JOURNEY

OF

LOVE

Nick Langat’s first book, InNoSense- A journey of love, is a hefty volume of poems and pictures that record a ten year trip around the world and charts a love story that ends in death. However, it is a celebration of life and love, eternal. Nick spoke to James Barnes about the book and its heroes, Christian and Thaworn.

The epic trip the trio completed, took in 48 countries, from Argentina to Vietnam and the book records every stage of the journey with pictures and prose, all of which were produced by Nick. Souls are bared here but the artist is reticent about the trivial details of his life. “If I write about eternal love, I cannot talk about my age etc. How can you count age if you’re in an endless cycle of birth and death and birth? I’m always born anew now (here). I’m a traveller, enjoying most of my time in the City of Angels, connecting with them on a daily basis,” he says. 11

This enigmatic author talks of Christian and Thaworn in the present tense, despite their demise. “Christian and Thaworn are my friends, my brothers and my lovers. I lived, loved and travelled with them, shared the tenderness and the storms of love and life. Though they have left their bodies, they are still with me, in my thoughts and my heart, day and night. Everything about Christian and Thaworn is in the book, it’s difficult to add more. Christian and I had such a bright future, how could we have ever missed that future? Thaworn is still here with me eating som tam. Life is so beautifully sad, and love is all there is.”

“You could say I met both of them by chance but how could that be? There is no way that the meeting of someone that comes so close to your heart and soul could be an accident.” Fate dealt the cards when he met Christian in a Viennese bar in 1997 and Thaworn on the streets of Bangkok in 2001 and the three of them quickly embarked on their odyssey, which was far more than a simple sightseeing exercise. “To travel with the ones close to your heart is not just a voyage to discover foreign countries but even more, to discover the company that you’re travelling with,”

says Nick. “Simple travelling becomes a journey of love, where you explore the hearts and souls of your friends as much as the landscapes of the country you are visiting. His explanation of this reveals the artist’s eye: “You see faces in new lights when, for example the hour gets late in Iceland and the sun shine fades. At midday in Boracay, Philippines, the sun stands high up in the sky without any shadows and you see the face of your friend without a taint and it takes your breath away.”

“a shy secret which can only be discovered by the one who opens the book” 12

13

Like so many pioneers, the trip had a spiritual significance for Nick, who says, “Travel can also reverse the sight and can turn into something meditative. In moments of rest and reflection you open yourself to process unknown countries and experiences. The photos reflect and show all these facets of travelling with Christian and Thaworn. The openness and vulnerability, the tenderness and love and the discovery and awe of a breathtaking landscape or atmosphere of something unknown. The travels were journeys of love, discovering ourselves in different surroundings and shades.”

14

The book is a monument of the love Nick shared with Christian and Thaworn and it is dedicated to them and their memory. InNoSense enables the reader to be part of a journey that is love and life. And death. “Both of them fell ill shortly after one another, but not related to each other’s respective illness and not related to the travelling,” recalls Nick whose favourite poem in the book describes Thaworn’s death. It is touching, brave and beautiful. “It shows the tenderness of dying and the everlasting birth of love,” he explains.

The interview has not been easy for him: “For me doing interviews on poetry and photography is difficult. It’s like breaking apart what they are both like to behold: a shy secret which can only be discovered by the one who opens the book, a book of innocent love which just doesn’t make sense, because that’s what love is all about. It’s stupid, it’s funny and it’s real sad, and we have no choice than to create our own meaning of what’s left in the dark and what we carry to light.”

Unusually, InNoSense has six different covers, “I just couldn’t decide on only one!” jokes Nick. Find out more about the book and Nick and check out availability on www.moragodpublishing. com or order via moragodpublishing@ gmail.com and there will be a major exhibition of Nick’s “InNoSense” photos from August 16-27 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, 939 Rama 1 Road (opposite MBK).

Coming OUT The new generation of gays in Thailand and around the world have a new perspective, Mick Sandoval spoke to gay popster D Alexander to get the low down on the NEW GAY GENERATION

“…and thus began the beginning of the new race. A race within the race of humanity. A race which bares no prejudice, no judgment.” - Lady Gaga

Go ! Go ! Gaga

How gay times change. In the eighties and nineties, a combative gay youth chanted “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it”. Then came the young millennium gays who worked to alter their queerness, usually by morphing into muscle jocks, sporting cargo shorts and tight fitting Abercrombie & Fitch tanks. 16

Today’s gay youth have a new take on what it means to be gay. They’re not picketing for gay rights. Nor are they manscaping their chest hair. The gay youth of today are following the creed of their leaders – Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and the cast of Glee – who call for selflove and proclaim “We R Who We R” because we were born this way, baby. They’re embracing their inner sissy while simultaneously refusing to be defined by their gayness. Pop star D Alexander proudly counts himself among the new gays. He explains what being young and gay means today. 17

Are you defined by your gayness? To say that one’s sexual preference is who they are would be silly. We have so much more to offer. Yes, we should celebrate ourselves and be prideful of our sexuality, but letting it define us is a mistake.

