West Phillips is a hunky 34-year-old photographer, currently based in San Francisco; he has travelled extensively in South East Asia and has a keen eye for male beauty. West spoke to James Barnes about his life and work, sharing some stunning images with OUT iT.

The blonde hair, blue eyes and razor blade smile, suggest a typical West Coast beach boy but West Phillips was born in a small country town in Virginia, USA. He says he had a typical boyhoodplaying in the dirt, building forts, getting dirty, fishing and hunting. “My father was a master falconer, so we always had all sorts of exotic birds around. I learned to train and work with falcons and hawks from an early age and developed a great love for wildlife and animals,” he recalls. 12

“I have had many different jobs,” he says, “during college I worked for Abercrombie & Fitch in a store. The most memorable job I had was as a zookeeper. My love of animals really helped me and I learned so much. It was amazing to work with so many different animalsblack Rhinos, orang-utans, pelicans, snakes, and cheetahs, to name a few of my favourites.” But he soon left the wildlife behind to lead a wild life as a professional photographer.

“I’ve always had an interest in photography and whenever I would travel with my family or friends I would take my camera. I never considered getting serious about photography until I lived in New York City in late 2009. My first ‘models’ were actually different guys I was dating at the time,” West laughs aloud at the memory. “I felt weird asking, but I just had this immense desire to capture these guys in all of their beauty and individuality. The rest, as they say, is history. These days I don’t usually photograph the guys I date...much!”

West is a fan of the freedom that digital photography delivers: “It’s 2011 and as far as I’m concerned, there’s no other way. Film is great and can give a truly classic and timeless appearance but you can get that with digital...and better!” For West Phillips, photography is more than just taking a picture: “That’s the easy part,” he says. He may spend two hours shooting a model but will spend weeks editing and re-editing. “Some of the photos may not appeal to me for different reasons, but as I take a 2nd, 3rd and 10th look, I see different things and find inspiration. I don’t always have a clear idea of how I want the final image to look, and with digital that’s ok. It leaves the door open for endless possibilities!” 13

West first came to SE Asia in 2007. “I loved it! I was with my ex boyfriend. We travelled to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. I found the people of SE Asia to be nicer than anywhere else I visited in Asia.” Thailand was a clear favourite, “It was an amazing time. One of my most memorable experiences of my entire Asian trip was in Krabi. We stayed at a resort where a local came to the property each morning with a baby elephant. One morning there was a small group of us on the beach with the elephant and its owner. Now, common sense (and zookeeper sense) told me that swimming with an elephant might not be a great idea. Imagine those massive, strong legs kicking you! I kept my legs up and treaded water as best I could and had the amazing experience of swimming in Thailand with this awesome animal.” There was fun in the Big Mango too: “We were in Bangkok and I really wanted to go out and explore the city,” he says, “I was curious to explore some of the places I had heard about. I wasn’t looking for anything specific, or maybe I was, but I just wanted to break out, get a little wild 14

and enjoy myself. My ex wasn’t keen on us doing much of anything. We agreed to have dinner and then have one drink in a gay bar. We went to eat but I have a severe allergy to prawns and crabs. We got our meal and began eating when he suddenly spits his out and yells for me not to take a bite, as he slaps my fork out of my hand! There was some sort of shellfish in the food, rather than calmly tell me not to eat it, he made a complete scene, and had everyone around us staring and afraid to eat their own meals. We tried as best we could to let them know it was my allergy and not the actual food! It’s funny that he spat out his own food- he’s not allergic!” West is unconcerned that Asian models are not fashionable in his home country:”From the first time I picked up a camera to photograph my first model, I didn’t see any specific race. I’m drawn to whatever outward beauty they possess. Many U.S. photographers seem only to photograph what the western media wants to see - blonde hair, blue eyes, Caucasian. This image is predominant in the U.S. and while that look can be

