GAY GE ARRIA
M
WE ARE NOT ALONE... The tide is changing around the world with rock stars, movie icons and politicians coming OUT in favour of GAY marriage. For all the gay guys and girls in Thailand who want to be married, listen to what is being said...
We told Boy George that we were backing a campaign for gay marriage in Thailand; he said, “I think it’s a great campaign and one that’ll empower many people with a step forward for freedom in their lives.”
Barack Obama: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.”
Lady Gaga: “Let’s inspire them [politicians] to be modern … get on with gay marriage. “I feel the denial of gay marriage sends a prejudice message. Our youth deserve a fair+hopeful future with government that values us equally.” 10
George Clooney: “At some point in our lifetime, gay marriage won’t be an issue, and everyone who stood against this civil right will look outdated.”
George Takei: “We can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily.”
Brad Pitt: “Gay marriage is inevitable. The next generation, they get it. It is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.”
David Cameron (UK PM): “I just want to say I am absolutely determined that this government will be legislating for gay marriage.”
Elton John: “I have a wonderful career, a wonderful life ... [And yet] I don’t have everything because I don’t have the respect of people like the church or politicians who tell me that I’m not worthy, that I’m lesser because I’m gay. Well, fuck you!”
David Furnish: “I think we’re living in really pivotal times. Gay marriage is the next great battle ... Look at the history of civil rights relating to people’s nationality and colour.”
11
Madonna: “If I was president of the United States, legalising gay marriage would be my first port of call.”
Ben Affleck: “Marriage hasn’t been my thing. But gay people, knock yourselves out!”
Adam Levine: “ The fact that gay marriage isn’t legal everywhere at this point is a joke.”
Sir Ian Mckellen: “It’s only fair that stable gay relationships, if long standing should have the same rights and responsibilities as married couples.”
12
Jennifer Lopez: “When it comes to gay marriage, I just believe in love. I believe that when two people find each other and love each other, they should be able to spend their lives together.”
New Zealand PM John Key: “The success of our first vote on gay marriage is a strong endorsement for equality of rights.”
Janet Jackson: “ It’s two people that are in love with one another. What’s the issue?”
But this one is on his own! What was Arnie on when he said...? “I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.” Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“ It’s two people that are in love with one another. What’s the issue?” 13

What Gay Marriage Can Contribute to the Institution of Marriage Dr. Kenneth Dobson
Gay marriage is a hot issue these days. It is possibly the hottest social and political issue in the USA. The outcome of the US Presidential election could even turn on this issue (but it will probably be decided by voters who want the economy handled in a certain way). Here in Thailand there is agitation for gay civil rights as well, including the chance to get married and be eligible for the same protections as heterosexuals.
It is not appropriate for a foreign guest in the country to presume to tell Thailand how to write its laws. So I am making suggestions about benefits any society might derive from adopting gay marriage. The benefit most often mentioned is how gay couples can help preserve the institution of marriage by lowering the divorce rate 14
and restoring the principles that underlie the family. I am referring to statistics that show that in countries with a gay marriage history, the rate of divorce is lower for gay couples than for heterosexual couples. Children of gay couples also rate higher on tests of socialization and language skills.
But the proposals I want to make are not about gay marriages that perfectly mirror the ideal heterosexual marriage in terms of monogamy, romantic power, and 1.7 children (the latest Thai figure for the number of children in families with children). I want to comment on how gay marriages might change and improve the standard marriage model. The first contribution we might make would be new models of commitment. Let me put it this way, in gay marriages we may not promise everything but we mean what we promise. So our first contribution to reform the institution of marriage would be a specified commitment. Of course, this is anathema to those defending the old concept of marriage where everything is promised “until death do ye part,” but hardly anybody lives up to it. Even couples in lovely 60-year exclusive partnerships hold back on some things and shift over the years on others. Guilt is often the result, which has a corrosive effect on life. Let’s add a less guilt-ridden type of contextualized commitment. We who are in gay marriages swear to you this works well. Oh, come on, you straight couples are doing this anyhow. We’ll just help you legitimize it. Sub-point A would be about monogamy. To be brief, just agree with me that monogamy is not a very ancient concept. If your marriage really would only survive if it were monogamous, well, go that way. But on the whole I will argue that most long-term gay marriages have more openness than that and the issues
of commitment are about more important things. I can hear the shrieks already. “That’s what we mean,” I hear. “Gay marriage is a sham because it isn’t a sexual prison.” (OK, those aren’t the words they use.) But making sex the measure of a committed relationship hasn’t really protected the institution of marriage very well. We can show you a better measure of commitment. Our second contribution could be realigned patterns of relationship. First of all, we can show you several different ways to get kids, including ways with heightened levels of intentionality, to put it in polysyllabic terms. Hey, with us there are no surprises or after-thoughts. Furthermore, our children are valued and cherished because we don’t just breed babies, we have to strategize. Then we can introduce a new way of being family. It may not be for everybody. Some people are into blood lines for their livestock and themselves. For some people there’s nothing quite as thrilling as hosting a tea party for the Daughters of the Ancient Regime. But let’s say you’re not royal and succession to the throne is not a personal issue with you. You might be ready for a non-dynastic family, one composed of people with whom you have a lot in common and with whom you enjoy frequent contact. We gay sons and daughters can show you how to structure a really workable new relational pattern complete with a whole new type of kings and queens. We’ve worked it out. It’s how we have survived. 15

