James Barnes <editor@out-in-thailand.com> SHOUT OUT ! May 2012 You
This marvellous May issue is a medley of musicality. We celebrate the success of OUT iT’s campaign to bring Lady Gaga to Bangkok, review Madonna’s MDNA and there’s a guide to Thailand’s most popular musical genre: the sounds of Isaan. Memories of Mahler resonate as we mark the centenary of Mann’s ‘Death in Venice’ and there’s all your regular favourites. There was no surprise when Reuters recently confirmed Thailand as the world’s number one gay destination but how did India manage to move up to second place? Homophobia is as widespread as Delhi-Belly and our choice will always be Thailand for the best gay life in the world! Best wishes,
James Barnes

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, born March 28, 1986, better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, has rapidly become the world’s number one gay icon. OUT iT has been campaigning for her to come to play in Thailand for more than a year. She will appear live in Bangkok on the 25th of this month.

Born and raised in New York City, she studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and briefly attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts before focusing on her musical career. She began performing in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, was signed with Streamline Records by the end of 2007 and came to prominence with the release of her debut album The Fame (2008). After The
Fame Ball Tour, she followed the album with The Fame Monster (2009), which spawned the worldwide hit singles “Bad Romance”, “Telephone” and “Alejandro”. The album’s success allowed her to embark on the eighteen-month long Monster Ball Tour, which later became one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time. Now, the Born This Way Ball Tour comes to Thailand.

“Some people don’t feel the need to be liberated and that’s OK. I have a message and will fight to the death for it,” she says, adding, “I suppose, after all the success, being so blessed with the wonderful fans I have and able to tour the world and make music that I love, I made a vow to myself that I would stand for something- not just the materialism of fame. I would rather use my position to change the world if I could.” She involves herself with LGBT activism, which is just one reason for her popularity with gays, worldwide. She says that the ‘Born This Way’ album is about being reborn: “Sexuality is just one very small part of it and I think it’s interesting to see the way people latch on to words. You say the word gay in a song and suddenly all the other words float away and the focus goes in just one word. I’m happy that everyone focused on that word, though. It’s an important word to liberate. But the album is about rebirth in every sense. It’s about being able to be reborn over and over again until you find the identity inside of yourself that defines you best for who you are, that makes you feel the most like a champion of life.” 10
“I’m concerned but excited to liberate the idea that I am more criticised for the authenticity of my political activism as based on a scale of one to 10 how queer I am,” she confides with a hint of the individual rebellion that millions of fans identify with. “I believe that the boundaries of love and acceptance can be pushed by anyone or anything that has revolutionary potential and I don’t give a God damn what you think about me.” Lady Gaga may be blonde but she sure isn’t dumb: “Most of the time I think that it’s not what I’m saying that pisses people off, but that I have anything to say at all!” It is another chord of her belief that is so resonant with the young. “I also sing about artifice and the surreal and magic. That’s exactly what I try to com-
bat and liberate at the same time- the idea that I live halfway between reality and fantasy at all times because I choose to, and anyone can choose that, and I believe everybody has something so magical about themselves and why, as a society, are we so afraid of magic? Why is magic synonymous with artifice? Why is the fantastic synonymous with a lie? If art is a lie, then I will tell that lie every day until it’s fucking true.” “I would say that if I could describe myself as an artist in terms of theatrical philosophy, I would say that I am Brechtian because there is an element of fantasy, there is an element of theatre but you can see right through it. It doesn’t ruin the integrity or the fantasy of the theatre and, in fact, it is an overarching statement about the corruption of the government and the need for transparency in government and society. So if you were to tell the world anything, tell them she is the Bertolt Brecht of pop music.” This openness is a hallmark of the star who has the most Twitter followers and constantly updates her fans through Facebook.

The Bangkok show will not disappoint and Lady Gaga is well prepared, “I’m quite disciplined in piano rehearsal, voice rehearsal, dance rehearsal, putting the show together, but then there’s this other element which not many people get to experience, and that is that I am my best when I’m unafraid to be imperfect.” She is also in harmony with Asian cultural family values: “I’ve purchased my dad’s heart valve and a Rolls Royce for my parents, for their anniversary. And that was only because my dad had a Lady Gaga licence plate on our old car and it was making me crazy because he was getting followed everywhere, so I bought him a new car. Other than that, I put everything in the show and I actually went bankrupt after the first extension of the Monster Ball.” 12
Lady Gaga is tired of her reported rivalry with that other Catholic New Yorker, Madonna, “I genuinely love her so much. I think she is so amazing. She could never be replicated and, yes, I’m Italian, I’m from New York, and not for nothing, it’s not my fault that I kind of look like her, right? So, look, if anything it’s more annoying to me that people would insinuate that I don’t like to be compared to her. She’s wonderful, inspiring and liberating, and she’s certainly inspired my album, as did David Bowie, as did Prince, as did Michael Jackson, as did Grace Jones, and I would never take that away. So there’s my mission statement, is if anything, thank you from the bottom of my heart for comparing me to these legendary people.” You can see the legend, live in Bangkok on 25th May at the Rajamangala Stadium.

