Gore Vidal died on July 31, 2012. Another giant passed from the land. We were privileged to have lived among them, these men like Vidal, Mann, Warhol, Capote, Isherwood, Forster and Foucault. Gore Vidal’s great contribution for gay readers was The City and the Pillar. Alan Cheuse says, “…the sexual revolution began on January 9, 1948, to be precise when this modestly presented realistic novel about ferocious desires was first published.” 1948 is as good a date as any other to call the beginning of the American sexual revolution, although Michael Bronski in A Queer History of the United States traces the cultural-literary roots much farther back. Nevertheless, Vidal scored a breakthrough with his openly gay-themed novel. There was a lot of ferment going on in the middle of the twentieth century, but Vidal did something bold that then made courage fashionable. Maurice by Forster was bold, but Forster was not as courageous in 1914 as Vidal was in 1948. Forster withheld publication of Maurice until after his death

in 1971. Forman Brown’s Better Angel written in 1931 is a happy, gay, coming of age story. But it was first issued under the pseudonym of Richard Meeker and did not light the fires that Vidal lit. Speaking of fires, I doubt that The City and the Pillar was actually burned, but it was banned. The archaic obscenity laws of Australia, for example, can trace their change to a challenge in court by Dennis Altman due to the confiscation of this very book. The revolt was spreading. Jim Willard, Vidal’s main character, is an unlikely gay role model. Men did not in 1948, nor do they now, finish reading The City… and decide, “I can dare to be like that.” Jim is flawed. He is interesting but ultimately unattractive because of his fixation on a single homosexual episode with his boyhood friend Bob that Jim cannot get beyond until he has reconnected with him. Jim’s life is entirely directed toward getting

back together and going on with Bob. Readers are interested in Jim because he is insightful in his reflections, as is Holden in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye written about the same time (1945), but not attracted to these non-heroes. Instead, people finished reading The City… and realized, “There is a gay world out there.”

Vidal said that the “World—the City” was the center of interest for the book. The City… tended to confirm the rumors that gay sub-cultures existed in Los Angeles and New York City, at least. If so, then the rumors might be true about exotic places like Bali, Berlin, Buenos Aries—almost anywhere. Perry Brass, a gay author and chronicler of gay life in New York re-

members that The City… became a huge gay underground best seller, and the title became a secret codeword for gay men to identify each other: “Have you read The City and the Pillar?” “Friend of The City and the Pillar seeking same.” The story is about Jim, who is male, athletic and powerful, handsome, straight-looking, and homosexual. He may not be an ideal role model but his is an alternative masculinity. Jim defied the gay stereotypes; and that was brave of Vidal. Once it had been so clearly portrayed, there was no more denying the reality that some men do love only men, and there is no small number of them. Alfred Kinsey’s revolutionary study published the very same month as The City… shocked the world with astounding statistics about how many. It was Vidal who drew a believable portrait of the man behind the stats. His character is so well drawn that Vidal was amused to find critics insisting that The City…, like by Brown, was autobiographical. The message was clear: There are other men like you and there are places they live together. Thus the migrations began, the courage became contagious, the discontent became unacceptable, and the gay revolution began.

Happy Birthday OUT in Thailand! As we see in 2013 and wonder how long those New Year’s resolutions will last, OUT in Thailand Magazine celebrates a happy second birthday with a look at our top stories in an eventful year.

Last January, we announced all the Reader’s Choice Awards winners. Not only are the OUT iT Awards a welcome pat on the back for businesses and individuals who have gone the extra mile to serve the gay community but are also a great guide for first time visitors to the Land of Smiles. We celebrated our first birthday with the release of ‘OUT in Thailand’, a single performed by sexy songster, Justin Pascua who toured the country with a string of successful gigs called ‘A Night OUT in Thailand’. This year has seen him record his second OUT iT track: ‘Holiday 14

Beach.’ You can see both tracks on You Tube and download from CD Baby. STOP PRESS: Justin has just recorded a third OUT iT single, ‘I Am Here For You’ for our birthday- see the sensational live performance video on You Tube. Message from Justin: “Well, it has been very busy for me after the “Nights OUT in Thailand” - I worked 5 sets a night and it got me very exhausted. I am a freelance singer.... always looking for a nice place to perform! I want to wish OUT in Thailand a very happy second birthday and all readers a very happy new year!”