appealing, to me it is extremely limiting and narrow-minded. Friends of mine have made the comparison of my photography to my dating life. I have dated guys from all walks of life and different backgrounds. From the all-American college boy, the exotic dark-skinned South American to the Japanese figure skater. I think the key to being successful is to make your own path and do what you want, photograph WHO you want. I have to enjoy what I do and to let my passion and creativity take full control. If my Asian model isn’t considered ‘hot’ by the western media, then I really don’t care. I’m going to be me and won’t compromise my own vision just to be accepted by the mass media.” Most recently, West has worked with adult film star and model, Peter Le for his website, peterfever.com. “Peter and I had the first of many photo shoots together earlier this year and each one has been magic in producing some beautiful work. Since I returned to the US from Australia, working with Peter has really taken me to a new level. He has a huge following and in my collaborations with him I have been able to better define my own niche in the photography industry.” West is keen to get back to Thailand, “I would love to come there for a few months...or a few years! I’m currently pursuing opportunities in Asia that will allow me the freedom and opportunity to return and do what I love...photographing beautiful people! This year marks 30 years since the discovery of the first case of what was later identified as AIDS. With that news, our lives and relationships as gay men were forever altered. We witnessed an unthinkable tragedy that has taken the lives of more than a quarter-million of our gay and bisexual friends and lovers.

In the face of this devastation, leaders emerged. The crisis helped to shape our community’s political agenda, and it provided a platform around which gay leaders could advocate for rights and equality. We realized that if we informed ourselves and acted on what we learned, we could be greater than the disease. Thanks to the efforts of gay men and our allies, our community saw a dramatic decline in new infections by the late 1980s. Many of us can look back with immense pride at the collective response in those early years. The availability of effective combination drug therapies in 1996 fundamentally changed how we thought about HIV. No longer was HIV the death sentence it had once been. We had new hope. For many, HIV was a manageable chronic dis18

ease. Many of us turned our attention to marriage equality, adoption rights, the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” and other pressing issues facing our community. While we broadened our focus, AIDS did not. When we become complacent, HIV thrives. New HIV infections among gay and bisexual men in the United States are on the rise. Yes, on the rise. We are the only risk group for whom this is the case. According to a recent study by the CDC, one in five of us—that is, gay and bisexual men-—in some of the largest U.S. cities today are living with HIV, and half of those who are positive do not know it. Unless we act now, we will see these numbers rise even higher, and quickly.

My partner, Sir Elton John, often talks of his friend Ryan White—a boy whose tremendous courage in the face of AIDS forced our leaders to take action and inspired many of us. Today, Ryan’s story continues to remind us that just as HIV began one person at a time, it will end one person a time. Elton and I recently had a baby boy. Becoming fathers has given us new perspective on what it means to take care of one another—as parents, as partners, and as members of a community. And, it reminds us that we cannot be complacent in helping to create the kind of society in which we want our son to grow up. In short, we all must take responsibility and do our part to create a future free of HIV—by being informed, using protec-

tion, getting tested and treated, and getting involved. And so, as we mark 30 years of this disease, Elton and I have recommitted ourselves to being greater than AIDS. As chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, I’m proud of the community organizations with which we are working to fight stigma and prevent the spread of the disease. And I’m proud that leading LGBT companies, like HERE Media, LOGO TV, and OutSmart magazine, are refocusing attention on this epidemic. I hope more will join us. Gay Tv Star Martyn Andrews At 32 years old, handsome British TV presenter Martyn Andrews has visited more countries than most of us do in a lifetime. Hosting dozens of cookery, entertainment and travel shows for English speaking TV networks around the world, his programmes play in over 100 countries. The Liverpool born TV star lives between London, Moscow and Cyprus and has fans from Bangkok to Barbados. James Barnes recently caught up with him while filming near Helsinki, Finland....

IS THIS YOUR FIRST INTERVIEW WITH A GAY MAGAZINE? Goodness no! After hosting the live coverage of the 2009 Eurovision Song contest in Moscow, the gay press around the world became more interested in my work. Let’s face it, the event is so kitsch and camp! Disco divas, sequins, cheesy songs and feathers galore! It was the first year the UK celebrity Graham Norton did the coverage for the BBC and people kept on getting us mixed up! With my background performing on stage in Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, Starlight Express and Whistle Down the Wind, I was interested in Eurovision as a singer and a journalist.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING INTERVIEWED? I spend my life interviewing other people. I am paid for talking, telling stories, making jokes, laughing and communicating. I’m a natural entertainer It’s just everyday life for me. I have always been nosey and interested in others. Listening is important too. People don’t do that enough. I love stories from the heart, about passion, risk taking or triumph. I have always worn my heart on my sleeve. I’m very open and honest. If that includes my age, sexuality, opinions, past, regrets then so be it. I’m gay, so what? I’m hard working, passionate, I love life, I’m a nice person and I hope very humble, grounded and professional.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A TV PRESENTER AND JOURNALIST? I always I wanted to be in professional large-scale musicals and then move into TV presenting. Through lots of hard work and patience, that’s exactly what I did! I have always been competitive which I think is a healthy thing. My love of text and speech started as a child, entering poetry and prose festivals. Some I won, others I did not. I learned about presentation, language, gestures and pause etc. I felt so at home talking in front of an audience. I always loved writing and photography as well as performing. It was the creative part of being an actor-singer that I adored so much. Playing with words, providing the right reactions, suggesting direction, how the scene should look and so on. I knew TV presenting was my next step. It was time to write my own fate and to be imaginative in front and behind the camera! So I took six months out and trained as a journalist in London. It was a big risk but it paid off. WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION OR HERO? I used to watch a BBC children’s programme called Blue Peter. There were four presenters in their late twenties who did everything from travel the world to cookery. I arranged to do work experience at the BBC on the same show when I was 17 years old. The studios in London, meeting the presenters, the camer-

