BURNING BRIGHTLY Always with The Chiswick Fireplace Company
The Chiswick Fireplace Company was established in 1988. It was originally known for sourcing antique cast iron fireplaces from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods. Here, business owner, Debbie Bee discusses fires and homes with out&about
Smiling warmly as she opens the shop doors of The Chiswick Fireplace Company on a chilly May morning, Debbie Bee appears full of fire herself as she explains the history behind the business. “My husband and I started The Chiswick Fireplace Company in the 1987 recession, which was a gamble. The company my husband was working for previously, Ideal Fireplaces, in Sheen, had just gone bankrupt. He was working as their gas fitter, fitting all the flame log gas fires, for about six years. I was working in childcare and education, in schools and for the NHS. The shop in Chiswick came up, it was previously a florist shop and the size was perfect for our needs. Sometimes you just have to run with a dream and your vision, even when the external circumstances do not seem favourable.” Although Debbie does not live in Chiswick herself, the area was conveniently near to their home and the perfect location, with Victorian and Edwardian properties benefitting from the extensive range of exquisite original cast iron fireplaces and grand marble surrounds, which The Chiswick Fireplace Company provides. Any mention of real fires and Debbie’s face emanates with a deep sense of purpose and love for the open fire. “I personally
“I personally love a real fire, I think the flames dance in a different way and who can replicate that gorgeous smell as flames start to lick the coals or logs as they splutter into life, popping and cracking, devouring everything and leaving glowing embers that glow and fall to ash in the pan? I find it mesmerising.” love a real fire, I think the flames dance in a different way and who can replicate that gorgeous smell as flames start to lick the coals or logs as they splutter into life, popping and cracking, devouring everything and leaving glowing embers that glow and fall to ash in the pan? I find it mesmerising. I think everyone is drawn to the hearth of an open fire or stove, you only have to go to a pub with a fire to find yourself battling for a place near its magical ambience.” The company’s ethos is simple and sincere. “It is our wish that people can rely on the expertise of The Chiswick Fireplace Company to provide quality materials, professional installation and a personally tailored service to help bring the heart back into the home.” She has seen many changes in tastes and styles over the years and is adamant that fires provide that connection, history and beauty in a home. “ Stoves are extremely popular at the moment as is the limestone, which dominated sales over the last few years. But the cast irons are now becoming a favourite again; I think all things have a cycle, have a way of coming back around again. The days of them being painted over, hiding all their beautiful features, have ended and people are seeing their true beauty after they have been restored back to their former glory.”

It is difficult for modern life to stop, take breath and allow laziness in our consciousness. For some, the idea of being lazy is impossible. However, the summer season allows us all to kick back a little as the glimmers of sun paves the way in our back gardens and parks. We can never truly rely on a British summer to get our vitamin D intake, but what we can hope for is a few weeks of sun (fingers crossed) for those summer picnics and plenty of ice creams to help us indulge in this much-yearned-for season. In this issue of out&about there is plenty to help you sit back and read, taking a well deserved rest from a hard earned day. The first installment of our low-down on the local food markets in the area, should get those taste buds sizzling in preparation for the much anticipated summer BBQ. Venture out&about and support all the community events taking place this summer, including the Isleworth Art Trail, Artists At Home in Chiswick, 50 years of Bedford Festival and the Green Days on Turnham Green. And if you haven’t already entered your business for the Hounslow Business awards, then get entering! out&about are proud media partners of this calendar event! Enjoy the sunshine.

WAWAS Something for the little ones
Company founder, Maria Lee, took the decision to launch the brand after having a baby in early 2015 and noticing that she could not find cool accessories for her little girl. She said: “I found it really frustrating not being able to find trendled accessories for my baby, so I decided to take things into my own hands and put my buying and design experience to good use.” Responsible sourcing is at the heart of the brand. All ‘wawas’ products are individually hand crafted in London, and the debut collection features organic bamboo and vintage fabrics that have been reworked into trendy modern pieces worthy of any baby fashionista.
www.wawas.co.uk
Ex-John Lewis buyer and mum, Maria Lee, has launched a cool online baby boutique called ‘wawas’ - selling exclusive baby accessories and nursery homeware, which are all hand crafted in London. The brand name derives from the term used in Northern Argentina to refer to babies, and was selected because aguayos (the fabric produced in this region) feature heavily in the collection and the logo itself. In an arena historically dominated by baby pink and pastel blue hues, ‘wawas’ offers fashionable parents something different. With a debut collection featuring bright and bold headbands, bibs and blankets, and original nursery homeware, ‘wawas’ is the solution for parents who want to funk up their baby’s outfits and room decor, or for family and friends who are stuck for new baby gifting ideas.

