LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the October/November issue of out &about. I love this time of year, autumn sunshine, crisp cold air, beautiful colours, but much like the little chap on the front cover, you do have to poke your nose out and see what the weather’s doing before venturing out. He’s a common weasel, photographed by Robert E Fuller, one of the winning entries in the British Wildlife Photography Awards. I went to the award ceremony because Chiswick photographer Jon Perry also won an award for his picture of a fox featured on page 13 with some of the other winning photographs. Neither would be welcome in Hen Corner, where they’re gearing up for the National Honey Show from 27th -29th October. For Sara Ward’s column and the recipe for her delicious honey, orange and cardamom cake, see page 16. Karen Liebreich will be composting in the new community garden in Isleworth (apparently there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it). Find out why it’s called the ‘Salopian Garden’ on page 6. As usual, history features in this issue, with Terry Scott telling us about a new house histories project on page 15 and Matt Brown’s book “Everything you know about London is Wrong” making me reassess what I think I know on page 20.
Or if you express your creativity through photography you may be interested in a local group that shares experience and tips on how to get a better shot, page 17. Who knows, you too could win an award. After all, one of the BWPA winning photographs was of baby spiders underneath the barbecue in the back garden. Nisia Studzinska set up this magazine and has edited it until now. I’m delighted to take over as editor and wish her all the best with what she’s going on to do next. This is a lovely little magazine and I shall endeavour not to mess it up for you! I like to think I have my finger on the pulse of what’s happening in our neighbourhood as I also edit The Chiswick Calendar website. We celebrate our second birthday in November, see page 24

The Salopian GARDEN
Karen Liebreich wipes the mud off, brushes the cobwebs out of her hair and celebrates the launch of Cultivate London’s new community garden The Salopian Garden, owned by the National Trust and run by Cultivate London, is a newly restored community and training garden in Isleworth. Named after the popular 18th century drink made from orchid roots, which used to be served when the site was a carriage staging post along the London Road, it has now become a beautiful space for events. In 2004 Miss June Temple, who had lived at Salopian House all her life, died and left her property – a small cottage and a large garden – to the National Trust. After several years of neglect, during which the once-beautiful garden became overgrown, the NT leased the garden to local charity Cultivate London, which teaches horticultural skills to young people.
Events in the Salopian Garden
Wednesday November 9th, 10am -12 noon: Compost workshop
We tend to take this basic element of gardening for granted, but nourishing your soil is key to a healthy and productive garden. Making compost is an essential (and inexpensive) skill. Come along and learn more about it in this friendly (and free!) workshop.
Last year Cultivate was awarded a Postcode Lottery grant to transform the garden, and as a result the visitor can now enjoy a hidden gem. Vegetable beds, an avenue of heritage fruit trees, a herb garden, raised beds, a wildflower meadow, a polytunnel for tender fruit and veg, a flower garden, bee hives, a cob oven, a salad green roof... Every Thursday volunteers are invited to come and garden and learn new skills, sharing the resulting produce. Surplus is also offered to passers-by. Training events and workshops are held each month. Register for the mailing list at www.cultivatelondon.org Thursday 8th December at 6.30pm: Wreath-making workshop
Make your own fabulous Christmas wreath - £25, includes all materials, a drink and maybe - if you’re very lucky - a mince pie! Booking required at www.cultivatelondon.org

I set this up with my business partner Nick Raikes after 30 years as a journalist with the BBC, intrigued to see how many interesting events were only advertised in torn and tatty flyers nailed to trees. We quickly started getting emails like “love what you’re doing for the community” and “what a fantastic local resource”. Events
We’ve had several sell-out events at the Tabard theatre, including a highly charged General Election debate between the sitting Conservative MP Mary Macleod and challenger Ruth Cadbury, hosted by BBC Radio 4 Today Programme presenter Sarah Montague and a discussion on the EU Referendum, with six top contributors including Andy Bagnall, campaigns manager for the CBI and political journalist Peter Oborne, presented by BBC News presenter Julian Worricker. Ballet dancer Wayne Sleep was ‘In Conversation’ with me, telling hilarious stories about his extremely colourful and celebrity–filled life.

