the one winged body

Filmmaker, artist and photographer, Galen Garwood and writer Peter Weltner have forged a startlingly unusual creative collaboration that has resulted in a strikingly beautiful new book: The One Winged Body. James Barnes met Galen at his home in the north of Thailand. 8

9

Cumberland

10

Winged Hermes, winged Nike, the sun in his chariot, Love’s sudden flights to earth, even the phallos, stony hard, is winged, and temple marble, heavy as the mountains from which it’s quarried, soars. Art’s a trick. Click. A bolt of wind-blown cloth’s a wing he holds with hand and arm, like a bit of bird’s bone, weightless as that, his body skybound, eager to rise on no more than one wing. Cumberland’s five thousand miles from Greece. His hair’s grown-up shorn. Heaven’s unsettled, fields of dark cloud, but save for earth’s ring the sky’s all his world, his ass beneath the feathery cloth fine as any boy’s or man’s who would be borne up on air like a bird, stunned by the sun he’d fly to.

11

Galen and gay novelist Peter Weltner have been friends for 35 years- ever since Weltner purchased some Garwood original paintings. Their work on The One Winged Body is reminiscent of the partnership between Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin. Galen sends an image to Peter who is then inspired to write the words. This apparently disjointed method produces a surprisingly cohesive combination that is a modern gay classic of pictures and prose, described by Galen as, “A weaving of the creative spirit.” Galen Garwood is a softly spoken man. His work is a softly spoken symphony of heart stopping images. He was born in Georgia, USA and first visited Thailand as a student in 1969. His eyes glitter with an innate knowing and he is modest about a career that has seen worldwide exhibitions of his work and drawn countless accolades and awards. He moved to Thailand in 1998.

“It is an intimate book,” says Galen of this sumptuously bound, limited edition, volume that comes in a luxuriously crafted black silk box. His lover’s body inspired the work and the pictures were taken during a trip to Sicily and Crete, where, in a magical cave and posing for one of the shots, the model startled some unsuspecting German tourists with his proud erection!

“I was in my studio in Seattle. It was a warm evening. I had a glass of wine and was reading about the plight of the Asian elephant. Suddenly, I realised that I was in tears. It was an epiphany,” recalls Galen. A decision was made: “I’m going to help those elephants!” Within six months, he had sold up and moved close to the Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang.

The enigmatic title, ‘The One Winged Body’ serves as a mythological metaphor- being between heaven and earth.

12

Robert Gluck, poet and novelist wrote this about The One Winged Body: ‘Galen Garwood and Peter Weltner have made a Valentine to Beauty and Arousal with photographs and poetry that are beautiful and aroused. Words italicized by

arousal. Nakedness articulated by folds of cloth, a dialogue of flesh and flow that signals classical antiquity, but also the mystical inwardness of Mary’s mantel. If the body is a language, here it speaks, in itself, of happiness, fulfilment, lush utopia. Arousal is the wing that carries it upward. Not wisdom through suffering but awe. But desire ignited by beauty, desire that submits to beauty--that’s another story, a story that may involve destruction, obsession and loss. And memory: our culture’s visual memory, like the pictorialist photographs of Imogen Cunningham or the “ethnographic studies of young natives” by Baron von Gloeden, who also carried his camera to Sicily, and personal memory, like the Ronnie’s and Bob’s of

Weltner’s past. John Keats called beauty truth. Is it? Weltner and Garwood are not suspicious of beauty, belittled by it, made ironic by it. What do we do with beauty?--submit to it, aspire to it, be ennobled by it, be destroyed by it? All of these.’ Even though the book is hot off the press, Galen is already planning his next endeavour: “I’ve begun to explore a new project, using Thai men set in an erotic, historical/mythical context,” says Galen, “something available toward next winter or so.” You can be the proud owner of The One Winged Body by purchasing online: www.marrowstonepress.com

Not wisdom through suffering but awe, men ruined at the whim of gods they’re better than. Bad weather. Sicily’s more dark than light– unsettled, ashen skies over the coast. Hera’s temple’s ink black ruins on a field of sooty grass, weed, faded like charcoal. The scene’s grainy like a still from a surreal silent film or a daguerreotype. A storm’s coming. A boy stands torso bare, his sheet-like skirt billowing. The mask he wears shines faceless as a crescent moon, hides what his chest boldly exposes, a beauty to envy, disguised as a pose, defiant, daring tragedy to live again, rise, its wave-maddened horses, lascivious winds. 14

Rockface and Stream

16

He’s retreated to wilderness, jagged rockface, sparse trees, twig tangled dark pointillist leaves, a stream, a sunlit cliff on the other side–an obscure cool spot where a prophet might rest from heat. He wears his clothes like a holy man’s, waist cinched, shoulder draped, lifts an arm to grieve Twelve, I discovered hidden deep in a forest, in a rhododendron thicket on a honeysuckle sweetened slope below Hanging Rock, a cascade and a naked man bathing in its pounding waters. He’s turned his face away. There’s only his black hair to see, his back, the curve of butt and thigh. Flesh of his flesh, no words, no book to follow. What will become of me when he turns to look?

