Rik Barnett has been called, ‘England’s Zac Efron’, but this good-looking star is set to carve out a career that is all his own with a brand new play, ‘Bosie’- about Oscar Wilde’s notorious lover. Rik spoke to James Barnes in an exclusive interview. 7
Rik Barnett sets hearts fluttering wherever he goes. The 23-year-old stunner was born in Macclesfield in Cheshire, which he describes as, “A quaint countryside town in England. Surrounded by rolling green hills,” a far cry from the Los Angeles landscape that is now his home. “I had the most blissful childhood; I have the most supportive and loving family. It is only in hindsight that I truly see how lucky I was to have been raised in a small town; knowing all my neighbours names, eating fresh food straight from the farm and feeling so very safe. It was wonderful.” His move to LA was a familiar route for aspiring actors: “I have always wanted to be on stage and on TV.” He also describes himself as a writer and director; he started early, “When I was around six or seven, I wrote my own little play and had my classmates act it out with me. My first taste of being a director and seeing my work come to life. I always loved the excitement that acting gave me, and that 8
excitement has not left me –in fact it has only gotten stronger!” His heroes include people like Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins, “For their utter brilliance and consistent high quality of work. That is what inspires me, working with talented people in all aspects of the business.” He makes his craft a continuous study which started with a my Performing Arts College course -formerly the ‘Sheila Simon Performing Arts School’, where he studied full time and finished with distinction and honours. “Most recently I have completed the acting program at UCLA. I feel that I am always learning no matter what. Education and knowledge is a strong key to success, no matter what you are doing.” His first breaks came when he was still in the UK, “I actually got on to a roll back in England of getting consistent work, which was wonderful. I worked on many plays then got some TV and then Film work.” But the USA was an irresistible
Lord Alfred Douglas ‘Bosie’
magnet for Rik: “The USA is founded on starting anew and making your dreams come true. I decided that if I can make my dreams come true with the beautiful California sunshine then it sounds rather perfect. America is the land of opportunity, for everyone.” So how does he feel about being called England’s Zac Efron? “I think that is a very charming title. He is incredibly good-looking and has made quite a career for himself. I am truly flattered.” Those good looks will serve Rik very well as he embarks upon his next and maybe, most exciting project, ‘Bosie’. “‘It is a play that I have written and have worked on for some time, about the life and love of Lord Alfred Douglas. Alfred was Oscar Wilde’s lover and is the reason Oscar went to prison and had such a terrible downfall. Alfred is a distasteful, sad and menacing character. He has elements of being a complete sociopath
from wanting to succeed in life and failing time after time. It is tragic and sad, I want to show how incredibly venerable and insecure Alfred was but at the same time showing how he did bring about his own state of hell.” Playing such an unsympathetic character is a brave move for someone so young but it is a chance to prove that the beauty has brains. “I relish the excitement it gives me to play such a viscous, cruel role. This is because it is far from whom I actually am. So it is great to really get in to playing a part that is so far from who you normally are.” Riks research has been exhaustive; “I have read –extensively- book after book, dissecting 1st hand accounts from people that knew Alfred. Also taking note of what others have done in the past to portray him to help me try and show a new light and new angle on the sometimes misunderstood boy.” 9
His main ambitions remain in his profession, as he looks to the future:”I want fluidity within my career and the ability to succeed in my industry and be able to support my family doing what I love: performing!” He is like many modern stars and makes himself accessible through the internet. “I want all your readers to know how happy and excited I am for them to read about me. Please let them know that they can find my Facebook page on Twitter, I love interacting with my Fans. Social media has really opened up the lines of communication and it is a great thing!”
The focus has always been on Oscar, but Rik is determined that in ‘Bosie’, we will discover the story anew and learn about the real Bosie. “I think that we are really going to see his heart, his vulnerability. It is going to explore the reasons why he did what he did, what he had hoped to achieve. His family life and background are going to be explained in depth. It will really be an honest exploration of Alfred that has not been done in this way before.” But he feels that it is not important that a gay man plays the lead role: I think that this role would be easy for any well trained actor to explore if you are a gay or straight man. I really think the role and power of it all comes from the heart.”
was very fun and cute.” But he has never been to Thailand, “My parents have just spent 4 months there and I cannot wait to do the same! I received photograph after photograph of the most exquisitely beautiful country I have ever seen. I am very eager to visit and explore your beautiful country and meet all the wonderful people that reside there.” He will not be short of suitors here as he is currently single and says, “In all honesty, I feel very open to and lucky to have any kind of love in my life. It is an exciting challenge we all must face, finding the one partner we want to spend the rest of our life with. But I know that my other half is out there in the world and I am more than ready to settle on down!”