Can we call Madonna a Diva? With over 300 Million records sold, a 30+year track record and recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s Top selling female recording artist of all time. I think we can. 30 years after her 1st single “Everybody” was released back in 1982 Madonna is defiantly back and ready to give today’s Pop Princess’s a run for the top slot.
By Steve Lush
Steve’s only been in the Far East since the end of October 2011 and has already become a popular DJ with the crowds at VOLUME BEAT, The HYDE CLUB in Hong Kong, Out In The Open & at the Official Closing Hong Kong Pride Party. Steve Lush will be in Thailand very soon. This month he reviews Madge’s new album... 14
“MDNA” is the 12th Studio Album to come from Madonna and is the 1st Album to come from her new signup with Interscope Records. Until now, Madge has been with Warner Bros. Madonna had a strong team behind her to help with the writing, arranging and production. They included William Orbit who she worked on with her 1998 phenomenally successful and acclaimed
“Ray of Light” album, current chart toppers LMFAO, Nicki Minaj & Benny Benassi. “GIRL GONE WILD” -as it stands in its current format before anyone is let rip on remixing it is one of my favourite tracks on the album. Its pure Madonna pop (wanting to go wild and have fun). This track would be an excellent one to release as the 1st single.
15
Don’t be surprised if “I’M A SINNER” is being belted out in the clubs, it’s one of the stronger tracks on the album and has a feel of Madonna “Ray Of Light” about it.
“GANG BANG” -another strong track on the album. With lyrics such as “Shot You Dead” & “Shot My Lover” It is a very deep and dark track with an underground feel to it. It’s all about taking revenge on an Ex, we’ve all been there in the past and as we know Madge is no exception. “I’M ADDICTED” –upbeat, makes you wonder what it is that she finds addictive… listen to it carefully. Both the arrangement & production on “TURN UP THE RADIO” were spot on. Did they have “ABBA” in mind when sitting down to arrange it? Who knows! Nicki Minaj gives some credibility to the 1st single to be released from MDNA “GIVE ME ALL YOUR LOVIN”, well we don’t expect Madge to Rap now do we, would you expect your mum to? The album has 2 mix’s, the album version as well as The LMFAO Party Rock Mix which is one of the added Deluxe Bonus Tracks on the album giving it a current 16
club edge feel. The track does remind me of a Cheerleader line-up but you don’t need to remind us we L.U.V you Madonna. Out of all the tracks on the album, not sure if this is the one I would have chosen to have released as the 1st single. Remember “Greta Garbo, Monroe, Dietrich, DiMaggio, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean, Grace Kelly; Harlow, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, Rita Hayworth, Lauren, Katherine, Lana, Bette Davis” well “SUPERSTAR” goes down this road again but with a different lineup, yes its very commercial, very Madge, its an upbeat track but not quite in the league of “Vogue”
Sung and written by one pop queen but heavily criticised by another at this years Golden Globe awards “MASTERPIECE” is one of the slower tracks on the album. I felt the award rightly went to Madge. It does have “Soundtrack” written all over it. The 2nd of the slower tracks to come from the Album is “FALLING FREE” this track does have a more haunting arrangement and is my preferred track of the two. There are 5 Deluxe Bonus tracks to listen out for. The up beat “BEAUTIFUL KILLER ” & “GIVE ME ALL YOUR LOVIN” The LMFAO Party Rock Mix. 2 slower tracks “I F**KED UP” with lyrics as “I Made a Mistake” Madge certainly did not with this track or with the production. It’s helped along with a catchy baseline. The 2nd more unusual sounding track “BEST FRIEND” threw me while on my journey.
I could quite easily picture Rihanna or Beyonce belting out “I Don’t Give A”. Until you hear the lyrics “There’s Only One Queen & That’s Madonna” you know Madge is making her claim on the crown with the help of up and coming pop princess Nicki Minaj. 17
ALL ABOARD THE UNDERWEAR TRAIN Addicted is Full Steam Ahead…
Randy Myers interviews ES underwear designer Eduardo Suñer on his new underwear collection, Addicted.
ES Collection’s latest line offers a reprieve to the fashion forward walking around with fat wallets yet empty bank accounts. Addicted by ES has all the style of sex appeal of the flagship brand, but at fashion friendly prices.
For me, “B-Day” is the most disappointing track on the album. I’m not sure where Madonna was going with this or what they had in mind when they arranged it. It just didn’t seem to work, it was un-classy Cheese. Both “SOME GIRLS” & “LOVE SPENT” on the album were a little non descript. The Album cover artwork is true “Classic Madonna” it reminds me of the days when I didn’t mind seeing Madge strutting around the stage and in videos in a leotard but that was back in 1986 & the True Blue days. 18
Verdict, It’s not as ground breaking or edgy as Madonna’s earlier work or what we have grown to possibly expect when Madonna repackages herself after a few years rest. However, It is the best album since “Ray Of Light” even though I was thrown a bit with the direction of some of the tracks. It’s got the thumbs up from me. We L.U.V Madonna just a little less of Leotard only dress code only please. 19
What inspired you to design men’s briefs? I started designing men´s swimwear and, in time, learned I could export those designs and convert them into underwear. What’s the most popular brief and cut in the Addicted line? The basic AD2 boxer. It´s extremely comfortable, fits great, and has some amazing color combinations. Young guys love them. Is Addicted the younger brother to ES? I guess you could call it that. ES collection is five and a half years old while Addicted is about to turn two. But in underwear years, ES is in it’s thirties while Addicted just graduated college. Addicted appears to be a more provocative active wear brand. Addicted is much more young, dynamic, powerful and strong. It’s for the more daring guy. Why did you create Addicted? ES is a high-end brand that uses expensive fabrics. It’s not affordable for everyone. We realized pretty quickly that the style and cuts also appealed to a demographic that were just starting out in life and didn’t have the disposable income yet to spend on briefs. We decided to create a second brand with a similar spirit and an equally strong identity that would be more affordable to young guys. Is Addicted a sports brand like ES? Not so much. It is more concept brand. What kind of man wears Addicted? I would like to think everyone but our main demographic tends to be young 20