Local photographer wins British Wildlife Photography award with this stunning picture of a fox having a late night supper on Chiswick High Road

The competition, now in its eighth year, both recognizes the talents of photographers, showcasing the very best of their work to a wide audience, and celebrates British wildlife in all its beauty and diversity. The winning photographs are being shown in an exhibition currently touring the country, and they are also reproduced in a beautiful book (a perfect Christmas present for someone you know?) available for £25 from the British Wildlife Photography Awards website: www.bwpawards.org Jon’s work can be seen on his website www.arranginglight.com ‘Back Garden Babies’, Jacqueline Spindley
Jon Perry, a photographer who is well known in Chiswick for his photographs on The Chiswick Calendar website and the printed calendars he produces each year for charity, has won an award in the British Wildlife Photography Awards, for the beautiful picture of the fox above. His picture was ‘highly commended’ in the Urban Wildlife section. Jon says he came across the fox on his way home. It wasn’t bothered by his presence and he was able to creep round and take a sequence of shots, with the fox lit by the light of a shop window. He chose this shot because the girl on the right gave the photograph two aspects: “the fox in his society or our society.”

HOUSE HISTORIES
Famous former residents
Terry Scott on the launch of the Bedford Park house history project
It has been well documented that the Bedford Park estate has had a number of famous residents, including the poet WB Yeats, the French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and the playwright Pinero, who wrote 59 plays in a career spanning the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, including The Second Mrs Tanqueray, about the hypocrisy surrounding the social position of women in second marriages. The Russian revolutionary Sergey Stepniak, who fled to Europe after assassinating the chief of secret police in St Petersburg with a dagger, was himself killed by a steam train on the Bath Road level crossing. But it is the treasure trove of stories of the not famous that we are hoping to uncover, people like the French caterer who lived in Frol’s house in 1911 and the young woman doctor who found love when she enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was posted to Kenya during the Second World War. The Bedford Park ‘House History’ initiative is collecting the stories to share as a public resource. Bedford Park Residents Association:
Treasure trove of stories
Would you like to know about the people who lived in your house before you did? What if you discovered there had been a murder? Would it make you feel differently about your home?
www.bpra-web.org.uk
The residents of Bedford Park in Chiswick have called in a ‘house historian’ to advise them on how best to find out about the people who previously lived in their homes. Melanie Backe-Hansen is the author of House Histories: The Secrets Behind Your Front Door (2011). She has been giving residents the benefit of her experience researching hundreds of houses, about the best sources of information to uncover the magic concealed in the history of their homes. Old soldiers
Francis Cherry, known to his friends as ‘Frol’ was first off the blocks. By looking at the house deeds, censuses and other public documents, he now knows who all the former residents were and says he has a particular affinity with one of them, having come across his war record. He said: “I empathise particularly with the son of the people who owned it up to 1938 because he was serving in the Middle East, as was my father. He was invalided out with a 20% disability and I think he went to the same hospital as my father, who was wounded at Gallipoli.”