Rik celebrated his birthday by taking a very American trip to Disneyland. “It 10

This article offers a guide for the unmarried man who might be considering a Civil Partnership with his Thai companion. Many of the points raised apply to all nationalities where a CP is recognised, but this is a record of the specific process undertaken between an Englishman, living in Thailand, with his Thai partner, in 2012.

When people heard that we were planning a CP there were invariably two questions: Why and Why Vietnam? The latter is easily answered. The British Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City are the nearest locations authorised to carry out the ceremony and issue the necessary documents. It is not permissible in Thailand if your partner is Thai or in Vietnam if he is Vietnamese. You may travel to many countries (check the net) but, since you need to stay there for a minimum of seven clear days and return between two and twelve weeks later, desirable options – Tokyo say – would make the process more time consuming and costly. As to why, the advantages may be summarised in three areas. Emotional: it puts a seal on a long-term relationship. Not necessary, perhaps, but a sign – in our case seven years knowing each other and half that time living together – of commitment. Social: It gives your part14
ner (sorry, this sounds pompous) a status and sense of security. Also, it might make holiday travel outside Asia easier. That will be tested later this year on a planned trip to the U.K. and France to see family and friends. Economic: it is possible that your former employers will pay part of your pension (understandably reduced if there is a discrepancy in age – the BBC knocks 2.5 % off for each year) to your partner in the future. Check out personal circumstances. O.K., if all that makes sense, how to go about it? How expensive will it be and how complicated? Naturally you must be single and have passports, which in your case will be sufficient since marital status is easily checked. For the Thai a Certificate of Non-Impediment is required, which can only be obtained from his local area office. It requires his signature, that of a close relative and three officials. It will involve a couple of visits there, and ‘tea money’.
This must be translated into English and both versions certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok or the Thai Embassy in Vietnam. We opted for Bangkok so that it was official before departure and used Star Visa services (Chiang Mai) for the translation and courier work. Complete this about one month before leaving. We preferred the vibrant city of HCMC and made contact with the Consulate via their efficient web site. They proved helpful and friendly throughout. The first visit requires a week in Vietnam, plus arrival and departure and on the last day, you visit their offices with passports, appropriate forms and the initial fee of $107 U.S. or the Dong equivalent. During the interim, we enjoyed a three-day holiday on the beach at the lovely city of Hoi An. You book your appointment at the Consulate and will need two witnesses (a service no longer provided) of any nationality but holding passports. We were lucky in having two friends who generously travelled with us three weeks later. On your special day, you turn up in your glad rags, all four with passports, and pay two more fees –one for the certification and the second for the ceremony.
The money in Dong or paid by credit card. The actual ceremony is simple, with signatures needed and an affirmation, followed by an exchange of rings (not compulsory) and hey presto it’s all over bar the Champagne and celebratory dinner. The outlay will vary with the individuals but there are inescapable costs: air travel (in our case ten flights as we came from Chiang Mai and took flights within Vietnam), plus fees, visas, courier costs, hotels and expenses whilst away. Thai Air and the less conveniently timed, slightly cheaper Vietnam airline may be used. Hotels are plentiful. Budget at least 100,000 baht: probably more. We spent twice that (excluding rings), without travelling extravagantly. We opted for the Continental Hotel in HCMC and found it splendid: centrally situated with spacious rooms. Good value at $99 inclusive, as was Hoi An Beach Resort at a similar price. Food can be superb in Vietnam and costs about the same as Thailand in good quality restaurants. So, 200,000 baht plus – or 125 million Dong! Go Club Class, stay at the Hyatt and the sky’s the limit. 15

Pai nestles in a verdant valley, 135 kilometres north of Chiang Mai. PRIDE IN TAIPEI By Pied Piper
Although I travel quite extensively, I rarely pay much attention to the local newspapers that are often placed in my hotel room. So it was a couple of years ago, when I checked into a hotel in Taipei. Yet, as I placed my laptop and charger on the desk, there on the front page of the China Times was a striking colour photo of several gorgeous smiling guys, all in low-cut Speedos.
