Cover Story
Tob Chaiwat Thongsaan
An actor’s life... Multi Talented Tob is a Thai national pin-up, sexy model, star of screens big and small; he is the face of Adam’s Love, a brand new Thai Red Cross hiv/aids initiative for men who love men. In a WORLD EXCLUSIVE interview, he spoke to James Barnes about his life and career. 10
At just 22 years old, Tob has achieved more than most aspiring actors. His good looks and smouldering eyes, casual style and sheer screen presence have propelled him to the top of his profession. His groundbreaking role in Bangkok Love Story brought him international acclaim but he remains mild mannered and modest in classic Thai style. “I was born in Bangkok,” he says, “but I live with my family in Pathum Thani Province, just north of the capital.” A student at Ramkhamhaeng University. Bangkok, Communication Arts, he started his career in 2006, sponsored by elders. “I did not study acting formally,” he confides with a smile that melts the heart, “but I was very fortunate to have good people who gave good advice and feedback on my performance.”
11
Tob was a quick learner. “I used to speak too quickly and I really had to practice, speaking slowly.” He admits that it was not easy but he has a natural instinct for his work, welcomes positive and negative critiques to show how he can improve his craft and has one overwhelming priority: “I have to enjoy what I do.” Tob’s first job in 2006 was for Honda’s 40th Anniversary advertising campaign with Thailand’s singing superstar, flamboyant bachelor, Bird Thongchai. Since that huge success, Tob has been a model, television presenter and movie star. “I enjoy it all,” he enthuses, “I always intend the final product to be my very best and favour no media over another.”
12
Bangkok Love Story was a momentous milestone for Tob and Thai cinema (see Brian Baxter’s review in this month’s OUT at the Movies). Directed by Poj Arnon, it was Tob’s first big screen role which garnered worldwide recognition. “It showed the love between men who are good-looking, wealthy people, about to marry.” Tob says that the famous love scene between him and his male co-star was not easy. “It was very difficult with many takes. We have never had the love between men before and needed to show the emotion and spontaneity. The director suggested that I think we’re going to love the fans and finally we did it.” The movie was beautifully filmed in many locations and the music was wonderful. “Many gay people put this music on their ‘phones and it became a gay anthem,” says Tob, proudly. “Bangkok Love Story took all my commitment and dedication in performing it. It is a meaningful movie that demonstrates that love can happen with all the heart, regardless of gender.” Queer eagle eyes will have spotted that Tob has developed a more muscular physique since his Bangkok Love Story screen debut. “Health care is really important to me,” he smiles, “and I take good care of myself. I eat plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables, no fried food and spend 2-3 hours a day in the gym. It is a wizard that makes you pretty!” He also admits to a strict skin care routine and recommends finding the right products for your skin type: “I buy online!” Tob can be seen on Thai TV as host of ‘Erotic Love’ on channel 32, Grand 32 PSI Satellite, every Monday - Friday at 22.30 - 24.00. “It is a TV magazine show of all sex-oriented entertainment.
It’s very creative,” says Tob. He is also making a new film, reuniting with Bangkok Love Story director, Poj Arnon- a sequel to outrageous gay comedy Plon Na Ya (Spicy Beauty Queen in Bangkok), which will be on general release early in 2012. OUT in Pictures Living through the lens By Ian Robert Knight
My love for photography started in the darkroom! I learned how to print photos by hand when I was a teenager, long before I ever owned a camera. I loved seeing how I could breathe life into images through simple science and craftwork. This early passion changed the way I see things, and unknowingly set a pathway for my life’s work. When I eventually ran out of things to print, I made the game-changing decision to buy a camera to shoot some film. Taking photographs was, at the beginning, a means to an end. I needed negatives to print, and shooting my own photographs filled that need quickly. Over time, I learned how to expose the film in order to yield higher quality prints. This somewhat rudimentary, hands-on technical approach helped me to understand how light and shadow works. It allowed me to see photographs in their final form before I shot them. Few photographers have this insight, and I think it has helped me see things differently.
