Dear James, I have seen your first edition and my total disinterest in the content, which is ent irely irrelevant anyway, does not in any sense obstru ct my recognition that this is a thoroughly sensib le and responsible publication. A good job well don e. Whilst suggesting an ambiance of the slightly erotic and amusing you have skilfu lly managed to avoid even the faintest taint of sleaze , which is not easy to do with such a publication. You are to be heartily congratulated on a substanti al achievement and I wish you every possible success in the future. Bravo mon cher. BRAVO ! Dear OUT iT, Thanks for the new ma g; I’ve spun through ‘iT’ and glanced at the odd pa ge, but will make a po t of large tea and read it properly in the next few days. The layout look s superb! Can’t believe how many wond erful ads you’ve mana ged to get for the first editi on....that alone bodes well. AM (London)

A dazzling smile

Pub, Restaurant, Karaoke Delicious Thai , English and

by Koonmo

International food Favorites

Driving along the highway On a dull and boring day,

I came across two young men On a motor bike, who then

Looked me right in the eye

Asking permission to pass by.... Lost in thoughts, sad

I rushed and pushed ahead But my car stuttered, Resisted...

Scolding me, it said:

How can you ignore such an appeal?

I slammed a sudden brake with a squeal. They smiled. Oh! that dazzling smile, With a glitter in the eye, As they passed me by.

Beauty filled my sight

And my heart was filled with light. Charmed if I allow myself to be,

By a moment, worth an eternity. 10

OUT interiors with Vincent Chye the material guy... Vincent Chye lives with his Canadian partner and has been working in the interior fabric business for more than two decades. This 47-year-old Singaporean is a fizzing ball of creative energy that has been generating chic interior designs for expatriate homes in Thailand and styling hotel interiors that are as breathtaking as they are individual. His laser beam eyes dart about as he talks, scanning everything, missing nothing, picking up every influence and spotting any design faux pas that come within his range. However, to Vincent Chye this is second nature. He is always working but he would describe it as living.

12

Vincent Chye first came to Bangkok 12 years ago when he was offered a fabric consultancy post but he soon started his own business in this highly competitive field. “It wasn’t really a brave move. I enjoyed living in Thailand and identified a market amongst expats who needed a designer with whom they could easily communicate, he enthuses with a razor blade smile that never wanes. Soon he was offering a full interior design service for private homeowners, serviced apartments, high-end hotels and luxury resorts.

13

“My biggest problem is when the client gives no clear direction in the brief.”

His first major commission was for the prestigious Naladhu Hotel in the Maldives followed by his exemplary work in designing the interiors of the superior Saladaeng Colonnade serviced apartment building in Bangkok. The Saladaeng Colonnade is replete with an indoor atrium with shuttered windows, which featured throughout the project The rooms were distinctively decorated and fitted with antique wooden furniture and brass fittings that Vincent sourced from northern Thailand and Myanmar. The tiniest possible detail is important to this fastidious man for whom a soap dish or bath mat is an important part of the bigger design picture. Vincent’s vigour and passion indicate a carefree profession but not everything runs smooth. “My biggest problem is when the client gives no clear direction in the brief.” Vincent winces as he remembers other clients who interrupted the creative process believing themselves to be the designer! The key to his success has been to deliver a superlative product and remain within the constraints of the customers’ budget. Vincent has decided to focus on hotel styling in 2011. 14

15

“I created something which transports guests into another era, a time that has passed, but it has every modern convenience.”

“I love working for hotels! Not only do they offer me a blank canvass on which to paint but they always want me to come up with something new- they don’t want me to reproduce designs used by their competitors. It’s a wonderful challenge.” Vincent’s styling of the Burasari Hotel in Phuket’s Patong, included the dining room of the late and greatly infamous celebrity chef, Keith Floyd and demonstrates why this gifted man is in such high demand. Like all great talents, his work appears to be simple. But it is underscored by a complex sophistication and a keen understanding of colour and environmental sympathy.

16

Inspired and influenced by Vincente Wolf, who wowed New York with his spectacular concepts steeped in contemporary Italian themes, Vincent combines old and new with an enviable deftness. The superb Shanghi Mansion Hotel in Bangkok may be his greatest achievement to date. The charming colonial feel is something of which he is rightly proud. “I created something which transports guests into another era, a time that has passed, but it has every modern convenience.” He provides a onestop design service, designing the furniture, fabric, custom drapery and upholstery with sumptuous soft furnishings while installing the appropriate accessories, art and lighting to complete the look.

17

“Be bold!”

www.vincentchye.com

The art of the interior designer is a mystery to most but Vincent’s effervescent enthusiasm and gift for communication provides an easy guide to OUT iT readers who want to raise the domestic design bar in their own homes. “Be bold!” is the advice, “A Phuket villa is a great example. Glamorous Thai elegance starts with beautiful Thai architecture, teak wood, marble and limestone. The outdoors is lovely so link it with your indoor space by making enchanting courtyards connect to the rooms.

Make your interiors contemporary and comfortable with oversized furniture so you can laze and relax. You should include Thai accents and artefacts in big gallery style, on stands or as wall art. Use bold colours for fabrics, artwork or walls as the accent to pop up the simplicity of the interiors. Combine textures, different materials and colours like straw, bronze and antique gold, and add even more glamour with gold leaf and gorgeously smooth Thai silks. If you love cool, white interiors, pop it up with bold colours, textures and art and enjoy your home.” Patently, Vincent enjoys his life and work, he says, “Life is a lost gift if you have not lived as you wanted to live.” And who wouldn’t want to live in a world designed by the material guy who made great, Vincent Chye? 19

Phuket Full of Pride.