LOCAL ARTIST
AT HOME WITH MRS HOGARTH Nicola Carr on miniatures and hand-printed wallpapers I’m a miniaturist living and working in Brentford, I’ve lived here for about 17 years. I like Brentford’s proximity to central London that combines with the river and plenty of open spaces. I’m an 18th century enthusiast and west London is awash with some of London’s finest examples of the architecture and interiors of the period, Syon House and Osterley House being the real jewels. William Hogarth (1697–1764), who lived in Chiswick in the later part of his life, is my favourite artist – which is why he’s ended up in my company name. It is estimated that there are approximately 100,000 collectors of miniatures and dolls’ houses in the UK, with large numbers of collectors overseas, particularly in Europe and North America. Miniatures have wide appeal to the young and old alike, and the hobby encourages engagement with social and design history. My interest in miniatures has been life-long, but a few years ago I briefly flirted with being a collector again, and while I bought quite a few miniatures I didn’t get as far as acquiring a dolls’ house. To a certain extent, I became distracted with the idea of creating and selling, and that took over. I create beautiful silks and hand-printed wallpapers. All of my designs have their origins in the 18th century, though fashion being what it is, many of the designs enjoyed a resurgence in the 19th century also. They are mainly licensed from the
Warner Textile Archive (www.warnertextilearchive.co.uk). The Archive holds England’s second largest collection of flat textiles and narrates the rich history of a great British industry, from its roots in the late 18th century. It has an amazing collection and it’s been a joy and a privilege to be able to select textiles from their collection to reproduce in 1/12th scale. I’m also a collector of antique silks so some of these are starting to appear in my range also. Since the most consistent influence on wallpaper design has been textiles, they are also the source for the designs for my unique hand-printed wallpapers. I think digital printing works on silk – the beauty of the silk’s texture dominates – but I like the finish that hand-printing creates on paper and believe it creates a superior result. I’d been a member of a print studio near to Paddington, but this year I heard about Kew Studio and joined them to use the print studio there. I think people are often quite surprised just how physical printing can be. You need to use your whole body, and a hand-print can be spoilt if you forget to move your feet. Also, it’s good to be around other people in an artists’ studio, it doesn’t matter that they are working on their own, totally different projects. I’m sure that most people working in miniatures find that it can be quite a solitary pursuit. There are many different techniques from the worlds of textile arts, paper crafts, and printing that I would like to introduce to my practice. A job like mine requires that I’m constantly learning, and this is one of its pleasures.

THE DIARY OF A HOUNSLOW GIRL A funny, bold and provocative coming of age debut play by Ambreen Razia, who talks to out&about on her rising success as a playwright and actress
I’ve always wanted to be an actress, well not always! I wanted to be a hairdresser first but then I realised I was too much of a show off to cut hair without being on stage doing it, so I pursued acting and haven’t stopped since. Writing sort of came out of the blue. I’ve always been drawn to interesting characters who tend to be dealing with an internal conflict (as we all are). Tim Roth’s character in Made in Britain for example, loved that! However, the majority of my writing so far is based on people I’ve known or have encountered in a situation. I hope one day I’ll be able to write about a topic that’s completely foreign to me and write it well. The current political climate in Russia for example. I think the beauty is that every writer always attaches something personal to their work, whether they know they’re doing it or not. A lot of my work has elements of my Pakistani culture, however it’s also stemmed from my experiences growing up in London. I think the whole point of the arts is to depict what’s going on in reality and sometimes people think they get a strong sense of what’s going on in reality by watching the news, which isn’t always the case. I haven’t really seen anything positive about young British Muslim girls in the media; it’s generally related to terrorism or extremism, which is irritating. Unfortunately, we can’t censor what they put on the news, however as writers/producers/artists, we are in charge of how much research we put behind what we’re
creating, and we’re also in charge of how we depict people. Let’s look at every angle of a person and create them based on the qualities they have as individuals rather than as ‘minority.’ The idea behind, ‘The Diary of a Hounslow Girl’ was when my friend pointed a girl out in college who was wearing a hijab, big hoop earrings and tight clothes and said, “Oh my days...Look at that Hounslow Girl.” I was intrigued and thought what is that? Apparently just like a Chelsea Girl and an Essex Girl, we also have a Hounslow Girl, which is another stereotypical categorizing name for a young British Muslim girl who has adopted modern trends. I then worked with young women between the ages of 12 and 16 for a year and after observing them and seeing how incredibly engaging 16 year olds are, I just had to put one of them at the centre of a play for 60 minutes. The main conflict in the play is that she is struggling to marry her British and cultural identity and religious beliefs whilst trying to assimilate into London life. I think every young person who comes from a different cultural background can identity with that struggle, especially when your hormones are kicking in at 16. It can feel twice as long coming of age with that pressure. There was still a sense of having to balance two co-existing worlds and keeping certain things quiet, so yes she’s clearly come from somewhere. Sometimes I think she’s who I could have been had I not had the support and full freedom to express myself. Although I never wore the hijab, I could be pretty mouthy at school. Who knows, maybe someone saw me while I was sat at the back of the bus with my friends on the way to school and said, “Oh my daze. Look at that Hounslow Girl.” The Diary of a Hounslow Girl is produced by Black Theatre Live and is currently on tour. Blacktheatrelive.co.uk

