Me, My Familiar
She rules! In one of her popular talk show concerts, “Opal”, Thai movie star and DJ, could not take it anymore. She had to defend her friend. “I hate discrimination,” she announced in front of the crowded hall. “I believe people are different and we should live together.” She and her gay friend had hopped on the BTS Skytrain one day. He was a good-looking guy with a high profile from a well-to-do family and was sitting next to a big, fat man “whose shin reveals layers of fat,” she described. (no offense to overweight people). “That fat man looked at my friend and said: Stay away from me, faggot! We were shocked to hear that. I was speechless.” She said if she could turn back time to that incident, she would have said: “Look, fatty, if you happened to be born in the gay world, you would be such a sad, sad guy.” She got a big applause from around the hall. Yes, Opal is one of the queens Thai gays 8
adore. She is edgy, quippy, over the top, and super-funny – all qualifications to be our to-die-for fag hag. But, to many people’s big surprise, she is still seeing “Dr. Oak”, a cute skin doctor and a celebrity star. Not only that they are much different: Opal is dark-skinned and looks rather like a stereotypical maid from poor upcountry, rather than a star; whereas Dr. Oak looks like a prince in a fairly tale, but also rumor has it that Oak is a closeted case. To many of her gay fans’ super-size surprise. How didn’t Opal know? Well, many fag hags marry gay guys and become just “good friends” later in their lives. For me, as she pointed out, “People are different, we could live together.” Right, she has her standpoint. They have been together over a year and I hope she will marry him soon. That couple on TV. Finally, Thailand got a gay couple as hosts on mainstream TV. But hold on, they are not doing a gay

TV show. They are part of a news program in a morning session on Channel 5 (a military-owned TV station), light news stories retold in a conversational style. In Thai, this genre is dubbed: Lao Khao. “Book and Peh” are not open about their sexualities, but they do not hide them from friends. Book, (the one in brown) recently finished his transformation from a skinny boy to get hunky. I watched one episode of him in a tight T-shirt and could not take my eyes off his muscles! In later episodes, he did not dress like that. Not sure if the military banned it? But now he usually appears in fashionable suits. With Peh, younger one, on the right, this TV show has become one of my favorite news programs. They should do another program together. Want a suggestion? A wrestling show.

Phuket Pride be there! Phuket Loves You club have launched Phuket Pride week 2013 and are proud to announce planned events. The theme for this year’s Pride week is ‘Same same NOT different’. “Men are different from women and children are different from adults. But we are all human beings and all deserve to have the same rights and be respected in the same way. Therefore, we are ‘Same same NOT different’,” say PLU, adding. “Homophobia is rooted in the belief that Gay (LGBT) people are “different”, “alien” or “perverse”. This fear of being “different” and being seen as an outcast by society adds to the paranoia and even suicide of especially young people in accepting their sexuality and coming out to society.” Make sure you get to Phuket’s golden week and plan with our guide to what’s on: Sunday 21st PRE-PRIDE POOL PARTY at CC’s Hideaway 4pm to 10pm Monday 22nd GAY DAY CRUISE TO RAYA ISLAND. Inner Rainbows Burst OUT! By Jeza Belle
“Approval neither required or desired.” With these five words, Noxeema Jackson from the 1995 film, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, sends out a clarion call to queens around the world. From Southeast Asia to the streets of New York, Ladyboys everywhere have been gaining a noted place in society ever since. When we step out onto the town each night, our looks and styles may be as numerous as the stars in the sky. Yet, whether we are feminine and poised or edgy and androgynous, one thing is for sure: while we sparkle and shine everyone stops and takes notice. However, when dawn breaks, our brighter selves fade into the sun, slumbering in safety until another moon rises. This leaves one to wonder; for all of our visibility, are we truly accepted or merely tolerated for a passing moment of time? It is said that beauty fades. This is true, but generally at the hands of another. Let’s examine the case of one of our sisters, Cinderella. Every culture has a version of this poo-ying’s story. For 14
years ‘Cind’ has been a dull doll. She sits around in rags and cleans up after her wicked step-sisters who taunt her at every turn. Till one day, Cind meets a glittering fairy god-mother. In the twinkle of a nose, she goes from ripped jeans to Thakoon, Jimmy Choo’s and a Nikki Minaj pink weave. Suddenly she’s the belle of the ball and has princes at her feet. As all good things must come to an end, so the clock strikes twelve and our queen, spilling chardonnay on her frock, rushes out of the palace, leaving behind a broken heel and trail of lipstick. Our tales ring true. Private divas lay dormant for fear of what we may suffer at the hands of our own evil step-sisters. We have all been the victim of their bullying at some point. The ridicule we endure may come in different languages, but the message is the same: you are not like us, not normal, a freak. No longer able to suppress our inner rainbow, we eventually however burst open releasing our true glamorous selves.
