Mond Zooms In By James Barnes Photographs courtesy of Nuttaphong Kittivoraphongkij

Naparuj Kaendi, “Call me Mond!” has an easy manner. His chocolate brown eyes smile and his fine black hair is nonchalantly styled into a soft, appealing crown. His slim frame gracefully slips into a chair on the terrace of his luxury hotel suite, lapped by calming waters upon which, water lilies bob lazily on the waves caused by a small fountain. He offers iced water and proffers a fruit bowl laden with tropical delight. He has taken a few days off from his hectic life as a model agent at one of Bangkok’s newest agencies.

Mond is an attractive 25 year-old, born in Surin, he has come a long way. His English is faultless and his fashionable clothes are casual chic. “I came to Bangkok to apply for a course in fashion design at university. There were only 16 places available and 3,000 applicants. I was so lucky to be accepted- there were only two of us from outside Bangkok who got in.” His eyes glitter with delight as he recalls, “I was jumping like a monkey, so happy that I cried all the way home.”

University life was not easy for him and he found that Bangkokians had a, “prejudiced, city mentality.” By the time he had completed 3 years of study, he had decided that he was not cut out to be a designer and started to work on magazine photo shoots as a stylist. 9

He was soon head stylist for Lips magazine, working with Nat Prakorbsuntisuk, possibly the most famous photographer in Thailand. This led to a job, as a model agent for the Russian owned Zoom Models in Bangkok. “Everyone at Zoom is so happy and passionate about their work,” he enthuses. The agency has a dozen or so beautiful female models and a few freelance males. Mond looks after the talent and the clients but says that the male models are more difficult to supervise. “The guys are more trouble,” he laughs. “They party too much! There are a lot of dramas- I have even had to get up at 3 am to bail one them out from a police station.” He is sure to continue his success. “I am 10

serious and attentive and I love solving problems. I am a high energy guy!” Mond does not get home to Surin as often as he would like. Graceful gesticulation is part of his conversation, pianists fingers describe every syllable: “All my family know that I am gay though I never had to tell them- they just knew.” His father found it difficult to accept at first but it is ok now. “A couple of years ago, for the first time, I took a boyfriend home and he and Dad became firm friends,” he smiles brightly, “I am a lucky guy.” At the moment, Mond describes himself as, “very single- I’m back on the market! But I will take it slow and wait for love.” Urbane and talented, that wait will not be a long one.

Asian Pop Invasion

By Mark Reynolds

Pop star LaLa is embracing her Asian culture. She is blending eastern and western traditions that speak to an entirely new generation of dance music fans. “I incorporate Asian motifs into my music,” she says. “I’m inspired by drums in Indian culture, and their jewellery and veils. I would love to find a way to meld them into my performances. Who knows how audiences will react,” she laughs, “they will just have to get used to it.”

Launching a career as a pop star today is difficult for any singer. But making it big as an Asian artist has historically presented its own challenges. Until now. An Asian invasion is hitting gay dance clubs, led by LaLa and other talented artists. “My introduction to music was through Bollywood,” explains LALA who was born in Hong Kong from Chinese parents and raised in Canada. “Even though my home life stuck close to our Chinese roots, I found myself drawn to East Indian traditions.” As a young singer, she experimented and exposed herself to all types of music. “In my teen years, I was deeply entrenched in hip-hop.” She crafted lyrical Hip Hop rhymes that spoke to her culture and Asian influence. “But people saw 14

it as cultural music and I wanted to be more mainstream.” Feeling she would never find true acceptance in Hip Hop, she explored other genres. “I was drawn to dance music because I love to perform and the reaction from the crowds in clubs is instantaneous.” She hooked up with the remix/production team Maniacalm on the single “Never Forget You”, a song that would become her first Billboard charting hit. The single caught fire in dance clubs and on radio, rising to #5 on the Dance Radio Airplay charts. LALA and Maniacalm quickly followed it with the sonically stirring “I Miss You” (co-written by LALA) and their latest track releasing to clubs this winter, “Don’t You Want Me”.

