Dear Editor, Your contributor may be right about Marlon Brando’s fine performance in Reflections in a Golden Eye (Feb issue). Part of its success might be beca use Brando was ‘straight’, though allegedly helped out early in his career when the rest were busy. It was perhaps worth pointing out that the role was schedule d for Montgomery Clift, who director John Hus ton wanted after working with him on Freud. So did his friend and would-be co -star, the iconic Elizabet h Taylor (surely the best friend gays ever had). She even offered her fee as part collatoral to get Clift insured. Sadly a heart attack robbed him of the part, which he would have played wonderfully (if differently from Brando), as a gay man and one who suffered as did the film›s character. Liz and Monty co-starred in another ‹gay› movie Suddenly Last Summer, but it›s not in the class of Reflections...which is by the way available on DVD. Sincerely RB (Phuket)

True Love?

Part 2 - From this day forward

Paa had come to Pattaya from a poor village in Isaan to make his fortune. But his overriding mission was to find true love. He started work the very day he arrived. He was given a tee shirt with the bar’s logo on it and a pair of quite baggy shorts, which didn’t fit at all. He washed his long hair clean and he noticed the rest of the boys in the bar spent a long time on their own hair, giving themselves elaborate hairstyles, spiked and peaked. He always kept his hair long, straight and perfectly brushed. The whole evening he had to put up with different farang touching him. Sex with men wasn’t something our homeboy had come across before. The whole idea of gay sex, and gay sex for money was completely strange to him. He even had one farang sit next to him for about an hour. During this hour, the man spent most of the time with his hand inside the boy’s underwear. At one point the hand movements of the man got quicker and quicker, until Paa couldn’t hold back any longer.

Chris had come to Pattaya; a retired stockbroker from Surbiton. He had come for the cheap gay sex and the chance to make his golden handshake last. On his first night in town he went to a bar he didn’t used to frequent often. However he had been told there were some new boys there and they were fresh from Isaan. He looked around and one boy in particular caught his eye. He did look new and did look different. Unlike the others, he had a “normal” hair style rather than it being primped and preened. He sat down with the boy, and, as frequently happens, the lad didn’t resist when he put his hand inside his very baggy shorts. He marvelled that the shorts appeared to have been made for the boy, with just enough room extra to get his hand inside. After what felt like a very small time playing inside, the lad’s breathing suggested a climax and Chris started working harder and faster. The boy didn’t try to stop him, in contrast to most of the bar boys, and he climaxed. “He must have been new,” mused Chris. “They don’t normally do that at all, let alone so quickly. “

The inevitable had happened and he had to go to clean himself up. The man tried to come in with him. Paa, not knowing what was going on, refused the advances and closed the door firmly with the customer on the other side. At least he gave him 100 Baht when he left, which went towards food for the following day. He knew he could get a good meal of pork or chicken fried rice for 20 Baht and a bottle of water for 6 Baht, so there would be plenty left to start his fortune. But it also left him feeling very dirty and unloved. A very disillusioned boy, far from home crawled wearily up to bed and quietly cried himself to sleep. When the boy went to the toilet to clean up, Chris followed, in the hope of giving himself some relief, but the boy shut the door in his face and the disappointed customer had to go back to his seat, unfulfilled. Even though the boy didn’t speak any English, they had managed to communicate, using the very pitiful Thai that he spoke and a lot of gestures. The boy had told him his name, but Chris had seen so many in his life, and the name just didn’t stick. He did have a nice time though and gave the boy a brand new 100 Baht note for the trouble. He had many of these in his wallet and £2 for an evening’s groping was really small change for him. His evening out so far had cost less than £10 and although he hadn’t managed a climax, he had had a good evening. He left the bar and went to bed that night, in his new home, smiling and happy. Long Distance Love: a survivor’s guide. By Damien Bouhours

