The award winning journalist of The Nation and gay rights activist took time out of his busy schedule to talk to James Barnes about his life and work. Some consider his views to be explosive: he is at the spearhead of a new generation of gay Thais who demand to be heard. The National Lesbian and Gay Federation of Ireland with the GALA International Prize honoured Paisarn Likhitpreechakul, The Nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s columnist on gay affairs since 2001, for Gay Rights Activist of the Year sponsored jointly by Amnesty International (Irish section), Front Defenders, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and the National Lesbian and Gay Federation. Paisarn was also awarded the prize for Gay Activist of the Year in OUT iTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first national awards. 8

A defender of gay and other rights, he fought against the Army’s practice of altering the personal records of transgender draftees to describe them as ‘suffering from permanent psychosis.’ The Thai courts have now ruled against the practise. “It marked a huge stride forward for transgender rights in the country,” he said, adding, “It is very meaningful that the court found in favour of the petition because the court reasoned that transgenders are like everyone else, they have human rights and human dignities that cannot be violated.” “When I heard about it, I saw hope that even the most conservative sector in society can change, that times have changed and they realise that and they are willing to move with the times.” Paisarn told of how these awards sent a strong message of support and solidarity to all the members of the homosexual community in Thailand, many of whom are working in very isolated and vulnerable situations. “Despite the gay-friendly image that Thailand enjoys internationally, there is much ingrained homophobia and discrimination.”

“There is a myth, especially among foreigners, that Thailand is ‘tolerant’ towards gays and transgenders. After all, hardly a day goes by without one seeing a ladyboy or katoey [male-to-female transgender]. Most Thais also like to believe in such a feel-good story, as well as spin it to foreigners.” Paisarn was born in Phitsanulok Province but is cagey about his age, “This is going to hurt my dating opportunities! Let me say that I’m exactly where life is supposed to begin. He studied engineering in Japan for a few years and quit. Then he came back to Thailand and went to medical school, but didn’t finish. “So I’m a proud double dropout!” he jokes. He says that his childhood was pretty uneventful. “I grew up in a small city, definitely not the most ‘happening’ place. When I was about eight or nine, I saw a picture of Michelangelo’s David and thought, “Wow, I wanted to be like him.” Now, looking back, I think I didn’t really want to be like him. I wanted to be with him. That was probably my first ‘gay’ moment.” 9

There is a myth especially among foreigners that Thailand is ‘tolerant’

“I actually came to the full realization that I was gay, very late, at about 19. At first, it’s only my body telling me I was gay but I was not mentally prepared to accept it. I struggled with it for a couple of years until I fell in love with someone and everything fell into place.” After another few years of a long-distance relationship with my first boyfriend, I decided to move to New York to start a life together with him. Then only two weeks into it, my parents called to tell me about a serious crisis at home. So I had to come back to help sort it out. At the end of the agreed 10

period, they begged me not to go back to New York, so I had to tell them who was waiting for me there.” “They were surprised, but I guess at that point they didn’t really have a choice but accept me. Although my mum, I’m sure, would have no problem anyway, my dad thought it was a phase and kept suggesting girls for me to marry for the rest of his life. Both my younger brother and my late sister were also wonderful about it. Unfortunately, the relationship itself didn’t survive the separation in the end.”

Paisarn never thought about becoming a writer although, these days it is a compulsion, “Growing up, all I was told was that I should become a doctor or an engineer. Well, I tried both and it didn’t work out very well. I read a lot and when I was in med school, I kept a journal and began to write some poetry as a way to work out my angst and confusion in a structured way. From then on, it was more like a compulsion. I write because I have to. It’s like you feel this internal turmoil that needs to be depressurized. So you write, otherwise you implode inside.”

An avid reader, this fiercely intelligent guy is a fan of the classics. “I was inspired by universal poets like Tagore and Gibran. And I read a lot of fiction, but if I have to pick one book, which wins hands down, it would be Orwell’s 1984 which spookily resembles present day Thailand. With a background in science, I also love popular science books like those by Darwin, Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins. As a student of early Buddhism, I am also a big fan of Professor Richard Gombrich with whom I studied Pali – the Buddha’s language – this summer.” 11

‘Thailand can make human rights history’