Taiwan newspapers never have interesting photos on the cover, so I had to look again to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. It turned out I had arrived the day after the Taipei Gay Pride Parade, an event which was estimated to have been celebrated by 30,000 people. 30,000? That could not be true! It had to be a misprint. After all, there have been similar Pride Parades in other Asian capitals, and none has ever drawn more than 3,000 – if that. Besides, as a frequent visitor to Taipei over many years, I was well aware that whilst the city has quite a thriving gay scene, the LGBT community is still somewhat closeted. It was just not possible that so many would actually take part in a march for gay rights! 24
But I was dead wrong! Almost unbelievably, Taipei has by far the largest, the best organised, the most fun Pride Parade anywhere in the region. In all the photos I found later on the internet, there were images of young smiling Taiwanese all having what seemed like the ball of balls (oops – pardon the pun!). I quickly made a decision: I’m going to be in Taipei for the 2011 Parade. Thanks to the Pride’s website, I eventually discovered it was to be held on Saturday 29 October. Their nice PR man, Yoshihiro, even told me that a decision had finally been taken that in future the Parade will always be on the last Saturday in October.
I flew from Bangkok two days early, to meet up with friends and to get more information before the Parade itself. I noted that many of the participants assemble first in Peace Park, the once infamous cruising park often known before the hotel changed hands as “the one behind the Hilton” and where the gay movie Crystal Boys was filmed. Early on the sunny Saturday afternoon, the Park is filling up with lots of cute guys and girls, this time to celebrate their gay lifestyles. There’s an hour before the March starts, and already I see groups from Malaysia, Japan and several Taiwan universities. None from Thailand, though. Some are waving flags trying to locate friends in the growing throng; others are helping each other paint their 25
faces and get the their placards in order. Should I be surprised they all seem so amazingly young? In wonderfully happy mood, soon everyone troops the 300 meters or so to the enormous main square in front of the Presidential Palace where matters of dress – and undress – are finalised. The Parade itself starts bang on 2:00pm. I have no idea how many people are here - but it sure is a lot (later I learn it is again around 30,000). Everyone is arranged in some kind of order that escapes me, although the 80 or so guys wearing the least clothes (Speedos, Aqux etc.) are at the front, immediately behind a Lady Gaga figure and a huge rainbow banner. Everyone receives a brochure giving details of the march. Unfortunately, it is all in Chinese, and I fail to realise the Parade is so large it is split into two sections to cover different parts of the city centre. 26
But I am perfectly happy with the group I am following. It takes our route past the impressive Chinese-looking building which houses one of the world’s great Concert Halls, around a number of other streets before returning by the similarly impressive National Theatre and the entrance to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Park. The atmosphere is great. Everyone smiling, everyone happy, lots of laughter. Even some startled shoppers get caught up in the fun, and soon quite a sizeable contingent starts following the Parade. The police and organisers are on hand to ensure there is enough room for participants and traffic. All along the route, the marchers pose for photos, carrying their rainbow flags and just enjoying a time when they can be free to join with their friends to express their sexuality. The Parade is not just a fun day out. Each year it has a serious theme. In 2011 it is
to protest the lack of action on gay rights which had been promised by the city’s Mayor during his election campaign, and then seemingly forgotten. No doubt there will be a similar theme this year. By 5:00 pm when the Parade returns to its starting point, I decide to call it a day – if for no other reason, I feel tired. Running around trying to get pics, gently forcing myself through the growing crowds of on-lookers to get ahead of the Parade, has taken its toll on my feet and legs! But it’s decision time again. Being a Saturday, the bars and clubs will not get going until much nearer midnight. I decide a hot spring will ease my slightly aching muscles. Just to the west of the city and easy to reach by the extensive subway, there is a galaxy of natural hot springs of which two are limited to men only. Many gay guys go there but, as in the bars, guys tend to go in groups with their friends. So these are not ideal for hook-
ups – unless you are really lucky. When I enter the one I have been to several times before, I am amazed. The place is absolutely packed – more than 100 guys walking around in all their glory with no inhibitions. I disrobe, shower, wash and sink into the warm water. I estimate that 90% of the crowd is between 18 and 30, most in very good shape. I smile: after such a great afternoon this is just a wonderful way to relax and watch some of the loveliest and most handsome guys Asia can offer. My one regret? I wish I could have smuggled in the camera! If your appetite has been whetted and you want to consider travelling to Taipei for the 2012 Parade, mark the date – Saturday 27 October. Sadly, KLM stopped its daily flight from Bangkok earlier this year, and there is now no really inexpensive link between the cities. The non-stop carriers (with respective on-line prices) presently are EVA (Bt. 11,700) 27

select is close to a subway station, for this makes getting around the city very easy. Mind you, taxis are not expensive – just make sure you have your destination written in Chinese characters. My flights and hotel are already booked. Oh! And I now pay a lot more attention to the local newspapers in my hotel rooms. Hopefully, one will eventually lead the way to yet another similarly exciting adventure.