What encouraged you to come out as an artist? In this industry, it’s hard to tell your team of producers that you want to write about being fierce and beautiful. The first few demos I wrote were about chicks and being fly. It came to a point where I couldn’t handle being suppressed any longer. I had to unleash the vibrant side of my personality and write music I felt connected to. 18

What defines you? Pop music is my ultimate definition. My life goal is to make people feel and hear the raw emotion in each song I write.

musical art. A true artist will suck their fans into their world and never let them go until they have consumed their deepest, most darkest thoughts.

When you sing about being beautiful, what are you referring to? Being beautiful is about embracing the most amazing, deepest and sickest parts of yourself. It’s a statement that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is beauty in the madness.

Does the gay community support its gay artists? The problem I think most gay artists have is that they allow their gayness to consume their craft. Instead of writing culturally groundbreaking music, they worry about their six packs and dancing around in their tighty whities. There has to be more to the artistry.

Do you feel a gay artist has a responsibility to be out? Absolutely, especially now that teen bullying and suicide is so prevalent. The community needs role models to empower youth and let them know its okay to accept themselves. My biggest responsibility as an artist is not the music but being an example of artistic truth. Are there disadvantages to being out today? I don’t think so. The music industry has changed so much over the years. Being honest with your crazy is what sells. Sell your honesty, sell your truth. Nobody wants a picture perfect cover boy they can’t relate to. What has paved the way to this new enlightenment? Lady Gaga has encouraged the world to shoot out with prideful colours. She is the perfect example of what an artist should be: a poster girl for self acceptance and

Who are some of the gay artists that inspire you? Melissa Ethridge and Elton John for their bravery in coming out at a time when being gay wasn’t as accepted. They paved the way for many artists to talk about taboo subjects. Without them, there would be no Gaga. Is there anything about yourself that you feel is off limits in your music? When it comes to my music, nothing is off limits. If I write about sex, I bare it all. What should older gay generations know about the youth of today? Past generations had to deal with a hell of a lot more prejudice, and for that, we thank them. The young generation needs to continue the fight. We need to make it so the next generation has an even better canvas to express their cultural freedom. Visit http://www.facebook.com/dalexandermusic. D Alexander Photos courtesy Dale Stine

OUT in Thailand Profile:

Rob Vermeer;

the man with the pearl earring

Rob Vermeer was born in The Hague, Holland, 52 years ago. Now he lives a dream life in Phuket and is at the helm of the increasingly popular The Backstage Purple Meeting Point in Patong. Rob spoke to James Barnes about how he came to the paradise island of The Andaman and a Technicolor life that saw him move from sport to politics. 20

21

He is a man whose plans are dreams that are destined to turn into reality. Rob is tall and has typical Dutch good looks. His manner is easy. His smile fading only when he lights a cigarette. He sports a pearl earring- an homage to his Dutch Master namesake. There is no proof that the great painter was a relation but Rob clearly paints with deftness on the canvass of his own life, which is full of colour and depth. “I was a rower but during the selection for the Montreal Olympics, an injury forced me to withdraw from the team. I also had to give up hockey and tennis. My wrist was fucked but my jaw was not!” Rob used that healthy jaw to be active in politics on all levels and get elected as the youngest ever councillor in the country at the time. The 2d & 3d time (then as sitting deputy mayor) he ran as an openly gay candidate because only in between those first two elections did he discovered he was gay! This dedicated pragmatist says: “I prefer honesty and integrity to power and I was not prepared to squander it.” He was active in the young liberals’ movement; he advised 22

his close friend and ‘student’ as they say here in Thailand, the current Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte and says, “Politics was and still is fun!” “Politics is addictive,” he confides, “because it provides the opportunity to be helpful to others.” In business, he was materialistic but, “I am very old fashioned, a kind of 19th century liberal who believes in noblesse oblige. I was not just an example of what to do but my mistakes showed what not to do!” he adds modestly. “Being too honest can be a mistake but I would rather die than lie.” In 2006, he visited Thailand for the first time, to holiday in Phuket with a Malaysian friend. “It took me three days to find Paradise! The first place we dropped in to was Passport Bar and loved it.” After returning to The Netherlands, Rob’s mother died and two months later, he was back in Thailand. “I wanted to be alone,” he says, “I stayed at Club One Seven, which was great. It was very safe and they had good information about the gay scene.” It was on the first night of this trip that he met Kik who, later that

year came to Holland for the 1st time and where, in 2008, they got married. “My initial attraction to Thailand was their relaxed attitude to being gay but I don’t think like that now. There is a big difference between tolerance and acceptance,” he observes, shrewdly. Rob is keenly interested in gay rights in Thailand and says, “Minds have to be changed. It is ok to have sympathetic laws but those laws can always be changed back. Self acceptance and societal acceptance are the priority.”

proper way and to be old in Thailand, is not to be wallpaper- the respect shown by Thais keeps you healthier in mind and body.” Rob wants to establish a long-term stay guesthouse equipped for all ages where senior visitors can have a personal assistant who knows all their guests’ special requirements. “This is not sex tourism,” says Rob, “older guys like to have friends and continuity.” He is leaning forward now, his eyes sparkling with a glitter of excitement and sincerity. He is a man whose plans are dreams that are destined to turn into reality.

