The superspy looked edgy, impatient. “We need you in Bangkok, 007- something’s come up.” “But I’m just about to save the world from that Eurozone plot...” “I’m pulling you off Bond. I want you to drop everything.” Bond raised a quizzical eyebrow. “009 has gone missing. Last seen here,” M tapped her wall screen, which instantly displayed a map of the Thai capital. “He was taking some time out and his homing device tracks him to The Prince Men’s Spa. It’s a brand new business just 5 minutes from Silom. High profile. 34 luxury rooms, gym, bar and a small army of cherry picked masseurs, all with a deft touch and all deadly handsome. The Prince is all out and open- even has a website- www.theprincebkk.com . 009 has been there for nearly a week with no word.”

“You think he’s been rubbed out?” “We suspect that he has fallen victim of The Pleasure Principle.” “That was a CIA project back in the cold war. Take a man past the extreme point of ecstasy and render him useless,” said Bond. “Yes, abandoned because too many Presidents wanted to try it out on themselves. Something big is going down in Bangkok, Bond, and I want you to get to the bottom of it.” “009 and I worked together in the navy...” “I know Bond,” she interrupted, “On that sub up the north-west passage. You two were very close. You’re on the next flight to Bangkok. Get to Q for your equipment first.” 9

“Now, pay attention 007,” said Q, sternly as he produced a pair of violet coloured linen trousers from an attaché case and asked, “What sort of underwear do your prefer?” “I usually go commando!” Bond confided with a wry smile. “I thought so. Now when you’re on the job, wear these. A small tug on the zipper activates some tiny gas canisters concealed in the inseams and a latex, selflubricating sheath will be deployed to protect your weapon. This time it’s safety first Bond.” “So you think I could come to a sticky end?” Q ignored him and dangled a phallic key fob. “This clips onto your belt loop. It’s an all purpose communicator. Talk into the head and we’ll hear you. The tiny slit in the end houses a webcam that patches into the nearest wireless connection and sends pictures back here.” “My very own dick-ta-phone.” “Oh, do grow up 007!” 10

James Bond stepped into the arrivals hall at Suvarnabhumi, feeling a little self-conscious in his lurid pants but he was ready for action. He scanned about, looking for his contact. Among the line of drivers was a curious looking fellow holding a large gin and tonic in one hand and a large card aloft that read, ‘OO7’, in the other. The secret agent walked swiftly over to the man and tore the sign from him. “I’m supposed to be undercover, you fool. My name is Bond. James Bond.” “And my name is Barnes. James Barnes. Sorry old thing. I’m your contact. The car’s outside. Fancy a gin?” They weaved through the Bangkok traffic at an alarming speed. “Thought you’d want to get straight down to it,” said Barnes. “Of course,” Bond replied, “Tell me about The Prince.” “I hear it is sumptuous! Ab fab, darling! Like a movie set. I run a magazine here and sent a reporter to review the place. He’s not filed his copy yet- bit funny, he never misses a deadline... gin for you?” he said, steering with his teeth and pouring chilled Bombay Sapphire from a flask. The car screeched to a halt in the large car park of The Prince Men’s Spa. This was no run-of-the-mill establishment. Spotlit and chic, it was a modernist, lowrise building, the stepped entrance was flanked by pools and fountains- the feel was an efficient welcome. “You coming?” enquired Bond as he stepped from the car. “Be back later,” called Barnes as the car roared off, spilling gin in its wake. The receptionist was a handsome young man who greeted Bond with an inscrutable smile. 11

“My name is Bond. James Bond.” “Ah, we’ve been expecting you Mr Bond. Welcome to The Prince.” was the reply. “But I made no appointment...” “Please, sit down,” said the young man, gesturing to a luxurious leather sofa in the adjoining lounge, “Can I get you a drink? We have it all sir, anything you want.” As his drink was being prepared, Bond noted the provocative but classy objets d’art that decorated the place and gazed through the huge glass wall that showed a fully equipped gymnasium filled with fully equipped young men. They were working out and it seemed to Bond that they were all unusually well developed and aware of his eyes on their perfectly formed bodies. “You can choose your masseur, Sir,” said the attendant as the drink was served. “I think I’m man enough for two,” said