OUT iT Profile:

Jim Lumsden It would be hard to find a guy on the Thai gay scene that has been more influential or about whom more words have been written. It is true that many of those words have been negative and have spawned a certain reputation, which has fed the gossipmongers more than a few tasty morsels. OUT iT decided to investigate and met Jim Lumsden in the Bistro at the Ambiance Hotel in Pattaya’s Boyztown. The man we met was nothing like the character ground out by the rumour mills.

He is punctual for the meeting. Impeccably dressed, the smile is a warm welcome and a pot of tea is ordered. He keeps an eye on his mother who is sat outside, watching all the camp being played out in the Soi. Mrs Lumsden stays here for 3 months every year to escape the cruel winters back home and visit her son, for whom she glows with obvi18

ous pride and affection. Originally, from Falkirk, Scotland, Jim started work for: “A butch builder- I was the office girl!” he jokes. He left the firm and embarked on a five-year stint of hotel training. Now 52 years old, he first came to Thailand in 1985 and moved here full time in December 1987.

His manner is surprisingly shy and endearingly modest as he explains the genesis of Boyztown. “First I purchased the Gentleman’s Club which is still here and in ’88 opened BoyzBoyzBoyz.” The name came from a Sinnitta hit song. “We were friendly with the Pepsi sales lady, did a deal and together made the now famous Boyztown sign.” There were just 21 gay bars in Pattaya back then, amongst them the famous Cockpit. “The QE2 used to dock in Pattaya and all the air crews used to stay here too. We had great support from Louis Fassbind- the original Mr Pattaya- of the Royal Cliff and Bruno.”

“From the 2nd Road on was just a dirt track with rice fields and it was a 5-6 hour drive to Bangkok.” He recalls, wistfully, the memory like a fresh reminder of just how much things have changed. The scene has grown tenfold since then. Jim welcomes the expansion: “Boyztown is a magnet, the more bars and gay businesses there are, the bigger the attraction.” BoyzBoyzBoyz has doubled in size and the Ambiance, which started with only 14 rooms, now has 45. 19

Jim admits to being shy: “I panic when I walk into a room of new faces,” he says but that reticence evaporates when he dons a frock and his alter ego, Madame Jim is liberated and can be seen at the BBB’s show every Saturday night. There is no Dutch courage for Jim who has not had a drink in 15 years. “It used to be a problem,” he confides, “I used to wake up in different countries!” He has been with his Thai partner and bar manager, Kom, for an amazing 18 years. “We met when I was drunk, lived together for two and a half years and then I got sober- we didn’t recognise each other! We had to learn each other again.” 20

It seems that he is less interested in business these days but his energies are still invested in the philanthropic success that is Pattaya Gay Pride; the idea was Louis Fassbind’s but Jim picked up the ball after Louis’ untimely passing. Since it started in 2001, PGP has raised more than 30 million THB for charity. The main beneficiary is Dr Phillipe Seur’s Heart 2000 organisation. “PGP provides an average of 250k THB per month to Heart,” says Jim, “to support the Pattaya community suffering from HIV/AIDS and buying medication.”

“People are so generous that despite the global recession over the last couple of years, raising funds is not the greatest problem. It is managing the money that is hard but there are people who do that for us.” PGP starts in March with a Mardi Gras party. There are dinners, street parties, Mr & Miss Gay Pattaya pageants and even a football tournament for the boys. PGP’s year climaxes on World Aids Day, December 1st, every year. Jim Lumsden is anxious to ensure that those involved get proper credit: “We must mention Archie Dunlop, Dennis Dews-

nap, Ron Weston, James and Lazlo. They are all huge contributors to Pride.” The second pot of tea is finished. The interview is over. Jim is relieved about that. He can return to the shepherding of Ambiance staff. Mum is still on the terracehe will deliver her back to Scotland- “She doesn’t like travelling alone.” She offers advice on quitting smoking as we leave; something she has managed successfully. That success seems to run in the Lumsden family.