Rob opened The Backstage Purple Meeting Point in September 2010. “When I first got here, I had very good advice from friends in Bangkok. Start small, learn and expand your business as your experience grows. Learning on the job is fun!” He does not talk about problemshe does talk about challenges and is a man who sees the bigger picture and enjoys the challenge of making a viable business here. His plans for the future are based on the sum of his experience and philanthropy. He recognises the number of older visitors to Thailand and appreciates the cultural deference they enjoy. “Older people need to be taken care of in the 23

Customers flock to dynamic new bar

Happy Place Bar celebrates spectacular first year By a Concerned Writer (interview by Edward Hill)

PATTAYA - Happy Place Bar celebrated a spectacular first year anniversary on June 28th with a sensational One-Year Birthday Bash packing the gay go-go bar to a buzzing full house.

Its nightly 10:30 pm show is extraordinarily popular. Customers are advised to arrive early for a seat and there have been continual improvements to the show throughout the year.

Opened in June 2010, Happy Place has quickly become arguably the most dynamic and customer-driven go-go bar in the vicinity of Boyztown. Located in Soi 2, Pattayaland ] (See map at the back of this issue), it has built its reputation on listening to customers and rapidly introducing innovative new measures each month to appeal to local expats and visitors. 24

Happy Place started by creating a “hassle free” environment. Customers may volunteer to buy drinks for staff but staff may not badger you for drinks. Dozens more customer-pleasing measures introduced include competitively priced drinks, Boy Bingo Nights each month and a special “free off after midnight” (no fee with purchase of two drinks) promotion during the low season.

Part of offering customers a pleasing experience is working hard to keep staff and go-go boys upbeat and happy. This event was no different. Hard work produced a spectacular reward for the boys and a terrific night for customers.

The One-Year Birthday Bash went off in extravagant style with gourmet stuffed crab, rock lobster, shrimp, red snapper, BBQ chicken, roast pork, cottage pie and a generous buffet of Thai food, fruit and side dishes. The admission fee included two free drinks, champagne, food and an abundance of prizes to be won by both staff and customers. All boys won a cash prize of between 500 to 5,000 baht, a gold chain, TV or Playstation. Customers enjoyed an outstanding show and had a chance to win prizes including bottles of Johnny Walker Gold Label and other top-shelf spirits and restaurant gift certificates.

25

As expected, the event was packed to a full house with standing room only. “Our last party was such an over the top success. We had to turn away regular customers who always buy a good bottle of whiskey, sadly because we had no place for them to sit”, said a friend of M, the Co-owner. “This time, we decided to sell advanced tickets for our One-Year Birthday Bash.» The idea for Happy Place Bar came from its two owners, M and friend. M is a 27-year-old secondary school graduate from Bangkok. They met at Funny Boys Bar where he worked for two years. “I know what it’s like to be a working boy. The boys know that. I understand and care about them in a special way. They are my friends and we treat them that way. We pay them well and show them respect so they are loyal”, says M. 26

M’s friend is an energetic and innovative entrepreneur, originally from Denver, Colorado and New York. He previously owned a large New York gay bar, an adult products manufacturer distributing to over 250 stores and a gay magazine publication. His foray into Happy Place started after having been in Pattaya for ten years. “M and I were having dinner one night at New Orleans and the former owner of our bar came in and said she wanted to sell. It was a spur of the moment decision,” he said.. Decades of experience have gone into making Happy Place Bar a success with customers. While other bars suffer diminished returns in a tough economy, Happy Place has pushed through the gloom by combining an innovative offering with great customer service and attractive promotions for customers.

“We pay attention to every detail. We offer high-quality cold towels, not wet naps. We have top-shelf beverages, Johnny Walker Blue Label and Dom Perignon available. We also offer upper shelf spirits without going over the top at no extra cost, such as Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray Gin.” Happy Place has 25 to 30 boys dancing each night plus a staff of 15, including a general manager, two assistant managers and a DJ. All waiters are required to speak English. “We listen to what our customers have to say. A lot of bar owners fall into the trap of thinking they know everything. If you give great service customers will come back,” says M.

“The aim of the bar was also to teach the boys about responsibility and holding a good job, to accomplish something worthwhile. M designed the entire interior, layout, colours and materials. He picked out the tiles and hired the best sound and lighting company we could find,” says his friend. He recalls, “I told them to make it spectacular, as if it were their own bar.” The bar attracts a great crowd of people from all walks of life. It also has ten great restaurants contributing gift certificate prizes for customers including Bruno’s, Street Life, Up2You, Holland House, New Orleans and Ma Ha Raja. Happy Place Bar is located at Soi 2 Pattayaland within the vicinity of Boyztown and has a regular nightly show starting at 10:30 pm. 27

Struggle for the Truth

By Dr. Kenneth Dobson

No matter how dedicated we may be to the struggle for equal rights as LGBT people in the 21st century, that is not our basic battle. Our fight for rights in religion, society, the body politic, and in global culture cannot be fully achieved until the basic, intellectual, struggle has been won.