Bond, “That one and that one!” They were soon in a bedroom that would put most 5 star hotel suites to shame. Sitting room, Jacuzzi and big bed. Soft 12

Thai music filled his ears and intoxicating aromas filled his nose. Mesmerised and before he knew it, Bond was on the mattress and as soon as he had deployed his in-trouser gadget, the two gorgeous Thais guys were all over him. They made the geishas in ‘You Only F**k Twice’ seem like dullards. It was the best massage he had ever had. Exhausted yet strangely invigorated, Bond felt hungry. “We serve Thai and Western food!” they chorused, merrily, “Eat here or by our pool in the tropical garden.” Bond chose the latter and it was here that he saw a familiar, friendly face. “009!” he ejaculated, “And looking better than I have ever seen you.” “Oh yes,” said 009, “I knew that M would send you so I tipped off reception. I’m here to stay. They do a 24 hour outcall service but the price is so good I decided to book into one of their overnight

rooms. Sod this spying lark!” Just then, James Barnes appeared by the pool, gin and tonic in hand. “Thought you might like a lift to your hotel, Mr Bond.”

“No, thank you Mr Barnes, I’m staying here,” he said unclipping his communicator from his waistband and speaking into the head, “I think I’ll be some time- enjoy the show, London, and get envious! Are you staying too, James?” “No, no, James. Another couple of gins, a quick massage and I’ve got a spy story to write...”

BANGKOK OFF THE GRID Author Andrew Douglas speaks to James Barnes about the impetus behind his new and very different guidebook, “Bangkok Off the Grid: The kitsch, the cool and the bizarre”.

One of my favourite Bangkok experiences was probably interviewing Gene Kasidit for the book. It was so funny to be sitting back on Khao San Road, this time with a glamazon transvestite Thai rock star sipping out of a straw in a bucket. The Thai people were freaking out to see a celebrity, the clueless Brit backpacker boys were just freaking out to see their

‘people need to know about this place. there is nowhere else like it’ Andrew was born in 1977 in Melbourne, Australia and worked as a freelance journalist and teacher across much of Asia. “In the last decade I have lived in Japan (twice), been deported from Korea, studied as an exchange student in Beijing and fallen in love (of course) with Thailand. I currently live in Hong Kong and this is my first book. My first experience of Thailand was arriving in Bangkok on the last stop of a roundthe-world trip as a twenty one year old, fairly green backpacker. I remember being terrified by it. It seemed so alien and uncompromising, it smelled different, the city was huge, flat and feature14

less and I felt like I was at risk of getting horribly lost and ...disappearing. I spent an uneasy few days on Khao San Road and flew out.”

But when he returned, more than ten years later, he instantly fell in love with the place. “The same things that had scared me before now seemed so exciting - full of surprises and new things to explore. Since then I have returned fifteen times, living in the city for most of 2011 to write the book. I feel now that Bangkok is a part of my life I could not live without.”

“I remember walking down Soi Twilight”, at the “rear” of the Silom gayberhood, as he describes it in the book. “There was a traditional spirit house altar and on it some offerings; some incense, an open bottle of Fanta and a gay porn magazine. I guess someone thought the spirit was thirsty…and horny”, he laughs. “That was one of those moments when I just thought, ‘people need to know

about this place. There is nowhere else like it’, “I get bored easily ” he continues. “But Bangkok never bores me”. I love to explore, and for people like me, Bangkok is a paradise. You never know what is around the corner. A six-legged crocodile, a Hindu shrine in a gay bar, a haunted house shopping mall….literally, you just never know”. And true enough, all of these examples are in the book. “Bangkok Off the Grid” steers clear of the usual tourist targets to focus on more offbeat sights, as well as interviewing some of Bangkok’s colourful characters and exploring its strangest stories. “Body snatchers, diamond heists, gruesome murders, weird plastic surgery…Bangkok has it all!” he laughs. “I heard some backpackers on Khao San Road once, droning on. They were complaining about Bangkok, saying ‘its just another big city…’ But I have never understood that. What other big city is anything like this?” For the book, he set about exploring the sides of Bangkok many tourists (and residents) never see, from a colossal temple in the outer suburbs shaped like a UFO to biker bars, a giant three headed elephant and a bizarre vintage furniture store. 15

One of his favourite discoveries was an enormous reclining Buddha in the outer suburb of Bang Phlii. Visitors can climb inside to touch the Buddha’s golden spleen. “So many of these places are just incredible”, he says. “But for some reason, people do not know about them. They do Chatuchak and the Grand Palace and think they have done Bangkok”.