“I am so grateful for the gay clubs,” says the openly bi-sexual artist. “They were the first to really get me and understand my desire to be loved for my differences. When I’m on stage in front of my gay boys and girls, I feed off their positive vibe. I swear I would shower in it if I could.” It’s a sentiment shared by punk music valley doll Josie Cotton. Cotton crashed onto the world stage in the early eighties with the song, “Johnny, Are You Queer?” When it catapulted on to the airwaves, it sparked a meteoric rise in fame for Cotton that quickly went down in flames. “Johnny” was the first time the word ‘queer’ appeared in a Top 40 song and no one knew how to take it. “It was hilarious to me at the time,” reflects Cotton. “I was lambasted by the religious right but I considered it a badge of honor. What I didn’t expect was the backlash from the gay community.” The Advocate, the most popular LGBT magazine at the time, labeled Josie Cotton homophobic. New York’s alternative weekly, The Village Voice, asked on its front-page headline, ‘Josie, Are You a Bitch?’ “America is a much different place today,” she says, crediting the change to media and shows like Modern Family and Glee. In fact, “Johnny, Are You Queer?” was featured on Glee last season. “I love that we live in a world where girls don’t only have to worry about ‘the other woman’. Today, girls also have to watch out for ‘the other man’.” Since Johnny, Cotton has released several hit records including Convertible Music, Invasion of the B Girls and the critically acclaimed, Movie Disaster Music. But it’s her new song, the Asian inspired

“See the New Hong Kong”, that is her first since Johnny to hit the top ten on the Billboard club charts. The record mixes bubbly top 40 and Japanese new wave into an exploding post punk cocktail. “Maybe it’s good Asian fortune or maybe it’s that America is finally broadening its view on world music,” she says. “The Brits invaded America in the 70s. Latino beats were all the rage in the late nineties. “It’s about time we saw an Asian Invasion on the dance floor,” says Cotton. “Get ready because it’s already happening.” For more of LALA visit her online at www. lalathemusicartist.com. Her singles “I Miss You” and “Never Forget You” are available on i-Tunes now. For more information on Josie Cotton and her new album, Pussycat Babylon, visit www. josiecotton.com. 15

GETTING PERSONAL

By Michael White

Samuel Butler, the Victorian writer (The Way of All Flesh) who penned those words might have been right. Oddly, though, in ‘polite’ society they are the very things about which one does not ask a man. Just imagine asking a. how big is it? b. what’s your income and c. are you a born again Christian or was it just the way your mother put your knickers on?

Still, some guys are not that shy and had enquiring minds. Take Little Richard in 1987 (Spin) who said, ‘If there was anything I liked better than a big penis, it was a bigger one’. The topic was discussed in Out’s first issue and whilst I didn’t agree one hundred per cent with the writer’s thesis, anymore than with Little Dick’s, let’s agree that size is in the eye (and elsewhere?) of the beholder. I recall a slender Thai’s opening word once he had undressed and turned round; it was simply, ‘SURPRISE!’. And truly I was. Pleasantly. But to have enquired beforehand would have spoilt the novelty, so let’s not get too personal. 16

And as for money… In England, at least, it is equally not done to ask about the thickness of a wallet. And since the rich are born liars and the poor have nothing to hide, it’s pointless anyway. Writer Kathleen Mansfield may have said it best: ‘I must say I hate money, but it’s the lack of it I hate most’. Her comment was echoed by a lesser author, that high priest(ess) of queerdom Somerset Maughm who noted in his novel Of Human Bondage, ‘Money is like a sixth sense, without which you cannot make a complete use of the other five’. Let’s all agree with the sentiments of Cabaret, ‘Money makes the world go round’, but leave discussion to other people.

And as for someone’s religion….Not having one myself. I don’t care a fig for another’s beliefs. Just so long as they don’t try to prove the impossible, don’t preach and confine any missionary pursuits to the bedroom. Those of a sexual persuasion that is ‘different’ and who seek comfort in religion might do well to remember some words by the inimitable Joe Orton (in his last play I think): ‘How shocking! His abnormal condition has driven him to seek refuge in religion.