By Prawit Suma.

I

It all started in June 1969 in Greenwich Village, New York City at the Stonewall Inn, when gays fought against the police, in what became a violent demonstration for gay rights. The story of the Stonewall Riots quickly spread around the US and has been commemorated annually ever since. The first Gay Pride march was in New York. Now, forty years on Gay Pride is celebrated around the world in hundreds of cities including three in Thailand: Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket.

O n Phuket, 20 years ago there was only a discreet and quiet gay scene. There were but a few places in Phuket Town and Patong Beach for gay locals and visitors to meet in what was very private scene. When gay venues 20

started to open up in Paradise Soi that all started to change. With the very first Phuket Gay Festival and Parade in 1999 a new and significant cultural event for the island was born. It was a colourful and entertaining spectacle for tourists and locals, gay and straight alike as it made its way along Beach Road and eventually back to Paradise Soi. It has grown steadily each year until 2007, when for the first time, the focus of events took place on the beach at Loma Park in an attempt to involve the wider community. Opened by the Mayor of Patong it was the largest ever with an estimated 30,000 visitors but it was not an economic success. After an absence of 2 years, the festival returned to the traditional location in Paradise Soi in 2010.

The Phuket Pride Festival this year will be between 23-26 February. The announcement of all activities and programs will be made on the evening of Tuesday February 22 at Jungceylon Patong along with fantastic shows on stage. Get to the pre-opening White Party on Wednesday February 23 in Paradise Soi, featuring sensational shows from all the bars if you want to show your true colours! On the 24th, you can see your favourite sexy team at the beach volleyball tournament during the day, and then in the evening, see the grand opening of Phuket Pride Festival in Paradise Soi. The celebration will include spectacular fireworks, shows from all the bars and late night street party. 21

Stonewall may be an age and a world away and though few present here will remember how and where it began maybe it will soon become more significant. There is a burgeoning gay rights movement in Thailand, seeking full equality under the law. The Rainbow Sky group may do well to associate themselves more with Pride and harness the energy of the nation’s young gays. Set in the tropical paradise of Phuket, this fabulous festival is always a magnet for visitors so you should book your accommodation earlyjust look at OUT iT’s map in the guide section and make your choice.

On Friday February 25, you can choose to either cheer your favourite team at the beach volleyball final or join the Connect gay day tour to Yao Yai Island. In the evening, there is the glittering Awards Night Party for all the 22

beach volleyball winners. Later, you can enjoy the street party with various fun and games from different bars. The Grand Parade will be on Saturday 26 February from 5 pm. A host of gorgeous guys in outrageous costumes and full of pride will progress from the Duang Jitt Resort at the southern end of Patong Beach, along the Beach Road as far as the football stadium by the beach at Loma Park and then move back to Paradise Soi. The climax will be a stunning Street Dance display and then the closing party for Pride Festival. 23

Diamonds are forever but bling will do in the meantime

Chaweng, so if we start at the north end of Chaweng Beach Road, behind Khun Chaweng Resort and the Mad Greek restaurant, just up from Starbucks & Pizza Hut, is Starz Cabaret the largest show club pumping out a classy high-energy show.

By Bruce and Mark

F

For most international visitors their first contact with the show girls/boys will be on Chaweng Beach Road and

Samui has a Cabaret obsession, with four clubs featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. It’s all go with high camp, glittering, fast paced, sheer extravagance of feathers, feathers and more feathers, diamantés, exotic costumes, lethal high heels, punishing dance routines and a varying range of lip-sync skills. These shows are the start of a fun night out. Thai cabarets attract an audience of Thais and foreigners, Thai and international gay guys, families and boy/girl couples who just love the glamorous, svelte, leggy lady boys and cute gay boy performers. If you have an observant eye, watching the cabaret audience may be so amusing it could eclipse the show. 24

main street Lamai, where about 8 o’clock every night some of the performers, in full glamour and glitter costume also boys in form hugging shorts leaving nothing to the imagination, emerge to tout for guests to their shows.

Glamour and bling is adored in Thailand and cabaret certainly does not hold back on this. In each cabaret there is a glossy line up of lip-synched: Madonna, Shirley Bassey, numbers from “Cabaret”, Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Britney Spears, Beyonce, the requisite glittering gold traditional Thai dance number and certainly, there will be cheeky, crude and outright rude skits.

International gay men, familiar with western gay drag and female impersonators, where an acerbic style and striving for individuality is the usual fare, could find Thai cabaret a tad superficial, more gush than original. But this could be misreading Thai culture where plush and grandeur are seen as content to be valued. Thai cabaret is usually a collection of faithful and glamorous reproductions of big name western performers, though with a bit more gush than the original.

