WELCOME

For the first time in more than 60 years there has been a change in the route of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Full story pg 6 Pic courtesy of Bonhams

We have hit November. A whirlwind month of colour, sounds and seasonal delights. The temperature may have dialled down a notch, and the days become shorter, but there is plenty to tempt you outdoors.

EDITOR’S TIPS

Catch the spectacle that is the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on November 5. More than 400 cars, all pre-dating 1905, will be making their annual 60-mile pilgrimage to the south coast.

White Witch

If you go down to the woods today you might stumble across the latest addition to Banstead’s Narnia trail. The imposing wood carving of the White Witch from C.S. Lewis’s fantasy tale, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, has recently been installed at Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs Nature Reserve.

Anniversary concert

It’s 25 years since Impromptu Ladies Choir first got together. To celebrate, the award-winning choir are performing an evening of seasonal songs at St Paul’s Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam, on December 2. Tickets available on the door or in advance at impromptutickets16@gmail.com

The Run, the world’s longest running motoring event, commemorates the passing of the Locomotives on the Highway Act in November 1896, which gave birth to British motoring. This year – for the first time in more than 60 years – the route has been diverted to Reigate and the convoy of cars will be travelling along the A217. Fireworks displays will be lighting up the skies across Surrey – we have a list of where to go. It’s almost panto season – oh yes it is! We meet the cast of Cinderella, which opens at Epsom Playhouse next month, as they start rehearsals for the show. And if you are stuck for ideas on what to buy family and friends for Christmas then we have done some of the hard work for you, seek inspiration from our gift guide.

WW1 walks

There will be a rare opportunity to hear stories of soldiers from Sutton who fought and died in the Great War this November. Guided walks of Sutton cemetery, led by Chas Bailey, will be held at 2pm on November 14 and 18. As well as detailing the stories of the men who served on the frontline, the tours will also touch on the stories of those who served the borough and war effort at home. Spaces are limited, to book visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sutton-cemetery-walk-tickets-38533801638

Finally, congratulations to the shortlisted finalists in the 2017 Epsom and Ewell Business Awards. We are proud to support the awards, which recognise the enterprising businesses which contribute to our communities. Have a fabulous festive season.

Cats

Winner of 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Cats has captivated audiences around the world and spawned one of the most famous songs in musical theatre, ‘Memory’. Sutton Theatre Company’s production comes to Epsom Playhouse for a four-night run starting on November 8. www.epsomplayhouse.co.uk

VETERAN CAR RUN

Vintage MOTORING

Chance to see classic vehicles on London to Brighton run as route changes for first time in more than 60 years

As dawn breaks on November 5, a red flag will be ceremoniously ripped up and a convoy of vintage vehicles will start their annual 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Brighton. The Bonhams Veteran Car Run, supported by Hiscox, celebrates the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act in November 1896. It was this Act that raised the speed limit for “light locomotives” from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to

follow a man on foot holding a red flag – the birth of motoring in the UK. Thirty pioneer motorists took part in the Emancipation Run in November 1896, the precursor to today’s Veteran Car Run, and took the first legal journey on English roads. In keeping with tradition, the car run will take place on the first Sunday of November, which this year falls on November 5. Participants will be taking an alternative route, which will see the

vehicles pass Cheam, Banstead and Tadworth on the A217 as they make their way to the south coast. It is the first time in 60 years that the route has been significantly altered to avoid roadworks taking place in Brixton. Clerk of the Course Neil Carr-Jones said: “Although this alternative route will add about four miles to the overall length of the journey, we feel it will be easier on the cars and, thanks to greater stretches of dual carriageway along the A217, modern traffic and the faster veterans will be able to overtake the slower cars more easily.” More than 400 vehicles, all made pre-1905, have entered this year’s coast to capital run, including a large contingent of cars constructed in France. While Germany is generally considered to be the birthplace of the motor car, it was the French who accelerated the concept of the horseless carriage. This year’s run has adopted a French theme in honour of the country’s contribution to motoring. One of the special entries is an early 2.5hp twin-cylinder Peugeot Type 3 with chassis number 25.