Our real fight is against the binary concept, the false and indefensible, but divisive and destructive idea that sexuality is divided into male and female. The good news is that the binary concept is false and as long as science has a prevailing role in the management of knowledge, false concepts will fail and fade. The struggle we LGBT activists have been waging for the right to survive and the chance to thrive will become moot and we, too, will have those rights and chances. 28

Put simply, perhaps simplistically, nature does not verify the late-coming notion that the realm of sentient beings is divided into males and females, and that all individuals are one sex or the other, even when it comes to reproductive sexuality. Anthropologists, zoologists and scientists in most fields of applied human science recognize that in nature there are no clear and fixed lines between sexual identities and sexual roles. Even in the narrow realm of vertebrate zoology where male and female seem to be de-

fined by chromosomal or physiological properties, that is only the case some of the time. For example, power, more than random chance among those who have a penis, determines which mammals will win the chance to mate and which will be relegated to bachelorhood. Cleverness can sometimes triumph over power, but that is the exception. Cleverness, allure, and natural endowments play a far greater role with regard to which females become the bearers of the future generation. Science has not yet arrived at a consensus about how human sexuality has become so diverse, but the conclusion is that there definitely is a continuum between male and female with most humans somewhere in the area of “both/ and” when all factors are considered. In addition to physiological characteristics, those factors include sexual orientation, gender expression, and sexual practice. The important point, the great debate, in fact, is that this diversity is not contrary to nature, but consistent with the overall picture. Human sexuality may not exactly mirror the sexuality of trees, or even of chimpanzees, but diversity in human nature is natural in very analogous ways.

ones that involve penetration) or female (generally passive, the ones involving being penetrated) or neutral (generally ambiguous, not involving penetration of any orifice). “Let you do that to me? Oh, no! I’m a real man.” What would happen if the binary concept were to disappear and we had to come to terms with natural diversity? Sexual indicators would become obsolete. Costumes and language, which are social-cultural developments, would stop functioning as sexual indicators, first. Then would go the tones of voice and gestures and other physio-cultural clues. More gradually we would stop relying on body hair and conspicuous avoirdupois to tell us anything definitive about the persons we meet. Finally, we would even give up counting on Fred Rogers’ famous binary, “some are fancy on the outside, some are fancy on the inside.” None of these would tell us anything about the person’s overall sexuality. Most significantly, we would have to be relating to each other on more valid bases and give up chivalry as well as stereotyping and discrimination.

With regard to openness about sexual diversity Thailand is ahead of some other cultures, but not by far. We have three traditional sexualities: male, female and katoey. The accepted view is that katoeys are female with somewhat inconvenient male physiologies. So rather than undermining the binary concept, the presence of a third sex is discounted. Pretty much the same thing can be said for Thai sexual practices. They are divided into male (generally active, the 29

Part One; The Crossroads

I am married to a Thai guy, Thep. He once worked as a prostitute. Thep lacks formal education above the third grade. He was abandoned by his parents at age nine and raised by his grandmother in an impoverished farming village near the Thai /Cambodian border. He left home aged fifteen, entered the Pattaya working scene, became addicted to drugs (yaba) and spent the past three years struggling to recover from his addiction. Prior to our meeting he had already spent two years working. He was blessed with a combination of above average looks and a high level of street savvy. He sent the majority his money home to help his family and managed three separate bank accounts primarily for concealing the amount of money he was making from street vultures. He 30

mastered the art of survival, fending off those who wanted to borrow money, those who attempted to flat-out steal his money and the Mamasan’s who always had their hand in the pot. Then he had the task of navigating around the myriad of customers during the course of his work. Not an easy task for an uneducated 15-year-old boy from the jungle. Thep now speaks fluent English, cooks Thai cuisine at gourmet level, paints beautiful nature scenes using watercolours, and designs silk flower arrangements that appear professional. He has a flair for fashion, creates his own hairstyles, reads everything he gets his hands on and forgets nothing, runs circles around me with mathematics and debates the differences between Christianity and Buddhism like a scholar. He is both brilliant and gifted.

By the time Thep and I met, we were both pretty much at the crossroads. I had been butterflying my ass off for several years and needed something more fulfilling – and he had had his fill of his life as a prostitute and wanted the same. We became friends from the start - saw inside each other – liked what we saw – and wanted to see more. We started living together. He left the working scene. I left the butterfly path. Seven years have passed, and even with enough turbulence to down a jumbo jet, we are still together. According to Thep, the bar staff are taught that all farangs are considered liars! The other boys and the highly influential mamasans teach that no farang is to be trusted. No matter how much you like him – no matter what he gives you or promises you – do not EVER trust

him with your heart, because if you do, you will only end up getting hurt in the end. From day one, they are trained to focus on one thing and one thing only… So there you have it - the dynamics of the situation are cast in stone. The boys believe the farangs cannot be trusted and the farangs believe the boys cannot be trusted. Most attempts at relationship building within this set of dynamics are doomed to fail before they even begin. The “farang” stereotype I just described didn’t start in Boyztown Pattaya – it started back in the 60’s when the GI’s promised every Thai girl they sacked that they would return to marry them after the war was over and of course never returned, thus this stereotype of the farang is both aged and well embedded. Next month, Part 2; Building Trust

By James Hanson

About a year ago, I decided that I wanted to “give back” something to the Isaan community that I have so enjoyed becoming a part of. The husband of a friend of mine was turning 40, and the couple invited us to go to the local orphanage – a large home for girls here is Udon Thani – where they were preparing lunch for the girls as a way to make merit. We had an excellent day at the orphanage, and I decided that maybe I should focus my efforts in this area.