Always the last ditch stand of a man on the brink of disaster’. Just settle on recalling that all men are equal, at least under the skin. We all bleed red blood, never blue. The closet queen and wonderful critic and writer E.M. Forster summed it up best in a rare moment of humour: ‘All men are equal – all men, that is to say, who possess an umbrella’. 17

OUT Profile: Steve Goldenboy The Model Russian

Goldenboy is his professional name, Steve to his friends, this young Russian blond bombshell has set up home in Pattaya and spoke candidly to James Barnes about his life, loves and his feelings about his fellow countrymen. Goldenboy flashes his white teeth as he laughs when asked his age, “That’s not a polite question!” He relents and admits to being a youthful 23. For his tender years, he has achieved great success and describes himself as a model, actor and singer. Clearly, he could not be more enthusiastic about his new life in Thailand: “I fell in love with Thailand and Thai people from the first day being here. It’s such a great country with the best atmosphere, you cannot find in any other place; so happy and carefree. I love that Thai people smile all the time and I can have a freedom, which I did not have in Russia.” 24

After touring in Phuket and Chiang Mai, he decided to settle in Pattaya: “I felt that Pattaya is so close to my spirit and I have many friends living here. There are lots of shows here and I am able to find good work.” The move has not been all plain sailing and Thai food is just one challenge; “I like it but it’s too spicy and so hot- I prefer spicy and hot bodies instead, “ he says with a provocative grin, adding, “I love plenty of seafood- it’s a natural Viagra!”

Goldenboy says there is no comparison between gay life here and in Russia. “Unfortunately, the mentality in Russia is bad and there is so much homophobia.” He says that he likes everything about his new home, that cheeky grin putting in another appearance. “I have modelled in Europe and the USA, for Vogue Magazine, Elle, Cosmo, Glamour, HDP, and Italy Special and worked as a sound producer in various projects.” His music is on his website and has a retro feel of the eighties- think ABC or Human League.

He takes his work seriously and regards it as a 24/7 job; “I am always in the public eye and have to be that ideal which people expect- it is my body, my behaviour, my image.” Goldenboy is keen to put paid to any notion that blondes- or models- are dumb and is currently working on his first book, working title: Virgin’s Guilt. 25

He has advice for would be models, “Keep your face and body fit and healthy, have a thirst for success, lots of courage and go for it. Accept the many up and downs, make friends with your photographer,” he gives no hint that he is joking when he adds, “and have sex with producers!” But he does have a serious message: “Guys and girls (doesn`t matter) love each other and stop aggression! That’s what I want to say to everybody in the world.” You can learn more about Steve at www. goldenboy.ru 26

Serial Sex

By Kenneth Dobson

Human nature is not naturally monogamous. We are polygamous by nature, and monogamy is imposed by the religious and social idea that family life is the basic building block of society and that a family is more stable if there are boundaries with regard to sex. It is safer for everyone in the family, especially the children, if a man and woman are committed to each other exclusively; it is harmful, to children especially, if a family unit breaks down. The idea that a group or clan might be a safer, more stable, and more workable environment for raising children and for taking care of the needy (as the extended family/ clan operates in most of Asia), but with the provision that sex is shared, is considered destructive.

Open and honest gay people, especially men, feel excluded from religious communities (or sidelined, at least) and are prevented by society from participating in society and having families as heterosexual families are expected to do. Excluded, so, exempt. Not being part of that monogamy-for-the-protection-of-society idea, we do not have to live by those rules. Romanticism and chivalry have an influence in some gay relationships, of course. But, overall, we are freed to live naturally. We have been told that manman sex is repulsive and evil, and we 28

have found out it is not. We were misled about that. Man-man sex is natural for us and it is the best way for sex to be fulfilling to us. Therefore, we say, “No! to the rules and principles that society has evolved for heterosexuals. The things we were taught about sex were wrong. We have been misled about the need for us to conform to society’s rules about who we sleep with. Sex is NOT all about making babies; and it is not all about cementing a permanent commitment between two people. We create our own rules and live in a new form of community.

How it works in the gay world of real people is not so philosophical. It is a playing out of our “back to nature” urge and away from our “inside the lines” training. Gay men learn that sex is not good cement for a relationship; if a relationship is going to last it must be cemented by other commitments. Most of the gay world is childless. In this fraternity-style, post-adolescent, free-spirited environment, commitment is temporary, and a committed relationship is sadly difficult to develop and sustain. It is hard to be sure it even exists. Money can sometimes undo it. And so can sex. But both can help as well as hinder a relationship between two or more people. I can’t resist suggesting that “The more the merrier” may be a good party plan, but a difficult partner plan. Nevertheless, skipping the issue of numbers, the principle is that a relationship must have a primary basis that is more important than sex or money. In Thai gay relationships, this is often a shared life of friendship, understanding, and social standing (in the eyes of the extended families and the village/community at large). The first need of an adult Thai male is to be a provider for

