AUTUMNAL THINGS TO DO

Autumnal

THINGS TO DO Pumpkin carving and Enchanted Woodland

Carved pumpkins have become synonymous with Halloween and autumn. Why? The roots (pardon the pun) go way back. As with so many British traditions, carving root vegetables was something the pagan Celtic people of Ancient Britain used to do, cutting shapes out of turnips to make grotesque faces and illuminating them with candles or the embers of a fire from within, to ward off evil spirits. The custom was adopted by the early Christians as part of the All Hallow’s Eve feast and taken to

ENCHANTED WOODLAND AT SYON PARK As the nights draw in, Syon Park once again hosts the Enchanted Woodland, which sees the 600-year-old gardens transformed by a display of lights and music. Now in its 14th year the trail winds through the arboretum, passing the sixteenth century Syon House, and ends at the spectacular Great Conservatory.

America as Europeans emigrated there. Perhaps finding turnips in short supply, and pumpkins bigger and more plentiful, pumpkin carving became traditional in America, to be reimported back to Britain as part of our adoption of American culture in the 20th century through TV and film. The Irish called them Jack O’ Lanterns, associating the flickering lights with will ‘o the wisps – the superstitious characterisation of the phosphorescence caused by gases from decaying plants in marshy, boggy places.

These days carving pumpkins is just a bit of fun, part of the autumn season as surely as falling leaves and the beginnings of a nip in the air. If you’d like to take your kids pumpkin carving and don’t fancy redecorating your own kitchen with pumpkin innards, Gunnersbury Park Museum has organised sessions, advertised as ‘spooktacular’ workshops at 1.30am – 12.00pm and 1.30pm – 3.00pm on Friday 29th October. Price £12 per child (adults free). Book through their website: visitgunnersbury.org/ whats-on.

An array of lighting effects – from high-tech lasers to low tech candles – illuminate the visitor’s way through the trees. The event is put together by a team of lighting designers and Syon staff so you can even ask them about the trees! Enchanted Woodland will take place on Friday 12, Saturday 13, Sunday 14, Friday 19, Saturday 20, Sunday 21, Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November 2021.

BUTTERFLIES IN CHISWICK

Butterflies

DESCEND ON CHISWICK

New community artwork installed A flight of gorgeous, brightly coloured butterflies is making Chiswick High Road its home this autumn. Reclaiming the police station for a community-run project, the massing of butterflies and flowers is an art installation organised by not-for-profit environmental group Abundance London. The police have moved out and the site is up for redevelopment. A stunning image of the London skyline, created by panoramic 360 photographer Will Pearson, will transform the ground floor into a vision of the city. Abundance distributed templates in 3mm plywood of both butterflies and flowers – the butterflies 17cm x 12cm and the flowers 15cm in diameter – to schools and community groups and organised pop-up painting sessions in various places throughout September. “All sorts of people have joined in” said Karen Liebreich, Director of f @outandaboutmagazines

Abundance London. “It’s been lovely”. Then came the mammoth task of varnishing them all – 3,000 in total – before the big reveal, the installation. The Police station wall runs alongside Old Market Place, where outdoor markets have been introduced over the past 12 months – a flower market on the first Sunday of every month, antiques and vintage on the second Sunday and a cheese market on the third. Karen is one of the founderdirectors of the Chiswick Flower Market, which is run by volunteers and aims to help revitalise the High Rd and make it an attractive place for people to spend time. This is the latest in a series of community artwork installations organised by Abundance London; the Chiswick Timeline mural under the railway bridge on Turnham Green Terrace tells the history of Chiswick in maps.

@outaboutmag

The ‘W4th plinth’ on the railway embankment has become a space for large art works to be shown. This latest project will last until the building is torn down for redevelopment. A number of schools painted butterflies and flowers – Strand on the Green, Grove Park, Ravenscourt Park, Chiswick and Bedford Park, Belmont and Cavendish primary schools, Chiswick School and Latymer. Chiswick Brownies rolled up their sleeves to paint, as did Age Concern Chiswick and St Mary’s Convent. Also involved were the Hammersmith Community Gardens Association and Speak Out in Hounslow, which supports adults with learning difficulties. The project was supported with Welcome Back funding from the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government.

GRIFFIN BREWERY

A TOUR ROUND THE

Griffin Brewery Bartley Chipchase fulfils a long held ambition

The Griffin Brewery in Chiswick has started showing people around again after a year of having to close the brewery to the public. The brewery tours are a popular way to spend an afternoon, not least because there’s lots of beer sampling involved. It’s something I’d been meaning to do for ages, so when they opened up again I was quick to sign up for a tour. Perhaps best known for their signature London Pride, Fuller’s distribute a wide range of beers to pubs across the country and export to over 80 countries worldwide. The brewery occupies an impressive spot in the heart of

10

Chiswick, just off the Hogarth roundabout. Brewing in Chiswick has a life which far predates this particular building. Prior to the 17th century it was not uncommon for large households to produce their own beer. The gardens of Bedford House in Chiswick Mall was one such brewhouse, which was acquired by Thomas Mawson in the late 1600s and expanded until in 1845 in became Fuller, Smith and Turner. The brewery was taken over in 2019 by Asahi, but the building and the beers remain substantially the same. After a brief introduction to this rich history, the tour f @outandaboutmagazines

