OUT Post

Dear Editor, Your letters in print and online editor@out-in-thailand.com

Some post has been edited in the interest of succinctness. Free ‘I AM OUT IN THAILAND’ tee-shirts to all published posters include your snail mail address.

What a refreshing magazine you have created! So full of interesting stories , articles and reviews. I particularly enjoy reading the ‘True Love’ pieces . These have so much resonance personally, having lived here as a retiree for almost 3 years and experienced the ups and downs of farang / Thai relationships. I do hope I have always been respectful and supportive towards these boys, appreciating their often precarious personal situations. It is not always obvious that they, in turn, appreciate my situation, particularly when it comes to that hoary old issue of money! Despite many ‘let down’ instan ces in this regards, I still cannot stop falling in love with these beautiful, fascinating and exciting young men. I know I am not alone in this and wish all my fellow farang good luck and continuing kind hearts. You will be rewarded, in some as yet unexplained way! With best wishes to all at Out mag for its continuing prosperity and popularity. DC (Chiang Mai) Dear DC, Many thanks for your kind words and I am happy that you liked True Love? Watch out for the start of a new series in August! JB.

COVER STORY Sherwin’s Sexy Swimwear!

10

Sexy Sherwin Limon Abuel is the handsome hunk who won the coveted Mr Gay World Philippines crown in 2010, only to be dethroned by the organisers in a storm of controversy. He has put all that behind him now and has started a whole new life here in Thailand, launching his own exclusive line in designer swimwear. Bangkok based Sherwin, 35, grew up in

the Philippines. Raised by his grandparents, he says, “We were not rich but we were very happy.” He was a self-starter at school and after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in merchandising, he attended the Philippines Fashion Institute because of his love for clothes. “I always wanted to create my own brand.” 11

“I approached the Mr Gay World organisers, saying, “I don’t like your swimwear- let me do it!” They were interested in his ideas but, says Sherwin: “They were more interested in having me as a competitor.” He thought he was too ugly to win but “They persuaded me to enter.” No-one was more surprised than Sherwin when he won. “There were plenty of boys there who were more attractive than me. I think it was my honesty and confidence that won it for me. It was a lovely experience.” 12

“The MGW organisers moulded all competitors with lessons from stylists and actors and I think that gave me a lot of confidence but what I value most from the experience is all the new friends that I made as a result of winning.” The friendliness of people in Thailand was a major attraction for Sherwin; “As an Asian in Thailand, I feel special and that feeling comes from the fantastic welcome from the Thais and foreigners I have met here.”

TRUE LOVE?

Part 6 – Till death us do part.

The exciting range of Limon swimwear is launched with eight sexy styles, all designed by Sherwin and certain to make a spectacular splash. “They are fresh and new,” he enthuses, “the patterns are all original and we use really good quality fabrics.” The Limon brand will really stand out on the beach or at a sexy pool party. To celebrate this new venture, we are offering five OUT iT readers the chance to sport their stuff in some exclusive Limon Swimwear. 14

In early February the worst happened. Paa’s family’s buffalo died and they desperately needed money to buy a new animal. His father telephoned Paa and put the problem to him. He told him that he had to speak to his farang and if he understood he would help. The boy promised to do just this. They didn’t need much. There were a few savings at the farm, and his brother and sister had contributed already. If Paa could send just 3000 Baht this should do the trick. When he told the man, he seemed happy to help the family. He gave him the money he wanted immediately. The man had come to his rescue at last and now he was helping the family. Paa scraped by on his bar wages. It would all be alright. The demand came at last. Chris had been waiting for it. It was a normal request – the family buffalo had died. “How stupid does the boy think I am,” he wondered? He paid the 3000 Baht asked. So cheap, A houseboy for 3 months for around £20 a month, and free sex too. Thailand is a great place to live. He knew it would be alright. Valentine’s night came along. Paa knew this was a special day in the farang calendar. He had already been taken off by