Enter Jeza-rella (*wink, wink*) stage-left. One day Jeza is attacked by a group of athletes at the religious college she attends. Among other things that are said to her, she is told that she is going to burn in hell for being a faggot. While having always fantasized about a group of muscle bound jocks, this doesn’t quite live up to her expectations. However broken, like most of us, Jeza-rella is resilient. Flipping through the channels of her television one day, she comes across fairy drag-mothers RuPaul and Lady Bunny, who inspire her to sprout six feet of flaming red hair and nom yaa as big as Thailand. After a few tipping tucks from her girls down the street, she realizes that whether on a stage or the local corner, people are drawn to her warmth and glow if only for a minute. I am sure the reader can relate. At this point, we are no longer on the outside looking in. We are at the party! Yet, when the music ends and the lights come on, shadows no longer conceal the truth. To our rags, we return to hide out another day until we can once again embrace a hazy vision of acceptance clouded by false eyelashes. Thus, the moral of Cinder/Jeza-rella’s story is this: as long as we know our place we are invited to the dance. However, lest we forget, we are not yet one of them, we are simply the hired act.
15
It is estimated that as many as 500 million people on the planet are Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual or Transgender. In Thailand alone the number is approximately 5 million. Yet, despite our numbers LGBT members are often some of the most abused people on earth. In 2011 there was a reported 10% increase in the number of crimes against LGBT members in the United States alone, with many more crimes going unreported out of fear. In Brazil, studies indicate that a homosexual is killed every 36 hours. In 2007, a GLSEN report indicated that 86% of gay youth were bullied at school. Furthermore, a wave of gay teen suicide has been sweeping the world. How can all of this be a happening at a time of increasing global attention? Now ladies, before we allow our eyeliner to run muddy trails of tears down our rubyrouged cheeks, let us lift our heads and take in our progress. Since 2001 it has become legal for the same sex to marry in eleven countries and within certain additional jurisdictions. Rights and respect have expanded on each of the continents
16
to include increased protection, the ability to live more openly, and even in some cases the right to have children. Whether these births are natural or silicone, there is one of us born every time Lady Gaga takes a hit on her pipe. Even as each of the heroes we admire step down from the stage into eternity like Sahara Davenport, Divine and Cher (oh wait, that kathoey has 1,000 lives), another girl is trying to fill her size twelve’s. A quick scan of Facebook alone reveals countless thousands of ladyboys, transsexuals, drag kings and queens living in our midst. If there indeed is safety in numbers, we are turning the tide by our stunning figures alone. Nonetheless, it is not how many we are that will continue to move us towards increased acceptance. It is our relentless strength of spirit. Everyone goes through difficulties, but after you have done it in a push-up bra with your junk strapped down between your legs, you come out on the other side a little stronger. No matter what others may see through the jewelry and wigs, it’s what we’ve got on the inside that will let us prevail in spite of all of the odds. Therefore, in the end, Noxeema, who gave us our earlier anthem, says it best while talking to her girlfriend Vida. “What the hell! I’m not gonna worry about if people accept me or not. I’m gonna make Hollywood wherever I am at.” Ms. Jackson reminds all of us Cinder/Jeza/Ladyboy-rellas that ultimately it’s up to us to first accept ourselves. Beyond that, the party is wherever we make it.

Noteworthy Note!
Jetsada Taesombat won the OUT iT 2013 Activist of The Year (Editor’s Choice) Award in January. This month she talks to James Barnes about her life and work with the Thai Transgender Alliance.
to be unlike the other boys and called me, ‘Kathoey’. I had friends at school who were the same as me and we were harassed by the boys- they always made jokes about us.”
Khun Jetsada likes to be called Note and has a packed life, working for the TGA, public speaking or taking to the streets to demonstrate for the cause she so passionately believes in. This attractive and vivacious 29 year old is quietly spoken and unassuming but she is always ready to fight for the rights of Transgendered Thais and south-east Asians.
Life was not easy at home either, “My family realized I was TG when I was very young. At first, they could not take it. They took me to see a psychiatrist in Korat but he did not understand me. The first question he asked me was if I wanted to be a showgirl at Tiffany in Pattaya! At that time, I did not know what Tiffany was and I did not want to be a showgirl- I just wanted my family to accept me. Finally, my family and doctor told me that I needed treatment. They wanted me to be a man because my parents had only one boy. I could not deny them but I felt so uncomfortable. However, later
She was born in Nakhorn Ratchasima and cannot remember when she first realized she was TG: “When I was a child, I did not feel weird or different from others but a lot of people around me judged me 18
on my parents accepted me because I had proved myself in university and got a job. Also, most of my friends were transgender, we did not have a problem with each other but male friends were always kidding us.” Note graduated from Prince of Songkla University in Social Development and is now studying for a Master’s degree at Mahidol University in human rights and social development. She is comfortable being an out TG now: I don’t see any problem with being TG in the University. Many TG’s are recognized and successful while they’re in the University and after with their jobs. We like to stand out in the class, not letting anyone put us down because of our sexuality, that’s why we like to study very hard and be recognized in the class.”