OUT iT Profile: Natee Theerarojanapong
He’s one of the most controversial gay activists in Thailand and his latest headline grabbing stand is for gay marriage. James Barnes met the man behind those headlines and discovered a passionate campaigner and a shrewd political animal. 16
Natee is waiting outside his house as I arrive, There is a broad smile of welcome. He is Natee by name and natty by nature; dressed in a sharp black suit he says that there is no need to remove my shoes as I enter his large teak home but I do anyway. We sit in a comfortable room that is cluttered with files and papers. The walls are a potted history of this veteran campaigner, filled with framed newspaper features that record his public life. Some are yellowed with age- experienced in handling the media, the prospect of handling another interview should not concern him but there is a frisson of excitement in the air. He was born in Suphanburi province 56 years ago and is the youngest of five children born of Chinese Thai parents. He graduated with a BA in medical technology at Chulalongkorn University before gaining a Master’s in political economy at Chiang Mai University. After a brief spell selling medical supplies, he realised that he was gay and decided to leave Thailand for the USA. “I wanted to be free and learn about my gay self,” he says. When he returned to Thailand, he says, “I was much more confident and felt able to be open about being gay.” That was when he commenced his activism, working with the White line Dance company, a jazz music troupe for youngsters troubled by drug and alcohol abuse. This coincided with the beginning of the AIDS era and soon he was called, ‘Mr Condom’; his catchphrase was, “AIDS killsdon’t be silly, get that condom on your willy!” 17
In 1989 he was awarded the Ashoke Fellow Award which was a turning point and inspired Natee to redouble his efforts for social change. “I encouraged gay people to come out and be proud. I was the first gay activist in Thailand and when I won the Utopia Award in 2000, I started a campaign supporting transgendered rights in the military.” He proved to be an aggressive campaigner, taking his case to the press and the Human Rights Commission. “When Top Charoen Optical ran a TV ad that was disparaging to transgendered people, I organised a boycott which was successful and the ad was dropped. We tried to educate the Thai media and things have started to change. For 75 years, gay people could not name their partners as beneficiaries of life assurance policies. That too has changed.” His motto is: ‘never give up.’ His latest cause is to promote gay marriage in Thailand. He heard that a lesbian couple had been refused marriage registration in Chiang Mai so he tried it himself. He and his partner of 20 years went along to register and took the media with them. “I made them issue three copies of the refusal paper and I have sent them to the Thai Human Rights Commission, the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee and the Administrative Court.” 18
Dr. Taejing Siripanich M.D., a National Human Rights Commissioner, said that Natee’s petition would be taken for examination. “If it is a case that a law is against human rights, NHRCT could present the case together with its views to the Constitution Court. This case would be considered as a public matter, not a personal matter, because it could benefit other groups, such as lesbian groups. In human rights point of view, a decision to live together should be allowed by law whatever sex the persons had. This petition was the first time for marriage registration between persons of the same sex and therefore would be a good example when a decision was made (by the Constitution Court)” Natee says that he hopes he will have the support of friends and society. “Thai people will see reason and I predict that there will be marriage equality for gay people here within five years.” Act 30 of the Thai constitution embeds gender equality and that extends to gay people in the memorandum of intent. He also calls on OUT iT readers to lend their support: “You can help. Talk to people about it, send sms messages to TV stations, hold your lover’s hand, take a deep breath and walk in your local Amphur district to register your marriage. Come out of the closet, be true to yourself and society will be better for everyone. Don’t be shy- we are all human, we are all equal and we deserve to live happily.”

Everything you need to know about Perfect Phuket!
Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of daytime pleasures and a vibrant gay nightlife. There are many beautiful beaches, some hidden away, including a gay beach in the centre of the Patong beachfront. Phuket is a popular international tourist destination, we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and the OUT iT maps, and listings to kick start your visit.
Where to stay... Phuket has an increasing number of gay and gay friendly hotels, guesthouses, and homestays, mainly concentrated in the popular resort of Patong Beach where most of the gay nightlife can be found. The first thing you have to ddecide is where you want to stay, in or outside of Patong? Or, you can do both if you don’t mind moving during your stay... it’s just an idea!
Tips for outside Patong. CC Bloom’s Hotel has just been transformed into CC’s Hideaway, a 42-room luxury full service hotel in the lush hills overlooking the Andaman Sea. CC’s has been proudly serving the LGBT community since 2005 and is a fun and friendly 20
LGBT place with regular parties, fundraisers, special buffets and events designed to bring people together. Under the same gay management and ownership, CC’s has been completely recreated with improved and expanded facilities to offer more amenities and services. CC’s offers a unique combination of breathtaking views and modern accommodation infused with traditional and modern Thai furnishings. With convenient free shuttle service to 3 of Phuket’s finest beaches: Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon, it’s easy to enjoy the best of Phuket. Completely hip and cool, CC’s is an oasis for guests seeking a respite from the crowds, heat, noise and chaos of the concrete jungle below. Natural settings combined with CC’s amenities, friendly customer service, and beautifully designed facilities makes it easy to relax.