@outaboutmag

guide brought us into the main brewhouse which is where the bulk of the tour takes place. A very informative diagram (to the uneducated beer drinker, like myself ) gives an outline of the entire process from start to finish. It is as much a biological process as it is a mechanical one, as subtle temperature differences can cause fundamental changes in flavour and even the type of beer produced. Helpfully then, the tour largely follows the process in chronological order, winding its way upwards through the vast facility. At a very simple level, beer is formed from malted barley, a lot of water, hops and yeast. The www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk

GRIFFIN BREWERY process starts with grains (in this case barley), which are processed through heating and drying. This milled malt, called grist, is added to huge vats called Mash Tuns which are mixed with hot water, resulting in a sweet liquid known as wort (pronounced wert). The wort is moved to a Copper where hops are added first for flavour, then for aroma. We’re shown a variety of hops used for the different products. Some are described as having ‘chocolate’ characteristics, others ‘citrus’ or ‘floral’. Our tour then takes us onto one of the most crucial parts of the process. After the mixture is cooled, it is then moved to a

fermentation vessel where yeast is added, which ferments the sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. It’s at this stage where most of the final product is decided, depending on the length of the process. The tour finishes with sampling and there are so many beers on offer it’s hard to know where to start, but we managed to sample quite a few before re-emerging into the sunlight pleasantly merry and considerably more knowledgeable about brewing. I now have a new respect for this scientific marvel, perfected over centuries, which is undoubtedly one of great success stories of modern production.

Gardener’s NOTES

Andy Eddy, Head Gardener at Osterley Park & House, writes “One of the main ways that I add colour – if colour is what you desire – to our Ornamental Vegetable Garden is with tender perennials that can be left in the ground to over winter. These plants such as dahlias and cannas, if mulched well with a deep layer of compost, will happily survive quite cold temperatures and frosty weather and with the hope of a warm autumn should keep flowering right through until November. As these are two of our productive plots we grow winter harvesting kale through them with their leaves acting as a foil to the candy coloured flowers but also providing for tasty produce for our café. Along with the perennial plants that we leave in the ground there are a lot of self-sown annuals that we carefully leave

when we are weeding such as the tall, purple leaved and flowered amaranth which is in fact Quinoa, the grain that we use for cooking. As well as the selfsown annuals we also grow a quantity to plant out such as zinnias, cleome and a tall variety of African marigold. These are weaved through the display to add final punches of colour for a late season burst of flowering that always leaves our visitors speechless that such a huge amount of flower has grown up so quickly when the beds were flat and empty only a few months before! Of course all of these ideas can be incorporated into any size of garden or allotment and even on a balcony in pots so get going next summer and liven up your productive area with some added colour.”

Brentford

MEANWHILE IN

It might look like a building site, but there’s a lot happening Brentford has looked dreadful for years. Locals have become inured to the boarded up buildings and huge hoardings everywhere but unless you knew Brentford well, you’d think that’s all there was.

expanded quickly. He works with his brother Algy, a talented metal worker, and his father Lance, a Classic car restorer, who each have their own businesses on the site.

The Brentford Project is now under way, with phase one of the new town centre being built, as witnessed by the towering cranes overshadowing the hoardings. Phase two, the old soap factory in Catherine Wheel Rd (aka the Blue Road, since it has been painted blue) is full of ‘meanwhile’ businesses – a cluster of cool, arty places which have sprung up in the old industrial landscape, happy to take a short-term lease in scruffy accommodation until the time comes to demolish the lot.

There’s a huge appetite for Vintage cars, Merlin says, which is currently under served in west London. He’s created a classic car hub, a destination for owners to come and socialise, eat pizza, hang out and talk about cars. The Porsche owners club meets once a month, buying a £10 ticket to raise money for charity.

The McCormacks The McCormack family are at the centre of operations in Catherine Wheel Rd. Merlin McCormack, 27, started his Vintage car business in 2014 with car show rooms in Lionel Rd before the Brentford Community Stadium was built. As the diggers moved in they shifted the vintage cars to the old soap factory in Brentford and the business has

16

Merlin bought his first car at the age of 11, a Peugot 205 that had failed its MOT, which he bought for £31. His mother Annie had to go and pick it up for him. He got it done up and sold it on for £500 and acquired a taste for the car trade. Annie used to run an estate agents in Ealing, but now runs The Brewery Tap, a Fuller’s pub a couple of hundred yards away from the car showrooms, which she took over in November 2019, bringing it to life with an eclectic mix of live music and good food – Santa Maria pizzas.