So how did she get involved with rights issues? “It began when I studied in university. I did many human rights, womens, and religious reports and then I chose to work with the LGBT movement in Thailand. In my internship period, I was forced to dress like a man so I decided to join with Rainbow Sky Association because they were open minded and this lead me work with LGBT. Finally, I became a founder and coordinator of Transgender Alliance.” “Currently I’m a coordinator at Thai Transgender Alliance (ThaiTGA) as well as a programme assistant for the Southeast Asian Consortium on Gender, Sexuality and Health Consortium and committee of Foundation for SOGI rights and justice. The TGA is a network of people 19
who were born and identified as male due to their sexual organ, but perceived themselves as other gender, as well as persons, groups and organizations working for human rights and sexual health of transgendered in Thailand. The goals of the TGA are to support transgendered people in Thailand; to gather all transgender-related information and to produce knowledge packages for transgenders in Thailand; to strengthen capacity and skills of the members of the groups and organizations working with transgenders; to raise awareness and understanding concerning the identities and rights of transgender and also establish coordination and constructive engagements of civil societies in order to improve Thai society.” “At first, I worked with our network groups. Our teams came from different backgrounds and my colleagues are skillful, good consultants, and such as The 20
Center for healing policy study, Sister Pattaya, Teeranat Foundation and SOGI, rights and justice,” says Note, who sees a brighter future: “TGA ia a public space for scholars and communities to join and share ideals and experiences and will be a best practice model for TG rights.” Note was typically modest about winning OUT iT’s Award for activist of the year, saying, “I feel surprised, excited and happy with this award. I think it has to be shared with our networks and friends who work for Gender Justice.” Her message to OUT iT readers is clear: “I hope that this publicity will help to open minds to the humanity of TG’s and let people know that if they need support, they can contact us and know that they will be welcome. No matter what sexual identity you have and how you define yourself, you are our friend!” For more information, please contact www. thaitga.com and www.facebook.com/ thaitga

The Wonders of South America by Pied Piper
Not many have the luxury of combining a wealth of global leisure trips with business travel, and in that sense I know I have been extremely lucky. Occasionally, though, there are times when I really want to experience part of the world that is not on my usual itineraries. So it was in 2010, when I realised a long-held dream to spend a month visiting several countries in South America. 26
My goal was to include four of the world’s great sights: the stunning Iguaçu Falls, named in 2011 as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature; the pristine wilderness of the Torres del Paine National Park in the very south of Chile; the Perito Moreno glacier across the border in Argentina, one of the very few that is actually advancing; and the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu high up in the Peruvian Andes. Spanning the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, the Iguaçu Falls are best seen from the Brazilian side in the early morning – marvellous panoramic views with the sun behind you. Your first sight is of a huge series of doubledecker waterfalls stretching more than 2 kilometers away to your left. When Eleanor Roosevelt visited, she looked in awe and exclaimed, “Poor Niagara!”
Iguaçu has the second largest annual water flow of any falls in the world after Victoria Falls, but most agree Iguaçu is more spectacular. A pathway with several vantage points for photos takes you along to the point where the Falls turn back on themselves in a hook shape named the Devil’s Throat. For intrepid travellers, there are small boat trips and even a walkway to take you impossibly close to the Falls. In late-morning, cross the border again and view them more leisurely from the Argentinian side. Here there are more walkways, this time right along the top of the Falls that make them seem – and sound – impossibly dramatic. My trip then took me to Santiago before flying down to Patagonia. For the 3½ hour flight to Punta Arenas at the very south of the continent, I had a 27
window seat on the left of the aircraft. Thankfully, it was a sunny morning, and there unfolding below me were the Andes mountains and the wonder that is the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. After Alaska, this is the largest extra-polar ice field on the planet. Extraordinary! From Punta Arenas, I was whisked by minibus for the five-hour drive to the Torres del Paine (Blue Towers) National Park. How does one describe the superb beauty of the wilderness in this part of Chilean Patagonia! What made it so special was waking up every morning to a view of wondrously-shaped granite peaks (about 2,800 meters high), breathing in amazingly pure air and exploring the countryside on guided treks, all far from other human habitation. Ending this part of the trip with a real gaucho lunch was the icing on the cake. The Perito Moreno glacier may only be some 50 miles or so from the National Park, but it requires a border crossing and a long six-hour roundabout trip to 28