Thai “Pop” Music or is it?? Jai-Pee’s sixth and final article on music in Thailand actually does not investigate what it sets out to do – rather, it lurches off at a tangent, inviting the visitor to the Kingdom to experience one of Asia’s greatest and most successful bands – Carabao.
There is a common saying in Thailand – ‘same-same’. Nothing could be truer of Thai pop music than this – if you have heard one song then you will have heard them all! It can now be officially stated that our parents were correct. Today’s pop music all sounds pretty much the same according to extensive recent research undertaken by the Spanish National Research Council and published on July 26th in the journal of Scientific Reports. The findings are that pop music has generally become more and more ‘same-same’ over the years – so is it worth spending the rest of this article writing about teeny-bop groups from Korea, Japan or Thailand itself? My conclusion is a large NO especially when there is one group that all visitors to Thailand might like to explore for their ingenuity, inventiveness and originality. That group is Carabao. Carabao are known for their ‘songs for life’. This kind of music came to prominence through the protest songs of the 1970s political upheaval in Thailand. Carabao have blended the acoustic/folk style of ‘peua chiwit’ (songs for life) with other forms of Thai music, western rock and country music, and various kinds of world music like Latin music and reggae, earning such labels as ‘ethnic rockers’ or ‘Rolling Stones of Asia’. Carabao’s
30
songs often tackle social and political issues, demanding social justice and taking on the causes of the ordinary Thai people, but they have also created love songs and more philosophical songs that carry messages for people everywhere. Group leader Aed Carabao is loved by many but his sharp tongue and open criticism of corrupt politicians, big business and environmental destruction perhaps make it surprising that he has lasted so long. At least one or two songs on most albums up to the mid-‘90s were banned by the government and coverage of the band rarely appeared on government TV and radio stations. Despite this, Carabao is the most popular Thai rock group of all time. Carabao reached cult status long ago and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world. They are often compared with U2, but they seem more like the Strawbs, that remarkable and resilient folk-rock group of the late 60s and 70s in the UK. Although the Strawbs were never very political (apart from their greatest hit ‘Part of the Union’ in 1973) they successfully combined the then currently popular rhythms with elements of folk music – Sandy Denny (of ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ fame) and Rick Wakeman were early group members. 31

Carabao released their first album, ‘Lung Khee Maow’ (“The Drunken Old Man”), in 1981, featuring a simple, primitive folky sound, not drastically different from other ‘songs for life’ bands from that era, although it did feature a noticeable rock influence. Some of the melodies were borrowed from Asian or Thai folk or rock songs, with the title track based on a Filipino folk melody. The album did not sell many copies, but Aed set about recruiting other members so that the band could effectively perform live. Carabao first came into the national spotlight with their third album, ‘Waniphok’ (‘The Wandering Minstrel’), the title song of which told the story of a blind street musician and became a major hit. The song featured the distinctive ‘Samcha’ rhythm, a kind of mix of Northeastern 32
Thai folk rhythms like Mo Lam and Luk Thung, featured in a previous article in this magazine, with Latin beats. Later Carabao albums contained many songs done in this style. Aed has noted with pride that before ‘Waniphok’ was released, discos in Thailand played only Western songs, but the catchy indigenous rhythms of the song managed to break down those barriers. Carabao’s most popular album, ‘Made In Thailand’, was released in 1984 and sold over four million copies. To date they have released 25 albums. The original line-up has changed many times over the years but the group is still as strong and popular as ever, 2011 being their 25th anniversary year. They are well worth hearing and have far more appeal than any of the ‘same-same’ pop groups that litter stages and arenas all over the country. For more information go to their website at: www.carabao.net; they are a great Thai institution!

