Yokka Dok Reborn

“We started Yokka Dok on 9th April 2010 after moving to Chiang Mai from Bangkok,” says David, adding, “Originally, we weren’t exclusively a gay bar but have now decided to focus on establishing the premier gay cocktail bar in the centre of Chiang Mai as there are no other great venues in the Old Town for gay customers.”

Yokka Dok has a genuinely friendly atmosphere and they organise at least one special event each month. In the past year they have had plenty of practise; “We have held many friends’ birthday parties, with parties for Halloween, Loy Krathong, Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day and we are looking forward to Songran and our first anniversary parties in April.” That anniversary party promises to be a real hoot with a show, free BBQ and fun and games. David and Pui are the attractive couple at the helm of the newly reborn Yokka Dok Bar & Guesthouse in Chiang Mai. David 30 from Oxford, UK, was taking a few months break from his advertising career in London, travelling through South-East Asia. “On my first visit to Chiang Mai in 2008 I fell in love with the relaxed atmosphere and the Old Town,” says David, his smile never fading.

Pui, 24, from Korat, moved to Chiang Mai and started working with Nui at Friendship bar 5 years ago, which is where they first met. After 3 years in Chiang Mai, Pui moved back to Korat to help with the family business. A friend of Pui’s, worked at Maxis Bar in Bangkok and while he was visiting, they met again two years ago when David moved to Thailand permanently. Maxis Bar is their favourite bar in the Big Mango.

This progressive business has a cool sleek office and comfy cafe, currently exhibiting the eye popping artwork of Mr Gay Thailand. “Any gay visitor or expat can get information on hotels, restaurants, massage et al on our website but for a more personal service, we welcome people here for a chat and maybe a coffee and a sandwich,” smiles Mike.

Tonto’s experience in law and dealings with the land department serves well as Pattaya Hotmale also offers a full property listings service to sellers and landlords. All that local knowledge means that anyone looking for a place to stay should contact Mike, who is as charming as he is helpful. “I came here by accident!” he laughs, “I was due to land in Singapore but the airline switched me to Bangkok.” That was 10 years ago when Mike was living in Valencia, Spain. After that happy accident brought him to the land of smiles, Mike became a regular visitor, importing Thai handicrafts for European clients. When he met a representative of Hotmale franchises worldwide and discovered an opening in Pattaya, it was just a matter of time before he moved here full time in December 2009.

“It can be quite a culture shock, coming to Thailand,” confides Mike, “and I would advise anyone who is thinking of staying full time to come and stay for a few months first.” Relaxed and happy, Mike has gone native; loving the weather, culture, food and people and says that, “We can offer help to anyone who wants to escape the rat race.” His contacts have been developed quickly and Pattaya Hotmale stocks all the gay magazines. “I come from the small farming village of Hua Khuang in Chiang Mai- a special place to grow up, so very beautiful and all the people know one another and are very friendly. The most important parts of my childhood were school and to help my parents take care of the house and the land. The rest of my time, I spent doing all the things you usually do when you’re a child; I played in the fields with my friends, enjoying the fresh mountain air, surrounded by all the trees and nature. I did not want to be a farmer. I liked the idea of moving to the “big city” of Chiang Mai. I would be able to earn money and go to school. My parents knew this and a Thai couple that lived in the city who owned a Thai restaurant, so I asked for a job. They hired me and I lived at the restaurant, my first home-away-fromhome. I went to school and at night, I worked. I was very happy. This was my first paying job. I was twelve years old.

Soon, I was able to travel around Thailand and I experienced a completely new world. I met people from all over Thailand and from abroad. Living in the city, I made friends with gay people and I found that I enjoyed spending more time with boys. Feelings I had for boys were not the same as those I had for girls. My feelings for boys were sexual and exciting. Until I was eighteen, I had girlfriends. This was because boys were supposed to have girlfriends and I did what boys were doing. When I knew for sure I was gay, I stopped having girlfriends. Being gay is not usually discussed in Thai families. I’ve never spoken about it with mine but I think they know! They see that in my mid-twenties I’m not dating girls and that many of my friends are men. I think there’s an unspoken understanding and that my family is simply respecting my privacy. If they asked me, I would be honest with them. I am very comfortable with who I am as an adult gay man and though I enjoy my gay friends, I have several good straight friends, too. 13