14
When I was first starting out, I photographed pretty much everything in sight. I have shot more than a million photographs over three decades. Eventually, I honed my own style and gained an artist’s eye towards my subjects, and my style evolved over time. I honed my craft over the years, until it became instinctive. I worked with and assisted several hardworking photographers, and learned to appreciate the blending of science and art. I learned to be both technical and creative, and I learned when to lean more in one direction or the other. I am originally from Vancouver Canada, but I have been living in Asia for 3 years. I call Bangkok home now, but I have also lived in Hong Kong and Beijing. At 47, I have managed to set foot in 60 countries around the globe, and I am always looking for new places to visit. Thailand has always called me back, and I find endless opportunities to photograph the land and its people. When I was at the beginning of my career, I spent 4 years working as a ship’s photographer on a dozen cruise ships. It gave me the necessary discipline I needed to produce a high volume of work, and it also allowed me to see parts of the world I would not have otherwise seen. It planted the travel bug deep within my soul, and I’ve been feeding it ever since. 15
I taught photography, most recently at the Beijing Center of Photography. I found that I was particularly adept at explaining some of the most technical concepts in the simplest terms. I enjoyed showing people how easy and fun photography was. Shooting with digital cameras has made photography accessible to everyone, and the interest level has never been higher. I also led tours to some of the most amazing parts of the country with emerging professionals. Seeing areas of China that are breathtakingly beautiful, along with other photography enthusiasts, was a tremendous opportunity. Landing in Thailand for the first time 8 years ago was an eye-opening experience. Never before had I felt so foreign, yet so welcome at the same time. Visiting so many other countries didn’t really prepare me for what I encountered. All at once, all my senses were being bombarded with amazing scents, sounds, tastes, feelings and above all, sights. I knew instinctively that Thailand would play a significant role in my life. I kept returning every year, sometimes several times. Now, I call it home. One of the things about Thailand that struck me visually was the high percentage of handsome men. I was already aware of how some Asian men could possess stunning good looks, but I wasn’t prepared for how many I would see. The other surprise about Thai men was how much they appreciated and sought out the chance to be photographed. Most other Asian races are quite shy about posing for the camera, particularly in little or no clothing. But Thai men didn’t seem to have those hang-ups.
Photographing men was not something that I originally set out to do. But over time, I found that I had an affinity for capturing the male form. My photographs are both technical and soulful. Men that posed for me ended up with a portfolio that showcased their physical and emotional beauty. The majority of men that I photographed were amateur models, and only a handful had professional experience. Yet each of them carried themselves with pride, confidence and grace about their beauty and sensuality. Thai men have a special charm that comes through in the photographs. It’s a combination of nature and nurture. Thai men are continuously shown other Thais in local media that have handsome looks and confidence, and they are encouraged to reach up to the same level. Confidence is a national trait, and most Thai men have more than average.
17
18
When I was living in China, it was very different story. There was no shortage of handsome men in China (after all, there are 700 million men there). But finding men with both good looks and confidence was more of a challenge. The culture in China is considerably different, in that it is considered poor taste to be photographed with little or no clothing. Certainly, publishing such photographs is wrong, and in some cases illegal. Most of the men I convinced to let me photograph them would only do so on condition of changing their name or going unpublished. It was rare to find a Chinese man that was willing to be photographed nude, and allow others to see it. Typically, any such man was either not a Chinese national, or he was educated outside of China.
I’ve been fortunate to visit most of the countries around Asia, and photographed men in all of them. I’ve been particularly happy with the work I’ve done in SE Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. I have amassed photographs of more than 100 men from countries all over Asia, and will be putting much of them into a book in the near future. My short term and long term goals are both the same: continue to find and photograph handsome men throughout Thailand and SE Asia. My work is constantly evolving, as my creative and technical skills grow.
19
Top Tips for photographing men: Pay attention to the background. Although it’s not your primary subject, people will see it just as much. Look for simple, uncluttered backgrounds that don’t distract from the subject. Avoid having limbs aimed towards the camera - they will look much larger than they are. Allow your model to relax and feel comfortable, by photographing them in environments that they are familiar with, like their own homes. When choosing clothing, select items that are solid colours without patterns or visible brand names, so as not to distract from your model. For short men, photograph them at a slightly lower height than they are. For tall men, photograph them from a higher height.