HEN CORNER
Honey, Orange and Cardamom Cake
Sara Ward celebrates autumn at Hen Corner with honey, shows and hampers
As summer has bid its fond farewell for another year and the trees shed their leaves, we gather conkers, hunt out the mistletoe and roll up our sleeves for another new season. The harvest has been gathered in, fruits and vegetables preserved in chutneys, jellies and pickles, larders are being stacked high as we prepare for the colder months and we celebrate the beauty of our bounty. One event that we look forward to each October is the National Honey Show (27th -29th October, Sandown Park Racecourse) which cherishes everything about honey bees and the products of the hive. We’ve been entering honey, biscuits and cake into this competition every year since we started keeping bees and have been delighted to win many prizes, certificates and silver cups that we proudly display at home. This year we are also planning to enter some beeswax and a traditional straw skep bee hive that we’ve made. Last year, we were thrilled to win first prize for a ‘Tray Bake containing Honey’, do try it and let us know what you think!
Ingredients: 200g margarine 200g caster sugar 120g self-raising flour 100g ground almonds 1tbsp milk 4 eggs 1 large orange (zest & juice) 2 tbsp honey 6 cardamom pods Method: 1. Line a 23cm square tin with baking parchment, preheat the oven to 180c 2. Cream together the margarine, caster sugar, flour, almonds, milk, eggs and orange zest. 3. Spoon mixture into prepared tin and bake for 40 mins. 4. While it’s baking, bruise the cardamom pods in a pestle and mortar and combine with the orange juice and honey in a small saucepan, bring the contents of the saucepan to a simmer. 5. Bring the orange syrup to the boil and reduce by half. 6. Once the cake is cooked, use a skewer to make small holes over the surface and pour the syrup over the cake through a tea strainer to remove seeds and pods. 7. Allow the cake to cool completely in the tin, then cut into squares to serve.
Winter plumage
It seems, as usual, that the chickens here at Hen Corner (currently 23 of them) come out in sympathy for the trees in autumn as they too drop their summer plumage. Fortunately, unlike the trees, the chickens are merely changing their wardrobe to allow a thick beautiful winter’s coat of feathers to keep them both glamourous and warm throughout the forthcoming festive period. For a stunning display of the most wonderful chickens, do seek out the National Poultry Show (19-20th November). As we move into November, we get ahead with some Christmas preparations. We’ll be making puddings, hampers, wreaths, stollen and much more. We’d love you to join us for one of our courses, or maybe consider choosing one as a gift for someone special?

In a very short time the group has produced some stunning images that meet the highest standards.” Practical teaching on technique, such as composition, lighting and image processing, is provided, but much of the group’s growing expertise has come through sharing and reviewing each other’s shots. Their original images, presenting local landmarks and scenes captured through imaginative new eyes, have featured in exhibitions in Isleworth, Richmond and Chiswick, as well as online galleries, in the past two years. The informal group, friendly, on social and always keen to welcome new members, meet Friday mornings for up to 30 weeks of the year and focus for each session on a different theme or area of the changing landscape. They have already recorded rapidly vanishing local landmarks including Brentford industry and the riverside.

The lost art of brunch. A leisurely meal of

Or a lighter brunch, smoked salmon & scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt with fresh fruit or traditional kedgeree. The Weir's weekend brunch menu continues to be a hit Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 2pm. Chef, Srdjan Kovijanic (previously The Ritz, Quaglinos and The Langham), is passionate about creating exceptional seasonal menus never failing to keep the firm favourites including everything from delicious home-made pies to a 500g Chateaubriand sharing steak, buttery garlic lobster and fresh Irish Rock oysters. Waterside Sunday roasts.
The Weir's Sunday roast has become legendary in Brentford. Alongside a comprehensive Sunday menu, Srdjan's roasted cornfed chicken, English striploin, Old Spot pork belly or Welsh leg of lamb on a mouth-watering array of seasonal vegetables with Yorkshire pudding and jus is simply spectacular by the waterside (two courses from just £16 or three courses from just £19.50).

Seven days a week, ‘Cocktail O’Clock’ commences – with each unique cocktail, The Weir offers one on the house, to share with a friend (or sneak two yourself ). This year, the Weir welcomed new general manager Arnaud Campestre (previously Benugo Group) who has been adding some personal touches to the cocktail menu and expanding The Weir's exceptional wine cellar. Their selection of tempting fine whiskeys and award-winning craft beers, including 1936 Bière, brewed at the foot of the Swiss Alps is pretty special! Seasonal celebrations.
It seems there is always something going on at The Weir, their waterside barbecues have showcased live music and DJ sets throughout the summer and as we move into the winter months, the fun isn't stopping. From the 13th November, The Weir's Christmas parties for family, friends and colleagues www.outandabout.media

EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT by Bridget Osborne
London IS WRONG
Oliver’s Island at sunset. Photographer Alastair Hilton, www.londonw4photographer.com
Oliver’s Island, opposite the Bull’s Head at Strand on the Green in Chiswick, reputedly gets its name from the ‘fact’ that Oliver Cromwell took refuge there during the Civil War, through an underground tunnel linking the island with his temporary headquarters at the pub. Dick Turpin is said to have jumped out of the window of the Old Burlington pub in old Chiswick village, abandoning his wedding breakfast to ride to York on his famous horse Black Bess with the law in hot pursuit. Sadly neither is true. Oliver Cromwell did spend time in Chiswick apparently, as his son-in-law, the Earl of Fauconberg, was Lord of the Manor of Sutton Court, so he may even have enjoyed a pint in the Bull’s Head. Dick Turpin could equally have hung out in the Old Burlington, since Chiswick village was pretty dodgy in the 1730s, with local fishermen lighting the way for smugglers to land their rum and spirits and a long since redeveloped alley earning itself the name ‘Slut’s Hole’ after the women who worked there. But if ever there was any smidgeon of truth to these tales, they’ve been so embroidered as to have parted company with the notion of veracity long since.
Oliver Cromwell

This of course is not untypical. Many of the stories that tour guides tell visitors about London are tall tales. Writer Matt Brown has made it his business to debunk them in his book ‘Everything You Know About London is Wrong’, published in July. He gives hundreds of examples of popular misconceptions and outright mistakes, not only from tour guides, but from others, like those who put commemorative plaques on the sides of historical buildings, who really should know better.

Chiswick
IN MINECRAFT
Nigel Walley invites Minecraft players to help build a video game version of Chiswick Throughout the land, mums’ advice forums are packed with parents complaining that their children are addicted to Minecraft. The game enables players to create fantasy worlds, building their own 3D constructions out of textured cubes in a ‘sandbox’ environment where, like the original child’s sandbox, there’s no direction or structure other than your own imagination. A tech start-up in Chiswick is now hoping to harness that creativity by encouraging local players to join them in creating an online version of Chiswick in Minecraft. The project picks up on initiatives by the Chartered Institute of Building and Ordnance Survey (CIOB), which have both recognised the potential of a new generation skilled in constructing sophisticated landscapes and buildings digitally. The CIOB has created a version of the game called ‘Craft your Future’ aimed at 12-14 year olds in which students encounter a variety of problems that reflect construction challenges in cities today. “Minecraft, like Lego, has the
capacity to inspire a new wave of construction managers into an ever-increasing digital industry” says the CIOB. The Ordnance Survey has created a Minecraft map of the UK, available to anyone who wants to experiment with augmented reality by building imaginative versions of their own neighbourhood. The Chiswick tech start-up Chimni aims to do just that. Through local residents’ associations it hopes to interest young people in re-creating their own streets and neighbourhoods in Minecraft. They’ve started in Bedford Park, the area to the north of Turnham Green tube station which was designed by leading Victorian architect Richard Norman Shaw as the first ‘garden city’. Two houses, one designed by Norman Shaw himself (above), the other by his partner Edward John May(opposite), have already been given the Minecraft treatment and can be used as templates to populate the virtual Bedford Park.
All that’s needed is the players. If you’re interested, contact Nigel Walley at nigel.walley@chimni.com 24