his hero, and they were going to a street party up the Soi. The only problem was that Paa was sick. A bout of bronchitis had swept through the bar; all the Thai boys had it. Why oh why did it have to come this night of all nights. As he had already been taken off he didn’t have to start work early and slept to get his strength up. By eating very frugally for a whole week, he had scraped together 200 Baht to buy a special present for his farang; two small teddy bears in a glass case surrounded by roses. His man couldn’t miss the significance of this gift and the boy was extremely proud of it. When he saw him though, the man looked concerned. He said he could go back to bed. He was obviously ill. The man did seem upset, but he said he understood. He said there would be another time. Paa then went back to bed for the evening. Valentine’s night came along. Chris hated the event, but at least this time there was his houseboy. In his normal way he had taken the boy off the night before and had determined to get the most out of his £6 investment in the evening. When he got to the bar, the boy wasn’t there. He got another boy to get his house-lad and sat down to wait for him. When the boy 15

came down he looked dreadful. Unwashed and unkempt, he wasn’t the usual immaculate lad with well brushed hair he was used to. What a letdown this was for him. He told the boy he had changed his mind and went to leave; saying that if he wasn’t careful there wouldn’t be another time. The boy went off upstairs again, much to his relief.

Determined to make the most of his plans, he asked the bar owner, who he had come to know quite well, if he would transfer his “off” to Paa’s friend, Ton. Here was a lad he had always admired, but hadn’t had a chance to take him before.

The two went to the party. It was really boring, so he suggested to Ton they went back to his apartment. As a working bar boy Ton was not surprised when Chris asked to penetrate him. Chris thought he heard a noise, and looked round. Seeing nothing he carried on in the act. Then he lay there and considered the future. He had to get rid of the houseboy. He would get the apartment key back in the morning off him. If Ton would take on the role, they could have so much more fun. In the morning, there was a piece of paper under the door, but Chris couldn’t read the shaky scrawl on it, so he threw it away. When he went out of the apartment he noticed some broken glass and some cheap plastic flowers lying on the ground outside the building. “What tacky things the Thai’s give each other,” he pondered as he stepped over it. Then he went off for another day on the beach. Paa later felt a little better. He decided he had to make up the disappointment his lover must be feeling and go and see him. He gathered up the present he had bought him. He would soon get to be

16

in bed with his knight. He had a key to the apartment. He walked over feeling more and more confident. Silently, so as to surprise his true and faithful love, he opened the door. What he saw ripped out his heart in a single instant like a slash from the sharpest of knives. There was his lover and his best friend doing the one act Paa kept special. His soul died there and then and the boy knew everything was over. Silently he closed the door. He found a small piece of paper in his pocket. Using all the skill he had learned, in his shaky hand, he simply wrote on it; “I love you.” Outside the apartment he threw the precious gift, which had cost so much in tips and missed meals onto the ground, breaking it into a million pieces; one for each shard of his heart. His eyes were streaming with tears as he walked, broken and despondent, up the road towards the bus station and the way home. If he hurried he could just catch the midnight bus. It was a long journey back to Isaan. For the complete uncut story see http:// www.nickysgaypattaya.com/gay-pattaya/paa-lovestruck/

Perfect Love Letters

By Thomas Tiltman

Standing forlornly at Suvarnabhumi Airport’s vast check-in area watching your teerak as he turns, looks at you and blows a passionate kiss, tears moisten your eyes and you stifle a sob. Then as if he was a ghost he is gone. His journey home will be long but it will be longer before you see him again. Across the thousands of miles that separate you, both promise to keep in touch. Nothing says I am thinking of you better than a handwritten love letter. But how to write it?

Remember that you are writing to someone special so you need to use stationery that is beautiful, a neutral colour like plain white or cream is best. Committing your innermost thoughts to paper is not easy but the environment will help to create the right mood. Go to a quiet room, dim the light or use a scented candle to write by and play some romantic music. Have some mementos of your lover nearby. Start your love letter with the day, date, time and place of writing and greet your lover with a endearing opening. Don’t be formal. Start with something like “My dearest Jason,” “My darling John”. Then tell him why you are writing the love letter, something like this may be a good opener: “From the time we parted I have had many sleepless nights wishing and longing that we could be locked in one more loving embrace.” Continue with 18

Don’t forget the power of poetry. Many love poems convey how you feel, choose one and either copy the whole piece or select a verse or two that shows how you feel. There are websites that will find the right poem. My favourite is Wordsworth’s ‘She was a Phantom of Delight’, of course change ‘she’ to ‘he’ or lines from a love song like MacColl’ s spine-tingling ‘The First Time Ever I saw Your Face’. End the letter by being upbeat. Something like: “I’ve said what I wanted and now my heart is happy. Tonight I will dream sweet dreams of you.” The valediction, the signing off should be heartfelt and real: “Dream of me, my love…”

That’s not all, place in the envelope some flower petals or sprinkle some gold and silver stars, even include a favourite tea bag. Anything that will remind him of you and make him smile. Visit the post office and chose stamps that have a love theme, hearts or roses are good and Thailand Post has many of these special stamps. It is important to practice the letter once, twice or more. It has to be right, neatly written with no crossings out and easy to read. Then all you have to do is post it and wait for the reply.