Chiang Mai Glitters with Sequins and Dance
By James Barnes
The Playhouse in Chiang Mai is a truly impressive venue. Sophisticated bars and a sweeping staircase, replete with lush red carpet, lead to a gorgeous auditorium for a stunner called ‘Sequins and Dance’- more than an hour of song and dance in the good old Broadway tradition that really does ‘razzle-dazzle’, with numbers that range from Gene Kelly’s evergreen ‘Singin’ in the rain’ to Michael Jackson’s emotive, powerful ‘Earth Song’. It is breathtaking stuff that
sometimes tugs the heartstrings but most times tickles the grin glands. ‘Sequins and Dance’ is a nonstop rollercoaster of entertainment with world-class choreography that ranges through classical ballet and Thai, tap, hip-hop and contemporary styles. The cast comprises the energetic enthusiasm of 37 young Thais and you will leave the theatre with a face that aches with smiling at their exuberant and uplifting professionalism.
21
Among this glittering galaxy of talent is a star that outshines all others. Thanapoon Sinprathanaporn (Mai) is a young man who has a fabulous f ture ahead of him. His homage to the famous stage and movie icon, Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson is a show stopper. Mai’s lines and poise are an eye-popping demonstration of dance that is a master class. Another notable totally deaf but with other cast members counting him in, he keeps time by the miraculous metronome in his head and his dance dazzles. The whole show is choreographed by award winning Ramon Viztamos. A classically trained dancer, with choreographic achievements in his home country, the Philippines, Ramon took his talents to Japan and now raises the bar here in Thailand. His experience in international shows such as Cats, Lion King, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera shines throughout ‘Sequins and Dance’. “I am so excited to be part of this show and the work of the Playhouse Academy will allow us to introduce new quality and trained talent into theatres here in Thailand,” enthuses Ramon. 22
Ekkachai Nunjinda, is the talented producer who drives the company forward with his zest and dynamic creativity. He is a highly respected figure within Thailand’s entertainment circles. Renowned for his ability to motivate people, he is leading the initiative to promote training for stage performers, developing their skills in voice, dance, costume and set creation as well as building the framework of the Playhouse Performing Arts Academy. “Our present cast are well trained but we shall take them on to even higher ground, involving them in the PPAA, benefitting them and future stage performers throughout the country,” says Ekkachai. This has been underlined by an arm of the academy launched in Thailand’s second biggest city, Khon Kaen.
This is an essential part of the Playhouse vision. A Playhouse spokesman said, “We can’t boast about Chiang Mai culture if we do not nurture it,” he adds; “There is so much fresh, new talent from the universities in and around the city but we have to make sure that they do not move away and the PPAA is our way to prevent this. We are firmly focussed on the future; if we keep the talent here, people will keep coming here.” New talent is given the chance to shine on individual performance stages within the Playhouse complex, which includes sophisticated bars and the Kinnaree Park Restaurant.
The Kinnaree Park is an entertainment in itself. Saturday night theatregoers can savour a pre show dinner of delicious northern Thai cuisine in stunning surroundings that include rock faces with waterfalls. Classical Thai dancers perform throughout the buffet meal; all dressed in exquisite traditional Thai costumes of white and gold- the livery of the restaurant. With 50 covers, the Kinnaree Park Restaurant is also available for private functions. 23
If you love Jazz, The Playhouse Complex is the place to be, every Sunday night: Jazzamatazz sees electric live performances that are simultaneously broadcast on radio and are a toe-tapping extravagance of music to be enjoyed while you are served cocktails or a beer by smart, attentive staff. With an academy for performing arts, bars, restaurant, jazz nights, and a spectacular show The Playhouse is a landmark soon to be even more boldly defined by an association with the Russian Ballet and a planned Christmas production of ‘The Nutcracker.’

