Sir Ian McKellen Speaks OUT

Despite the hectic round of prepublicity for the first of the new Tolkien trilogy, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, released this month, the world-renowned actor and gay activist found time for a personal interview with James Barnes.

Actors are a funny old lot and movie stars are even more peculiar. Their own insecurities are the key to their ease and comfort in pretending to be someone else. They are relieved by inhabiting characters other than their own. Peter Sellers, a very difficult talent, famously said that he did not even know who he was. Over the years, I have encountered numerous personal heroes, many of whom have been

a disappointment; with some trepidation, I approached the interview with Sir Ian McKellen, the champion I had admired for so long. He was born in Lancashire and retains a just hint of that warm, northern English accent in his luxuriant voice. Having won more awards as a classical actor than you could shake an Oscar at, 11

e are right. Remember, we have the W moral high ground here. It is not often that any cause can claim this but we can. Any argument for the equality of gay people is right. he came out in 1988 when the homophobic Thatcher government in the UK ratified Section 28, a pernicious piece of legislation, designed to limit further the already paltry local government budget for GLTB support. Coming out on a BBC broadcast displayed considerable courage. At this time, AIDS was front-page news. The UK press were plumbing the stinking depths of an anti gay sewer with their, ‘Gay Plague’ headlines and many gay showbiz figures retreated further into the closet, fearing professional suicide. He has been a tireless activist and gay campaigner on the world stage ever since, co-founding Stonewall UK.

His movie career ignited when he played the British film director, James Whale in the excellent ‘Gods and Monsters’, which told the tale of Whale’s ‘friendship’ with a handsome gardener. Whale was openly gay in 1930’s Hollywood and was clearly a character with whom McKellen had much empathy. His cinematic portrayal of Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’, for which he wrote the screenplay, was brilliant. His audience mushroomed after he played Magneto in the X-Men series and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He distinguished himself in a number of television productions, shone as disgraced British cabinet minister John Profumo in ‘Scandal’ and gave a towering performance as an old Nazi in Bryan Singer’s, ‘Apt Pupil’. He won a clutch of awards for his portrayal of Salieri in the Broadway production of Peter Shaffer’s ‘Amadeus’, a Tony for the incomparable, ‘Bent’ and he famously played Iago as gay in Trevor Nunn’s celebrated production of ‘Othello’.

His assistant introduces him to me with his title and name and those familiar tones greet me with, “Hello, my dear James!” A soft but quite definite self-assuredness dissolves any trepidation. This man is so comfortable in his own skin that he does not need to hide in a role. He has nothing to prove and his honesty is at the potent heart of his performance; no matter if, he is playing a wicked tyrant or a mischievous 7,000-year-old wizard with a boyish penchant for fireworks.

With his reprise of Gandalf in ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, released this month, he is engulfed by an endless round of press and chat show interviews: does he enjoy this part of his job? “It’s wonderful! I am just so pleased that we are able to share Tolkien’s work with so many people around the world.” Reminded of his first, big screen success in ‘Gods and Monsters’, he says, “Of course, that was a very important film for me. It was made in Hollywood and was the story of an English gay man who was ‘out’, in Hollywood.” But there is a hint in his voice that although the two clearly had a lot in common, Ian McKellen still harbours a more than sneaky admiration for the man famed for the Boris Karloff ‘Frankenstein’ and his masterpiece, ‘Bride of Frankenstein’.

McKellen’s masterpiece was a screen version of Shakespeare’s, ‘Richard III’; he produced it, wrote the screenplay and took the lead role with a stellar cast that included, Annette Bening, Jim Broadbent, Robert Downey Jr., Nigel Hawthorne and Maggie Smith. “Shakespeare wrote it for the stage and I wrote the screenplay but it was the director (Richard Loncraine) who brought the cinematic quality.” Set in an alternative 1930’s fascist England, the film was a triumph but for Ian McKellen, it holds some uncomfortable memories: “I produced it and raised the money- I won’t be doing that again!” The film was a financial failure although many critics regard it as the seminal screen Shakespeare. Though he does not discount playing Shakespeare on screen again, “I will, if asked but all the past productions are on DVD; including ‘Macbeth’, in which I played with Judi Dench.” He fondly recalls them both attending a dinner dance in the throne room at Buckingham Palace, dancing together she remarks that she could not see the thrones. He waltzed her behind the band that was in front of the regal seats for monarch and consort and without thinking about it, Macbeth and his Lady sat on the thrones! 13