“These sleepless nights and empty days pass slowly I yearn to whisper again those inadequate words ‘Pom rak khun’, ‘I love you’. These are weak and weedy words incapable of describing my true emotions but they are the only ones that fit, my darling Jason believe me when I say ‘Pom rak khun’. Be positive with your words and emotions; don’t say that you think your new love will not understand that you have such strong emotions. Tell him of the time you fell in love, what it felt like, how you feel now, say how much you miss him and that life is empty without him. List the things you liked to do together and about his special qualities; his sense of humour, his looks, the way he walks or his voice, could it be his kindness. Do not include sexual content, a love letter should show intimacy but not be sexually graphic. 19

The Art of Living OUT in Thailand New Yorkers, Lance Kostrobala and Howard Weiner, met in San Francisco and fell in love. That was 38 years ago. Still happily together, they have made their retirement home in Thailand. Both are artists whose careers have intertwined and they have forged a perfect professional and personal partnership. They have also perfected the art of living, out in Thailand.

“I lived my early life in New Jersey,” says Howard who looks uncannily like Dustin Hoffman and has the ready wit of Woody Allen. “There were frequent trips to the city with the family to enjoy the musicals and movies of Broadway, Radio City Music Hall and museums. Classical music, opera and books filled our home. I developed a life-long love, respect and admiration for the arts.” In 1975, the couple formed an art and design company and Howard’s career as a photographer began in 1979. “I was encouraged to capture the world I saw through the lens,” he says, “Trial, error and experiments in black and white and colour photography honed my techniques. I developed a love of portraiture. Entertainers and models became my clientele. An admirer of George Hurrell, I favoured the use of a single source light in my work. In the studio, I felt the thrill of being a photographer. In the darkroom, I lost track of time and experienced the magic of making pictures.”

20

21

Over thirty years, his subjects changed – from faces to flowers, from people to products, from interiors to events. In that time the world of photography has evolved as well. Photography requires no film. Computers and software create as-

22

tonishing effects. Howard has mastered this digital technology to eye-popping effect to produce mesmerising pieces of work that are stunning studies of colour and symmetry.

Lance graduated from art school to work on a cattle ranch, and afterwards as a florist, painter, designer of retail and residential interiors as well as special events. For twenty-two years he and Howard lived in Seattle where they cre-

ated events for arts organizations including the opera, symphony and ballet. A host of household names including Bill Gates, Microsoft, Boeing, Mazda and Daimler-Chrysler have also been clients.

23

“It’s all interior design, really,” Lance smiles, modestly, adding, “I was an interior designer, not an inferior desecrator! I designed lifestyle environments.” This acclaimed painter is famed for his work with oils in Abstract Expressionism and he sells privately on the international market. They first visited Thailand in 1995 and again in 2003 on a cruise to celebrate their 30th anniversary. “We knew we wanted to live here straight away,” enthuses Lance, “It really was love at first sight.” By 2007, they had packed their lives into a couple of huge containers and settled in Thailand, full time. “You can be yourself here,” he adds, “There’s a real sense of freedom. The people are wonderful, the food, culture and quality of life are amazing. There’s the beauty of the country and of course, the beauty of Thai men!”

24

Their gorgeous home is in the north of Thailand and has an urban modern design. “It’s high-tech in the foothills of the Himalayas!” quips Howard. An award winning Thai architect designed the house that is reminiscent of an industrial loft with concrete walls that are a counterpoint to the chic homeliness that they have created. Art is everywhere. Canvasses, photographs, artifacts and handicrafts grace the space that would put a gallery to shame. But, it is definitely a home. “The goal is that there is a welcoming embrace that is born of design,” says Lance, adding, “We discovered, after it was finished, that we had conformed to the principles of Feng Shui, instinctively.” Clearly, they channel their own energies with this same efficiency and their open mindedness clears any cultural barriers, proving that there is indeed, a great life after work, out in Thailand.

