Ladyboi Sings! By James Barnes

Ladyboi (aka Tony Yalda) was born in Beirut and spent the first four years of his life in Athens, Greece, before his family moved to the United States, where he was raised in Chicago. He started singing at the age of two and he went on to attend DePaul University’s Theatre School to study theatre management before transferring to Roosevelt University’s Theatre Conservatory. Then to Los Angeles to pursue acting and after months of struggling, he landed his first role in Lisa Kudrow’s HBO series, “The Comeback.” Then came his first feature film, “American Dreamz,” starring alongside Hugh Grant and Mandy Moore. Ladyboi continued to star in films and television shows including “Meet the Spartans,” “Taqwacores,” and “Cyrus: Mind of a serial Killer.” Despite this impressive success as an actor, it wasn’t long before he gave in to his first and greatest passion: music. His teen years were spent obsessing over the music of Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin. Then on one fateful day in April of 2007 after hearing the vocals of Amy Winehouse for the first time, he realized that he could no longer deny this calling. 8

Ladyboi started an acoustic band called The Seekers and a rock band called The Coasts, but both projects petered out within a couple of months. In late 2009, he started a band called The Hollabacks, which gained national recognition and success. The band won the 2010 Slurpee Battle of the Bands competition; opened for N*E*R*D at the Fillmore East; was invited for a live session at Wolfgang’s Vault; had two songs featured in the thriller “Cyrus” (starring Lance Henriksen); and were the face of Slurpee for six months.

“I decided to continue writing and recording as a solo artist. First collaborating with Hollabacks bassist and Minneapolis native, Jeff Bernett, who introduced me to Ryan Liestman (keyboardist for the Jonas Brothers) and Michael Bland (drummer for Prince and The New Power Generation and Soul Asylum), and they quickly joined the project as songwriters and producers,” he told OUT in Thailand Magazine. Ladyboi left Hollywood and moved to Minneapolis in October of 2011 to complete his debut album. Working tirelessly, the solo project is currently set to take off this Spring. He is the self-proclaimed “crazy soulful Arab punk who’s taking over the world.” And he means it. 9

“I grew up in Chicago where there is a strong Asian community, and I have many Thai friends whom I met at school as well as Japanese, Chinese and Cambodian friends. I currently do not have immediate plans to travel to Thailand, but it has always been on my list. I am hoping to draw enough attention to my music that I may make Thailand a travel destination sooner rather than later.”

Ladyboi does not divulge his age, “My dear gent, you never ask a ladyboi her age! I can tell you I am an Aries. Pretty much in every sense of the sign. I’m passionate .Compassionate. And I like it to always somehow to be about me!” he laughs. “I currently am very single. I haven’t had a boyfriend since late 2008. My last relationship ended kind of harshly and I was a bit torn up over him. I met my ex in New York City. It was kind of love at first sight. We dated for almost a year, some of it long-distance as I had to return to Los Angeles, for work. The rela-

But that has not put him off love: “I am definitely open to a relationship now, but if you asked me 6 months to a year ago, the answer would have been a fast NO. But when I started working with Michael Bland on this album, he really helped me with lowering my guard. He kept telling me that my music had to come from an honest place. It wasn’t easy to deal with everything I realized about our history, because I saw a lot of my own faults and insecurities. And I had to take my part of the responsibility of the causes I made too.”

Ladyboi lists Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Etta James, Tina Turner, and Led Zeppelin among his musical heroes. “Of the more recent, I absolutely adored Amy Winehouse. I literally gained the courage to sing, and pursue a career because I heard her music. I just wanted to do it. And I’m eternally grateful for her raw honesty. It changed me. I believe it played a huge role in me becoming Ladyboi.” He describes his music as a combination of George Michael and Prince, mixed with Eurythmics and punk elements.” He is one of the growing band of artistes who are OUT and proud: “I don’t believe being gay and out can damage my career. I believe the more honest and comfortable you are in your skin will only bring forth more opportunities and success. I believe we are born perfect in our space and time with the desires (and I don’t just mean sexually) that we have because it is those desires that lead us towards our enlightenment and happiness. I am grateful for the pioneers who have paved the way for me. My debt of gratitude cannot be repaid by lying and denying who I am. We are a beautiful community. We are kind, compassionate, smart, creative, artistic. We have so much to offer our society, our friends, our family. 11