I love flowers and always have. Since I was a little boy I enjoyed seeing and smelling flowers, holding them, working with them. In school, it was important to celebrate Teachers’ Day, children show respect to their teachers by giving flowers, and I wanted to make something very special. I was so excited that I could take my idea and make it real. I never forgot that experience. My desire to work with flowers began when my teacher helped me make my first arrangement. It’s difficult to explain why I started arranging flowers but there’s a need inside me to do it. I use flowers to express myself and describe my emotions. I love the feelings when I’m working with them. I’m happiest when I’m designing and I often lose track of time. It’s as though I’m in some completely different place. I love exotic flowers, the many colours, varieties, shapes and fragrances. I love going to the market to see what’s for sale. Foreigners I’ve met told me how expensive flowers are back home and I feel lucky that here in Thailand I can buy flowers without spending a lot.

I still have a full-time job. When customers hire me as a florist, my boss lets me change my work schedule. I’m really working hard to be to be a full time florist. Nobody taught me how to design and create flower arrangements. I just naturally understand flowers. Almost everything I know about flowers comes from inside me but I always need to learn more. I look for photographs of flower arrangements in magazines and books written about florists from all over the world. They have good photographs and I enjoy studying the pictures. I also like to watch other people when they work. When I see other flower arrangements, I try to understand how they are constructed. I find many ideas like this.

Different things inspire my work. The most important inspiration is my true love of flowers. I’m deeply moved by them. Each flower has its own shape and beauty. To be able to be creative with them, to have them in my hands, to feel them and understand them – these are very special opportunities for me. There is a well-known designer in Bangkok, Sakchai Guy and I admire his work. It would be wonderful to meet him and even work with him one day. I love arrangements that have elegant, simple lines, grace and balance. Also, a part of me loves designing showy and extravagant displays. Maybe because I’m gay! Certain flowers inspire me. Roses, lilies and orchids are my favourites- it’s difficult not to appreciate them and so many varieties grow in Thailand. Working with white and green flowers, either separately or together is very satisfying. There are so many tones in these two colours. I enjoy showing delicate subtleties in an arrangement. Many people ask me to design peacocks made of flowers. To make every peacock individual, I have fun placing them in different locations; at the top of stairs, in branches of trees, on top of furniture and then designing the tails – curving, bending, laid flat and straight, spreading out like a fan; and using different colours too. I would love to create one large arrangement of seven peacocks, each in a rainbow color, and have the tails curve and cross over each other.

A few businesses contract me to do flowers for their offices and almost all my work is done on site. Customers enjoy watching me work. It’s a very interesting process. They like seeing the arrangements created from start to finish, they appreciate how much time, and effort is required to complete their project. It’s very special that a boy who was twelve years old wanted to turn his dreams into reality and left home at that age to do it. I changed my family’s history. I changed what I might have been. I don’t want to sound boastful but I’m proud of what I’ve done so far. A business grows on its reputation and though I am still young and my business is small and very new, I’ve worked hard to create a good reputation for myself. True Love?

Part 3 – For better, for worse,

T h e n e x t d a y , Paa, our new bar boy from I s a a n , woke late. He had found out that you work the farang; get round as many as you could in an evening. Make them buy drinks for you and then accept the tips they gave you afterwards. His friend took him to Wat Chai, the local street market. There they got the meal of “Kow Pat Moo”, pork fried rice, and a bottle of water. The 26 Baht was cheap even for them and they also got a fillet of roasted chicken on a skewer each for 5 Baht. He had to watch every Satang as he only had about 50 Baht for the day. At the very back of his mind he hoped he could get a farang who would love him. He knew it would take time, but if he could find someone to share his heart, help him look after his family and provide a few Baht for his own living expenses, his life would be perfect. 16

Chris from Surbiton got up late and went into the market. He didn’t understand the Thai food and mistrusted the hygiene of the street sellers. He went to a local Western restaurant and for 145 Baht had a full English breakfast. He knew that in this environment it would be easy to fulfil his dreams and have as many guys as he could, in many different ways. In the evening, Chris had a nice dinner at a Western style café. The pork was especially tasty, and well worth the 195 Baht he paid for it. A glass of house red at 80 Baht washed it down well. He couldn’t help thinking just how cheap food was over in Thailand and just how far his money would go. Around 8 o’clock, Paa saw the farang from the night before and he became a little worried what might happen. The man beckoned him over and the two sat together. This time though he didn’t try to get his hand inside his underwear. In very basic Thai, he indicated there was a party the following day. Paa knew this. Loi Krathong is a big, important festival in the Thai calendar. He invited the boy to this. He said he would like to go to a party.