Sansuk’s Secrets of Success. Punya was born into a poor family in Samut Sakhon, a fishing village just outside Bangkok, the youngest of five, with four sisters and a brother. He was not academically minded and left school when he was twelve to join his father’s fishing boat as the cook’s helper. He might not have been bright academically but was, and still is, highly intelligent and he caught on quickly what his duties were

Within six months, Punya was cooking on his own for the crew while they were out to sea and buying provisions when they docked to sell what they had caught. He stayed on the boat while the others were on shore leave, saving his hard-earned wages. After six years he had enough to pay for a year’s course at catering college. He took extra English classes and worked part time in various hotels to supplement his income.. After completing the course, Punya went to work full time in a hotel in Phuket where he met Howard, a retired American stockbroker—believe it or not, the first inkling Punya had that he was gay. Howard explained to Punya he was not very rich and that most of his finances were tied up in trust for the two children of his ex22

lover who had died of aids. Punya was in love with Howard and money played no part in their relationship or Punya’s affections. They had ten happy years together, first living in Huston and then in San Diego, Howard had many friends in both places, all of whom fell for Punya’s charms. Howard would give Punya small amounts of money from time to time to buy things for himself, but Punya got Howard to help him invest in the Thai stock market. When Howard died, Punya had nursed him for the last two years of his life. While he was at Howard’s funeral the children of the ex lover locked Punya out of the house, putting his suitcase outside the door with a nasty note. After a month of grieving a heartbroken Pu-

nya decided there was nothing for him in America without Howards and he decided to come back to Thailand. His shares had done very well so he had just about enough money to look around for a business. He thought he could make a success of a gay guesthouse and Punya settled for Pattaya where, after many disappointments he found suitable premises in Soi VC South Pattaya. He spent a year renovating the existing building he bought and Howards Guesthouse and Bar was ready to open. It was an instant success, the right location, the right-priced rooms and drinks. The freelance guys at the bar were a great draw. While all the bars around were charging bar-fines to take boys out, Howards did not.

Customers used to ask Punya where the best gay sauna was in Pattaya, and at that time there wasn’t one he could recommend so his entrepreneurial instincts kicked in and he started looking around for something suitable. There was a guesthouse and sauna for sale in Jomtien, Le Colonial. It was a strange wooden complex, two of the larger suites had water features running though them with dozens of fish and were full of statues and antique furniture, as were all the other rooms and suites. It was a private house designed to house a collection of antiques and metamorphosed into a guesthouse with a sauna, small gym and swimming pool in the grounds. It was not very successful! 23

Punya thought he could renovate the property and turn into something more and he set to work with the team of builders he had used to help him with Howards. They all realized that Le Colonial needed much more work done on it than just renovations to make it viable, so the bulldozers moved in. Within two years, Sansuk Sauna and Guesthouse were open. Punya now glosses over what a traumatic time it was, and how he was rescued by his friendly bank manager. That was nearly five years ago and both Howards and Sansuk have gone from strength to strength, thanks mainly to one very humble but very smart young Thai Guy named Punya. He takes his busi24

nesses seriously, doesn’t smoke, drink, gamble or dabble in drugs. His affable, easy going personality and natural charm has made Punya a very successful and likeable young man. He has not forgotten his family and employs about fifteen of his relations. At nearly eighty, his energetic mother insists on working for him despite having a generous allowance. Currently Punya has his sights set on another venture; serviced apartments in the Jomtien area which he believes will also be successful. Knowing Punya as not one to stand still and rest on his laurels—they will be!

By Koonmo Everyone took them as friendly brothers, But, they were actually tender lovers. They functioned only when together. Adjunct, like soap demanding water. Enchanted by such a witching tale. Eager men fail to espy the rail. The envious mind becomes the jailer. Psychic gossamer knots the dreamer. Are we not selfish and full of creed? Only out to friskily sow our seed. We charm our way to receive our need. Can’t stop till we wither like dry weed. In partnership, we tie a tight knot. Stifled as such, we sure die and rot. “Follow your true nature, thou should not”: said the wise books - they don’t know a lot! Partner, lover,.... it is a free choice. The norm - No! - I cry with a loud voice. I implore you, Mother nature speak. Auguries are not enough - Men creak.

Scripts & yarns we eagerly believe. (But) You, from which we stitch our complex weave. You, the true source of our existence. We dourly deny your sapience. Certainty we desperately seek. Comfort zones seal us but we turn weak. No predicament in a good game. Dare the thin line, you may reach your aim. Hostile realm is your natural ground. Death threats lurk behind every mound. Seek & accept insecurity; As only thus shalt thou become free. Butterflies fly into the open; Tender at the mercy of chance omen. Savoring varieties at offer. Never caring what is the matter. In openness, opportunities knock . Sample the gifts with joy, never block. Experience passion but never dock; And you will never (ever) be under a lock.