men between 18 and 30. They’re athletic guys with a playful spirit. They’re fashion conscious which is something that kind of took us by surprise. It’s amazing how fashion conscious young guys are today! It used to be that girlfriends and wives bought their partner’s designer briefs. Now, guys have caught the underwear train. What new styles are you unveiling for Addicted? Our mesh collection has been a huge seller. It’s not your typical mesh. It’s a flex mesh that accentuates the curves in your body. This season, it isn’t so much about the cuts as it is about the colors. We’re introducing lots of new vibrant colors to the collection. The men’s underwear industry has exploded in recent years with tons of new designer brands. It´s a growing market. For so long, the men´s underwear industry was lacklustre with all brands looking the same. I am thrilled that so many new and great brands have come to the market offering color, comfort, sexiness, and now there are even eco friendly briefs.
Are young athletes moving away from baggy athletic wear to more fitted wear? I don’t think baggy athletic wear will ever die. It’s comfortable and when an athlete is training, comfort is key. It’s when you want to show off the results of your sweat and hard work that tighter athletic wear comes into play. Your campaigns seem to suggest that younger men have become more seductive. I think younger men have become more in touch with their sexuality. They’re more playful than past generations.
Briefs appear to be part of their arsenal to lure sex… is that fair to say? I don’t know about that. For the railway campaign, we just let the models have fun and be themselves. They were playing, being silly and yeah, I suppose feeling sexy, but not in a luring kind-of-way. To be honest with you, they seemed more interested in exploring themselves than with putting themselves out as bait for others. Your models are also less bulky than what we see in most campaigns… are
muscles out? Addicted is more about fashion. Our customer is athletic and fit, not bulky and buff. Sex sells underwear… does underwear buy sex? I never really thought of it that way but you know what? Maybe it does. There’s a reason all the best toys are sold in colorful boxes. It’s all about the pretty packaging, isn’t it? Death in Venice 2012 is the 100th anniversary of Death in Venice, one of the most influential publications in history to raise gay issues into public understanding. From the moment in 1912 when Der Tod in Venedig by Thomas Mann was issued, Death in Venice has had a life of its own. This has been clouded by endless controversy about whether Mann was a closeted homosexual or not and how closely this novella reflected actual events in Mann’s life. The gossip, proved true by Mann’s own diaries, did not prevent Mann from being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1929.
The trend among literary historians recently has been to deal separately with the tw o issues of Mann’s sexuality and the book’s stature. The story: A widowed German writer named von Aschenbach takes a vacation at a beachside hotel in Venice at the outbreak of a cholera epidemic. The middle-aged man becomes infatuated with the peerless beauty of a Polish boy who is staying at the hotel with his family. The writer becomes obsessed by the boy, stalking him, and fantasizing about him, drawing philosophical and literary comparisons which he begins to record and which re-ignite his flickering talent. Death in Venice has been called many things, but the conclusion that has stood the test of time is that Mann’s description of homo-erotic feelings is the most 22
passionate, empathetic, and compelling ever written. Since the field is crowded with contenders for that honor, Death in Venice was among the first and is still one of the best to describe what goes on when a man is impaled by his overwhelming infatuation. The reason that Death in Venice is important for us is that it has become the gay iconic story. Better than any other book of the 20th century, it portrays the fascination and fixation that gay men have for physical perfection. Peerless beauty ignites a fierce fire in us. The nexus of the erotic and the visual has seldom been more movingly portrayed. The inaccessibility and the deeply personal, highly individualistic, aspects of homo-erotic love in the first half of the last century are profoundly exposed. The angst and
tragedy of the experience of caring so deeply for another human being, especially when the emotional involvement is one-sided, rings universally true and probes at the pathos which has set it all up. Aschenbach is both empowered by his lonely love for lovely Tadzio and powerless over it. There has probably never been a gay male who has not at some point cried, “Why me?” Although few of us have cried as eloquently as von Aschenbach does. Death in Venice is significant to many others who are natural allies in our struggle for rights and dignity. After all these years, it is still being read and studied by thousands. It was not written by a gay man exclusively for gay men, and this is why it has been so valuable to our corporate coming out over the past century. There, for others to see, in generation after generation, is what so many of us are going through. For any of us, it may not be just like it was for von Aschenbach, but the rapture and impossibility of our experience has been something like Mann’s story, for many of us. It took a genius like Mann to put it into words. It is a classic, which as Charles Van Doren explained best, is work that is constantly in print. Death in Venice was almost immediately translated into English, and translated again by Stanley Appelbaum in 1995. But since 2005 we have a totally new translation by Michael Henry Heim, which is an improvement by softening the characterization and providing some of Mann’s humor we have been missing. Death in Venice was filmed in 1971, and was turned into an opera by gay composer Benjamin Britten in 1973. The story has been borrowed by others,
Thomas Mann never with much success, since they all failed to retain Mann’s dense and layered exploration of the theme of moving from rigid structure and rigorous restraint into artistic passion and danger, symbolized by von Aschenbach’s move from the Germanic north to the warm Mediterranean. 2012 would be a good year to read Death in Venice and help keep the classic working for us. 23