Some of the places in the book are hard to get to and little-known to non-Thais like the grotesque “hell temple” of Wat Phuet Udom with its statues of ninja turtles, or a hippie squat and art commune in Pinklao. “I thought it was important to put in a Thai language address guide, for taxi drivers”, Andrew Douglas says. “Otherwise some of these places would remain out of reach. They are not the kind of places you can find in standard guidebooks, after all”. The book includes spectacular urban ruins, shrines built out of oyster shells and buffalo bones, graveyards, Thai voodoo and an introduction to the city’s vibrant contemporary subcultures: its most interesting modern architecture, offbeat bars and nightclubs, its Japanese and Arab enclaves, alternative rock scene and of course, its gay bars.

“Gay life is so interwoven with everyday life in Bangkok. I didn’t really see how I could write about the city without including it. And anyway, a lot of the gay culture in Bangkok is really interesting in itself. In the book he describes the lesser-known local gay neighbourhoods of Or To Kor and Lamsalee and even interviews the founder of the Thailand Rainbow Archives project for preserving Thai gay history, as well as flamboyant cross-dressing Thai rock star Gene Kasidit. “Gene was great”, he enthuses. “This shock-blonde, tattooed rock star in a dress- one of the things he said really struck me. “Bangkok doesn’t make sense”, he said, “but neither do I!” Andrew Douglas smiles. “And isn’t that what makes it all so exciting?” “Bangkok Off the Grid: The Kitsch, the Cool and the Bizarre” is available for order from order@averse-publishing.com for €11.99 or at Asia books.

Peua Chiwit

In the third of a series of articles on music in Thailand, musicologist Jai Pee examines the far more introspective and appealing music known as “Peua Chiwit” which literally translates as ‘Music for Life’ or more colloquially ‘folky/ conscience music’. This is definitely the stuff to have on your iPod by the pool as you relax under the umbrella sipping an exotic cocktail!

The nearest equivalent of this style of music in western countries would be the folksy-type music that contains a series of messages – so ‘music for life’ gives us a wonderful insight into Thai living that few other genres of music can provide. The great exponents of ‘peua chiwit’ are living legends on the Thai music scene with a proliferation of CD’s and karaoke DVDs on sale in retail outlets. The music itself has evolved from the simple guitar accompanied by the need for selfexpression – so the words invariably reflect issues from ordinary life, many of them pricking the conscience or providing food for thought and meditation. The songs themselves were often simple in conception and just acoustic, but as tech20

nology has expanded so has the genre evolved – many of the solo singers now have backing groups, but these are usually restricted to a quartet or quintet so that the essence of the music is not lost – but the depth and overall sound are enhanced.

One of the greatest exponents in this field is Pongsit Kampee. He has released dozens of albums, many of which celebrate important anniversaries such as 15 or 20 years on the road. The double album celebrating 15 years is truly wonderful – some of his greatest songs are there – such as ‘Kit teung’ (I miss you), ‘Mae’ (mother), ‘Ma tam sanya’ (my promise) or ‘Yak keun sawan’ (I want to go to heaven). There is also a 3-disc set ‘The Best of Kampee’ available on AKP AGCD-003. Phongthep Gradonchamnan is another giant figure – he has released hundreds of tracks over the years and is as popular as ever. His music tends to be a little ‘heavier’ but is none the less very enjoyable. Nga Karawan is like a father figure in the world of ‘peua chiwit’. Over the years this prolific artist written hundreds of songs – his karaoke DVD double album contains some glorious yet more popular songs ‘Rak khun tammai?’ (why do I love you?) as well as the lyrical anti-

war song ‘Anon’ on the Rose label with a bar code 8 852758 028926. One way to capture all three artists is to buy one of their double albums that contains selections of their most famous tracks – available in karaoke or plain CD format, the two albums contain 24 superb tracks that make memorable listening, the karaoke version having the bar codes: 8 850 107044634 (volume 1) and 8 850 107 044641 (volume 2) I am sure that is enough for starters! I find this aspect of Thai music somewhat curious – almost like sitting listening to Tom Paxton, early Dylan or Phil Ochs – but with that unique Thai flavour that makes it so appealing. This music is very popular in many restaurants and bars and often, you will see some of Thailand’s superstars of this genre suddenly strolling on to the stage and making an impromptu appearance. Portrait of an Artist James Mitchell is the good looking and exciting freelance fashion photographer and visual artist who is set to take Thailand by storm with his first exhibition in Chiang Mai’s Sangdee gallery this month. He spoke to James Barnes about his life and work.