He is obviously excited by The Hobbit: “I am hoping that people enjoy it,” he confides. “The first person I met when I returned to New Zealand to film it was Elijah Wood, then Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis, together with many of the Lord of the Rings crew, it really felt like I was coming home.” The incredibly varied cast for this latest venture into Middle Earth includes, Dominic Cumberbatch (TV’s Sherlock), comic turned actor Billy Connolly, Stephen Fry and Dame Edna’s alter ego, Barry Humphries as the Goblin King. ‘The Office’ actor, Martin Freeman, brings young Frodo Baggins to life in The Hobbit. “He brings a wonderful humanity and humour to the part,” says Sir Ian, generously. 14

“Of course, it is back to Gandalf the Grey,” says the actor of this prequel, “Sixty years younger than Gandalf the White in Return of the King. I did chat to director Peter Jackson about it and we decided that considering the character is 7,000 years old, it wouldn’t make much difference!” McKellen does however prefer the Grey to the White, who he sees as being less playful. Weta Workshop, now a major player in world cinema, will handle the technicalities of delivering The Hobbit in 3-D; an innovation that has not pleased hardcore fans but Sir Ian is reassuring: “There won’t be things flying out of the screen at you, it is more subtle, rather the 3-D will take you into Middle Earth.”

When I mention the fledgling movement for gay marriage in Thailand, OUT in Thailand Magazine launched in November, he becomes more animated than any Weta creation: “There is a fair indication that Thailand will join the rest of the world in this,” he says. “Marriage belongs to the people who want it, NOT the church. There are so many countries that are backward- just look at Russia- and this initiative in Thailand gives the people there the chance to lead the way.” His tone is powerfully authoritative: “We are right. Remember, we have the moral high ground here. It is not often that any cause can claim this but we can. Any argument for the equality of gay people is right.” I ask him if he has ever visited the Kingdom. “No, I have never been to Thailand and I have never been married!”

he laughs. “But I do have a dear friend who has recently emigrated there so I may find myself there for a visit.” I ask him to let me know when he is due so that we can find him a beautiful Thai husband. He roars with laughter: “Now that sounds like a wonderful idea!” My hero left intact. He remains the greatest living British actor, a gifted and sensitive writer (see his blogs at ianmckellen. com) and I am proud of having this remarkable human being as both a spokesman and a role model for myself and gay people everywhere. Spared by the Bell By Kenneth Dobson

Condor had not expected to be this miserable. After all, this was his “trip of a lifetime”. He’d planned and saved for years, and then his mother’s illness had wiped out what he’d put away. The second nest-egg hadn’t taken quite as long, but he had hurried to make this trip just the same, before something else happened. Now here he was all alone on Christmas Eve. It shouldn’t feel like this.

OK. Gay guys are lonely on holidays. The law of the universe dictates this measure of misery in payment for the privilege of being gay. Condor chuffed bitterly at this ironic notion he’d just had. Condor stared out from the veranda of his hotel at the sluggish Ping River. Darkness filled the Chiang Mai sky, but the water glittered festively with the lights of the city. Two large restaurants hugged the riverbank upriver from where he sat. They mocked the spirit of Christmas Eve, Condor thought. Everything was wrong. There weren’t supposed to be mosquitoes, there was supposed to be frost, he wasn’t supposed to be alone. 16