Why should we have to shy away from our personal lives? I want to freely speak, sing, and share my experiences of love. I, like any heterosexual human being, have fallen in love, was hurt, was happy, was sad. I have days that are great, and others that suck. Sometimes I love and hate my parents. Sometimes I don’t want to go to work, and other days I do. From what I can tell, these experiences are not so different from any heterosexual person I have met. So why do I have to be hush about my life? I encourage every member of the LGBT community to blab about their lives just like I have in this interview. Let it out. Show everybody you are just as much a 3-dimensional human being as the next person.” He would love to duet with some top 12

You’re OK Little Brother

Little brother, you’re OK, and you certainly aren’t alone. There are lots of us here in Thailand and in every country in the world. We are the ones who have romantic, sexual feelings toward other fellows, but not often about girls. It is our nature to be “turned on” my males. Did you hear? That is natural. It is OK.

Let’s say there are a thousand fellows in your school. Somewhere between 20 and 100 of them are like you. They include the katoey brothers who may not hide as well as some who are developing into “he-men” and who may be more successful in not letting anyone know they are attracted to male pictures and people. Which of these two types are you, little brother? You aren’t sure yet? That’s OK, too. If you are a Katoey, you are one of two types. One type feels like they are actually females and they are born inside boy’s bodies. These girls-in-boys may 14

decide to try to become women, with long hair, nail polish, something to make the breasts bigger, and so forth. The other type of katoey is like the guy I love and married. He is “mostly” a female in his attitudes, preferences, and his actions. But he is happy to have a male body and never thought about changing it. There are these two types, but there are guys in between. If you are the “man” type you have an easier job getting along in society but a harder job living true to your character. You look and act like the other guys. You are in the big majority in the world. But

the problem is you don’t think and feel like the other guys. They are sexually attracted to females. Their thoughts, heartbeats, and sex organs get excited by females in certain situations. But we don’t. Males in certain situations excite our bodies, thoughts and sex organs, and as we grow older, we try to get into those situations sometimes. So there are these two “man” types, the type that goes for women and the type that goes for men, but there are many in between. Whatever kind of man you are is OK, as long as you live true to your character.

Now we come to the psychological and social parts of this. Character is made up of two parts. One part is who we

The other part of our character is who we show ourselves to be to others and ourselves. Are we loyal, courteous, kind, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent, like good Scouts? That’s our outward character. Sexually, do we try to play the role of the male in situations with females? The trouble comes when we are one thing but we act like another. 15

I was a gay boy but I tried to act like I was a “real man.” I thought I was a “real man”. But after a while a war broke out inside me between the two parts and I had to let the real me on the inside come out. I had it locked in a closet and it had to come out or I would not have been able to stand it. I know a fellow who went to a famous school here. His war killed him. That is, he killed himself because he was never told it was OK to be who he was. His death was a tragedy that should not have happened. That brings us to families and society. Little brother, how would your family take it if they knew the truth about you? Would your dad be angry or violent? Would your mum cry? It’s terrible thing for a 16

Thai boy to make his mum cry, but you can make it up to her. We can agree that the main way a Thai fellow can show he’s a good son is to be supportive of his parents. It’s even more important than being obedient, isn’t it? If you can do that, eventually all else will be overlooked. If you can be supportive, you can be gay and it will be OK with your family. So don’t worry about your family. In the end they will love you and they will accept you. Listen, little brother, if you were made to love men and you try to marry a woman you will probably break her heart someday. Don’t do it. If you’re made for another kind of love you can’t win by fighting it. You’re OK just the way you are.

Music from the North

In his fourth article on listening to Thai music, our musicologist Jai-Pee homes in on the northern provinces– Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Lamphun, Phayao but most especially Chiang Mai.

Often called ‘The Rose of the North’, Thailand’s second largest city, once walled and moated, was the centre of a former country known as the Lanna kingdom long before Thailand was formed. As such an important centre it developed a cultural tradition all of its own which spread to the neighbouring provinces. The traditional wooden houses originally built on stilts abound; the cross on the beams of the roofs called ‘Galae’ which reflect the abundance of wild birdlife here are everywhere; the local dress is distinctive but then so is the music and dancing. 20