OUT in Isaan

Unfamiliar Udon Delights Many OUT iT readers will not be familiar with Isaan, or northeast Thailand. It is well off-the-tourist-track, doesn’t have the stunning beaches of the South, lacks the cosmopolitan glamour of Bangkok or the raunchy “anything goes” attitude of Pattaya, and isn’t a thriving arts/cultures/ hipness centre like Chiang Mai. What Isaan does have, arguably, is the most traditional, laid-back vibe in all of Thailand; the best food (a majority of cooks throughout Thailand hail from Isaan); the friendliest people; the cutest boys (the vast majority of bar boys in Bangkok, Pattaya and Patong Beach come from Isaan – enough said!). Attractions include idyllic riverside villages and stunning panoramas of the Mekhong River, Khmer-era ruins that rival those at Angkor Wat (without the hordes of tourists), a smattering of low-key mountain resorts and a series of excellent national parks. But Isaan’s greatest charm is the fact that so few outsiders get up here, so it offers a chance to experience genuine Thai culture, as well as the warmth and hospitality of the local people.

By James Hanson

karaoke joint with a few host waiters. Don’t expect to find much English spoken, or western music played, in many of these bars. Nevertheless, don’t let that stop you from going! Make the effort to use your few words of Thai; try to teach the boys some English; buy a bottle of (cheap) Blend 285 or 100 Pipers local whiskey and mixers for a few hundred baht and treat the entire bar; You will have a night to remember (and, perhaps, a new boyfriend or two !).

You might want to drop by Udon Thani during your sojourn to Isaan. Close to Nong Khai, a delightful town on the Mekhong River, and the border with Laos, Udon makes a great stop before a foray across the river into Vientiane and, perhaps, further. Best of all, there are a couple of farang-friendly gay bars for your nightlife option. The Boy Zone, located on Phon Phisai Road a kilometer from the center of town, features ten or more handsome waiter/hosts, many of whom speak some English. Drink prices are reasonable, and the emphasis is on fun. Sexy and funny shows are on offer at the weekends. Many gay Westerners living throughout Udon Thani and surrounding provinces frequent the bar, so it is not strictly a “Thai-oriented” place. Call the owner, Khun Jack, for directions (084) 424-3016. Mr. Tong’s Bar, located near the train station on Prajak Road, is an up market gay-owned and gay-friendly, “western-style” cocktail bar. Very handsome bartenders and waiters! Keep in

mind that it is not strictly a gay bar, does not offer “off” services, and does attract a few lady freelancers…. Whatever city you visit in Isaan, your best source of information for finding out about local gay and gay-friendly spots will usually be your friendly tuk-tuk drivers. Don’t be afraid to ask them about the gay scene – these guys tend to know everything going on in their towns!

Isaan’s cities do not offer the heady choice of gay nightlife attractions of Bangkok, Pattaya, or even Chiang Mai. However, virtually every good-sized city in the region will have at least one gay bar – usually an extremely Thai-oriented 26

Discovering the Worst Case Scenario When The Discovery Channel (True Visions ch. 20) first appeared, it was a fascinating feast, a diet of documentaries, delving into all manner of subjects sure to scintillate the screen. Now it has sunk to the level of most TV product and aims it’s tabloid telly shows at the all too familiar, lowest common denominator so scraping the bottom of the viewing barrel is the nearest you’ll get to, ‘in depth’.

Tips tumble freely from survivalist Bear Grylls and guide you through the recommended action if you find yourself attacked by a dog, trapped in an elevator, stalked by road rage or caught up in a nightclub stampede. “Imagine a moment when the unthinkable happens: an elevator ride, a drive to work, a walk in the park and disaster strikes. You never know when a simple task could turn deadly,” says Bear, “and knowing exactly what to do in these situations could be

the difference between life and death.” The editing aims to be heart-pounding but the obvious staging of these potentially life-threatening situations undermine the undoubted common sense solutions. Bear is a presence and there is little doubt that most OUT iT readers would know exactly what do do if they were trapped in an elevator with him. But would he survive?