This was Christmas Eve, for God’s sake! Why had Jesus done it? Condor chuffed another stifled laugh. “Not that Jesus, my Jesus,” Jesus Garcia Alvarez, his lover for the past 7 years until a year ago. “Gone. Won’t think about it. What’s to think about? But on Christmas Eve I’m not going to go back there.” He thought vaguely about the narrow lanes where he’d found the massage places and farther on where the gay discos were turning on their strobe lights and mirrored balls about now. Condor fought the idea of wandering back down

the Night Bazaar’s labyrinthine alleyways in search of an hour’s companionship. He’d done that last night. And the night before. There was a chilly breeze blowing down the Ping River. Condor ignored it. He’d been sweltering all day. He deserved to shiver and be miserable, if not from the heat then from the cold. Determined, resolutely, to be miserable, Condor focused his attention onto the dark building across the river. Anybody could tell it was a church. It was straight out of the Great Plains of North America in the 19th Century. What right did it have to be dark? This was Christmas Eve! The doors should be open, there should be crowds coming from all directions. The place was locked up. It was a sacrilege! Condor drifted back into this childhood. It wasn’t that long ago. Every Christmas Eve his mother dragged him, no (“dragged” was too harsh a word), “took” him to a white frame church like the one across the river. They went in the rusty Plymouth. On Christmas Eve St. Mark’s Church was ablaze with lights, the way a white frame church should be, people coming from every direction. The mellow glow faded. Condor glared at the silent monster across the river, dark and wrong. A cute waiter asked him again if he’d like anything to drink. The bartender was cute, too. Condor ordered a Scotch and soda to dull his misery or sharpen it, one or the other.

Then it came, the sound of a church bell. There was no mistaking that sound. Once you’d heard it you never forgot. But the bell was not coming from the forbidding belfry just across the river. It was coming from farther upstream, beyond the bridge. One, two blocks away, Condor figured. Five, ten minutes walk. Condor signed the bar bill with his name and room number and looked again at the tree-darkened expanse on the other side of the Nawarat Bridge. There were lights among the trees after all, people moving into the gates. About twenty minutes later Condor was settled in the church that an hour ago he had not known was hidden there. There were mountains of poinsettias and hundreds of little twinkling lights. The whole place announced, “Christmas.” The proceedings were all about children, Condor concluded. There was a tiny pageant with terribly serious Mary and Joseph about 3-feet tall and the baby-doll lying in a manger. There were children’s choirs – at least three of them, and the same Christmas carols as he’d sung back in St. Mark’s Church in Iowa. Condor’s icy misery melted little by little. “Come on. Come with,” a merry young male voice said in excellent English. The service was over and people were spreading back out in all directions. Condor glanced around to see to whom the invitation had been directed and found himself fixed in the gaze of a pair of sparkling dark eyes that would melt granite. “We’re going to serenade the governor. You come too.” And he did. 17

Suriwongse Road is where the go-go bars are; located on Soi Duangthawee right up the street from the Tarntawan Hotel, a great gay hotel. Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant for some great Thai or western food before hitting the bars. There are many to choose from, Dream Boys, Boys BKK, X-Boys, Fresh Beach Boys and Classic Boys, to name a few. Between Suriwongse and Silom is Soi Thaniya and Up2 Hair and Beauty Salon, known for giving a great facial among other services. This super friendly business was voted best by OUT iT readers in the 2012 Awards. Silom has the most to see, with three Soi’s offering some great gay venues. Silom Soi 2, featuring the famous DJ Station and other pubs, it is popular with Thais, making that Soi the busiest on Silom. A two-minute walk away is Silom Soi 2/1, where you will find @Diamond’s Pub & Restaurant (Thai & western food), Men Factory Sauna and G Club (after hours dancing). About 4 minutes from there is Silom Soi 4, with Sphinx Restaurant, Balcony Pub, Telephone Pub, BAS, The 20

In between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage shops to stop in at to have a great massage and relax. On Soi Sala Daeng, check out Senso Massage , Homme Massage and a couple of Soi’s down is a nice gay guest house, Baan Sala Daeng. For some fine dining check out Coyote Restaurant and Eat Me Restaurant on Soi Convent. Down a-ways on Naratiwat is the OmYim Lodge for a reasonably priced guesthouse. The Sathorn area has Babylon Sauna, featuring a fantastic sauna and guest-

house. Close by is Vincent’s Seven Rooms Guesthouse. There are several massage shops in Sathorn Road; see the OUT iT a map. The newest and probably the best in the area is THE PRINCE, in a beautifully decorated ultra modern complex with lots of handsome guys and many great packages from which to choose. Bonny Massage, located in Duangthawee Plaza on Suriwongse Road, has been around for several years. The new one in Duangthawee Plaza is Bangkok Massage, operated by the same owner as X-Boys.