Enjoy the expansive views from CC’s two new roof top terraces. Consistently ranked very highly in Trip advisor prior to CC’s renovations, the new CC’s will be even better. Every effort was made to retain all the same friendly staff regular guests have come to adore. In summary, SAME SAME but now MUCH BETTER! As part of the re-creation of CC’s, Thailand has been searched for skilled artisans of handmade objects d’arts, upholstery fabric, furniture and decorative pottery. Inspiration has come from details in temples across the country and the trendy art scene in Phuket town, including modern nude paintings. By working directly with the artists, a traditional lifestyle that stretches back centuries has been well supported. In the home, the women (and some men) work at handcrafts to provide additional cash for the family. Whether it is weaving, furniture
making, carving, pottery, or glaze production, the endless cleverness and industry of the Thai family prevails. In line with United Nations goals to maintain cultural diversity in world of global brand domination, CC›s is doing its part to maintain and preserve a sustainable rural lifestyle here in Thailand, that has for the most part, disappeared around the world. Guests are invited to help support these artists and craft people. Other improvements include the addition of Thai grown coffee, an expanded menu featuring predominantly organically grown vegetables and fruits, as well as the addition of many northern European and northern Thai dishes. Expected to reopen around November 17th, details will be posted on ccbloomshotel.com and their Facebook page. CC’s will be having a grand opening 21
owners Ulf & Boy. Ulf is the former owner of Connect Guesthouse in Patong and after having sold his guesthouse after 13 years he could not sit still long and so he bought his neighbour’s vila and turned it into a wonderful 5 room homestay with all the comforts of home, and more, and with an oversized swimming pool. His homestay is steadily growing into a meeting point for the island’s gays outside Patong without losing its tranquility. The service is very personal and the prices are unbelievably low. Phuket Gay Homestay organises, together with Backstage from Patong, the Men’s only BBQ Pool Parties every Saturday from around 4 pm till around 10 pm. These parties are turning into a wonderful opportunity for meeting Thais, expats, locals and tourists in a relaxed, fun and informal atmosphere around a big swimming pool, an unforgettable experience which we can honestly recommend! www.phuketgayhomestay.com .

This long established gay landmark hotel will welcome you with traditional Thai warmth and you can book online. www. siamphukethotel.com. There are many guesthouses located in front of the Royal Paradise Hotel (Paradise Complex) with a large enough diversity to be able to cater for the gay traveller who wants to stay in the centre of the action. In the main gay entertainment street is Sundowners Group, the creation of Englishman John and his partner of 12 years, Aek. “I first started holidaying in Thailand in the early nineties and my love for the beaches lured me to Phuket,” 24
says John. “We’ve managed to build a success, added the Sundowners Lounge (formally the Orchid Lounge) and the Bistro (formally known as the ATM) to our portfolio. After much soul searching we decided to re-locate ATM from the quieter back street into the busier Soi opposite the Bar and Lounge.” The Restaurant is going from strength to strength, the number of customers, both holidaymakers and expats, continue to grow in number. “I see our three current outlets (Bar, Lounge and Bistro) as complementing each other, the Bar being our Flagship with the Bistro catching up. The Group is looking to expand further and with this in mind we have already held introductory discussions with the parties concerned. The end result may not reach fruition for several years but this fits into our jigsaw perfectly.

Man by man massage.. Phuket, is also known for its Spa’s, Massage houses, big and small, and you find them all over Phuket in plenty. Every main hotel and resort has its own spa where you can choose from a variety of soothing treatments. In Paradise Complex again, in Patong, every street and walkway has an ever-changing number of massage shops, houses and spa’s. If you visit any of the M2M massage places or spa’s, make sure you know if the venue has a minimum tip-policy or not.
A few hundred baht is reasonable for a minimum tip, but more would be reason for a serious question mark! Having said that, two places jump to mind in Paradise, both with a pretty solid reputation.

Blue Dolphin Massage: Blue Dolphin has two different settings for massage: The general, kind of open massage room where several massages can take place same time or well equipped private “VIP” massage rooms with showers and toilets for a modest fee. The prices at the Blue Dolphin, like most places, are for the massages only and do not include tip!
One suggestion: if you come from the beach, treat yourself to a body massage with Aloa Vera, which is soothing and healing after a day out in the sun!