I was 20 when I first came to Lao PDR. It was April and the country was actively preparing itself for the Buddhist New Year celebrations (Pi Mai Lao). If this colourful and wet event was surely a bonus in my travel plan, it wasn’t what convinced me to book my ticket to fly half way round the planet. I had met a cute Lao guy on some gay website. After chatting our fingers off on MSN, I had decided to move things a step further and meet him in real life. Love at first sight, days of walking on clouds and I couldn’t be happier. But this was only a vacation and I eventually had to go back to my boring European routine. We were back to square one. Actually, we weren’t exactly at the same point. Our situation was even worse than before. I had kissed his lips. I had felt his skin on my fingers. Marcel Proust cherished the odors of freshly baked madeleines as his dearest memory. My madeleine was my lover’s smell. With thousands of kilometers separating each other, the lack of him became excruciating and the only 10

window opened to his world was my cold computer screen. How frustrating! Phone calls helped for a while, cam sex did too but we needed more. After few difficult months, I managed to move to Lao PDR. When our story ended, I had to deal with a long-distance relationship again, twice! From a boyfriend living in Chiang Mai to another one spending most of his time working in Pattaya, I had my share of that schizophrenic l i f e - style.

One day, I’d be jumping in his arms and have passionate I-missedyou-so-bad sex but the next we would have endless I-missyou-so-much conversations over the phone. Sadly, it always failed the test of time and left my heart in pieces.

I’m convinced that long distance relationship trauma is the new disease of the 21st century and of course we can all blame it on Internet. Thanks to Fridae, Gayromeo, Gay.com or Manhunt, we can now meet people living in other cities or even countries; we find them exotic, intriguing and much more appealing than those who live around the corner, so we end up dating internationally. Relationships move as fast as the speed of your wireless connection. You hop on a plane, meet up for a date, chemistry is there, you go back home and you already are in a committed relationship. Several of my close friends are now dealing with that situation, with varying success. If their journeys are different, their hopes are identical. They all deeply believe in their love for one another and feel that a few hundreds or thousands kilometers won’t stop them from being together. Realistically speaking though, geographical distance is often followed by a sentimental gap, growing bigger and bigger between each partner, as time passes by. So don’t waste a second. No spontaneity is allowed if you want to survive a long distance relationship. You’ve got to be prepared, organized and able to plan your love reunions in advance. It will give you a sense of stability and ground your relationship. If getaways can’t occur as often as you would like, be prepared to make concessions. I don’t know if it’s testosterone’s fault or simply the central place given to sex in the gay universe, but asking two men together and living apart, to stay faithful to each other can sound, nowadays, like a bad joke. The concept of the open relationship has taken over the gay world as rapidly as sissy boys shake their asses to Lady Gaga’s beats. Monogamy

has become tacky. In Thailand, “gigs” gravitate around your loved one. You close one eye and have fuck dates with other guys. You’ve just got to convince yourself that cheating doesn’t mean anything and that your feelings for one another aren’t fading away. Is it a skip and jump from a break up? It doesn’t have to be. Just set your own rules and make sure you take every decision as a couple and not as two single people sharing a special bond. To ensure that your love is distance-proof, there is actually only one requirement: don’t let that uneasy situation poison the core of your relationship. Don’t let distance be its central component. It should be about you and him, not about the absence of “us”. Keep in mind that being apart is not a death sentence hanging over your love story, it’s just an obstacle.

A Movie Maverick

This month we have a world exclusive interview with Cannes Palme D’Or winner, Apichatpong Weerasethakul who spoke to James Barnes about that ‘win’, his life, his love, gay rights and coming out in Thailand.

Apichatpong is a movie maverick. A truly independent, Thai, film maker who is no stranger to controversy but who remains as modest as he is insightful. Last year, his dreamlike movie, ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’, caused an international sensation and picked up the world’s most coveted cinema prize, the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Ever since he has been whisked around the globe attending screenings and movie festivals but now he’s back home. “I was happy just to be selected at the Cannes competition because that’s already very hard. I did not hope to win, I just wanted to present my film and be clobbered by the critics!” he jokes, “Cannes is the place to make you mature as a filmmaker, to be able to handle all kinds of criticism.”

avoid it. After KKU, I went to Chicago to study fine art and focused on film. I was heavily into experimental film. I didn’t think of filmmaking as a career. In trying to finish my thesis film, I got support from many people and gained funding. So in 1997, I ended up in Bangkok and later started my company.” That company is called, ‘Kick the Machine’, a name that represents the rebel with a cause that is Apichatpong. His dress is casual, his manner is thoughtful. His talent spreads across many disciplines; writing, editing, producing and directing features, shorts and documentaries. “In experimental film, you do everything by yourself- like a painter or a sculptor in a classical sense. Therefore, I view these activities as the same unit. There’s no preference- I love it all.”