The B in LGBT
In his career, he had often visited Chiang Mai and decided to retire there. He lives modestly in an out-of-the-way condo-hotel. These days he has a Thai boyfriend, if you will pardon the expression applied to a 35 year-old. At is a village man who is known and accepted for his ambiguous sexual orientation. He is a barber/hairdresser, but also a spirit medium who adheres to strict protocols of diet and everything else. Art and At love each other. They live separately all but one night and day a week. Art visits At in the village occasionally and that’s OK, but when At comes into town they don’t go anywhere. Art spends his life as a painter, and he’s successful at it. When At comes to a gallery showing, he can be friendly to Art, but not too friendly. Art doesn’t want his circle of friends to know about At and the “dark side” of his life. They couldn’t accept it, Art says. So he leads a double life, and he’s successful at it. 28
By Kenneth Dobson
Art is my friend (I have changed his name and details to respect his anonymity). He lives successfully in Chiang Mai although he lived more lavishly back home where his international manufacturing business brought him comfort and social standing. He was married a long time to a woman who was his peer and they were steadfastly, satisfactorily monogamous. Then he had a male lover. Again, they were faithful to each other and enjoyed their sex and life in general. That was followed by another 15-year marriage to a lovely, loving woman. When she died, Art was grief-stricken.
Some of our gay writers sneer that a bi-sexual is really just a closeted gay person. However, Art disproves that. Art is a closeted bi-sexual. That is, he is closeted to all except a gay few. But why? We who are farther over toward a “Kinsey 6” know that our sexual orientation is not a matter of choice. At all! “Who’d choose to be queer?” we used to rant before we settled down to like our life. But isn’t one’s sexual life a matter of choice for a bi? They can go either way. We need to be careful here, and caring. A bi-sexual did not choose his or her sexual orientation anymore than we did. Art feels as trapped in his bi-sexuality as I first did being gay. So maybe it is only in his sexual expression that Art has a wider range of choices? Careful, again! Art feels his range of choices is narrow, because he has to hide and be so discreet.
No, being bi-sexual is a separate category of sexual diversity. There are a separate range of concerns and fears that adhere to it. We need to respect the bi-sexuals in our LGBT communities and coalitions. They need to be understood better than they are. We need some of them to “come out” and dare to tell us what it’s like to be bi in a society that brands them as promiscuous and lewd. And we need to listen. But why isn’t it all right to be bi? Why does Art hide all the time? He’s nearly 90 now. He’s been hiding a long time. He hid his homosexual side when he was living as a heterosexual, because society couldn’t accept it, and it wasn’t necessary to be public about something so private and irrelevant to his social life. He had to suppress his heterosexual side when
living as a homosexual, because society doesn’t understand…a whole life hiding. Why hide? Because society is not accepting of bi-sexuality. That’s why. Art is a man of commitment. He has lived as a serially monogamous man. Had he decided to live as a polygamous bi-sexual would his stress have been less? Well, polygamy has its stresses, too. They are just different stresses. Our bi-sexual friends are who they are. That is the point I am trying to make. But they’re misunderstood, even by themselves, sometimes. And, hey, gay guys, the bi-sexuals outnumber us by a wide margin. Let’s give them some respect. Art, and all the rest of you, you’re OK the way you are! But tell us about it. Let us know you and love you better. 29
Part 4; Tragic News By Dodger
On July 5th, my boyfriend Thep and two of his friends were arrested for yaba possession just two hours before the start of the Isaan concert. The police knocked on the door of his friend, Pawn’s, room, found 82 yaba tabs and no one admitted to having purchased it. The court sentenced Thep and his friends to 2-1/2 years in prison. Thep had passed a pee test when arrested but his two friends had failed. Court records showed that none of the three would confess to owning the drugs, so all were penalized equally. I later learned who owned the yaba and it was not Thep or Pawn. Thep was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was now suffering the consequences. 30
By the time I arrived in Thailand, Thep had already served nearly 3 months of incarceration in Nong Palai. According to Thep’s friends and his family, his biggest concern was not the prison– it was what this was going to do to his relationship with me. Yaba had been the source of all our major battles over the years, and if he hadn’t been able to recover from this two years ago, we would not have married. I was so disappointed but at the same time relieved, that something worse had not happened to him.
The Pattaya Remand Prison in Nong Palai is for prisoners awaiting trial and those who have prison sentences of less than ten years. Built to hold about 700 inmates, there are now over 2,000, including 400 women. They are separated into two blocks for men, one for women, one for waiting trial and one for convicts sentenced up to ten years. Ladyboys are separated to protect them from the abuse they would suffer if housed with the male population. Unlike many stories you hear about Thai prison life, sexual interactions are rare. Those caught engaging in sex may be beaten or locked in shackles. Shackles are the greater of the two punishments as the heavy chains drain a person’s energy so much that it can be life threatening and there are no set conditions regarding the length of time that the inmate will remain shackled. The daily regime is arduous and horrific. If you have money, you can buy small things like water, soap, coffee, towels or blankets. They sleep on the floor using other inmate’s feet as their pillows.