Cabaret divas in Thailand tend to be Katoey, more commonly known as ladyboys and of course gay Thai boys. Most Katoey in Thailand work in shops, restaurants, beauty salons or commerce but a smaller number work in the entertainment industry where some have become extremely successful. Much as the martial art, Muay Thai can be a short cut to riches for Thai village boys, for others, cabaret can be an escape from the poverty and hardship of rural life in Thailand. The lure of the glamour of the stage can be an irresistible opiate for young males who train strenuously to be part of the shows each hoping to grasp fame. Three of the Samui cabaret shows are in

About 150 meters back down the road is Christies the first cabaret show on Samui whose highly creative programme of routines were copied by wave after wave of younger Katoey on Samui, modified and turned into signature acts in other shows. A kilometre further down the road in south Chaweng is Starclub Cabaret upstairs opposite Family Mart, presenting three 40-minute shows each night with a different underlying story in each one. If you are in Lamai Beach, on the main street beside Fusion Club is Zodiac Cabaret where Tina, a ladyboy icon on Samui, does a powerful Tina Turner routine and more. Samui cabarets shows generally kick in about 8 pm nightly, provide bar service and free entry. As the Thai custom goes, the dancers will be thrilled if you leave a tip with one of them, especially if you have taken photos of their show. For cabaret locations check the Samui maps and venues in this publication.

My Funny

True Love?

Valentine

Part 1 – For richer, for poorer.

Isaan is an area in Thailand, to the North East of the country. It is very poor and mainly agricultural. Life there depends completely on the success of the crops. Children have a hard time, working from a very young age on the farm, going to school when the crops permit, and the family finances allow. Narongrit Boonfrveng was born into this environment. Like most Thai children, he was given a nickname or short name at birth. Narongrit would be simply known as Paa. Surbiton is a small suburb, South of London. It is very affluent and the residents boast a nice private golf course and

26

drive luxury cars. Many of the people there are retired, but the ones who do work have jobs such as stockbrokers, or they own their own businesses. Their children all go to fee-paying Public Schools. Whichever way you look at it, they are among the richest people in England. Chris had been born into this privileged class and had lived in Surbiton for the last 30 years. Paa was an adorable boy. By the time he was 22, he had been working full time on the farm for over 10 years. He had never had a day off in his life and all he knew was work. Â

27

One of his friends had just started working as a waiter in Pattaya, and said the bar was looking for help. The lad had just sent 5,000 Baht home to his own family and there would be a great opportunity for Paa to do the same. He needed little extra incentive. If he could get a job, earn enough for him to be comfortable, and send money home to look after his family, his life would be good. If he could also find love, it would be perfect. And Pattaya promised just that. Chris, aged 53, had just retired from work. Due to the recession in England, his company had laid him off. Despite providing a generous golden handshake, he knew he had to live frugally if he was to eke out the £50,000 until his private pension started. The one thing he loved in life was his annual holiday to Pattaya. The warm climate, golden beaches, easy lifestyle, and above all gay sex, meant it was a haven for him. Now he decided if he was to have any chance of making it until his pension came through, he would retire to Pattaya. If he could eke out his money, his life would be good. If he could have his share of cheap boys without a relationship, it would be perfect. And Pattaya promised just that. Paa got the cramped bus from Isaan and came to Pattaya. It’s a gruelling, hot journey; first from his village to Si Saket, then another bus to Bangkok, and finally a third to Pattaya. He arrived after almost 19 hours of travelling to be met at the bus station by his friend, Ton. Boys earn 2,000 Baht a month and have to pay fees from that. The bar boys have to work from 4 pm through until 2 am the following day; every day; 7 days a week; with two free days a month only. 28

After deductions, he’s working for 1,200 Baht a month – 28, 10-hour days in an average month. You can do the sums yourself. Chris’s chauffeur driven car took him to Heathrow. Then he flew Evergreen class on Eva Air to Bangkok, and loved the extra legroom and upgraded service this premium class bought him. He landed at Bangkok airport and travelled in his air-conditioned taxi to Pattaya. The stylish apartment was already booked and he arrived there after a pleasant 19hour journey. The £50,000 handshake had to last 18 months; that was a mere 140,000 Baht a month. You can do the sums yourself. A waiter’s job is very common in Pattaya; you can see literally hundreds of them as you walk around the town. It was however, totally unlike anything Paa had ever done before. Sure, he was a waiter, serving drinks in a bar; but this was a gay, boy bar, in a gay district of Pattaya. The waiters are expected to give out more than just drinks. If a tourist wants sex with a boy, all he has to do is pay the bar fine (around 300 Baht, of which boys get 50 Baht) and the two of them would go away. The boy is taken to a room and used by the farang. For this, the men pay anywhere between 500 and 1,000 Baht direct to the boy. This is how the boys make their money – as cheap prostitutes for rich men. And Paa, unknowingly and unwittingly had just joined their ranks. All Paa wanted was true love. All he knew was that here, in Pattaya, he could find it.

Our stockbroker had been to Pattaya many times before and knew the ropes. Go to a bar, see a cute lad you like, get chatting to him and buy him a drink. If the two of you clicked, you would pay the bar fine, a mere £6 for an Englishman and take the boy off. Then for anywhere between £10 and £20, you could spend from an hour to all night with the boy, and use him any way you wanted. Chris just loved the cheap sex he could get here. The one thing Chris shied away from was a steady boyfriend. He had seen too many Westerners have their hearts ripped out before. They would take a boy off, the boy would profess undying love and the two would settle down. After a while, disillusionment would set in; the relationship would deteriorate; money would become the driving force and eventually another Westerner would have their heart broken. Chris had seen them all. He wouldn’t make the same mistake. His own heart was made of granite and couldn’t be swayed. Or could it? See next month’s OUT iT for more …

My jealous

HEART

By Michael White

We’re urged not to be covetous, though I don’t feel that envy is a sin: who doesn’t fancy looking like Brad Pitt, or George Clooney ten years ago? Not to mention those bank accounts. Such fun…..