This is not to say that northern Thailand is totally different from the rest of the country – it most certainly is not, but rather like the Basque country of northern Spain and south west France, or Tyrol in Austria for example, the north has a distinctive flavour all of its own. In the hills and mountains along the borders with Myanmar and Laos many hill tribes have not only retained their own separate traditions but also their own languages such as Lissor, Aka and Hmong. However, there is a northern language too, which employs many words and phrases that

puzzle even Thais from Bangkok and further south. Much of the music from this area contains phrases or whole verses in the local dialect. What is so characteristic of this music is its devotion to a way of life cherished and adored by those who live and work here. Chiang Mai itself acts as a centre for the region. It hosts regular quite spectacular concerts which contain not only popular Thai music but which focus on the local traditional music. In the centre of all this is the Diva of the north, Soontaree Vechanon, a singer of enormous talent who has reigned supreme, head and shoulders above all others, for decades. She teamed up with another singer-songwriter, born locally, Jarun Manopet, a man of huge talent, sadly deceased these last 10 years. His song-writing, about half of it in local dialect captures the humour, folklore and very essence of life in the old Lanna Kingdom. Jarun did move to Bangkok for some years but teamed up as a business partner with Soontaree who has recorded many of his songs.

Soontaree has a splendid restaurant – a large imposing place, at the north end of Tambon Faham alongside the river Mae Ping to the north of the city. It is a palatial building with giant lanterns, cosy corners, balconies and garden stretching down to the river. On one of the balconies in the centre of the building is a stage for live music which can be heard every night. The great highlight comes at 8.30pm when Soontaree herself enters and sings – her songs all have the northern flavour and many of them are from the pen of Jarun. The walls are adorned with photographs and memorabilia, the menu is appetizing and very sensibly priced. It makes any visit to Chiang Mai complete and satisfying as you taste northern sausages or local fish while listing to one of Thailand’s most precious assets. There are also many smaller restaurants throughout the north where this distinctive music may be heard because many would-be performers wish to emulate the perfection of Soontaree and Jarun.

This delectable musical morsel is a vivid and loving portrait of life along the river that flows through the centre of this great northern landscape and it will enchant and delight you forever bringing back stirring images and memories of this wonderful region.

Everard’s Retribution In between swimming, sipping wine and snoozing, Patrick Everard has managed to write two novels. His first book, ‘Manila Boy’ was published in 2010 by Book Guild Publishing. The second, ‘Retribution’, has just been released by New Generation Publishing. Patrick spoke to James Barnes about his life and work.

Patrick Everard was born in 1967, on the cliff top of Barton-on-Sea (near Bournemouth, UK). “Ever since that first day, if I settle too far from a beach, a colossal cloud of claustrophobia collapses down on me,” says this urbane writer. “When I was 10, my dad was made redundant and my comfortable childhood was turned upside down as we moved, leaving our nice house, my school, my friends and the coast miles behind. I hated being away from the beach and couldn’t wait to move back.” He moved to London in his early 30’s. “Before living there, I use to feel a surge of excitement every time I went for a weekend (probably the thrill of a packed sauna at 2:00am, heaving with good looking drunk Joe’s willing to receive swollen goods). The hedonistic titillation 26

of London soon faded when my working days were spent stuck on underground trains, stuck fighting through hordes of slow moving tourists, stuck in front of stuffy clients, stuck on the phone, and stuck in meetings with mindless management, fighting the urge not to poke them in the eye with my blunt pencil.” “When I had finally had enough of the big city, I bought a large wreck of a house in Bournemouth, filled it with gay lodgers and spent my days slowly bringing it back to its former glory. The lodgers, when they weren’t arguing with each other, provided a steady stream of rough trade traipsing through the Edwardian hallway and up the stairs, which was a very happy distraction from sanding down floorboards and glossing door frames!”

He gave it all up to go and live on an island in the Philippines: “I always thought I would end up in Thailand, and actually spend much of my time between Thailand & Philippines, as does my character – Sidney, in ‘Manila Boy’.” He first visited Thailand in 1989. “It was the result of being a complete imbecile! A week previously, I had spent an afternoon drinking copious pints of Stella in a pub in Southampton, got in my car and promptly drove into the back of another. Having kissed my license goodbye for 12 months, I decided to take a long holiday and spotted a 3-week deal at a resort in Pattaya. The thought of flying to Asia filled me with excitement and nervousness, I had no idea what to expect. I thought the food would be all insects and rice, so I packed steak and kidney pies, and marmite and plenty of mosquito spray. Pattaya 23 years ago was very different than it is now, much smaller and quieter. I ventured out to the bars and soon got chatting to a group of Danish lads who gave me a tour of the girlie bars, which did very little for my queer libido, but did get me wondering if there were bars like this full of scantily dressed boys. The next two nights were spent wandering up and down side soi’s until I was eventually rewarded with a beautiful smile and welcoming gesture ushering me through a parted curtain into dimly lit heaven. The papa-san soon put me at ease, and informed that there was a room avail-

able upstairs should my urges require immediate attention. By now, my urges were so urgent I thought I would have to beat them with a big stick, and promptly made my selection and took advantage of their generous offer of accommodation. That first experience sticks in my mind as being incredibly sensual and extremely cheap, a marvellous combination!” That night, changed him forever, “I fell in love with Asian eyes. Thus began a love affair with a country and culture that I would keep coming back to visit, from the northern borders near Chiang Rai, down to the sun soaked beaches of Phuket.

