musical heroes include Stevie Wonder, “His last name best describes him,” and Regine Velasquez, a Filipina diva, “We call her Asia’s songbird; she came from humble beginnings and rose to the top because of sheer vocal prowess and humility.” He enjoys listening to a wide range of musical styles, “It all depends on my mood, what pleases my ears and heart.” You can see Justin performing a set of R&B and hip-hop live at the Candyshop Hip-hop Bar in Walking Street, Pattaya. Justin loves his audience as much as they love him, “It’s important that you connect to whoever listens to you... their applause and smiles are enough to excite me whenever I am onstage.”

Justin, who is OUT to all his family and has a boyfriend, is proud to be the voice on the ‘OUT in Thailand’ single. “I love the song,” he enthuses, “It’s so catchy and has a really positive vibe. You can groove and dance with this song, with such flirty touches and it emphasizes Thailand as one of the best gay places in the world. I love how the magazine showcases Thailand›s vast beauty and the people in it.... it makes us aware of what is happening on the gay scene and is read online in nearly 100 countries around the world.”

The music and words were written by George Nash and OUT iT’s editor-inchief, James Barnes. “My Dad was a classically trained violinist and my Uncle a brilliant pianist,” says George who started playing solo piano in a local pub on Saturday nights when he was just 15. He spent 20 years on the road in various groups, worked in many recording studios, had album deals as a writer/pianist, and did all the live gigs going, including all the festivals in UK and Europe, plus 2 years in USA. “I was enjoying several pints of Guinness with Mister Barnes when I had the notion to write a song about the delights of living in Thailand. James came up with the title, and penned some lyrics. Upon sight of these, I felt inspired to create something atmospheric and something that musically captures the feel of gay life in Thailand. I’m more than happy with what we’ve created here, and it was a delight working with Justin, the vocalist. Hopefully the partnership of James, Justin and I will continue, and an album is a distinct possibility.” James Barnes is frothing with excitement about the single: “It was a real honour to work with a great song writing talent like George and we’ve come up with a real earworm! Once you’ve heard ‘OUT in Thailand’ a couple of times it really gets into your head. Justin sings beautifully and the whole project has been magical. From an idea born in beer, to a finished song, it has been one of the most satisfying creative experiences of my life.” Download the terrific new single, OUT in Thailand from iTunes 35

Part 6; Back to the USA

By Dodger

I arranged for Wan to be Thep’s jail sponsor during the next 3-1/2 months while I am in America. She gladly agreed to visit my boyfriend twice a week and provide him with spending money. I gave Wan enough to cover his expenses for the duration. I also arranged for a meeting between Wan and Thep’s parents to build a relationship between them. This happened two weeks before my departure and went very well. Thep’s parents and his younger sister Phot spent hours talking to Wan. On the last night, Wan invited us all to her home for dinner. The bond between Wan and Thep’s mother was evident which was exactly what I wanted. Thep will now be able to communicate with me and his family via Wan. I can call Wan every Sunday to keep abreast of how he’s doing and pass messages back and forth. Thep’s mom will do the same. 38

I learned how to acquire a bed and land for Thep. A bed, being a 3-inch mattress and land being a small section of space in the corner of the cellblock, which has an elevated step to sleep on, separate from the other inmates. The bed was the easy part. The land was the hard part because of the limited land available. We had to wait nearly 2 months for an inmate to be released who had land in order to secure it. Thep now has his bed and his land, as well as a second larger storage locker with a 3-1/2 month supply of basic things like soap, shampoo, tissue, coffee, noodles, and of course more cigarettes which can used inside for trading for additional food. Inmates are only allowed to spend 200 baht per day of their own money regardless of how much money they have in the prison bank. I deposited 24,000 baht in Thep’s account, which covers his 200

baht per day spending until my return. Between the money in the bank and the extra from Wan each week, Thep will have all he needs to last him until my return. His parents and other family members will also be visiting him once per month and will replenish his storage locker if needed. My last visit with Thep was the hardest of all. An event I will never forget as long as I live. I arrived at Nong Palai at 7:00 AM as always and spent the next two hours talking to Wan and her friends, receiving kind comments and well wishes- they all knew this was my last day and understood the emotions that were running through me. At 8:30 sharp, the loud speaker started crackling, signaling

the beginning of the visits. As always, I sat intently waiting for Thep’s name to be announced so I could enter the visitors section. But his name was not mentioned in the roll call. This was extremely rare because I was always one of the first visitors to arrive, which secured me a position in the first visitor time slot. For a minute, I thought I forgot to hand my request form into the office, and then remembered doing this and thought there just must be some kind of mistake. I could not imagine what happened next. OUT iT dishes out the gongs for small screen offerings of 2011