his mother. That may involve money, but surely not in large amounts all at once. If the relationship is between an older foreigner and a younger Thai guy, as it often is with readers of OUT in Thailand, the older man would do well to understand that his most important contribution to the social dimension of the partnership is respectability and social status. The older foreign partner may be the person of highest status in the clan he is entering, and should not endanger that important gift he brings by flagrant and insensitive behaviour. What he gets from his relationship with the younger Thai guy, aside from comfort in bed, is roots in his community, especially if it includes the Thai extended family in a rural village setting. And, of course, he gets care when he needs it, including help in times of illness and whatever else aging brings. Whatever the form of the relationship, there are bound to be clashes of ideas and areas of mismatch. So, where are your lines in the sand, those behaviours or issues that will break your relationship? Are they the more important things on the list? Don’t let your ego ruin an otherwise good thing. 29

OUT on the Internet Your experience of being young, queer and YOU In honour of Queer Youth Empowerment Month in October 2011, Coalition for Queer Youth launched “Testimony” a creative exhibition that tells the story of what it’s like to be young and queer, in the unique voices of those who live/d it. Here are three works that caught OUT iT’s queer eye... by GIANFRANO MOSTERT, Age 23, Keetmanshoop, Namibia Artist Statement: This photo tells my story of freedom of speech, and sexual revolution. I grew up in a small town where few were educated about LGBT people. In a town where dressing any other way than macho-masculine automatically makes you gay; dancing and not doing any kind of sport turns you gay. I was ridiculed and bullied endlessly about my sexuality and my weight. I still struggle with my weight, but I never once believed being gay was ever or could ever be a choice. From these experiences of bullying, I’ve cultivated a rebellious attitude, and a controversial one too. I elicit shock and I provoke those who have narrow-minded views about sexuality, and concepts in general. I’ve always been proud of my sexuality, and with all the ups and downs I went through, that part of my life stood constant; although I am not defined by it, my sexual orientation is an essential and important part of my life. I am an amateur photographer and I try to portray my character, my attitude in the photos I take. At the beginning of this year, I took a more experimental approach in both my art and my attitude. In all the photos I’ve taken of myself in the past, it has had no aesthetics involved, just raw photography. That all changed,

and I started experimenting with props such as masks and crowns, and make up. In a sense, I felt as if I was seeing the true me for the first time. I saw a different side of myself; braver, more adventurous, naughtier and raunchier. I was growing into the person I needed to become. I adopted an attitude I like to call ‘sexual revolution’ from that day onwards. An attitude that says ‘be who you are, and be defined by your potential, and not by standards of others. If you need red lipstick to prove a point, go ahead. Stand proud in anything and everything you do.’ I realised that why bother living if I’m not living it for myself. Being gay isn’t the easiest thing out there, but honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. 31

My Coming Out by KEVIN ‘KEL’ O’NEIL, Founder of Wipeout Homophobia on Facebook (WHOF), United Kingdom – www.facebook.com/ pages/217146731643545#!/WHOF1 I had always known that I was gay, at four or five years old I can remember knowing that I was attracted to boys, I just didn’t know what it meant, but I knew instinctively not to mention it to anyone. As I went through puberty I knew for sure, but still said nothing. At 18 I began to be sexually active, with girls, there was no enjoyment in it, it was just what 18 year olds did. At 23, I had my first sexual experience with a man, and came out to my friends pretty much the same week. A year later, I decided to come out to my family via my father (who is now a member of WHOF). I am from the north east of England (Newcastle upon Tyne) but at the time, I lived in Manchester, so decided to come out by letter. I wasn’t sure what to say so I just wrote the truth, sat down with a pen and paper and just let the words flow. That was the easy part; the hard part was posting the letter. It took about 3/4 of a bottle of vodka before I set off for the post-box, with my letter clutched in my hand. The next morning I woke up at 7 a.m. and the realisation of what I had done suddenly hit me. I got up and dressed and made my way back to the post-box. All the way there I was rehearsing what I would say to the postman when he came to collect the contents of the box, in order to secure the letter’s safe return. Unfortunately, the box had been emptied an hour earlier.