as, the hundreds of lights above and the buzz of live TV- the adrenalin was amazing. I thought I have to be part of this - I was hooked!! As a teenager, I used to take my father’s VHS video recorder and pretend with friends that we were presenting morning chat shows or travel programmes. I still have the same passion for programme making today and from filming in minus 40 to plus 40, it has never disappeared! As for heroes, I always looked up to English TV hosts such as Philip Schofield, Bruce Forsyth and the famous travel presenter Judith Chalmers. I always said “when I grow up I want her job!” I’m on my 132nd country now I think. Not bad! As for BBC’s Blue Peter they were looking for presenters last year. They said I was too old!! I didn’t know if to laugh or cry! Say no more.. That’s show business! WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST TV BREAK? My first ever TV break was at the BBC. I was 16 years old. I won a Shakespeare festival and the same judge was also head of religion for our local education borough. The popular programme, “Songs of Praise” wanted young presenters for a special show. I was screen tested and offered the position! Simple as that! I remember my first day recording the programme in front of a large audience. Wow! Everyone said what a natural I was, although I’m sure I wasn’t that good – one thing was for sure: the TV seed was sown. 21

IT’S VERY RARE FOR A TV PRESENTER TO BE WORKING IN SO MANY COUNTRIES AND HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? I was performing in musicals in the UK in 2003, I was on a vacation to New York, and I randomly met a TV producer at a dinner party in the Ritz Carlton. *Note to everyone - hang out with the right people at the right places! We chatted for hours, laughed and I knew I had made a new friend. A few weeks later, she emailed me asking would I want to work on a project for a TV company based out of Israel. No screen test, interview, nothing. She flew me one way, first class to Tel Aviv and a week later, we were filming inside the Giza Pyramids in Egypt. Result! For months I then flew around the Middle East on private jets, in helicopters, spent time on multimillion dollar yachts and opened mummy’s secret tombs. I couldn’t believe my luck. After almost a year I worked on a dangerous diving documentary series for their sister channel in America. I trained and filmed in various exotic marine locations such as Bermuda, Hawaii, Israel, Australia, Egypt, Florida and of course Thailand. It seems I was born to live on planes. 22

DOES LIVING IN THREE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES MAKE RELATIONSHIPS DIFFICULT? It is an amazing thing to be paid to see the world. I travelled for hours to the middle of central Russia for example, through snowy villages over bumpy icy tracks and eventually arrived at an old wooden house closed to the public. We started to film, the door was unlocked, we entered and in the far corner was a piano. I started to play it and revealed that this was the actual piano Tchaikovsky had learnt to play on. Amazing stuff. Goosebumps. Presenting travel shows can be very lonely at times, I often wake up not knowing what country I’m in and I’m always missing birthday parties etc. As for my love life, I am single and happy! It’s very hard to have a relationship when I’m in London for just ten days a month. I’ve been single for two years now. My last relationship was for six years. We are still the best of friends and speak every day which is perfect! After being in relationships my entire twenties – the next decade I have nicknamed the flirty thirties! I do want to settle down and marry someone one day though!