I made the 35 km drive from Jomtien to Nong Palai daily on my trusty motorbikeup at 5:30 AM and getting to Nong Palai by 7:00 AM. During the rainstorms of October and early November, it was an adventure I hope never to relive. After several weeks, I learned the ropes. The first thing I learned was to get there early or else spend the entire day sitting around under the trees waiting for his name to be broadcast over the loud speaker. I never once in 2-1/2 months of daily visits saw another farang. The Thai visitors and the guards, who saw me every day, were openly friendly. I was ‘jai dee’ in their book. After a while, the guards at the entrance stopped taking my passport and simply smiled, patted me on the back and motioned for me to enter. I encountered the same level of courtesy when standing in the long lines after the visit was finished to order food for Thep. The minute one of the guards spotted me in line they would motion me to go to the front of the line. These kind gestures became more pronounced as time went on. The Great Kennedy Conspiracy The History Channel (True Vision ch.18) has been screening The Kennedy’s in Thailand but on 7 January 2011, History announced that it would not show The Kennedys in the United States, stating, “this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.” So why show it here?
It is a story of epic, Shakespearean proportion. It has everything. Money, power, sex and sudden, violent death. Camelot at Hyannis Port was recreated by the miracle of computer generated imagery. Endless ‘the making of’ snippets assured that the pictures on the walls of the Oval office were faithfully reproduced, a nation had been scoured to find period vehicles, Kennedy’s desk set- a gift from France, was just like the original and a thousand seamstresses got the wardrobe just right. But, in true tabloid style, facts were never going to spoil a good story. 32
Not even when there are eight hours of screen time to tell it. The Kennedy’s told us nothing that we didn’t already know but it’s failure was in not telling us much of what we did and never daring to tell us something new. Tom Wilkinson’s patriarchal monster, Joe snr., was sturdily played, Katie Holmes’ Jackie looked as authentic as Greg Kinnear’s JFK and Barry Pepper looked and sounded seasoned as Bobby. The aptly named Diana Hardcastle portrayed Rose as the Catholic fanatic she was. J. Edgar Hoover, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe
and LBJ flitted in on cue but there were glaring, self conscious, unbelievable omissions. Where was Edward? Not a mention. Not even a place in the faux family photos that littered The Kennedys’ sets. Not one shot. Ted replaced JFK in the Senate and was re-elected seven more times before his death. The Chappaquiddick incident which resulted in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne: missing in the action. No mention of the Warren Commission and its alleged omissions either. And little mention of where the Kennedy clan got its phenomenal wealthJoe’s illicit booze bootlegging business. Jack Kennedy was a young and handsome, charismatic president and the world’s shock at his assassination was genuine.
Everyone alive at that time really can remember where they were when they heard the news. If the production failed on historic fact, surely it would capitalise on the raw drama of the story? No. It was botched and squandered the chance to engage the viewers’ emotions. The Kennedys was a skipping stone that skimmed the surface, barely caused a splash and will sink without trace- a glossy production that was all style and no substance. Airbrushed and spurious speculation, as in 2006’s movie, The Queen, dubious conjecture and artistic license do not make historical record. Just a celebrity soap opera that leaves the masses feeling as though they have inside knowledge and is a conspiracy of ignorance disguised as fact. 33
BANGKOK LOVE STORY By Brian Baxter
Re-viewing this movie was inevitably done on DVD. Enjoyable though it proved the high emotions and lush photography had worked much better on the big screen: a compliment, since it is not a predictable TVM but a full blooded, controversial melodrama.