It’s not easy to imagine how a boy who grew up in Khon Kaen could scale such dizzy heights but consummate film fan, Apichatpong explains, “I was lucky to grow up when people still went to film theatres. The movie magic is strongest with a large screen and I was hooked to all kind of movies - Thai, Chinese, Indian, and American. Then came the VHS. Interestingly, I was into horror American B movies, along with Woody Allen’s and Fellini’s. I just knew that I had to make a film, but I didn’t know what kind.”

“I studied architecture in Khon Kaen University, mainly because I also love architecture and I was anti-Bangkok where filmmaking was taught. As a person from Khon Kaen, I felt the discrimination in Bangkok and tried to

Not being signed to a studio gives this artist his freedom but self-constraint is also part of the formula: “Because you are free, you have to know your limit and have to control yourself. Film is one of the most expensive arts,” he confides, “You are responsible for everything from the start.” Apichatpong often uses locations within the natural world and there is a definite spiritual presence which combines to generate a mystical, magical, primeval quality in his films. “There are many things in nature that we have lost our ability to understand, to communicate with, because of our so-called progress. In addition, there are many things that nature has yet to reveal to us. Therefore, I always return my characters to nature, to find him or herself, or to be back home, where we used to live ages ago. It also has to do with my aversion to big cities. I find ways to move my crew to open spaces.” 14

Not everyone in the west could easily understand the enigmatic ‘Uncle Boonmee’ but Apichatpong says, “I think it has to do with the individual’s approach to life and to the cinema. The movie is for a certain audience, not necessarily cinephiles. I have so much feedback from the western audience that surprised me, revealing to me. They have decoded something that I wasn’t conscious of when making it. In Thailand, I think it is my most successful movie. People here said that it was accessible.” Maybe Apichatpong’s enfant terrible tag is because he has made no secret of his sexuality. “Since I was young, I was attracted to both men and women. I was confused when I was in university. In the late university years I think that I switched gears.” Unlike many professional Thais, he came out to his family: “When I told my mother. She was shocked for a few minutes I guess. But she was happy that I was happy.

“I will never support it outright because I feel that being gay or straight 16

is not special”.

She was actually more concerned about whether I could survive as a filmmaker!” But he never thought about that survival in terms of his sexuality. “I haven’t thought about this. I don’t think my sexual orientation has dampened or has benefited my career,” he says, candidly. The country’s moral guardians heavily censored his film, ‘Syndromes and a Century’ but with characteristic bravery he chose to highlight the cuts by showing a black screen for the entire running time of that which was cast to the censor’s floor- something that has never been done before, in or outside Thailand. “It was my statement. Some audiences got very angry. Some said that they preferred to watch a movie, any movie, which has been altered from an original version, as long as they were entertained. It showed me that people are very submissive. However, I also have had many supporters of that decision.”

Surprisingly, perhaps, Apichatpong has no plans to back the new gay rights movement in Thailand: “I will never support it outright because I feel that being gay or straight is not special. You don’t need to shout out to get attention. I would support human rights - that’s what many Thais don’t realise we have. Then we can lessen the discriminatory practices. Then I hope that straight men don’t have to dress up as women or pretend to be Katoey on screen to make people laugh.”

Plans for Apichatpong in 2011 include a feature film and a documentary: “It is vague now. I know that it will be about the Mekong River and pig disease! I am also trying to make a film portrait of Donald Richie, a Japanese-Film scholar and an artist.” His philosophy is clear, “I know that living in Thailand you have to censor yourself to a certain degree. I hope that we can practice this censoring less and be more comfortable with ourselves. Most importantly - don’t blindly believe in everything.”