During the afternoon Chris had received an invitation to a beach party, the following day in honour of some Thai festival or another. He didn’t know or really care what, but it sounded like he should go. However he didn’t relish the thought of going alone. Then he remembered the new boy he had seen the night before. Maybe he would like to go with him? He hurried to the bar, and was relieved to see the boy still there. The farang must have said the word “parteeee” about a dozen times, as if showing off his prowess with the language. He said a lot of other things which Paa didn’t understand and by the end he was completely confused. He had no idea where they were going, what time or what they would be doing. He paid his bill and left, giving him 20 Baht for the short chat, but he did pay the 300 Baht bar fine to make sure he got him for the next day. He had 4 drinks bought for him, and after 4 beers, he was a little light headed, so sleep was easier. Chris had been practicing his Thai and thought he could do quite well. He asked the boy if he wanted to come to this beach party, whatever it was called. He then gave the boy 20 Baht for his time and told him he would pick him up at 10 pm the following evening. He stressed they were going to a party and the boy should wear something suitable. He himself had a new shirt for the event – he was very proud of it. Another good night he pondered as he poured a large brandy from the bottle he bought and went to sleep in his apartment feeling a little light headed. But would Paa remember? Wet & Wild Water Wars!

Songkran (Thai New Year) â&#x20AC;&#x153;love it or leave itâ&#x20AC;?! Every year April brings a time of joy to millions of Thaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s but it can be a time of dread for hundreds of expats, when to venture outdoors means an inevitable soaking! Songkran is an adventure that should experienced at least once- just let go of the inhibitions and be swept up in the exuberant joy of the biggest wet tee-shirt party in the world!. A lot of expats flee to other parts of southeast Asia but at the same time, thousands of Singaporeans, Taiwanese, Malaysians and travellers from Hong Kong come to Thailand to celebrate and party. 18

Songkran starts on April 13 every year and the wet fun lasts for 3 days. The first day is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao (the day after) and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok when the New Year begins. People from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time comes, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city, with the exception of a few tourist places, which are so crowded with partiers; the traf-

fic comes to a complete standstill. The Songkran tradition is recognized as the premier Buddhist festival of the year and is highly significant to Thai society. It provides an opportunity for family members to unite and express their respects to the elders by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and to present them with merit making gifts dedicated to their ancestors. In return, the elders wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity. 19

The most-talked about celebration takes place in the northern province of Chiang Mai where Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festival, to watch the Miss Songkran Contest and the beautiful parades. Bangkok goes crazy at Songkran. Two massively popular areas are Kao San Road, and Silom Road. Everyone is armed with the latest pump action water guns and walk the streets just soaking everyone else. Pickup trucks are jammed full of people surrounding a large water barrel and bowls of water are tossed onto happy victims. 20

Thousands of high school and university students party until early in the morning. Many venues close for the festival, but some of the venues actually set up parties for the revellers. On Silom Soi 4, hundreds gather for water throwing outside of Telephone Pub, with water, ice and talcum powder everywhere, it turns into a war zone. On Silom Soi 2/1, @ Richardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pub has a dry zone inside the Soi for partiers, setting up a beer garden and an outdoor Bar-B-Q. The whole of Silom from Rama IV Road to Naratiwat Road is closed to traffic in the late afternoon, as thousands gather to play, party, drink and listen to live bands.