Sauna’s of Bangkok

Babylon Sauna is probably the most famous sauna in the world. Another sauna not too far from there is Heaven Saunaon Silom, close to the river, but walking distance from the Silom gay area. Chakran Sauna is near Soi Aree, very close to the BTS. In the Thai neighbourhood of Ramkhamhaeng is Farose II Spa and Sauna with a fully equipped gym in a great garden setting. 21

Bangkok’s Go-Go Shows

There are many great Go-Go bars in the Suriwongse area- perfect if you are looking for a good show, some companionship, or just a fun night out. Dream Boys, in Duangthawee Plaza, is a favourite. Just across the Soi are X-Boys and Fresh Boys. Just down the Soi, is Classic Boys. They feature a large “fish tank” with young men swimming about. Just across Suriwongse Road, opposite BoyzTown, back in the parking lot of the Suriwongse Hotel is Jupiter Go-Go. It is very nicely decorated, and has many great looking guys. TAWAN BAR is on Soi Tawan, very near the Tarntawan Hotel, between Suriwonge Rd and Silom. This bar is very well established and if you like muscular older young men this is the place for you. The guys are mostly straight and very muscular, but they aim to please. They feature an erotic S & M show with leather gear, 22

whips, and is a rare fetish treat. During the daytime, you can see many of them exercising at Lumpinee Park. If you keep walking up Soi Tawan, it becomes Soi 6; turn right into Soi Anuman with several Go-Go bars to check out. One of the originals that is more than 20 years old now is Golden Cock where you can still get a cold beer at noon. With places called, Nice Boys, Super A, Nature Boy, and Solid Bar, how can you go wrong? Be sure to check the ID of any of the young men you may decide to get acquainted with to make sure they are the age of consent.

Other Areas of Bangkok To Explore Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) is probably the busiest gay area in Thailand. It draws hundreds of university students, working professional Thais, and those that just like a good time. With names like, See Men, Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, Crazy Dance Club and Lamsalee Dance Pub, it is a night to remember. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the visiting foreigners and expats are welcome. The atmosphere is one of friends, partying and hunting. Here the Thai’s can be themselves, without having to worry about the “stigma” of being seen as a “money boy” to the foreign tourist. Kampaang Pet Road (Or Tor Kor) is also very popular with the university students and working Thais, close to Chatachuk (Weekend Market). With names like Asian Pub, ICY Pub, August Sum, and most popular Mogue, it is a great place to check out. Saphan Kwai (Pradiphat) has mostly ka-

raoke pubs (host bars) and a couple of saunas. Adonis Sauna, Farose I Sauna, Adam Karaoke (probably the most popular), Eagle Pub Stax (formerly go-go) and Charming Pub. This area is where the Thai’s go looking for a young man to spend the evening with, or go to a sauna to “relax”. Located between Aree and Saphan Kwai BTS, it is very easy to get to. Keep in mind; this is a “Thai Scene”, with different culture and rules; mostly a Thai Rak Thai (Thai for Thai) culture, they are not money boys. Please respect them for who they are. When it comes to drinking, you will find that most groups of Thais buy bottles of Whiskey and drink that for the evening. 23

King Chulalongkorn, (Rama V) best known to foreigners as the royal student of Anna Leonowens, the British teacher in the royal Thai court (Anna & The King/ The King and I), signed the Treaty of Chiang Mai in 1883. This royal decree permitted foreigners like the British men of the East Borneo Company to cut trees across the vast teak forests of northern Thailand for commercial purposes. 24