For two days I waited for the reply, every possible connotation of the reply went through my head, from total acceptance to exile. The reply arrived at 9-07 a.m. I can remember the time to this day, 22 years later. The letter said, ‘Kevin, this has come as quite a shock, but, you are my son and I’ll love you whatever you do.’ About six months later, I was at Dad’s house for a dinner to celebrate the fact that he had been given a medal for donating his 50th pint of blood. As we all sat around the table chatting and eating, my Dad suddenly asked, “Kevin do you give blood?” I replied, “As a practicing homosexual it was illegal for me to give blood or carry a donor card”. To which he replied, without missing a beat, “PRACTICING? I would have thought you’d have had it off pat by now!” Everyone laughed, as well as I, and I knew then that I was totally accepted and that I was totally loved. Part 7: I beg your pardon. By Dodger

It was my last visit to Thep before returning to the USA but his name had not been called and I was knotted with anxiety, maybe there had been a mistake? I saw Wan and one of the visitor station security guards walking towards me. Before they even reached the place where I was sitting I sensed that something was up because of the smile on the guards face and the tears in Wan’s eyes. Without saying a word the guard led me to a side door in the visitors building which is normally reserved for lawyer meetings – unlocked the door – motioned for me to take a seat in one of two wooden chairs which were centered in this small room – and simply left me there, closing the door behind him. After a grueling 20 minute wait, the inner door to the room opened and in walked Thep, being led by another secu34

rity guard. I recognized this guard from all of my visits as we always exchanged smiles and small talk in the early morning hours. This was the first time I saw Thep without the glass between us, and I felt numb. I cannot remember what the security guard was saying at that moment, I just got out of my seat – walked across the room and took Thep in my arms. For the first time in all these visits, we both let our guard down. No motivating smiles – no think positive/be positive bullshit – we simply started to weep. His tears were running down my neck soaking the top of my t-shirt. My tears followed a similar path. The guard, who was wearing a smile ear-to-ear, said they knew I was going back to America and wanted us to have some time alone. The inner door of the prison then slammed shut and we were left alone and uninterrupted for the next 2-1/2 hours.

It is hard for me to put into words the emotions that ran between Thep and I at that point. I can only say that the love that we have for each other stole the moment – and the joy of having spent 2-1/2 hours in each other’s arms, far outweighed the sorrow we were both enduring. Most drug addicts return to their drug of choice regardless of the penalties they’ve paid along the road, but Thep will not. I’m saying this with full knowledge that you, the readers of my story, will not agree. This event in Thep’s life will change him forever and change me forever as well. With the HRH the King’s pardon, which was announced 2 days before my departure on 7th December, Thep will be released in 12 months. One more year of incarceration. I will return in April and look forward to spending each day during my 3-month holiday making the run to Nong Palai - all for the opportunity to have 2-1/2 hours to hold him in my arms again. Black Holes, Wormholes and Morgan Freeman’s Pie Hole Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman (Discovery Science, True Vision ch. 151) is now in its second season and is another attempt to bring theoretical physics within the grasp of the average viewer. Does it succeed?

When Stephen Hawking published his mind-strangling book, ‘A Brief History of Time’, he started a fashion of popularising what, for most of us, is

a bigger mystery after the most insightful, quantum explanation of how it all works. Following on from Max Planck (the model for Donald Pleasance’s Blofeld?), Einstein and Dr Strangelove, our fascination for the mad scientist is only surpassed by our appetite for mad science- or so the producers of TTWwMF hope. While white coated boffins smash particles together at staggering speed under Swiss mountains, black suited Mr Freeman gets our grey matter in a tizzy on the telly. There is no doubt that there are few who could do the job as well as Morgan Freeman. He stands in a shadowy studio set that is as full of mystery as the subjects he explores. His richly authoritative tones