Where to Eat & Drink... Phuket, and of course Patong is full with good places to eat and drink to one’s heart’s desire. If one enjoys to do so though in a gay setting then one, again, quickly finds oneself in Paradise Complex next to venue’s like CC’s Hideaway or Club OneSeven. 27
Paradise has many food stalls and restaurants, serving typical Thai food and some outstanding western food. Two very different places stand out: Le Bistro restaurant, part of Sundowners Bar and Sundowners Lounge, where you can enjoy an excellent breakfast, lunch or dinner. Its located opposite cabaret go-go bar My Way , so during second half of the evening you will be entertained by what is going on in the street. Like everywhere the Thai food is simply good but Le Bistro is specially known for the quality of its English/western dishes! Customers have nicknamed Backstage, ‘The bar that dares to be different,’ and they adopt it as their motto. So it pays to keep an eye out for their activities or simply pay them a regular visit while in Patong. Cabaret & Ladyboy Shows Phuket is famous for its ladyboys who enjoy showing their creativity and dancing. Phuket now has four, very different show/cabaret theatres and if you enjoy a Broadway style production catering for all corners of the world, then Phuket is
the island to visit! Simon Cabaret in Patong Beach is known for one of the best theatre-ladyboy shows in Thailand. The show is regularly updated and tickets can be bought almost anywhere. Simon now also opened up a theatre in Phuket Town, called Simon Star, to deal with the appeal the Simon Shows have on the visitors from all over the world. Siam Neramit opened its doors this year in Phuket Town and is quickly creating its own appeal and there is the also recently opened Aphrodite Theatre. Those gay enterprises, who complain that business is down, despite the Reuters survey earlier this year, identifying Thailand as the world’s number one gay destination, are the ones whose business models are frozen in the 1980’s. They have failed to recognise that the market has moved on. The international gay traveller has changed too. Fortunately, there is a new wave of quality concerns that have taken note and Koh Samui’s Saboey Resort and Villas is a fine example, already winning a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2012. 32
Saboey is beautiful, secluded and designed to maximise serenity, space and privacy. It is set in lush tropical gardens and landscaped around a stunning double-infinity freshwater pool and cascading Jacuzzi, which both allow a stunning seamless view onto the sea. The Blue’s Max
Max Nathayut is 36 years old but looks 10 years younger. That youthful appearance is evidence that the highly popular, inexpensive facial treatments at The Blues Club, Massage for Men by Men, really work. Max has been running The Blues Club for seven years with his cousin, Blue. 36
“We used to sell handicrafts in Bangkok but we learnt all about massage and decided to open this business in Chiang Mai,” says Max with a warm smile. Blue designed the whole place and has provided an object lesson in the sophistication of contemporary Lanna Thai style. There are six luxurious, private, massage rooms, all soothing, sensual and filled with gentle aromatherapy scents. Each is air-conditioned and softly lit with a continuous soundtrack of calming music that pervades the senses and immediately casts you off, drifting into a secret world where problems dissolve and relaxation is the watchword. There is a crew of stunningly good-looking guys for you to choose from but if none of these young men tickles your fancy, ask to see the Blues Club book that is a catalogue of masseurs who will be there for you before you have finished your drink. The unforced friendliness here will knock your socks off (that will save you a job!). There is a genuine desire to ensure that you not only have a great time but also come back for more. Max reckons that 70% of his customers are local Thai men- can there be a better
recommendation? This return business is a reflection of the high level of service and the gorgeous design detail of Blue. Max has shrewdly kept the prices very low. “To get the full benefit from facials, we suggest a weekly treatment session, so the fees have to be affordable.” The massage options are many, including an out call service. Thai, aroma oil or spa cream, two hands or four! Full body scrubs are offered, along with a comprehensive range of packages and promotions to fulfil your every need and satisfy your every desire. It is a good idea to check out The Blues Club website or just visit and have a chat with Max who guarantees OUT iT readers an especially warm welcome. Moscow: History, Onion Domes and Change by Pied Piper
One of the most intense feelings I have experienced took place on a bitterly cold February morning back in 1987. Although the temperature was –20 celsius, I was well insulated from the weather as my young guide gave me a quick tour of Moscow. Guides then were mandatory, for this was the Soviet Union and the Cold War had not yet been banished to history. As a western visitor to a state agency, I had to be chaperoned, my every move reported back to someone, somewhere. To my hotel, the Ukraine, one of six almost identical skyscrapers Stalin had had built around the city, I brought the obligatory bath plug, along with a dose of John Le CarrÊ paranoia about the microphones I knew were hidden somewhere. 40
Yet, if life in the hotel was far from comfortable, the chance to be shown some of the city was the bonus. Walking into snow-covered Red Square, an overpowering sense of history flooded over me. This was the heart of Russia. This was the location of the centuries-old fortress, the Kremlin, then the seat of Soviet power, with its massive red fortified walls and stunning cathedrals. Here thousands lined up each day for the few fleeting seconds it took to pass by Lenin’s ghostly white embalmed face, and here the world witnessed those tightly choreographed May Day displays of Soviet military muscle and hardware. In earlier days, this was where most of the Tsars had been crowned. Apart from its own bloody history, this was the symbol of Russia’s dogged resistance to Napoleon and Hitler. Red Square exuded an extraordinary sense of history I had rarely felt elsewhere.