reach the nearest town in Argentina, El Calafate. The glacier itself is monstrously, awesomely large. If you imagined that glaciers are smooth white rivers of ice, think again. As they make their slow descent, the centuries-old ice cracks, creating a Hobbit-like mountain range. The weight of the ice grinds the rock below into a brown powder called moraine which finds its way to the top. So it’s all rather like a slushy wintry road, except – and here is the wonder – underneath it glows the most magnificent shade of deep crystal blue. I then flew back up most of the continent to Lima, the capital of Peru This is the essential starting point for the short flight high into the mountains to Cusco. In the early 16th century, Cusco was the centre of the Spanish occupation of Peru and where Francisco Pizzaro with his force of less than 200 men effectively wiped out the entire Inca Empire. Cusco is 3,300 meters above sea level and you feel it as soon as you
step off the plane. To help avoid altitude sickness, time for acclimatization is essential. Guidebooks advise spending the first four hours just lying on your bed and reading. Bored with my book and remembering that the city’s flag is a rainbow one, I got on to gayromeo and discovered there were 110 members in Cusco, several online. Acclimatisation meant that evening was out for me. But I still had two more! Three trains run between Cusco and Machu Picchu, one by the Orient Express company – and as expensive! Yes, I splurged, and loved it! The 70mile journey lasts almost four hours and slowly takes you through twists and turns at the foot of seemingly impossibly high gorges. On arrival at Aguas Caliente, you board Mercedes buses, mercifully fitted with well-maintained brakes, for an horrific zigzag ride taking you 700 meters higher via a steep dirt-track mountain road. After the final turn, there in front of you is the extraordinary ruin that is Machu Picchu.
One thing photographs and postcards fail to convey adequately is how horribly steep those mountains are. The main part of Machu Picchu is fairly level, but on one side there is a nearsheer drop down to the valley. At one point on our tour, the guide led us down some steps with no handrail. I was terrified, but an elderly couple skipped down them seemingly without a care! As you walk through these ruins, it is impossible not to feel the history of this rocky citadel whose origins and purpose remain a mystery and which the Inca’s conquerors never discovered. I used mileage tickets to get from Bangkok to Buenos Aires via London. A shorter routing is to go via Sydney and on to Santiago by Qantas or LAN Chile. Flights within South America are expensive, but much cheaper if you purchase them outside the country as part of your international ticket. So plan your itinerary and lock in your flights well in advance. 29
The Glorious 1960s part 1
By Jai Pee
Dusty Springfield
Musicologist Jai Pee continues his story of the evolution of pop music and culture focusing this edition on the years between 1960 and 1967, but having by necessity, to leave out many names and chart hits. Following the tragic deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper in a plane crash in Iowa in 1959, the rock’n’roll scene across the western world began to consolidate and produce star after star and group after group. These years were full of magic, awe and wonder – and at the time, people did not really recognize just what was happening – the world of music and associated cultures was moving so fast. Johnny Ray, a crooner and rock singer, who had a number of arrests for soliciting men in public places, made a major contribution to the music scene, but in the sixties his career was overshadowed by illness. However, his music was to be revived some years later when he enjoyed some30
thing of a come-back. And these were the years of slowly changing attitudes towards gay people when USA state after state began to change the laws relating to homosexuality and sodomy. In the UK, homosexuality from the age of 21 was legalized in 1967 – the year the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, himself a closet gay, died from an overdose of drugs. Fashions too were moving with the times – the mini-skirt was followed by hot pants; jeans became universally worn and a huge fashion industry grew and prospered; hairstyles for men grew longer; creams, gel and hairsprays abounded. Teddy boys with long jackets and drainpipe trousers and thick crepe shoes began to disappear. As one of the great icons of the sixties wrote: “The Times They are a’Changin’” (Bob Dylan of course). But on a lighter note, Lonnie Donegan and his skiffle group were still wondering if their chewing gum lost its flavour on the bedpost overnight!