In February we featured Naparuj “Call me Mond!” Kaendi. His hectic life as a model agent at one of Bangkok’s newest agencies, Zoom, is a long way from the Surin home into which he was born, 25 years ago. His English is faultless and his fashionable clothes are casual chic. “I came to Bangkok to apply for a course in fashion design at university. There were only 16 places available and 3,000 applicants. I was so lucky to be accepted- there were only two of us from outside Bangkok who got in.” His eyes glitter with delight as he recalls, “I was jumping like a monkey, so happy that I cried all the way home.” We also shone the spotlight on Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket, a newly built property at Karon Beach on the island of Phuket is now open for business. Designed in a colonial style with stunning Sino-Portuguese architecture, the hotel is the only one at Karon to be set directly at the edge of the sand. Centara is committed to gay guests, “We already have many gay guests,” says Paul Snow, the marketing man. “In 2009 we hosted the largest gay party ever held in the region with over 600 guests arriving from all over Asia to enjoy a dance party with international DJ right on the waterfront of the resort – an unrivalled success which we look forward to emulating in the future.”

Message from Paul Snow: “Centara Hotels and Resorts is pleased to sincerely congratulate Out in Thailand in this your second year of publication. Since we were featured in OUT iT, we have added and will add, many more exciting locations to our portfolio carrying the Centara name and highlighting amazing Thai hospitality including destinations such as The Maldives, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, India, Vietnam and China as well as Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya and Bangkok . In 2012 Centara Hotels and Resorts celebrated our own milestone, that being our 30th Anniversary - we embrace and support lifestyle diversity and the rights of all people to share their own unique and valuable thoughts and creativity. HAPPY BIRTHDAY OUT in Thailand!” 15

2012

Our March cover story was awardwinning journalist and gay rights activist, Paisarn Likhitpreechakul who took time out of his busy schedule to talk to James Barnes about his life and work. Some consider his views to be explosive: he is at the spearhead of a new generation of gay Thais who demand to be heard. The National Lesbian and Gay Federation of Ireland with the GALA International Prize, honoured Paisarn as Gay Rights Activist of the Year sponsored jointly by Amnesty International (Irish section), Front Defenders, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and the National Lesbian and Gay Federation. Paisarn was also awarded the prize for Gay Activist of the Year in OUT iT’s first national awards. Message from Paisarn: ““Happy Birthday, Out in Thailand! Congratulations for your tremendous successes and thank you for being a friend and advocate for Thailand’s LGBT community!” 16

Shlomi Refaeli is an Israeli writer who is telling a new story in a new medium: a touching documentary film set in the stunning scenery of Pai- the beautiful rural retreat that draws thousands of tourists to the north of Thailand. Shlomi spoke to James Barnes about his life and the movie, ‘Big Talila’. Message from Shlomi: “Since the article in OUT iT we have had donations of USD 1,610 which has enabled us to keep shooting. We now need to buy strong computer to edit. Many thanks to all donors and you can see more at www.bigtalila.com and a very happy birthday to OUT iT- the best gay mag ever!”

March also saw the debut of the planet’s first gay superhero; The light-footed Adventures of Bash Helmet- he’s OUT to Save the World! Packed with more double entendre than a book of chat-up lines, this hilarious comic strip was an instant hit.

Another good-looking gay Thai professional graced ourApril cover. Maysa Dumrus, like so many Thai guys, looks so much younger than his 35 years. His handsome good looks are topped with a Mohawk hairstyle, his smile is enchanting and although he is a singular talent, he is modest and shy. He delayed the interview with some admin and only sits down to talk after some gentle persuasion- he answers every question with grace and thoughtfulness. Excellent coffee is set on the stylish table at ‘Designers Baan’, Chiang Mai, where he presides over a unique interior design business with boss, Vincent Chye. Message from Vincent Chye: “Great to hear Out Magazine is turning 2! We look forward to many more good years of wonderful articles from OUT iT Magazine. It’s a joy always! At Designers Baan, we have separated our fashion cushions and accessories to Designers Baan boutique close to the main tourist belt - a small shop at Bantawai. I wish you wonderful success for OUT iT!”