I returned to Moscow in 2011 to attend a Conference and revisit much I had forgotten about the city. This time, my only accompaniment was the indispensable DK Eyewitness Top Ten Guide. With just three free days to pack as much in as possible, there really is no need to bother with more expansive guidebooks. My single entry tourist visa cost around Bt. 2,250 (US$72). Arrival in Moscow was at Domodedovo to the south of the city, an airport that is far from traveller friendly. Early in the morning, Immigration was not as bad as I’d expected, but bliss compared to the mad scrum of humanity jostling each other at my early evening departure! As everywhere in Moscow, taxis are hit and miss, a few with meters, many without. So I opted for the Aeroexpress train which departs every half hour for the 45-minute ride to Paveletsky station. This 41
is on Moscow’s extensive subway system, so provided you don’t mind lugging bags up and down some steps, it will get you close to many of the city’s hotels. For the Conference, I was in the luxury of the nearby Swissôtel. With rooms as comfortable and well-appointed as any in the city, the glory of the hotel is its 34th floor City Space Bar (listed in the 2011 World’s 50 Best Bars). With panoramic views, it also offers its own special attraction – waiters and barmen as cute as you’ll find anywhere! Indeed, our waiter Pavel told us the barmen regularly win national competitions (just for bar tending, that is)! The subway is one of the glories of the Soviet Union, its stations decorated as you see them nowhere else. And subway is an appropriate name, for the escala42
tors seem to descend forever! Candelabra, stained glass, mosaics and intricate plasterwork are just some of it glories. The most magnificent is arguably Komsomolskaya, worth a quick stop even if you do not leave the platform. To save queuing, buy a 10- or 20-ride ticket (averaging less than US$1 per ride). Red Square is the heart of the city and this and the surrounding area will easily take up a whole day. For your first visit, enter through the gate at the north end and amble slowly down to St. Basil’s Cathedral with its brightly-coloured spikey onion domes, a veritable icon of the city itself. Then turn left into Ulitsa Il’inka. Soon you come to the small, picturesque Romanov Palace of the Boyars. Turning left again, there are colourful streets and more churches before you emerge near
the magnificent façade of the Bolshoi Theatre. Now turn left again and cross in front of Red Square. You’ll see one of the few statues of Karl Marx, but your destination now is Cathedral Square in the Kremlin Palace with the Ivan the Great Bell Tower and several stunning golden-domed Cathedrals. Here, too, is one of the world’s great Museums, the Armoury, displaying many of Russia’s great treasures – gold and silverware, jewels, weaponry, precious textiles and embroidery, state regalia, royal carriages, and some of the extraordinary Eggs which the master jeweler Fabergé created for the last of the Tsars. But do first check with your concierge about opening times, for this is not-to-be-missed.
The Kremlin is situated on the banks of the Moscow river. For another half-day, wander south of the Square to the area between the river and Paveletsky station. On and near Ulistsa Bol’shaya Ordynka and Pyatnitslaya Ulitsa are some lovely smaller churches where you will probably come across an Orthodox service in progress. It’s perfectly acceptable to wander in, although photos are usually not allowed. You don’t even need a map. Just look at the skyline and make for the onion domes! Here, too, is the famous Tretyakov Gallery with its unique collection of Russian art. Just west of the Kremlin is the city’s largest church, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. After being torn down by the Soviets, it was rebuilt in the Yeltsin years. This was where the Pussy Riot girls held 43
their protest last year. Personally, I don’t care for it, but you can always combine it with a visit to the nearby Pushkin Museum and its wonderful collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art. The historical and trendy Arbat district is just a little further on. But beware! The area is somewhat tacky, the cafes and restaurants are pricey, and you need to watch your wallets. Another day, take the subway to the extraordinarily beautiful Novodevichiy Convent complex. The Cathedral with its beautiful wall of icons (the iconostasis), many endowed by Boris Godunov in the 16th century, is usually open to visitors, as is the cemetery to its south. And this cemetery is definitely worth visiting, for here you will find the ornate gravestones of a panoply of outstanding Russians: playwrights like Anton Chekov, the great composers Shostakovich and Prokofiev, poets, dancers, musicians and artists set 44
amidst those of Cold War veterans like Nikita Kruschev. In the evening, the superbly refurbished Bolshoi Theatre presents world-class opera and ballet, well worth a visit whatever is being performed. Also recently refurbished is the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall at the Moscow Conservatoire. If the marvelous Russian National Orchestra has a concert, don’t miss it! Moscow has so much more to offer than can be covered in one short article. It is expensive and so try to book your hotel early after checking for the best deals. I spent my last two nights at the Holiday Inn Express Simonovsky – good value with a great breakfast, close to the subway and in an interesting area. But wherever you choose to stay, immerse yourself in a bit of history before your trip, and then prepare to be amazed as much of that history unfolds before you.
URE VENT OUT
OUT on the Road
By Adam Preston
If you are hiring a motorcycle or car during your stay in the Kingdom, you may be wondering why you have to drive on the left when right hand drive neighbours surround Thailand. Thailand shares long borders with Burma, Laos, and Cambodia—all of which drive on the right, whereas the border with leftdriving Malaysia is a short stretch.