ISLEWORTH ART TRAIL Open Doors to Creativity writes Jacqui Stephens The flourishing community of Isleworth artists open their doors in a celebration of creativity, right here on our doorsteps. On Sat 25th June and Sun 26th June as well as Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd July 2016, Isleworth artists will welcome you into their homes or studios to view their art works as well as provide inspiration for your own creativity, with activities ranging from drumming to poetry. Isleworth Art Trail was conceived by Isleworth-based artist Sandra Beccarelli in 2014, as an extension of Richmond’s Art House Open Studios into Isleworth. Developing on from the small-scale 2014 ‘trial run,’ Isleworth Art Trail 2016 has blossomed into a bigger, more ambitious event with the involvement of the voluntary group ‘Inspiring Isleworth’ who are doing so much to bring groups, businesses and individuals together to celebrate Isleworth’s community. Displayed in cafes, pubs and shops across Isleworth, there will be ‘Pop-up Poetry’ by local poets, who will also read and discuss their poems in person. A hub of Isleworth Art Trail events will be in Old Isleworth where you will find South Street Gallery in Lower Square. Here will be an exhibition of artworks by local artists and gifts to buy including vintage bags by Laura D’Alessio. There will also be candle-making workshops. Church Street, will resound to the beat of drumming workshops taught by “Instant Teamwork’s” Tom Morley and story-telling workshops by Dawn Ellis. At the London Apprentice pub, Jan Lee Johnson will be teaching all-day ‘Painting along the River’ workshops inspired by Turner, on the first weekend. A buffet lunch, glass of wine and tea/coffee is included in the fee. Jan will also be exhibiting her own paintings in her home the following weekend. Close by, Donna Loiola, artist and psychotherapist will be showing her paintings in her garden studio on Ferney Meade
Way and you can also enjoy inner peace and calm with her art and mindfulness workshops. St John’s Road is home to artist Rosie Plumbe who will open her garden studio to show her bird, animal and fish-influenced abstract paintings. On the first weekend, Redlees Artists’ Studios, will be host to an exhibition by ‘Art for All’ a community art group taught by Sandra Beccarelli. The following weekend Redlees artists and craftspeople will showcase their work at the Studios. Thornbury Road is another hub of activity with Sandra Beccarelli’s open studio showing and talking about her abstract paintings and mixed media works. Next door, poet Agnieszka Studzinska, will be teaching poetry workshops on the theme of ‘The Garden’ during both weekends. At the top of Thornbury Road is the National Trust’s historic Osterley Park where there will be an acoustic installation by Douglas Benford and Rob Olins called, ‘The Sounds of Osterley Park.’ This marks the end of an amazing journey through Isleworth! In the square the café tables are crammed The chatter rises up to the window Where she looks down on all the heads Exclaiming loudly, not to each other But to another who is far off Receiving their call - a cacophony Of ringtones spills over the square Flooding it in waves of sound A chessboard of collapsed order But there is a slit in time, another dimension And a ribbon of quiet slips through, a satin calm And up high in the eagle’s nest Her sharp eyes can close, can dream.
Kate Lammin lives in Twickenham and has been writing for 10 years. She is primarily a visual artist. The two disciplines of poetry and art interacting are what interest her most.
A Lone Figure A lone figure standing watching from the edge of the glistening pond. The eye is diverted as the pond skater, angular legs stretching again and again tries desperately to dive down into the dark abyss. The sound of boots marching metal on stone cold hard sharp tense a repetitive menacing rhythm. I’m transfixed. My breath is short and dry caught in my throat. Words won’t come now.

Since its refurbishment in October 2014, The Royal Oak has shown the local community its dedication to all things local as well as offering an extensive culinary experience, (not to mention the fact that this is the nearest pub to Twickenham on foot, just seven minutes walk to the turnstiles of the North Stand.) All this is evident as soon as you step through the door. The Royal Oak prides itself on its reputation as a genuine, friendly, establishment, the perfect, ‘neighbourhood pub’ as Adrianne Mead, The Royal Oak’s owner asserts. Adrianne and Simon Mead who will be celebrating their 23rd wedding anniversary this September, have been in the trade for nearly 25 years, with Simon running the London Apprentice for seven years previously. And they certainly know what they are doing. “I love meeting lots of different people and love the satisfaction of making someone’s day by giving great service and going above and beyond what they expect,” say Adrianne, who has also introduced live music in the bar every Saturday night during the winter and live music on the last Saturday of the month during June, July and August. The word homemade is often heard in our conversation and Adrianne confirms that our food is freshly prepared using locally sourced produce where possible. “We proudly serve bread from ‘Your Bakery’ in Whitton and South Street Café ice cream and sorbet with a selection of at least 12 flavours.” Vegetarians are not left out in the food equation at the Royal Oak. “I think it is important to cater well for vegetarians and we offer five different main dishes on our dining menu, plus starters and sandwich options. The favourite veggie dish is our halloumi parcels with sweet potato wedges, which are very popular with non-vegetarians as well.” With a great selection of mid-week food offers including two main meals

ARTISTS AT HOME IN CHISWICK 3 SQUARE MILES IN CHISWICK, HAMMERSMITH & SHEPHERDS BUSH The weekend of 17-19 June provides a unique opportunity for the public to visit up to 70 local artists in their homebased studios. The event is now well established in the cultural calendar of West London and hugely popular, attracting new artists and visitors every year. Artists at Home is one of the earliest schemes of its kind, started by the late Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan in 1973. They were both painters and printmakers but now Artists at Home also includes sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, sculptors, jewellers, textile and fashion designers. “The wonderful thing about Artists At Home is the diversity,” says Jeff Hoare, an artist of international repute and one of the first to take part. “The works cover every type of medium imaginable and the artists themselves have such varied experience. It is really unusual for people