URE VENT OUT
Sun, Sweat and Sand for a Good Cause By Adam Preston
There is an old saying that charity begins at home and that has been one guiding principle of the Samui Gay Pride organization. There is so many groups needing our help and attention and so many good causes from HIV-AIDS to the environment it can be difficult for a small organization with limited resources to know where to start.
For the gay community of Koh Samui The Samui School for Special Needs stood out as a particularly worthwhile cause. The school receives no government support as a school or as a charity and is struggling to meet all the criteria needed for official charity status. That makes appealing for money from overseas almost impossible and it means there is no tax relief available for Thai businesses who would like to make donations. The children have a range of problems from autism to physical and mental handicap. It costs 3,000 baht per month to send a child here but for many local families this is too much. At a recent meeting with the Samui Gay Pride committee the head teacher explained that some families will send their child to school for as long as they can – maybe 3-6 months 36
– but then have financial problems and the child is forced to stay at home for many months. All the behavioural and educational benefits that are gained are lost again and it is back to square one! The Samui Gay Pride organizing committee hope that their 2nd Annual Beach Volleyball Competition will raise valuable funds for the school as well as awareness of the plight of these children. Last year was the first event of its kind for the Samui gay community and the modest money raised went to very good use making basic but essential repairs around the school. Details can be seen on the samuigaypride.org website. An event like a Volleyball Competition works well on so many levels. Thai guys working in hotels and tourism love to play volleyball so it is a sport that brings
people together: tourist and local, retired expat and restaurant waiter – everyone is equal under the sun, sand and volleyball net. The mix of camp camaraderie and serious competition amuses visitors to Samui who stumble upon the beach event. And take a look at the faces of the children from the Special Needs School at last year’s event – we were told that some of them had never been to the beach! Unbelievable but true. Hard working low-income Thai families with special needs children, living on a tropical island that attracts tourists from around the world but never having the time to take their own children to the beach. The Samui Gay Pride organizing committee looks forward to welcoming you
to Samui island and welcoming you to Chaweng Beach 22- September. There are so many ways that you can help make this event a lot of fun and a big success. You can form your own team or join a team. You can bring your friends to watch and find a favourite team to cheer. You can also help by sponsoring a team of local Thai guys who want to play but cannot afford the entrance fee. Finally yet importantly, you can make a donation to the Samui School for Special Needs and help put the smile back on the faces of some of Thailand’s most needy children. OUT V ON T
Gordon Blimey BBC Lifestyle (True Visions ch. 58) has been serving up daily portions of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA but have we had our fill of this ubiquitous telly chef?
We’ve seen him in Masterchef and Hell’s Kitchen from both sides of the Atlantic and after Kitchen Nightmare’s UK success, we now get the US version. Gordon, famously put the ‘F’ in food with his four letter tirades that saw the post production bleeper guy getting bonuses that would make a banker seem poor and in this new incarnation, there is no let up in the swearing. The novelty of an offensive language warning at the start of a cook38
ery show has not diminished. Here, a restaurant that is headed from the frying pan into the fire hosts Chef Ramsay to save the business and each show follows a similar recipe. Gordon arrives and orders a selection from the menu and dismisses each dish with incredulous disdain. Gordon meets the staff and confronts them with their failings and is greeted with dismayed denial. Gordon is disgusted with the filth he discovers in the
kitchen and embarrasses all concerned who have been unconcerned, despite the avalanche of lawsuits that are likely on their way from litigious ex-diners. Most of these restaurants are owned by dysfunctional families and Gordon has to discard his chef’s hat to don that of an agony uncle who heals the divide- cue rage, then tears, then hugs. After dinner service, Gordon moves a team in to makeover the dining room and/or an ex-
termination expert to clean up the kitchen and when the restaurant staff come to work the next morning, he presents them with fresh premises, a fresh menu and a fresh start. The business is relaunched to cheering diners and Ramsay rides off into the sunset, lit by a glorious golden light of vindication. His social science skills are as brilliant as his acumen and if you happen to have a failing eatery, call him in quick. 39

ACTING STRAIGHT: ANTHONY PERKINS
By Brian Baxter
By the time he struck gold with Fear Strikes Out the young, gawkily handsome Tony Perkins had made several high profile movies including The Actress and Friendly persuasion. But his intense performance as the baseball player, driven to near insanity by his father’s obsession with success, earned him rave reviews and established the persona and style which was to become his trademark – most notably as Norman Bates in Psycho and its three spin-offs. None other than Tab Hunter (last month’s profile) had created the role in Fear two years before in a television drama. The handsome duo were lovers and Hunter visited the movie set. He notes in his autobiography that the reception from cast and crew was not cordial - possibly because of his earlier success in the role or because the Tab and Tony relationship was a step too far for conservative Hollywood circa 1956.