36

are a black velvet brew that oozes seductively through the speakers and are informed by his own personal preoccupation with other worldly matters but each show adds up to little more than a raft of rhetorical questions that are answered by a leaky raft of theoretical possibility. Is Time Travel Possible? Does Time Really Exist? Can We Travel Faster Than The Speed Of Light? Are just examples of the shows’ titles and just as it seems that prefixing any quantum conundrum with the word, ‘Dark’, seems to lend credibility, little real light is cast on any of these subjects. The scientific talking heads that expound their pet noirs are cheap as chips and little is spent on the production save for

a few computer generated moments of graphic magic and the wonderfully evocative soundtrack that is appropriately dramatic and enigmatic. Composed by the talented Hans Zimmer, responsible for the movie music in more than 100 films, including, Crimson Tide, Gladiator, The Dark Knight and Inception. Zimmer has won Grammy, Golden Globe, BRIT and Academy Awards and lends much needed gravity to planet TTWwMF. A black hole in space is so dense that even light cannot escape its irresistible pull, we are told. The sounds that emanate from Morgan’s pie hole are equally attractive but also shed no light on the nature of the universe even when the audience is far from dense. 37

Valentine’s Aphrodisiacs From the very ancient world man has constantly sought aphrodisiacs. An ancient Babylonian remedy suggested decapitating a partridge, eating its heart, draining its blood into a cup of water drinking it the next morning. Today’s alleged aphrodisiacs fall into three main groups. Carrots, salamis, cucumbers and marrows have been known to plant thoughts in suggestible minds. But munching powdered rhino horn is as effective as chomping on your own nails. Balut is the Filipino dish of a chicken or duck embryo boiled and sucked from its shell and credited with the power to cause tumescence. Eating fugu, as you flirt with death, can be a taste that borders on the erotic. Foods associated with cost and rarity; imply wealth, luxury and sexual languor. Among western palates truffles, foie gras and champagne top the list. For the suggestible the bliss of eating something expensive may warp into a sensual and sexual experience.

By Doc John

Nonetheless, certain natural substances can have a powerful effect on human physiology. One is spanish fly, a beetle which ranges from southern Europe to Siberia. Crushed and powdered, it has been used for eons. It works by irritating the urethra causing priapism, not a funny condition in which men sustain an erection for hours. An extract from the bark of the west African yohimbe tree was a common treatment for erectile dysfunction. But both spanish fly and yohimbe can cause dangerous adverse reactions: the former can permanently damage the kidneys, while yohimbe provokes anxiety, seizures, high blood pressure and insomnia. Drink provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance. Alcohol has a double influence; strengthening the ardour but weakening the flesh. Booze can lower inhibitions and increase the sex drive so much that it must have contributed to countless couplings through the centuries, and so is a genuine aphrodisiac for many people. The desire to drug a human body – one’s own or another’s – into a state of firm arousal or limp submission is as old as humanity itself. Of all the ludicrous number of foods cited by one desperate it appears that none of them work. So it seems that on St Valentine’s Day, most lovers will be better advised to apply oldfashioned practice of charm, a sense of humour and good scrubbing up.

12 of the Best: Part 3

By Brian Baxter

Concluding this personal choice of great directors.

Fritz Lang: Austria 1890-1976. Born in Vienna, Lang rebelled against his schooling, travelled widely and began the first of his two major ‘careers’ in Germany with classics such as Metropolis and in 1931 the powerful M. He moved to the USA and a prolific period making thrillers, dramas and westerns followed. He became notoriously difficult with actors, and found it difficult to get work. He returned to Germany for four last films but died in Los Angeles. His films include masterpieces such as Fury, a study of mob violence, a reworking of a Renoir classic, Human Desire, portraits of obsession including Scarlet Street, the electrifying Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, the elegantly gothic House by the River and the revenge -fuelled The Big Heat. Choice: M (1931). With Peter Lorre as the pathetic, insane child murderer hunted by the police but found by the underworld and put on trial by them. Lorre’s frightening performance and the final ‘court’ scene make this one of the cinema’s most intense experiences. Lang like 40

all the great directors knew the two key aspects of his craft: where to put the camera and how to create a personal vision. Terrence Malick: U.S.A. 1943 - Malick takes no prisoners. In a current Hollywood churning out movies for the simple minded, he is a true maverick, an original, whose 1973 debut Badlands was followed by the haunting The Days of Heaven (1978) and nearly twenty years later The Thin Red Line. The New World and The Tree of Life (2010) complete a quintet of masterly films. He has found a rhythm in production, long denied him and has already made Voyage of Time (2012) described as ‘an examination of the birth and death of the universe’. Three other films with starry casts (Brad Pitt has leads in both recent films) are already in pre- production. His films are instantly recognisable as auteurist, with minimal dialogue, voice over commentary, languorous imagery, complex sound tracks and ambitious themes, vivid use of nature and poetic meditations on humanity.