Midnight brawl

Lydia, Maitre d’hotel, and waiter Nat could not be more attentive and charming and have many gay friends. There can be no doubt that this establishment is truly gay friendly and if you want an authentic French meal with good wine at reasonable prices you should visit L’Arc, share the triumph and relaxed ambience. Khun Oh La LaLa Fourchette There’s been quite a buzz around Chiang Mai for the last couple of months. Internet forums have been full of it. Nattering foodies have been quick to urge a visit. The word is OUT. New, La Fourchette restaurant is THE place to go.

Thai owner, chef Khun Oh, was born in Bangkok but grew up in Chiang Mai. His father was the renowned Coq D’Or chef and Oh started by cleaning the kitchens as a little boy. He also picked up plenty of haute cuisine technique from his Pappa as well as a true love for food. It has been said that love is the most important ingredient in any dish and it is certainly in evidence here. “I cook classic French food for tourists and expats,” says this modest musician (you’ll see his bass guitar and banjo at the bar!), “the restaurant style is casual and relaxed, the ambience is romantic.” With Lautrec prints on the wall, it all feels like a Parisian Bistro salon but the prices are unbelievably low. Expect 3 courses with wine to come to less than 1000 THB per head. The small army of staff are the friendliest and most efficient that you will find, they are attractive, attentive and smart. Most of them have been at Mata Hari for years and the service is seamless. A Scandinavian guest recently told everybody that, ‘for the best pea soup in the world’, he had to come to Pattaya and it was cooked by a chefette from the rice fields of Isaan! Eating OUT on Koh Samui

People have been writing travel books for a long time. and its role in shaping cultural identity, birth, marriage, death and war. Many people have written of the importance of food but few as elegantly as Virginia Woolf (1882 – 1941) when she said “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well’. When you travel, if you have dined well or not depends on the individual. Some seek out the comfort food of their homeland, others delve into the cuisine of their host country, and some dine in a famous restaurant solely for its name, others just want fuel and anything goes. It does not matter, what is important is you dine well in your own terms and on Koh Samui that’s easy.

For a small island, Samui has a dizzying number and variety of restaurants. From top end expensive hotel restaurants to a range of often foreign owned, usually nationally or food type themed places and Thai owned restaurants with a few tables or large busy family run complexes serving their regional versions of Thai, Chinese and European foods, or Thai markets where most Thai people shop for food to cook at home. The most recent Samui craze is coffee shops of every denomination popping up. A number of the major Samui hotels have famous and beautiful restaurants, which some may find expensive, they also have big marketing budgets so they can toot their own horns. It wasn’t easy, as Danny explained, to spread the word but with his ‘hi-so’ connections and friends in the media he and the Rainbow Sky Association became a familiar and regular feature on many a TV and radio programme as well as getting extensive coverage for its aims in newspapers and magazines.

The Rainbow Sky Association is dedicated to helping Thailand’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGT) communities. It’s work and influence is extensive and is the responsibility of one man: Kun Kittinun (Danny) Daramadhaj. Danny’s journey through life has led him down many paths and byways. He is a forward thinking and philanthropic man with a mission.

A lawyer by training qualifying from Ramkhamhang University in just two years; breaking all previous records, afterwards he practiced general law and conveyancing. Helping his grandmother in her real estate business, Danny is particularly proud of her because she was a cousin, a direct descendent, of King Rama IV.

and quite a few of them gay too. Business grew to include hotels and saunas directly aimed at the country’s gays, bisexuals and lesbians and it was through his social contacts that Danny became aware that many LGBT people suffered from official and unofficial discrimination, prejudice and ignorance. His attention soon turned to the problems facing Thailand’s LGBT community.

In an effort to challenge these problems he established the Rainbow Sky Association, an advocacy project to lobby, inform and ultimately to empower the country’s gay people. Danny says Thailand’s GBLTs faced difficulties in four areas: the law, personal and occupational, and within the family. The Association has ambitions to promote human rights and sexual health education to young Thais and especially those in vulnerable groups like sex workers.