HOUNSLOW CHAMBER
MEMBER NEWS Russell Finex named as champions for Feltham & Heston constituency by Seema Malhotra MP Russell Finex has been named Feltham and Heston Responsible Business Champions 2016 in recognition of their support of the local community. The firm is now being considered for the national title of Responsible Business Champion 2016 in an award scheme run by the House of Commons All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group. Established in 1934, Russell Finex has enjoyed 80 steady years of successful growth to become an international group employing more than 200 direct employees with annual sales exceeding £30 million. They are worldwide leaders in fine mesh separation technology, producing the widest range of sieving and filtration equipment for use in manufacturing and medical equipment. The All-Party Corporate Responsibility Group launched the Responsible Business Champions Scheme last year. MPs from across the UK are invited to nominate an outstanding local business which, because of its positive impact locally, deserves the title of Responsible Business Champion in their constituency. MPs are given certificates to present locally to their Constituency Responsible Business Champion. The nomination recognises the company’s commitment to engaging in the local community, ensuring a healthy workplace and providing apprenticeships and training. Presenting the certificate on a visit to Russell Finex’s Feltham headquarters on 22nd July, Seema Malhotra said:
It’s a long way from Tipperary
A group of six businesses from Tipperary Chamber of Commerce and Clonmel Chamber of Commerce came to west London on 23rd June, EU Referendum day. We have been building links with the two Chambers over the past few years and on this visit they specifically wanted to

Seema Malhotra MP presents Ray Singh, CEO of Russell Finex Limited, the nomination certificate at the company’s headquarters alongside Sally Smith, from the Hounslow Chamber of Commerce.
“I am delighted to present this nomination certificate to Russell Finex Limited, a highly valued world class company in the local community. Their approach to community engagement is a great example to others as we encourage other businesses to get more involved in the local community. It’s vital for how we spread and share opportunity and prosperity.” Ray Singh, Russell Finex Managing Director, replied: “We are delighted to have been recognised with this award. At Russell Finex, we remain aware of our responsibility as a leading business, both in the UK and overseas. Therefore, we take an active role in leading our industry with innovative manufacturing practices, while ensuring ethical standards are complied with throughout the company. In addition, Russell Finex supports the local community through charity fundraising events, business knowledge sharing and offers graduate programmes, apprenticeships and employment opportunities to the local area. As well as investing in people, we also understand our environmental responsibility, and have recently installed solar panels to reduce the carbon footprint of our factory in Feltham.” meet those within the creative sector. With this in mind we arranged a visit to Sky Academy, followed by lunch at Charisma, our local Punjabi restaurant. We then took them to the University of West London, where we had a tour of Blast Radio, and on to an open day at iBurbia Studios, home to the media research company Decipher. Leader of the group Brian Cleary was particularly impressed with Sky: “It was a great day at Sky TV in west London … The tour of their extensive facility was mind blowing. Three thousand software developers on site, 18,000 people in total …” So it may be a long way from Tipperary, but hopefully they thought it was worthwhile.

Hounslow Council offers free training to small local businesses A new free training and mentoring support programme is being offered to local small businesses across Hounslow. Funded by Hounslow Council and run in association with Branduin Business Support and Hounslow Chamber of Commerce, it is designed to help those who employ fewer than 10 people and are based in the borough. The package, which includes workshops offering advice aimed at helping to grow small businesses, has a commercial value of £2,000, but application and participation is free providing your business is both small and local. It will offer information on creating a business strategy and plan, advice and support on financial management and ideas about marketing and creating an online presence. There will also be an opportunity to have one-to-one business mentoring sessions with business advisors. Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “Hounslow Council is committed to supporting local businesses and with this project this will enable us to back our small businesses across the borough. In these tough economic times, local businesses rely on the support and backing we can give them as a local authority. This programme is just one of the ways we are helping to boost small local business as part of our promise to achieve regeneration and economic development targets in our borough. I encourage local small businesses to get on board with this and see how it can help them to continue to grow.” Stephen Fry, Chief Executive of Hounslow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Hounslow Council is investing in the future of the borough’s small business community. Willmotts entered two teams and took the first and second prizes – fiercely fought matches with much encouragement from the onlookers. Chris Durkin, one of the Directors of Hounslow Chamber, took the washing up mop this year, for the third year running. Luckily his business acumen is vastly better than his table football skills! It was another enjoyable evening and will be repeated next year. Thank you to all for taking part and entering into the spirit of the tournament.