FEATURE

The Santa Maria pizza restaurant is above the car showroom and serves authentic Neapolitan pizza. Twice voted best in London by Time Out, with restaurants also in Fitzrovia, Fulham and Ealing, you can sit in the restaurant or order from the pub. They also do takeaway. “Their first pizza shop was in South Ealing Rd. I took the boys there when they were little. They opened here last summer” Annie says. There are some 40 businesses in the old soap factory building now. It’s a huge space, with the Duke of London showrooms at the front, a coffee shop, a wine bar selling naturally aspirated wines and the Santa Maria pizza restaurant above. Tucked away in the back there are also fashion brands, a Burlesque costumier, a seamstress and a tailor about to open. There’s also a cobbler, a bicycle repair shop and an e-bike shop.

The shiny silver caravan out front belongs to Timothy David, the hair stylist who has actress Gillian Anderson amongst his clients. That was supposed to be hush hush, says Merlin, but then she very generously tweeted about it. In September Catherine Wheel Rd was the focus of the ‘Creative Mile’ – more than 60 artists showing their work in several different venues in Brentford over one weekend.

Johnson’s Island Catherine Wheel Rd leads to Johnson’s Island, accessed by a footbridge, where there’s a permanent artists’ collective who regularly open their studios to show their work. Among them is collage artist Sam Dodson, a former band member of Loop Guru and the Transmitters; his work has appeared on album sleeves and has been featured in books and magazines on Dada and Surrealism.

Developers Ballymore are planning open air markets for the autumn and Annie has scheduled a programme of live music, which you can find details of by ringing the pub on 0208 568 6006 or visiting the website: www.brewery-tap.co.uk. f @outandaboutmagazines

AFGHANISTAN REFUGEES

A WEST LONDON

Welcome

Greeting refugees from Afghanistan West London has been at the forefront of greeting refugees from Afghanistan.

(ACAA) based in Feltham, were determined to step up and fill the gaps.

After the fall of Kabul those who managed to get on a plane and out to the UK were first of all billeted in hotels around Heathrow for quarantine.

Both launched fundraising campaigns and mobilised to collect bags of clothing, shoes and toiletries. Dr Nasimi, founder of the ACAA, said:

The Home Office then settled them in hotels around west London where a lot of the rooms which remained empty during the pandemic have been taken up to house refugees temporarily. The newspapers were full of stories about the rather lukewarm reception, lacking the most basic provisions of things like toothpaste and nappies, but once they were out of quarantine charities such as West London Welcome and the Afghan and Central Asian Association,

18

‘The situation in Afghanistan is shocking. But people shouldn’t feel paralysed by the scale of the situation. We need your help now to help the Afghan people. There are lots of ways you can help – donating money, time or other resources like clothes. You can make a big difference to helping Afghans settle and integrate in this wonderful country.’ They are always after volunteers, especially those with experience

f @outandaboutmagazines

@outaboutmag

in administration, fund raising, immigration issues and advocacy. The community of west London has responded and they’ve received van loads of stuff, but the dilemma for charities is always whether it is the right stuff and what to do with the bags and boxes of donations which aren’t suitable. People’s needs change. West London Welcome supports refugees, from anywhere, with food, clothing, friendship and advice. Having received their first coach loads of refugees on Saturday 11 September and assessed the initial need they were looking for ‘shoes, especially trainers and pumps of all sizes, clothes for girls and boys aged 9+ and bras and knickers for teenage girls (new)’. www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk

AFGHANISTAN REFUGEES The fact that they have to say (new) after listing underwear gives you an idea of some of the more unsuitable clothing they sometimes receive. “It’s a privilege to be welcoming newly-arriving Afghan refugees into our community in West London this afternoon. We’re greeting them with lots of treats, information in Farsi/Dari/ Pashto, and smiles” said Director of West London Welcome Joanne MacInnes. ‘Shout out to our volunteers today who gave a warm, heartfelt

welcome & spent eight hours assisting people, carrying luggage, passing out treats, translating for our advice team & even taking kids to parks. Huge respect for our Afghans friends for their bravery, strength & resilience’. As the refugees arrived they were short of Pashto speakers and looking for volunteers to help with translation. As you read this now, they may be looking urgently for something else.

Based in the high arching Narthex of St Paul’s, the original church before it’s modern redesign in 1990, guests find a light and airy safe space with fabulous coffee and delicious treats from Jo; if you need further persuasion she’s the sugarcrafter supreme behind Jo Cheung’s Cakes.

The café has a variety of seating and meeting space options, a quiet play area (with story & songs in Kids Cafe on a Tuesday morning) and an area where you could work from home, free from domestic distractions. You may even find yourself fortunate enough to visit on a day that they are serving our very own warm Cinnamon Swirls supplied due to high demand! If you’d like to learn how to bake these delicious treats we are running lots of bread courses throughout October, both online and in person. We can even train you to open your own micro bakery… Moving into November, we help you prepare early with the first of our Christmas courses. If you’d like to get ahead with your festive baking or plan to create homemade hampers of treats, we

can help you celebrate in style. We invite you to join us on Stir Up Sunday, 21st November, as we share the secrets of our award winning Christmas Puddings and, looking ahead, our popular Christmas Wreath courses run both online and in person the first week of December.

All courses, virtual & face to face, can be found at HenCorner.com