LOCAL PROJECT
JAM TIME Sara Ward gets sticky in summer We had some school groups visit us recently specifically to look at the advantages of buying and enjoying local food. We talked about organic versus intensive farming, we discussed packaging and recycling, we encouraged an exploration into fair prices for farmers and focused on eating fresh food when in season. I explained that these were some of the reasons why we started Hen Corner, that we wanted to produce as much of our own food as possible, from our back garden, to ensure that it was fresh and free from chemicals, without any worries of plastic bags or food miles. Unfortunately, over the years, we’ve never quite had the full harvest of all that has been planted. Sometimes this is due to neglectful watering, sometimes because we missed the moment whilst on holiday, but the main invasion into our precious bounty has been from slugs, squirrels and our free ranging hens. Each year we attempt to protect our crops from such predators and I think the kitchen garden is now chicken-proof, but those pesky squirrels are just too sneaky for me! With the variety of produce available throughout the year in our supermarkets, it would be easy to think that strawberries are always cold, hard and watery. This may be the case if you want them to top your Christmas trifle, but once you’ve tasted a sun warmed strawberry ripe from the plant, I’m sure you’ll agree that they are well worth waiting for. We are growing our strawberries on special shelves this year to keep
them out of reach from the chickens, slugs and snails, I don’t think there will be enough left for jam making as we can’t resist eating them fresh in desserts, on cakes or just in a bowl with cream. So I will be visiting some local Pick Your Own farms these coming weeks to gather baskets of berries that are perfect for preserving. Here is one of our favourite recipes that will keep your summer strawberries sweet all year round.
Strawberry Jam Ingredients: 1 kg strawberries, rinsed 1 kg granulated sugar 2 lemons Makes 5 x 12oz jars Method: Remove the stalks from the strawberries and place the berries in a large preserving pan. Sprinkle on the sugar and the juice from the lemons, reserving the lemon skins, pips and flesh. Boil the reserved lemon pieces in enough water to cover them for 10 mins. Meanwhile, gently warm the strawberries, juice and sugar and bring to a simmer. Strain the lemon water through a sieve into the strawberries and press the pulp through with a wooden spoon - this is high in pectin to give the jam a good set. Bring the jam to a high foaming boil and bubble rapidly for 15 minutes until setting point is reached. Leave the jam to stand in the pan for 20 minutes to cool a little and allow the berries to settle; then pot in sterilised jars, seal and label.

NEW BEGINNINGS Remedy Hair and Nail Salon in Old Isleworth
Remedy Hair and Nail Salon opened its doors in South Street back in February, offering professional hair and nail care for gents and ladies. It uses AVEDA and L’oreal hair products and colour, as well as OPI for nails. “We believe in the brand and quality of the products that we choose. They provide the best results and complement the services that we offer,” says owner Elsie Ng who retrained as a nail technician, having had a career as an accountant before this. “The opportunity to open a hair and nail salon literally popped up in front of me. The previous owners were retiring and looking to give it up. We found this out by chance when my husband went in for a haircut. In our salon, we have very experienced staff who are passionate about what they do. QT has always worked locally, having worked in salons in Richmond and Hampton Hill before this. Stephanie, our other stylist, is our colour specialist. Jo is our nail technician, she does great work with acrylic/gel extensions. Emily, our salon assistant, is currently in a training programme to gain more salon experience. We are like a big family.” Elsie is full of energy as she talks about her venture. “I now have a young family and wanted a lifestyle with little commute (I live three minutes away from the salon) and Old Isleworth seemed like the perfect place to do it! There is a village feel here, everyone knows everyone - it’s great!” The salon has the perfect combination of a friendly atmosphere along with its wow factor design and on the doorstep to many local residents; it would be a no brainer not to give it a try.

LOCAL HISTORY
A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN Linda Lingham Taylor on the history of the English landscaped garden Where would we be without our gardens? They are both recreational and functional, providing fruit and vegetables as well as flowers and shrubs. But the form has an ancient lineage: the Babylonians grew theirs hanging; the Romans had gardens, the Persians too – the word ‘paradise’ has its roots (so to speak) in their word for garden. And even God had the Garden of Eden, a heavenly paradise. And our great English landscape seems a natural paradise too, but those vast rolling grasslands that surround our stately homes were laid out in the 18th century, when the countryside itself became a ‘garden’ to be landscaped for wealthy landowners. The best-known of all the landscape gardeners was Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and this year is the tercentenary of his birth. Brown took but an hour or two to survey the land, envisaging the potential of each site (its ‘capability’) for naturalistic transformation. He worked for many great estates, Blenheim, Longleat, even Downton Abbey (Highclere Castle), in all a total of 265 projects (170 survive). But he began at Stowe, in Buckinghamshire, as head gardener in the 1740s, working alongside William Kent, who, in his turn, had worked there with Charles Bridgeman. And it was the work of these two pioneers upon which Brown based his ‘revolution’ and all three have helped shape our local green spaces. Bridgeman was a key figure in the transition of English garden design from the French-inspired 17th century formal style, which was rigidly symmetrical, with straight tree-lined avenues and elaborate parterres (planting beds) in geometric shapes. Sir Godfrey Kneller’s early 18th century house in Whitton had such gardens and Syon and Osterley too.
However, Bridgeman’s gardens at Marble Hill, for Henrietta Howard, the Countess of Suffolk, erstwhile mistress of George II, were designed more naturally. According to Horace Walpole, although he ‘adhered much to straight walks with high clipped hedges, they were only his great lines; the rest he diversified by wilderness, and with loose groves of oak.’ But Walpole’s true hero was William Kent, for him, ‘the father of modern gardening … an art that realises painting and improves nature …’. He created Classical Arcadian landscapes using natural features, ‘the beauty of the gentle swell, or concave scoop.’ Although his greatest garden is Rousham, in Oxfordshire, his earliest triumph was at Chiswick. His patron was Richard Boyle, the 3rd Earl of Burlington, and together they built Chiswick House in 1729 in the new revived Palladian style and established one of the first true landscape gardens there. It retained formal elements as well as buildings and statues, but for the first time it was inspired not by architectural principles, but by an idealised version of nature informed by a painter’s eye (Kent was also a painter and designer) including groves of trees, lawns and winding walks. But it was Brown’s landscapes which finally swept away all formal elements. One of his earliest commissions (in 1753) was for Sir Hugh Percy (later Duke of Northumberland) at Syon Park and his work continued over 20 years, in two phases, 1754-1757 and 1767-1773. The project required hundreds of men with barrows, picks and shovels to shift countless tons of earth. Syon Farm to the west was transformed into parkland and the road from Isleworth to Brentford diverted in the process. Eventually a classic