Osterley 10km Run Hounslow Chamber and Out & About Magazine were pleased to sponsor the running bibs again for the Osterley 10km run, which took place on 10th June 2016 in the glorious surroundings of Osterley Park with the imposing Osterley House as the backdrop. The weather was kind to the runners that day and the event ran (pun fully intended) seamlessly. The organisers, Sandra and Kelvin must be congratulated.

Rombouts Coffee wants you to enjoy better coffee and share the story behind it ... Once upon a time, when you ordered coffee in a British café, you got a cup of scalding water and brown powder served in a polystyrene cup, that left a rather unpleasant taste. Today, everywhere you turn on the high street you’ll find a stylish coffee shop serving an Espresso, Cappuccino or Flat White made using a state-of-the-art coffee machine. So where does Rombouts fit in? A family owned and run coffee company, founded in Belgium in 1896, Rombouts has been sourcing, roasting and supplying great coffee to UK coffee drinkers for over 50 years. Simon Remmer, Sales Director of Rombouts UK, has been a Chiswick resident for more than 15 years and has kept a keen eye on the growing interest in coffee on the high street. He says: “There are a growing number of consumers and local businesses who are more interested in their coffee quality today.” A big driver for the quest for better coffee is the variety of sources for consumers to acquire knowledge on the subject. There has never been so much information readily available to consumers to help (or hinder) their choice, online and in social media especially. Simply type in #coffee to Instagram and there are well over 48 million posts! Pretty impressive considering Instagram wasn’t around before 2010. Rombouts thinks it’s a good thing that consumers are more knowledgeable and enquiring about what they choose to drink. Our everyday coffee lover may be more familiar with Rombouts’ best known product line, the quick and simple One Cup Filter coffee range, available in most British supermarkets. Simply place a One Cup Filter on top of your cup, add hot water and wait a few moments for the coffee to filter through before enjoying! This range is complemented by a full selection of roast and ground coffees, espresso pods and innovative espresso pod systems. Rombouts Professional division supplies hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, hair & beauty salons and offices with premium quality coffees, coffee equipment and service packages,

ensuring that your customers always drink a quality coffee and that your barista staff are given the best training in using the right coffee equipment to deliver that great cup every time. Rombouts is a member and patron of Hounslow Chamber of Commerce. If you’re a local business, Rombouts can help you identify the best coffee and equipment for your customers. If you simply love coffee and want to taste the Rombouts range, we’d be happy to send you a sample!

WATERMANS Q&A Out & About popped into Watermans to speak to their director, Jan Lennox. Here’s what she had to say. What do you see as Watermans role?
We are West London’s leading arts centre and we exist to inspire people through creative practise. We believe that experiencing the arts enriches lives and that that experience should be available to everyone, whatever their background. As an independent, charitable organisation, that ethos is at the heart of what we do and in real terms that means things like keeping ticket prices low, welcoming everyone regardless of ability, taking risks creatively – for example in our cutting edge digital arts programme. What’s happening at Watermans at the moment?
We have year-round programme of independent cinema of course, plus children’s theatre every Sunday. Highlights this season include our half term special Fables & Fairytales Week – a week of theatre and fun, creative workshops for families exploring the world of traditional tales. We continue our series of weekend festivals with the Digital Weekender in early November when you can experience virtual reality and see your brainwaves visualised in front of you while sitting in
a dentist’s chair – we can guarantee surprises that weekend! And we’re hosting the UK premiere of Gauhar, a play that received critical acclaim across India and is directed by Lillete Dubey, who starred in Indian Summers and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We’re also looking forward to a season of cabaret in February and March – watch this space! We’ve heard that Watermans is moving – is that true?
We’ve been in discussion with two developers for some time, and one is now progressing more quickly. We expect to be moving to a state-of-the-art new centre in about 3 years’ time which will be in the heart of Brentford and enable us to deliver our ambitious artistic plans and the experience that customers want in a modern venue. We will be sharing more news as plans develop over the next few months but we think it’s an exciting time to live in West London!