Paisarn has now been with the Nation for 10 years but started working for the English-language listings magazine Bangkok Metro. “A friend, Don Pathan whom I met while volunteering one summer at a refugee camp, suggested that I interviewed with The Nation as a science writer. But soon, it was more than science that I covered.” Khun Phatarawadee “Ann” Phataranawik, editor of the new ‘Weekend’ section, came up with the idea of a gay column in 2001. “She asked if I was interested. I was just out of a 8-year relationship and didn’t know much of anything about Bangkok gay life, but I thought I would love to know a bit more, so I accepted. I believe “Out and About” was the first regular gay column in a mainstream newspaper in Thailand.” 12

Paisarn is enthusiastic about his work, especially having the opportunity to cover important subjects with a wide audience. “The greatest thing about being a gay columnist at The Nation is that they allow me to write for the op/ed page in the main section, which reaches a much wider audience, not just column fans. Personally rewarding for me were the opinion pieces written between November 2010 and June 2011 on Thailand’s LGBT stance at the UN. The first one (“It’s time for Thailand to end state homophobia”) was written out of my indignation at Thailand’s abstention in November 2010 when ‘sexual orientation’ was voted off the list of grounds for protection against extrajudicial killings in a resolution.” When there was an effort to reinstate it one month later, he wrote another. “There’s nothing partial about universal rights- this second piece was presented at the press conference we organized in which international human rights expert Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn was keynote speaker. We also submitted a letter to PM Abhisit through the Office of the Prime Minister, asking that Thailand vote to support this global effort. It was followed by another piece (“Thailand must not condone a ‘licence to kill’ gays”) on the day of the voting. When it turned out that Thailand abstained again, we staged a mock-execution protest in front of the Government House and submitted a letter demanding explanation.”

Later, as a reaction to the whole extrajudicial killing resolution incident there was another international effort at the UN Human Rights Council to get as many countries as possible to sign on a joint-statement calling for an end to violence and discrimination against LGBT’s. “So we sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry asking them to cosign the statement but didn’t organize a protest or anything, and I wrote another piece (“Thailand’s shameful rejection of human rights”). I don’t know if the people at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs actually read any of my stuff. I suspect that they might have because while I was in Geneva to speak at an unrelated side-event at the UN Human Rights Council, a member of the Irish delegation came over to ask if I wrote the opinion piece and congratulated me because Thailand had just signed the joint-statement as urged in the article! I was incredulous at first, but a key member of the US delegation said the same thing. I think they perhaps gave the article too much credit, though. If anything,

by reminding the government that we’re keeping an eye on their moves, it gave the final push for the official re-positioning which many of us have worked for over the years. Still it gives me a small personal satisfaction that I got to play a part in all of this.” In June 2011, a group of countries led by South Africa proposed a draft resolution which if passed would become the first-ever UN resolution specifically on sexual orientation and gender identity. This inspired another compelling piece from Paisarn: ‘Thailand can make human rights history.’ “This urged our UN delegation to support it. And Thailand was among the 23 member countries of the UN Human Rights Council to vote in favour and pass this historic resolution. So our work with the Foreign Ministry over the years finally made a difference. And we went to meet them and express our gratitude a week later.” Part 2 Next Month. 13

Purple People By Kenneth Dobson

My friend and I were having lunch at a street-side restaurant when a charming vision of young male-dom glided by. “Do you think he’s one of the purple people?” my friend asked. It is a game we play. Of course, any answer is right because neither of us is going to have facts, except our gaydar based on not much more than simple intuition and latent hope.

But this time I thought, “Hum. ‘Purple People’ is a title that doesn’t sting.” Not all of the things we are called are so benign. On the other hand, it does depend on who is doing the name-calling. Members of stigmatized minority groups sometimes adopt the worst epithet from the oppressive majority as a code word among themselves to promote bonding. We have begun to use “queer” that way. LGBTQ is showing up more and more in our literature. If we use the term, it is OK, but if they are calling us queer, somebody is going to be hurt one way 20

or another. Nevertheless, it has taken several decades to domesticate the word queer even this much. The pink triangle has taken just as long. It was used by the NAZI’s as the patch sewn onto clothing of homosexual males being transported to concentration camps. Now we carry big pink triangles in our gay pride rallies along with our rainbow flags. It is less well remembered that black triangles were what the NAZI’s forced lesbians to wear, because these women were judged to be anti-social for presumably refusing to

carry out National Socialism’s role for all Aryan women was to produce the next generation of the master race. What an irony that the great grand daughters of the ones they sent away for refusing to bear children are now being vilified for insisting on the right for lesbian couples to have children. We are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. We should be used to it by now. One of the sources of power we give to oppressors and tyrants is to acquiesce to the names they pin on us. Therefore, we fight against their terms for us and for the oppression they bring. But, later when we reclaim the name or the symbol, we achieve a double victory: we regain control over our identity and its meaning and we retain in full view our oppressor’s shame, to prevent it being denied. I am hinting that we could proudly add some big black triangles to our gay pride parades.