Samui- Hands On

By Jason Sandford

Massage has been in existence for thousands of years as evidenced in archaeological finds in Egypt, Greece, India and China. Valued in Asia for its preventative health benefits, the West tends to see massage more as a remedial or leisure activity where the dominant view of health and healing has been a scientific, rational one. In the West, a healer, whether a doctor, herbalist or massage therapist is perceived to be carrying out their work on an uninformed, passive client. In Asia, doctors, healers, herbalists and masseurs believe they must work together with their clients, who possess a corresponding personal sense of the importance of good food, exercise and a well managed personal environment for ensuring good health. As practiced today and experienced by most international travelers to the Kingdom, Thai massage is the product of a 19th century synthesis of various healing traditions from China, India, Burma, Thailand and Japan, along with skin care and beauty techniques developed over thousands of years. The origins of gay massage in Thailand parallels the development of the Thai tourism and spa industries. Most often, gay massage in Thailand has subordinated the real value of massage for a quick buck by inventing the ‘happy ending’ scenario. However, with the decline of sex tourism, health 26

concerns, Thai social development, and a growing understanding of the therapeutic and health advantages of quality massage, the Thai gay sex massage industry is fast vanishing. Smart gay travelers know to separate the pleasure and benefits of good, naturally sensuous, massage and invigorating body treatments from the quest for a bit of ‘jolly’, easily found elsewhere, delivered by a different type of practitioner. After all, would a person go to their doctor for an annual checkup and expect a haircut and colouring?

It would be unfortunate if you did not indulge yourself in massage and body treatments while on Samui. There are excellent, professional gay only places, all considerably less expensive than hotel spas – and of course, they have gay Thai male masseurs - unlike the hotel spas.

Only for the boys Mon Montha Man Massage Lamai Beach Road, Lamai, recently opened, smart, single open plan massage room, provides a basic range of massage, facial and scrubs. Open daily 11 am to 12 midnight, shower, and air conditioning. Emerald Green Mens Club Chaweng Beach Road, north Chaweng, opposite the Nora Beach Resort, Samui’s premier, destination for high quality man 4 man, gay only, massage, swanky & clean, fresh herbal body treatments, scrubs, facials, manicure/pedicure, foot peel and more. Open daily, midday to 9 pm, air-conditioned, showers, lockers, double room for couples, private rooms, credit cards accepted. Emerald Green Mens Club @ X2 Resort Samui where they also provide

Tropical Fah Samui in Chaweng Plaza soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, under new management, offering a range of massage and skin treatments for boys, girls and transgendered customers. TRUE LOVE?

Part 5 – To love and to cherish,

After the accident at Loi Krathong, Paa spent a miserable three days. He had hoped the farang would come back and take him off again. He had hoped he could start to look after the man. But there had been no sign of him. Then, unexpectedly the man came back. Paa was delighted and rushed over to see him. He threw his arms around his neck and greeted him with a long kiss. In perfect English, our lad said “I will take care of you”. The man agreed to take him home. Paa went and changed into smart street clothes, rather than his working uniform. When they got back to the apartment, the man seemed to melt in his arms. After that they spent the night together. Content, Paa fell asleep holding his hero. Everything would be alright. He had fallen in love. In the morning, he got up and left the apartment. He didn’t want anything from the man and certainly didn’t want money. He was relieved when the man never offered him any. After all you don’t take money from your lover do you? Chris had a good three days after that. His stomach problem cured itself and after the problem with the boy, returned to normal. One evening, while walking past the bar, the boy with whom he had had the problem, rushed out to see him. The 28

boy uttered in terrible English “I take care you” and kissed him full on the lips. The Englishman found this public kiss, sexy and agreed to take the boy off. The boy changed out of his prostitute’s uniform and into scruffy street clothes. “Maybe I can have some fun here after all,” he thought. He reckoned as the boy had approached him, he wouldn’t offer to pay him and see what happened. They had reasonable sex and settled down for the night. The boy didn’t object when Chris didn’t offer to pay, and so he reckoned he had done alright. Plus, by not paying him, he wouldn’t be keen to come back again. Would he? Paa had fallen head-over heels in love with his farang and nothing could change that. The night after the good sex, the man came past again and sat down with the boy for a drink. He kept saying things that baffled the Thai boy, who just wanted to kiss his hero. They locked lips and spent a long time together. Over the next three months, Paa would spend a lot of time with the man; working in his apartment, helping him with the housework, and keeping him company at night. The man was obviously poor, as he couldn’t afford to keep his air conditioning on. Paa would usually take his