When this film emerged, the same year as the beguiling Love of Siam (2007), it seemed possible that the seeds of grownup gay cinema, apparent in Thailand since the 1980s, might burst into bloom. Most ‘gay’ movies here feature offensive stereotypes, but the 2007 offerings boasted convincing central characters. One used adolescent angst and music as the background, whereas the relationships in the grittier movie are revealed within a violent urban setting, accentuating class differences between the protagonists. The story tells of Maek (Rattanballang Tohssauat) who supports his mother (an AIDS victim) and younger brother (shown as raped by his father and ‘anti-gay’) by working as a killer in Bangkok. One designated contract is a handsome young lawyer, Iht (Chaiwat Thongsaan), whom 34
he kidnaps and drags to the gang leaders. Told to kill him, he relents and shoots them instead. The guys are soon on the run, with Maek injured. This opening sequence is the springboard for the development of their passionate relationship, which is initially rejected by the sturdier Maek to the dismay of the (married) Iht. The writer–director Poj Arnon pushes the melancholy outcome to the limits, in deference to Thai sensibilities. Even so, the film engages our sympathy for the young men – not least because of the winning performance by Chaiwat. By the standards of most Thai movies it is adult, even groundbreaking, and seems to fly in the face of draconian censorship. We can only regret that 2007 proved something of an anti- climax not a breakthrough.
THE TREE OF LIFE The good news is that Malick has already completed a new film (the shortest gap in his career – one fallow period lasted 20 years) and is at work on a new one.
Why write about a film not scheduled for release in Thailand? Firstly because it is a masterpiece and a work that deserves an audience which will eventually emerge on DVD: a sad fate for a work by Terrence Malick, the creator of the most beautiful and visually arresting movies of the past decades. Readers in the many countries who see OUT in Thailand may be lucky enough to see it on the big screen as I did whilst back in the U.K. Malick’s fifth film in 38 years took the Palme d’Or at its Cannes Film Festival premiere this May. Along with Haneke’s The White Ribbon it makes most works of the past decade look puny.
The Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt (as you’ve never seen him before!), who confirms the talent and breadth of ambition shown in several earlier movies. He plays the religious, uptight head of a Texan family c. the late 1950s. The story recounted in flashback by the oldest son (Sean Penn) portrays the difficult relationship between father and son and the supportive but submissive mother. The impressionistic drama hinges on the unexplained deaths of his siblings and the astonishingly wrought Texan setting – the state in which Malick was born in the 1940s and still lives. This masterly work deserves (needs) several viewings, so intense is the experience. Malick creates a dream world, an inner consciousness unlike the work of any other director. We enter a private world through elliptical images, buoyed by a complex sound track (and minimal dialogue) with a raft of music. Experiencing this film is unlike any other – even Malick’s earlier masterpieces including The Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line. 35

a particular time and wait until a better exchange rate this will help you. You really need to consult with a professional and check on the usual indications that a currency will fluctuate in or against your favour. This is not foolproof but will help you have a better ‘average exchange rate’ once evening it out over the years, For more information, please contact me directly.
Dear Peter,
I wish you all the best Peter!
Good question, people usually incur a fee no matter who they are or the amount they are transferring, 2 options for you: 1) Figure out how much you need annually then transfer at one time, this will save the transfer cost. 2) Join the same bank in the UK as here. Sometimes within banks (check with your local institutions), they have international transfers at no costit can depend on which zones you are transferring from, but this will save you a lot over the years.