Musicologist Jai Pee started his superb series on Thai music in this issue. These articles have been so well received that they are now reprinted in the UK and US.

May saw yet another major scoop for OUT iT. After a year long campaign, Lady Gaga finally agreed to a concert in Bangkok and we were there for the interview! She involves herself with and LGBT activism, which is just one reason for her popularity with gays, worldwide. She says that the ‘Born This Way’ album is about being reborn: “Sexuality is just one very small part of it and I think it’s interesting to see the way people latch on to words. You say the word gay in a song and suddenly all the other words float away and the focus goes in just one word. I’m happy that everyone focused on that word, though. It’s an important word to liberate. The latest album is about rebirth in every sense. It’s about being able to be reborn over and over again until you find the identity inside of yourself that defines you best for who you are, that makes you feel the most like a champion of life.” 17

2012

The June cover story was a James Bond adventure set in The Prince of Bangkok Sauna & Spa. OUT iT’s editor will not comment on how we anticipated the bisexual possibilities of 007 as featured in ‘Skyfall’. Kenneth Dobson celebrated the centenary of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars” and asked, ‘Was John Carter of Mars gay? Was Tarzan? Was Edgar Rice Burroughs? Is Taylor Kitsch? Interested gays want to know. Apparently, a lot of others want to know, too, judging by the young, female sounding names on the blogs talking about these things. 2012 saw release, finally, of “John Carter” which is Disney’s title for that same story. Why do gays care about whether these guys are gay? Why do we like to think our superheroes are gay? If you missed this great article, you can see it and all back issues at www. out-in-thailand.com 18

In July, we met Ladyboi (aka Tony Yalda). Born in Beirut, he spent the first years of his life in Athens, Greece, before his family moved to the United States, where he was raised in Chicago. He started singing at the age of two and he went on to attend DePaul University’s Theatre School to study theatre management before transferring to Roosevelt University’s Theatre Conservatory. Then to Los Angeles to pursue acting and after months of struggling, he landed his first role in Lisa Kudrow’s HBO series, “The Comeback.” Then came his first feature film, “American Dreamz,” starring alongside Hugh Grant and Mandy Moore. Ladyboi continued to star in films and television shows including “Meet the Spartans,” “Taqwacores,” and “Cyrus: Mind of a serial Killer.” Despite his success as an actor, it wasn’t long before he gave in to his first and greatest passion: music. His teen years were spent obsessing over the music of Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin. Then on one fateful day in April 2007, after hearing Amy Winehouse, for the first time, he realized that he could no longer deny this calling. Message from Ladyboi: “I want to give a big shout out to all my sexy OUT n PROUD THAI BOYS! Happy Birthday to OUT-IN-THAILAND for an amazing 2 years with many more to come! Thank you guys for all the support and love you have shown me. I have a few shows that I am prepping for in the States, so hopefully a tour in your guys’ direction real soon. AND! My album, O MY GOD, is now available on iTunes. I want to wish lots of love to my LGBT community across the pond, and to continue fighting for who you are. You are worthy of respect, equality, and love. Keep reaching for that rainbow, knowing you deserve it.”

In between swimming, sipping wine and snoozing, gay author, Patrick Everard has managed to write two novels. His first book, ‘Manila Boy’ was published in 2010 by Book Guild Publishing. The second, ‘Retribution’, has been released by New Generation Publishing and Patrick spoke to James Barnes about his life and work. Message from Patrick Everard: “Since the OUT iT feature about my gay thriller novel ‘Retribution’, I have started work on a third book. Having written about rentboys and diamond smugglers in ‘Manila Boy’ and the gritty London underworld in ‘Retribution’, my new novel takes a different path, and is the story of a haunting dictator. Sales for both ‘Manila Boy’ and ‘Retribution’ have been doing well, and both are available from www.amazon. co.uk in paperback or download format. Dear James & all the hardworking team at OUT iT, very best wishes as you celebrate your 2nd birthday. Well done to all of you for creating such a fun and informative magazine, keep up the fab work you beautiful bunch of boyz.”