LOCAL HISTORY The King had in mind a major project at Richmond Gardens. At the time, what is now the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Old Deer Park was divided into two royal estates, Kew Gardens to the north where the King’s widowed mother, Augusta, Princess of Wales lived and Richmond Gardens to the south, separated by walled Love Lane. King George and Queen Charlotte much preferred the ‘modest’ country retreat of Richmond Lodge to the grandeur of Hampton Court. John Rocque’s 1766 plan shows Syon already landscaped by Brown whilst Richmond was laid out in stiffer transitional style. The King’s grandmother, Queen Caroline (wife of George II) had commissioned Bridgeman and later Kent to modernise the gardens but they still retained axial avenues and other geometric elements.
Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire
George III intended to build a large palace on the site, surrounded by Brown’s parkland, creating a unique mirroring of two Brownian landscapes (Syon and Richmond) with the River Thames as a feature between them. He broke up the straight avenues, rooted out the hedges and laid out extensive lawns, but retained woodland and winding paths. He also demolished Queen Caroline’s riverside raised terrace walk (replacing it with a ha-ha) and excavated a Hollow Walk (now the Rhododendron Dell), using the spoil to form hillocks. Kent’s follies, including the famous Merlin’s Cave, were knocked down (which earned Brown the reputation of ‘vandal’). Sir William Chambers, the King’s architect, felt his work to ‘differ very little from common fields, so closely is nature copied …’ but then Brown demolished many of his buildings at Kew too, although his Chinese Pagoda survives. But in 1772, when his mother died, the King moved into what is now Kew Palace and the scheme was put on hold. In the past 250 years, much of Brown’s work has disappeared, but the Syon Vista at Kew still provides a glimpse of his original vision.
Capability Brown
Hampton Court Garden
Brownian landscape emerged: a sweeping expanse of grassland running up to the house, with meadows and scattered clumps and belts of trees. A deep ditch (the haha) kept cattle and sheep off the lawn whilst allowing an uninterrupted view from the house to the river. Brown was particularly active in 1756, digging out the serpentine lake to the north-east which formed the heart of the Pleasure Grounds. He was a master water engineer and often used existing streams or ponds to fill the huge hand-dug basins. George III was mightily impressed with Brown’s work at Syon and in 1764 appointed him Royal Gardener, including responsibility for Hampton Court and St James’s Palace. Whilst the formal layout at Hampton was sacrosanct, it provided a base for his work at Syon, as well as nearby Sion Hill for Lord Holdernesse, Garrick’s Villa at Hampton, and Wimbledon Park for Earl Spencer.
L@outandabout_mag
When ‘Capability’ died in 1783, his reputation plummetted under the onslaught of the Romantic Movement and the desire for ‘picturesque’ wild and rugged landscapes. But in the 20th century, the pendulum swung back and Brown’s reputation rose once more. And we are free to enjoy his remaining landscapes almost as often as we revel in our own rather less ambitious plots.
A booklet is available for this year’s Capability Festival and further information may be found at www.richmond.gov.uk/capability_festival) and also at www.thames-landscape.org.uk for a map of The Arcadian Thames Garden Trail

