Growing up there was one television programme that has it all – drama, comedy, characters to love (and some to scare you witless) and a space age storyline that is still going strong more than 50 years later.
EDITOR’S TIPS The first Brexiteer?
As politicians grapple with the task of what lies ahead during Brexit negotiations with the European Union, historian David Starkey asks if we have been here before. The political commentator will argue that Henry VIII’s Reformation was the first Brexit, with the monarch’s ministers devising the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. In his lecture Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry VIII’s reign on the one hand, and his insights as a leading commentator on modern politics on the other, to illuminate both the Tudor age and our own. World premiere
He’s an accomplished writer, actor, comedian and presenter. Now Stephen Fry is taking his first foray into the musical world having penned the libretto for the world premiere of Surrey Opera’s The Life to Come, an opera in two acts based on a short story by novelist E M Forster. With music by composer Louis Mander, the opera is a story of fated love between an African prince and a British Missionary set in colonial Africa. The premiere will take place at the Harlequin Theatre, Redhill, on September 28 and 29, with further performances at Trinity School Theatre, Croydon, on October 29.
As Dr Who prepares for its next regeneration – in the shape of Jodie Whittaker – we catch up with actor John Leeson, the voice of the Time Lord’s four-legged companion, K9. He talks about his time-travelling career ahead of a one-off event at Epsom Playhouse on October 1 to mark the 40th anniversary of K9's first TV appearance. And for fans of the hit sci-fi show there will also be a chance to meet cast and crew as well as the fourth and fifth doctors, Peter Davison and Colin Baker. The onset of autumn also provides plenty of opportunity to get out and enjoy the changing season with all its colours. Discover historic sites – some not normally open to the public – in this year’s Open Heritage Days, which runs from September 7. Or head to the woods and follow the new Narnia-themed trail in search of characters from C. S. Lewis’s children’s books. And, if you're feeling brave, why not take a walk on Ewell's dark side this Halloween as its secrets are unearthed – just don’t get left behind! Happy reading

LOCAL HISTORY
ADVENTURES IN NARNIA New woodland trail brings iconic characters from C.S. Lewis’s children’s tale to life Step through the wardrobe and be whisked away to a magical land inspired by C.S. Lewis’s fantasy tale the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Visitors can see Aslan the Lion, spot Lucy Pevensey waiting by the lamppost, and even walk through the wardrobe entrance to Narnia, complete with hanging coats, on a new woodland trail at Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs Nature Reserve. It features statues of characters from the much-loved series, carved from the site’s natural resources by chainsaw sculptor Ella Fielding, of The Tree Pirates. It is hoped that more sculptures will be added as funding becomes available. The trail was installed by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council’s Greenspaces team with permission from The CS Lewis Company Ltd. Carved posts depicting the site's special flora and fauna mark out the route, which takes about half an hour to complete.
6
“Children will be able to step through the wardrobe and discover characters from C S Lewis’s famous book, while also discovering the site’s wonderful flora and fauna”, said Councillor Dr Lynne Hack, deputy leader and executive member for environment. “Chipstead Downs and Banstead Woods boast some of the finest views in the North Downs and is already popular with ramblers, dog walkers and nature lovers. By creating this magical trail, the council hopes to encourage more people, particularly children and families, to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.” The official opening of the trail coincided with Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs being designated a nature reserve for its ancient woodland and rare chalk grassland habitats and species which are in significant decline nationally. Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs has a long and fascinating history. It was alluded to in the Domesday Book 1086 and has been
in the ownership of kings and queens of England, Knights of the Realm, the founder of Barings Bank and a number of other interesting people over the years.