And the award goes to... Most Inappropriate Use of Screen Testosterone: American Chopper is appalling, trailer-trash television travesty features some of the ugliest and toe curlingly embarrassing scenes ever screened. Obnoxious boss Paul Teutul Snr and son Paul Teutul Jnr., both hideous individuals, are happy to show the world just how dysfunctional and unpleasant a father son relationship can get. Best Loved Scenes of Love between Straight Men: Boston Legal, an elegy celebrating something noble, the friendship between men. Denny and Alan love to be pink flamingos. Politically poles apart. Socially separated and at total philosophical odds. Yet they enjoy a singularly male bond of friendship that should be cherished and nurtured by guys everywhere. They shared a cigar and whiskey at the close of every episode and put their world to rights. They had sleepovers. They told each other, ‘I love you.’ They even got married in the last show- to each other. Best of the Worst Talent Show: American Idol, never mind that Blue Meanie Simon Cowell has gone, it’s a jolly circus and a rare chance to enjoy some great live music on the boob tube- a treat that is sadly lacking on the schedules. It’s a slick 40

circus too with Mr Lythgoe as backstage ringmaster, no cents are spared to make the screen shimmer with classy images and Ken Warwick (fellow Brit, executive producer and director) knows his trade well. Most Irritating Brit: Piers Morgan Tonight: ’nuff said. Most Pointless TV Channel: The History Channel, a raft of quasi documentaries and reality shows have been introduced into History’s easy to follow schedule where, four hours of programmes are shown six times daily- proving that History does indeed repeat itself. Best Name for A TV Presenter: Bear Grylls, see Bear on Discovery’s, ‘Worst Case Scenarios’. Special Lifetime Achievement Award for Foul Language: Gordon Ramsey, the man who put the ‘F’ in food. Talk Show Host Who Should Not Talk: Jay Leno, please shut up. Most Expensive, Pointless Waste of Screen Time: The Kennedy’s and Downton Abbey have to share this one- 6 months on the shelf go to them both.

Rapid Ways to a Youthful You A New Face for the New Year!

By Doc John

Who doesn’t want younger looking skin? Here are three one-hour treatments that really work. - Photo-rejuvenation - Thermage - Microdermabrasion Photo-rejuvenation and thermage stimulates collagen production giving elasticity to the skin. Photo-rejuvenation fires an intense flash of light that penetrates the superficial skin layers stimulating the production of collagen, giving your face, neck, hands a younger look. It also removes - Age spots and spider veins - Lessens skin redness and uneven pigmentation - Reverses the damage caused by exposure to the sun - Destroys unwanted hair

With Microdermabrasion, fine powder is brushed onto the skin, which when removed lifts the skin’s superficial layers stimulating the growth of new skin improving texture and appearance, it eliminates acne scars (and other scaring), stretch marks, enlarged pores so reviving dull, ageing skin. After the procedure your skin will be brighter. For all these treatments best results are achieved between 40 to 50-years-ofage. But people in the early fifties may also benefit from the treatments. So guys cast aside your manly reservations and trot off to the nearest clinic for a painless quickie face lift your teerak will swoon over.

Thermage uses high frequency radio waves to heat the deeper skin layers increasing the production of collagen and enhancing the skin’s elasticity, smoothing out wrinkles and restoring a youthful appearance. On the forehead it raises the eyebrows making the eyes appear more open and alert. Around the jaw line it reduces the appearance of the jowls. 41

12 of the Best: Part 2

by Brian Baxter

The second in this short series, celebrating a dozen of the greatest film directors, with a choice of one of their movies and a ‘bonus’ classic with part three.