Isleworth Riverside Artisan & Farmers Monthly Market
Get shopping Living in West London, we are often spoilt by the vast amount of green spaces around us, as well as by our local food markets in the neighbouring communities of Isleworth, Brentford and Chiswick. Here out&about reminds us to support all things local.
The Food Market Chiswick
Tucked away between the River Thames and Chiswick House The Food Market Chiswick has grown from strength to strength since it was founded over 15 years ago, becoming an established part of the borough. No matter what the weather every Sunday some of the finest stallholders in the country get together and sell their produce to local residents. With a vast selection of goodies ranging from cheese, milk and butter, cakes, olives and bread, meat, fish and organic fruit and vegetables where do you begin? In addition to all these lovely goods you can also sample a selection of international street food, including Moroccan, Columbian, Spanish, Mexican and sushi. Most of them are made on the stand in front of you and so can be adjusted to your taste and preference. Unlike many other local markets, The Food Market Chiswick is run as a social enterprise, with all profits being invested back into Dukes Meadows, which over the years has created a beautiful riverside park, playground and paddling pool all within walking distance of the market.
Inspiring Isleworth, in conjunction with Isleworth Riverside Events, is pleased to announce that a monthly market is to be held on the Isleworth Riverside outside the London Apprentice, Church Street, from 10am – 2pm every second Saturday of the month. The market will combine all the delights of a Farmers’ Market including fresh fish, organic meats, organic fruit and vegetables, fresh bread and croissants - with an Artisan Market. This will include products to be sold by local residents and businesses of Isleworth - jewellery, children’s toys, glassware, linen, art work, bedding plants, fresh flowers, health care and much more. The market will provide a ‘café’ feel with visitors being able to pick up breakfast or lunch, be it a bacon sandwich or burger from the London Apprentice BBQ or a vegan burger, Mexican, Italian food or others treats such as South Street Café ice cream to enjoy with their cappuccino. Isleworth Riverside Events will be combining the market with the Isleworth Riverside Summer Party on Saturday, 11 June - an event that will run from 11am to 4pm, including live bands and dance groups with activities and games for the children. HEAD TURNING CREATIONS Anyone can look good in a hat, milliner Jessica Rae tells out&about. The key is wearing it with confidence Why millinery?
I grew up going to the races. For me millinery kind of went hand in hand with it. I’ve always done art and design and fashion, it’s always been quite a big part of my life. I kind of fell into millinery. One year I made a hat for myself to go to Ladies Day. I had so many people come up to me and say they liked my hat and ask where it came from. It was a natural progression really. Where did you learn the art of millinery?
I trained with the Queen Mother’s milliner, Rose Cory, which was a great experience. I’ve worked for various people in the fashion industry including Prudence who made hats for Vivienne Westwood and Yves St Laurent. Why did you decide to start your own business?
I wanted to be recognised as an artist and a designer. I can express myself by being creative and doing it through hats. Going to different events and to the races, there is nothing better than to be able to pick out your own pieces and to have customers saying to you how much they like their hats. It’s nice to be able to do everything myself from start to finish. I started the business from my spare bedroom. It got to the point where I thought I need to bite the bullet, it’s been growing ever since. How long does it take from designing a hat to the finished article?
It can take anything from five to six hours or three to four days. It really depends on the hat or headpiece that I am
creating - no two pieces are the same. Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
I take inspiration from everything that’s around me. It could be as simple as walking down the street and seeing a reflection, looking at different shapes and colours. Is the run up to race season your busiest time of year?
It’s manic. From now leading up to September. I have my regular customer base, clients that come back to me maybe three or four times a year. I do hat parties, which I launched this year, which is a big hit. I also now stock dresses and hand dyed shoes so you can choose the whole outfit. Can anybody wear a hat?
Anybody can look good in a hat. There’s always something that can be altered or changed. The key to wearing a hat is to wear it with confidence. As soon as you put the right piece on your posture changes. I can tell straight away when someone has the right hat on. What is it like seeing your creations at events like the Epsom Derby?
I can’t explain the feeling. It’s the best feeling in the world. I had a lot of press coverage last year after they interviewed one of my ladies. I just remember bursting out crying. It’s the best feeling ever when someone feels really good about what they are wearing. You’ve got another award nomination under your belt, how does that feel?
I was runner up for Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2015 Epsom and Ewell Business Awards and I was shortlisted as a finalist in the Business Women in Surrey 2016 Rising Star awards.
It’s really nice to be recognised for an award like that, even if nothing comes of it it is such a personal achievement to even be in the finals. Jessica Rae Millinery, Country Clothing Store, 1 Ewell House Parade, Ewell, KT17 1NP. 020 8394 2734 Photos: Jon Daly

GARDEN NOTES Andy Eddy, Head Gardener at Osterley Park and House shares his thoughts on growing your own crops As a working Head Gardener for the National Trust at Osterley Park, I often get asked questions or for advice about many subjects, but one of the most frequent at the moment is about growing vegetables. Interestingly, vegetable seeds now outsell flower seeds and what was once confined to a minority amongst the older generation has become, and I hesitate to use the word, cool. Of course everybody wants to eat healthily these days and growing your own crops is not only cheaper, but once you have tasted freshly picked peas or a tomato still warm from the sun, the supermarket alternatives will pale instantly. Whether you have an allotment (rare as hen’s teeth these days) a typical back garden or just a window box, there are many things that can be sown right now to provide salads for the summer or maybe even just some herbs to lift a meal. We of course have a range of glasshouses where we do all of our propagation work but as long as you follow the instructions on the back of the seed packet a sunny windowsill is great for growing a huge range of herbs and salad seeds.
Also there are colourful alternatives to the usually green vegetables that most people grow and here at Osterley we have designed four huge plots that are planted for ornamental value with hundreds of different varieties that all have colourful leaves, fruit or flowers. At the corners of each of the plots we have canary yellow painted, wooden obelisks up which we grow purple and blue sweetpeas and these supports add an extra dimension to the ornamental vegetable garden as they provide useful structure, particularly in the winter months when there is little else to see – an interesting way of enlivening bare soil to give interest. In amongst these we grow flowers so that by the end of the summer it’s a riot of colour with sunflowers and zinnias jostling for space with red leaved kale and purple basil to name but a few. There is an added advantage to having flowers amongst your vegetables as these will encourage beneficial insects to help pollinate thus giving a larger harvest. But by far the most popular of the four plots come the autumn is the one that is dedicated to growing pumpkins and squashes and these are especially popular with our families as children love to see Cinderella’s coach in real form as a large yellow pumpkin and the grown ups enjoy the food that is made from them in our café.
“Growing any plant that looks good is a real pleasure, but if you can harvest and eat them as well then your time really has been well spent.”