‘phone rings for the sixth time and your pal goes sotto voce or leaves the room to take the call, leaving you pacing the floor like an expectant father think again about your stay.

Jealousy – second cousin to envy – is altogether a different, destructive matter and a familiar sensation, especially for those who live in Thailand. So envy that farang his good luck in having the ‘perfect partner, but beware the possible heartache if the same lad is ‘attached’ to you.

If there’s a party to which you’re not invited and he returns home with the dawn chorus and your first words are, “Where the hell have you been, I haven’t slept a wink”, rather than “Had a good time, darling?”, think harder still.

There are many superficial reasons why Thailand does not suit people: the spicy food, the heat of March, April, May, the irritations of Thai time etc. There may be deeper reasons: that impatient western nature, your parsimony, your anti-monarchist views, even a lack of cash in these straightened times. Work them through, adapt or leave. But be warned….. If you are the zealously jealous type, if what is, to the average person, a rheumatic twinge is for you osteo-arthritis, Thailand may not be your personal paradise. If you panic when that fancy 30

envy verb ‘en.vi’ to wish that you had something that another person has jealousy noun ‘dʒel.ə.si’ Suspicion of possible rivalry, mistrust of the faithfulness of a person.

If you find a pair of fancy-labelled boxers in the wash and can’t, won’t, don’t believe they are a market copy, rather than yesterday’s leftovers, question your reasoning. If he seems to have more ‘friends’ than the Vanderbilt’s 400 and you can’t stand the ‘neglect’, consider an Eva Air flight option. If in a moment of temptation, passing a massage shop, you pop in, reveal your all and emerge smiling, but are consumed with anger at the thought of him doing something similar, rationalise that selfishness.

are little more significant than two lads strolling the soi, arms linked. We cannot expect to be the centre of the universe, nor carry our emotional baggage as close to us as a real Louis Vuitton shoulder bag. It’s pointless to question the fidelity of a loved one, without questioning our own. If you are unable to relax, to offer a degree of freedom and space along with friendship, then your relationship will surely falter. In which case there’s always Eva Air.

If it is o.k. for you to drool over number 13 at a bar, but you fume when the smile you adore gets directed at a young farang a few seats away, pause a while and think- what’s sauce for goose…. Just remember that Thailand – or the part which most of us inhabit – is casual, laid back. Friends are easily made and lost just as rapidly. Sex is a service like many others, handed to you on a plate like a dish of Tom Yam Gung. Relationships with other Thais, which seem worrisome, 31

Lek’s Queer Eye Recently, to my chagrin, I noticed that my eyeglasses were in need of repair. As the lenses were the expensive, continuous progressive style, I was not anxious to have new ones made and hoped a repair could be effected. I duly visited a local branch of a well-known optical emporium and presented my damaged frames to the young lady behind the counter. She informed me that the glasses couldn’t be repaired, but that they could put my lenses in a new frame. After I chose a frame, she handed it to the optometrist so he could fit my lenses. I sat down near where he was working to wait. He was quite handsome, had a cute, round face, longish hair and sported a fit, slim body. Attired in his white, professional, smock, he made an impressive appearance. He looked up at me, smiled and said “Oh, handsome man. Do you live alone or do you have a boyfriend?” I responded by asking him how he knew I was gay. As far as I know, I don’t have G-A-Y scrawled across my forehead. “Oh, I can tell from your eye,” he replied. There you have it. I guess there’s a “gay eye.” He called me over to where he was working on my spectacles. He said, “I’m giving you a nice discount on the frames. Maybe, you can take me to dinner.” I was a bit nonplussed and, simultaneously, flattered. Although, my main concern at that moment was getting my glasses repaired, I always perk up when I meet a cute young man. I told 32

him that dinner was definite possibility; we could have it at my house. At that point, my optical friend whipped out his mobile to show me some pictures. The first few were G-rated photos of him in various poses. We progressed to a shot of someone’s impressively sized male organ, for which he claimed ownership. Finally, there was a pornographic shot of a couple engaged in coitus. My new friend claimed he was the “top” in that scenario, but quickly assured me that he could assume either role. I guess he got off from showing his assets, because before I knew it, he grabbed my hand and placed it on his crotch and his rock hard erection. My new friend suggested that I go into the back room for an “examination.” He closed the door, placed me in the chair and started unbuttoning my pants. It seemed a bit odd as this was nowhere near my eyes. What the heck, I thought. I went with the flow. As an older expat, living in Thailand, it was nice to be the one pursued for a change. “Lek” (which means small in Thai) was certainly not small where it counts. After we finished our extracurricular activities, Lek proceeded to finish repairing my glasses. When I took out my wallet, to pay, he waved his hand and said, “No charge for handsome man.” I repaid him by inviting him out to a nice restaurant for dinner and, then, “dessert,” at my home. Now, I see Lek on a regular basis. Not only do we have great sex, but also I’ve grown quite fond of him; and as a bonus, I have my own personal optometrist.