My ‘encounters’ certainly confirm the last comment. The first was on the set of Murder on the Orient Express (1974), as part of a press visit at which Lord Snowden was to photograph a feature colour spread for The Sunday Times, including a group picture of the famous cast: Albert Finney, Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Richard Widmark, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Lauren Bacall and the elusive Mr P.
The actors were in their twenties and for the rest of Perkin’s short life (he died of Aids in 1992, aged 60) he enjoyed the more substantial career, if not happier life. They remained friends and Hunter spoke to him on the day of Tony’s death. Perkin’s drew heavily on his own character in many films: not of course, to the extremes of the murderous Norman but in his shyness, his hesitant delivery, nervy eye movements and his erratic behaviour.
When the group, including other luminaries, was assembled, he was the only one missing. Crew members were dispatched to locate him and his make-up man found him cowering in a cupboard, seemingly frightened of the event.
40
On a later occasion, he was the guest of honour at the Ghent Film Festival that was premiering Psycho 111, which he starred in and directed. He was given a limo, a handsome driver, and one late evening turned up at the city’s main gay
club where we were enjoying drinks. He came in, stood in a corner, an intense, lanky statue with those expressive eyes never making contact. Sadly, no one had the courage to speak to him and he left 30 minutes later. No doubt, such stories are replicated throughout his long career of 60 plus films and television dramas, including two as director and one as cowriter. The screenplay credit is fascinating since it marks the only one by the brilliant – and gay - composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim. Quite what their relationship extended to is open to speculation, but the result- The Last of Sheila- is a black comedy, with a starry cast enticed on to a luxury yacht with lethal consequences. The dialogue is bitchy, the setting glamorous and the story inconsequential and high camp. Perkins was ambitious and intelligent and found Hollywood constricting, leaving for the more liberal and fulfilling milieu of Europe. Films made there included
two for Claude Chabrol and on one of these, Ten Days Wonder, he worked with Orson Welles. They collaborated on The Trial and it is arguable that no part suited the actor better than that of K. True there were disasters during this period, including Phaedra and the not exactly great, Is Paris Burning? Some television drama in Britain and other movies enhanced his erratic career. Eventually he returned to the U.S.A. and ended his career in a mix of television work and movies, inevitably best remembered as Norman, although there had been good roles in The Tin Star, Pretty Poison and Winter Kills among others. To the surprise of many, he married in 1973 and he and Berry Berenson had two children. He continued to have psychotherapy for many years and managed to keep working until just before his death. His wife died nine years later in the ill-fated plane, which was hi-jacked then brought down by its passengers on September 11th, heading for Washington. 41
ASK KA DARI
Smiles. People seem to become almost as good as they can be, then they appear to self-destruct. The cause can be anything from drugs to mental illness to problems at home. You are a very good friend indeed to want to reach out to him. Before you do, however, you have to be sure that your friend understands that he has morphed into someone quite different than he once was. A few gentle and empathetic words of kindness like “Is there any special reason why you have become such a prick?” or “Aren’t you getting any lately?” might help him put his attitude into perspective.
