RECIPE

PANDIBAKES

Santa hat

CUPCAKE RECIPE Children will love eating these fun and festive cupcake toppers!

METHOD INGREDIENTS • Cupcake & buttercream • Piping bag and piping nozzle or a knife is fine • Rolling pin • Medium sized circle or serrated cookie cutter • White fondant icing or rolling icing • Red fondant icing or rolling icing • Green fondant icing or rolling icing • Tiny holly leaf cutter (not essential)

1. Roll out some of the white icing about 2mm thick and cut out a circle shape for the base, on which your Santa hat will sit on. 2. Roll a small piece of red icing into a cone shape and bend the top of the cone slightly so it looks slightly bent over. 3. Roll some more white icing and use your knife to cut a strip of icing to go around the bottom of the cone, you may want to use a little water to help the icing stick to the cone. 4. Roll a small ball of white icing and again use a small amount of water attach it to the point of the cone. You will now see your Santa hat come to life. 5. Using a little water, attach the Santa hat to the white circle base. 6. Roll out a little piece of green icing and using your holly cutter, if you have one, cut out two green holly leaves. Alternatively, roll two small green balls and flatten them with your finger, pinch the top of them slightly and use your knife to make little lines on them, to look more leaf like.

• A little water

7. Roll three tiny red balls for berries and attach the leaves and berries to the front of the hat with a little water. 8. Pipe the buttercream onto the cupcakes or if you don’t have a piping bag and nozzle, use a knife to spread the buttercream onto the cupcake.

WREATH MAKING

Wreath MAKING

Feeling creative this Christmas Christmas wreaths now decorate front doors to mark Advent, but the history of the wreath predates Christianity. The Greeks and the Romans wore garlands for their festivals and wreaths were hung on ancient pagan altars to deter evil spirits and welcome benevolent ones. The winter solstice, which takes place on 21st December, has been celebrated for thousands of years. Evergreens such as pine branches represent the continuation of life during those darkest days of winter.

This year why not learn to make a traditional Christmas wreath with greenery cut fresh from nature. Items you will need are a wreath ring, scissors, green twine, florist wire and moss. It is nice to experiment with different textured foliage such as spruce, ivory, evergreen oak and buxus. Christmas decorations such as fir cones, dried oranges and cinnamon sticks look great and create a delicious festive aroma. You could also try adding baubles and ribbon to create a textured look.

Working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK, Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis.

Foodbanks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. HOW TO GET HELP If you need help from a foodbank there are a few simple steps to follow. 1. GET A FOODBANK VOUCHER In order to provide the most appropriate help for the circumstances of your situation Trussell Trust work with local agencies. 2. GET IN TOUCH WITH AN AGENCY Agencies they work with include: Citizens Advice, housing support officers, children’s centres, health visitors, social services, some local charities and some local churches. Many agencies are still operating by phone during the Coronavirus outbreak, even if they are not open for visits. They will discuss your situation and supply you with a foodbank voucher where appropriate. 3. BRING YOUR FOODBANK VOUCHER TO YOUR NEAREST FOODBANK CENTRE We have created a list of local foodbank centres for you to visit. You will be welcomed on arrival and trained volunteers will chat with you about your situation. Any dietary needs you may have will be discussed and you can exchange your foodbank voucher for a parcel of three days of emergency food. They will also help to support you in any other ways that they can. www.sutton.foodbank.org.uk www.dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk www.epsomewell.foodbank.org.uk www.trusselltrust.org

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

Decorate YOUR HOUSE

Pia Talbot brings us her ideas for a differently styled Christmas In a year when we have all earned a wonderful Christmas, there is no better time to make your house look as festive as possible. Now, we all have our same old decorations that we get out of the loft every year, but how about a change? For Christmas 2020 switch it up a bit and try a whole theme for your house. There are so many merry ideas that can really make this Christmas go up an entire level.

EARTH Making your home as natural as possible this Christmas is really popular at the moment. Filling your house full of holly and ivy is perfect for this theme and wooden tree ornaments can really up your Christmas tree game! Poinsettias and wreaths galore, this Christmas is all about nature and visiting your local florist is an ideal way to get everything you need to achieve this theme. Try Moonflower in Cobham as they always have amazing bespoke decorations.

COLOUR SCHEME Whether red and green matches your Christmas vibes, or you like to mix it up a bit with a bright colour scheme, sticking to a particular colour theme this year can be so much fun. If keeping the whole house to only a couple of colours is too much, challenge yourself to do just one room and see how far you can get.