Music in Thailand the Sounds of Isaan
By Jai Pee
Isaan music is unique. It originates from the vast north-east of Thailand stretching from the Cambodian border near to towns such as Ubon Ratchatani, Surin and Si Sakhet across to western towns such as Phitsanulok and Petchaboon. It extends from the Mekong river in the north at Nongkai and descends to the borders of the central area at Ayyuddaya.
This is the largest of Thailand’s five regions and not surprisingly, has its own sub-culture of language, music, food and customs. The area is rural and the vast majority of people earn their living from the land. After long days toiling in the fields it is not surprising that its inhabitants spend evenings grouped together eating and making merry – and this is how Isaan music and its associated dancing originated – deep in the hearts and soul of the people and expressing their 30
hopes, their dreams, their trials and tribulations. The music is intoxicating. The captivating rhythms and incessantly repetitious phrases make an all-embracing and unique experience. Often the language is confusing and at times the lyrics appear to have more affinity with Lao than with Thailand, reflecting the strong historical ties between the two countries. But Isaan music lies at the heart of the Thai Kingdom and many fine performers sing nationwide to appreciative audienc-
es. Mor Lam (song doctor) is one of the names given to this dominant folk music of the Isaan region with its focus on the life of the rural poor. Rapid-fire, rhythmic vocals and a funky feel to the percussion characterize it. The lead singer is also called a mor lam. The origins are simple – when people were ill and suffering, groups of singers and dancers used to come to their bedside and perform in order to bring comfort to the patient, hence the term doctor.
This music is central to the country’s culture. Many younger Isaan people are unemployed and have difficulty finding work outside the planting/harvest periods and seek solace and opportunity in the towns and cities which is why clubs and bars that perpetuate the Isaan sound abound outside the boundaries of the region. Towns and cities such as Phuket/ Krabi, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Bangkok have dozens of restaurants, clubs and bars where Isaan music is played and enjoyed. In Bangkok, for example, the club that has become infamous is called Isaan Teud Teung and is situated on Thanon Phra Pin Klao some 2 kilometres from the great bridge of the same name. ‘Teud teung’ is the name of the drum that is a common feature of this music, giving the overall rhythmic dynamic that invites the listener to get up and dance! Nearly any taxi driver will know where it is and most will take you there eagerly but they might want to negotiate a non-metre charge if you take the taxi from areas such as Sukhumvit or Silom. Do not go before 9.00 pm – the place will be empty and do not expect anything luxurious – the main hall is spartan to say the least except for the multi-coloured stage which is decorated brightly. It is quite an experience – the toilets double as the artists changing room and there is non-stop live music apart from a short disco-type break around 11.00 pm. The singers and dancers are very talented, energetic and their costumes are attractive and colourful. There are many waiters on hand and the club serves cheap good quality food all evening. Getting a taxi home is never a problem as they line up outside. 31
Tawan Daeng (Red Sun) is another Bangkok club that features live Isaan music seven nights a week. Getting there is not easy but well worth it once you arrive. The staff and patrons are incredibly friendly and hospitable to foreign visitors, and are honoured that you are visiting for a genuine taste of Isaan culture. The club is owned by an Isaan group, including Niwat “Mo” Luanthaisong. Tawan Daeng is one of the finest experiences in Bangkok, and should not be missed but again do not get there until after 9.00 pm – at weekends, the club can be heaving after that time so use your judgement! It is located at 484 Pattanakarn Road, Bangkok 10250. It is not easy to reach – the best way is to take the SkyTrain/BTS, Sukhumvit line south to Phrom Phong, then a taxi to the club. Tawan Daeng has an outstanding group of inhouse musicians, dancers, and singers and an evening there is quite an experience above and beyond the normal tourist routines!