www.outandabout.media

VETERAN CAR RUN The time trial will start half way through the run in Crawley and finishes 13 miles later at a checkpoint at Burgess Hill, Sussex. Before they leave London, each entrant will nominate the average speed they think they will maintain over the 13 miles – which range from 8mph to 18mph. If no speed is nominated, the default average speed will be set at 12mph. The car and driver that gets closest to its nominated average speed will win a Chopard Mille Miglia Chronograph, worth £4,900. “Although there’s only 12 years between the youngest and oldest cars on the event, engineering development made rapid progress and the difference in the performance of these vehicles is huge. By setting an average speed over a set distance, the Chopard Regularity Time Trial equalises that difference and instead rewards the skills of the person behind the wheel… or the tiller,” said Peter Read, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club’s Motoring Committee. Originally owned by wealthy textile industrialist, Gaetano Rossi, the Peugeot is the first car to be driven on Italian soil. Although not a race, there is a competitive element to the car run – a Royal Automobile Club event.

L@outandabout_mag

Introduced in 2014, the Chopard Regularity Time Trial pits the wits of the drivers and their passengers against the sands of time. This year a record 313 vehicles – 75 per cent of all the runners – will be entering the time trial.

www.outandabout.media

Spectators will be able to see the cars as they make their way along the 2017 route and cheer on the motorists between 7.35am and 11am.

FIREWORKS

REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF

November Wrap up and head to one of these fireworks displays to celebrate Bonfire Night

The skies will be illuminated with spectacular colours this weekend as fireworks displays take place across Surrey to mark Bonfire Night. November 5 – which this year falls on a Sunday – traditionally marks the anniversary of the foiled Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James 1. Here’s where to see organised displays. Epsom

Kicking off with a Spanish-style Mascleta, Epsom’s fireworks fiesta is billed as its biggest and most ambitious yet. This year’s display has been designed alongside Illusion Fireworks and is set to dazzle with vivid colours and amazing sound effects. There will also be a funfair at Hook Road Arena on Saturday, November 4. A free park and ride service will run

10

from Chessington Garden Centre, Longmead Industrial Estate and Hobbledown Children’s Farm. As well as free coach transport from Epsom and Tolworth train stations between 5pm and 9.45pm, with the last pick up at 7pm. Gates open at 5.30pm with the display at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 in advance, available from local outlets listed on the official website, or £7.50 on the gate (cash only). Under 5s are free. The event is run by the 7th Epsom (Methodist) Scout Group and money raised will be shared between local charities.

www.epsomfireworks.com Carshalton

Not one, but two reasons to celebrate at Carshalton Fireworks as it turns 60. Organised by Wallington and Carshalton Round Table, the familyfriendly display regularly attracts in excess of 10,000 spectators. Live music from folk band Dirty

Spoons and Arts One Rocks, a group of musicians from Glenthorne High School, will set the stage for the display, which starts at 7pm at Carshalton Park. The bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm. Gates open at 5pm. Entry by programme only, £6 in advance or £10 on the day. Under fives are free. Proceeds will be donated to local organisations and charities.

Banstead Cricket Club's 175 this year and it is rounding off a year of celebrations with its annual fireworks display on November 4. Expect an evening of music, food and drink as well as a dazzling display.

ADVERTORIAL

DO YOU OWN YOUR

property? Hilary Beckitt guides us through the pitfalls.

One of the questions which frequently comes across my desk is that of ownership of land. A typical example is that I can be instructed by a seller, obtain the title plan to the property being sold from the Land Registry and when I show it to them they realise that in fact it does not correctly reflect the true extent of the property. They mention that when they purchased the property many years ago they realised that there was a disused area of the rear of the property and over time have made it part of the garden by planting conifers around the edges and building a garden shed. Nobody has raised any objections at all but certainly the buyer and the buyer’s solicitors will be raising enquiries as to the status of that area. They will be said legally to be in “adverse possession” and it will be my job to advise them on this issue. So, what is adverse possession?