The procession of the Thai-Lao Buddha image Luang Pho Phra Sai paraded around the northeastern city of Nong Khai. Join in blessing and being blessed by the governor and elderly people. Enjoy the sand chedi building contest, Miss Songkran procession, gay beauty contest, Mekong fish cooking contest, Nong Khai souvenir contest, local sports competition, swimming across the Mekong River, folk shows, and of course, the fun of being drenched with water on a hot sunny day. In Phuket you can see the procession of Phra Buddha Sihing, the Songkran parade and the Young Kids Songkran Contest, and then enjoy the water fun along Patong Beach. In Pattaya, locals come

together to make merit in several ways at this annual festival. They build chedis of sand, give water to monks and pay respect to elderly people. The fun part includes a Songkran procession, cultural shows, the Miss Songkran Beauty Contest and joyfully throwing water at one another along the beach at Pattaya; Pattaya starts Songkran after the rest of the country, usually 16-19 April. Some words of wisdom: join the fun, but dress accordingly. Leave all your valuables at home or be sure to wrap up anything you do take, wallet, money, id and mobile phone in a plastic bag, as you will be totally drenched. 21

Such acts of chivalry are unimaginable for travellers today, but unlike these late 19th century characters, we have the Internet and TripAdvisor to help ensure our dream holiday room does indeed have a view. It all comes down to money and on Samui that room with a view could cost you anything from Baht 600 to over Baht 50,000 + a night, reinforcing the adage ‘you get what you pay for’. 22

With over 425 hotels Samui offers an excellent range of accommodation options from tiny romantic coconut timber beach side bungalows to sumptuous famous brand name hotels, spacious private villas in the jungle or on the beach or back packer lodgings. Currently there is no gay only hotel on Samui still many hotels post their gay/lesbian friendly status on gay Internet sites, although curiously, not a whisper of this on their own websites or what they are offering gay guests. Of course, they just want customers be they gay, lesbian, straight, acrobats, opera singers, wedding parties or bird watchers. If you are looking for a gay only place to stay on Samui there are gay owner occupied B&B in a variety of convenient and attractive locations, representing excellent value.

The longest running gay only Samui B&B is the immaculate, charming Little Palace B&B in south Chaweng with a pristine pool in a beautiful garden, close to beach and restaurants. High up on the tropical jungle covered hill with a superb panoramic view of Chaweng is Mana’s Home B&B a large private home with two smart private en suite guest rooms, terrace garden and Jacuzzi. Wonderworld Samui B&B situated in a quiet, attractive suburban part of Chaweng amidst lush gardens and coconut palms offers a fully furnished en suite apartment with terrace all set in a private garden. Tropical Garden Lounge in Mae Nam is a resort and although not exclusively gay is gay owned with recently upgraded, romantic Samui style bungalows set into a large quiet, hillside garden with pool, restaurant and bar. Where to stay OUT in Pattaya

The Venue- Luxurious Rooms & Breathtaking Cabaret Ray Cornell and his partner, Darrell Bevers are the talented twosome at the helm of Jomtien’s spectacular, The Venue, where a lifetime’s experience in the hotel and show business have worked wonders. It is wise to turn up early to see big screen video funnies, enjoy ‘Happy Hour’ and to guarantee a seat, especially at weekends when there is often standing room only. It is not the lack of entrance fee or the regular bar prices that draw the crowds. It is the show. Styled by Ray and choreographed by the enviably talented Khun Noom, you will not see a better cabaret in Thailand. Slick and professional, it has everything from the intricate precision of ‘Waiting for our Favourite Son’ of the Will Rogers Follies to the outrageous, contemporary camp of Lady Gaga.

He fell in love with the country and in November 2008 he took over the Soho Bar & Guesthouse, perfectly placed on the Huay Kaew Road, opposite the Kad Suan Kaew shopping centre. “When I came here, I had to renovate the bar- everything was grey!” says this colourful Californian. Open at noon as a coffee shop, it morphs into a bar at 5 pm. The Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar Mohamad Jesr opened the first gay hotel in Chiang Mai. This sophisticated former architect/interior designer started his love affair with Chiang Mai as a tourist and revisited to collect artefacts for Saudi Arabian clients. A decade back he opened the Lotus Hotel, which is now an institution. He chose Chiang Mai because it has everything that he considers essential for a happy life. “Total nature is just 10 minutes away and the climate is the best in Thailand. The cost of living is low and northern Thais are not only very friendly but also they still respect foreigners,” he smiles, knowingly. “It is a safe city and being a student and arts centre, a sense of youthfulness, fun and joy has been created here.”