OF TALENT
Artist Sally Pestridge reveals what inspires her to pick up her paintbrushes
“I have been painting since my first ‘Painting by Numbers’ at about 9 or 10 years of age. I simply fell in love with the colours. Being an only child, I could immerse myself for hours, uninterrupted, in perfect bliss,” says artist Sally Pestridge. Having studied art and pottery at A level, art college beckoned. Love, marriage and children intervened, however, and artistic plans were temporarily put on hold. While her children were growing up, Sally enrolled on a number of art classes, falling in love with painting with watercolours after attending a course at SCOLA, now Sutton College. “With the help of a fantastic tutor, my life changed with this medium,” she said. “I was totally hooked! It was so exciting, the way the paint works, the colours, the transparency and the vibrancy that can be achieved.
She continues to develop as an artist, experimenting with different materials and techniques, and enjoys being a member of some local art groups. Now retired and with a studio at home, Sally says she has the time, space and motivation to paint and is always on the look out for new subjects. “In 2011, I went on an art safari to Malawi and Zambia. What a fantastic experience to actually paint in the wild. I’m now the proud owner of a fabulous sketchbook, and even now I have
numerous paintings of that subject, all the time experimenting, trying different approaches and media before I eventually settle on the final painting.” Sally’s work will be on display at Banstead Art Group’s annual exhibition, which runs from October 26 to 28 at Banstead Community Hall, Park Road, Banstead. Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Councillor Roger Newstead, will officially open the exhibition – marking the art group’s 60th anniversary – which will feature more than 200 paintings by some 50 artists. There will be a chance to meet and talk to the artists from 6pm to 8pm on the opening day of the exhibition as well as buy original art works.
www.bansteadartgroup.com plenty of material for future paintings. I’m also lucky enough to have travelled quite widely, to exciting places such as Australia, Africa, Texas, India, Italy and Russia. So I have plenty more material just waiting for my brushes. “However, I’m constantly searching for new subjects and I take my sketch books and camera whilst out and about. Usually, when I hit on a subject that I find interesting, I will paint

GO FOR GOLD Who will be crowned Sutton’s business of the year? Winning an award can help your business stand out from its competitors – that’s the message from the organisers of Sutton’s prestigious business awards. The awards, which were formally launched on June 29 at Sutton’s Business Expo, attract hundreds of entries each year, but time is running out to stake your claim in the 2017 competition. Now in their sixth year, the awards aim to recognise and reward the achievements of companies of all sectors and sizes. They are organised by Sutton Chamber of Commerce, in association with headline sponsor CNM Estates. David Duncan, chairman of Sutton Chamber of Commerce, urged businesses to enter. He said: “I continue to be very impressed with the quality, enthusiasm and passion of the businesses that enter these awards. “These awards demonstrate that Sutton is an exciting place to work and recognition from these awards can make a difference when securing new customers and new business. Applications are welcome from all local businesses in the borough, large and small, and there is no limit to the number of categories that can be entered.”
12
The 12 award categories include a new Green Award for those businesses that are actively working to be more sustainable and reduce their environmental impact and an award for Sutton’s Business Champion. Finalists will be invited to a gala awards ceremony which will be a glittering celebration of commercial excellence, innovation and entrepreneurial flair. More than 150 guests are expected at the black tie event on November 16, for a sparkling champagne reception, sumptuous three course dinner, awards ceremony and a band at the after-party. ADVERTORIAL XXXXX
Will
IS YOUR UP TO DATE?
Katherine Carroll, of Epsom's Peacock & Co, shares her legal tips
Have you put a will in place? Two out of three people haven’t so you wouldn't be alone. If you have done a will, great, but is it up to date? A will is an important document and something that requires thought. Here are 10 good reasons for making, or reviewing, your will: 1. Don’t rely on outdated Intestacy Rules formulated in 1925: Without a will, your estate is intestate. Society has changed quite a bit since 1925 and these rules only provide for nearest relatives in order, failing which your estate could pass to the Crown. The rules do not provide for unmarried couples, stepchildren or friends. 2. Providing for a spouse, civil partner: Without a will it is not definite that they will inherit your entire estate and this depends on whether you have children, the value of your estate and how the assets are owned. 3. You decide who benefits from your estate: You can leave sums of money to friends, godchildren or charities. 4. Appointing guardians for young children: Guardians look after your children until they are 18. Without this, the decision is made by a court and could cause family disputes. 5. Choosing executors/trustees: You can decide who
18
should deal with all the paperwork. For example, you may want friends involved or professionals. They will also manage the financial side for any young beneficiaries. 6. Providing for young children: Under intestacy minors inherit at 18, which is quite young to handle the responsibility. With a will, you can specify a later age, say 21 or 25 with your trustees acting in a parental role in the finances whilst they are young. 7. Trusts: These are also useful to provide for second marriages or putting a structure in place to provide for vulnerable beneficiaries. 8. Funeral wishes: Although hard to think of, it can be a great help to your executors to know your wishes, from burial to cremation, to organ donation, to flowers and music. 9. Benefit from Inheritance Tax Reliefs: The nil rate band provides £325,000 tax-free. The new residence nil rate band (applies if benefiting direct descendants – children, etc.) gives £100,000 per person extra increasing to £175,000 per person by April 2020. All in all, this could result in estates up to £1m for a couple being tax-free (although the relief is limited for estates over £2m). Other reliefs may also be available. 10. Peace of mind! Get the right will in place and have peace of mind.