Carl Th. Dreyer: Denmark 1889 -1968 Scandinavia’s finest director made too few features in his later years, despite huge success with Mikael (a milestone in gay cinema) and other silent films including, Vampyr and The Passion of Joan of Arc. He found little work in Denmark and filmed in Germany and Sweden and made many sponsored shorts in his homeland as well as working as a journalist and later as controller of the huge Dagmar Cinema in Copenhagen. Dreyer refused compromise and returned to favour with The Day of Wrath – a devastating portrait of a witch hunt in medieval times. In 1955 he made Ordet (The Word), an austere and beautiful film about a seemingly simple man who believes he is Christ and performs a miracle – returning a mother to life. His final ‘autumnal’ masterpiece, Gertrud, premiered in 1964 in Paris to a confused response. Choice: Gertrud, a work that defies criticism. A serene study of amour fou, which 42

exists gracefully -like a majestic sailing ship in a world dominated by noisy speedboats. John Ford: U.S.A. 1895-1973 Ford was a prolific movie maker, churning out some 40 films before achieving world fame in the 1930s, mainly with westerns (Stagecoach) and classic dramas (The Grapes of Wrath) and wonderful movies such as Young Mr. Lincoln. After war service he enjoyed acclaim with My Darling Clementine, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Searchers among many, confirming John Wayne as the leading Hollywood star and working with James Stewart, Henry Fonda and others. He enjoyed broad comedy and action and used faces and landscapes with equal panache. He was irascible, kind and a heavy drinker and disliked critics, interviews and delay. He flourished in a no-nonsense environment, from a long past industry. Choice: One of half a dozen possibilities, the portrait of Lincoln, when an aspiring politician, is a fitting choice.

Michael Haneke: Germany 1942 – Whatever your take on Haneke’s extraordinary output (23 movies from documentaries until the breakthrough features of Party Games and Hidden) there is no denying his genius as a filmmaker. Noone working currently can lay claim to being a more accomplished, awesomely talented writer, director and editor. His masters are Bresson and Hitchcock but his unrelenting view of humanity at its darkest is all his own. He is a harsh illusionist who knows that great film-makers are magicians. Choice: Several contenders but it must be The White Ribbon (2009) – arguably the best film of the past decade. Hopefully, his new work Amour (Love), scheduled for 2012, is its equal. Howard Hawks: U.S.A. 1896- 1977. Surely America’s greatest home-grown director. Hawks was a genre film makerwesterns, thrillers, comedies, adventure movies and even a musical, who up-ended all those genres. He was as old as cinema itself and part of his genius was in

surrounding himself with actors, writers and technicians of the highest calibre. His Girl Friday, Rio Bravo, The Big Sleep, Monkey Business and a dozen more are sublime. Choice: Scarface (1933) – Muni as the power crazy, incestuous mobster in Hawk’s first masterpiece, before which all directors of gangster movies must bow. Alfred Hitchcock: G.B. 1899-1980. England’s greatest director left for the U.S.A. around 1940 and a later career which surpassed the excitement and charm of gems such as The Lady Vanishes and The 39 Steps. He compounded his obsessions – fear, betrayal, religion, sex, power, guilt within thrillers such as The Birds, Marnie and the Cary Grant films such as To Catch a Thief. He became a showman and the last films are stodgy, but the best are incomparable. Choice: What else but Psycho? The bleakest, most characterful and frightening of his 50 movies.

Ask Darika Dear JP,

Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com Dear Darika, Now in my early sixties I have a peculiar physical ailment. I drink quite a lot of water during the day and always have. Over the last six months, I have been waking five or six times during the night to urinate. This constant interruption of my sleep is causing fatigue and sleepiness during the day. The worst part, however, is that I am afraid to have overnight guests. I have been dating several nice guys who are used to spending the night cuddling with me, which I quite enjoy. I am so embarrassed by all of this pissing all night that I don’t dare invite them. They are all showing signs of being very put off, and think that I am no longer interested in them. What is your advice? Best wishes, JP. 44

First of all, Darika is not a doctor although I did play one on TV. Therefore, I cannot give you medical advice. I can say, however, that you have “nocturia,” which is not uncommon among males your age. There are numerous possible causes including diabetes, alcohol abuse, excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages, congestive heart failure, an infection, prostate problems, and other reasons. The first thing you should do is see an urologist to make sure you do not have a physical problem, then a nephrologist (kidney specialist), who will probably make you pee in a cup and give a blood sample. (Drink plenty of water before you go so that you are able to make the first donation properly if you normally do not “go” often during the day.) Chances are you can be treated with a simple medication and/or lifestyle changes. As for the other important aspect of your dilemma, simply tell your boys that you are having problems sleeping and that you do not want to allow them to stay the night because they will be disturbed by your restlessness. Do, however, make time to do other things they will enjoy including movies, dinners and a roll in the hay followed by a free taxi ride home. Love Darika.