Smart Gay Apps from Purple Dragon Best known as Asia’s oldest, largest gay tour company, Bangkok’s Purple Dragon is developing the first gay Asian “app” for the iPhone and other smart devices. Their app will help users find businesses by country, city, and category. In some cases users will be able to find nearby businesses on a satellite map that shows the best route and taxi directions in the local language. While most of the businesses currently listed are tourism and nightlife venues, Purple Dragon also encourages art galleries, architects, tattoo artists, veterinarians, tailor shops, plastic surgeons, and virtually any other kind of gay-owned enterprise to become a part of the app. The project’s website, http://www.gayasiaapp.com, presents a detailed “tour” of the app and instructions to join. Some of the information is available in Thai, Vietnamese, Khmer, Mandarin, Japanese or Korean. However, the completed app will initially be offered in English and can be downloaded free.

“Size matters, at least to your malign heroine Suzy Size.” The handsome 255 pages throb with authenticity but Hans is modest: “I was extremely surprised when renowned publisher Marshall Cavendish approached me for a book.

In these digital days of websites, i-apps, tablets and android ‘phones, it is reassuring to know that the good, old fashioned book is still being produced. Though certainly not old fashioned, no gay bookshelf should be without the eminently readable, ‘Wanderlust in Gay Asia- Exotic Encounters and Erotic Escapades’. These are the intrepid adventures of Suzy Size, aka Hans Fritschi.

“I love to leave Jomtien Beach and Pattaya to go on one of my many trips around the world, but always gladly return,” says Suzy. The trips recorded here take in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Macau, Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, India, ChiHans or Suzy

They must have mistaken me for Suzy Size. What a blunder!” The cultural sensitivity in all the stories are a tribute to the man who says, “I guess, I am on an Eternal Gay Friendship Tour.” ‘Wanderlust in Gay Asia’ is available at Cutey Beauty in Bangkok at 550 THB, Pattaya: Street Life, Panorama, Funny Boys, D.D. na, Laos, Turkey and Sri Lanka but if all that sounds tiring, don’t worry, Suzy has done all the leg work for you. Hidden amongst the humour are nuggets of invaluable information that make this book a terrific gay guide that is an easy read, well written. “I am a shy guy, but the Suzy Size in me is not. She is shrill, flamboyant and at times, quite dumb and definitely embarrassing. She takes all the limelight and nobody takes notice of me. If she was not there to shield me anyhow, I would have to invent her,” Swiss born, Hans Fritschi told OUT iT in an exclusive interview. A wry smile plays about the author’s lips, “To travel constantly around the world, always in search of male beauty, is a dream profession. It took me quite some time and some arm-twisting till I got that position.

Reflections in a Golden Eye Is this the screen’s best ever depiction of a gay character?

By Brian Baxter

OUT at the movies

But so moving and intense is Brando’s performance during the whole film that the preposterous scene becomes tragic: his portrait of the heavy set, anguished, closeted army office, Major Pendleton, is arguably the truest and most heart felt depiction of a ‘gay’ character in cinema history. Brando offers us an uninhibitedly over the top portrayal of a man who through circumstances of time and place and his own weakness in coming to terms with his own sexuality represents an era and a situation that resonates deeply. Also a situation made, still has a pitiable validity for many people in many parts of the world, even in 2011. Reflections in a Golden Eye is John Huston’s full blooded, hot house transcription to the screen of Carson McCullers’ best work: a short novel, set on an army camp circa the early 1950s, where we learn at the opening in a quote direct from the book, ‘A murder was committed’.

There is a scene in this fascinating movie where Marlon Brando looks in a mirror and frantically daubs face cream on to his ageing skin. He has just spotted the young soldier he lusts after heading towards his house and mistakenly fantasizes that he is coming – during the night – to visit him. You don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Cynically, an audience might scream, “Too little, too late Marlon”. The story is simple: in this enclosed Southern community, called Fort, enlisted men go about their training and duties, stationed in barracks. Officers and their wives live cosseted lives in nearby houses. The Major and his wife (a wonderfully blowsy Elizabeth Taylor) is one such couple, occupying separate bedrooms. She consoles herself with the attentions of another officer (memorable Brian Keith), whose wife (Julie Harris) is mentally unstable and is tended by a fey Filipino houseboy (dancer Zorro David). Butch Brando

McCullers –one of the great gothic Southern writers (and a friend of Tennessee Williams who urged her to turn her novel Member of the Wedding into a play, thus ensuring her fame and fortune) dealt, like her mentor, with heightened emotions. In her other plays, her stories and few novels she puts characters into intense situations. Reflections works like a discordant string quartet, with the soldier hovering over the stage like silent angel of death. Liz ‘n’ Marlon This brave movie was ahead of its time, daring to recreate on screen a work of extreme emotions. Unsurprisingly it was not a commercial success and Huston’s filming of it with an overall golden glow was hooted off the screen at early previews in the U.S.A., with the film re-released in a conventional colour process. Brando dominates the movie, as he broodingly follows the handsome soldier (Robert Forster in a screen debut), picking up a sweet wrapper carelessly discarded and smoothing it to be kept in his little box of hidden treasures to be drooled over in his private study. Robert Forster