WHAT CITIES DID YOU VISIT IN THAILAND? I have visited Thailand about four times. I once had just “one night in Bangkok” because I loved the song from Chess the musical so much! I have been to Bangkok every time and recently Phuket, Phi Phi, Hong Island and Krabi. I adore the country and will visit again soon! The people are so friendly, the food wicked and you can have massages every day. Bliss.. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE THAI DESTINATION? I love the skyscrapers bars in Bangkok! Vertigo on top of the Banyan Tree hotel is a must- one of the best in the world. The Telephone Bar is fun too. Glamour aside I adored Krabi - the ocean, the dramatic rock formations on the beach etc. It was must less hectic, quieter than good old Phuket! I loved it there too. Krabi however was about relaxation, amazing sand, pink and orange sunsets, massage, fabulous food and relaxing people. The closest thing to paradise. I am eager to visit Chiang Mi and Koh Samui so I will be certainly be back for sure! WHAT ARE YOU TOP TRAVEL TIPS? Email yourself a scan of your credit cards, passport numbers, emergency contacts and embassy number – hence wherever you are you will have a “virtual copy”. Always check in at the airport very late, ten minutes before the check in closes. You have far more chance of getting upgraded if economy is full (you might also be fast tracked through security too!) Make friends with local people while always thinking about security and safety. I’m very pro active when it comes to networking- meeting locals through websites

I’ve been on mopeds in Ho Chi Minh, at a plastic surgery party in Romania, a VIP private house party in Buenos Aires all through meeting random interesting people. Travelling the world is not a time to be shy! Go out there, be safe, use your common sense, meet locals, fellow travellers and have fun. We only live once! 23

After being workaholic for almost a year, I eventually take a break for 3 weeks and visit my home in Bangkok. The chaos in the city excites me but I know this feeling will not last long. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I decided to work down south of the country where I can have peace of mind. This homecoming stimulates my sin blood and temptations are everywhere.

somehow. I made this decision when I was a teenager but I have never looked down on anyone who pays or receives money for sex because we are all different. I admit that I have never had a long term relationship due to my insecurity, I am afraid of being rejected; as a result, I am now a 35 year old and a completely single gay man. Is that sad?

I have no doubt, I am gay but I am a very shy person when it comes to sex- even flirting. I enjoy it very much but regret it afterwards. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I always subconsciously build a wall to protect myself from disappointment and denial.

Since I was 30, I started being curious about my sexual capability: can I be a top? This question had been bothering me and I needed to know before it is too late. Life is short! I might be hit by a truck and run over before I know my potential. A connection from a group of friends brought me the answer: I have broken my own rule. I paid for sex and there the story begins.

I set a rule for myself: I am not going to pay for SEX no matter what! Honestly, this makes me feel I am a good person 24

I will lose credit if the appointment made with the mamasan is cancelled and I may not get good service or be turned away the next time. He knows all the boys very well. He calls them and they turn up and join me for a drink. It’s like a party actually. I went with a group of four and met two at the house with a small open hut in front of it. It is just a regular room with a single bed and bath. On my arrival, five young guys are already in the hut. One of the boys serves a bottle of whisky with mixer and ice cubes. The atmosphere is fun. It is like a small party with close friends. What surprises me is that they are polite and funny. Socialising, talking, drinking and of course, laughing at dirty jokes. A friend pushes me to go with a boy who just arrived.

It is natural to drive on my desire and I cannot deny it, but how to avoid regretting my actions afterwards? Nook is the boy I go with. He is quite skinny, not my type, but as tall as me with a clean look. He is gentle and politely greeted me with a Wai. His tone of voice is nice and his appearance is good. Obviously, he knows what he is doing whilst I felt awkward. I was a bit nervous at first but he comforted me behind the closed door. That night I have my curiosity cleared, thank you Nook. That is my first. I will be a liar if I say I don’t like it but I am uncertain if I want to go for second time! The sex is great but it tortures me emotionally. I really cannot balance between having sex with a stranger and the morality learned when I was young. It is such a confusing and frustrating situation. I feel like there are two people fighting inside my head. One loves all the sex and wants to do everything but another tells me it’s wrong “You are manipulating him; you are a real bad person- shame 25

Part 3; Missing the Missing By Dodger

When I got back to the USA, Thep had just got off the bus in Si Saket to stay with his family until my return. We spent the next two weeks talking on the phone every day- our routine for years now. He would hold the phone out the window of our newly constructed jungle house so I could hear the rooster’s crow. He would yell out to whichever family member was in sight to say hi to me. Trivial sounding communications between two people, although significant being the only connection we had together during these periods of separation. 26

On July 4th, we had one of our textbook arguments. He wanted to return to Pattaya for a few days to attend a concert with his friends. Thep is an absolute fan of this one popular Isaan band and reacts to their concerts in the same manner that I did years ago when Jethro Tull was playing at the Chicago Stadium. Thep got in trouble the last time he attended this concert and I was opposed to him going. In 2007, Thep and a bunch of friends were arrested for failing a pee test following this concert- the first time I knew about his yaba use. His mention of this concert again, raised the hairs on the back of my neck and my answer was, “No, not a good idea.”