MENU
If you visit Isaan itself, then be sure to find a decent bar in any of the towns where there is live music – there are thousands of them spread around! Walk around the entertainment districts and when you hear the strains of appealing, lively inviting music, you will have found an Isaan club or bar! If you want to take some CDs home with you, then the best thing is to find a decent CD store (preferably in a shopping mall) and ask one of the assistants for a selection of Isaan music. Try any CD by the nationally popular Isaan singer Pai Pongsathorn which is Luuk Thung (country) style and like Mor Lam music, tends to focus on the poverty of the lives of Isaan people. For a mixture of Mor Lam and Luuk Thung music you might like to try any CD by the exciting guitarist and singer Pee Sadeuk. Once you have heard the sound you will be hooked. A friend of mine, a foreigner, said the music was stronger than any alcohol he had ever drunk – so prepare to become an addict as you enter into an area of Thai cultural life that few foreigner visitors ever experience!

The Face Saver
By James Barnes
After thirteen years of living in Thailand, I admit that I still chuckle at my own stupidity. I really don’t know how I have survived in this delightfully alien culture. It is like being on a different planet rather than just a different country, especially this business of saving face, so important to Thais.. Despite all my Herculean efforts to adapt, I am still presented with daily challenges that tell me I have much to learn. I reassure myself that this keeps me youthful!
I had been commissioned to write for a major broadcaster. Six-months on the peaceful beaches of Koh Samet was ideal to see the project through. After a while, I did go a little stir crazy even though the staff was great and my Thai companion was more than expert at ‘taking care’. There was a stack of tourist leaflets at the resort’s reception and a trip to a waterfall on the mainland seemed to fit the bill so I arranged for a driver to meet my speedboat at the pier in Ban Phe.
36
Mr Arrom drove like a Hollywood stuntman but he was reliable and assured me that he knew our destination. The hairraising trip to Chanthaburi took more than an hour (plus several years off my life expectancy) and when we swung onto a single carriage road that dwindled down to a dirt track, I figured we were near. The car crunched to a halt in a gravel lot and we started on a footpath with a cooler full of iced beers and chilled lunch. Arrom led the way. We came to a stop and he gestured towards a cliff. There was no sign of the tumbling waters pictured in the leaflet.
“Where’s the waterfall?” Arrom pointed at the dry cliff face again, this time with his chin. I studied the arid edifice. Not so much as a dribble. I shot an appealing glance at my Thai boyfriend and he and Arrom started chattering away at a rate that was far too fast for me to grasp. When their exchange ended, my dearest unrolled a reed mat and opened the cooler: it was time for lunch. Beer cans were popped open with a fizz and tasty delights shared out between us. I retrieved the leaflet from my pocket and slid it towards my love. “This is the waterfall,” he declared. He saw my confusion as I scanned the parched precipice once more. “But now is dry season... no water. Have to come back in rainy season,” he advised with a coy smile.
I laughed! What would you have done? My spontaneous hilarity was met with palpable relief by my friends. The picnic was wonderful. The drive back was just as scary as the drive there. That night, bed was filled with even more affection than usual. It seems that I was ‘a very clever foreigner!’ I had ‘understood’ that Arrom was saving my face by not remarking on how silly I was to visit a waterfall in the dry season. Forgotten Islands of the Andaman Sea By Adam Preston
Away from the main tourist centres, the Andaman coast has many small islands with bungalow accommodation and quiet unspoilt sandy beaches, perfect for couples looking for a romantic escape and a possible nightmare for single people looking for fun and action.
Off the north Andaman coast, close to the city of Ranong, are Koh Phayam and Koh Chang (not to be confused with the other Koh Chang on the border with Cambodia). Both can be reached by daily ferry service from Ranong. There are currently no airline services to Ranong so you would need to reach here from Phuket (about 3 hours drive north) or via road and rail links from Surat Thani or Chumpon. Moving down the Andaman coast, beyond Phuket and south of Koh Lanta are two islands so small and unspoiled that you will have difficulty in finding them on many maps. Koh Sukon and Koh Kradan both have bungalow resorts on them 38
and can be reached by boat services from Pak Meng Pier in Trang Province (by boat about one and half hour to Koh Kradan and one hour to Koh Sukorn). These sleepy islands have white sandy beaches and great snorkelling. Visit mid-week and out of Thailand’s public holidays and you will have the beach to yourselves. However be warned that during national holidays they will get busy and almost all accommodation will be fully booked in advance.
Trang does have an airport with flights from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport by Nok Air and new for 2012 flights via Suvarnabhumi Airport with Thai Air Asia. This would be one way to reach the southernmost Marine Park in Thailand, Tarutao and another would be via Hat Yai airport. No discussion of the Andaman coast can be complete without mentioning the Tarutao National Marine Park. Often described as the last true unspoiled wilderness of Thailand, this was the setting for the reality television series Survivor, Thailand, in 2002 and the Philippine version was also set here in 2008. The Park consists of over fifty islands but there is bun-
galow accommodation only on one Koh Lipe. Lipe is best reached from the small Trang Province town of Pak Barra, with one daily boat sailing all year round. Lipe has some great snorkelling directly off shore, within a 20 minute long tail boat ride. The iconic Thai vessels line up on the main beach waiting to take visitors to the best locations. Also good for scuba diving with about 8 to 10 dive sites within 30 minutes boat ride. You can see several videos of Tarutao Marine Park, Lipe Island and scuba diving on the You Tube site of Thailand’s Rainbow-Scuba & Tours company. Search You Tube Channel for username Scubachild. 39