One day he spies the boy riding the wife’s horse in the woods – bareback in both senses of the words – and later thrashes the horse in his frustration, only to be horse whipped by Taylor in return. Heady stuff, with more to follow. Brando has several great scenes, but none finer than his monologue as he heartbrokenly contemplates the life of the enlisted soldier, their camaraderie and Spartan lives and rules, whilst his wife and her lover listen in astonishment and incomprehension. But McCullers knew all about heartbreak and loneliness (read her seven page short story The Jockey for confirmation of that) and exposed its rawness in every work. She was bi-sexual, a heavy drinker and later suffered from a debilitating illness. Her husband committed suicide and she wrote unfeelingly in the introduction to her play The Square Root of Wonderful that this was partly because of her success as a writer compared with his. There was nothing ordinary about Carson and it shows on every page. And the world’s she created like the Southern Fort are not ‘ordinary’, from the wife who cuts off her nipples in despair to the officer so besotted by an enlisted man that he actually believes his dreams – with disastrous results. At the heart of the work is a deep compassion for the rejected gay, there is no element of ridicule in the portrait of the officer. It’s worth recalling that the title of another of her books was The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. (This film is one of those in the forthcoming compilation by Out’s editorial team: 101 Essential Gay Movies, appearing in the March and April issues). 37

An open letter... D OUT on tv

This plea for more of the same is not made on account of the technical excellence of the product. The editing was superbly cut to point both dramatic and comedic effect, often snapping to the sexily funky soundtrack. The glossy sheen given to this essentially low budget show (artists’ contracts aside) elevated the fictional world of law firm, Crane, Poole and Schmidt to a stratospheric level not seen since the Dallas/Dynasty days of the eighties. The superbly sophisticated set designs, had an air of authenticity that sucked incredulity from the most sceptical eye balls.

Dear Star World (True Visions Channel 54), As you know, this column is dedicated to clearing the schedules of re-runs but once in a pink moon, there is an exception. One show that ran for five seasons between 2004 and 2008, earning 22 Emmy nominations and four for Golden Globes, deserves to be repeated ad infinitum. Probably the most entertaining, intelligent and thought provoking drama that has emerged from the fog of political correctness and rancid reality romps during the last decade of TV production: Boston Legal. ing! Disgusting!’) or Shelley Berman as Judge Robert Sanders (‘No poopy-cock in my court!’)?

And the roll call of luminaries that turned up to play themselves: Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, Wes Craven, Larry King and even Al Sharpton as well as regular guest stars Rupert Everett, Tom Selleck, George Segal, Robert Wagner, Scott Bakula, Heather Locklear and Michael J Fox- none of these are the reason for this repeat request. Then there was all the sex. Mark Valley as Brad Chase and Justin Mentell as Garret Wells caused more than a little loin stirring. There was all the glamour; headed up by the remarkably preserved Candice Bergen and a bevy of beauties in supporting roles. And the evil. Serial killers played by Golden Girl, Betty White and gay star Leslie Jordan were unlikely but inspired choices and Lincoln Meyer made ice seem warm. Gary Anthony Williams as Clarence Bell was everyone’s favourite cross dresser and there was a glorious glut of gay storylines but none of this is why you should air Boston Legal again.

Boston Legal had a regular cast of sitting judges that made Judy lack punch. This eccentric band of arbiters was a joy. Who can forget the late, great, Henry Gibson as Judge Clark Brown (‘ShockMark Valley

Justin Mentell

Christian Clemenson

Christian Clemenson as Jerry Espenson, suffering from Asperger’s was the socially inept but legally brilliant soul who caused tears of mirth and tears of tragedy in equal measure. James Spader was the dedicated Democrat lawyer who pounced on every opportunity to defend the underdog or savage US foreign policy under George Dubbya. William Shatner played Denny Crane, egoistical maniac, gun slinging, gung ho homophobe and rabid Republican- a man you hate to love. The show regularly broke the fourth wall with characters who realised they were in a TV fiction where the plotlines were as outrageous as Lady Gaga on acid. But none of that has provoked this request for more. 39

Why MUST you screen it all again? Simple. Boston Legal was one long elegy, a symphony of celebration that championed something noble, something almost forgotten, something overlooked; the friendship between men. Denny and Alan were avowed hets who loved to be

It is a bond that should be cherished and nurtured by guys everywhere. Straight Denny and Alan shared a cigar and whiskey at the close of every episode and put their world to rights. They had sleepovers. They told each other, ‘I love you.’ They even got married in the last

show- to each other! That rare friendship between men has not been better portrayed since Shakespeare’s Mark Anthony loved Caesar. Let’s see it all again.

Q: I am a straight white male, fully shaved except eyebrows. I love to show it off. I’d like to go to a gay bathhouse with my girlfriend, who likes to show too. Is that possible? We’re both gayfriendly, including touching anywhere. – Shavefetish A: At first Darika was mortified when she read your letter. After further contemplation, however, I would love to know when and where you plan this adventure so I can be there to witness it myself. The thought of 100 screaming queens escaping from a darkened maze with towels flapping behind them is indeed exhilarating. “Gay-friendly” means “tolerant.” I do not find the idea of being molested by a shaven heterosexual and/or a naked female to be particularly tolerant of my pursuit to indulge in same-sex pleasures in a steam room. Your visit would not likely engender the tolerance of those who you touch.