For those first Europeans to settle here, Chiang Mai in the 1880’s offered glory and hardship in equal measure. By royal decree, foreigners lived on the opposite side of the Ping River from the Thai people whom they called “Siamese.” In the early years, foreign wives were not allowed to settle, up north. The men who rode elephants into the jungle, then returned to ‘civilized’ society with tennis, squash and polo. Anna’s son Louis Leonowens joined the East Borneo Company in 1886, opening its Chiang Mai office in 1889. During Louis’ tenure as Superintendent for the Company in Chiang Mai, he opened the Company’s office along the Ping River on January 24, 1896. Three sprawling teak houses, each with more than 100 teak pillars were placed or built on this site and a fourth, 137 Pillars House as we now know it, was moved over from the west side of the river to the Company’s land in the foreigner’s enclave and he briefly lived here. The house, named for the number of sturdy teak columns that form its support, served as residence of the Company manager until 1927 though 25

it remained part of Company headquarters until World War II. The Japanese invaded Thailand in December 1941 and commandeered all the Company’s Chiang Mai assets including this house. Most of the Company’s Chiang Mai staff escaped to freedom by walking to Burma. In the post WWII years, the Company returned to the north of Thailand but sold its Chiang Mai headquarters to William Bain, a Scotsman educated at Harrow who at age 23 had fled his family’s expectation for Chiang Mai, where he joined the Company. William married a local Mon girl, and together they raised a family of two daughters and two sons. Son Jack followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the company and raising his own family on these grounds. The latest chapter in the long and fabled history of this unique house begins in 2002 when Bangkok born

Gay Russians Rushing Abroad!

Last month we ran a story on the delights of Moscow but for Russian gays the climate has changed following the â&#x20AC;&#x153;prehistoricaâ&#x20AC;? under Putin. Now, Russians who want to express their gay selves travel. Plenty of them can be seen in Pattaya but many more choose destinations closer to home.

Almost 20 years ago, in May 1993, prosecution for gay sex was abolished in Russia. But in 2012 the authorities in many parts if the country - including St Petersburg, Arkhangelsk and Ryazan have adopted a law that bans spreading «homosexual propaganda» to minors. So now I cannot even tell anyone that I am gay and that I am happy - because that would be classed as so-called «homosexual propaganda».

With statistics demonstrating that many gay teenagers are at risk of committing suicide because of discrimination or persecution by their schoolmates, it is of obvious importance to communicate the facts that homosexuality is a normal condition and that they are not “sick”. But, unfortunately, any doctor or teacher who offers such psychological support to gay young people - or who tells other youngsters that it is acceptable to be a gay person - will now be breaking the law by spreading “gay propaganda”! 33

In fact the whole issue of homosexuality is now a taboo subject on Russian TV - unless someone wants to criticise gay people. At the same time, almost all politicians and journalists are eager to demonstrate extreme homophobia and hatred towards gays. It is hard to believe that, in this respect at least; Russia is a 21st century European country, as it behaves more like a medieval one complete with its own terrifying Inquisition. So how has this state of affairs come about in the past 20 years? Why is homophobia so widespread! Why have the 34

authorities in our capital city Moscow forbidden any gay pride events since they were first attempted in 2005? Why are neo-Nazi hooligans allowed to get away with attacking Moscow’s gay clubs? Why do the police arrest marchers in gay parades instead of the vicious thugs who attack them while chanting “Heil, Hitler!” One of the most important answers to those questions is the rise of Orthodox Christianity that has occurred since the fall of the Soviet Union. Fostered by leaders in the Kremlin who were looking for

a creed to unify the nation, religion has become one of the most important factors in contemporary Russian life. It has been fostered in the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education system and within the armed forces. There are increasing numbers of religious programmes on television and the government offers support for churches in a wide variety of other ways. Priests attack homosexuality as a mortal sin on a daily basis and claim that it must - and will be punished. Thus we see crowds of religious fanatics attacking gay and lesbian clubs with the tacit support of the Russian government and authorities. Gay people in Russia today live in an atmosphere of widespread anti-gay hysteria reminiscent of the Taliban!