LOCAL FESTIVAL
GREEN DAYS Torin Douglas on celebrating 50 years of the Bedford Park Festival Fifty years ago, the vicar and appeal committee of St Michael & All Angels Church in Bedford Park, Chiswick, decided to hold a festival. Their aims were to restore community spirit, celebrate the arts and raise money for urgent repairs to the church. The festival’s patron was the poet and conservation campaigner, John Betjeman, who was patron of the Bedford Park Society, which had been set up to protect the world’s first garden suburb from demolition by developers.
Green Day’ – and the weekend is still called Green Days, 50 years on. For thousands of people over the years it has been one of the highlights of the year – a day when people of all ages, from nine months to 90, have gathered to enjoy music, food and drink and meet friends and family in the open air; and for children to dress up for the fancy dress parade and enjoy games, competitions and the funfair. “It’s the best day after Christmas,” said one child.
The festival’s president was the Bishop of London, and in the first festival programme he wrote a message that rings as true today as when he wrote it, “As London grows bigger and bigger, it becomes increasingly important that there should be a real sense of community in the various areas. To foster such a spirit in Bedford Park is the object of this festival and I hope that it will be supported by all who live in the area. Since it is one of the tasks of the church to be a centre of community I hope, too, that your parish church of St Michael & All Angels will be increasingly at the heart of the community.”
This year it’s the 50th Bedford Park Festival and we are celebrating 50 years of Green Days by inviting old and young to share their photographs and memories of their favourite #GreenDaysMoments, online and on social media. A new photo-sharing company in Chiswick, KatchUp, is curating the project for us. We’re also inviting all the celebrities who have opened the festival over the years to come back for this year’s opening at 11am on Acton Green (opposite Turnham Green Tube station) on Saturday June 11th. And because it is the Queen’s 90th birthday weekend, this year’s Green Days will also include Chiswick’s Biggest Street Party. See you on the Green!
In the 50 years since then, St Michael’s and the festival have more than fulfilled the Bishop’s wishes. They have brought Bedford Park back to life, regenerating the creative spirit in which it was built in the 1870s under the leadership of the celebrated architect, Richard Norman Shaw. In its early days, the community, with its attractive Arts & Crafts houses, church, school, pub, club and village green, became a magnet for artists, architects, writers and actors. That village green spirit was reignited by the festival in the 1960s. The fete on Acton Green was christened ‘Village

Britain’s Got Talent - Creative Tech Triangle is here in West London
• Second to all that is a thing called Black or Dark Fibre! There exists within our telecommunication infrastructure network a capacity of fibre optic. We have space to send data, quickly, cheaply and effectively to transmission centres. • Finally the protection of intellectual property through EU legislation. It is an essential element for the success of the Single Market that our growing knowledgebased economies, the Creatives, have guarantees of the protection of their intellectual property. It is important not only for promoting innovation and creativity, but also for developing employment and improving competitiveness.
Solutions at Hand
by Stephen Fry
It is really very encouraging to see how our local, mostly family run SMEs, are managing to punch well above their weight and compete with quality driven solutions, products and services in a UK and global market that is not very forgiving and often presents obstacles and barriers to entrepreneurs. A classic example of this is the Oscar winner for Documentary (Feature) Film ‘Amy’ directed by Asif Kapadia and produced by James Gay-Rees, the film was spawned from production companies located within our creative triangle of West London. Indeed many of the historical footage of Amy Winehouse recording comes from Metropolis Studios in Chiswick. While sifting through the runners and riders, nominees and winners; West London is well represented. So it is for our growing creative sector. Tech, Media, Production and Broadcast; the size and the economic impact on Hounslow is enormous. We wonder why the large broadcasters are here, the big production names, the media businesses and the tech developers working frantically to create the next Twitter or Google or Facebook. We have three wonderful ingredients that make Hounslow so attractive; indeed the Swedish Broadcaster MTG located themselves in Chiswick specifically because of these: • A talent pool of immeasurable depth; thanks to our creative nurturing University (University of West London) and our colleges that promote and teach excellence – West Thames and West London.
Hounslow Chamber has recognised this amazing sector as a key driver for the local economy for some four years. Recently others have joined the struggle to develop, promote, nurture and facilitate entrepreneurial activity within the sector. At a workshop held recently at iBurbia in Chiswick, representatives from media, tech, production and broadcast (Sky, HSBC, UWL, Recom Research, Local Buzz, UKTI chaired by Torin Douglas) we agreed that the sector is huge in Hounslow; much bigger than in Old Street and Shoreditch, but far less concentrated. The many freelancers, start-ups, innovators and “kitchen table” businesses needs something local to identify the sector in this creative triangle of West London. Hounslow Chamber has agreed to move forward with speed, with partners, to create accelerator and grow on space that will act as a focal point. A touchstone of and for innovation. Exciting times ahead? Definitely. Watch this space.

MEMBER NEWS New Bank in Hounslow State Bank of India (SBI UK) opens a new branch in Hounslow
On 25 January 2016 State Bank of India UK opened two new branches in Hounslow and Ilford, increasing its number of branches by 20%. Lord Sardar Singh, lifetime President of Hounslow Chamber, and other directors were honoured to be invited to the opening of the Hounslow branch. The new branches will help to align SBI UK with other challenger banks on the high street by enabling greater access to its popular savings, buy to let mortgages, safe deposit boxes, business accounts and NRI services such as remittances to India. Continually topping the “best buy” lists and winning awards for its retail banking services, SBI UK’s products are appealing to more of the nation’s savers than ever before.
Korea, and a proposed one in Brazil. SBI now has 196 offices in 36 countries. IBG contributes nearly 20% of the bank’s balance sheet and these branches allow us to get closer to our customers and work with them on their banking needs face-to-face. Our growth in these two areas of London will improve accessibility for our loyal customers and will hopefully attract even more.”
For more information, please visit www.sbiuk.com
SBI UK’s first ever branch in London dates back as far as the establishment of the Imperial Bank of India in 1921. State Bank of India is one of the leading public sector banks with government ownership of 58.6% and is a Fortune 500 company with origins going back to June 1806. The bank’s core values are always to be honest, transparent and ethical in all its business. Whilst the bank’s heritage in the UK began in wholesale banking, it has successfully launched a retail offering in recent years. The Bank remains committed to the UK market as it plans to continue with its retail expansion that is expected to spur investment and generate employment. Mr Shri B. Sriram, managing director (corporate banking) of the State Bank of India commented while inaugurating the two London branches, “These two branches are part of SBI’s International Banking Group (IBG) growth strategy, which includes recently opened branches in Seoul, South