40

Denny & Allan

Darika knows of only one successful female foray into the one of the few places gay men still have entirely to themselves. Years ago, a gay friend was able to smuggle his skinny Japanese woman friend into Babylon. She wore a robe and kept her hands to herself and was thoroughly bored by the entire episode. Unless your girlfriend is Bette Midler, she will probably not get any farther past the front than Darika could unless she is flatchested and can slip out of her clothes and into a towel without anyone detecting that she lacks a piece of equipment that is essential to enjoying a visit to a bath house. Unless you go alone, which would make you a gay-touching bisexual exhibitionist, your fantasy is not particularly practical. It might be better for the two of you to rent a gay porno movie, stay at home, and show off to each other. Auntie Darika answers your questions about love and life. OUT in Bangkok B

Bangkok is the frenzied hub of Thailand. The Skytrain and MRT (subway) have made it much easier to get around, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

Get to Chatuchak Weekend Market by catching the Skytrain. Mor Chit bus terminal is nearby. Mah Boon Krong (MBK to locals -take Skytrain to National Stadium) is the largest shopping center in the district and is a transit/orientation point. Keen shoppers head for the area around Siam Square. Other malls include Siam Center, Siam Discovery Center, Centerpoint and the World Trade Center. A walk away from the latter stands Panthip Plaza, possibly the best place to get deals on computers in Southeast Asia. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers more shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists. 44

Recommended Attractions: • Jim Thompson’s Houses • National Museum/Wang Na Palace with its excellent exhibits for a slice of Thai history • Wat Arun for breathtaking views of Bangkok and Chayo Phraya River • Grand Palace/Wat Phra Kaew with its amazing Emerald Buddha, colourful mosaics and glittering spires • Wat Pho, Bangkok’s oldest temple and home of the Reclining Buddha • Wat Traimitr (Golden Buddha) Chatuchak Park Weekend Market, the most famous of Bangkok’s markets, where you can buy almost anything at amazing prices if you bargain Lumpini Park to relax and take a break from the chaos of Bangkok and to view the weightlifters in the early morning

The Bangkok Gay Scene Bangkok has a plethora of gay venues unrivalled in Asia. Most Foreigners go to Suriwongse, Silom and along Sathorn Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station, Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize. Disco Disco is another party palace. Between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage salons. Soi Duangthawee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located.

46

Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais, expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money!

VICTORY MONUMENT

OUT in Chiang Mai C

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations- a feature that attracts Thais and foreign tourists, especially for the February Flower Festival, Songkran in April, Loy Krathong in November and New Year revellers. Great retail therapy is available at Central Airport Plaza and the walking street market on the Rachamadoen Road, every Sunday.

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find 54

The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate

outside of Bangkok and a hip and happening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and Souper-Steak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham.

Other things to see and do Chiang Mai has hundreds of ornate temples with the mountaintop Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep being the most famous as a place of pilgrimage and for spectacular views of the city and the surrounding countryside and also Pu Ping Palace, a Royal retreat with beautiful gardens. A couple of hours away is Doi Internon, the highest Chedis in the Kingdom. Two hours north of Chiang Mai is the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet and is Chiang Rai province’s most popular attraction. Elephant rides and white water rafting are available to the adventurous and Chiang Mai has a large zoo, famous for its pandas and fantastic marine exhibits. A few kilometres out of the city in the Hang Dong area is Ban Tawii, replete with hundreds of outlets selling handicrafts and furniture at wholesale prices.

On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and yellow-metered taxis.

OUT in Koh Samui W

With jungle covered craggy hills, lush coconut plantations, and quiet beaches, balmy evenings Koh Samui is the perfect place to kick back, recharge and of course party a little. Samui is Thailand’s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. For gay men the Emerald Green Mens Club in north Chaweng is the premier gay only destination for high quality, man 4 man massage and body treatments, they also provide their services in the spa at the super chic X2 Resort Samui, south of Lamai. The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. Taxis are notoriously expensive but songtaew pick-up trucks are a cheap de facto public bus service. If you want 62

a tour around Samui or go diving with a gay guide, contact Rainbow Scuba & Tour. No gay beach on Samui but there is plenty of eye candy on the many idyllic beaches around the island. When you feel hungry there is a huge variety of places to eat, from top of the bill restaurants to cheap eateries and Thai market stalls. Check out eating options in OUT Magazine or on the website at the end of this article or cruise the Internet; your hotel will have a copy of the Samui dining guide.

The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui massage for girls, boys and transgendered customers. Samui has a Cabaret obsession with four clubs featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret behind Khun Chaweng Resort is the largest, pumping out a classy show every night. Close by is Christy’s while 1 kilometre down Chaweng Beach Road is Starclub Cabaret, upstairs opposite Family Mart. In Lamai Beach on the main street beside Fusion Club is Zodiac Cabaret and Tina, a ladyboy icon on Samui. All shows kick in about 9.30 pm with bar service and free entry. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Samui is a late hour party town. From midnight, Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, no frills bar service and fun for mixed crowds until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro Cash and Carry, in a housing estate is Mekkala Spa a small massage business in a private house while over the hill in Lamai is Boys Bar Samui with take away staff. Pick up a copy of OUT Magazine at any gay venue for an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings.