Fortunately, it is far easier for Russian people to travel abroad these days and, within relatively easy reach, there are several more progressive, peaceful and hospitable countries that welcome gay people. The Czech Republic is one such place and, in its very gay-friendly capital city, Prague, there are plenty of bars and clubs, as well as the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldestestablished gay hotel Villa Mansland with Harry Niessner at the helm. The Villa is Pragueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique gay resort where you will find the warmest of welcomes from both the staff and other like-minded guests. For Russian people, it is a gay paradise. 35

A Real Thai Superstar ‘Bird’ Thongchai Musicologist, Jai Pee looks at Thailand’s most successful pop star who has achieved something most Thai singers have not– broken through the barriers to become an international success; something very rare in the history of Thai music. Thongchai “Bird” McIntyre, who was born Albert Thongchai McIntyre in 1958, is the most famous pop singer, releasing singles and albums for over 25 years. His first appearance on the music scene came in 1986 and since then he has reached the dizzy heights as Thailand’s No.1 Superstar. He is also known as Bird Thongchai, Phi Bird (literally ‘elder brother Bird’) or simply Bird. He is a Peter Pan popster who has never married but who has never ‘come out’ as being gay, regardless of all the whispered speculation.

So here we have something of a Thai superstar – very unusual for Thailand – as the majority of successful Thais tend to stay within the country’s borders. To emphasize this point can you name an internationally famous Thai painter, architect, sculptor, pianist, etc? This astonishing singer is something of a trailblazer and a living legend. A little history helps to explain his great success. Bird was born in Bangkok to parents James and Udom McIntyre. They had a musical background and he enjoyed an upbringing in a supportive environment. His father died when Bird was

still a child and after leaving school, the young man started working as a bank clerk when he met the famous Thai TV producer Kai Varayuth who saw entertainment talent in Bird. He played his first TV series with Kai while still working in the bank. This initial role began to reveal his talent. His most memorable part was that of Captain Kobori in Koo Kam, the tragic love story between a Japanese soldier, played by Bird and a local Thai girl during World War II. He starred in both a TV series and subsequently reprised the role in the 1996 film adaptation, Sunset at Chaophraya. He has won many best actor awards and other honours from TV and Drama as well as in the music field. Bird is best known for his Thai pop and luk thung music. ‘Luk thung’ is country mu37

sic that is very popular in the expansive northeast with a strong Lao influence; it deals with the everyday trials and tribulations of rural life and includes a good many love songs. In fact, he has released an album purely of dance tunes (Bird Dance Collection 2009) and another solely of love songs (Bird Love Collection 2009).He reached the zenith of his musical career in the early nineties. Among his best-known songs are Duay Rak Lae Pook Pan, Koo Gud, Sabai Sabai and Kob Jai Jing Jing. His popular singles released recently include luk thung’ songs Mah Tummai with Jintara Poonlarp, Fan Ja (with several other stars including Jintara), Lao Su Kan Fang, and Yak Tham Kor Tob and Mai Kang Ying Pae from his album “Volume One”. An awardwinning documentary on his life entitled “Crossing Borders” directed by Phanjanit Garnploog, can be seen at St. John’s University in New York, which includes rare interviews with the director. One of 38

his most popular albums, released almost 10 years ago, Bird Sek, features some of his most celebrated songs including the much played and catchy single ‘Sabai, sabai’. The album also features some strong and impassioned guitar playing by Sek Loso, lead guitarist with the Isaan group ‘Loso’. Bird’s musical style ranges from quite fierce rock numbers such as Gawn Puat to lyrical and beautifully crafted love songs like Ton Mai Kawng Paw. His voice is powerful and energetic when it needs to be but also melodious and tender in other settings. He delivers his music on stage in a passionate and determined manner and this style and high quality performance comes across on all his recent albums. In late 2007, he released another album entitled Simply Bird, which features songs such as Chuay Rap Tee and Mee Tae Kid Tueng. His last album was named Why The Tears? released in 2011.