D a n n y ’s first venture into gay business was the famed and popular Beach Sauna, a place that regularly attracted over 1000 clients many of whom were celebrities and socialites, the elite of the elite 28

From that first spark for a nationwide advocacy organisation and the increasing publicity it was gaining, Danny took the alliance to greater heights. He told me that although spreading information and raising awareness are significant activities there are others in which it is vital for the Rainbow Sky Asscoiation to be involved. Danny realised that the best way that his ambitions would be realised was by making the alliance a NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO) and gaining charitable status. Incorporating the alliance into an NGO was a formidable task taking six years of what Danny described hard and difficult work. Eventually with his commitment, energy and drive the alliance gained the coveted status and is now recognised by the World Health Organisation with which Danny and the RSA work closely. Indeed so successful has the relationship with the WHO been that the Association has recently been awarded a 500-million baht grant to further its outreach and human rights work with GLBT people.

Already the grant is helping the RSA in its work to educate the vulnerable through exhibitions and education sessions in different parts of Thailand, more are being planned. These exhibitions are held at places where gays and lesbians congregate, like saunas, discos, and bars. Danny explained the importance of sexual health education for young Thai men and women. The main concern is of increasing awareness about the use of condoms, of HIV, syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections. It surprised me to hear that condoms for some are equal to the cost of a meal or two. So the choice for these younger and poorer people is difficult and the use of condoms becomes a secondary consideration to that of eating. He went on to explain that young Thais have many opportunities to engage in unsafe sex whether it be in discos, bars, saunas, public parks and toilets or by casual prostitution. New media has also increased the availability of easy sex, chat rooms and social networking sites all have the potential, with some sites seemingly encouraging casual sexual activity with strangers.

Asked about his future hopes Danny was quick to reply with a list. He would like to see civil partnerships legalised, outlawing of male-to-male rape and punishments for the rapists. He wants equal rights for gays and transsexuals in the military ending of “Sor Dor 49”; a statement of “permanent mental instability” issued to rejected gay conscripts. Danny was upset at Thailand’s failure to support equal rights for homosexuals in a recent UN Human Rights forum. His greatest wish would be that Thailand looked to more enlightened countries and follow or better the leading EU and US practices on homosexual equality. At the end of our meeting I could not help but believe that with Danny as a driving force behind the RSA there will be a crock of gold at the end of this rainbow.

Dirk Weeber- OUT iT Profile T

Thailand seems to draw more than its fair share of larger than life characters and German born Dirk Weeber-Arayatumsopon (37) is certainly one of them. This former political team member of Germany’s EX-Chancellor Helmut Kohl first came to Thailand in 1999. Wheelchair bound, he fell in love with the Kingdom and his Thai partner, Wuttipong. Together they now split their time between Bangkok and Chiang Mai where they operate MFT – The Podology Centre and this month, Dirk speaks exclusively to OUT iT.

Dirk is an indomitable man. He has a daily struggle with a mutation of shingles that is potentially fatal and requires a computer controlled morphine feed to control the pain. He has endured several surgeries related to this disease. Always the activist and no stranger to controversy, he is a tireless campaigner for HIV/ AIDS charities and with the help of Thai high society and celebrities, raises money for poor and underprivileged Thais, especially children. He collects Thai antiques from the King Rama V period and earlier. At home, his cupboards are crammed with newspapers and magazines full of articles about his professional, philanthropic, political and personal achievements. His many awards include the Tolerance category 2009 European Culture Award for his support of HIV children projects in cooperation with the Royal 32

Family of Thailand. He is also proud of honorary pins of Crown Prince Vachiralongkorn and his spouse, Princess Srirasmi, Crown Princess Sirindhorn and Princess Soamsawali. Dirk is president of the Thailandfreunde e.V. organization (in Thailand called Phuenthai German international organization), dedicated to supporting AIDS orphans, victims of child prostitution and other good causes. Their last cash donation went to the Northern School for blind and disabled children in Chiang Mai. His latest award he got from the late princess Galyani Foundation as the only foreigner listed. Last month he was a judge in the Miss India pageant in Chiang Mai’s Khum Kantoke cultural theatre. Dirk first met Wuttipong during all the colour and romance of the Loy Krathong festival in Bangkok. “It was love at first sight,” says Dirk, his dazzling grey-blue