OUT on tv

Amongst the morsels is Worst Case Scenario, hosted by a dashing Englishman with a dashing name, Bear Grylls. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, the son of Sir Michael Grylls who named him Edward- maybe the Bear comes from Teddy? Mr Grylls is a real life adventurer. The youngest Brit to climb Everest at 23 and the world record hold30

“Broken Sky”

By Kenneth Dobson

OUT on DVD The 2006 movie, “Broken Sky” by Mexican filmmaker Julian Hernandez is now available on DVD around the kingdom of smiles. Essentially a love story of two teenagers in Mexico- their first love, and we get to share it with them from their first contact, their unembarrassed sex, to their anguish. The problem is that they have wonderful satisfying sex, but love is scary, sex is not enough and this leads to entanglements that threaten their future while darkening their present. This is one of the most visually awesome films of the decade. Scene after scene, cut after cut, are graphic masterpieces of

32

color and composition but it is a long, slow, repetitive film that runs for over two hours- an hour after you know how it’s going to end. If you stay with it, it would be because the visuals are still good, the sex scenes (R-rated as they are) still interesting, or because you can’t believe Hernandez is going to end this film where it seems to be heading. This is an art film. That’s what some reviewers fail to grasp. This is not a romance movie, much less a social critique or soft porn. If the film is considered solely on the plot, it does seem to disintegrate as the boys’ relationship fizzles.

But what Hernandez is trying to document is not the romance, but the anxiety and angst of the two young adults. Hernandez is both careful and daring. He waits while his audience perceives the facts about what this anxiety and anguish are NOT about, and in that way he affirms being gay in bold and controversial terms. These two young lovers are not troubled by society; there is not one scene where they are really confronted or endangered because they are gay. Being gay in this day and age, Hernandez infers, does not threaten society’s fabric and society is coming to terms with it. Furthermore, the two lovers are not troubled in the least by their sexual actions in private or in public. These are also plotted inside the boundaries of what is normal. It’s not being gay or acting gay that contribute to their worries or threaten their well being. Most of all the boys’ relationship does not collapse because, as we have heard for so many decades, all gay relationships end tragically. Thai censors still prefer that formula: the gay guys are crazy-funny or they die. Hernandez demonstrates the fact that there is nothing wrong with these guys or the society in which they live, their troubles exist in every kind of intense emototional Alps that is first love. Moreover, in this modern cultural era where good looks count and great looks count greatly, Hernandez has a really fantastic guy with the Sal Mineo breathtaking face, face the loss, (Oh, my!) while the Aztec ethnic minority fellow recovers and finds a more mature and authentic love, we hope. If this were presented head on, it wouldn’t be well accepted

by the crowd that waits all night at Suvannabhumi airport to worship the new gods from Korea. Hernandez made the movie for sensitive modern young people everywhere. The impressive t-shirts and shoes make no sense otherwise. But Hernandez does not talk down to his audience. In one key scene in a disco, the ironic sound track is from an opera by Dvorak. The movie is almost devoid of dialogue in a way that hasn’t happened since Charlie Chaplain making it more cross-cultural than most psycho-social commentaries on film. There is nothing about this movie that will be an obstacle for Thai audiences. This is one of the most gayaffirming films ever made.

33

TURNING GAY- REMAKES By Brian Baxter

OUT at the movies When it was announced that Gus van Sant was to direct a shot by shot remake of Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, the only possible response was - why? True it would be in colour and have a new cast all these decades later but a complete revamp of the thriller, angle by angle, moment by moment, seems like carrying a tribute too far. It occurred to me that this was an opportunity missed. Van Sant, a gay director, might keep the plot, even the dialogue, even the shot by shot intensity but why not turn it into something original, possibly controversial. Here was one of many films that could be reworked with minor adjustments as a gay story. Most filmgoers know Psycho, if only from television. Briefly the story Leonardo Di Caprio

34

concerns a young couple who are in love and meet clandestinely during their lunch break in a hotel. They are desperate to escape, but need money. She gets back to her work at an estate agent only to find a rich customer completing a deal in cash. She has to take the money to the bank but on the spur of the moment steals the money and heads out of town. On the run she holes up at the run down Bates Motel run by Norman (Anthony Perkins) and his domineering but unseen mother. She (Janet Leigh) ends up with her car and the cash in the nearby swamp, having been slashed to death in one of the scariest scenes in cinema history, whilst taking her shower. From then on the boy friend, a private detective and others take over until the final revelation.