The Beatles
Young people began to protest – first over the escalating Vietnam War, the Cuban missile crisis, then much later over the Russian presence in a changing Czechoslovakia – and the folk/protest singer phenomenon exploded with names such as Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Donovan and many more. And a number of protest songs made it into the popular charts – Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction” and Hedgehoppers Anonymous (a group of former British RAF pilots) with “Good News Week” being good examples. The world of music was to be dominated for many years from Liverpool in the UK. From this unlikely but staunch British city came so many groups and individuals it would be impossible to name them all. The most famous was of course the Beatles who formed themselves into a group in 1960 with Brian Epstein managing them from 1962 onwards; they shot to fame both sides of the Atlantic. Epstein also managed Cilla Black, Gerry
and the Pacemakers (“You’ll Never Walk Alone”) and Billy J. Kramer (“Trains and Boats and Planes”) – all from Liverpool; but there were other names from the north-west of the UK as well – the Merseybeats (“Wishin’ and Hopin’”) the Searchers (“Needles and Pins”), the Fourmost (“Baby I Need Your Lovin’“), the Mojos (“Everything’s Alright”), Billy Fury (“Colette”) and the Swinging Blue Jeans (“Hippy Hippy Shake”) to name but a few. Groups abounded and became exceptionally popular, riding high on the successes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones (formed in 1962 and celebrating their 50th anniversary last year – names such as The Beach Boys, The Marvelettes, The Drifters The Shirelles, The Kinks, The Animals, The Dave Clark Five, The Yardbirds, The Monkees, and the Tremeloes (to name just a few!) entered the Hall of Fame and each had a wonderful string of successes, major and minor. 31
Jim Morrison
Phil Spector entered the scene with a new ‘echo chamber’ sound that resulted in great hits for groups like the Crystals and the Righteous Brothers. Other great stars emerged – Dusty Springfield who ‘outed’ herself some years later, Tom Jones, Stevie Wonder, Roy Orbisojn, Del Shannon and Gene Pitney stand out immediately. Many of the songs were, however, more in the way of one-off hits as far as the charts were concerned for artists such as Little Eva (“The Loco-Motion”), Johnny Tillotson (“Poetry in Motion”), Chubby Checker with his ‘twist’ hits and Mary Wells with “My Guy’. The list could go on for ever! By 1964, Billboard’s Top 100 listed no less than 12 Beatles numbers. In the UK, pirate radio stations started broadcasting from outside the 3 mile territorial limits, much to the annoyance 32
of the BBC – forced eventually to counter this with their own pop channel, Radio 1. Top of the Pops, Thursday night’s regular pop show attracted millions of viewers each week. Countless other pop shows followed suit. The Ed Sullivan Show in the USA often hosted some of the biggest names from both sides of the Atlantic. It was a time of great happiness and joy. And the times went on a changin’!! By 1966, bigger louder rock bands were emerging – The Doors, Pink Floyd, and The Who for example; jazz-type songs began to infiltrate, such as Van Morrison’s “Brown-Eyed Girl” and then came flower power – Scott McKenzie inviting us all to San Francisco with flowers in our hair – and so began a new era; to be continued next month.

Ban Den Friends Noom (Part 1) By Kenneth Dobson
carefully planned and infrequent. A trip of a mere five kilometres to the market was undertaken only when necessary. Ban Den had its own market, open from before dawn until after breakfast. Other than that there were a couple of small stores selling liquids, powders, brushes and a few tools, shirts and necessities.
Noom was queer. He cannot remember a time he did not know he was unlike other boys. It had all come on him so slowly and naturally that he had suffered far less than other katoeys who were stunned and shattered by reality at a later age. Noom had no role models, he had to find his own way, and that was an advantage most of the time. Ban Den was a village. It was remote and any excursion to Chiang Mai was 34
Money was always in short supply in Noom’s family. His father had one rai of rice land. It was, of necessity, enough to feed the family. Most other things were raised, foraged or found. The family’s main possession was a docile water buffalo, which had produced several calves over the years. Chickens roamed around until needed. Eggs were undependable. Cash for soap and fish sauce was carefully hoarded. Things were handmade whenever possible. Clothing was worn literally to shreds. Noom was blissfully oblivious to the extent of their poverty because all around shared it. The best season was after the rains began, when the mushrooms appeared. To get ready for them, men set fire to the forest floors. The April burning sent
clouds of smoke into the sky where it accumulated as a lid over the bowl-like valleys. The forest creatures had to run ahead of the lines of fire and men with muzzle-load rifles hunted the larger animals, wild pigs being the grand prize. After the rains began, mushrooms sprouted and glistened white against the soot on the blackened forest floors. Other forest bounty included ant eggs, tarantulas, wild honey, pods and flowers, certain phases of termites and fat snakes. Vines and bushes had parts that could make a soup to go with rice. The trip to and from the hills could sometimes turn up bamboo shoots, an edible fruit, or a luckless lizard. Of course, the waterways were probably the main source of protein for the village. Long as the list of possibilities was, most days there was only rice and thin sour soup. None of Noom’s siblings went beyond the fourth grade. That’s as much education as was provided by the village school on the top of the hill. By the age of ten Noom and the other village kids had joined the work force. The line between boys’ work and girls’ work was indistinct. They all tended animals, learned to cook, patched their clothes, washed their underwear when they took baths and learned handicrafts. At all these things, Noom excelled, as he never had up the hill. What he had learned there he continued to use and develop through necessity. He never read for enjoyment. He rarely wrote except to fill out a form. Ability with arithmetic was even slower to come. Despite their roles, children were on loose reins. There was plenty of time to charge screaming through the village,