Peter Lorre

Choice: Despite the majestic The Thin Red Line, his latest work The Tree of Life stays in the mind as a vivid recreation of a particular family and way of life. Aleksandr Sukurov: Russia 1951 -. The documentaries and feature director Sukurov achieved international popularity with his most accessible work Russian Ark (2002). This single –take film is arguably the most remarkable tour de force in cinema, although many of his films are more profound. Like Malick he is a poet of the cinema, a true original and works such as Mother and Son, Father and Son and the trilogy Moloch, Taurus and The Sun ( about Lenin, Hitler and the Emperor Hirohito) are all masterpieces. Few of his productions are shown in the west but the latest, Faust. has already been released in Italy. Choice: The Sun is a strong contender but Father and Son wins out. Sukurov expressed surprise when critics found the imagery homo-erotic and the relationship between the two handsome men resonant with sexual undertones. A difference between cultures, perhaps. However viewed, it’s a deeply affecting study of intense camaraderie.

Roberto Rossellini: Italy 1906-’77. Indisputably Italy’s premier director, who burst to fame with the unforgettable Rome, Open City (’45), shot clandestinely whilst the city was still occupied by the Nazis. This rawest, most visceral portrait of war ever was followed by Paisa and Germany, Year Zero. He married Ingrid Bergman and the resulting five movies include three of his masterpieces –best of all Voyage to Italy. He was prolific and made documentaries and worked for television, later making a series of ‘biopics’ about Pascal, Socrates and others. He was a formidable intellectual, a far better filmmaker than his flamboyant contemporaries and was reevaluated by the French. Choice: The Rise of Louis XIV, colourful and comedic, is surely the most accomplished of his later works. It was his first use of synchronous sound and he felt liberated. It shows in the fluency and accessibility. Bonus movie? David Lean/Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter. Perfect despite imperfections, largely thanks to Celia Johnson’s luminous central performance. As English as a Devon cream tea, as durable as a Savile Row suit and a true desert island movie. 41

Ask Darika

Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com

Dear Darika, Bet you have never heard a story like mine before. I have been living with a guy in (it does not matter) for the past three years. We can call him “Lin.We are in love with each other. He asks me for very little. We both have good jobs. Our domestic partnership could not be better. He irons. I cook. We still have a pretty great sex life. Lin recently returned from a lengthy visit to his family, who live in a village about three hours away. Soon after his return, he announced that he will be getting married. His parents have chosen a girl 42

who they think is suitable. He does not seem to be particularly upset at this turn of events, even if it means he will have to move back to his village and become a farmer and produce a bunch of kids. It is clear that he thinks he has no choice. I am devastated. I want him to do what he thinks is best for himself and his future. However, I feel that I have invested heavily in our relationship and am entitled to a vote. By the way, I have met his family several times and they fully understand our relationship. Please tell me what to do.

Dearest, First of all it is worth noting for my readers that you are living in a neighboring country that is considered less developed than Thailand. Second, I have heard this story many, many times and it always upsets me. One immediate concern is that Lin seems unable to explain his choice and is apparently unwilling to seek your counsel. Yes, you are entitled to a vote. In fact, you have an obligation to speak your mind. I hope that my modest advice will help prepare you to do so. For generations, people like Lin’s parents have arranged the marriages of their children. The fact that he already has a relationship with you is completely irrelevant in their minds. This is what parents do in order to have grandchildren and to insure that their child has someone to take care of them when they grow old. One of my dearest friends was forced into an arranged marriage two years ago. We talked at length about it but he eventually caved in to his parents’ wishes. Things went badly from the beginning. He did not last long in the village and quickly returned to the city, where he still lives. Although he is only in his twenties, he took certain blue pills in order to fulfill his monthly sexual obligation. That ended a year ago with the birth of a child, who lives with his wife and his parents in the village. He lost his boyfriend, who did not like the idea of him having intimate relations with a woman. The end result has been bad for everyone. He sends money home ever month. He has