ICE It may not snow at Christmas time anymore, but embracing the cold is always the way to go in December. You could hang icicle ornaments on the tree, or even create your own

18

frosty frill to the decorations you already own, there are so many ways (especially DIY) to embody the frozen aura of Christmas. One of the easiest ways to include the whole family in creating these icy decorations is to make paper snowflakes and stick them around the house. Head over to your local stationary shop and pick all of the supplies you need for your snowflakes.

LIGHTS With the days getting shorter and the nights getting darker, light up your house this Christmas with a fantastic display, either outside your house or inside. Try Chessington Garden Centre for all your lit-up decorations as they always have a variety to choose from with their incredible Christmas array. Make your house glow this year and spread that Christmas joy!

SPARKLES Why not bring a bit of glamour into your life this Christmas with some sparkly decorations that are sure to bring some charm into your home? Maybe a sparkly stocking, or bejewelled bauble! By adding some shimmer and twinkle to your decorations this year, the whole house will be shining like a Christmas star guiding you to a happy and healthy Christmas 2020.

‘THE JOURNEY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE DESTINATION’ Declares local artist Joe Norris “I have to thank my mother for encouraging me to journey into art. She gave me her Rowney watercolour paint box and her cherished sable brush when I was ten and showed me how to paint simple washes. Previously, I had only ever used felt pens and powder paints. Watercolours seemed so much more sophisticated and I felt very grown up using them”, he begins. However, it was a visit to Amsterdam that really inspired Joe, marvelling at paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Later, he took inspiration from Van Gogh, Dali, Duchamp and Picasso. “I am fascinated by eccentricity, seeing it as a sign of genius and something to be admired”. At the age of eleven, his grandpa, also a keen amateur painter, gave him a book by Rowland Hilder. “Growing up in Kent meant many of Hilder’s Kentish landscapes, with his ‘easy’ style and expert handling of light, felt very familiar to me”. During those early days, Joe recalls painting a snow scene of a family friend’s house. “I remember feeling pleased with my efforts but was amazed when I’d learnt that she had liked it enough to hang it on her wall!” At the age of fifteen, Joe made his first sale – a pastel, ‘Kent hop poles in the snow’. More sales soon followed. f @outandaboutmagazines

“I was really proud to be asked, and paid, to paint pictures for people I’d never met, who had seen my work displayed in local pubs and restaurants - real commissions!”. Several years of formal art education followed, although Joe admits to often finding art gallery visits intimidating, “…but to actually see the brushstrokes close up and feel the energy and passion of some of my favourite artists, like Rembrandt, Monet and Turner, with their impressionistic styles, was a real joy. I have always been as interested in the process and the inspiration behind the work as I have in the final piece. I learnt early on that I can be easily distracted by outside influences and opinions (I have since found that it’s far more rewarding to trust and follow my own instincts). I now firmly believe that every failure is a step towards your next success.” he reflects. Joe concludes, “I never stop learning and the most important thing for me is to continue painting and to develop my own style. I have often found the journey more rewarding than the destination itself.”

SCHOOL Welcoming a new Headteacher

Banstead Prep School is welcoming a new Headteacher from January 2021. Jon Chesworth, currently Deputy Head at Thomas’ Clapham, is excited to join the community, “Banstead Prep is a dynamic, fun and caring environment that everyone is proud to be a part of and I was convinced it was somewhere I wanted to be from my very first visit.” Jon has been teaching for over 17 years in both prep and senior schools, starting his career in Physical Education and more recently taking a further interest in pastoral care and wellbeing. His ethos is a natural fit for Banstead Prep, a co-educational prep school and nursery for girls and boys aged 2 – 11, which offers a broad, specialist-taught curriculum in senior school standard facilities. “School should be fun. Happy children flourish and happy children learn. I’m passionate about the importance of a broad curriculum, which creates opportunities for children to be excited and truly engaged with their learning and leads naturally to excellent academic progress.”

As for many schools, this year has been a challenging one for BPS. The lockdown meant that staff and children had to suddenly pivot to remote learning for the summer term. Banstead Prep’s approach ensured the children were able to continue their education across the full, broad curriculum whilst taking into account that parents had to balance home learning, often for more than one child, with home working. This placed an equal emphasis on wellbeing, supporting families and keeping the children engaged with school and their learning. Parents were overwhelmingly positive about the experience, with one commenting that “The amount that our son has learnt in the last few weeks is unreal, and though I was quite sceptical about home learning it’s been a huge success”. Jon’s ambition for Banstead Prep is to maintain the school’s current feel – of a community that is small enough to care about everyone – whilst enabling growth that realises the potential of the school’s outstanding learning environment. “I’m genuinely excited about the future of Banstead Prep.”