“The Philippines had become my chosen destination. However, after spending a couple of months in Manila, I soon realised you could add pongy, polluted, and packed to that list. It was time to move on, and I decided to settle on a sun soaked island 4 hours south of the capital.” To complete his island life, Patrick set up a wooden beach bar, “The staff consisted of mainly ladyboys, or more accurately – manly ladyboys, given the positive orgy 28

of lipstick and facial hair vying for attention. Although they were not the prettiest or the most irresistible creatures to look at, they were extremely good at entertaining the punters, and getting cash in the till. Due to my own status of earlyretired idle bastard, I kept my own duties to a bare minimum, with the exception of buying stock, and then promptly drinking half of it.”

This is when Patrick started writing his first novel ‘Manila Boy’. “I had always wanted to write a book and the first day I arrived in the Philippines I started jotting what would later become the first chapter of ‘Manila Boy’. It was an account of my own experience, being wedged on a packed plane for 18 hours, jetting off to a new, exciting and exotic land. Like most of my previous scribbles, it was destined for a merciless demise at the hands of the delete button, when I heard a sad story of survival from a Filipino friend. His tale made quite an impact on me, and I wanted to record it in some way for

others to read. The longer I stayed here, I began to hear other poignant stories from Pinoy›s I met. Personal accounts that ranged from circumcisions performed by a shaman in the hills, to life on the streets selling single cigarettes to drivers stuck in traffic. I wanted to incorporate some of these narratives in a book, and ‘Manila Boy’ gave me an opportunity to do that.” Patrick’s new book, ‘Retribution’, is set in London. “As a teenager I was fascinated by the Krays, (an infamous English pair of gangster twins) and read anything I could find about them. I guess as a young man I viewed their lifestyle in a somewhat glamorous light, and judging by their cult status I was not alone in this. They were well dressed, they had money, flash cars, and owned clubs. Had it not been for their 29

They mixed with the celebrities of the time, and in doing so became celebrities in their own right, albeit notoriously through criminal activity. Another fact I found intriguing about them, was Ronnie’s blatant homosexuality. It has been documented that Reggie also had a propensity for sexual acts with other men. Public opinion back then was nowhere near as liberal as it is now, in fact it was illegal to indulge in any homosexual behaviour prior to 1967. Running OUT in Thailand

If you are a serious runner or just enjoy gentle jogging as a way of keeping fit and want to experience some of the “real” Thailand there can be no more rewarding activity than joining one of the many running events that happen all over the Kingdom.

You don’t need to be a super fit marathon runner to take part! There are a range of distances available- from Fun Runs of 3, 4 or 5 km to a Mini Marathon (10.5 kms), Half Marathon (21 kms) or full Marathon (42 km) and everything in between! Participants are put into a category by age group. This is not the time to be self-conscious about your age since you will be wearing a large sign pinned to your running vest with your age group for everyone to see. On average there is at least half a dozen events happening every month somewhere in Thailand. Naturally, there are big international events like the marathon of Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket but far more interesting as a window into Thai culture and local community life are 34

the small events organized by local communities, schools, universities and hospitals. If you make the effort to join one of these events you are likely to be treated like a star attraction. Perhaps you will be one of only two or three westerners among two-three hundred Thai people. Don’t be surprised if you are called onto the stage to introduce yourself even if you come last in the run. Everywhere you will be greeted with warm smiles and being Thailand – of course – lots of delicious homemade food. Many events are held around the same time every year. A snap shot of some of the most interesting event locations include the famous Sukothai National Heritage Park in January, the Rama 8 Bridge in Bangkok in February, Thai-

land’s only Water Fowl Birds Sanctuary Talay Noi in Patalung Province in March, the small seaside town of Sichon south of Surat Thani Province in April and one of the oldest cities in Thailand, Phitsanulok in May. The World Heritage Site of Ayuttaya in August. September sees events in as diverse locations as River Kwai and Koh Samui. By October time its getting cooler in the capital so what better time for the Bangkok Midnight Run and in the same month the International Marathon. December is getting cool in Chiang Mai so a good time for their International Marathon or a tour of one of the nicest university campuses in all of Thailand Chiang Mai University Mini Marathon.