There are no gay hotels on Samui. There are a wide range of accommodation options from famous brand name hotels through to exclusive private villas or simple, Samui style bungalows and good quality, gay only, owner occupied B&Bsomething for all needs. Check out the options on the website below or search the Internet. OUT in Pattaya P

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets, from local street stalls, to five star gourmet haut cuisine. Water sports include diving, jet skiing and parasailing. Try Go-karting or bungee jumping or a massage at one of the many salons. There are many gyms and exercise facilities.

Just some sample highlights around Pattaya; • P attaya Elephant Village has guided tours through the jungle on elephant back, ox cart, rafting, and much more. • Nong Nooch Tropical Garden has beautiful landscaped gardens and amazing panoramas. Don’t miss the French Garden and Orchid display. Also daily cultural and elephant shows as well as a charming zoo at this “Chelsea Flower Show” winning Garden. • Tiffany’s and Alcazar Ladyboy cabaret shows, both on second road, are a feast of glamour and glitz. Tiffany’s in particular is energetic and tours the world with its spectacular show. • The crystal clear waters of Koh Larn, are 45 minutes by ferry. This island, 68

the nearest to Pattaya of many, offers relaxation in the most tropical of styles. Gay Pattaya In the day time, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach is a short ride from Pattaya. Here you can relax in deckchairs or on loungers, and be waited on all day. It is, however, in the evening when the city comes truly alive. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. The Copa Showbar has an exciting, twice nightly, cabaret show and a unique erotic un-

derwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”. The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightly, and is not to be missed. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know. The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex.

Make a statement

Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of the many beer bars particularly notable are Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above.

250 thb+pp

Finally, for the true Night Owls, Pattaya offers a selection of world class late night discos. Dave Man Club and Nab are just two terrific venues where you can dance the night away, surrounded by super sexy Coyote dancers, until the wee small hours of the morning.

P

Phuket is the quintessential tropical resort vacation, complete with exotic nightlife. There are international flights directly to the island, or fly easily and affordably from Bangkok or Pattaya Utapao. VIP buses are available between Phuket and Bangkok. There are virtually no metered taxis on the island so book ground transportation from the airport with you hotel. From Phuket airport to Patong in a private car direct to your hotel is 600 THB. You can find a shared minivan for less. Motorcycle rentals are inexpensive. In the daytime there are affordable busses. Most Tuk Tuks have a 200-baht minimum rate and motorcycle taxis start at 40 baht.

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds. Parasail, snorkel, play golf, ride an elephant, canoe in hidden caves, sightsee, take a Thai cooking school course, dance the night away, or just spend lazy days on the beach. Phuket is such a popular international tourist destination for people from all lifestyles; they are not necessarily all gay friendly, so use a gay tour company at your accommodation or use the OUT guide. Phuket Fantasea is a vast outdoor theatre with a huge cast. Voted “best attraction” for several years running by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the ticket price (up 80

to 2,250 including transportation and VIP seating) also includes a buffet dinner, cultural parade and street show. No visit to Thailand would be complete without a visit to a ladyboy show and in Phuket, Simon Cabaret, is recommended. One of the best views available from anywhere on Phuket is Promthep Cape near Nai Harn beach near Rawai beach, with a nearby restaurant for romantic sunsets. Elsewhere, the Big Buddha overlooks Chalong Bay, and is over 25 meters wide and 45 meters high, adorned with 135 tons of white jade marble. Phuket has great shopping, especially

in Patong. Sharpen your bartering skills with street vendors or check out the higher end offerings at the very modern Jungceylon Mall with its spectacular outdoor dancing water shows. Only a 20baht bus ride (daytimes only) away is another modern shopping mall in Phuket Town, Central Festival. Phuket Town is very quaint and filled with restaurants, galleries, and more. It feels very unlike Thailand but more like a quaint little “Western” town. The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is on Patong Beach in the Paradise Complex, at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel. A mix of gay and straight hotels and guesthouses, gay saunas, bars, cabarets, massage parlours, and guy shows, the Paradise Complex is a great place to hang out at night. If you book a room within the Paradise Complex, ask in advance about noise levels—most can offer you a room that is not on a main Soi. Paradise Complex has two types of cabaret shows: “Go Go clubs” and Discos. Much effort goes into the shows, so patrons bounce from one to the next. The oldest Go Go show bars are My Way and Tangmo clubs with other cabaret variations at Mamasan’s.

Go Go bars Dempseys, Boys & Boys and James Dean Bar are notable. The popular outdoor upscale “Beer Bars” as always packed. The most popular are Connect, Sundowner, James Dean & Friends. Chic, a stylish place converted to an openair lounge (where BB Boys used to be) across from the lovely Orchid Lounge, draped with Orchids, offers coffee, and snacks. For late night entertainment, try Kiss Club and Boat Bar. Both are Discos and have lively outdoor patios and free cabaret shows. Boat Bar is as friendly as they come, the owner is the host with the most, and the shows are incredibly moving, energetic and inspiring. The Backstage and Knud’s are recommended and superior accommodation can be found at the beautifully refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse and Restaurant. The Gay Day Tour is great fun, every Saturday. Revellers convene at 11:00 a.m. at the Connect Guest House in the Paradise Complex and then go by minivan and then speedboat to a Koh Yao Yai private beach, equipped with private fresh water shower and toilet. The price, 1,850 THB includes, beach chairs and umbrellas, plenty of food and an open bar.