Dear Darika,

Dear Admirer,

My best friend is a girl who works in my office. We have a lot of fun together and she does not mind that I am gay. She has an older brother who has been studying in Germany but recently returned to Thailand. She has mentioned several times that she believes her brother is gay but they do not talk about this story together. She offered me 5,000 baht if I can “prove that he is gay. He is very handsome and I could use 5,000 baht. However, something about this makes me feel dangerous. What do you think?

Of course, there is a remote possibility that you would end up with both a handsome boyfriend and a pocket full of money. However, it is more likely that you will embarrass yourself, that your friend will lose the respect of her brother, and that you will lose your best friend. Is all that worth only 5,000 baht? Darling, you would have to be completely out of your mind to accept such an offer. You should ask for 10,000 and find yourself a new best friend. Love Darika.

Love from an admirer.

OUT in Koh Samui J

Jungle covered craggy hills, roads weaving through lush coconut plantations, huge trees, orchids, butterflies, quiet beaches, fresh local fruits. Koh Samui is the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys, especially couples who kick back, recharge in spas or health resorts, lounge around their villa pool, take long beach walks, sip a cocktail or three in a rustic beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit with the local guys.

Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening with gay bars, disco, cabaret, island tours and as the regional spa capital, massage and body treatments. The center of gay day/nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end opposite Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club a well-established gay only spa for a range of quality massage techniques and treatments. Mekkala Men Spa promise to rejuvenate you and Rainbow Scuba & Tour for a paradise island adventure. Tropical Garden Lounge Resort and Fisherman’s Village are favourites. In south Chaweng, Tropical Fah Samui for massage and wellness treatments and opposite the Centara Resort is Boy Zone a smart gay bar with a nightly dance show at 11.30 pm and take 58

away staff. Further out of Chaweng in Cheong Mon, close to Sala Samui is Saiwon Mens Spa men only massage and body treatments. From midnight to 2 pm Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul disco/bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music and mixed crowds. On Lamai Beach, close to Grandfather and Grandmother Rock, is The Dinky Rock hotel, bar and massage. The Five Islands Restaurant is a favourite. For an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at gay venues or ask your hotel for a copy. OUT in Chiang Mai Try the superb La Fourchette (french), Chez Marco (mediterranean) and Prego (Italian & Thai) restaurants inside the moated, old city walls and the inviting Yokka Dok bar/restaurant/. Mandalay Disco is a favourite with night owls. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Circle Pub has hunky guys on stage and The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s gem with famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Gemini Massage and Marn Mai Chai Kha Massage have regular promotions and are recommended. Ram Coffee & Bar is set on the river, close to the Nawarat Bridge. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars. Check out Sangdee Gallery & Cafe and on Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Soho Bar and Guesthouse who serve incomparable New Orleans food. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local 64

university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Club M Karaoke is a favourite. Santitham is not far away, with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops. ZII Condom is the place to go for condoms, lube and more. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more, The Blues Club, Mystic Orient and 5 on Changmoi are all worthy of a visit or three! XS & JK Solutions is your one stop solution for all national and local real estate and legal issues. Independent Travel provides a trusted, price-integrated service. In San Sai you will find The Podology Centre, specialists in medical foot care. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings, www.radchada.com and www.out-in-thailand.com

OUT in Phuket P

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms. Knud’s BarThai’s Best Boys and the disco at Boat Bar are favourites.

Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Phuket Travel Company, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. Aspara Residence has modern Thai style rooms. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. CC Bloom’s Hotel is close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com 73

OUT in Pattaya P

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets.

In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. Pattaya Hotmale is your one-stop info and cafe centre. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Spilia Karaoke at Ganymede Hotel & Sauna is worth a visit. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the very popular Sansuk Sauna & Guesthouse and the newly opened, luxurious, Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. 82

In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar is popular and Eros Boy Bar and Happy Boys Bar are both friendly venues. Getaway to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach- very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd at weekends and stay at Silver Sand Resort- www.silversandsamed. com.