In the past it has been very difficult for westerners to find out about these events but more and more information is going on-line and being translated into English. One of the main web sites to check for more information is jogandjoy. com. Even so expect to do some detective work if planning to take part in some of the smaller events. Having someone with you who can read and write Thai is a distinct advantage as in rural areas even hotel names may be only written in Thai. Like any travel into rural Thailand a lot of patience and a big smile will be your biggest help and you are sure to be rewarded with genuine friendliness and assistance where ever you go. 35

It’s hard to know how ‘One Man Army’ fits into the Discovery Channel’s (True Vision ch. 21) remit but if you like ogling very butch men being encouraged to jump through various hoops, this is one show that was made for you.

What do you get when you pit elite military, extreme sports and law enforcement operatives against one another? One Man Army, a competition series where the toughest of the tough go head to head and toe to toe, eyeball to eyeball, etc, etc, in events that would sideline merely mortal contestants in a flash. Speed, strength and intelligence(?) are tested without recourse to an expensive studio. It’s all hosted by Mykel Hawke, a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran and former Green Beret. He is the ‘creator’ of the show and along with his unlikely name, he has suspiciously unlikely jetblack hair. No matter. . In his own way, he is sexy, if you like ‘em macho and he commands this reality game show nonsense with a ‘cum to bed’ voice which sounds like bourbon on the rocks. That’s Bourbon Street and granite rocks. 36

Each week sees four, muscle bound, beefcake hunks competing in a series of gritty challenges with the loser of each round carted off in a black van called, ‘the extraction vehicle’. The eventual winner gets to flex his testosterone-topped torso with pride, 10,000 USD and the title, ‘One Man Army’. It’s a homoerotic fantasy feast with contests that often resemble ‘Master and Slave’ role-playsMykel is always the Master, conducting his Slave competitors with a laughable seriousness that undermines the earnest attempts to breathe momentous momentum into the preposterous proceedings. ACTING STRAIGHT: PAUL WINFIELD By Brian Baxter

“I was given the prestige of a distinguished black actor but very little power.. They give prestige out by the bucketload, but power by the teaspoon. Just enough to stoke your ego.” P.W. Sammy Davis Jr. was fond of remarking that he had to work extra hard in show business because he had three strikes against him (apart from being small and not handsome): he was black, Jewish and following an accident had the use of only one eye. Paul Winfield might have echoed the sentiment (having noted that he was ‘not pretty and could not sing or dance’): his three strikes were being black, gay and highly intelligent, all of which conservative Hollywood resented, especially the last since it qualified him for the term ‘uppity’. Both of them began their careers in the 1960s when, it’s worth remembering, entertainers such as Harry Belafonte could star at Las Vegas, but not use the hotel swimming pool. Roles for legitimate black actors were very limited. They’d progressed past the soft shoe shuffle, the gormless groom and the servile servant but not as far as people like Winfield wished. He began his acting life on stage, which he returned to with increasing distinction having made his debut in 38

the controversial The Dutchman and the Toilet. Later roles included Othello and other classics, such as The Seagull and quality modern drama, although only once on Broadway. Aged 26 he made his television debut, in a 1965 Perry Mason show, which starred the most successful gay actor in TV history, Raymond Burr, later famous as Ironside. Winfield kept his gayness quiet, at least in the media, fearing that it would compromise his career. Privately he enjoyed life and eventually began a 30year relationship with designer Charles Gillan, which ended with his partner’s death in 2002, two years before his own, from a combination of heartbreak, diabetes and weight problems. He made his big screen debut in a Sidney Poitier film, The Lost Man (1969) and hit the comparative big time in Martin Ritt’s film Sounder (1972). He and costar Cecily Tyson received Oscar nominations as ‘best actor/actress’ - a rare accolade. Hattie McDaniel had received the best supporting actress award for her role in Gone With The Wind over thirty