I did some research on the internet and discovered an organization that was working with a center for abused and “wayward” boys in Nong Hong Song, which is between Udon Thani and Nong Khai. Since then, my boyfriend and I have been heading up to the Children’s Development Center in Nong Hong Song about twice a month. While there, we help a local NGO which provides 32

full-time volunteers (mainly young adults from Europe and the U.S.) teach the boys (English, math, a little geography); prepare and cook them a nutritious lunch which we provide; and just play with the boys and shower them with attention – which they seem to relish! Some friends and relatives back home in Los Angeles provide donations once in awhile to buy clothes for the boys, as well.

The Center has, at any time, between twenty and twenty five boys, ranging in age from ten to eighteen. Some of the boys have been rejected and thrown out by their families after getting in trouble with the law, or because they have “low intelligence.” Other boys have been rescued by local authorities after it was found that their families were physically abusing them. Still others have suffered substance abuse issues in the past.

For boys who have had so many problems and probably have intense issues of trust, it is amazing to see how excited they seem when we drive up, and how positively they respond to us. Over the year, we have truly bonded with a majority of them. “Giving something back” to the community has turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences possible, and I urge any and all farangs living in Thailand, with a bit of time to spare, to look into it! For information about how you can help, please feel free to give me a call on (084) 424-3016. 33

Too Many Cooks? Cooking has had a place on our TV menus for so many years that many shows in the genre don’t even bother to stir the broth with instructions or recipes. The smorgasbord of piecemeal offerings has to have a gimmick to tempt you to the telly table and maintain your appetite for more. Marco Pierre White

The latest TV food fad is to turn the whole business into a reality game show where contestants compete for prizes tasty enough to distract them from their inevitable humiliation at the hob. The Chopping Block (True Vision TLC ch.153) has Marco Pierre White bringing the hapless hopefuls to the boil. He cuts like a razor Sabatier, ruthlessly slicing the cooks 34

down to size and prodding potential prudently, with a withering look or a well judged jab. Marco retired from cooking more than a decade ago, having accumulated a collection of mouth watering Michelin stars before becoming a star of the small screen kitchen and the chance for lucky contestants to learn from him is a prize in itself.

Hell’s Kitchen (True Vision Star World ch. 54) is presided over by the devil himself, Gordon Ramsay. Gordon was taught how to cut the mustard by Marco and has also been awarded his own Michelin stars. But pupil and teacher could not be more different. Where Marco serves incisive cool, Gordon instantly flambés his charges at the slightest slip. Hard boiled Ramsay remembers that Chef is French for Chief and that the brigade of kitchen staff is traditionally run by a military hierarchy. It’s General Gordon all the way as the arrogant and over egged contestants in Hell’s Kitchen are roasted by Ramsay’s rages as they are gradually eliminated until a winner is found. The unwise will answer him back and get a tongue lashing that slashes them down to little bitty bite sized portions of humility. From the safety of your sofa, Ramsay’s seething wrath is hilarious, beside himself with frothing fury, his thunderous tantrums storm the screen with multiple profanities requiring a sound cut and post production mouth blurring lest you can lip read. In 1994, Ramsay accepted a police caution for gross indecency involving him and two other men, both chefs, in the lavatory of a London underground station- you can bet that he was angry about t h a t and maybe still is.

Andrew Zimmern

Bizarre Food with Andrew Zimmern (True Vision TLC ch.153) is a plateful that is best sent back. Presented as a reality-docu-travel treat by this drug and alcohol rehabilitatee from New York, it is a gross and unnecessary excuse for the gross and unnecessary Zimmern to travel around the globe and munch on ‘delicacies’ that are bizarre. Nothing is as unappetising as watching him push variously toasted testicles or bugs into his ignorant pie hole. His condescending manner towards the proud peasants who share the spoils of their hunt is enough to make you sick. We can but pray for the day he encounters some cannibals with a penchant for short, fat, bald Americans; see him roasted on a spit and then spat out.

SIR DIRK BOGARDE This gay movie icon would have been 90 this year. Brian Baxter reflects on his career and recalls some personal memories.

For years, Dirk Bogarde was Britain’s top box office attraction: a product of the Rank ‘charm school’ who became a star, then an actor: from cover-boy of countless magazines as doctor in the house or leading man to self-exiled contributor to films by Visconti, Fassbinder, Resnais and Tavernier. From Britain’s skinny, closeted version of big brother Hollywood’s Rock Hudson to writer and committed actor-knight, he moved with a determination and intelligence belied by the glossy surface of the early years.

problems and heartaches of being a star performer, the dozen people in the cinema burst into applause. Bogarde was pleased and said, ‘I wrote that scene for Judy, they were her thoughts and emotions, expressed through my words’. It was as intensely biographical of the legendary entertainer as anything ever written.

I first met Dirk Bogarde in the mid-seventies at London’s National Film Theatre where I was programming movies, including a season of his work. He came to give an extended interview – with Margaret Hinxman, friend and author of a book about his career. The discussion was illustrated by excerpts from some of his films, chosen by my partner. During the Sunday morning run through of the clips, the few people in the auditorium were staff and BBC -TV technicians setting up lights and sound equipment for a recording of the event.