I have always thought of “homosexual” as a neutral, vaguely scientific term for us. Of course, “homosexual” does not fit our bi-sexual and our transsexual kinfolks, so it is flawed by not being comprehensive of the sexual diversity we espouse. And now a recent book argues that “homosexual”, too, is a pejorative label we should resist since outsiders to describe us as medical cases, which we are not, invented it. The designation “invert” was rejected for this reason 75 years ago, even though the most supportive of our ancestors, including Oscar Wilde and Marcel Proust, thought of themselves as inverts and thought it was a progressive thing to be called. It takes effort and vigilance to be inclusive and non-objectifying in thought, word and deed. And that, of course, is the issue: how to resist being treated as “other” and how to keep from doing that to…uh…others. So, for the next season or so I will try out the friendly, inclusive term Purple People and see how it fits.

Venture OUT Sea Seeking By Adam Preston

With over 3,000 km of coastline, the Kingdom of Thailand is sure to have something to please everyone who likes to spend time by the sea, whether you prefer snorkelling, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, motor crafts or just relaxing with cool sea breezes. Another factor, which can influence our decision on where to go, is the level of gay life available. It is always going to be a compromise between quality of the natural environment and existence of a gay scene. Gay life needs a certain critical mass of people to make it happen so big cities have it all while there is far less happening at small resort areas.

People looking for good snorkelling and scuba diving in the Gulf of Thailand should know that coral reefs only occur south of Chumpon province. Koh Tao has great snorkelling and scuba diving but has no gay scene. Nearby, Koh Pangan has great beaches and is a thriving location for wind and kite surfers but not so good snorkelling or scuba diving and, as on Koh Tao, the backpacker hetero scene leaves many gay people feeling isolated and bored at night.

Koh Samui is not far away. With its international airport, wide range of gay friendly accommodation and growing gay ex-pat community it is the centre for gay life in the region. Several new bars have opened in the last year. While the beaches in the main tourist centres are busy, the south and east coast are still largely deserted and pristine with good options for snorkelling, kayaking and kite surfing. On the Andaman coast, the three main tourist destinations are worlds apart in terms of gay scene. Phuket is one of the most established in Thailand while Krabi is in its infancy and on Phi Phi you are likely to feel like the only gay on the island. For scuba divers the best day trip in the region is the The King Cruiser Wreck, Anemone Reef and Shark Point- all about equal distance from Krabi, Phuket or Phi Phi, about 2 hours sailing.

Visitors to the famous Phang Nga Bay area can stay in Phuket, Krabi or the town of Phang Nga itself. This bay formed between Krabi and Phuket has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The shallow water and river run-off make it unsuitable for snorkelling or scuba diving but great for sailing and famous for canoeing and sightseeing. To avoid the crowds, overnight trips are the best way to explore. Some companies provide accommodation on the small islands, while others have boats with cabins.

Big Talila’s Moving Movie Shlomi Refaeli is an Israeli writer who is telling a new story in a new medium: a touching documentary film set in the stunning scenery of Pai- the beautiful rural retreat that draws thousands of tourists to the north of Thailand. Shlomi spoke to James Barnes about his life and the movie, ‘Big Talila’.

In Israel he worked as a journalist for “Hadashot Newspaper” and Haifa’s local ’paper, “Yediot Tikshoret” but in 2001 he moved to the peaceful haven of Pai after visiting Bangkok and Chiang Mai as a tourist. He loves the dramatic contrast between his new home and the turbulence of Israeli life. His biographical documentary is about a very unusual person named Talila. She is originally from Israel and is a 51-year-old male to female transsexual. For the last 8 years, she has also been living in Pai. “I have known Talila for many years and when a mutual friend, Edna Swartz suggested making a movie about Talila, I 26