Dejborbee Choosrichom is a singular guy with a unique style. He spends his time, split between Bangkok, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai but wherever he is, his art is always at the forefront of his thoughts. He shared the rich canvass of his life with James Barnes and his distinctive art provided a striking August cover. Continuing with the art theme: Was Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most exciting artists of all time, gay? And was he murdered because of it? OUT iT investigated with another WORLD EXCLUSIVE, “Wind At The Edge of the Heart” by Galen Garwood. Message from Galen Garwood: “How delightful it is to begin the second year of OUT iT’s contribution to the community. Their wonderful review of my The One-Winged Body last year is one fine example of the broad attention they give to all the issues that help sustain our gay culture in the most positive way. The book has done well and since then, a new book has been published and a new book project is in the oven. HAPPY BRITHDAY ‘OUT in THAILAND’ and many thanks for being part of our lives!” 19

2012 October celebrated Boy George’s re-

September’s cover story was Rik Barnett. He’s been called, ‘England’s Zac Efron’, but this good-looking star is set to carve out a career that is all his own with a brand new play, ‘Bosie’about Oscar Wilde’s notorious lover. Rik spoke to James Barnes in an exclusive interview. Rik Barnett is currently at work with the producer to bring his play ‘Bosie’ to the stage and eith several movie and television projects lined up for 2013 it is certain to be an exciting year. Rik has not been to the UK in over two years, so spending the Holidays with his family, in his family home in Cheshire is a more than perfect way for him to finish off his perfect year. Message from Rik: “Much love to everyone in Thailand and to all at Out in Thailand! Happy new year!” Continuing his series of travelogues, Pied Piper, our indefatigable man with a suitcase, shone an illuminating light on Taipei’s Gay Pride and we also featured, Amazing Pai-Land, a dream gay destination in the north of Thailand. 20

turn to play gigs in Bangkok and Phuket with a world exclusive interview and free tickets for our readers to his famous dance parties. George and musical cohort Marc Vedo were both frank and forthcoming. When we asked George to comment on our Gay Marriage campaign for Thailand, he said, “I think it’s a great campaign and one that’ll empower many people with a step forward for freedom in their lives.” We also featured a new organisation that has begun the epic task of tackling the challenges of HIV awareness and support in Thailand. Khun Noikorn Chimkong (Nicky) is the President of the HIV Foundation and spoke about his hopes for this fresh initiative and how you can help. Message from The HIV Foundation: “The HIV Foundation Thailand ends the year with an increase in the numbers of Thai and Burmese gay men living with HIV presenting at our door needing help. Although it’s hard to see these men in distress it leaves us with a great feeling to be able to help them with their treatment and service needs as well as just moral support! Our fundraising to support groups of Thai gay men goes slowly but strongly and we certainly wouldn’t be doing so well without the wonderful friendship of James and the team at OUT Magazine. Happy Birthday to OUT and may there be many, many more years of success for you!”

November

was our Gay Marriage Special issue and featured an exclusive interview with controversial Thai gay Activist, Natee. There was a great feature on all the best that perfect Phuket has to offer and with so many Russians visiting Thailand, Pied Piper packed his bags and went to Moscow!

November also saw recognition from

The Tourist Authority of Thailand’s, Go Thai Be Free who sent us a message saying, “Out in Thailand Magazine- you’re the most excellent gay-focus magazine in Thailand. Cheers!” 21

2012

Spectacular Showbar and Cabaret No Show Cover Charge Our December cover story was an exclusive interview with star of stage, screen and gay activism, Sir Ian McKellen. He was excited to hear of the campaign for gay marriage in Thailand: “There is a fair indication that Thailand will join the rest of the world in this,” he says. “Marriage belongs to the people who want it, NOT the church. There are so many countries that are backward- just look at Russia- and this initiative in Thailand gives the people there the chance to lead the way.” His tone is powerfully authoritative: “We are right. Remember, we have the moral high ground here. It is not often that any cause can claim this but we can. Any argument for the equality of gay people is right.” 22

We ask him if he has ever visited the Kingdom. “No, I have never been to Thailand and I have never been married!” he laughs. “But I do have a dear friend who has recently emigrated there so I may find myself there for a visit.” We ask him to let us know when he is due so that we can find him a beautiful Thai husband. He roars with laughter: “Now that sounds like a wonderful idea!” Don’t forget, if you missed any of these stories, you can get all our back issues at www.out-in-thailand.com And so to 2013! This year will see more great interviews, fab features and luscious photo spreads, so keep your monthly date with OUT iT Magazine. We wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous year.