July 5th: no answer on his telephone. Maybe he was at the market with his mom or still sleeping, his favorite pastime when the farm chores beckon. July 6th – the same result. ‘That little bastard went to the concert.’ I did not phone him for the next few days thinking he would call when he returned, full of explanations and apologies. The call never came. My thoughts swayed towards the possibility that he extended his stay in Pattaya to party with his friends and was just afraid to call me but this didn’t make sense, as this behavior had ended years ago. My anger turned to concern. Weeks passed without the phone ringing. Weeks turned to months until the point at which I felt something bad had happened to him and there was no way anyone could inform me if it had. September arrived and boarded the plane for Thailand. myself waking up alone in the bed. I counted the minutes during the day until the evening came where I could go to see Thep’s friends to hear the news. At 8:00 pm sharp, I was standing in front of the go-go bar where a few of his friends still worked. I was greeted by the mamasan, who I’ve known for years and who looked at me as if he had seen a ghost. After a short pause and with a sense of panic in his voice, he asked me if I knew about Thep. I said no, that I had just arrived and hadn’t spoken with Thep in 3 months. At hearing this he put his arms around me and said…”I’m so sorry this happened.” At hearing those words I felt my legs go numb and started seeing my life flash in front of my eyes, I just kept repeating…”What happened? – What happened?” and the answer seemed to linger on his lips forever... OUT on TV Jay Talking US TV invented the talk show; a cheap (same set, same lights, little post production) and cheerful schedule regular, copied the world over. When chat king Johnny Carson departed The Tonight Show, his mantle was presented to Jay Leno. That was back in 1992 and Leno is still talking but does he have anything to say?

Jay Leno is a dapper chap. His bespoke suits probably cost more than the annual salary of his average viewer. They shine. They are impeccably cut. They hang like opulent drapes in a royal palace. They flatter and slim. They are gorgeous. That is, sadly, where the good news ends. The format of this show has not changed since those watery black and white days of the 1960’s. So fans of nostalgia can wallow in The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (True Visions ch 95 CNBC) but nostalgia is not what it used to be. 28

The announcer still announces the menu over the house band in tones that suggest a life-changing event, sowing the seeds of inevitable disappointment. The first ten minutes are Jay’s stand-up routine; a monotonous monologue where gags are met with applause but very rarely, laughter- a sure sign that a comic isn’t comical. The next ten minutes, sees Jay’s bankers’ trousers hidden behind Jay’s banker’s desk as he furthers the case of those who believe that satire is dead by delivering novelty items intended to hit hilarious targets- they invariably miss.

Then come the ‘guests’. Usually a movie star, TV star, pop star or author and always there to plug their latest product which means the producers pay limited fees for their advertorial appearances. The commercial medium that is The Tonight Show is a US institution but really, who wants to be part of an institution? Jay says that he interviews. He doesn’t. His ego is bigger than his oversized chin and he is far more enthusiastic about the sound of his own voice than the voices of his ‘guests’. He barely listens to what they have to say and is keen to interrupt them in order to bask in their reflected glory. There is little or no conversation, it is all an opportunity for Jay to inject his ill-judged jokes and further inflate his bloated self-importance.

The show generally ends with a musical item. A band, a singer. It is the best part of the whole business but maybe that’s just because you know that it is the one part of the programme that Jay is not on the screen 29