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com Dear Darika, Woke up earlier than normal this morning and found my bf’s iPhone plugged in next to the coffee pot. It was making some kind of alarm noise. I turned it on to make it stop and immediately saw about twenty instant messages from other guys. All of them suggested some kind sexual activity they wanted to do with him (sometimes “again”). Shocking stuff. He chats every night while I am making dinner. Now I know what he is up to. I have not confronted him about this. How should I handle it? Keep quiet, get your own iPhone and suggest that he do the cooking for a change. And if you are not getting the shocking 42
things his friends asked for (again), it’s time to put them on the dessert menu. Pa Darika, So there is this guy who I work with who has always been happy, friendly and does his work well. Lately he has “gone loopy” like my boss said. His personality has turned around 180 degrees. He has become abusive and threatening he complains a lot and he can’t finish his work. We have hanged out a lot over the last three years. I really want to help him out before he ruins his life I do not know where to begin. Can you help? Darika has frequently seen dramatic changes of behavior in the Land of
All you can do is let him know that you are concerned and want to help. If he is having problems with family, a relationship or money, he will probably open up. If not, the problem may be substance abuse or mental illness His behavior could be caused by something as simple as a tiny chemical change in the brain that can be easily controlled with medication If substance abuse is the issue he may have to spend time in a special facility. There is an excellent resort-style establishment near Chiang Mai where people who want to kick whatever habit they have can get professional help in a relaxed environment with yoga, massage and healthy food. (Write me if you want details. Darika goes occasionally to deal with her addictions to Sang Som, fried food and sex.) Since you are not a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist all you can do except to help your friend understand his behavior is alarming, that his problems can be
solved, and that he needs to do something before he loses his job and ruins his life. Maybe it would help to leave a copy of this magazine on his desk with my Ask Darika marked. Pa Darika, Over a recent long holiday weekend my 25 year old sister bought her first “serious boyfriend” to visit me. To my horror, he is the guy that I “see” whenever I have to work in Pattaya. Together we have reached the next-to-last page of The Gay Kama Sutra. What should I do? Tell her about him/us or say nothing? As I ponder your letter for the umpteenth time quite a few questions float to the surface. To begin with, what was your friend’s reaction when Little Sister introduced you? Where did she meet him? Was he wearing a number at the time? And why is she just having her first “serious” relationship at 25? Obviously your shared playmate is a gigolo and he will disappear from the scene in short order. Your sister’s dignity and yours should be your primary concern. I suggest that you present her with a giant pair of scissors and ask how she would like to divide the young man into equal portions. (Please take the scissors away afterwards.) And make it clear that if the two of them visit again you expect conjugal rights. Your young gentleman probably would not show up anyway. He has not accomplished so much in life by being that stupid.

Truvada Offers Hope of HIV Prevention
By Doc John
Truvada is a combination of two anti-HIV drugs. The once a day tablet so far has only been approved for use in the USA and is not available in other countries. It is an expensive drug costing US$14K a year, it is inevitable that its use will be restricted to partners of people who are already HIV positive. Despite the possible benefits there are those who object to the use of Truvada on the grounds that it will devalue HIV prevention programmes. They also claim that those prescribed the drug should be HIV tested to ensure they are not HIV positive. Truvada is not a magic bullet; in untested but positive partners HIV may become resistant to the drug. There are health concerns too; Truvada can cause kidney disease with lessor side effects including diarrhoea, generalised pain and weight loss. 44
A recent study in a prominent American medical journal claimed 75-percent success rate at preventing HIV infection to uninfected partners. It is possible then that Truvada could be a significant player in HIV prevention programmes. This figure has to be seen in the light of advice that condoms should still be worn when taking Truvada. The global view of new HIV infections shows a mixed picture with rates reducing in Africa because of effective sexual health advice that promotes the use of condoms, an increase in the rate of circumcisions and teens delaying sex. However, in the US, in large parts of Europe and in East Asia the rate of infection remains constant or increasing. Truvada may not be the complete answer to HIV prevention but it is a start.

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include Lomchoey Massage and The Prince’s Men’s Spa, is the relaxed atmosphere. Balcony Pub is a popular watering hole and if meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar. Up2 Salon and Cutey & Beauty will make you beautiful! Bangkok Babylon is a popular landmark and nightowls party at DJ Station. The Malaysia Hotel is also a favourite. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse, coming to Bangkok soon. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly 46
Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! Visit The Podology Centre for a full range of medical footcare. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand. com

OUT in Koh Samui J
Jungle covered hills, secluded beaches the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys. Kick back; recharge in spas, lounge around villa pools, beach walks, sip cocktails in a beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit. Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening.