went for it,” he says. The project began as a short ‘clip’ but it soon became clear that there was huge potential to make a major film and in a little over three years, there is now more than 100 hours of footage with more to shoot. Director, Shlomi says that the final cut will run for just over one hour. In Israel, Talila worked as a prostitute for 20 years, mostly on the streets. She says she stopped counting after 25,000 customers. Talila likes to be with women too. Her best friend is Asu, a Lisu hill tribe woman. Asu is the mother of seven daughters, two of them adopted. She is

a poor woman, but very hard working. Asu grows rice for her clan (some of the rice sacks are stored in Talila’s house); She also makes wallets and cloth which she sells at the night market in Pai. Asu cleans Talila’s house and has learned to make an Israeli salad for her. In exchange, Talila bought her a motorbike and helps with money. In the film, Talila talks about her life, past and present, as the audience views images of the beautiful Pai valley and it’s amazing people. Talila is a celebrity in Pai. Everybody knows her. The film shows her interactions with travellers

from all over the world and with the local Thai people. Her physical presence alone asks people to let go of their limited ideas of what it means to be a man or a woman. In addition, Talila is not shy and boldly challenges people with her feedback. After knowing someone for five minutes, she tells them exactly what their problem is and offers her solution. She is very honest. When asked what she did in Israel, she does not hesitate to say she was a prostitute. It is a tribute to her that she has many friends. While talking about her life in the past, we see her building a hut for flowers in 27

her back yard. She goes to the back of a grocery shop, a patch of jungle and for 30 baht, she is allowed to cut bamboo and she carries it off on her motorbike. While she is cutting the bamboo, she tells what it is like to be a transsexual. She lives in the twilight zone between being a man and a woman but prefers to be treated as a woman. “Thais are relatively small people and, because of her size, Talila has had many problems,” says Shlomi, “small chairs sometimes get broken when she sits on them or they give her back pain. When she weighs herself on a public scale, it shows “O.L” meaning “overload!” The locals call her, ‘Farang chang noi’ (little foreign elephant) and in the film, she talks 28

about her process of self-acceptance and how her family came to accept her as well. The film is amusing as it is moving with Talila’s special brand of humorous philosophy. The movie’s soundtrack is based on authentic Lisu hill tribe music, giving it an enchanting, otherworldly feel. Talila is unique, interesting and charismatic. Here is a person whose philosophy, thoughts and observations about life need to be documented and preserved on film. This movie is intended to amaze, educate, and open minds. Talila says, “Enough with these rules, of man or woman, there are people who are in the middle. There are people who are not defined”.

Ab Fab is (still) Ab Fab Auntie Beeb (The BBC) have launched four new channels on True Vision in Thailand- a godsend for the discerning viewer who can luxuriate in that peculiarly English language and humour that is missing in the land of smiles. On BBC Entertainment (True Vision ch.149) you can revisit Eddy and Patsy, our old friends in Absolutely Fabulous.

Hard to believe that Ab Fab first burst onto the small screen in 1992. It really is 20 years since we were originally treated to the comic capers of those two middle-aged teenagers: Eddy the faddish PR guru (said to be based on real life PR consultant Lynne Franks), permanently searching for herself and Patsy, one time super model and all time lush and slut. Eddy’s teenage middle-aged daughter Saffron, proved that it is the children who raise their parents- always disapproving of her mother’s drug taking life in the fat lane. 32

Most TV sitcoms suffer aging even less that our dynamic duo but Ab Fab is as funny today as it was two decades back. Jennifer Saunders, wrote the script and populates Eddie’s character as fully as can be in a cartoon portrayal and Joanna Lumley’s Patsy Stone is a towering edifice of crumbling glamour held together by bottles of Bolly and countless nosefulls of a mysterious white powder. A supporting cast that includes top talents like Jane Horrocks (Little Voice), Julia Sawalha (Pride & Prejudice) and English comedy stalwart June Whitfield make this one of

the best loved telly comedies of all time. The guest stars that turned up to play themselves ranged from Sir Elton John through Helena Bonham-Carter to Minnie Driver, allow themselves to be pilloried and brought a busload of kudos and comedy classic moments to every show. Ab Fab is still a biting satire on the fashion industry and after all these years, it remains a sabre toothed treat that every OUT iT will love to revisit or be introduced to.