There are 16 rooms at The Lotus, with air-con, telephone, Wi-Fi, flat screen TV, DVD and safe. So, after several million years, and a trillion interviews, Larry King Live has died. We’ll maybe never know if Larry jumped CNN’s chat king throne or if falling ratings had him pushed. Either way, the network has made a fatal mistake in replacing him with a boorish Brit, Piers Morgan. The logic is clear: Morgan served his time as a gutter hack with the British tabloids. Eventually he was fired from the UK’s Mirror ‘paper in 2004 after publishing photographs allegedly showing Iraqi prisoners being abused by British Army soldiers- the pictures were crude fakes. Who better to interview crude fakes, invariably promoting their latest book/film/tv show?

Piers has made a name for himself as the sneeringly snide panelist on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and the US version of this reality talent show. Who better to interview those with little talent? Got to be bad old Piers in these post modern days of cynical irony. Right? Wrong.

Let’s hope that they are cast into the hell they believe in while we look away from the TV hell that Morgan will soon be leaving.

Last month’s issue had four groupings and 50 titles. And here are another four categories with 50 titles and a special devoted to a Thai ‘favourite. That’s all folks, except for the list of directors and a selection of their movies in May. After which we would welcome a few suggestions from you of films missed. Remember no shorts, porn or made for TV. – and quality not quantity.

MAN and BOY: Not an easy subject for films, especially in this increasingly intolerant age. But here are ten intelligent, sympathetic treatments of relationships between youngsters and adults, made with integrity, including several of the finest films anywhere in these lists.

PECULIARLY ENGLISH: La Vice Anglaise as the French would have it. The English have always had an ambiguous attitude to and fascination with homosexuality, not least because of the public school system. Certainly the inimitable blend of hypocrisy, persecution and suppression so beloved by the nation has helped produce some classic films, listed here and in other sections.

Not always specifically gay, but informed with a sensibility and with specific characters or a sub text that validates their inclusion. Just think of Dirk Bogarde in black leather lusting after a black clothed John Mills (as a priest in The Singer Not the Song and you’ll get the message. AND the 101st? It has to be a Thai film, surely. Sadly, some important films have been lost: so all information welcome about such movies as The Last Song (1985), Tortured Love (1987) and the revamping of Boys from the Band known as I Am a Man (‘also ’87). The last but not least title is simply a personal favourite – a version, updated, in mood to the classic Friends for Life noted in the Boys Will be Boys section. Love of Siam (2007) directed by Chakiat Sakveerakutkul is a gentle, heartbreaking story of two handsome youngsters, one gay one (perhaps) not. It is also a convincing portrait of Thai life and a wonderfully enjoyable movie. Next month’s focus: Directors.

Dear Darika: First of all it’s wonderful to have you back. I have missed reading your caustic wit for far too long. I am a middle-aged farang living in Hong Kong and have been a very frequent visitor to Thailand over the past 25 years clocking up more than 200 round trips. In spite of this, I cannot honestly say that I have any true Thai friends. I thought about this paradox the other day and put it down to incompatability - different languages and cultures as well as a massive difference in salaries/income. But at the same time I have discovered that Thai guys always have problems and when they think the time is right then they throw these problems at you. Invariably they are all about money. I take the view that we all have problems but we should take responsibility to solve those problems as mature individuals.

Have I been unlucky or do all farangs have a similar fate?

Perhaps your answer lies in the fact that you visited the Kingdom an average of eight times a year, presumably for the kind of sanook that is difficult to find in Hong Kong. Sadly, you are here only as a visitor. You come and you go, thus you attract people who can find nothing enduring in a relationship with you. You have become an “eating friend,” or someone who is not a friend at all, but comes in handy when a meal is available. Thais are not immune to broken hearts, and nobody wants a boyfriend who is not around for the bad times as well as the good unless, of course, they provide some alternate comfort during their absence. Darika cannot be sure where you are looking for friends during your visits, but suspects you may be spending your time in popular drinking establishments and places where towels are worn, which are also popular with Thais looking for the aforesaid meal. While you might find a rising star in the world of finance, medicine or rocket science in such places, they are probably not looking for you. Most such young men want someone who will be around for a while. Perhaps you should look for a position as a visiting lecturer at a prestigious university here which would give you access to a more affluent group of Thais.

While it might seem that Thai men consider you little more than a bag of money with legs, it is probably unfair to paint all of them with this brush. The Bangkok Gay Scene Bangkok has a plethora of gay venues unrivalled in Asia. Most Foreigners go to Suriwongse, Silom and along Sathorn Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Soi Duangthawee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located.

Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais, expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money!

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 54

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and per-

sonal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and yellow-metered taxis.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has a Cabaret obsession with four clubs featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret behind Khun Chaweng Resort is the largest, pumping out a classy show every night. Close by is Christy’s while 1 kilometre down Chaweng Beach Road is Starclub Cabaret, upstairs opposite Family Mart. In Lamai Beach on the main street beside Fusion Club is Zodiac Cabaret and Tina, a ladyboy icon on Samui. All shows kick in about 9.30 pm with bar service and free entry. A short distance along from Zodiac is recently opened Boys Bar Samui. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Samui is a late hour party town. From midnight, Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, no frills bar service and fun for mixed crowds until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro Cash and Carry, is Mekkala Spa an intimate massage business run by long establishes Samui resident, Khun AJ. Phuket is the quintessential tropical resort vacation, complete with exotic nightlife. There are international flights directly to the island, or fly easily and affordably from Bangkok or Pattaya Utapao. VIP buses are available between Phuket and Bangkok. There are virtually no metered taxis on the island so book ground transportation from the airport with you hotel. From Phuket airport to Patong in a private car direct to your hotel is 600 THB. You can find a shared minivan for less. Motorcycle rentals are inexpensive. In the daytime there are affordable busses. Most Tuk Tuks have a 200-baht minimum rate and motorcycle taxis start at 40 baht.

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds. Parasail, snorkel, play golf, ride an elephant, canoe in hidden caves, sightsee, take a Thai cooking school course, dance the night away, or just spend lazy days on the beach. Phuket is such a popular international tourist destination for people from all lifestyles; they are not necessarily all gay friendly, so use a gay tour company at your accommodation or use the OUT guide. Phuket Fantasea is a vast outdoor theatre with a huge cast. Voted “best attraction” for several years running by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the ticket price (up 80

to 2,250 including transportation and VIP seating) also includes a buffet dinner, cultural parade and street show. No visit to Thailand would be complete without a visit to a ladyboy show and in Phuket, Simon Cabaret, is recommended. One of the best views available from anywhere on Phuket is Promthep Cape near Nai Harn beach near Rawai beach, with a nearby restaurant for romantic sunsets. in Patong. Sharpen your bartering skills with street vendors or check out the higher end offerings at the very modern Jungceylon Mall with its spectacular outdoor dancing water shows. Only a 20baht bus ride (daytimes only) away is another modern shopping mall in Phuket Town, Central Festival. Phuket Town is very quaint and filled with restaurants, galleries, and more. It feels very unlike Thailand but more like a quaint little “Western” town. The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is on Patong Beach in the Paradise Complex, at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel. A mix of gay and straight hotels and guesthouses, gay saunas, bars, cabarets, massage parlours, and guy shows, the Paradise Complex is a great place to hang out at night. If you book a room within the Paradise Complex, ask in advance about noise levels—most can offer you a room that is not on a main Soi. Paradise Complex has two types of cabaret shows: “Go Go clubs” and Discos. Much effort goes into the shows, so patrons bounce from one to the next. The oldest Go Go show bars are My Way and Tangmo clubs with other cabaret variations at Mamasan’s.

Go Go bars Dempseys, Boys & Boys and James Dean Bar are notable. The popular outdoor upscale “Beer Bars” as always packed. The most popular are Connect, Sundowner, James Dean & Friends. Chic, a stylish place converted to an openair lounge (where BB Boys used to be) across from the lovely Orchid Lounge, draped with Orchids, offers coffee, and snacks. For late night entertainment, try Kiss Club and Boat Bar. Both are Discos and have lively outdoor patios and free cabaret shows. Boat Bar is as friendly as they come, the owner is the host with the most, and the shows are incredibly moving, energetic and inspiring. The Backstage and Knud’s are recommended and superior accommodation can be found at the beautifully refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse and Restaurant. The Gay Day Tour is great fun, every Saturday. Revellers convene at 11:00 a.m. at the Connect Guest House in the Paradise Complex and then go by minivan and then speedboat to a Koh Yao Yai private beach, equipped with private fresh water shower and toilet. The price, 1,850 THB includes, beach chairs and umbrellas, plenty of food and an open bar.