imagining a peril or pursuit. They were reasonably free to investigate emerging wonders of nature or to invent adventures. By the time they sprouted body hair they were shifted out of childhood. It is commonly said that talk of sex is taboo in Asian and Thai society. That is untrue. Sex talk is common in peer groups. That, in fact, is how most information (and misinformation) gets around; the rest is through experimentation. “Come on,” Tan called to the boys. “Where are you going?” Noom called back. “We’re going to the hut,” Tan told him. The hut was their private place. It was a leaf lean-to in a gorge in the forest above the village, big enough for three or four boys to sit down, but not much room to move around. Fahk and Tan had brought gourds of water which they shared as they pulled off their shirts. Before long Tan said, “I want to show you something.” Noom thought he sounded nervous or excited. The older boy often sounded funny those days. What had made Tan nervous was soon obvious when he pulled down his shorts. In villages like Ban Den, children often ran around naked but older children didn’t do that. There came an age when kids began to feel self-conscious. After that, modesty was the rule. Tan threw back his chest so his stomach stuck out a little and he waited for the boys to notice. Fahk was the first to see what Tan was showing off. Just above his 35
penis were some dark hairs, more like fuzz except a few of them were a little longer. Then Tan lifted his arm to show that the same wonder was sprouting in his armpit. Of course, this show couldn’t be complete without the rest of them stripping bare to be examined for the tell-tale darkening that marks the beginning of the end of being a boy. Tan, so far, was in the lead. Fahk might possibly be getting near. Noom was happy to be smooth and hairless. He hoped to stay this way, but knew he wouldn’t. “Do girls do this?” Fahk asked. Tan had two older sisters, so he was knowledgeable. “They get hair down there and under their arms, too. But when they get our age they also have monthly bleeding.” Yo was bothered by that idea, since he didn’t know how to relate it to anything normal and not dangerous. Tan saved him the trouble of trying to express his concern by going on, “My sister has to wear a pad a couple of days a month down there,” he pointed between his legs, “to catch the blood. She says it’s when this month’s egg comes out.” Noom and Yo both pictured a bird’s egg. Again Tan was helpful. “It is a tiny egg not big enough to see.” Then he said something that was astonishing to the younger boys. “But if a man makes the egg grow, it stays inside the woman and becomes a baby.” It took considerable effort for the boys to believe this or 36
to make sense out of it. Tan was proud of his information, derived incrementally from his sisters and their talkative friends. “The egg grows into a baby and after 9 months it is born.” That part wasn’t news to these village boys living around animals and in families where pregnancy and childbirth were not secrets. Still, Noom wondered aloud, “How does a man make the egg grow?” Tan wasn’t as cogent about this, “I think the man waters the egg with his juice,” he said. This explanation wasn’t clear enough. They pressed him to tell more. “Uh, see? The man has these,” Tan flipped his testicles in their wrinkled sack with his finger. “They make juice, and then the man puts his banana into the woman and the juice comes out and waters the egg. If it begins to grow it stays inside the mother and becomes a baby. If it isn’t watered the egg comes out with some blood at the end of the month.” “He pees into the woman?” Yo cried. “No! Pee is different. The juice that causes an egg to grow comes from our balls!” The boys were impressed with the new thought of this power they had. By now the sun had begun to make the hut too hot for comfort. Time to go back down. Next month: Noom (Part 2) You can download the complete and unabridged novel at www.out-in-thailand.com/shop

Hit & Miss
Paul Abbott is a BAFTA award-winning English TV screenwriter who has become one of the most critically and commercially successful television writers working in the UK today, working on popular series, including Coronation Street, Cracker and Shameless, the latter of which he created. His latest is Hit & Miss (Knowledge Series True Visions ch.63) In the first episode we see ‘hitman’ Mia, played by Golden Globe winner Chloe Sevigny, coldly despatch her target in a car park before reapplying her lipstick in the rear view mirror. Then she reads a letter with the news that a former girlfriend has died and charged her with the care of four children, including a son Mia did not know she had fathered. Confused? When Mia disrobes, we see a (prosthetic) penis that reveals that she is telly’s first transgendered contract killer. Paul Abbot says that the show is the combination of two projects; one about a transgendered mother and the other about a hitman. This would explain why Hit & Miss feels like an unsuccessful attempt to graft ‘The Crying Game’ onto
‘Party of Five’. The trite family scenes are hackneyed and the violence is slickly sterile. This was Rupert Murdoch’s first foray into original drama production for his UK Sky TV channel and there is no sign that a second series will be made. Former indie model, Sevigny looks good in whatever she wears and her northern Irish accent is passable but you have seen all the plots of this show in ancient westerns and the TG twist is just special effects. We are sick and tired of Thai TV depicting TG’s as figures to mock or hysterical psychotics so why should we take to this piece of obvious British subversion? It’s 2013 already! About time we showed TG’s as sympathetic characters. 37

FRANCIS COPPOLA and THE OUTSIDERS By Brian Baxter