Traffic rules were introduced in most countries at the turn of the 19th century. Before that, everyone used the roads more or less as they liked but with increasing traffic that led to more and more problems, even when only horses and carts were involved. Governments had to come up with traffic rules to create order on the roads and naturally these rules started first in the most “developed” countries, i.e. Western Europe. As these rules spread around the world, the influence of European colonial powers played an important role in deciding what traffic rules a dependent territory would follow.
Myanmar (Burma) was a British colony until 1948, and drove on the left until 1970, when it changed sides. The ruler of the country, Ne Win, consulted a soothsayer or interpreted a dream to mean that all traffic should keep to the right. However, there are still many old cars and buses and almost all the modern cars are second hand imports from Japan, so virtually every vehicle is right hand drive. You can still see old traffic lights in downtown Rangoon on the wrong side of the road.
So what about Thailand, which was never under foreign rule? Why did Thailand opt for the left side? It seems there are no hard facts but many clues. The SiaIndochina (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) mese probably had better political and were French, so they drive on the right. economic relations with British Malaya Malaysia and Singapore in contrast than French Indochina. They had territowere British, so they drive on the left. rial disputes with both, but probably the Indonesia was first Dutch then British so animosity with France was much greater now drives on the left. Philippines: Span- especially considering issues like Angkor Watt, which once belonged to Siam and ish then American therefore right. 46
was ceded to France. Siam also ceded territory on the Malay Peninsula to Britain but without violence and bloodshed. It also seems likely that the Thai Royalty would have had more in common with constitutional monarchies like Great Britain than republics like France. They would not want their own royal families to go the same way as the French. There is evidence of close connections between one of Thailand’s most influential and famous kings, King Chulalongkorn and the British. King Rama V was interested in modern reforms and visited both Singapore and British India during 1870–1872 to see how the British administered their colonies. He was the first Siamese King to send his royal princes to be educated overseas and both went to Britain. It seems likely that given the choice of going French or British the Thais chose the British way. Thankfully, in this case, the legendary Thai compromise did not
come into play or they may have decided to drive down the middle… You may be wondering what the original reasons were for choosing the left or the right side of the road. In the middle Ages, you kept to the left because you never knew who you may meet coming towards you and it was wise to ensure that a stranger passed on the right so you could go for your sword in case you were attacked. This custom was given official sanction in 1300 AD, when Pope Boniface VIII invented the modern science of traffic control by declaring that pilgrims headed to Rome should keep left. This system remained until the late1700’s. Large goods wagons were introduced, pulled by several pairs of horses. These wagons had no driver’s seat. Instead, the driver sat on the last horse on the left so he could use his right arm to whip all the horses. Since the driver was on the left, he wanted everybody to pass on his left side so he could look down and make sure he kept clear of the passing wagon. 47
OUT V ON T
Repeats repeated repeatedly It was good news for telly addicts when True Vision launched BBC Knowledge (ch. 22), BBC Lifestyle (ch. 58) and BBC Entertainment (ch. 149) in January 2012 but it’s all gone wrong.
Shows are shown over and over again on these channels that promise so much from the world’s number one broadcaster. Even lower grade, ancient offerings get aired with monotonous regularity and the constant trailers produce a feeling of déjà vu that is as nauseating as it is irritating. But don’t bother logging on to the Beeb’s Asian website to complain: you’ve been headed off at the digital pass. ‘Please be aware that if the answer to your question is on our site you will not 48
receive an individual response from us.’ The top questions on their FAQ’s page are: 1) Can you explain your repeat pattern? 2) What is the reason for including older programmes in the schedule? And, 3) Why do we see the same trailers again and again? There is not the space, or will, to reproduce here the unsatisfactory waffle that the BBC hopes to palm you off with in place of real answers- suffice to say that they are simply not interested in criticism and are certainly not
interested in any real personal feedback to help them to please their audience. All this is against their stated goal- ‘Our aim is to bring you the best programmes possible’ and will not foster the large ratings that they are keen to achieve in the lucrative south east Asian market. And although it is sometimes great to revisit old telly favourites but stale old sitcoms or yet another viewing of Masterchef, just doesn’t cut the mustard. 49

ACTING STRAIGHT Knightly Pursuits: Sir John Gielgud
E AT TH
By Brian Baxter
When John Gielgud, who had been knighted in the Queen’s birthday honours in June 1953, was arrested for importuning in Piccadilly that October he told the police his name was Arthur Gielgud (true in fact), aged 49 (also true) and gave his correct rather smart London address. He also said he was bank clerk on a thousand a year.