WHO’S AT THE PLAYHOUSE
A DOG'S LIFE From crosswords to the new Time Lord, John Leeson shares anecdotes from a career spanning 40 years as Dr Who’s sidekick, K9 It is 40 years since Dr Who’s fourlegged companion, K9, made his first appearance on our TV screens.
blueprints of the dog wearing a tartan collar. I said ‘oh, you want him to be Scottish?’ And he said ‘no’.
Actor John Leeson, the voice of the Doctor’s robotic dog, will be retracing moments from his time-travelling years in a one-off event on October 1 to mark the 40th anniversary of The Invisible En-emy, the episode which introduced K9. He will be also be talking about a career that has seen him wear many ‘hats’ from a question-setter for the BBC’s Mastermind, a wine educator and writer to a magistrate. But it is as the Doctor’s sidekick that he is perhaps best known.
I did a number of voices on tape for them to choose from plus the voice for the virus and heard nothing more until about three weeks later when I got a panicked phone call asking why I hadn’t accepted the parts! In early rehearsals, K9 wasn’t ready. I thought I would run about on all fours being K9 to show where he was supposed to be on set. What that did was it provided a relation-ship (with the fourth Doctor Tom Baker) which was very different to just saying the lines from the sidelines. it was probably the genesis of K9’s move into further stories.
Does it feel strange to be known for the voice of K9?
Do you think Dr Who was ahead of its time?
“The most extraordinary thing, perhaps, was that the character of K9 was originally only in Dr Who for one storyline. They decided that the character was interesting enough, let’s keep him in, and here I am 40 years later. It doesn’t feel like 40 years to me, it’s a bit like time travel.”
Yes, it was science fantasy but done on a shoestring. Your imagination took you through.
Have you been surprised at Dr Who’s popularity since it came back to our screens in 2005?
Delighted and surprised. The sort of response you get at conventions. People come up to me and say ‘you were part of my childhood’. I first played K9 when David Tennant was just six years old. Some of the younger Dr Who’s hadn’t been born. I feel very privileged to be part of it.
How did you land the role?
“Purely by chance. One summer afternoon I went to the pub at the end of my road. I rarely went there. One of the directors I worked with in rep theatre happened to be there. He asked if I was working and when I said no he told me to stay by my phone. Two or three weeks later my agent called to say he had been contacted by the BBC and they wanted me to play two voices in Dr Who. ‘Don’t worry’, he said, ‘they are only in for one story’. I was called in to see the producer. K9 hadn’t been built but he had some

WHO'S AT THE PLAYHOUSE What do you think about the announcement that Jodie Whittaker will be the first female Doctor?
“What a good idea. The Doctor is a sort of iconic figure in any event and can be anyone, can do anything, can be anything – gender doesn’t come into it at all. Every Doctor brings his, or now her, character to the part. We are beholden to the script writers to some extent because they are the trampoline from which we bounce. We shall see what happens next. What’s one of your favourite memories from the show?
I was sent out on location with Tom Baker quite often. We used to always do The Times crossword together. I remember we were on location in Oxfordshire. I was sitting in a BBC
L@outandabout_mag
videotape about half a mile away from where they were filming. I couldn’t see the actors and they couldn’t see me. I was wearing my headphones and I heard the director say in my ear, ‘take five everybody’ and then I heard Tom Baker say ‘John, are you still there? Have you got your Times crossword? What do you think 23 across is?’ We had a conversation for a couple of minutes about it and my voice was being fed down to the location by some speakers. What I didn’t know, what I couldn’t have seen, was all these people who had come to watch the filming were watching Tom Baker sitting on the grass with K9 plonked next to him and they are doing The Times crossword together! Who is your favourite Doctor?
Tom Baker – he is my Doctor. He was madcap, that’s the character he played. For a lot of fans that I meet nowadays that era was at the peak of their viewing, it was so inventive.

WALK ON THE DARK SIDE Dare to discover Ewell’s grisly past this Halloween? All is not what it seems in the village of Ewell. Scratch beneath the surface and tales of mystery, murder and bodysnatchers emerge. Some of the darker secrets from Ewell’s not-so-distant past will be unearthed on a special Halloween walk. The 90-minute tour takes in graveyards, notorious crime scenes and haunted sites and will reveal tales of witches and ghosts. Learn about Ewell’s exploding gunpowder mills and visit the graveyard of St Mary’s where many of the victims lie. Hear about Ewell’s Joan Butt, who was taken to London and tried for being a witch after stories that she bewitched a young maid, only to be found not guilty. Tread in the footsteps of the Resurrection Men, the body snatchers who removed corpses from burial sites, and see where they plied their grisly trade. There will be stories of a funeral without a body, a tragic coach crash and discover why a vicar pulled down his own church. Final stop will be Ewell’s historic jail house and discover firsthand what life in an 18th century prison was like.