During his stay in London we saw him again with his long-time companion Tony. He was very taken with my partner Soren and invited us to visit them at their new home the following spring. May and work at the inevitable Caness Film Festival soon rolled around: a phone call confirmed an invitation to lunch. We were to drive up to Grasse and Tony (ex-actor and ex-husband of Glynis Johns) would guide us to the ‘retreat’ in the hills. They had not been in the house long, were still hacking out the pool, planting olive trees and had only one inside loo: male guests were asked to pee round the side of the house. They were sublimely content, quite simply ‘the best time of my life’.

After a clip from ‘I Could go on Singing’ in which Judy Garland breaks down, telling him (as her ex husband) of the

On later visits the building and grounds took splendid shape, especially the elegant drawing room, but it was never a

36

‘show place’, unlike the mansion of earlier years. It eventually became something of a burden and when Tony became ill, they moved to Paris then Dirk, alone, set up a home in a small flat ‘a short walk from Harrods’. Something of a recluse, he died in 1999. In various ways he impinged on our lives, but only those who knew him well, real friends and family were around in the last years. Bogarde had extraordinary charm, a sharp intelligence and a rather wicked tongue and pen. He became one of the screen’s finest actors and a talented writer with seven novels, innumerable short pieces and seven memoirs to his credit: the best being ‘A Postillion Struck by Lightning’. He was also a great letter writer and these have been collected in a companion volume by his biographer John Coldstream. In March this year DB would have been 90. This autumn marks the 50th anniversary of one of the three most important films of his career (the others being ‘The Blue Lamp’, which made him famous and ‘The Servant’, his first collaboration with Harold Pinter and Joseph Losey). But it was the 1961 ‘Victim’, in which he played a gay barrister, enmeshed in blackmail, that he finally let the grey hair show and became a character leading man. He and some critics sadly underrate the early successes, indeed almost everything pre –‘The Servant’, ‘Accident’ and the agonising ‘King and Country’. Fine, but so were ‘Hunted’ and ‘The Spanish Gardener’ (both opposite a wonderful

child actor Jon Whitely) and his first movie with Losey, ‘The Sleeping Tiger’, an intriguing film about the IRA, ‘The Gentle Gunman’ and ‘So Long at the Fair’, a period mystery story. And let’s not forget the film with Judy or the extravagant ‘The Singer not the Song’ or the serious ‘The Mind Benders’. The early films were less overtly ‘profound’ than those made later in the U.K. and Europe, but have compassion, truth and a lack of pretention. For me, he was too young in Visconti’s reverential ‘Death in Venice’ and the stunning boy as Tadzio too coquettish. ‘The Night Porter’ in a disaster and ‘The Damned’ no better. Both ‘The Despair’ and ‘Providence’ are cold, remote, and his last film ‘Daddy, Nostalgie’ rather a bore. ‘King and Country’ and others remain more memorable than any of the so-called ‘masterpieces’. But nothing can detract from the over all breadth of his career, or the gayness implicit in it, which despite the closetedness, is there to see. It must have been exhilarating to know him well, but few people ever did it seems, a silken shield protected him. Perhaps the near monologue written for Judy was as much about him as about his costar.

Food Fibs Many widely held beliefs about food and healthy eating are merely fiction. Here Out in Thailand looks at three common food myths. Fiction Low fat foods are low in calories Fact This is one of the most common food fictions. Low fat does not mean low calories; calories are added to food in many ways. Fat has calories but so to do carbohydrates and proteins. ‘Low fat’ foods often have high sugar and flour content that contain calories so ‘low fat’ foods may have as many calories as ordinary foods.

By Doc John

Ask Darika

Fiction Fruit juice is just as nutritious as whole fruit. Fact Besides added sugar, fruit juices contains the natural sugar fructose. Fresh fruits and vegetables are fibre rich and aid digestion; fibre reduces cholesterol and blood sugar levels. When fruit is processed into juice most of the fibre is lost but fructose remains eventually being converted to sugar.

(This letter has been translated from Tinglish into English. Darika did not dream it up.) Dear Darika,

Fiction Eating too many sweet foods can cause diabetes

I am a young Thai man living in (it does not matter) and I have big trouble. Two years ago my best friend wanted to borrow me 2.5 million baht to buy some land He has no family to give him money. I am not rich but I asked my friend in UK to help. He was my teacher and we have been friends for a long time until he retired and moved back to his home town.

Fact Sweet foods don’t cause diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin or to properly use insulin. Certain conditions increase the risk of diabetes; overweight or gross obesity being the most significant. Maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise reduces the risk of diabetes.

My teacher friend was very generous and loaned me 2.5 million and So my friend bought the land. The people who sold it had lived there for ten years but the deed was a fake and they did not own the land at all. They kept the money and still live nearby. I hired a lawyer and we went to the police to make a criminal complaint. I have paid about 40,000 of my own money for this so far.

38

These are just the tip of the food fiction iceberg. The best way to separate fact from fiction is to ask a doctor, a dietician or nurse.