“PRAGUE: THE GAY HEART OF EUROPE” You might think that, separated by 8,500 km and a world of cultural differences, Thailand and the Czech Republic would have little in common. But, as many gay travellers know, both are home to some of the most attractive young men on the planet. Both, too, boast lively gay scenes that are rather more alike than might at first be imagined.

Every year Thailand’s thriving gay bars and clubs demonstrate their enduring appeal to guys from all over the world. In particular, the Kingdom’s many go-go and host bars cater to travellers in search of brief, fun, no-strings-attached encounters. The unabashed visibility of Thailand’s commercial sex scene is one of its most striking features. In huge contrast, facilities for paid-for encounters in Europe, North America and Australia usually exist under the radar and can be difficult for transitory visitors to locate. Until a decade ago, Amsterdam boasted a scene that to some extent mirrored the Thai template. Go-go boys from all over Europe were on hand in many bars to offer eager patrons far more than just their dancing skills. Since then, however, a moral backlash and official harassment has reduced the Dutch capital’s commercial gay scene to a mere shadow of its former self. Its place as the European 40

magnet for travellers in search of plentiful opportunities for sexual encounters with attractive young men at comparatively small cost has now been taken by Prague. In a region where many countries have yet to emerge from the dark ages of sexual intolerance and repression, the Czech Republic has long been a liberal beacon. Prague, in particular, is a self-evidently cosmopolitan and sophisticated capital city. Its citizens appear more than comfortable to acknowledge the diversity of human sexuality with little more than a nonchalant smile of tolerant amusement. As in almost all cities where gay people are largely accepted into mainstream life, Prague has a thriving scene catering for the local population. Venues range from characterful, traditional old bars to high-tech dance clubs with the most up to date playlists and sound systems - and all of them stocked with plentiful supplies of the country’s justifiably famous beer.

Every night of the week, and especially at weekends, the Czech capital’s gay scene is busy. Just like everyone else on the planet, Czech men are looking for love and in bars and clubs spread right across the old city centre and the newer outlying suburbs they are doing their best to find it. Many foreign gay couples coming to Prague can also be found joining in the fun, especially during the peak tourism periods of the summer and Christmas. There are also plenty of unattached gay visitors arriving in the city with little or no knowledge of the Czech language and not enough time to integrate into the local gay scene. For those open to the idea of paid-for sexual encounters, Prague - just like Thailand, has a range of facilities catering to their requirements. Foreign visitors are often struck by the fact that young Czech men, whether gay or straight, have virtually no hangups when it come to associating so-

cially or sexually with older guys. That welcome absence of ageist attitudes is another facet of Prague’s gay scene that will be familiar to anyone who knows how things work in Thailand. In practice, you will find plenty of guys eager to meet and socialise with older men at Prague’s host bars which, given the Praguers’ typically liberal and pragmatic way of looking at sex, are fully accepted and, indeed, valued as a legitimate part of the local gay scene. The best known are Escape to Paradise - usually referred to simply as Escape - and Club Temple. Escape (V Jame 8) is right in the centre of the city, just a couple of minutes stroll from Wenceslas Square. It is the more upmarket of the two venues - with premium prices to match - and characterises itself as a gay cabaret club. On any night you are likely to find at least twenty boys there, stripping, go-go dancing or just mingling with the customers. 41

Fine European and Thai Cuisine

You should try to be there at around midnight when it’s a tradition for all the boys to strip off completely, form a long conga-dancing line and weave their way around the customers’ tables. If you’re brave - or drunk - enough, you can even join in the line yourself! Escape is a great place to meet some beautiful eastern European boys, including a few very familiar faces from best-selling Bel Ami videos, and all of them are more than open to an invitation to get to know you better in more private surroundings. Club Temple (Seifertova 3) remains better known to many by its previous name of Pinocchio. Ten minutes walk from the city centre, it’s a much more homely place than Escape. Under the hands-on management of its American owner, Club Temple offers a giant video screen showing the latest gay porn, discreetly lit side rooms where boys can be found playing arcade games and regular weekend strip shows. There are rarely less than a dozen very amenable young men on the 42

premises - and often many more. Any of them will be more than happy to join you for a beer or two and then, perhaps, adjourn to a more comfortable location.

