in Surrey
Surrey is known for its picturesque landscapes and charming countryside, especially during autumn when the leaves change colour. Here is a list of some of the best places to see autumn colours in Surrey: Painshill Park: Painshill is a beautiful, landscaped garden that comes alive with autumn colours during the season. It features lakes, woodlands, and meadows, offering a lovely setting for a leisurely autumn stroll.
Box Hill: This National Trust site offers panoramic views of the Surrey Hills and is surrounded by woodlands. During autumn, the foliage transforms into a kaleidoscope of colours, making it a great spot for a scenic hike.
Leith Hill: As the highest point in Surrey, Leith Hill rewards visitors with stunning vistas of the surrounding countryside, which are particularly captivating during autumn when the foliage turns golden.
Hatchlands Park: Another National Trust property, Hatchlands Park boasts a beautiful landscape with ancient woodlands that put on a fantastic display of autumn colours.
RHS Garden Wisley: Known for its horticultural excellence, RHS Garden Wisley showcases a variety of trees and plants, which provide a splendid autumn spectacle.
Polesden Lacey: Surrounded by landscaped gardens and a picturesque estate, Polesden Lacey allows visitors a chance to enjoy autumn colors while exploring the beauty of the outdoors.
Remember that the exact timing of autumn foliage can vary each year, so it’s a good idea to check local forecasts and plan your visit accordingly. Also, some of these places may require entry fees or have specific opening hours, so it’s best to check their websites before visiting.
Enjoy your autumn adventures in Surrey!

FeastyFEST
FeastyFest has grown in the last 5 years to become Surrey’s largest not-for-profit food, drink and music festival, now seeing over 18,000 attendees each year. FeastyFest started in 2018 as a way to entice local families to come out and enjoy the food of local, small food producers. But they didn’t just want to supply food. Their ambition was to spread their love and appreciation for food by offering engaging and enjoyable ways to learn about
food, understand where it comes from, and inspire children to try new things. This is why FeastyFest is a not-for-profit festival, with the goal of raising money for those in need in the community. They created a fullday festival-style experience with music and activities – and the local community just loved it. So much so, that attendance at the event has more than tripled in a few years.
Enjoy outstanding street food from all around the world at Grub Hub, they hand select traders who firstly make delicious food but who are also passionate foodies, ask them their story and they will share their love of food.
Quench your thirst with craft beer and cider, small batch producers of gin and spirits at one of the 13 bars.
Get some retail therapy in the produce Market, craft and wellbeing stalls.

WHY RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES ARE BECOMING POPULAR WITH RETIREES
A retirement community, also known as a later living community is a housing development specifically designed for people in later life. These communities typically offer a range of housing options, including independent living apartments, as well as additional amenities and services that promote an active and social lifestyle for residents.
Retirement communities are designed to provide a supportive and engaging environment while also offering various levels of support and assistance based on the individual needs. Many offer a wide array of amenities and services such as a restaurant, bar, landscaped gardens, social and recreational activities, and much more.
The primary goal of a retirement community is to create a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable living environment for older adults, fostering a sense of community and providing opportunities for socialising, intellectual stimulation, and an active lifestyle.
Specialist developer Birchgrove is rapidly growing its portfolio of high-quality retirement communities. One ingredient behind this success is the diverse breadth and depth of experience behind the Birchgrove name. All working together to create a community where people can age well by staying healthier, happier and stronger for longer.
Birchgrove offers its retirement properties solely for rent. There are no stamp duty costs or legal conveyancing fees or stress associated with
purchasing a property. There’s no pressure to buy, and you need only give two months’ notice should you wish to leave.
The Birchgrove rental model covers all the largeticket expenses like energy costs – electricity, heating and water – and many of the rising incidental costs that go along with owning your own home e.g. housekeeping, broadband, window cleaning, gardening, buildings insurance, security and a whole host of other things.
All apartments are specifically designed for people in later life, featuring waist height appliances in the fully fitted kitchens for easy access, en-suite walk-in showers, wide corridors and walkways. Residents have access to exclusive onsite amenities such as a restaurant, bar, club room, a communal terrace, fitness suite, library, landscaped gardens and greenhouse. Regular events and activities programme also contribute to the friendly community lifestyle, and for added peace of mind there is a concierge and 24-hour staff presence. You will never find two Birchgrove retirement developments the same, because they believe the place you call home should be as individual as the people and neighbourhood it sits within. Birchgrove makes sure that every community is not only future-designed to suit people’s needs as they age but has character to complement the local area. Thoughtful spaces that bring people together help forge communities where people feel grounded and at home.