Homeland Insecurity Homeland (True Vision chs. FOXP & AXN) is based on an Israeli series called Hatufim (Prisoners of War) and is a post 9/11 Manchurian Candidate-like caper that won almost every TV award for season one but does it maintain the suspense in series two?

US marine sergeant Nicholas Brody, played by British actor, Damian Lewis has been liberated from an eight year incarceration in an al-Qeada hell hole in Iraq and returned to the bosom of his family and country as a hero. CIA agent, Carrie Mathison (Clare Danes) thinks heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turned terrorist. Her boss does not. Carrie has sex with Brody and changes her mind. But so has her boss. We see Brody, secretly praying to Allah in his garage, so that means he is a terrorist, right? Wrong. We know heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a baddie because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s British with an American accent- Hollywood has made the Brits 44

baddies for so long now that an undercover limey just has to be a traitor. And he has ginger hair. There is no doubt that this is a golden age for TV dramas; shows like The Sopranos, The Wire and Boardwalk Empire have production values that put many movies to shame and Homeland is no exception. The leads deserve their various gongs and the pace varies from thoughtful to frantic with plot twists that keep the viewer guessing. Homeland uses that Spielberg trick of introducing outrageous fantasy into domesticity (remember ET?)

to establish veracity and assist in the suspension of disbelief but why does Brodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife call him Brody? When Mrs Brody discovers his covert prayers, she snatches his Koran and throws it to the floor- interestingly, this was cut from the Thai TV version but shown in the US and Europe. Despite all the warning signs, she inexplicably backs his political rise to congressional representative and has no objections against his progress towards the White House. And just when you thought you had a handle on things, Brody is con-

fronted by the CIA and agrees to spy on al-Qeada- but will he? Homeland walks a tightrope of racial stereotypes where any Arab must be a villain and serves to reinforce the paranoia that ensures a US budget windfall to security forces even bigger than that of this extravagant series and ramps it up further with political corruption. Nearing the end of the second season now, the hope must be that there will not be a third as the denouement is predictable. There will be Homeland insecurity. At any cost.

BOND is BACK, BOND is Bi! By Brian Baxter

Well that’s a great exaggeration of course. True he’s back after four years and resurrected but as for the Bi-bit that stems from one of the best of many good scenes in the new Skyfall, offering not just the funniest line but also helping shift the franchise, which needed new direction in all senses, into the 21st century.

Skyfall is not just the best of the series in its 50 year history but the one that updates three crucial characters for the future in anticipation of further movies: a nerdy young Q, a feisty new Moneypenny and of course a change of sex for the crucial M. As for the Bi scene between the ultracamp, blonde Xavier Bardem (the latest demented villain in a long line of masterminds) this is all part of the ‘modernisation’ process. Bardem plays an ex- MI6 agent who has been given up by M, who receives six agents in return. He is incarcerated and tortured for five months by the Chinese who know about such matters. Bardem makes even the high camp Donald Pleasance and Charles Gray

look butch. He is certainly bent – on revenge. In the fun scene he has the hunky Daniel Craig at his mercy, handcuffed to a chair and as he starts to examine 007’s wounds and lovingly strokes his chest he tells his captive that he should experience everything at least once. Bond looks him straight in the eyes and says. ‘Who says it’s the first time?’ Craig delivers the line dead pan with fleeting ambiguity and one laughs at the response and at the fleeting notion of his predecessors - especially Connery or Roger Moore – archly delivering the same line. Later on the two guys are locked in a struggle. Allowing Bardem to say, ‘Let’s see who comes out on top’. As though we had any doubt! 49

I feel neglected/bored but what I really do not like is that he is really overdoing the muscle thing. It was sexy at first. Now he is becoming grotesque. Is this very Thai. If you are feeling bored and neglected, what is keeping you away from the gym yourself? It is quite possible that there is more to keep a boy distracted there than free weights and you might actually enjoy yourself more than parking your fat/ bony ass on a bar stool or in front of the TV. Dear Madame Darika, My father is 88. He broke a hip last year and now lives in an assisted living facility. My mother passed long ago. I call dad every other week or so and he seems happy with that. He is 15,000 km away, so there not much more I can do to make his life better. The problem is with my brother and sister. They live near where dad is staying and have children and jobs, so they do not spend a lot of time with dad because they are so “busy.“ Their kids do not bother to go at all, maybe because they are not in his will. Dad pays for his own care. I am being harangued with suggestions that I should drop everything and move back to take care of dear old dad. I have been here for more than ten years but they somehow think that it is my responsibility to do this because I am the youngest and (wink wink) “single.”