shirt off to stay cool. The man didn’t mind if he took his jeans off, and Paa didn’t usually wear underwear. He never asked him for a single Satang, and the man didn’t offer. Obviously the love was working between them. He had found his champion alright. Chris had enjoyed his night with the boy. He knew the lad was willing and seemed to be up for anything. If he was lucky, he could convince the boy to have sex for a very small fee. After all, money was tight for him. He went back to the bar and had a long chat with the boy about doing some housework for him. Chris had always fancied watching a naked boy doing his ironing. So when the two of them got back, he deliberately didn’t put on the air conditioning. He watched as his new worker sweated and suggested he took off his shirt. Then the jeans came off. The lad must have caught on to the game as he must have previously taken off his underwear and he stood there naked doing the chores. Chris enjoyed this to the full. The boy never asked for a penny. He knew he was being softened up and that a demand would come soon. The normal excuse was a close relative to die (it was amazing how many grandparents these Thai boys had). But he had a hard heart and was ready for the tricks the boy would pull. Don’t miss the final instalment next month 29

OUT on TV EXCLUSIVE Got To Dance - Gays in Sync?

OUT on tv

There is already a US version of the franchise, Live To Dance, on which the main attraction is pontificating Paula Abdul, fresh from a long stint of judging American Idol- the show she left- she was not fired (translation: she asked for too much money to renew her contract). What goes around, goes around in the incestuous world of TV talent shows. 30

Hosted by Davina McCall, Got To Dance (Star World: True Vision ch.54), is yet another reality/talent show. It has all the formulaic components you expect. Thousands of hopeful hoofers, auditions (great and grisly) are in front of the cameras, a whooping studio audience who seem to had the benefit of happy pills and a panel of pundit judges who condemn or commend. In this case they are Ashley Banjo, founder of dance troupe Diversity who won ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ back in 2009; comely Kimberley Wyatt, former member of the American pop and dance combo, the Pussycat Dolls and terrific tap dancer Adam Garcia.

The first season of Got To Dance produced a delightfully diminutive champion in the shape of 10 year old Akai, who won 100K GBP for his marvelous moves. This second season has upped the ante to 250k. Hoping to scoop the pot, Guyz in Sync, who describe themselves as the world’s leading all-male Latin and Ballroom formation dance team. Guyz in

Sync are a dozen dancers aged 27 to 50 from various professional backgrounds who first came together to win gold at the LGBT World Outgames 2009 in Copenhagen. Stuart Barrett, of Guyz in Sync told OUT in Thailand: “We made history, it was the first time same-sex dancing had ever been shown on TV.” What in merrye olde England? It’s true, “We had the audience up on their feet dancing and cheering us on. We hope we will inspire people to take up samesex dancing across the globe,” The gloriously named Hadass Armon, co-director of Studio LaDanza, London and coach of Guyz in Sync, said: “I have worked with same-sex dancers for many years. This is an amazing opportunity to bring the beauty and power of same-sex dancing to a wider audience. I am so proud that the team has come this far.” The chances of Guyz In Sync winning are small but you can follow their progress on June 1st, 8th and 22nd.

ESSENTIAL DIRECTORS

by Brian Baxter

OUT at the movies In our lists of 101 ‘essential gay films’ many titles were missing, some quite deliberately since they were made by directors who have made between them so many gay films and gay-related ones that they would have swamped the articles. So here are more than a couple of dozen names all of which deserve special mention and further research. By no means are all of them gay in their personal lives, although some, such as Pasolini, Jarman, Fassbinder at al, were famously so. Others have simply made films with gay characters and there could be dozens more examples. That most macho of filmmakers, John Huston, in his debut The Maltese Falcon has memorable gay character for example. Others such as Lubin did not make any ‘gay’ films but he, like Goulding, deserves inclusion here along with the most famous Hollywood gay director George Cukor. Straight directors can make gay movies and we can turn to Tennessee Williams for a simple explanation of that; “What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but a human heart, oh no. It’s curved like a road through the moun32

tains”. That wonderful quote comes from A Streetcar Named Desire and says it all really. Those who believe in strict or narrow compartmentalisation of the sexes simply don’t know of what they speak. Similarly gays have contributed to ‘straight’ movies and if they had not done so there would be few cinema industries anywhere in the world. Just as there would be no health services if all the gay or lesbian nurses and doctors and surgeons laid down their tools. Moreover, should all the hairdressers and waiters who are gay abandon their trades we would soon be traipsing the streets with unkempt hair in desperate search of an open restaurant. So gay or not these directors have contributed immeasurably to our pleasure. The list is alphabetical and the one film title given after the name and country is simply a representative work, not necessarily the best or most ‘gay’. You’ll notice one maker of short films (Anger) listed, simply because as a director, writer, actor and gad fly he cannot be left out from such company.