years previously, but in the history of Hollywood only five black actors have taken home the top Oscar and a further seven that for best supporting role. The first of these was Poitier who broke the mould, allowing his natural successor Denzel Washington to become the first black super star and incidentally the only one to win two Oscars. Winfield did not get the prize but there were consolations. Ritt cast him as second lead in the admirable, Conrack (1974) and many years later – only months before his death- he had the important role of the teacher in a remake of Sounder. This was produced by Kevin Hook, one of the most prolific and powerful men in the business, who had begun his career playing the son to Tyson and Winfield in the first version. From those early years onwards Winfield notched up 124 titles. He was most well -known for Sounder, in the strong role of a man who steals to feed his family and is arrested and tortured for the crime. He also had a plum role as a cop in The Terminator and worked throughout his life, although latterly much of that was voice only or in guest roles. Much of his best work was in television drama, including Sophisticated Gentlemen, Roots and an adaptation of Go Tell it to the Mountain by the gay, black writer James Baldwin. He starred as Martin Luther King in the 1978 biopic King and was active as Artist in Residence at the University of Hawaii and in community theatre groups. He may have had three ‘strikes’ against him but overcame them. Importantly, his struggle for recognition coincided with the growth of the fight against racism and homophobia and – by example – helped reduce some of the prejudice and bigotry in society. 39

Dear Darika, Please help me with a problem with my neighbours. I have lived in the same apartment for the last ten years. I like the neighbourhood and the building. It is a condominium, and I own it. Moving has never crossed my mind until recently. Its owner rents out the apartment next door to mine. Some new tenants moved in two weeks ago. They are from another Asian country. Their front door is always open until very late at night, probably because they do not want to spend money running their air conditioning. Unfortunately, I must pass their door to reach 40

Things turn bad whenever I have a guest. At any given time, I am dating several guys. We are all homebodies, so four or five nights a week, I have a dinner guest who spends the night. When guests arrive, an elderly woman appears at the neighbourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s door and scolds me very loudly in (her native language). She apparently disapproves of my choice of company. Her behaviour is very unsettling and my other neighbours peek out their own doors to see what is going on. The others in her apartment laugh very loudly. apartment with small yappy dog. They leave their garbage outside their front door until the building staff dispose of it. Recently I came home to find the dog loose in the corridor, where it had left several small “gifts” for my neighbours and me.

Your problem is complicated by your inability to communicate with the senior citizen who lives next door. Consequently, you cannot determine whether her behaviour is driven by homophobia or mental illness. Unfortunately, you must to eliminate throwing grandma from the balcony, but a number of solutions come to mind. First I would try being sickeningly sweet to her. Bring her a little gift every day, like a flower or a piece of fruit, or maybe a home-baked chocolate chip cookie. Smile broadly and say something that passes for a pleasantry. Eventually, I think she and/or her companions will tire of what she is doing and leave you alone. If not, I suggest dating a policeman or a soldier. Insist that he come and go from your home in full uniform—ideally wearing a sidearm--and look as menacing as possible. Or you could borrow the little dog that lives next to me to yap at them for hours at a time and leave small gifts at their front door. They might actually eat the dog, which would solve my problem.

The medical condition, ‘broken heart syndrome’ (BHS) results from suffering extreme stress, such as the loss of a loved one or the ending of a romantic relationship. It causes symptoms like a heart attack. When the heart reacts to a surge of stress hormones, this can cause symptoms; the heart gets temporarily bigger and can’t pump as efficiently. Its beat may be unusually forceful. Other symptoms include general weakness, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath and chest pain, all the symptoms of a heart attack. Scientists aren’t sure what causes broken heart syndrome. However, a release of adrenaline may temporarily damage the heart, causing the heart’s arteries to narrow so contributing to BHS. This condition also can result in an accumulation of fluid in your lungs. Fortunately, in broken heart syndrome, the arteries are not blocked by fatty atherosclerosis and it isn’t normally fatal nor does it result in irreversible muscle damage. Recovery is quick. Someone suffering from a broken heart also may experience depression, ennui, lethargy, loss of appetite and may sleep too much or not enough.

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms. The disco at Boat Bar is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike. 66

Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Phuket Travel Company, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. CC Bloom’s Hotel and Centara Grand Beach Resort are close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets.

In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. Pattaya Hotmale is your one-stop info and cafe centre. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Spilia Karaoke at Ganymede Hotel & Sauna and P2 Lounge are worth a visit. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the luxurious Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. 74

In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar and New Sawadee Boys are popular and very friendly venues. For a massage go to Relax at Me 1 & 2 , both located on South Pattaya Road. Get away to Koh Samed for a paradise island break.