Mata Hari Restaurant Co., Ltd. 482/57 Moo12 Thappraya Road, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi 20150 Thailand. Telephone +66 (0) 3825 9799 Fax +66 (0) 3825 9798 info@mataharirestaurant.com

Escape and Club Temple offer the closest European approximations to the commercial sex bars of Thailand. Just like the establishments in Bangkok’s Soi Pratuchai, Pattaya’s famous Boyztown or the Paradise Complex in Phuket, they are fully accepted and valued as a legitimate part of the local gay scene by the liberal and pragmatic Czechs. If you are seeking a hotel that isn’t going to give you a hard time when you bring a friendly young man back to your room, look no further than Prague’s unique gay resort Villa Mansland (www. villa-mansland.eu). Situated in a quiet suburb only ten minutes’ metro ride from the city centre, the Villa is the city’s longest-established and best known gay hotel. With its comfortable rooms, good food, on-site spa/wellness centre and a 43

regular programme of weekend entertainment - yet more strippers - it’s a great place to stay. As an added bonus, every day from early mornings onwards, the well stocked bar attracts even more attractive young Czechs. Many of them still live at home with their families and so you won’t find them at the city centre gay venues. Nevertheless, they are all eager to meet and make friends with Prague’s gay visitors and to offer them their own unique welcome to the city. Villa Mansland owner Harry Niessner a frequent visitor to Thailand - has witnessed the development of the Prague gay scene for more than twenty years. “There is no question that Prague is the gay heart of Europe right now”, he says. 44

“Czech people are well known for their liberal attitudes and have taken the capital’s annual Gay Pride celebrations to their hearts. “At the same time, gay visitors from abroad are discovering facilities that cater to all tastes and anyone who feels comfortable with the way that Thailand’s gay scene operates will be quite at home in Prague. “Just like Thailand, it’s a place that guarantees anyone, whatever their age and outlook, a great time in the company of some of the best looking and friendliest guys in the world.” Deutsche Version bitte siehe folgenden Link: www.presseinfo.eu

OUT at the MOVIES\ Annual Awards One in a Thousand By Brian Baxter

Invited by the editor to offer a 10 Best of 2012, I could see two insurmountable problems. Firstly, the derisory distribution of movies in Thailand and second the sheer volume - approaching 7,000 – of new titles registered world- wide during the past year. So just a septet of films, from among the best shown.

The vast majority of the 7000 films are intended, unsurprisingly, for local distribution. This applies to mass producers such as China, India and the Philippines as well as countries making few films such as Burma or Belgium. Many – especially in the USA – head direct to the black holes of video or television. So, favourites of 2012: a year which also offered up three preposterously exciting action movies, Skyfall, Taken 2 and The Bourne Legacy making up the ten. I doubt whether more than a couple of those listed could hold a candle to Amour (Love) by Michael Haneke, which took the Palme D’Or at Cannes last year as his previous masterpiece The White Ribbon did in 2010. Sad that the ac50

claimed works of a truly great director do not see the light of a projector in the Kingdom. 1.Argo (USA 2012/Dir Ben Affleck). The actor-director’s intelligent, low key – almost documentary style – follow up to The Town. The factually based story tells of the rescue of six Americans taking refuge in the Canadian Embassy in Iran having escaped the take- over of their Embassy. Affleck stars as the leader of a team which posed as a Hollywood film crew scouting for locations. You couldn’t make it up. 2. The Deep Blue Sea (G.B. 2011/ Dir Terence Davies). Our finest director changes tack somewhat to direct an el-