Places are limited on the guided walk, book by calling 020 8394 1734 or email dbrooks@epsom-ewell.gov.uk.
Tickets £5. Meet in the foyer at Bourne Hall at 7.30pm.

ARE YOU READY FOR SCHOOL? Girls get to ‘discover school’ in nurturing environment at Sutton High School It is one of the defining moments of all our lives — the day you start ‘proper’ school. The uniform is perfect, the shiny new shoes are ready and everything has its own name label. As a child, it is the anticipation of what lies ahead, the feeling of growing up and time to practise that independence. As a parent, you feel proud, excited and perhaps a little anxious.
The aim is to help make sure you and your child are hopping and skipping down the path when it’s time for the first day!
Find out more at www.suttonhigh.gdst.net/discover-junior-school
At Sutton High School we are in the fortunate position for our girls to ‘discover school’ from six weeks before they turn three years old in our Nursery classes. Girls ‘dip their toe’ into school life through our nurturing learning environment. The girls have qualified teachers in their Nursery classes, along with teaching assistants, and have specialist teachers for music and PE lessons, plus swimming lessons in our school pool. In addition, during autumn term 2017, we will be running music and storytelling events for girls and boys aged two to four, designed to build confidence before starting school.
MEET THE HEAD at Sutton High School for Girls
“It is my privilege to spend every day with inspiring, intelligent girls. Here at Sutton High, we celebrate learning and value academic rigour believing there are no limits to what our girls can achieve within an aspirational and inspirational environment. Our focus is on challenge, engagement and enjoyment in the classroom and beyond, developing ambition and confidence. In a community where relationships are strikingly positive, our girls rise to high expectations of courage, principle and optimism through a wealth of opportunities and encouragement. Come and visit us to experience the buzz of activity and warm welcome – I would love to meet you.”
Sutton High School is an independent day school for girls founded in 1884 by the Girls' Day School Trust. Our aim is to provide an outstanding education and help girls to develop into rounded, confident people, happy and resilient, who can meet and overcome the demands

life will make on them. We achieve an academically rigorous and challenging education for girls within the framework of a caring and supportive community.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF for Freemen’s A Level students City of London Freemen’s School in Ashtead is celebrating excellent A level results, recording some of its best results in the last six years. 31% of all grades achieved were graded A*, an 9% increase on 2016 results. 64% of grades achieved were A*-A, which represents not only 8% more A*/ A grades on 2016, but also a 9 % increase from the AS level results this same cohort achieved last year, despite the second year of A levels being significantly harder than the first. “These results are testament to the hard work that students and dedicated staff have put into this last year,” suggested Headmaster, Roland Martin. “We are fortunate to have a talented group of teachers, supportive parents and ambitious students at Freemen’s and it is a winning combination. Results like these need to be put into the context of a busy School: the accomplishments these same students have made to sport, music, drama and socially in the School, as well as their contributions to the wider community,

are equally noteworthy and we are all very proud of the leavers of 2017.” Bethan Moncur, who gained 4 A*, in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, as well as a BTEC Certificate in Understanding Sports Performance and a BTEC Certificate in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance, credits the teaching staff for getting her through Sixth Form: "The teachers are amazing. They keep you calm and are so supportive. If you need help, there are always teachers there." Bethan particularly struggled with maintaining her confidence: "it is hard to stay confident in your ability and not to doubt yourself, but the teachers made me believe that I could achieve anything I want to achieve. I owe it all to the teachers". Freemen’s has introduced a new curriculum for the Sixth Form which
gives them a broader experience of learning and is about to begin a multimillion pound investment in Sixth Form learning and social spaces with the refurbishment of the Mansion House at the heart of Ashtead Park.

Inspiring
CHILDREN
Challenging young minds fosters love of learning at Banstead Prep Your child’s mind is full of questions. The best schools won’t just answer them, they will inspire even more. “When children go home at the end of a Banstead Prep day, we won’t just challenge our parents to ask them what they did at school — because let’s face it, sometimes getting that
information is hard enough! We want them to find out what questions they asked today and how the answers they received encouraged them to ask many more,” said Vicky Ellis, headteacher at Banstead Prep School The interests we begin to share in our first years of school are often critical in helping shape what we do as adults. At Banstead Prep, your child will benefit from outstanding facilities, a broad curriculum and specialist subject teaching that very few prep schools are able to offer. Whatever your son or daughter’s questions, there will be plenty of people at Banstead Prep to furnish them with answers. And inspire many more.