Every few weeks the police in (it does not matter) call me and they want 50,000 baht before they send the case to the court. Every time they call I cry for a long time because I feel very terrible. I have no way to pay my teacher back and I do not have 50,000 to give to the police. I heard that you can sell a part of your body like a kidney and you can get a lot of money for it. I want to sell both of my kidneys and everything else. Please help me do this. I do not want anyone to think I cheated my friend. Sam in (it does not matter) Dear Sam, Honestly I thought your letter was just as phony as the deed you mentioned until we had our first long telephone chat. I can appreciate the angst are suffering. Only someone who is honest and responsible would be taking this mess as seriously as you are. I commend you for that. Your solution to this problem is indeed creative, although a bit desperate. I know you are serious and not simply looking for Darika’s sympathy. What you are saying, in essence, is that you would end your own life to pay off a loan. That does not seem very practical since you cannot be sure the loan will actually be repaid if you are dead. You suggested in our conversation that I might somehow broker this kind of transaction, which I will not. Do you think your teacher would even want to accept money that came from selling both kidneys, a liver, a heart, two lungs, corneas and everything else? 39

You have not said whether your teacher friend is pressuring you to pay him back, so it sounds as if he is not. People rarely loan money they cannot afford to lose, and he did not require anything from you to secure the loan. Clearly you feel very guilty about what has happened, but this pressure is coming entirely from yourself and probably not from the teacher. You have also not mentioned how much responsibility your land-buying friend is taking. Does he fell as terrible as you do about borrowing 2.5 million from you and losing it? It seems to me that he should be the one to pay lawyers and bribe cops. Maybe you would feel better of you shared the pressure you are under with him. Sue him.

I hope and pray for the best for you. Please call me now and then to assure me that your basic equipment remains intact. Love, M

Fifty thousand is a lot of money. You could probably pay to have the people who swindled you trampled by elephants and still have money left over. Nevertheless, having your day in court seems imperative. Explain the cop calls to your lawyer and insist that (s)he inform the court that the police are attempting to extort money and are obstructing justice. Maybe one of my readers has a better suggestion. Sam, you need to face the possibility that this episode might not have a happy ending. Darika hates to see you torture yourself for the rest of your life because of a mistake that you cannot be held responsible for. Please, for your own sake, get some professional counseling so that you can creatively manage pressure and guilt. I will do what I can to find someone who can help you deal with your feelings and put everything into perspective even though such people are difficult to find in this crazy country. 40

OUT in Bangkok B

Bangkok is the frenzied hub of Thailand. The Skytrain and MRT (subway) have made it much easier to get around, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

Recommended Attractions: • Jim Thompson’s Houses • National Museum/Wang Na Palace with its excellent exhibits for a slice of Thai history • Wat Arun for breathtaking views of Bangkok and Chayo Phraya River • Grand Palace/Wat Phra Kaew with its amazing Emerald Buddha, colourful mosaics and glittering spires • Wat Pho, Bangkok’s oldest temple and home of the Reclining Buddha • Wat Traimitr (Golden Buddha) Chatuchak Park Weekend Market, the most famous of Bangkok’s markets, where you can buy almost anything at amazing prices if you bargain Lumpini Park to relax and take a break from the chaos of Bangkok and to view the weightlifters in the early morning The Bangkok Gay Scene Bangkok has a plethora of gay venues unrivalled in Asia. Most Foreigners go to Suriwongse, Silom and along Sathorn

Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station, Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize. Disco Disco is another party palace. Between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage salons. Soi Duangth43

awee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located. Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais, expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to

those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! Within easy reach is Koh Samed for a Paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe, try Ao Phai Beach, which is very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd. OUT iT recommends Silver Sand Resort- www. silversandsamed.com

OUT in Chiang Mai C

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations- a feature that attracts Thais and foreign tourists, especially for the February Flower Festival, Songkran in April, Loy Krathong in November and New Year revellers. Great retail therapy is available at Central Airport Plaza and the walking street market on the Rachamadoen Road, every Sunday.

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 54

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and hap-

pening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars

and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Nearby you will find the excellent Blues Club Massage for a truly personal service in Lanna luxury. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and CBC yellow-metered taxis. ad.Horizontal size 98x64.5 mm.ai 1 10-May-11 11:27:03 AM

Phuket has two big, but very different show/cabaret theatres: Simon Cabaret in Patong Beach is known for one of the best ladyboy shows in Thailand. The show is regularly updated and tickets can be bought almost anywhere. The 21.30 pm performance may be best as large tour groups often occupy the earlier shows. Phuket Fantasia in Kamala is an indoor theatre, which seats several thousand and tells the spectacular story of the Prince of Kamala. Watch out for elephants and aerial acrobatics! 64

Visit Promthep Cape, the southernmost point of Phuket and is especially beautiful around sunset, the Big Buddha overlooking Chalong Bay, which is over 25 meters wide and 45 meters high, adorned with 135 ton of white jade marble, and nearby Wat Chalong. There are nature parks, waterfalls and diving, snorkeling and sailing. Shop ‘til you drop in modern air conditioned malls in Phuket Town as well as in the main beach resort of Patong Beach. Phuket Town has a charm of its own, especially the old ChinesePortuguese quarter. 65