Adverse possession is the means by which a squatter can obtain title to land. The principle is that if an owner of land fails to remove a squatter within a certain period of time then the owner loses their title to the land and is barred from subsequently asserting a claim to the land. At first sight, it may seem surprising that the law should allow people to obtain title to land just by occupying it for a long time, but the reason is to protect innocent third parties and oblige owners of land to check on their land at least once in every 12 years to ensure that no unauthorised person is in occupation.

12

What must the squatter show?

• They have factual possession of the land and deal with it as if it where their own by e.g. planting trees, carrying out building works, parking a vehicle within a defined space etc. • Have the necessary intention to possess the land, • Be in possession without the owner’s consent, and • Have been in possession for the requisite period of time. What is the “requisite period of time”?

Where land is unregistered, the squatter can acquire title by adverse possession of the land which is usually 12 years from the date upon which the right of action accrued. This date will be the day when the squatter went into occupation of the land with the intention to possess. The time limit is extended to 30 years for Crown land and land owned by the Church of England. Where land is registered the squatter no longer automatically acquires ownership after being in possession for the required period and instead must apply to the Land Registry to become an owner. In this case the squatter must show that they have been in adverse possession for the period of 10 years ending on the date of the application. The Land Registry will then notify the registered proprietor that an application has been made and if an objection is raised a procedure has to be followed to satisfy the Land Registry that such an application is warranted.

L@outandabout_mag

www.outandabout.media

ADVERTORIAL Some practical advice to ensure that you are protected against a claim for adverse possession:

• Inspect your property regularly to ensure nobody is using it. • Make sure that the Land Registry has your current address shown on the proprietorship register. If then the Land Registry receive an application by a squatter you can be sure to be notified and be given the opportunity to defeat any such claim. • If you are concerned that your boundaries are not clear there is a procedure at the Land Registry for the boundaries to be fixed. BELLE OF THE BALL Meet the cast of Epsom Playhouse’s enchanting Christmas panto, Cinderella It’s nearly that time of year – oh yes it is! With the festive season looming into view, it is time to turn our attention to that most British of Christmas traditions – pantomime. We caught up with the cast of Epsom Playhouse’s panto, Cinderella, ahead of rehearsals for the show, which promises a sprinkling of magic and some special 3D effects. Amy Burrows and Titus Rowe star as Cinderella and Prince Charming. The pair played the lead roles in Beauty and the Beast in Bognor Regis last year. “This will be my third Prince Charming,” said Titus. “He is the prince of all princes. “The first time I played the role I was 18. Every one is so different, I like to think that every time you play a role you develop it a bit further.” Returning to Epsom after their star turns in last year’s panto Aladdin, are Andrew Goddard and Mark Hudson, who will be bringing plenty of sass, comedy and more than a touch of wickedness to their roles as the Ugly Sisters.

Comedian Herbie Adams, Riley Clarke and Kate Richards complete the cast.

Cinderella, Epsom Playhouse, December 15-January 7, www.epsomplayhouse.co.uk Panto round-up

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a pantomime, and if one reworking of a classic fairytale isn’t enough to get you in the festive spirit, then take a look at what else is on. Cinderfella

Ewell Grove Players will be breaking all the panto rules with their take on Cinders’ rag-to-riches story. Performances at 2pm and 5pm on December 2 at Bourne Hall, Ewell. Tickets £6, with all proceeds to the Friends of Ewell Grove to help fund the new Ewell Grove Primary School hall.

Email cinderfella2017@gmail.com Hansel and Gretel

There will be plenty of fun, laughter and mischief as Hansel and Gretel gets the panto treatment, courtesy of The Woodfield Entertainers. The cast will be performing a three-night run at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall from December 14, with a matinee performance on December 16.

www.woodfieldentertainers.co.uk Jack and the Beanstalk

Fe-fi-fo-fum, trouble lies ahead for Jack when he scales the heights of the magic beanstalk in this tall tale. Starring Tom Beard and a cast including young performers from Leatherhead, this magical production will include plenty of gags, boos and hisses and a bit of puppetry.