I get emails and instant messages from them at least once a week. I am tired of it but beginning to feel terribly guilty. He is my father, after all. I have also become haunted with the question “when I’m his age, who is going to take care of me?” I hope you can reflect upon my attitude creatively. Gentle Reader, This sounds oh so much like a chapter out of Darika’s life. I have an 87 year old mother who is no longer able to live at home. She has lost her short-term memory. I phone her frequently and she asks me the same questions repeatedly, which I take with good humour. I have two sisters. The youngest lives ten minutes away from mom and is legally responsible for mother’s health choices and financial affairs. She and her shiftless children do not spend much time visiting mother. My other sister: I suspect she is doing naughty things with mother’s money. She does not like others in the family asking questions about it. The two of us have reached the point of communicating with her through a lawyer.

Sadly, surviving the so-called golden years is a dilemma most “single” people have to face. Darling, we all have to make our own families, by choice if not by birth. Building a support network is as essential as having a youthful attitude. If you do not have close friends and enduring intimate relationships, you will be lonely in your not-so-golden years. You do not sound hopeless or helpless and help of any kind is always cheerfully available here for those who can afford it. As for moi, I have never thought of going back. I would not be caught dead at the same funeral as my youngest sister. I am not sure what I would do there anyway. Darika is not the least bit interested in playing Bingo in a home for the aged.

Apparently your father has not asked you to return to the nest, so you have nothing to feel guilty about. Good parents raise their children to grow up and have lives of their own. I suspect the pressure you are getting is siblings’ way of saying they have become bored of dealing with your father’s circumstances. Perhaps they do not want to invest any time in him and they feel it is your turn. Tell your siblings to bugger off. They have no right to interrupt your cozy life. 51

Hits the Holiday Funny Bone

Medicine is far from glamorous but it is frequently funny. Here are some stories experienced by me or colleagues.

My sister, a midwife at a local hospital, told me this story that she swears is true; remember new born babies are slippery. After delivering a baby, the doctor dropped it into a bowl. Fortunately, the baby wasn’t harmed. Then, he dropped it again, the baby was unharmed. And what was the doctor’s quick remark to the parents? “Sometimes we have to drop them twice to get them to cry.” A friend who was a GU consultant from north Wales told me that while passing through a frantic ENT clinic, he overheard this conversation: Surgeon (angrily): “For heavens sake, nurse, get me my auriscope.” Distracted young nurse: “Doctor, I don’t even know your star sign.” I once accompanied an American locum doctor on his surgical ward round at a south Wales hospital. He stopped at the 52

bed of an old man who had recently had bowel surgery. The doctor examined the abdomen and asked the patient, “Do you have gas, sir?” The patient looked puzzled before answering, “No doctor, we are all electric in our house.” A former radiologist from Northern Ireland tells that years ago, kitted up in lead apron and gloves, he was conducting a radiographic examination of a woman’s abdomen. Finding that her clothing was causing some opacity on the fluorescent screen, he remarked: “Would you pull down your knickers, please?” The patient did nothing so he repeated the request. He then heard her say: “I’m so sorry, doctor. I thought you were talking to the nurse.”

OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists.

Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Santuary Spa by A is an elegant place to be. A feature among many massage spas, which include Lomchoey Massage and The Prince’s Men’s Spa, is the relaxed atmosphere. If meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar. Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. The Rome Hotel also guarantees a warm Thai welcome. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest 78

and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. NAB Disco is a hotspot. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The Corner Bar is popular and very friendly. Get away to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex.