eyes, glittering with pride. The couple “married” in Germany in 2003 (civil life partnership), where they started a Medical Foot Therapy Centre and Podology School. 5 years later, they moved to Thailand; to stay and set up their two clinics. “Our patients are 40% Thai and 60% foreigners,” confides Dirk. “The Thai concept that the feet are the inferior part of the body was first introduced by French and Portuguese missionaries and is linked to the bathing of Christ’s feet. The feet are actually holy- think of Thais praying to Buddha’s footprint at so many temples.” “Podology is not related to reflexology, pedicure or spa,” He adds, “we treat medical conditions, cracked skin, and sensation loss in diabetics, in-growing nails, fungal infections and a whole

The clean, cool clinics are well equipped and ready to deal with any problem that walks in the door. On August 15th, 2008, Dirk and Wuttipong celebrated the fifth anniversary of their German wedding with a ceremony in Thailand that attracted much media coverage. “We wanted to make a public statement to inspire others with our love,” he says, proudly, “and we were the first couple to start the signature campaign for gay marriage in Thailand.” OUT wishes them both every success.

It is a sad truth that most foreigners are perceived to have limitless resources. We sometimes find it too easy to be too generous, and this can fuel temptation. Poet Robert Frost wrote “Good fences make good neighbors.” In many ways this applies to other relationships as well. We need boundaries in all of our relationships to insure that we get along with each other. However, boundaries do not replace an equal need for trust. Finding a happy medium between the two is often challenging. My best advice is to let this sad episode slip quietly into your past without allowing it to damage your ability to love and to trust. Bangkok is the frenzied hub of Thailand. The Skytrain and MRT (subway) have made it much easier to get around, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

Get to Chatuchak Weekend Market by catching the Skytrain. Mor Chit bus terminal is nearby. Mah Boon Krong (MBK to locals -take Skytrain to National Stadium) is the largest shopping center in the district and is a transit/orientation point. Keen shoppers head for the area around Siam Square. Other malls include Siam Center, Siam Discovery Center, Centerpoint and the World Trade Center. A walk away from the latter stands Panthip Plaza, possibly the best place to get deals on computers in Southeast Asia. The Sathorn/Silom area forms the core of Bangkok’s central business district and is home to a number of embassies. Silom Road offers more shopping opportunities, including the Patpong Night Market. Silom is most popular with English speaking visitors and has the most popular venues catering to gay tourists. 44

The Bangkok Gay Scene Bangkok has a plethora of gay venues unrivalled in Asia. Most Foreigners go to Suriwongse, Silom and along Sathorn Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station, Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize. Disco Disco is another party palace. Between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage salons. Soi Duangthawee (“Soi Twilight”), between Suriwong and Rama IV Roads, is where most go-go bars with “special shows” are located.

Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais, expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. These popular gay Thai areas are mainly Thai-for-Thai culture with different rules to those in Silom. They are not money boys nor looking for foreigners to date. It is worth a trip here if you just like to watch or have a date already. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. It is an insult to proposition a patron with money!

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations- a feature that attracts Thais and foreign tourists, especially for the February Flower Festival, Songkran in April, Loy Krathong in November and New Year revellers. Great retail therapy is available at Central Airport Plaza and the walking street market on the Rachamadoen Road, every Sunday.

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 56

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and hap-

pening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham.

Doi Suthep being the most famous as a place of pilgrimage and for spectacular views of the city and the surrounding countryside and also Pu Ping Palace, a Royal retreat with beautiful gardens. A couple of hours away is Doi Internon, the highest Chedis in the Kingdom. Two hours north of Chiang Mai is the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet and is Chiang Rai province’s most popular attraction. Elephant rides and white water rafting are available to the adventurous and Chiang Mai has a large zoo, famous for its pandas and fantastic marine exhibits. A few kilometres out of the city in the Hang Dong area is Ban Tawii, replete with hundreds of outlets selling handicrafts and furniture at wholesale prices.