egant version of the best of Terence Rattigan’s plays. The film may be less personal in its retelling of the story of a woman who, married to an eminent judge, falls desperately in love with an RAF pilot, but It makes other British films except Ramsay’s look puny. Davies’ poetic vision and unfailing ability to get to the heart of the matter are, as always, supreme. 3. The Grey (USA 2011/Dir Joe Carnahan). A flight from Alaska crashes in a snow-locked wilderness. The survivors from the tough gang of oil workers are faced with the impenetrable landscape and the ferocious wolves which track them, gradually decimating the group, led by Ottway a hunter (Liam Neeson characteristically committed and mesmerising). Carnahan gives us a bleak and powerful portrait of men against the elements and offers a nihilistic view of spiritual belief. 4. Killer Joe (USA 2011/Dir William Friedkin). Chris, a Texan low life in serious debt to the mob, needs mother’s life insurance. Unfortunately she is still alive. With the collusion of family members he hires the local Sheriff, Joe ( Matthew McConaughey, redeeming all previous null and void performances), who moonlights as a contract killer. The job done, Joe needs payment…… Friedkin at 76 is no stranger to controversy (Cruising, The Exorcist) but his latest movie is the blackest, most visceral of his long career. 5. Killing Them Softly (USA 2012/Dir Andrew Dominik). Cogan (Brad Pitt), a hit man who does not like to get close to his victims, becomes involved in a contract on a man wrongly suspected of a crime against the mob. The course of true

death does not run smooth and extreme violence erupts. Dominik is a rare talent but the film shows evidence of cuts imposed by the producers, which lessen its still powerful impact. 6. Lawless (USA 2012/Dir John Hillcoat). Depression -era Virginia where three brothers run a bootlegging business. A Special Deputy from Chicago plus henchmen want into the profits but the Bondurant family have other plans. More extreme violence, amidst fascinating locations, and again based on fact the movie is outstandingly well acted, especially by Tom Hardy as brother one and Guy Pierce as his vicious enemy. 7. We Need to Talk About Kevin (G.B. 2011/Dir Lynne Ramsay). Those who know the best- selling novel by Lionel Shriever, will be at an advantage since the film, of necessity, pares down the complex and harrowing story of a mother faced with an unloved and unlovingly demonic son. This superb film charts the family relationships through to the savage climax and the almost cathartic denouement. As the mother Tilda Swinton gives a performance that deserved the 2012 Oscar. 51

ASK KA DARI

Pa Darika, One month ago my friend, he is not a sex friend went to (Bangkok Christian Hospital) for HIV test. He says he does not have HIV. I have HIV. I do not believe him. We go to the sauna every week and sometimes more. The hospital told me some information about medicine. I am afraid. My mother and father do not know I am a gay so I cannot take medicine to my home. I am sad about this. I want to die. Gentle Readers,

Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com

Dear Darika, I have just come from my first Thai cremation. I’ve attended funerals in my country but was unprepared for my experience today. The guy who died was 26. I’ve known him for two years. At the beginning we were lovers. Over the last two months he changed from a bright, handsome, vibrant young guy to a shriveled, helpless old man. I knew he was having health problems but I didn’t know that he had HIV/AIDS. I did not learn until this morning that he had died. I was the only farang and I did not understand any of this ceremony. I do understand that a guy who was my friend, and who I had a lot of sex with is dead. I feel helpless. What should I do?

52

As I am now in my sixties, those of my generation are sick to death of AIDS. Thirty years ago I lost more than 75 friends to AIDS, which is an experience my mother did not go through until her seventies. Science has created revolutionary treatments for HIV, although no drug to prevent or cure infection. Most people who are diagnosed positive early can take advantage of “combination therapies” (drugs) that help to insure a longer, healthier life. Over time, people of my age became weary of HIV and our tragic experiences with this disease fell on the mostly-deaf ears of the two generations that followed. “Wasn’t that cured?” Infections in some places in the US are on the rise as more and more young men have anal sex without a condom. A few years ago I had an assistant who I cherished. He was a hypochondriac, but so am I. “The weather changed so I have a cold,” is the kind of thing he used to say. I suggested that he get tested and he broke down in tears. He said he had been tested years before but never did anything about it because he was afraid that his family would reject him. Within two months he was laying in a clinic in Nonthaburi where HIV patients are