Regards
I have some capital in the UK but lose a fortune with every transfer to Thailand, especially with the low exchange rates. Advice please? Best wishes,
As for exchange rates, currency fluctuations are one of the things that people cannot really predict, that’s why Warren Buffet stays away from it! This comes down to timing- when you need the money. If you had the luxury to not have to bring the money over to Thailand at 36

Ask Darika
Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. Please contact her at: darika@out-in-thailand.com. You can also find more helpful advice on her website: www.askdarika.com Dear Darika, Although my health is great, I’m now in my mid 40s and appear less youthful than I used to. I am considering a number of surgical procedures on my face to change that. My friends think I am out of my mind. Your website says that you “share beauty secrets.” So tell me what you think. And can you recommend a great surgeon? Cheers, Paul Dear Paul, Gravity takes its toll and Darika has to admit that she once had bag dangling from her chin that might have impressed Louis Vuitton. Having it removed was no walk in the park. I had so many band38
ages around my head that I must have looked like a mummy. Beneath them I was black and blue and hid for two weeks. In the end, I was glad I did it because it made me feel better about myself, which is something people notice every bit as much as a blob of fat on your neck. I am happy to recommend my favorite surgeon privately to anyone who asks. However, let me give you some sound advice. First, you get what you pay for. Darika sees the consequences of poor craftsmanship almost daily on the streets of Bangkok. The last thing you should do is Google “Plastic Surgery Thailand” and choose the cheapest clinic you can find. Shop around for a surgeon that you feel comfortable with, and see at least three. Finally, be realistic about the outcome. For at least two weeks you will look and feel like you survived a train wreck. It will take six months for the swelling to completely disappear. In the end, you will not look like Brad Pitt and more than I ended up looking like Angelina Jolie. (Nevertheless I continue trying. I will soon be due for further repairs, including cute dimples in my cheeks.) So if you are serious about doing this and can afford a doctor who will not leave you looking like Marilyn Manson or Jocelyn Wildenstein, you have Darika’s blessing. Good luck! Love, Darika Pa Darika, There is a small problem about my body that I am too shy to discuss with my friends. I have a lot of hair “down there.” There is really a lot of it. I am afraid no boy will like me. Love, Noi
Dear Noi, If you think that changing part of your body will make you feel happier about yourself, that is what you should do. The best way to begin is by shaving off all of your unwanted hair, which is very fashionable nowadays (it is always more fun if you find a friend to do the shaving for you). Two or three days after shaving, however, you may be very uncomfortable, and not very sexy at all. Other solutions are available and Darika has tried them all. (Darika has a big problem with unwanted hair between her eyebrows. It is like I have one giant eyebrow that goes from one side of my face to the other. It is not very glamorous.) Spas and salons like Up2 offer treatments that will remove unwanted hair for a longer period of time than shaving. “Waxing” is the least expensive, although some
people find it a bit painful “down there,” although on the face, chest, arms or bottom it is less uncomfortable. Hair can be removed permanently by laser in a cosmetic surgery clinic. This is mildly painful but you never have to do it again. It is also quite expensive. Noi, listen carefully to Darika. Boys will like you because of your heart and your smile. Some will actually enjoy your forest of fur. Maybe the best treatment of all is not to change anything but your attitude. If you are looking for friendship or love and not just sex, remind yourself that nobody will love you any more or any less because of all this special hair fate gave you. I am sure you are very beautiful already.

Let’s Do It… When you are in the mood the last thing on your mind is an improvement in your immune system or reducing weight. Here are seven ways that sex improves your health: Stress Relief Sex lowers stress and blood pressure the effects are greater with full sexual intercourse than other forms of sexual relief. Immunity Boost An American study showed that frequent sexual activity, once or twice a week, will increase an antibody called IgA that protects against colds and other minor infections. Fewer encounters have no IgA effect. Burns Calories Half an hour of sex will use up about 90 calories, doesn’t sound great but it all adds up. Extend love-making to one hour for 21 sessions and over 3,500 calories disappear. Improving Circulation A British study followed 914 Welshmen for 20 years and found that there was a significant increase in heart and artery health. Those having frequent sex lived longer and were had a reduced inci40

dence of strokes than those who had less sex. Once weekly sex reduced heart attack risk by half. Pain Relief The hormones oxytocin and endorphins increase during sex reducing headaches and arthritic pain. Reduced Prostate Cancer Risk In 20-something men frequent ejaculations may reduce the risk of prostate cancer in later life. For 20-somthings five or more weekly ejaculations significantly reduced the risk of prostate cancer when in their 50s and sixties. Sleep Tight Sex improves sleep patterns and sufficient sleep helps maintain appropriate weight, controls blood pressure, and improves mood. Sex has benefits outside the bedroom and will improve your life and health in many unexpected ways. So guys, there is NO excuse to say no!

CITYGUIDES LISTINGS +MAPS BANGKOK, PATTAYA, PHUKET, CHIANG MAI & KOH SAMUI
OUT in Bangkok If you like buzzing big cities, Bangkok is for you! Public transport, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.
The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists. Bangkok is the gay capital of Asia. Most visitors go to Suriwongse, Silom and Sathorn Road. Senso and Santuary Spa by A feature among many massage spas. Tarntawan Place is a superb hotel close to the business district and nightlife. Balcony Pub is a popular watering hole and if meaty muscle guys get you hot, head for The Tawan Bar.