not returned to the village since the child was born and has slowly resumed the life he had. His daughter will never have the kind of father his parents had in mind. His wife is now “spoiled” and will never be able to marry again, even though she is not yet thirty. The whole story is tragic and so unnecessary. Try your best to make Lin understand that the world has changed since his parents were married. This kind of tradition has no place in this century. He needs to understand that he has a choice, and that he can refuse as long as he makes it clear to his parents that he means no disrespect. (Maybe a new refrigerator would be a great consolation prize.) They may reject him if he has the strength to refuse. However, you are his family now and your relationship seems to still have a promising future. Ultimately, the decision is Lin’s. However, be prepared for an impending wedding. You can take the high road, attend the wedding, and become an uncle some day. However, I would not blame you if you told Lin clearly that he would be closing the door on you and your relationship for good if he marries. The more important thing you should be thinking about at this point is what you will do when he gives up and wants to return to you. Good luck! Love,

The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists. Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Sanctuary Spa by A feature among many massage spas. Balcony Pub is a popular watering hole and if meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar. Up2 Salon and Cutey & Beauty will make you beautiful! Bangkok Babylon is a popular landmark and night owls party at DJ Station. The Malaysia Hotel is also a favourite. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws

thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 CafĂŠ, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. OUT in Koh Samui J

Jungle covered craggy hills, roads weaving through lush coconut plantations, huge trees, orchids, butterflies, quiet beaches, fresh local fruits. Koh Samui is the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys, especially couples who kick back, recharge in spas or health resorts, lounge around their villa pool, take long beach walks, sip a cocktail or three in a rustic beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit with the local guys.

Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening with gay bars, disco, cabaret, island tours and as the regional spa capital, massage and body treatments. The center of gay day/nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end opposite Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club a well-established gay only spa for a range of quality massage techniques and treatments. Mekkala Men Spa promise to rejuvenate you and Rainbow Scuba & Tour for a paradise island adventure. Tropical Garden Lounge Resort and Fisherman’s Village are favourites. In south Chaweng, Tropical Fah Samui for massage and wellness treatments and opposite the Centara Resort is Boy Zone a smart gay bar with a nightly dance show at 11.30 pm and 56

take away staff. Further out of Chaweng in Cheong Mon, close to Sala Samui is Saiwon Mens Spa men only massage and body treatments. From midnight to 2 pm Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul disco/ bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music and mixed crowds. On Lamai Beach, close to Grandfather and Grandmother Rock, is The Dinky Rock hotel, bar and massage. The Five Islands Restaurant is a favourite. For an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at gay venues or ask your hotel for a copy. OUT in Chiang Mai Try the superb La Fourchette and Chez Marco (both French) and Prego (Italian & Thai) restaurants inside the moated, old city walls and the inviting Yokka Dok bar/restaurant/. Mandalay Disco is a favourite with night owls. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Circle Pub has hunky guys on stage and The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s gem with famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Gemini Massage and Marn Mai Chai Kha Massage have regular promotions and are recommended. Ram Coffee & Bar is set on the river, close to the Nawarat Bridge. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars. Check out Sangdee Gallery & Cafe and on Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Soho Bar and Guesthouse who serve incomparable New Orleans food. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the

long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Club M Karaoke is a favourite. Santitham is not far away, with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops. ZII Condom is the place to go for condoms, lube and more. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more, The Blues Club, Mystic Orient, My Artist Spa, Sanctuary Spa and River House Massage are all worthy of a visit or three! XS & JK Solutions is your one stop solution for all national and local real estate and legal issues. Independent Travel provides a trusted, price-integrated service. OUT in Phuket P

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms. Thai’s Best Boys and the disco at Boat Bar are favourites. Outside Paradise Complex, there are

some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Phuket Travel Company, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and k araoke nights, reservation only. Aspara Residence has modern Thai style rooms. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. CC Bloom’s Hotel and Centara Grand Beach Resort are close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com 71

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets.

In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. Pattaya Hotmale is your one-stop info and cafe centre. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Spilia Karaoke at Ganymede Hotel & Sauna is worth a visit. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the very popular Sansuk Sauna & Guesthouse and the newly opened, luxurious, Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. In Soi 2, 80

check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar is popular and Eros Boy Bar and Happy Boys Bar are both friendly venues. Getaway to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach- very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd at weekends and stay at Silver Sand Resort.