PumpkinCAKE
For the cake
• 300g self-raising flour
• 300g light muscovado sugar
• 3 tsp mixed spice
• 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
• 175g sultanas
• Handful of chopped walnuts
• ½ tsp salt
• 4 eggs, beaten
• 200g butter, melted
• zest 1 orange
• 1 tbsp orange juice
• 500g (peeled weight)
pumpkin or butternut squash
flesh, grated
For drenching and icing
200g pack soft cheese
85g butter, softened
100g icing sugar, sifted
zest 1 orange and juice of half
METHOD
You will need 12 x round tartlet tins about 10cm/ 31/2 inch, some baking parchment and baking beans.
1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease and line a 30 x 20cm baking or small roasting tin with baking paper. Put the flour, sugar, spice, bicarbonate of soda, sultanas, walnuts, and salt into a large bowl and stir to combine.
2. Beat the eggs into the melted butter, stir in the orange zest and juice, then pour into the dry ingredients until well combined. Stir in the pumpkin. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for 30 minutes, or until golden and springy to the touch.
3. To make the icing, beat together the cheese, butter, icing sugar, orange zest and 1 tsp of the juice until smooth and creamy, then set aside in the fridge. When the cake is done, cool for 5 mins then turn it onto a cooling rack. Prick it all over with a skewer and drizzle with the rest of the orange juice while still warm. Leave to cool completely.
4. Give the icing a quick beat to loosen, then, using a palette knife, spread over the top of the cake evenly. Sprinkle extra chopped walnuts on top for decoration. If you’re making the cake ahead, you can keep it in the fridge then take out as many pieces as you want 30 minutes before serving.

Chinthurst were delighted with the findings of the Independent School Inspectorate who visited the school in February this year. They judged the school to be ‘Excellent in All Areas’, the highest category that can be awarded. The inspectors reported that Chinthurst children were highly confident communicators with exemplary attitudes to learning. They found the school’s pastoral care to be exceptionally strong and the relationships between pupils and teachers excellent. In fact, they were absolutely delighted by the children’s kindness, maturity and happiness.
Chinthurst had even more to celebrate this academic year when they were named 2022 Independent School of the Year for Sporting Achievement. In a competitive field, the judging panel said that Chinthurst stood out. Children enjoy high standards of coaching and playing whatever sport they choose, whatever gender they are, and whatever standard they have reached or natural ability they may have.
Everyone has the chance to develop the essential skills of teamwork and resilience, with a focus firmly on fun!

SEATON HOUSE SCHOOL
Seaton House is an incredibly special place with a family environment created by everyone working together with one single aim; to support our children and help them to become the very best version of themselves! Recently awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools, our assessor reported “this is genuinely a community where everyone knows everyone else, cares about their wellbeing and notices when people need support and are willing to offer it”.
Courtesy and kindness are expected as the norm and our exceptional team of staff encourage our girls to develop initiative, independence, resilience and confidence.
Seaton House is currently ranked 2nd in the Sunday Times Top 100 Prep School in England and it is no coincidence that our girls leave us to attend the very best schools in the area with many girls receiving multiple school offers.
Specialist teachers provide creative and innovative
teaching to students across the school and outstanding academic results are achieved yearon-year. Our most recent ISI inspection found us ‘Excellent’ across all areas.
Fees are very competitive as reported by £/ Schoolsmith Score, who stated that we “offer the best value for money” of Prep schools in Sutton. 15 hours Early Years funding can be accepted in Nursery.
Being a small school with just 20 girls per class, our staff will get to know every child individually, learning their strengths and challenges to ensure every child thrives in all areas of school life.
Wraparound care operates from 7.30am – 6pm and an in-house holiday club runs in the major holidays. A wide-ranging choice of extra-curricular clubs are offered on a daily basis.
To best understand what a friendly, caring and vibrant school we are, come and meet us and let our pupils tell you themselves what makes us so special.
Great News!
93% of our year 6 girls who sat the 11+ were o ered a grammar school place, as well as receiving scholarships from leading independent schools.

EWELL CASTLE SCHOOL, NURSERY & RECEPTION
The Early Years Foundation Stage Department (Nursery and Reception) of our Preparatory School in Ewell Village, is a wonderful blend of academic aspiration and challenge, excellent pastoral care and facilities, inclusivity and offers a real sense of warmth and community.
We provide a calm and caring environment for our young children, and they feel safe and develop a sense of belonging. They have fun as they learn and develop in a well-planned and organised environment, which offers stimulating and rich play opportunities, encourages independence, and supports young children’s own efforts and achievements.
As active, happy young learners, our children enjoy playing and exploring both indoors and outdoors. Through a broad range of planned teaching, child initiated and adult led experiences that include forest school, music, and sport, we encourage our children to become enthusiastic and motivated learners who are confident in developing their ideas and following their individual interests. All our pupils are offered plenty of
opportunities to enhance and showcase their performance skills. Music is taught by one of our specialist teachers on a weekly basis, and we have assemblies and productions throughout the year in which pupils are involved.
All seven areas of learning covered by the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (language, literacy, mathematics, emotional development, physical development, expressive arts and understanding the world) are covered in the curriculum. They are the academic focus in Nursery and Reception, enabling pupils to exceed expectations as well as offering a smooth transition for those pupils continuing to Year 1 or our Prep School.
We use Professor Guy Claxton’s Building Learning Power (BLP) to develop our ‘Language for Learning’ in School and this enables us to engage all pupils in a conversation of how we learn. To do this, we have introduced ‘learning experts,’ in the form of cuddly toy mascots, to reflect each of the four Rs of learning (Resilience, Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness and Reciprocity).
If you would like to visit Ewell Castle Nursery and Reception to find out how your child could thrive and benefit by joining us, please email admissions@ewellcastle.co.uk for more information or book online to attend an open event at www.ewellcastle.co.uk.