parked in the final stages of their lives. His parents and grandmother were there to care for him lovingly. He had not been rejected at all. His was my first cremation, but not my last. I have heard his story over and over, and the end is always the same. It breaks my heart. According public health officials, HIV infections among men who have sex with men have increased 11% since 1987, when infections were at their worst in the western world. The Thai Red Cross believes that two Thais are infected every hour. If you are reading this and you have had sex with anyone--no matter how often or how well you have known each other—get tested at least once a year, and insist that your sex partners do the same. Learning that you are HIV+ is not a death sentence. It is warning that you need treatment. In most cases you can have a long and healthy life. The Thai Red Cross has an anonymous clinic in Bangkok where you can get an HIV test for 80 baht, followed with counseling if test positive (02-256-4107, 02-2564108, 02-256-4109). Fasirung Clinic at Bangkok Christian Hospital (02-6259000) offers free testing. Other options are the Men’s Health Clinic at Bangrak Hospital on South Sathorn Road (02-676-5383), and Chulalongkorn Hospital (02-252-8181-9). All of these offer counseling services. You don’t need to take any ID; use a fake name, and pay cash. In Chiang Mai contact the HIV/ AIDS Resource Center (053-211-363, 053-895-166, 085-520-117) or Sangha Metta Project at Wat Sri Suphan (053201-284). Folks in Pattaya recommend Memorial Hospital.

HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis and other nasty things are a risk when you have sex with a stranger or with anyone who has. Never have sex without a condom. If you go to a sauna take your own condom(s) and waterbased lube. Some saunas don’t have condoms for customers, perhaps because they are afraid the police will conclude that people are having sex there. If you are HIV+, start treatment as soon as you can. Don’t ignore it like my assistant did. Having HIV does not mean you are gay. Plenty of heterosexuals have died from HIV. And if your mother loved you before you tested positive, she will still love you. And I love you regardless. I promise to be bitchy and amusing next month. Play safe, darlings.

Piercing the Penis

Piercing Care

Body piercing has been a fashion trend for some time and penis piercing is becoming popular. Before you have a penis piercing consider these points: Get the piercing done by a professional with a good reputation, preferably someone who has been recommended to you and who will advise you on the jewelry and piercing care. Sterilized equipment and clean premises are vital to avoid serious, life threatening diseases. Don’t perform your own piercing! You may place the piercing incorrectly or even give yourself an infection. The piercing is done when needle punctures the skin, and then a bar or ring is put through the opening. The foreskin, the skin on the shaft, the scrotum or the head of the penis can be pierced. Do not pierce straight through the shaft as this could cause serious damage. 54

CITYGUIDES LISTINGS +MAPS

•D o not remove the piercing while the wound is healing. •K eep the wound clean. •W atch for infection or allergy. •W hen having sex, wear a large, sturdy condom that has room for your jewelry and will not tear. A rash surrounding the piercing may mean that you are allergic to the metal. Surgical steel, titanium, gold or platinum are best materials. Both hepatitis B and C, and HIV can be caught from unsterilized needles. If you have any symptoms of infection, redness and soreness at the site of the piercing; a small amount of bleeding should stop when a little pressure is applied if it persists or worsens, see a doctor. If you are diabetic, you have a higher risk of infection so see your doctor before a piercing. Non-Caucasians are susceptible to keloid scarring, an abnormal scarring that goes beyond the original site of the skin injury. If you have Asian, Hispanic, or African heritage, consider avoiding all types of body piercing and tattoos.

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.

Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. Up2 Salon* will make you beautiful! Tarntawan Place Hotel* is at the centre of the action. Eat at Dick’s Cafe*, Telephone Pub* is always busy and night owls party at DJ Station*. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly 56

Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-in-thailand.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner

OUT in Phuket P

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away and is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex. Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro has a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna* and Adonis Guesthouse. Apsara Residence delights and The Backstage* now has two venues; this one serves good Thai fast food and coffee and has a good cabaret show. Jochen’s Residence has beautiful budget friendly rooms and the Dolphin Hotel is a landmark.. The disco at Boat Bar* is a favourite with many visitors and locals alike.

Sundowners Bar & Guest House

We have a selection of cocktails, beer, wine and champagne Ground Floor: Bar, Terrace Bar, Pool Table, Complimentary Wi-Fi Second Floor: Air Con Sports Bar, covered Terrace Bar

Sundowners Lounge & Guest House

Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. The recently refurbished Club One Seven* guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Backstage* has retained their old location for private parties and karaoke nights, reservation only. minutes walk from Patong Beach. Stay at brand new and sparkling CC’s Hideaway, Phuket Gay Homestay with regualar pool parties and BB-Q’s close to Kata & Karon Beaches and Phuket Fantasea is a major attraction.