Twelve of the Best By Brian Baxter

The first article in a series, playing that much beloved ‘game’ – choosing the best directors, their best films. Is there a more enjoyable – or pointless – pastime? And yet we all do it, from the most illustrious film makers and erudite critics to the lowliest film buff. Nothing is set in stone: tomorrow I might well substitute Lancelot or Balthazar (his most highly regarded work) as my Bresson choice and I know that it is still a toss up between three films for Rossellini and at the time of writing we have yet to see Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life in Thailand. Will that replace The Thin Red Line? The directors comprise eight who are no longer with us and four who are happily active. They come from various countries and there’s a bonus movie, making a ‘Baxter’s dozen’: the perfect desert island choice from a director not in the pantheon list who created a work of sublime perfection. Robert Bresson: France: 1907(?) – 1999. This elegant, mysterious and revolutionary made just one comic short in the 1930s, the decade in which he painted, took photographs and played the piano. After spending 18 months in a German p.o.w. camp, he emerged into an occupied Paris and began making films, with 30

the haunting Les Anges du Peche. He subsequently made twelve feature films and wrote a wonderful book, Notes of a Cinematographer. Bresson refused to compromise. He never worked outside cinema, in the theatre or opera house, as a writer for hire or in television. He seldom gave interviews. Lived on the Isle St Louis in Paris and a country retreat and refused travel outside France in later years. With just 13 films between 1942 and 1981 and only one great commercial success (A Man Escaped in 1956) he has remained as arguably the most admired film maker by his peers and certainly the most demanding in his concern with the interior ‘movement’ of characters. From his fourth film he employed no professional actors, eschewed music except that integrated into the film, wrote and directed without collaborators and made this final film, which he considered the ‘one I am least dissatisfied with’.

Choice: L’Argent (1981). Based on and updated from Tolstoy’s The False Note, it tells of a young man, Yvon, who is duped into accepting forged banknotes and sentenced to prison: initiating a series of tragedies, which lead to murder and the most enigmatic ending in cinema history. Terence Davies: U.K. 1945. Davies began his professional career as an actor, with a wonderfully resonant voice, used to great effect in his documentary about his home town of Liverpool, Of Time and the City (2008). He started directing shorts later combined into The Terence Davies Trilogy (1984). Apart from that achingly beautiful and harsh debut he has made just four feature film. Two of these are gay orientated masterpieces about his early life, The Long Day Closes and Distant Voices, Still Lives, a third was shot in the U.S.A.,based on a fine novel, The Neon Bible and the fourth a magnificent version of Edith Wharton’s novel, The House of Mirth. Davies has – shamefully for the British film industry – found it difficult to find work, despite being the greatest film maker working in the U.K. for decades. He has also written for radio and published a volume of autobiography. Happily he is again working, with a version of Terence Rattigan’s play The Deep Blue Sea in post-production. Choice: The Long Day Closes (1992), an affecting study of life in post war Britain depicted through the eyes and ears of a sensitive boy, Bud, finding release through cinema. The work of a poet and moviemaker, sans pareil.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne: Belgium 1951 and 1954. The Dardenne Brothers have directed eight feature films, plus a sequence in a compilation film, having previously concentrated on video and socio-political documentaries. They twice won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival and this year took the Grand Prix as best director with their new work, The Kid with a Bike (2011) not yet widely released. They work as co-writers, producers and directors steadily creating a body of work that is uniquely recognizable, concerned with the under classes in their home country, with youth, childhood, immigration and the grinding effects of poverty and neglect. Possibly their greatest influence has been Bresson, but they are more overtly political and might be described as making films with the same sense of commitment as Britain’s Ken Loach, although with greater skill and power. It’s almost impossible to select one of their four masterpieces: the intensely Bressonian The Child (shades of L’Argent), La Promesse, The Son or Rosetta. Thanks to the central performance by Olivier Gourmet, in a role written for him (for which he received the best actor award at Cannes) it is made easier. Choice: The Son (2002). A simple story of an instructor in woodwork, at a school for teenage apprentice. At first, he refuses to add a new boy to his class while obsessively following the youngster. We discover that the new pupil has just been released from detention for the murder of the teacher’s son. He takes the boy under his wing, but what is the motive? 31

As unexpected events tend to have a big impact in this, it has proven to be very difficult to predict the best time for buying or selling a stock.