To describe Francis Coppola simply as a film director would be akin to classifying Everest as just another mountain. A five time Oscar winner among a host of other awards he is best known for The Godfather movies, Apocalypse Now and entertainments such as Peggy Sue Got Married and John Grisham’s The Rainmaker and the masterly The Conversation, which he considers his best (and favourite) work. He has directed well over 30 movies, written many more and produced 70 plus films for other great directors. This month he turns 74 and celebrates 50 years of marriage to Eleanor – an artist and documentary film maker. Looking back over this astonishing career what strikes one most is the variety of his work and the loyalty he has shown to his collaborators .Beyond this 38
he has an eye for spotting talent that began with great actors such as Robert de Niro and Al Pacino and continues to this day – his latest star being the ultra -cute Aldren Erhrenreich who has the ring of the young Leonardo di Caprio about him. Aldren stars in Coppola’s two latest movies, Tetro and Twixt. The most fascinating example of his casting genius was for two movies made back to back – the autumn hued The Outsiders and its alter ego Rumblefish shot within weeks of each other in 1983 with much the same crew and many of the same young actors. Both come from works by S.E. Hinton and the idea came from high school fans of her work. The leads in The Outsiders are a group of handsome actors and future stars rounded up to play the two warring
factions - the Socs (posh) and the greasers (tough). The best role is Ponyboy. C. Thomas Howell plays him and gets to dye his hair bright blond as a disguise, when hiding out with pretty pal Ralph Macchio - pre Karate Kid. The hunky Matt Dillon has the other plum role but also featured are Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevese, Leif Garrett and Tom Cruise. Remember this is 30 years ago. In the second of these Jekyll and Hyde duo Dillon plays the young brother to Mickey Rourke before whatever happened to him, happened. Plus Vincent Spano (ditto) and Nicolas Cage (ditto). As said the first film is ravishingly shot with the accent on gold, while the other is in black and white except for some fighting fish which are in colour. The extravagance of the few seconds of colour was typical of the director who
filmed Michael Jackson’s Captain Eo at a cost of a million dollars a minute back 1986. He also self-financed the enchanting musical One from the Heart to the tune of 25 million dollars and was bankrupted as a result. Happily his fortunes changed and he is now vastly wealthy and the owner of fine vineyards in Napa Valley, resorts in Belize and Guatamala and finances his own films once again. Possibly getting an 80 million dollar payout from Warner Bros. helped! Coppola remains a Hollywood legend for The Godfather trilogy above all. But for those who missed them plenty of his other films are essential viewing. The Outsiders is magical and awash with sentiment. It’s a fantasy of sorts and available on DVD in a longer version that the original release. Treat yourself. You know you deserve it. 39
ASK KA DARI
to do. I have not told anyone about this yet. I am afraid they will become circling vultures. I am well insured and not worried about the cost of my medical care. You seem to have it all figured out, Darika. I am not thinking clearly. I welcome our suggestions about how to handle the ultimate challenge. Gentle reader,
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com
Dear Darika, I retired two years ago at age 54. I had invested well, owned a successful business and decided that I wanted to enjoy life. I have a condo in Bangkok and a house in Hua Hin. I own a nice car, but someone else drives it for me. I know a lot of people but do not consider more than five or six to be good friends. No boyfriend. I have had a lot of fun, but really never “clicked with anyone especial. I swim, travel, enjoy nice restaurants and having time to myself. Very recently I was diagnosed with (it does not matter) and the doctors seen seem to agree that I might live a year, part of which will involve debilitation and pain. I have no family. Suddenly I feel very lonely and not quite sure what 40
Darika is very sad to hear of your predicament. I spent ten days in a hospital with pneumonia. About a week later I, while putting my appointments into my computer just before I was off to the airport, I noticed that the diagnosis on my paperwork was lung cancer and a brain tumor. During the five days I was away I asked myself a lot of questions. Should I die here or go home? In my case I wondered how to tell my mother, my boyfriend and my employees. When the day came for my follow up appointment it took me two hours to decide what to wear. It was all a stupid mistake, of course. No apology was forthcoming. Death visits all of us. You were successful in business because you knew how to plan. Once you catch your breath you need to make some plans about disposal of all of your assets. There is nothing wrong with leaving things to people who you consider friends. Give your car to your driver. If you do not know anyone deserving whose life would be changed in a wonderful way if they suddenly were given a condominium or house, give them to charity. Leave written instructions about how your remains should be disposed. Find an English speaking monk who is willing to give you emotional support. Unless you have strong religious convictions, you also have the power to
choose the time and manner of your own death and the extent to which you want to be treated, if you want to be treated at all. I watched my father take an entire year to die of cancer. That will never happen to me. I live on the 10th floor. Once you have plans in place invite everyone you know well to a big dinner party. After everyone is thoroughly relaxed, you can make an announcement about this turn of events and the decisions you have made. No vultures will circle. You will get the emotional and practical support you need. I know how to cook Italian for 50. Let me know if you need help. The last thing you need to do is make sure you are right with yourself. Make apologies and ask for forgiveness wherever necessary. Show appreciation to those who deserve it. Do things to make yourself happy, even if it’s just a foot massage.