Ask Darika

Dear Chanin, Darika understands that these problems are causing you much difficulty and unhappiness, and I thank you for trusting me with them.

Pa Darika, Me and my boyfriend are Thai people. We are together for six years. I love him very a lot. However, we did not have any sex for three years. We go to (a bath house) together every week and we both have fun with another. I like this but it is not like love. Last weekend we had a big fight and I was very drunk and I said I want him to explain about this. He began to cry. He said he had a blood test three years ago he has the HIV. He does not want anyone to know. Especially me or his family. I think he is pretending to be OK. He should take some medicine for his health. Please tell me what to do. I am very crazy about this. Love, Chanin 34

There are several things you need to do as soon as you can. First, you must convince your BF that he needs to begin treatment. HIV is a manageable disease now and those who are infected can live long, happy, productive lives. The Red Cross and several local NGOs can help. In many cases, the medicine can be free or very low cost. If your friend continues down this path, he will probably die a horrible death that cannot be hidden from his family. Second, you need to be tested yourself. You can do this free without giving your name at Bangkok Christian Hospital on Silom Road. You have had multiple sex partners in a place where others have been exposed to HIV so you have been at great risk. If you are positive, you need to begin taking medicine as well. If you are not positive, you need to be tested every six months.

Finally, if you cannot both stop going to your favorite sauna, you must at least make 100% sure that you have safe sex every time. Use a condom and waterbased lubricant every time. Even after you begin treatment you can still infect others, and you will still be at risk for other nasty sexually-transmitted diseases. It sounds silly, but you should avoid sex with people who do not look healthy. Your boyfriend is not the first I know of who has tested positive, remained sexually active with multiple partners, but did

nothing about treatment until it was too late. Now that you understand your boyfriend’s desire to protect you from his infection, you must be loving and supportive. You might get to make up with each other for the past three years. And if you cannot afford condoms, let me know and I will make sure you get some free. My love and best wishes to you,

No Whines About Red Wine

By Doc John

OUT at the doc’s Firsts the good news; people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol, including red wine, which contains a heart-friendly substance called “resveratrol”, seem to have a lower risk of heart disease. Scientists don’t know if red wine is more heart beneficial than beer or spirits.

-H elp prevent artery damage caused by high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol. Other foods that contain some resveratrol include peanuts, blueberries and cranberries. Now the bad news: alcohol, including red wine, can be addictive and can cause or worsen other serious health problems. Drinking too much increases your risk of high blood pressure, high triglycerides, liver damage, obesity, certain types of cancer, accidents and other problems. Regular alcohol drinking will weaken heart muscle causing symptoms of heart failure. If you have heart failure you should avoid alcohol completely. And if you take aspirin daily, you should steer clear of or limit alcohol, depending on your doctor’s advice.

Some studies have shown that reasonable amounts of alcohol benefit the heart. It’s thought that alcohol will: - Increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol - Reduce the formation of blood clots 36

Drink red wine in moderation, which is defined as an average of two drinks a day for men. A “drink” is defined as 355 millilitres (ml) – two small bottles of beer, 148 ml or two small glasses of wine, or 44 ml of 80-proof distilled spirits. Stick to the scientists’ advice and you will live an extended alcohol-drinking life. Just what the doctor ordered.

OUT in Bangkok B

Bangkok is the frenzied hub of Thailand. The Skytrain and MRT (subway) have made it much easier to get around, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

Recommended Attractions: • Jim Thompson’s Houses • National Museum/Wang Na Palace with its excellent exhibits for a slice of Thai history • Wat Arun for breathtaking views of Bangkok and Chayo Phraya River • Grand Palace/Wat Phra Kaew with its amazing Emerald Buddha, colourful mosaics and glittering spires • Wat Pho, Bangkok’s oldest temple and home of the Reclining Buddha • Wat Traimitr (Golden Buddha) Chatuchak Park Weekend Market, the most famous of Bangkok’s markets, where you can buy almost anything at amazing prices if you bargain Lumpini Park to relax and take a break from the chaos of Bangkok and to view the weightlifters in the early morning

38

The Bangkok Gay Scene Bangkok has a plethora of gay venues unrivalled in Asia. Most Foreigners go to Suriwongse, Silom and along Sathorn Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station,

Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize. Disco Disco is another party palace. Between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage salons. Soi Duangthawee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located. Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais,

expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money!