Tobey Maguire

Let’s backtrack. Recast the couple as guys, John Gavin becomes Tobey Maguire and Leigh becomes Zac Ephron, which is part of the reason, in their homophobic town, why they want to escape and start a new life. Soon Zac’s on the run and meets up with Norman, who is now Leonardo di Caprio, a closet gay in thrall of his ‘mother’ and in fear of exposure not just of matricide but of exposure in HIS small environment. He spies on Zac in the shower and is compelled to murder the cute boy……. All that follows is completely logical given the new premise, with the anxious boy friend eventually subduing Norman/ mum.

Surely - if more controversially - Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita would work even better with a nymph instead of a nymphet? Humbert Humbert is already in deep waters with his obsession for an underage girl, let’s go one step further. His actions, from the marriage to the mother onwards and their pursuit by Quilty, as another boy lover, would require no modification. Admittedly it was difficult in both screen versions to cast Lolita young enough to carry out Nabokov’s determination to shock - but this is the 21st century! Let’s actually move into it. Any other suggestions?

So many works would take on a new life in gay form. Famously, the play/ movie Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is already written about as having been conceived as a gay couple bitching and at war with each other. Hardly a word need be changed. And the original writer would surely - given his orientation love it!. Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest has been made explicitly gay on stage, rather than the usual version, which only has it as sub text for all to see. Amongst works that have made famous movies, I’d love to see the Noel Coward/David Lean masterpiece Brief Encounter from 1945 made with the protagonists as both men. They could either be married unhappily or living in one or both cases with established partners. Again so little needs changing. The film lecturer Richard Dyer has already written extensively about this classic British film in terms of its gayness. Coward being a great writer AND queen might well have had it in mind, certainly Trevor Howard’s friend in the film seems like an enraged lover.

Ask Darika

Dear JJ, Sex, Sex, Sex. Doesn’t anyone have financial problems, hate their job, or wonder where to get a great nose job nowadays? I have been told that people read my column aloud at parties, so please accept my thanks for giving me something meaty to share. First, I hope you used a condom. Secondly, I want to introduce you to the “two beer rule.” In theory, those are the only two things that separate most straight Thai men from most gay men.

Dear Darika, I am a farang in my late twenties living and working in Bangkok and I have had a very unusual experience. Yesterday afternoon two of my mates and I went to (a well known sauna). I like this place because not many farangs go there. Anyway, I was checking out a very dark dead-end corridor when a hand slipped inside my towel. I did a quick digital search of the bloke lurking in the dark, liked what I found, and proceeded accepted his unspoken invitation. We took our time and it was quite a bit of fun. Actually, it was pretty fabulous. Others tried to join us but we were enjoying each other so much that we ignored them. It lasted about half an hour and neither of us spoke. 36

After we had finished this person kissed me and walked away and into an intersecting corridor which is dimly lit. I slowly counted to ten before I left the dark area myself. One of my mates was leaning against the wall just outside. As soon as he saw me he stood quite upright and asked: “Were you in there with your boss? I have been looking for you to tell you that I saw him here.”

Having a bit of Saturday afternoon fun should not be considered unusual for a Thai man with a wife and kids. I am sure his occasional appearance at this particular playground is not common

knowledge and I am sure he would like to keep it that way. Thus, I suggest that you never regale others with this story, and ask your friend to do the same. If your boss mentions seeing you, which he probably will not, tell a big lie. Needless to say, a repeat performance could lead to serious complications for your life and his, so you would be wise to resist temptation, regardless of how memorable your experience was. So my advice to you, dear JJ is simply “so what?” You had far more fun than Darika has had in quite a while, so count your blessings. Go to work tomorrow and forget anything happened. You may be due for a raise in salary sooner than you think. Love, Darika

This was difficult to believe. My boss (who is Thai) is married and has two kids. But a moment later I saw him appear from in the same corridor. He saw me. I saw him. He stepped backwards and disappeared. I am sure he has figured out that I am gay since I sometimes read Out in Thailand in the break room and leave my copy for others to enjoy. This incident has left me a bit shaken. Tomorrow is Monday and I have to go back to work. How am I going to face him? Help! JJ