Regardless what happened in the past century, major indices always managed to climb back to their previous highs within a couple of yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; time. So as long as you have long-term financial goals there is no reason to delay the start of a small monthly investment plan. Just make sure you have a solid investment strategy in place that properly diversifies your risks. Darika, My partner and I are an iconic couple, well known and respected in the community. We are both very social and love to entertain. While we each have a few friends that are mostly our own, we have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who we share. We are, and have been for more than ten years, a single unit, Siamese twins, The Borg. We are always invited and celebrated as a couple. The only things that do not overlap in our lives are our careers. Both of us seem to have come to the same conclusion simultaneously that we no longer want to be together. all of mine have simply died of old age, leaving me to fight only with their progeny through our lawyers over the spoils of their estates. I sense you want to end your partnership on a high note that will be a crowd pleaser and that the end result will be that you are invited to the same parties, dinners, and weekends at the beach. The best way to keep all of your friends is to involve them in the process. My suggestion is that you celebrate your separation (“divorce” is such an ugly word) as you would a wedding. This could even be fun. Make a list of all of the friends you mention, set a date for your “uncoupling” and send out invitations to an unmarriage ceremony. Darika would be willing to preside if you cannot find anyone else. This will cause an avalanche of telephone calls and emails (not because of Darika, of course), which will give you the opportunity to tell your friends that you both love them equally and that this is not necessarily a sad occasion. You will need a best man and a maid of honor to stand with you and organize both a bridal shower and a naughty bachelor party for each of you. All of your friends should be invited to all of these festive events, although you should not attend each other’s. Gifts are optional but should be encouraged. One of you is going to need a new blender, so why not? And a honeymoon? Darika fondly remembers her divorce trip with Louis Enrique Mendez de Hermossillo in 1975. It was my first big break-up. The two of us 36

went on a camping tip in a redwood forest of Northern California, and both had a great time. It cemented our friendship, and we went our separate ways remembering that the time we had together was priceless and that we would always be friends. He died of HIV in 1980 and I wore black for months. All of that said, Darika hopes you are prepared for the great possibility that you may, after all of this is behind you, find that you are still in love, and that you are open to the possibility that you might find your time apart unbearable. Fortunately, Darika’s editor does not mind runon sentences any more than she minds presiding at divorce ceremonies that ultimately bring two good people back together. (Sorry, I don’t do Bar Mizvahs.) If I were your mother I would tell you that big love transcends all differences. But why listen to me? Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station, Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize. awee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located. Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais, expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to

those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money! Within easy reach is Koh Samed for a Paradise island break. The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 50

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and hap-

pening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Shop â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;til you drop in modern air conditioned malls in Phuket Town as well as in the main beach resort of Patong Beach. The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel, called Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are situated on the exit road out of Paradise Complex, with most of the gay (friendly) hotels & guesthouses, and cabaret/go-go bars, a gay sauna, disco’s, go-go and host bars, restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, etc.

This last one has just finished a total makeover. The shows at the 3 go-go bars are mainly later in the evening and at the disco’s after midnight. A lot of effort is put in these shows, and most patrons bounce from one to the next. With jungle covered craggy hills, lush coconut plantations, and quiet beaches, balmy evenings Koh Samui is the perfect place to kick back, recharge and of course party a little. Samui is Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. For gay men the Emerald Green Mens Club in north Chaweng is the premier gay only destination for high quality, man 4 man massage and body treatments, they also provide their services in the spa at the super chic X2 Resort Samui, south of Lamai. 70

The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. Taxis are notoriously expensive but songtaew pick-up trucks are a cheap de facto public bus service. If you want a tour around Samui or go diving with a gay guide, contact Rainbow Scuba & Tour. When you feel hungry there is a huge variety of places to eat, from top of the bill restaurants to cheap eateries and Thai market stalls. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samuiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has two cabaret clubs, both in central Chaweng featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret above the entrance to Khun Chaweng Resort pumps out a classy, fast paced show while just past the north end Starbucks is Moulin Rouge, recently expanded and refurbished. Shows for both are daily, kick in about 8.30 pm with bar service and free entry. Over the hill in Lamai, opposite Holiday Park Resort is Sabai Bar a gay/mixed bar open daily from 5 pm. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Chaweng is a late hour party town. From midnight Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and

Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, mixed crowds, no frills bar service, daily until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro is Mekkala Men Spa an intimate massage business run by long established Samui resident, Khun AJ. A short distance further on in Mae Nam is gK Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spa close to Bandara Resort for a range of massage styles and treatments. Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. Gay Pattaya In the day time, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach is a short ride from Pattaya. Here you can relax in deckchairs or on loungers, and be waited on all day. It is, however, in the evening when the city comes truly alive. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. The Copa Showbar has an exciting, twice nightly, cabaret show and a unique erotic underwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”. The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightly is not to be missed. In Soi 2, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know.

The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex. Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of the many beer bars particularly notable are Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above. Finally, for the true Night Owls, Pattaya offers a selection of world class late night discos.