Since he was by then the most revered theatre actor in Britain, had appeared in high profile films – not least as Cassius opposite Marlon Brando’s Mark Antony in a fine Hollywood version of Julius Caesar – it was unlikely to be believed. The fact that his voice was exquisite, his bearing regal if not royal (as Kenneth Williams was wont to say) and his Savile Row suit cost more than his alleged stipend, it was not long before the press sniffed him out and he made front page headlines after being fined 10 pounds in court. The point being that homosexuality was still a crime in Britain. 50
It’s unlikely that many people were totally surprised by this ‘revelation’, even less were shocked, although it seemed – and seems – an undignified episode in the life of a great actor and uncharacteristically silly. It prompted his lover Paul Anstee to burn letters, the powerful and gay theatre impressario ‘Binky’ Beaumont to suggest that Gielgud be kept off stage for some while (he had snaffled Gielgud’s boyfriend some years before) and Johnny G. as he was known, was advised not to return to the U.S.A. for at least four years. In the event, his brother Val Gielgud – head of BBC drama- intervened with Beaumont and told him he would out him
if he did not change his mind. A while later Gielgud returned to London’s west end in a play by N.C. Hunter and on the first night received a standing ovation as he made his appearance. I like to think of it as similar to the occasion when the entertainer Harry Belafonte plunged into a Las Vegas swimming pool which was ‘off limits’ to ‘people of colour’. When the management tried to remonstrate (they had earlier closed and cleaned a pool after a similar event) whole rafts of guests jumped in in support of Belafonte who was headlining at the same hotel. Small steps in both cases, but giant steps for mankind. An early wind of change- to compound the clichés. Gielgud was a near casualty along the way but no one could doubt he was a survivor of steely power and fine intelligence. He made his screen debut aged 20 in a silent movie called Who is the Man? (1924). He was in only fifteen movies before his unhappy experience but in later years notched up well over a hundred more appearances, even receiving an Oscar for a piece of nonsense called Arthur. Many roles were cameos and many indifferent or poor – though lucrative. He kept working until he was in his nineties. He survived two films directed by Michael Winner and made rather better ones including Chimes at Midnight, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Shine, Providence and The Elephant Man. His last feature was Elizabeth, playing the Pope. He was 94. This magazine could be filled by listing his theatre and movie credits, especially the former, following his debut in The Cherry Orchard. Suffice to say that he was a truly formidable producer- direc-
tor, from the late twenties on -initially in a classic repertory - moving in later years to give magnificent performances in works by Harold Pinter (No Man’s Land), David Storey and Alan Bennett. His Hamlet was for decades regarded as definitive, although his favourite role in later years was as Prospero. He enjoyed three long-term relationships and lived with his last partner, Martin Hensler, for over 35 years until his death aged 96. He also survived the jealousy of Laurence Olivier, who envied the esteem in which Gielgud was held. Olivier – fiery, handsome, brilliant, and often flamboyant – never quite achieved the same regard among his peers. Something in which Gielgud, through his acting, direction and prolific writing (his posthumously published collected letters is a work of near genius) as well as his inestimable help to other actors such as Alec Guinness, had no equal. 51
ASK KA DARI
Precious Reader, Thank you for trusting Darika with your problem. Darika is not a doctor, although I did play one on TV, so I cannot give medical advice. After receiving your letter, however, I did speak with a real doctor who gave me a lot of information you should know.
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com
We are very happy to receive letters in Thai. The one below has been translated into English. Auntie Darika, I hope you will not be angry about my letter. I want to tell you about a problem with my body. I am a young boy just 23. I like some guy and want to have sex but the skin around the end of my penis is very tight and when I am strong it is painful. Last time there was blood. My friend recommended an operation to cut off some of the skin. I am afraid and embarrassed to go to a doctor about this. I cannot live this way for a long time. Please tell me what you think. 52
Your problem is common and is nothing to be ashamed of. You should certainly not feel bad about yourself. You are not your penis, although this is not true of some people Darika has met in the past. Aside from the obvious discomfort, you may have future problems with infections if your condition goes untreated. You have options. Darika has never been sarcastic in her column, so please do not misunderstand me when I tell you how lucky you are to still have your foreskin. This little bit of troublesome skin, although uncomfortable for you, is loaded with the kind of nerves that can make your toes curl. Circumcision (removing the foreskin with a blade), unless for religious reasons, is obsolete and unnecessary. The belief that the foreskin was somehow evil or unclean, led to mutilated millions of men who are ‘cut’. Darika has found organizations on the internet for men who want to “restore” their missing accessories by stretching the remaining skin with various devices and even tape. Stretching the existing opening of your willie may be your safest, least painful and least expensive option. However, there may be other causes for your problem. The strong “banjo string” (not my personal choice of musical nicknames), the strong ribbon of connective tissue
that runs along the underside of your penis, may be too short, thus prohibiting your equipment from finding its own true length when you are aroused. This can be fixed with a little snip in the doctor’s office. A snip of the foreskin might be just enough to free willie, so to speak. If you don’t like this idea, maybe stretching is your best option, although you need to get some help from someone with experience. Darika has found two potentially useful products: Glansie, which looks like a surgical tool, and Novoglan, which helps you stretch by inflating a tiny balloon under the foreskin. I suggest that you invite your friend to help! Since stretching should be done twice a day using lubrication and corticosteroid cream to control inflammation, this might eventually be a pleasurable exercise and bring you closer together. But please, darling, see a doctor first. Darika guarantees that he has seen plenty of penises before and won’t be surprised by anything you show him.