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel, called Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are situated on the exit road out of Paradise Complex, with most of the gay (friendly) hotels & guesthouses, and cabaret/go-go bars, a gay sauna, disco’s, go-go and host bars, restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, etc. Cabaret shows are in 3 go-go bars of which My Way is the oldest and biggest, as well as Tangmo and Yes (formerly Dempsey’s) totally refitted and styled, and 2 disco’s, Kiss Club and Boat Bar. This last one has just finished a total makeover. The shows at the 3 go-go bars are mainly later in the evening and at the disco’s after midnight. A lot of effort is put in these shows, and most patrons bounce from one to the next. Also popular are the outdoor “Beer Bars” of which the most popular now are Sundowners and Connect (which also serves western and Thai food all day), also My Way, Time Bar and James Dean & Friends. The more upscale, lounge style bars are CHIC and Orchid Lounge, which are located oppo-

site each other. Let’s not forget the outdoor bars of Kiss and Boat Bar. Kiss has a lively outdoor set-up while Boat Bar is known for its friendly atmosphere. We can also recommend Knud’s Bar next to Spartacus massage. The newest bar, Temptasian, is on the main walk way into the complex, along with the famous massage house for men, Blue Dolphin. For all the venues, check out our map of Paradise Complex. Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venue’s worth the visit. Among them the oldest gay venue, the go-go/karaoke bar Superboys in Soi Yaiyui (roughly half way between the gay beach and Paradise Complex). Next to them is cafe/bar The Backstage, which also serves good Thai fast food, coffee and is slowly starting to build its own little cabaret show. Near Paradise is James Dean Bar, roughly behind Paradise, and a little further away, the recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar.

OUT in Koh Samui W

With jungle covered craggy hills, lush coconut plantations, and quiet beaches, balmy evenings Koh Samui is the perfect place to kick back, recharge and of course party a little. Samui is Thailand’s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. For gay men the Emerald Green Mens Club in north Chaweng is the premier gay only destination for high quality, man 4 man massage and body treatments, they also provide their services in the spa at the super chic X2 Resort Samui, south of Lamai. 74

The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. Taxis are notoriously expensive but songtaew pick-up trucks are a cheap de facto public bus service. If you want a tour around Samui or go diving with a gay guide, contact Rainbow Scuba & Tour. There is plenty of eye candy on the many idyllic beaches around the island.

When you feel hungry there is a huge variety of places to eat, from top of the bill restaurants to cheap eateries and Thai market stalls. Check out eating options in OUT iT Magazine or on the website at the end of this article or cruise the Internet; your hotel will have a copy of the Samui dining guide. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has two cabaret clubs, both in central Chaweng featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret above the entrance to Khun Chaweng Resort pumps out a classy, fast paced show while just past the north end Starbucks is Moulin Rouge, recently expanded and refurbished. Shows for both are daily, kick in about 8.30 pm with bar service and free entry. Over the hill in Lamai, opposite Holiday Park Resort is Sabai Bar a gay/mixed bar open daily from 5 pm. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Chaweng is a late hour party town. From midnight Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and

Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, mixed crowds, no frills bar service, daily until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro is Mekkala Men Spa an intimate massage business run by long established Samui resident, Khun AJ. A short distance further on in Mae Nam is gK Men’s spa close to Bandara Resort for a range of massage styles and treatments. Pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at any gay venue for an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings. There are no gay hotels on Samui. There are a wide range of accommodation options from famous brand name hotels through to exclusive private villas or simple, Samui style bungalows and good quality, gay only, owner occupied B&Bsomething for all needs. Check out the options on the website below or search the Internet. Websites for all the gay businesses in this guide and more detailed information on gay accommodation, bars, restaurants, massage, things to do, what to be aware of @ www.gaykohsamui.net & www. gaykohsamui.com 75

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets, from local street stalls, to five star gourmet haut cuisine. Water sports include diving, jet skiing and parasailing. Try Gokarting or bungee jumping or a massage at one of the many salons. There are many gyms and exercise facilities.

Just some sample highlights around Pattaya; Pattaya Elephant Village has guided tours through the jungle on elephant back, ox cart, rafting, and much more. Nong Nooch Tropical Garden has beautiful landscaped gardens and amazing panoramas. Don’t miss the French Garden and Orchid display. Also daily cultural and elephant shows as well as a charming zoo at this “Chelsea Flower Show” winning Garden. Tiffany’s and Alcazar Ladyboy cabaret shows, both on second road, are a feast of glamour and

80

glitz. Tiffany’s in particular is energetic and tours the world with its spectacular show. The crystal clear waters of Koh Larn, are 45 minutes by ferry. This island, the nearest to Pattaya of many, offers relaxation in the most tropical of styles.

Gay Pattaya In the day time, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach is a short ride from Pattaya. Here you can relax in deckchairs or on loungers, and be waited on all day. It is, however, in the evening when the city comes truly alive. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. The Copa Showbar has an exciting, twice nightly, cabaret show and a unique erotic underwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”. The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightly is not to be missed. In Soi 3, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know.

The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex. Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of the many beer bars particularly notable are Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above. Finally, for the true Night Owls, Pattaya offers a selection of world class late night discos. Dave Man Club and Nab are just two terrific venues where you can dance the night away, surrounded by super sexy Coyote dancers, until the wee small hours of the morning. For more information see: www.nickysgaypattaya.com www.boyztown-pattaya.com www.suneeplaza.info www.pattayahotmale.com Within easy reach is Koh Samed for a Paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe, try Ao Phai Beach, which is very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd. OUT iT recommends Silver Sand Resort- www.silversandsamed.com