Graham’s OUT in Thailand Camp comedian, Graham Norton’s outrageous chat show has been in the pink in the UK since 2007. Now you can see it in Thailand on BBC Entertainment (True Vision ch. 149) in the same week as first broadcast in Britain.
After a career in stand up comedy, cameo characters in TV sitcoms and movie appearances in ‘Stargay’, ‘Another Gay Movie’ and ‘I could never be your woman’, he has redefined the British appetite for camp humour with great dollops of double entendres in ‘The Graham Norton Show’. There is nothing new in the format: a monologue, a sofa full of star guests, a musical interlude and a whooping studio audience who, along with Norton’s rapid-fire rapier wit, produce a high energy show that never sags. It says a lot for the new British attitude that allows an openly gay man to have a flagship show on the BBC, though Graham does, sometimes, cross an unacceptable line. In March he hit the headlines 40
and was censured by the channel following some remarks that were judged to be anti lesbian. Rumour has it that his 2.5 M GBP annual contract will be cut by 20% when renewed, this year. Bearing the BBC hallmark does attract the biggest names to Norton’s sofa and his style elicits some scoops on a chat show where guests are unusually relaxed and off guard- maybe there is an alcoholic largesse present in the pre-show green room that erodes inhibitions. The real delight is witnessing the shock of US stars who are unaccustomed to the language laxity and freedom and filth of the humour. American screens would never, ever, allow it.
What a shame that we do not get to see Norton’s treatment of the annual kitsch-fest that is the Eurovision Song Contest. He noted that Iceland’s entry had “rooted around in a cupboard and found an old bridesmaid dress from 1987” and the Armenian singers were sporting traditional dress, “which would be true if you come from the village where Liberace is the mayor.” His comment “The bad news is you’re about to watch Albania. She’s only 17 so please bear that in mind. Where was her mother? Why didn’t she step in and say no?” which was made just before Kejsi Tola was set to take the stage, caused outrage. In 2011, he snarked that if Jedward’s entry into the competition that year won, the twins would never sleep again. 41