The 26-year-old Englishman has piercing ice blue eyes, soft blond hair and a razor blade smile. He was born in London but grew up in the bucolic beauty of Devon. Now his home is in Thailand. He is fizzing with enthusiasm as he talks about developing his signature style while studying at the London College of Fashion. “I do have an individual approach- a bit of a black sheep- I organised the lighting, make up and was art director and stylist at shoots.” 22

He cut his teeth at London Fashion Week, working for Jasmine Di Milo, daughter of Harrod’s owner Mohamed Al Fayed, on a luxury luggage shoot. There was also a prestigious Carnaby Street exhibition. He is determined to use his wealth of experience to carve a creative career for himself in Asia. “I really love Thailand and plan to stay,” he confides, flashing a bright smile.

His work is sexy, vibrant and features a strong colour palette. He describes it as, ‘Hyper Reality’ and quotes Jean Baudrillard’s book, ‘Simulacra and Simulations’ which explores the nature of reality and information in a post modern technological civilization. “I think this can be described as a Dystopian Utopia!”, says James, who will use this as the theme for his upcoming exhibition which is called, ‘Simulacra’. Clearly, now is the time for this child of the digital generation to examine the blurring line between that which is real and virtual.

“Photography is open to everyone today,” he says, “we can all record our own personal history, which will be an important document for the future.” James says that he has an affinity with Asian culture but finds the contrast to his European homeland exciting and intoxicating. “The colours, the smells, the nightlife and even people going about their day to day routines, all inspire me.” 23

James says that he always knew that he was gay: “I was a camp child! There are home movies that show me flapping my hands about and I never really had to come out. It was obvious and easy so there was no conversation about it that I can remember. It did help that my Mum’s brother is gay.” James is a big fan of Thai men, “They are so sexy! The full lips,

Was John Carter of Mars, Gay?

Was John Carter of Mars gay? Was Tarzan? Was Edgar Rice Burroughs? Is Taylor Kitsch? Interested gays want to know. Apparently, a lot of others want to know, too, judging by the young, female sounding names on the blogs talking about these things.

This is the 100th anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first published writing, “A Princess of Mars”, and it is the year of the release, finally, of “John Carter” which is Disney’s title for that same story. More about that later, but first, why do gays care about whether these guys are gay? Why do we like to think our superheroes are gay?

These characters inevitably have a secret life that clouds their identities and enhances their powers while (somewhat like certain drugs) it seems to diminish their libidos, based on the scarcity of their female romantic entanglements. We know gay guys like that.

If these superheroes have close friends, they are likely to be younger buddies or older mentors who are openly gay or suspiciously near. I personally was not surprised when J.R. Rowling said in Carnegie Hall that she had always thought of Albus Dumbledor as gay. I wonder if Harry Potter knew that. I am sure Robin had the goods on Bruce Wayne. And what about Spiderman, hmmm? So, I repeat, was John Carter gay? Edgar Rice Burroughs began his writing career with the Martian tale, which was published in All-Story magazine in 1912. That was the first of what amounted to 11 books about the hero, John Carter of Mars. The John Carter and Tarzan books sold more than 100 million copies, making Burroughs one of the mostread authors of the 20th century. Burroughs borrowed his idea about Mars from the astronomer Percival Lowell’s theories of the canals of Mars, which were at the height of popularity in 1911. In the 1930s, Walt Disney talked to Burroughs about turning the pulp books into a movie, but it did not happen until this year. It was Burroughs’ expressed intent, often reiterated, and resolutely defended by his family who own the copyrights and trademarks, that the stories are meant to promote morality, honour and all those good things. We gays and lesbians know those are code words that still exclude us. So, no, the gentleman from Virginia, John Carter of Mars, was not gay. And, sigh, Taylor Kitsch isn’t either. 31