OUT at the doc’s

As men age, many develop an enlarged prostate gland. There is no need to view this with dread because there are a number of treatments available. The last resort is the surgeon’s knife. It is often treated conservatively. The prostate is normally the size of a walnut and surrounds the base of the bladder at the urethral junction enlargement tends to start after the age of forty. For many men an enlarged prostate is not a problem but others find it distressing and embarrassing. The most common type of enlarged prostate is called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BHP). Symptoms include: Difficulty passing urine Weak, irregular stream Passing urine at night Urgency; the need to go without delay Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying Urine dribbling after passing water 38

If you have any of the above you are not alone, go to your doctor or urologist who will perform a digital examination of the prostate to confirm the diagnosis and may recommend a biopsy to exclude the less common prostatic cancer. Minor enlargements can be treated by eating a diet low in fat and lots of tomatoes and by reducing caffeine and alcohol intake. More troubling symptoms can be controlled with medications to reduce the prostate size. For very large prostates surgery is the only effective treatment.

Bangkok is the frenzied hub of Thailand. The Skytrain and MRT (subway) have made it much easier to get around, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

Recommended Attractions: • Jim Thompson’s Houses • National Museum/Wang Na Palace with its excellent exhibits for a slice of Thai history • Wat Arun for breathtaking views of Bangkok and Chayo Phraya River • Grand Palace/Wat Phra Kaew with its amazing Emerald Buddha, colourful mosaics and glittering spires • Wat Pho, Bangkok’s oldest temple and home of the Reclining Buddha • Wat Traimitr (Golden Buddha) Chatuchak Park Weekend Market, the most famous of Bangkok’s markets, where you can buy almost anything at amazing prices if you bargain Lumpini Park to relax and take a break from the chaos of Bangkok and to view the weightlifters in the early morning

The Bangkok Gay Scene Bangkok has a plethora of gay venues unrivalled in Asia. Most Foreigners go to Suriwongse, Silom and along Sathorn Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station,

Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize. Disco Disco is another party palace. Between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage salons. Soi Duangthawee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located. Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais,

expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money!

OUT in Chiang Mai C

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations- a feature that attracts Thais and foreign tourists, especially for the February Flower Festival, Songkran in April, Loy Krathong in November and New Year revellers. Great retail therapy is available at Central Airport Plaza and the walking street market on the Rachamadoen Road, every Sunday.

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 52

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and hap-

pening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars

and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and yellow-metered taxis. Phuket has two big, but very different show/cabaret theatres: Simon Cabaret in Patong Beach is known for one of the best ladyboy shows in Thailand. The show is regularly updated and tickets can be bought almost anywhere. The 21.30 pm performance may be best as large tour groups often occupy the earlier shows. Phuket Fantasia in Kamala is an indoor theatre, which seats several thousand and tells the spectacular story of the Prince of Kamala. Watch out for elephants and aerial acrobatics! 62

Visit Promthep Cape, the southernmost point of Phuket and is especially beautiful around sunset, the Big Buddha overlooking Chalong Bay, which is over 25 meters wide and 45 meters high, adorned with 135 ton of white jade marble, and nearby Wat Chalong. There are nature parks, waterfalls and diving, snorkeling and sailing. Shop ‘til you drop in modern air conditioned malls in Phuket Town as well as in the main beach resort of Patong Beach. Phuket Town has a charm of its own, especially the old ChinesePortuguese quarter.

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel, called Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are situated on the exit road out of Paradise Complex, with most of the gay (friendly) hotels & guesthouses, and cabaret/go-go bars, a gay sauna, disco’s, go-go and host bars, restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, etc. Cabaret shows are in 3 go-go bars of which My Way is the oldest and biggest, as well as Tangmo and Yes (formerly Dempsey’s) totally refitted and styled, and 2 disco’s, Kiss Club and Boat Bar. This last one has just finished a total makeover. The shows at the 3 go-go bars are mainly later in the evening and at the disco’s after midnight. A lot of effort is put in these shows, and most patrons bounce from one to the next. Also popular are the outdoor “Beer Bars” of which the most popular now are Sundowners and Connect (which also serves western and Thai food all day), also My Way, Time Bar and James Dean & Friends. The more upscale, lounge style bars are CHIC and Orchid Lounge, which are located oppo-

site each other. Let’s not forget the outdoor bars of Kiss and Boat Bar. Kiss has a lively outdoor set-up while Boat Bar is known for its friendly atmosphere. We can also recommend Knud’s Bar next to Spartacus massage. The newest bar, Temptasian, is on the main walk way into the complex, along with the famous massage house for men, Blue Dolphin. For all the venues, check out our map of Paradise Complex. Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venue’s worth the visit. Among them the oldest gay venue, the go-go/karaoke bar Superboys in Soi Yaiyui (roughly half way between the gay beach and Paradise Complex). Next to them is cafe/bar The Backstage, which also serves good Thai fast food, coffee and is slowly starting to build its own little cabaret show. Near Paradise is James Dean Bar, roughly behind Paradise, and a little further away, the recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar.