The Webs of Finance Co-founder of Rangewell business solutions, Barry Nicholson gives us a snapshot of an industry event to untangle the web of business finance
Most small businesses recognise first-hand the challenge of securing business finance in a market undergoing massive change. This invariably leads to confusion and missed opportunities. To ease the path to securing business finance, Rangewell recently held an industry event (Navigating the Challenges Ahead, 22nd March 2016) specifically targeted at the road haulage sector, but equally applicable to a range of niche businesses. The focus was two-pronged: to present specific action points to lenders, advisors and business support organisations, particularly Chambers of Commerce, to better serve the haulage industry; and to highlight new finance developments to business owners who feel their needs are not being met. What is clear is that, like most sectors, road haulage is undergoing disruption, much of it positive. Stephen Fry, from Hounslow Chamber of Commerce, and Paul Dawsey, from Map Mechanics, encouraged the sector to embrace new business plans and processes, such as moving more online and implementing innovative route optimising software that saves fuel and operating costs. Lynn Hewitt from Gibson Hewitt spoke about the importance of avoiding overtrading for haulage companies looking to expand, putting at risk their most valuable asset – their operating licence. Lynn highlighted that many hauliers run into problems implementing a new business plan because they forget the essential need for finance. Frequently, we would say, this is a result of not knowing where to look.
Many business owners don’t even bother to approach the high-street banks believing they’re no longer lending, fullstop. However, banks often still offer the best prices, but only if the applicant exactly meets their credit criteria. This is a crucial stumbling block for many. This is where smaller lenders and challenger banks have real application to the haulage industry. Because these financers tend to place high importance on new and innovative business models, what becomes vital here is to work with a finance company that fully understands the dynamics of the niche business– something that only works if the financers take the time to get to know the sector and an individual company’s way of working. The haulage sector, for example, can be divided into three main groups with different appetites and finance requirements: 1. Hand to mouth sole operators: this section can be served with customised loan terms such as VAT deferments, pause periods, cash-flow matched agreements, and refinancing. 2. Established businesses: this section is more likely to choose a mainstream bank and stay with them, finding their needs are easily met. 3. Large fleet operators: these businesses have the resources to consider new and innovative forms of finance that will manage their business’s needs more effectively. Rangewell’s contribution to the event was to highlight the importance of working with a finance company that believes in developing a proper relationship with and understanding of the client, a vital aspect of developing a strategy and business model that will appeal to lenders outside the big four.

the West London leg of the journey. The truck was parked outside the Renaissance Hotel on Bath Road, adjacent to the airport. There were workshops in the morning, repeated in the afternoon, aimed at companies who are thinking about exporting, but have not yet taken the plunge. The workshops included practical advice about how finance works, what documentation is required and the legal aspects of trading overseas. There were representatives from UKTI and UK Export Finance who spoke about the advice they can give and the financial services they can offer. Santander showed the new web portal it has devised specifically to help exporters and international trade. Both sessions included a case study from a company, which is benefiting from international trade. In the morning Natalie Wheen from Avlaki Olive Oil spoke frankly about the problems/successes she and her partner faced when importing olive oil from Greece and exporting it on. They have attended many trade fairs and expos, helped hugely by UKTI.
UKTI truck comes to Hounslow and West London Export Club is launched
UKTI has a 32-tonne truck, which is travelling around the country offering businesses the chance to find out more about the opportunities for growth through international trade. Just after Easter the truck was in four locations across London and Hounslow Chamber was very pleased to host
There was a networking lunch between the morning and afternoon sessions in the Wessex foyer of the recently refurbished Renaissance Hotel. The delicious buffet lunch was well attended with much opportunity for companies to meet each other. The business lunch also saw the launch of the West London Export Club, which is an organisation supported by Hounslow Chamber and West London Business to help export/international trade in West London. This will be rolled out over the next couple of months with specialist international events, supported by Hounslow Chamber’s international trade team. The networking lunch was made possible by Hounslow Council and UKTI. photos: courtesy of Life through a Lens

Mrs Sampathkumar, Mr Sampathkumar, MP Dominic Raab, Cllr Shweta Kapadia and Mr Jack Frogart Jack’s Kitchen opens with a bang
Jack’s Kitchen at the Holiday Inn, Kingston, opened its doors for the first time on the 22nd April with a hugely successful, lunchtime launch party, attended by almost 100 movers and shakers from the local area. The fivecourse lunch was preceded by a champagne reception. Live music was played during the lunch by talented young artists supported by local charity Creative Youth, which added to the atmosphere. The Hon. Dominic Raab, the local MP, and councillor Shweta Kapadia, were the guests of honour; Dominic Raab cut the red ribbon, followed by the traditional lighting of the lantern, which marked the opening of Jack’s Kitchen. The lunch that followed was cooked to perfection and the chef and the team were introduced to the guests at the end of the meal, to much applause. General manager Gagan Sharma said, “We were absolutely delighted that so many of our business friends joined us at our launch party, we had a completely packed restaurant and the diversity of guests was fantastic.” With pride he continued,” I’m so proud of the kitchen staff,
who presented an exceptional range of dishes for our 100 guests which is no mean feat on its maiden day with such an ambitious menu. We’ve already had brilliant feedback from a lot of the guests. The team has worked extremely hard in the last few months to get the concept working with materialisation of finer details,” adding, “Now that the restaurant has been launched with such a splendid opening luncheon, we have set the bar very high. We look forward to continuing our success and the excellence of our kitchen supported by our serving staff at Jack’s Kitchen; and create new memories for our guests to enjoy and experience every time they join us.” Jack’s Kitchen Holiday Inn Kingston Portsmouth Road, Surbiton KT6 5QQ,