Precious Reader, It is perfectly healthy to get in touch with your kinky side and enjoy fantasies and fetishes, darling, as long as you do not involve anyone who is unwilling. There is nothing wrong with enjoying “warm and tingly.” Darika loves the way her silk teddy makes her feel. If you secretly hope to shock people in public places you need to deal with a bigger problem than those pills. They were not meant to be consumed every day unless your doctor says it is OK. You will never feel warm and tingly again if you are dead, darling. Perhaps you should try abstinence or alternate the blue ones with the “all weekend” pills. But that’s not medical advice, even if you see Darika on reruns of General Hospital.
Good luck and love, Darika. Dear Darika, I have developed an unusual substance abuse problem. Every morning I take one of those little blue pills. Usually I am not planning to have sex. I am happy to be single. But maybe I am hoping for sex subconsciously. I really love what it does to my big muscle down there. When the stuff kicks in it suddenly gets warm and tingly. I bought silk boxer shorts because I like how it feels when I walk. Nobody in Big C knows I am getting off just pushing the shopping cart around. Is this too weird or what?

Men’s Cancers Cancer of the testes is becoming more common in all races and the cause is unknown.
Incidence is variable between races and between countries, the population most at risk are Scandinavians between the ages of 18 and 40 with most other cases occurring between ages 20 and 54. Every man between these ages should have a testicular examination by a doctor or nurse however self-examination is easy and quick. Some men are at a higher risk, for example those with a family history or a personal history of an undescended testicle during childhood, should talk with a doctor about additional screening. Some doctors advise regular self-examination. The best time to perform an examination of the testes is after a warm shower or bath, when the scrotum is relaxed and the testes can be easily felt. Using thumb and fingers gently feel for the most common sign of testicular cancers: hard painless lumps, smooth bumps, or changes in size or shape of the testes. 54
However, it may be the case that your regular sexual partner discovers these changes. Other signs may include: A dull ache in the groin or lower abdomen Pain or discomfort in the testes or scrotum A feeling of heaviness or pulling in the scrotum Sudden enlargement of the testes Enlargement or tenderness of the breast tissues The aim of treatment for cancer is to cure it and the majority of testicular cancers are treated either with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or with any combination of them. Emotional support is vital to the well-being of the man and to his eventual recovery. The help of a trained health worker or counsellor is highly beneficial in providing strategies to overcome difficulties in self-esteem, depression and in sexual functioning.

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.
Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include Lomchoey Massage and The Prince’s Men’s Spa, is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar. Up2 Salon and Cutey & Beauty will make you beautiful! Night owls party at DJ Station. The Malaysia Hotel is also a favourite. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse, coming to Bangkok soon. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly 56
Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! Visit The Podology Centre for a full range of medical foot care. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com

OUT in Koh Samui J
Jungle covered hills, secluded beaches the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys. Kick back; recharge in spas, lounge around villa pools, beach walks, sip cocktails in a beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit. Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening.
The center of gay day/nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end, opposite Nora Beach Resort, is Emerald Green Mens Club focused on high quality massage and body treatments. Opposite Akyra Resort is Tropical Fah Samui & Cafe/Bar massage, drinks, snacks, event evenings & Rainbow Scuba & Tour agents. Top Ten restaurant opposite lyara Resort serves Pacific Rim cuisine while Otaru Sushi has reasonably priced sushi. Near Solo Bar is K Club & Together Massage drinks, take away staff and massage, a few doors along is Gaypoint bar, food, no take away staff. For ladyboy/gay Cabaret shows, check out Starz Cabaret and Moulin Rouge. While Green Mango and Sweet Soul mixed disco/bars are still popular with gays, ARK Bar on the beach - pool, food, DJ’s - is a trendy haunt for gays in a young, international, mixed crowd. South Chaweng, opposite Trade Winds Resort, is Mekkala Men Spa & The Site Bar rejuvenating massage and evening drinks and Hard To For66
get massage, opposite Centara Beach Resort. Above Chaweng Lake is - dress for it - Q Bar dance club & food. The original Mekkala Men Spa is near Big C. In Bo Phut is restful, Tropical Garden Lounge Resort and charming Fisherman’s Village for beach side restaurants and their Friday evening Walking Market. Saboey Resort and Villas is set in a Bangrak beach side tropical garden. Further around in Choeng Mon is Saiwon Mens Spa massage then back towards Chaweng, opposite Karma Resort, Banyan House Coffee Garden & Restaurant. On the other side of Samui, Nathon has many restaurants. Close by, the swanky, Euro glam Nikki Beach Samui poolside Sunday brunch party is a must for gays and young cool straights – take Speedos’. For all venues, check out our maps and listings, www.gaykohsamui.net www. gay-samui.com and www.out-in-thailand. com

OUT in Phuket P
Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. The Backstage now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms and the Dolphin Hotel is a landmark.. The disco at Boat Bar is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike.
90
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them, Loveli Boutique Guesthouse and Siam Hotel are just 75 metres from Jungceylon Mall.