Scuba Divingan Adventure in Thailand

Experienced scuba divers come from all over the world to enjoy the diverse marine life, pristine coral reefs and calm, clear waters of Thailand. For others, diving is something they “fall into” by chance, while on holiday. Perhaps they are bored sunning themselves on the beach, maybe they have just finished their book and are looking to pass away the day. It is possible that a warm smile from a handsome scuba instructor sitting outside his shop will entice people to try something new… Scuba stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus and there are many agencies that teach scuba diving. The most internationally recognised, with the highest number of certifications, is PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). Their annual certifications probably equal all the other agencies 34

put together and their brand image is strong. However, this is not to say the PADI course is any more valid than others taught by agencies like SSI, NAUI, and the myriad of small European scuba agencies. A person certified by an agency will be recognised by any dive tour operator and allow the holder to go diving with them. Some people come to Thailand to learn scuba diving but others need a quick and easy introduction or gentle encouragement before taking the big plunge and investing in a three or four day scuba course. Most training agencies allow people to make a supervised scuba dive to depths of 10-12 meters accompanied by a professionally trained instructor. In this way, all of the fun and excitement of scuba diving can be experienced in a single day.

The calm clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand are an ideal location for novices to try scuba diving as well as having plenty to offer the experienced diver. A love of nature and the weird and wonderful underwater marine life is a major attraction. You will see more creatures in a one-hour scuba dive than a one day African Safari. The underwater “landscape” is fascinating and has been the inspiration for artists and moviemakers for decades. The underwater world is like a Hollywood movie- ‘Finding Nemo’

and ‘Little Mermaid’ of course but what about ‘Aliens’ or ‘Predator’…? Scuba diving is fantastic fun and has a sublime sense of freedom, of floating like an astronaut in space. With practise, the scuba diver learns to do what the astronaut can never do– control his position by using his breath. A deep inhalation makes the body rise, exhale and the body falls– but never hold your breath! Want to know why? Ask at your nearest scuba-training agency! 35

Cop out? It is more than four decades since cowboys and indians ruled the small screen, replaced by cops and robbers. BBC Entertainment (True Vision ch.149) gives us Wallander, played by Larry Olivier wannabe and big gun, Kenneth Branagh.

Kurt Wallander has issues. As a young cop, he was nearly killed when a drunk stabbed him. His wife left him. He has a difficult relationship with his rebellious only child, who barely survived a suicide attempt when she was fifteen. He also had issues with his late father, an artist who painted the same landscape 7,000 times. He has few close friends and is known for his less-than-desirable lifestyle. He frequently regards the crimes he investigates on a very personal level, throwing himself into catching criminals 36

and going against the orders of his superiors. He is disillusioned with his work, and often wonders whether he should have become a police officer at all. He was once falsely sued for police brutality, and still lives with the guilt of having shot and killed a man, which drove him into depression and nearly led to his resignation. His relationships with his colleagues are tentative; they are alternately amazed by his intellect and frustrated by his brusque banter and terrorizing tactics.

In other words, Wallander conforms to the identi-kit picture of successful small screen sleuths. His clothes are as crumpled as Colombo’s coat. His face looks like your bed after a night of rough trade. His bed is pristine- he never uses it- and he is woken several times per episode as he kips in a chair by the most irritating ringtone known to man. He doesn’t say much. Mostly he sulks or scowls, and just like you, dear reader, he always gets his man.

The BBC has spent a small fortune on this series. Sumptuously shot on Swedish location with production values of which to be proud, the ponderous pace suggests a movie sized feast and regularly leads to an exciting denouement. One can only guess at the fortune that Branagh has been paid to lower himself to the telly level and the fortune the BBC is raking in through overseas sales in a cynical bid to cash in what yet another ‘safe bet’. Another BBC cop out. 37

Acting Straight:Ernest Thesiger

There is no actor less suited to the title of this series: no one who could claim to be more flamboyant, more given to outrage than Ernest Thesiger. From the green painted toe nails to the bouffant hair, by way of the doe skin shorts riding just above his bony knees he was the epitome of camp.

Mary’s doll’s house and a book on embroidery - his abiding passion, along with Chinese painting. He was married out of convenience and once said that he had painted his wife’s bedroom ceiling, “To make up for my frequent absences”. He also published an autobiography, announcing it beforehand, saying that it would cost 50 pounds to be included and 75 to be left out of it.