OUT in Koh Samui W

With jungle covered craggy hills, lush coconut plantations, and quiet beaches, balmy evenings Koh Samui is the perfect place to kick back, recharge and of course party a little. Samui is Thailand’s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. For gay men the Emerald Green Mens Club in north Chaweng is the premier gay only destination for high quality, man 4 man massage and body treatments, they also provide their services in the spa at the super chic X2 Resort Samui, south of Lamai. The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. Taxis are notoriously expensive but songtaew pick-up trucks are a cheap de facto public bus service. If you want a tour around Samui or go diving with 72

a gay guide, contact Rainbow Scuba & Tour. There is plenty of eye candy on the many idyllic beaches around the island. When you feel hungry there is a huge variety of places to eat, from top of the bill restaurants to cheap eateries and Thai market stalls. Check out eating options in OUT iT Magazine or on the website at the end of this article or cruise the Internet; your hotel will have a copy of the Samui dining guide. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses

hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has a Cabaret obsession with three clubs featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret above the entrance to Khun Chaweng Resort pumps out a classy, fast paced show while just past the north end Starbucks is Christy’s the first cabaret bar on Samui, still going strong. Over the hill in Lamai Beach beside Fusion Club is Zodiac Cabaret and Tina, a ladyboy icon on Samui. All shows are daily, kick in about 8.30 pm with bar service and free entry. A short distance along from Zodiac and opposite Holiday Park Resort is Boys Bar Samui with pole dancing and take away staff, daily from 5 pm. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Chaweng is a late hour party town. From midnight Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, mixed crowds, no frills bar service, daily until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro is Mekkala Men Spa an intimate massage business run by long established Samui resident, Khun AJ. A short distance further on

in Mae Nam is gK Men’s spa close to Bandara Resort for a range of massage styles and treatments. Pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at any gay venue for an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings. There are no gay hotels on Samui. There are a wide range of accommodation options from famous brand name hotels through to exclusive private villas or simple, Samui style bungalows and good quality, gay only, owner occupied B&Bsomething for all needs. Check out the options on the website below or search the Internet. Websites for all the gay businesses in this guide and more detailed information on gay accommodation, bars, restaurants, massage, things to do, what to be aware of @ www.gaykohsamui.net & www. gaykohsamui.com 73

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets, from local street stalls, to five star gourmet haut cuisine. Water sports include diving, jet skiing and parasailing. Try Gokarting or bungee jumping or a massage at one of the many salons. There are many gyms and exercise facilities.

Just some sample highlights around Pattaya; Pattaya Elephant Village has guided tours through the jungle on elephant back, ox cart, rafting, and much more. Nong Nooch Tropical Garden has beautiful landscaped gardens and amazing panoramas. Don’t miss the French Garden and Orchid display. Also daily cultural and elephant shows as well as a charming zoo at this “Chelsea Flower Show” winning Garden. Tiffany’s and Alcazar Ladyboy cabaret shows, both on second road, are a feast of glamour and glitz. Tiffany’s in particular is energetic and tours the world with its spectacular show. The crystal clear waters of Koh Larn, are 45 minutes by ferry. This island, the nearest to Pattaya of many, offers relaxation in the most tropical of styles. 78

Gay Pattaya In the day time, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach is a short ride from Pattaya. Here you can relax in deckchairs or on loungers, and be waited on all day. It is, however, in the evening when the city comes truly alive. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. The Copa Showbar has an exciting, twice nightly, cabaret show and a unique erotic underwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”.

The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightlnd is not to be missed and Happy Place Bar offers plenty of special promotions. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know. The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex. Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of the many beer bars particularly notable are

Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above. Finally, for the true Night Owls, Pattaya offers a selection of world class late night discos. Dave Man Club and Nab are just two terrific venues where you can dance the night away, surrounded by super sexy Coyote dancers, until the wee small hours of the morning.