On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and yellow-metered taxis. Samui is Thailand’s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has a Cabaret obsession with four clubs featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret behind Khun Chaweng Resort is the largest, pumping out a classy show every night. Close by is Christy’s while 1 kilometre down Chaweng Beach Road is Starclub Cabaret, upstairs opposite Family Mart. In Lamai Beach on the main street beside Fusion Club is Zodiac Cabaret and Tina, a ladyboy icon on Samui. All shows kick in about 9.30 pm with bar service and free entry. A short distance along from Zodiac is recently opened Boys Bar Samui. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Samui is a late hour party town. From midnight, Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, no frills bar service and fun for mixed crowds until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro Cash and Carry, is Mekkala Spa an intimate massage business run by long establishes Samui resident, Khun AJ. derwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”. The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightly, and is not to be missed. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know. The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex.

Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of the many beer bars particularly notable are Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. Phuket is the quintessential tropical resort vacation, complete with exotic nightlife. There are international flights directly to the island, or fly easily and affordably from Bangkok or Pattaya Utapao. VIP buses are available between Phuket and Bangkok. There are virtually no metered taxis on the island so book ground transportation from the airport with you hotel. From Phuket airport to Patong in a private car direct to your hotel is 600 THB. You can find a shared minivan for less. Motorcycle rentals are inexpensive. In the daytime there are affordable busses. Most Tuk Tuks have a 200-baht minimum rate and motorcycle taxis start at 40 baht.

Phuket is one of the world’s most exciting gay playgrounds. Parasail, snorkel, play golf, ride an elephant, canoe in hidden caves, sightsee, take a Thai cooking school course, dance the night away, or just spend lazy days on the beach. Phuket is such a popular international tourist destination for people from all lifestyles; they are not necessarily all gay friendly, so use a gay tour company at your accommodation or use the OUT guide. Phuket Fantasea is a vast outdoor theatre with a huge cast. Voted “best attraction” for several years running by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the ticket price (up 80

to 2,250 including transportation and VIP seating) also includes a buffet dinner, cultural parade and street show. No visit to Thailand would be complete without a visit to a ladyboy show and in Phuket, Simon Cabaret, is recommended. One of the best views available from anywhere on Phuket is Promthep Cape near Nai Harn beach near Rawai beach, with a nearby restaurant for romantic sunsets. in Patong. Sharpen your bartering skills with street vendors or check out the higher end offerings at the very modern Jungceylon Mall with its spectacular outdoor dancing water shows. Only a 20baht bus ride (daytimes only) away is another modern shopping mall in Phuket Town, Central Festival. Phuket Town is very quaint and filled with restaurants, galleries, and more. It feels very unlike Thailand but more like a quaint little “Western” town. The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is on Patong Beach in the Paradise Complex, at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel. A mix of gay and straight hotels and guesthouses, gay saunas, bars, cabarets, massage parlours, and guy shows, the Paradise Complex is a great place to hang out at night. If you book a room within the Paradise Complex, ask in advance about noise levels—most can offer you a room that is not on a main Soi. Paradise Complex has two types of cabaret shows: “Go Go clubs” and Discos. Much effort goes into the shows, so patrons bounce from one to the next. The oldest Go Go show bars are My Way and Tangmo clubs with other cabaret variations at Mamasan’s.

Go Go bars Dempseys, Boys & Boys and James Dean Bar are notable. The popular outdoor upscale “Beer Bars” as always packed. The most popular are Connect, Sundowner, James Dean & Friends. Chic, a stylish place converted to an openair lounge (where BB Boys used to be) across from the lovely Orchid Lounge, draped with Orchids, offers coffee, and snacks. For late night entertainment, try Kiss Club and Boat Bar. Both are Discos and have lively outdoor patios and free cabaret shows. Boat Bar is as friendly as they come, the owner is the host with the most, and the shows are incredibly moving, energetic and inspiring. The Backstage and Knud’s are recommended and superior accommodation can be found at the beautifully refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse and Restaurant. The Gay Day Tour is great fun, every Saturday. Revellers convene at 11:00 a.m. at the Connect Guest House in the Paradise Complex and then go by minivan and then speedboat to a Koh Yao Yai private beach, equipped with private fresh water shower and toilet. The price, 1,850 THB includes, beach chairs and umbrellas, plenty of food and an open bar.