The center of gay day/nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end, opposite Nora Beach Resort, is Emerald Green Mens Club focused on high quality massage and body treatments. Opposite Akyra Resort is Tropical Fah Samui & Cafe/Bar massage, drinks, snacks, event evenings & Rainbow Scuba & Tour agents. Top Ten restaurant opposite lyara Resort serves Pacific rim cuisine while Otaru Sushi has reasonably priced sushi. Near Solo Bar is K Club & Together Massage drinks, take away staff and massage. For ladyboy/gay Cabaret shows, check out Starz Cabaret and Moulin Rouge. While Green Mango and Sweet Soul mixed disco/bars are still popular with gays, ARK Bar on the beach - pool, food, DJ’s - is a trendy haunt for gays in a young, international, mixed crowd. South Chaweng, opposite Trade Winds Resort, is Mekkala Men Spa & The Site Bar rejuvenating massage and evening drinks and Hard To Forget massage, opposite Centara Beach Resort. Above Chaweng Lake is 56
- dress for it - Q Bar dance club & food. Chaweng Food Market is famed for low cost, Asian & Western no frills restaurants. The original Mekkala Men Spa is near Big C in Bo Phut is restful, Tropical Garden Lounge Resort and charming Fisherman’s Village for beach side restaurants and their Friday evening Walking Market. Saboey Resort and Villas is set in a Bangrak beach side tropical garden. Further around in Choeng Mon is Saiwon Mens Spa massage then back towards Chaweng, opposite Karma Resort, Banyan House Coffee Garden & Restaurant. On the other side of Samui, Nathon has many restaurants. Close by, the swanky, Euro glam Nikki Beach Samui poolside Sunday brunch party is a must for gays and young cool straights – take Speedos’. For all venues, check out our maps and listings, www.gaykohsamui.net www. gay-samui.com and www.out-in-thailand. com

OUT in Chiang Mai C
Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom is renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations.
Try the superb La Fourchette and Chez Marco (both French) and Prego (Italian & Thai) restaurants inside the moated, old city walls and the inviting Yokka Dok Bar/ restaurant. Just outside the wall is the excellent Miguel’s mexican restaurant. Mandalay Disco is a favourite with night owls. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Circle Pub has hunky guys on stage. Gemini Massage has regular promotions and is recommended. Ram Coffee & Bar is set on the river, close to the Nawarat Bridge. Nimmanhaeminda and Santitham have some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars. Check out Sangdee Gallery & Cafe and on Huay Kaew Road, you will find the excellent Soho Bar and Guesthouse who serve incomparable New Orleans food. For a work out or chill out, 60
go to The House of Male, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service, as well as the new Mansfield Residence. Club M Karaoke is a favourite. Santitham is not far away, with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping, Club One Seven has superb accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses. For a great massage and more go to The Blues Club. In San Sai you will find The Podology Centre, specialists in medical foot care. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings, www.radchada.com and www. out-in-thailand.com
PRIVATE & CENTRAL Mansfield is located within walking distance to much of the Old City and Chiangmai nightlife. Discreetly off the main thoroughfares, away from prying eyes. Close to the heart of the city, in a quiet garden setting. LUXURIOUS EXECUTIVE SUITES Executive Suites at MansField are elegantly appointed with comfortable contemporary furnishings and large en-suite bathrooms with in-room personal Jacuzzi’s. MODERN BAR & RESTAURANT Mansfield provides comfortable Indoor or Outdoor Bar and Dining options with a selection of Thai and Western comfort food. OUTDOOR GARDEN & BARBEQUE GRILL Relax in the Garden by the waterfall on stylish relaxing furniture with a drink or enjoy a selection of BBQ food from the western style menu.

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets.
In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. Pattaya Hotmale is your one-stop info and cafe centre. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Spilia Karaoke at Ganymede Hotel & Sauna and P2 Lounge are worth a visit. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the luxurious Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. In Soi 70
2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar and New Sawadee Boys are popular and very friendly venues. For a massage go to Relax at Me 1 & 2 , both located on South Pattaya Road. Get away to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com

OUT in Phuket P
Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms. The disco at Boat Bar is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike. 78
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Phuket Travel Company, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. CC Bloom’s Hotel and Centara Grand Beach Resort are close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-inthailand.com