OUT in Chiang Mai C

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations- a feature that attracts Thais and foreign tourists, especially for the February Flower Festival, Songkran in April, Loy Krathong in November and New Year revellers. Great retail therapy is available at Central Airport Plaza and the walking street market on the Rachamadoen Road, every Sunday.

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 50

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and per-

sonal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and yellow-metered taxis.

OUT in Phuket P

Phuket is the quintessential tropical resort vacation, complete with exotic nightlife. There are international flights directly to the island, or fly easily and affordably from Bangkok or Pattaya Utapao. VIP buses are available between Phuket and Bangkok. There are virtually no metered taxis on the island so book ground transportation from the airport with you hotel. From Phuket airport to Patong in a private car direct to your hotel is 600 THB. You can find a shared minivan for less. Motorcycle rentals are inexpensive. In the daytime there are affordable busses. Most Tuk Tuks have a 200-baht minimum rate and motorcycle taxis start at 40 baht. Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds. Parasail, snorkel, play golf, ride an elephant, canoe in hidden caves, sightsee, take a Thai cooking school course, dance the night away, or just spend lazy days on the beach. Phuket is such a popular international tourist destination for people from all lifestyles; they are not necessarily all gay friendly, so use a gay tour company at your accommodation or use the OUT guide. Phuket Fantasea is a vast outdoor theatre with a huge cast. Voted “best attraction” for several years running by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the ticket price (up 60

to 2,250 including transportation and VIP seating) also includes a buffet dinner, cultural parade and street show. No visit to Thailand would be complete without a visit to a ladyboy show and in Phuket, Simon Cabaret, is recommended. One of the best views available from anywhere on Phuket is Promthep Cape near Nai Harn beach near Rawai beach, with a nearby restaurant for romantic sunsets. Elsewhere, the Big Buddha overlooks Chalong Bay, and is over 25 meters wide and 45 meters high, adorned with 135 tons of white jade marble.

Your Voice Will Be Heard! It is clear that you are a discerning gay man- you are reading OUT iT! Your voice is important, your views are respected and we are sure that you want to let the gay businesses in Thailand know exactly what you think about the scene here. So, we are proud and excited to launch the first Annual OUT in Thailand Awards. It is the first time any national gay awards have been made in Thailand and you are the ideal guy to decide the recipients. The best bars, restaurants, massage spas and hotels in each of the five locations covered by our guides will be presented with our prestigious trophies. All the winners will be announced in the first birthday issue of OUT iT in January, 2012. And the winners will all be decided by your votes. You have ten votes every month from now until December 10th and you can choose your favourites in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Pattaya and Phuket- every business listed in our guide section will be eager to get your seal of approval. All you have to do to be heard is log on to www.out-in-thailand.com click on ‘Awards’ and register your votes. It couldn’t be easier! Your winners will influence the development of the gay future here in the Land of Smiles and we are frothing with the anticipation of who you will select to be the best. You can start voting NOW! And don’t forget, you have ten votes every month. Just go to the OUT iT website and your voice will be heard.

Phuket has great shopping, especially in Patong. Sharpen your bartering skills with street vendors or check out the higher end offerings at the very modern Jungceylon Mall with its spectacular outdoor dancing water shows. Only a 20baht bus ride (daytimes only) away is another modern shopping mall in Phuket Town, Central Festival. Phuket Town is very quaint and filled with restaurants, galleries, and more. It feels very unlike Thailand but more like a quaint little “Western” town. The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is on Patong Beach in the Paradise Complex, at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel. A mix of gay and straight hotels and guesthouses, gay saunas, bars, cabarets, massage parlours, and guy shows, the Paradise Complex is a great place to hang out at night. If you book a room within the Paradise Complex, ask in advance about noise levels—most can offer you a room that is not on a main Soi. Paradise Complex has two types of cabaret shows: “Go Go clubs” and Discos. Much effort goes into the shows, so patrons bounce from one to the next. The oldest Go Go show bars are My Way and Tangmo clubs with other cabaret variations at Mamasan’s.