ACTING STRAIGHT : FARLEY GRANGER
By Brian Baxter
‘Granger refused to play the publicity or marrying game, common among gay and bi-sexual stars and earned a reputation for – in his own words - being a naughty boy’. The Guardian Obituary 29 March, 2011.
It’s unlikely that Hollywood has boasted a prettier young actor, excepting perhaps Brandon de Wilde, or a more handsome leading man than Farley Granger, who seemed early in his career to be destined for stardom. Aged just 18 he made his screen debut as a Russian soldier, with blond curly hair, in Lewis Milestone’s The North Star (1943). The same director then cast him as an American soldier in another war movie, which was prescient since the real war caught up with him and propelled him into military service. A combination of bad luck, his sexuality and a commendable refusal to conform made for a somewhat rocky career. When Granger wrote his autobiography in 2007 (with his long term partner Robert Calhoun) succinctly called Count Me Out – indicating his dismissal of Hollywood pressures. He was, after all, not the marrying kind. Granger seemed destined for the limelight, acting first as a five year old and 42
adopting his mother’s maiden name, working in Los Angeles theatres, where his ravishing looks and attractive voice whisked him those few miles to Hollywood. After the false war time start it took him a while to get re-established until the maverick director Nicholas Ray cast him as the lead in the superb They Live by Night (1947), playing an ill-fated young man on the run from the police. Sadly, Howard Hughes the megalomaniacal studio boss at RKO loathed the down beat movie and held it up for a year, later releasing it without fanfare. A
couple of lousy films had followed and by 1948 Granger’s career had stalled. Then along came Hitchcock, who cast him as Philip, one of the two gay students, in Rope. Based on Patrick Hamilton’s play and indebted to the infamous Leopold –Loeb case where two wealthy youngsters murdered a boy for the ‘experience’, this co-starred another gay actor John Dall and was co-adapted by the gay writer Arthur Laurents. There is even the suggestion that the student’s teacher (James Stewart) is gay. The masterly film, shot in 10 minute takes and confined to two rooms, was not a popular success. But Hitch liked Granger enough to reward him with the lead as Guy in Strangers on A Train (1951). That film too had a less overt gay sub text (it was from a novel by Patricia Highsmith) in that the other protagonist, Bruno, is a mother-fixated, flamboyant playboy who happily murders Guy’s estranged wife and expects payment in kind with the murder of Bruno’s domineering father. The film was a success and Granger equips himself well as the handsome tennis player, at the mercy of Bruno’s madness. A few decent films followed, but nothing
exceptional until 1954 when Italy’s premier gay director Luchino Visconti summoned him to Europe for the lead in the lavish period drama, Senso. Granger took the lead as the dashing Austrian officer in one of the director’s best films. The freedom which Europe offered and working with Visconti – famous for nurturing such actors as Helmut Berger, Alain Delon, Dirk Bogarde and Burt Lancaster - enticed Granger to buy a home there and he made many films in Italy, especially during the 1970s. Much of his other work was in television series as a guest star or on stage in classics such as The Seagull and Hedda Gabler and memorably in the television version of The Heiress. He would turn up in dozens of productions between 1950 and 1990 but made no secret of his preference for the theatre. His last scheduled appearance was to have been in the once controversial play Demi –Monde by Noel Coward in a London revival, but he withdrew after problems with his lines and remained a spectator from then on, while working on his life story. His partner died in 2008 and Granger followed three years later, aged 85. 43
ASK KA DARI
you the truth, I had exactly the same dream last night—probably because of the huge steak I finished eating about 15 minutes before I went to bed. Try a salad two hours before bedtime and see if your dreams improve. Obviously you have some issues to deal with about your dead father, rusty screen doors and cowboys. Get some help. Dear Darika: Every month we look forward to your insightful columns. Your wisdom and sound counsel are the best.
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com
Dear Darika, I had the strangest dream last night. My mom, dad, Aunt Betty and I were traveling through Montana. I have never been there and father has been dead for 20 years. We went to an odd restaurant with a rusty screen door where I ordered a big steak. Before it was served, two policemen dressed as cowboys handed me a stack of yellowing papers and said I was under arrest for stealing headstones from cemeteries. What does this really mean? I have asked our editor to publish your question just to prove to our readers how much idiotic crap people send Darika via the miracle of email. To tell 44
But what about you, Darika? What are your fantasies and how do you achieve them? What are your fetishes? Do you still visit places where people wear towels? Do you still frequent go-go bars to acquire real flesh? Do you still hang around male restrooms late at night to solicit blow jobs? How old are you? And can you still get it up? These are the questions that we demand answers to. Go on, Darika. Let it all out. Thank you. Darika is blushing. Actually, I have a real job. I am a Stanford MBA who runs a company with operations in nine countries. Stanford MBAs do not have fantasies. (We have objectives.) I work 14/7, am a trained chef, a prolific author, and somewhat involved in technology and television. I bake every weekend. I am single and love it. I have never hung around toilets and have never been to Lumpini Park after dark. I take friends (most often women) to go-go shows when they visit from abroad, but never on my own. Boooor-
ing. I occasionally wear a towel around the house. Normally I prefer a sarong. I’m 61 and, sadly, fully functional. There seems to be more “flesh” than I really need ringing my doorbell when I least expect or want it. That is as much as you need to know about my quiet, uneventful life. If you do not know Darika’s fetishes by now (taxi drivers, policemen in uniform, and expensive plus-size lingerie) you have not been reading this column very religiously. Please do not annoy me or our esteemed editor again with your careless punctuation.
English. I would never think of trying to swindle you in any of the 520 languages spoken in Nigeria. A hysterectomy is usually a very radical solution for uterine fibroids, which are more uncommon among student-age women than Darika winning the SuperLotto. National Health Care in the UK usually pays for such things, so nobody is asking you for cash, particularly in dollars. Besides, Desdemona, my female Pekingese, is going through menopause and dog psychiatry here is very, very expensive. So forget the loan.
Darika, How are you? I am presently in London to be with my cousin, whom is a student here. She’s suffering from a critical uterine fibroid and must undergo a hysterectomy. The news of her illness arrived to me as an emergency and that she needs family support to keep her going, I hope you understand my plight and pardon me. I traveled with little money due to the short time I had to prepare for this trip. Could you loan me about $2,700 to sort-out my Cousin’s bills, the hospital is demanding for a deposit of $1500 before they will implement the surgery,. I’ll reimburse you at my return. Sir, If I were the kind of Catholic nun I had in school, I would beat your hands bloody with my giant ruler for your moronic English. If you are going to attempt to defraud people, at least do us the courtesy of doing so in proper 45