He would, given the chance, (which he took often) utter bon mots, flutter eyelids, raise eyebrow, flap wrists and deliver lines with impeccable timing, such as when cosying up to Frankenstein’s monster: “ Have a cigar, they are my only weakness” or when throwing flowers into a roaring fire in The Old Dark House remarking, “My sister was on the point of arranging these”. His legacy was some 60 films, innumerable stage roles, the tapestries to Queen 38

He was high camp, high voiced, high and mighty and high born (grandson to Lord Chelmsford and to a Viceroy of India) but he liked rough trade and once strewed the entrance to a very grand London hotel with flowers in homage to a handsome young doorman. He modeled many of his character roles on Queen Mary’s regal bearing, but could cut through such extravagance with portraits of venality such as the ruthless businessman in The Man in the White Suit. However, he specialised in upper crust characters, Earls, Dukes, judges and the like.

Thesiger designed his own colourful clothes and loved to shock. A favourite trick at dinner parties was to unbutton his shirt to show a guest his beautiful pearl necklace, but he remained greatly prized as a guest and as a friend for his kindness and wit. He was a close friend of England’s premier novelist of the 20th century, Ivy Compton- Burnett, and supportive of her in some lonely less happy times.

Sadly, Whale fell on hard times and out of work and committed suicide in 1987 as an alternative to “old age, illness and pain”, not to say comparative poverty. But at his peak he had the sense to cast perfectly and ‘The Bride’ boasts Thesiger, Agnes Moorhead with Boris Karloff as the monster. Quite what 1930s Hollywood made of Thesiger is open to speculation, but his performance led to regular work there and on Broadway as well as in the U.K. Films included Henry V and Sons and Lovers. Possibly his style was better suited to the stage, although he knew how to control excesses - at least on the screen. He admitted to being drawn to what he described as “the working class”, but one suspects that was as a welcome antidote to his normal environment, in the salons of the wealthy of a by-gone age.

He came to notice in the cinema when his long running theatre success, aptly called A Bit of Fluff, was filmed. But he will always be remembered as Dr.Pretorius in the minor masterpiece, The Bride of Frankenstein. James Whale, one of the first openly gay directors, who had come to Hollywood via the English theatre and knew the actor, made this classic horror movie. He had cast him in the superb ‘Dark House’ several years before. Whale, who made many other fine films such as The Invisible Man and Show Boat, was depicted by Ian McKellan in the biopic Gods and Monsters, which starred a youthful and, then, slim Brendan Fraser.

He chose to stay in London during the war, rather than work in the U.S.A. like many fellow artists, and joined the Home Guard. He died on the eve of his 82nd birthday, upstaging even himself. His abiding legacy was to help pave the way for the many gay actors in the future who would more readily out themselves thanks to his existence.

Darika loathes children and thinks you are noble and brave to want to adopt. My legal experts advise that you are in a fuzzy grey area, as so many things are in the Thailand. Yours would be a “domestic adoption” as you are living here. Adoptive parent(s) must be at least 25 years old and at least ten years older than the child. Any prospective adoptive parent must have a legal spouse. However, this apparently does not apply to Thai applicants. “A” certainly qualifies and a case can be made that you are in a committed relationship that is recognized under Austrian law. The fact that “O” has been in Thailand for five years and presumably has a work permit meets a major requirement for foreigners. Nevertheless, I suspect this will be difficult. The best “friend” I can think of is Dr. Prakong Vithayasai at Support the Children Foundation Chiang Mai. She and her husband were for many years on the faculty of medicine at Chiang Mai University. I have known her for about twenty years. She’s an amazing woman who walks twice as fast as most other humans I know, and she has a sparkle in her eyes that few people have.

It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Circle Pub has hunky guys on stage. Gemini Massage has regular promotions and is recommended. Ram Coffee & Bar is set on the river, close to the Nawarat Bridge. Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms. The disco at Boat Bar is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike. 66

Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Phuket Travel Company, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. CC Bloom’s Hotel and Centara Grand Beach Resort are close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar and New Sawadee Boys are popular and very friendly venues. For a massage go to Relax at Me 1 & 2 , both located on South Pattaya Road. Get away to Koh Samed for a paradise island break.