Leatherhead Theatre, December 20-30, tickets from £12.50, visit www.theleatherheadtheatre.org

“It’s a demanding part,” said Andrew, “the heels are a killer, but you channel that pain into making the children boo!” Mark added: “I’m excited to be back in Epsom and being an Ugly Sister. We will be evil personified.” Actor and comedian Matthew McVarish is looking forward to returning to panto and playing Cinderella’s best pal, the loveable Buttons: "I love that I get to speak to the kids and I love when theatre goes wrong. The beauty of panto is that you get to laugh when it goes wrong.”

EPSOM SPORTS AWARDS

GOLDEN YEAR FOR SPORT

working coaches, committed volunteers and pro-active sports clubs.

Endeavours recognised at annual awards

Councillor Barry Nash, chairman of the community and wellbeing committee, said: “The awards are a great opportunity to recognise and reward our talented local athletes, coaches, volunteers, teams and clubs for their outstanding achievements in sport over the past 12 months.

A fantastic year of sporting achievement at Blenheim High School was capped with two trophies at the 2017 Epsom and Ewell Sports Awards.

"Everyone nominated for an award should feel extremely proud to be shortlisted. It is a fantastic achievement and you are all a credit to our borough. Congratulations.”

The school’s U13 girls’ football team were named Young Sports Team of the Year, while student Tyri Donovan was crowned Young Sports Personality of the Year in recognition of his progress in the 400m hurdles.

All of the winners will go to through to the assessment panel for the county-wide Surrey Sports Awards 2017. The shortlist for the county awards will be announced in November.

Tyri only started hurdling in 2016, but has already won a bronze medal in the England U20 Athletics championships and represented England South at the Welsh U20 outdoor international event – and won his event. Blenheim High School’s head of PE paid tribute to Tyri saying he was a name to watch in the future. And he congratulated the girls’ football squad, saying: “The success has been great this year, but also the girls’ commitment to weekly training sessions in all weathers and their commitment to each other, so they didn’t let each other down, has been overwhelming. Their success has been fantastic and more special as some of the students were not even playing regular football before this year.” They were among more than 150 guests at Epsom Racecourse, including Rio 2016 Paralympics bronze medallist Alexandra Rickham, and Epsom-based horse trainer Laura Mongan. The awards are organised by Epsom and Ewell Borough Council in partnership with Epsom and Ewell Sports and Leisure Council and showcase the talents of athletes, hard-

LOCAL HISTORY

REMEMBERING WAR HERO Military re-enactors will march through Epsom in ceremony to mark restoration of soldier’s grave On December 9, 1879, crowds lined the streets in Epsom as a funeral cortege carried Lieutenant Colonel Francis Vernon Northey to his final resting place. The officer, who had served with the 3rd Battalion of the 60th Rifles, had been fatally wounded at the Battle of Gingindlovu in the Anglo-Zulu War. During the battle, Lt Col Northey had been commanding six companies of the 3rd Battalion of the 60th Rifles. They formed the rear division. On April 2, 1879, the British troops were surrounded by Zulus at dawn. The troop’s defences held tight. Lt Col Northey had been standing by a Gatling gun, leading his men, when he was hit in the shoulder. A surgeon managed to remove the bullet but a severed artery was not detected. Shortly after, Lt Col Northey collapsed. He died four days later on April 6, 1879. He was buried on the battlefield alongside other casualties of the conflict. Wood taken from a biscuit box was used to simply mark his grave. Some months later Lt Col Northey’s body was repatriated along with the original grave marker. The grave marker was recovered some years ago and has been in the safekeeping of Bourne Hall Museum, which has had it conserved.

26

On December 9, a reproduction of the marker will be returned to Lt Col Northey’s grave in Epsom Cemetery. Military re-enactors will march through Epsom following the original route of the funeral procession from Christ Church, West Hill, to the cemetery in Ashley Road. The march will start at 11am, it will pause in the town centre, where the significance of the event will be explained to those watching, before continuing to the cemetery. At the cemetery there will be a service of blessing for the reinstated grave followed by a talk in the cemetery chapel. The chapel will host a display, which will include Lt Col Northey’s original grave marker, until 3.30pm. For more information contact David Brooks at Bourne Hall Museum on 020 8394 1734. Places are limited on the guided walk, book by calling 020 8394 1734 or email dbrooks@epsom-ewell.gov.uk.

SUTTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

WE DON'T JUST EAT BREAKFAST! Why you should join Sutton’s Chamber of Commerce. But that's not all; we meet regularly with colleagues from other Chambers of Commerce across London to put forward one business voice to regional and central government. We also meet regularly with other stakeholders to ensure Sutton, and its business community, is on the radar of the Mayor of London and others, including the London Chamber of Commerce, London First and the Bank of England.

I was asked the other day what Sutton Chamber does, and I have to admit I was rather taken aback. But before I had the chance to respond my inquisitor had followed up with her own answer, 'it's just networking breakfasts isn't it?'. My answer was 'no', we do a lot more than that'. I explained everything that we do and how we help businesses across the borough, but that conversation did get me thinking about how we promote Sutton Chamber.

The benefit of our work is not always immediate or tangible, but we constantly strive to support Sutton and its business community. If you would like to know more about what we do and how we can help your business why please do get in touch.

www.suttonchamber.co.uk

Membership from £72.00 per year

Over one hundred years ago I imagine the businessmen of the town would probably have all been members of the Chamber, and would have met once a week to agree trades and transactions for the following week. The Chamber would have been integral to the act of commerce in Sutton. Today, of course, things are very different, and the Chamber certainly is. An essential element of our offer to businesses is the opportunity for regular networking. People do business with people, even in spite of the rise in e-commerce, and I know our members value the opportunity to meet, catch up, and work together. But to return to the title of this article, that's not all we do. Businesses across the borough (whether they are members or not) can benefit from our subsidised workshops and training seminars. We offer one-to-one sessions with a business advisor who can help review your business and work with you to identify opportunities from growth and development. Since 2012 we have organised the Sutton Business Awards to help identify and reward the best businesses in the borough for their achievements and hard work. In 2016 we hosted the inaugural Sutton Expo, attended by over 400 guests and 45 exhibitors; we also hosted the first of what is to become a regular Leaders' Forum to bring together the key influencers and business leaders in the borough to help shape and inform the work undertaken by Sutton Council on behalf of business.

They will be treading the boards at Leatherhead Theatre in November as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

Among the schools taking part are Ewell Castle Senior School, Epsom and Ewell High School and City of London Freeman’s School, Ashtead. Pupils will perform abridged versions of Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

The festival, run by Shakespeare Schools Foundation, has grown from working with just a handful of schools when it launched in 2000, to now involving up to 30,000 pupils from more than 1,000 schools. They are set to perform in 136 theatres across the UK, marking the enduring legacy of Shakespeare’s work. “We know that actively engaging with these plays – as they were intended, said not read – is the most astounding route to confidence that there is,” said Ruth Brock, chief executive of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation.

STRONG FOUNDATIONS FOR HAPPY

Learners

Vicky Ellis, the school’s Headteacher, writes about what parents can expect from the school – learning at Banstead Prep

“As an Early Years specialist by background, I place great importance on giving our youngest children an appetite for learning by ensuring that everything they do in the classroom excites them and feeds their minds through opportunities to try new things.

For many parents, prep school is the launch pad for 11+, scholarship exams, grammar school entry or other forms of secondary education but I think it should be far more than that. Throughout their experience at Banstead Prep, girls and boys will be invited and encouraged to learn about the sciences, language and culture whilst developing their own selfconfidence and mastering their reading, writing and maths skills. We are so fortunate that we have the facilities to make this happen and the specialist subject teachers to provide a curriculum that goes far beyond what most prep schools can offer. Our pupils will then progress to their secondary school of choice knowing that they will thrive there – whatever their interests.” For more information, please contact Adrienne Forster, head of admissions on 01737 363600 or admissions@bansteadprep.com