Gentle Reader, We all have facets of our lives that we hide. The one you are talking about is pretty big. Using mascara and wearing lingerie would be a give-away, but there are actually heterosexual men who get off doing these things. Frequently coming home late without a plausible explanation, paying attention to guys’ asses in public, strange phone calls, depriving you of sex, or leaving trails to gay material on the home computer or gay porn under the bed are all signs. In your case, I would ask his mother if she has ever suspected anything. Mothers always know.
I hate to say goodbye, but we all have to sooner or later. So I will wish you luck and hope that you will be surrounded by love. See you on the other side, if there really is one. All the best, Darika Hi Darika, I am a married lady. My husband and I have been together for three years. No kids yet. He comes from a very conservative family and works for a family owned company. Over the last year, I begun to wonder if there is a side of him that he has not shown me yet. Nothing has happened to make me wonder except for my female intuition. But maybe you can tell me. How can you tell if your husband is gay?

OUT at the Doc’s Tips for a Better Sleep (Part 2) By Doc John
Insomnia feeds on the minor details of modern life, like the blue glow from a mobile phone, or digital clock on your bedside table. The short waves of blue light hinders sleep. Turn off TVs, computers, and other blue light sources before bed. Cover any blue displays you can’t shut off. When you glance at the clock in the wee hours of the night, your sleep will suffer. You worry about how few hours are left before you get up. Clock watchers should put their alarm in a drawer, under the bed, or turn it away from view. Mild low back pain may not wake you, but it can disrupt the deep, restful stages of sleep. A cushy solution is to place a pillow between the legs for better alignment of the hips and reduced stress on the low back. Sneezing, sniffling and itching will cause fragmented sleep. Over time the mattress will fill with mold, dust mite 42
droppings, and other allergy triggers. You can avoid them by sealing the mattress and pillow with air-tight plastic dust proof covers. Regular exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality, as long as you don’t work out too close to bedtime. A post-workout burst of energy can keep you awake, finish exercising three hours before bed. Treat yourself like a child: Nothing to drink within two hours of bedtime. It’ll help prevent those middle-of-the-night bathroom trips. If you need to go don’t turn on the bathroom light but keep a bathroom nightlight glowing. Although the tranquilizing effects of alcohol may make you sleepy at bedtime, beware alcohol causes more frequent awakenings at night and less restful sleep. A milk drink will send you off and keep you sleeping.
OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists. Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include The Prince’s Men’s Spa* is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar*. Up2 Salon* will make you beautiful! Tarntawan Place Hotel* is at the centre of the action. Eat at Dick’s Cafe*, Telephone Pub* is always busy and night owls party at DJ Station*. For a magnificent and sparkling cabaret show, watch out for The Playhouse. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys 44
nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! For all the venues, check out our maps and listings and www.out-inthailand.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner

OUT in Koh Samui
J
Jungle covered hills, secluded beaches - the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys. Recharge in spas; lounge around pool villas, beach walks, sip cocktails in a beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit. Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations but full of exotic surprises.
Gay day/nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end, opposite Nora Beach Resort is Emerald Green Mens Club* focused on high quality massage and body treatments, they are also the Gay & Lesbian Information Centre*. Opposite Akyra Resort is Tropical Fah Samui & Cafe/Bar* massage, drinks, snacks, event evenings. For ladyboy cabaret shows, check out Starz Cabaret* and Moulin Rouge. While Green Mango* Sound Bar and Sweet Soul mixed disco/bars are still popular with gays, ARK Bar on the beach - pool, food, DJ’s – is now a trendy haunt for gays in a young, international, mixed crowd. South Chaweng, opposite Trade Winds Resort is Mekkala Men Spa & The Site Bar rejuvenating massage and evening drinks. In Bo Phut is restful Tropical Garden Lounge 54
Resort* close to charming Fisherman’s Village with beach side restaurants and their Friday evening Walking Market. Saboey Resort and Villas is set in a relaxing, beautiful Bangrak beach side tropical garden. Towards Chaweng is Banyan House Coffee Garden & Restaurant. The Five Islands Restaurant* beach side at Ban Taling Ngam is also the starting point for Emerald Green on Blue @ Five Islands* gay only, all day excursion. For all venues see our maps and listings www.out-in-thailand.com also www.gaykohsamui.net & www.gaysamui.com *= Readers’ Choice Award Winner