Gay themes abound, with Eddy’s model son, Serge, only ever seen in one show, being a gay guy in New York, fathered by Eddy’s second husband who is also gay. Eddy even adopts Serge’s boyfriend as her own son. Eleanor Bron as an Absinthe-swilling, bohemian nymphomaniac, played Patsy’s mother- like mother like daughter, love both. Let’s hope that the BBC shows all five seasons of Absolutely Fabulous, along with the three recently made ‘specials’. 33

“Herbal Viagra” is it Safe? By Doc John

Men at any age can suffer from the occasional failure of erection- one just can’t get it up or keep it up. This is not a problem except when it happens frequently or has been diagnosed as erectile dysfunction (ED); a condition that many more mature men suffer. There are many products on the market to temporarily relieve the condition some of them are prescribed drugs, like Viagra, others are ‘natural’ over-the-counter (OTC) remedies. When choosing a natural remedy for ED, be careful as these products are not required to undergo the rigorous testing of prescription medications. This lack of proper testing makes it difficult to tell which natural cures are safe or effective. To achieve and maintain an erection Viagra and other prescribed drugs focus on increasing penile blood flow. Some ‘natural’ (OTC) pills do this too but none of them do this specifically as a result they act more general actions on the body. This effect may cause a dangerous lowering of blood pressure particularly in men who are taking heart medications. Some natural remedies may be worthwhile options for easing erectile dysfunction. Examples of herbal remedies used 34

for sexual problems include ginseng, ginkgo, L-arginine and yohimbe. However, there’s still limited evidence on how well they work — and some have known dangers. For example, yohimbe can interact with prescription medications and increase heart rate and blood pressure. If you have ED, see your doctor to make sure it isn’t caused by an underlying health problem or isn’t a side effect of medication. Your safest bet in treating ED is to rely on your doctor’s recommendations. Before using any herbal remedy or supplement, check with your doctor to make sure it’s safe for you.

Actually I didn’t. Know, I mean. Know that he is, was, could be gay. Nor, I suspect, do Johnny, Ben, Tobey, Matt, Taylor, George or any of the other gorgeous guys who get so liberally co-opted to our already swollen ranks. Not even their wives, girl friends, or kids know, so how could we? It’s a little difficult to understand the need to ‘borrow’, when there are already scores of gay actors who long ago passed the audition. Not to mention those who help out when the others are busy. Not least the legendary James Dean, who brought such a gleam to little Sal Mineo’s eye all those years ago. Film history is full also of so-called affairs, Cary Grant and Randolph Scott most famously, and Larry Olivier and Danny Kaye. But gay? Not really. All of which is by way of an introduction to a new series for Out in Thailand. No fantasies or speculation here, nor perhaps any revelations. We’ll be leaving out some of the current crop who have not yet outed themselves. All in good time, when they realise that in any civilised society gayness is no longer a 36

crime nor is it a hindrance to a serious career. After all no one ever said you need be straight to play Richard 111, go on amazing missions, get to act with the lamented River Phoenix…..or even drive a bus. The series - Straight Acting - will hark back as far as Ramon Novarro and that outrageous doyen of the profession, Ernest Thesiger; on to the cutest, Tab Hunter; the most famous Rock Hudson; the great Shakespearian knights Ian McKellan and John Gielgud; the most mixed up, Anthony Perkins, Montgomery Clift and Charles Laughton; the most closeted, Dirk Bogarde and Eric Portman; the least likely, Raymond Burr; the blackest, Paul Winfield; the most handsome, Farley Granger and a handful of others. Many, you will have noted, are no longer with us – although Rupert Everett emphatically is along with Simon Callow and countless thesps on television. Others, who have already departed, including Van Johnson, George Nader, Roddy McDowell and Sal Mineo, are also in our sights.

Those behind the cameras will have to be left out – even the notable directors such as George Cukor and James Whale, let alone the countless writers, technicians, editors, cameramen and designers – let alone the wardrobe, makeup and hair specialists. They all left their mark, not just on the movie business, because of their refusal to hide the simple fact that they were gay and by their fame and eminence somehow made it easier for others to join them and for a bigoted society to accept that fact. It’s more comforting to hear someone say – with a note of re-assurance in their voice - “I didn’t know he was gay’ than to hear the words which title this article. After all, we might argue, if Mozart (Tom Hulce), Ironside (Burr), Mc Millan (Hudson) and that nice doctor you could trust, Kildare (Richard Chamberlain) were all gay then why not me. Why not indeed? 37