Go Go bars Dempseys, Boys & Boys and James Dean Bar are notable. The popular outdoor upscale “Beer Bars” as always packed. The most popular are Connect, Sundowner, James Dean & Friends. Chic, a stylish place converted to an openair lounge (where BB Boys used to be) across from the lovely Orchid Lounge, draped with Orchids, offers coffee, and snacks. For late night entertainment, try Kiss Club and Boat Bar. Both are Discos and have lively outdoor patios and free cabaret shows. Boat Bar is as friendly as they come, the owner is the host with the most, and the shows are incredibly moving, energetic and inspiring. The Backstage and Knud’s are recommended and superior accommodation can be found at the beautifully refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse and Restaurant. The Gay Day Tour is great fun, every Saturday. Revellers convene at 11:00 a.m. at the Connect Guest House in the Paradise Complex and then go by minivan and then speedboat to a Koh Yao Yai private beach, equipped with private fresh water shower and toilet. The price, 1,850 THB includes, beach chairs and umbrellas, plenty of food and an open bar.

OUT in Koh Samui W

With jungle covered craggy hills, lush coconut plantations, and quiet beaches, balmy evenings Koh Samui is the perfect place to kick back, recharge and of course party a little. Samui is Thailand’s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. For gay men the Emerald Green Mens Club in north Chaweng is the premier gay only destination for high quality, man 4 man massage and body treatments, they also provide their services in the spa at the super chic X2 Resort Samui, south of Lamai. The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. Taxis are notoriously expensive but songtaew pick-up trucks are a cheap de facto public bus service. If you want a tour around Samui or go diving with 72

a gay guide, contact Rainbow Scuba & Tour. There is plenty of eye candy on the many idyllic beaches around the island. When you feel hungry there is a huge variety of places to eat, from top of the bill restaurants to cheap eateries and Thai market stalls. Check out eating options in OUT iT Magazine or on the website at the end of this article or cruise the Internet; your hotel will have a copy of the Samui dining guide. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses

hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has a Cabaret obsession with three clubs featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret above the entrance to Khun Chaweng Resort pumps out a classy, fast paced show while just past the north end Starbucks is Christy’s the first cabaret bar on Samui, still going strong. Over the hill in Lamai Beach beside Fusion Club is Zodiac Cabaret and Tina, a ladyboy icon on Samui. All shows are daily, kick in about 8.30 pm with bar service and free entry. A short distance along from Zodiac and opposite Holiday Park Resort is Boys Bar Samui with pole dancing and take away staff, daily from 5 pm. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Chaweng is a late hour party town. From midnight Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, mixed crowds, no frills bar service, daily until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro is Mekkala Men Spa an intimate massage business run by long established Samui resident, Khun AJ. A short distance further on

in Mae Nam is gK Men’s spa close to Bandara Resort for a range of massage styles and treatments. Pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at any gay venue for an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings. There are no gay hotels on Samui. There are a wide range of accommodation options from famous brand name hotels through to exclusive private villas or simple, Samui style bungalows and good quality, gay only, owner occupied B&Bsomething for all needs. Check out the options on the website below or search the Internet. Websites for all the gay businesses in this guide and more detailed information on gay accommodation, bars, restaurants, massage, things to do, what to be aware of @ www.gaykohsamui.net & www. gaykohsamui.com 73

OUT in Pattaya P

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets, from local street stalls, to five star gourmet haut cuisine. Water sports include diving, jet skiing and parasailing. Try Go-karting or bungee jumping or a massage at one of the many salons. There are many gyms and exercise facilities.

Just some sample highlights around Pattaya; • P attaya Elephant Village has guided tours through the jungle on elephant back, ox cart, rafting, and much more. • Nong Nooch Tropical Garden has beautiful landscaped gardens and amazing panoramas. Don’t miss the French Garden and Orchid display. Also daily cultural and elephant shows as well as a charming zoo at this “Chelsea Flower Show” winning Garden. • Tiffany’s and Alcazar Ladyboy cabaret shows, both on second road, are a feast of glamour and glitz. Tiffany’s in particular is energetic and tours the world with its spectacular show. • The crystal clear waters of Koh Larn, are 45 minutes by ferry. This island, 78

the nearest to Pattaya of many, offers relaxation in the most tropical of styles. Gay Pattaya In the day time, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach is a short ride from Pattaya. Here you can relax in deckchairs or on loungers, and be waited on all day. It is, however, in the evening when the city comes truly alive. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. The Copa Showbar has an exciting, twice nightly, cabaret show and a unique erotic underwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has

recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”. The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightly, and is not to be missed. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know. The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex. Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of

the many beer bars particularly notable are Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above. Finally, for the true Night Owls, Pattaya offers a selection of world class late night discos. Dave Man Club and Nab are just two terrific venues where you can dance the night away, surrounded by super sexy Coyote dancers, until the wee small hours of the morning.