College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 CafĂŠ, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! 43

OUT in Chiang Mai C
Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’
Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom is renowned as the cultural capital of Thailand, nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations.
Try the superb La Fourchette (French) and Prego (Italian & Thai) restaurants inside the moated, old city walls and the inviting Yokka Dok bar/restaurant/ guesthouse. The two main gay centres are outside the moat. The Chang Pueak area, north of the moat is where you will find Adam’s Apple Club- sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys. Across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction with famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Gemini Massage, has regular promotions and is recommended. Niammanhaemin and Santitham have some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars. On Huay Kaew Road you will find the excellent Soho 54
Bar and Guesthouse who now serve incomparable New Orleans food. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male, from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. OUT in Phuket P
Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds with a fabulous variety of things to do. Phuket has many beaches- some hidden away, is a popular international tourist destination and we recommend you to use a gay (friendly) tour company and our guide to find your accommodation.
The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated in the aptly named Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are on the exit road out of Paradise Complex, with most of the gay (friendly) hotels & guesthouses, and cabaret/go-go bars, a gay sauna, disco’s, go-go and host bars, restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, etc. Also popular are the outdoor “Beer Bars” of which the most popular is Sundowners Lounge Bar & Guesthouse with Le Bistro offer a 10% discount for ‘frequent fliers’. Fongkaew Mansion & Baan Nang Fa Guesthouse is ideally located, near to all the fun, along with Aquarius Guesthouse & Sauna and Adonis Guesthouse. 64
Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venues worth the visit. Among them The Backstage, which also serves good Thai fast food, coffee and is slowly starting to build its own little cabaret show. The recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar is a Phuket icon. The Minotel is just 3 minutes walk from Patong Beach. For all the venues, check out our maps and listings.
Purple Meeting Point The place to make & meet friends, to eat, drink, unwind, relax, enjoy!
The Minotel offers 20 comfortable and air conditioned ensuite rooms in the centre of Patong. Its just 3 minutes walk to the beach or to the Paradise complex. All rooms have a fridge, cable TV and free wi-fi.
we also HAVE or organize: - Cabaret - Live music - private parties & cruises - KARAOKE - FREE WIFI

OUT in Pattaya P
Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets.
In the daytime, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach. The Jomtien Complex has a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above. Mata Hari is an excellent eatery and, not too far down the road is the very popular Sansuk Sauna & Guesthouse and the newly opened, luxurious, Baan Suoy Resort. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. 74
In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. The Sunee Plaza area, with around 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. Getaway to Koh Samed for a paradise island break. Ferries, private hire and speed boat taxis from Ban Phe will take you direct to Ao Phai Beach- very popular with the Bangkok gay crowd at weekends and stay at Silver Sand Resort www.silversandsamed.com.

OUT in Koh Samui J
Jungle covered craggy hills, roads weaving through lush coconut plantations, huge trees, orchids, butterflies, quiet beaches, fresh local fruits. Koh Samui is the perfect tropical island get away for gay boys, especially couples who kick back, recharge in spas or health resorts, lounge around their villa pool, take long beach walks, sip a cocktail or three in a rustic beach bar and sparkle on the balmy evening party circuit with the local guys.
Gay life on Samui is smaller, less exuberant than most other Thai destinations, still there is plenty happening with gay bars, disco, cabaret, island tours and as the regional spa capital, massage and body treatments. The center of gay day/ nightlife is along Chaweng Beach Road. At the north end opposite Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club a well-established gay only spa, the market leader for a range of quality massage techniques, herbal body treatments, facials, manicure/pedicure. Behind the new Starbucks is K Club, a recently refurbished, lively gay bar with take away staff and Together Massage and Spa. Mekkala Men Spa promise to rejuvenate your senses and in south Chaweng, opposite the Centara Resort is Boy Zone a smart gay bar with
a nightly dance show at 11.30 pm and take away staff. Further out of Chaweng in Cheong Mon, close to Sala Samui is Saiwon Mens Spa men only massage and body treatments. From midnight to 2 pm Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul disco/bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music and mixed crowds. For an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at gay venues or ask your hotel for a copy.