Massage health benefits By Doc John
A soothing massage can help you unwind, but it has other health benefits (and risks) too. Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage therapists use their hands and fingers for massage but may also use forearms, elbows and feet. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure techniques. Types of Massage Swedish: this is a gentle massage using long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help you relax. Deep-tissue: this technique uses slower, more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissues to help with muscle damage from injuries. Sports: similar to Swedish massage but is geared toward sports people to help prevent or treat injuries. Thai: involves stretching and deep massage, performed on the floor in comfortable loose pajama to aid movement. There are no oils or lotions are used, it can be a little strenuous. Benefits of massage Some studies have found massage helpful for: • Stress relief • Managing anxiety and depression • Pain
• Stiffness • Blood pressure control • Sports-related injuries • Boosting immunity • Cancer treatment Some people enjoy massage because it involves caring, comfort and a connection with the massage therapist. Despite its benefits, massage isn’t meant as a replacement for regular medical care. Risks of massage Massage is generally safe as long as it’s done by a trained massage therapist. But massage isn’t appropriate for everyone. Discuss massage with your doctor first in cases of: • Unexplained pain or other symptoms • Burns or open wounds • Cancer • Blood clots • Fractures • Rheumatoid arthritis • Severe osteoporosis Rarely massage can cause: • Internal bleeding • Nerve damage • Temporary paralysis • Allergic reactions to massage oils or lotions Massage can be useful to help you take charge of your well-being and stress reliever. You can learn to do self-massage or to massage with a partner.

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas which include Lomchoey Massage and The Prince’s Men’s Spa is the relaxed atmosphere. Balcony Pub is a popular watering hole and if meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar. Up2 Salon and Cutey & Beauty will make you beautiful! Bangkok Babylon is a popular landmark and nightowls party at DJ Station. The Malaysia Hotel is also a favourite. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse, coming to Bangkok soon.
These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! Visit The Podology Centre for a full range of medical footcare.
College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road.

OUT in Koh Samui J
Jungle covered craggy hills, roads weaving through lush coconut plantations, huge trees, orchids, butterflies, quiet beaches, fresh local fruits. Koh Samui is the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys, especially couples who kick back, recharge in spas or health resorts, lounge around their villa pool, take long beach walks, sip a cocktail or three in a rustic beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit with the local guys.
Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening with gay bars, disco, cabaret, island tours and as the regional spa capital, massage and body treatments. The center of gay day/ nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end opposite Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club a well-established gay only spa for a range of quality massage techniques and body treatments. In South Chaweng, opposite the Centara Resort is Tropical Fah Samui for massage, wellness treatments and drinks also Rainbow Scuba & Tour for a paradise island adventure while Mekkala Men Spa opposite Trade Winds promise to rejuvenate you. Close to bar Solo in central Chaweng K Club for gay drinks, 58
massage and take away staff. From midnight to 2 pm + Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul disco/bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music and mixed crowds. Further out of Chaweng Tropical Garden Lounge Resort and Fisherman’s Village in Bo Phut are favourites, the original Mekkala Men Spa is near Big C. Five Islands Restaurant at Baan Taling Ngam is a great get away. For an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at gay venues or ask your hotel for a copy. OUT in Chiang Mai C
Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom is renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations.
Try the superb La Fourchette and Chez Marco (both French) and Prego (Italian & Thai) restaurants inside the moated, old city walls and the inviting Yokka Dok bar/ restaurant/. Mandalay Disco is a favourite with night owls. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Circle Pub has hunky guys on stage. Gemini Massage has regular promotions and is recommended. Ram Coffee & Bar is set on the river, close to the Nawarat Bridge. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars. Check out Sangdee Gallery & Cafe and on Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Soho Bar and Guesthouse who serve 62
incomparable New Orleans food. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service, as well as the new Mansfield Residence. Club M Karaoke is a favourite. Santitham is not far away, with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more go to The Blues Club. In San Sai you will find The Podology Centre, specialists in medical foot care. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings, www.radchada.com and www.out-in-thailand.com

Welcome to the Sundowners Group
OUT in Phuket
All are Central and Convenient to the Phuket Paradise Complex Gay Scene
P
Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms. The disco at Boat Bar is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike. 70
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Phuket Travel Company, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. CC Bloom’s Hotel and Centara Grand Beach Resort are close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www. out-in-thailand.com

In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. Pattaya Hotmale is your one-stop info and cafe centre. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Spilia Karaoke at Ganymede Hotel & Sauna and P2 Lounge are worth a visit. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the luxurious Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. 78
In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar and New Sawadee Boys are popular and very friendly venues. For a massage go to Relax at Me 1 & 2 , both located on South Pattaya Road. Get away to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.outin-thailand.com
