Within a year, she became the club’s first ever Creative Director in its three decade history, bringing a decidedly anti-establishment philosophy to her curatorial style. Her retooled residency program reflects a distinct set of values, adding Honey Soundsystem, DVS1, Regis, Honey Dijon and transgressive events such as Men’s Room to an already diverse offering. Of her philosophy she said, “Dance music needs riot grrrls. Dance music needs Patti Smith. It needs DJ Sprinkles. Dance music needs some discomfort with its euphoria. Dance music needs salt in its wounds. Dance music needs women over the age of 40. Dance needs breastfeeding DJs trying to get their kids to sleep before they have to play. Dance needs cranky queers and teenagers who are really tired of this shit. Dance music needs writers and critics and academics and historians. Dance music needs poor people and people who don’t have the right shoes to get into the club. Dance music needs shirts without collars. Dance music needs people who struggled all week. Dance music needs people that had to come before midnight because they couldn’t afford full admission. Dance music does not need more of the status quo.” A sublime technician behind the decks, The Black Madonna is known for fluent and dynamic vinyl sets, which span from disco to techno. And then of course, there’s her inimitable energy, an infectious joy and ability to connect with the room, which along with her skill has cemented her as a beloved regular and crowd favorite at revered venues such as Panorama Bar. Her DJ mixes for Little White Earbuds and of course Beats In Space remain highly regarded. The latter was named #4 of Resident Advisor’s Top 10 Online Mixes for 2014 and described as, “a kaleidoscopic look on the genre that shows her taste and technical skill in equal measure. She glides through soulful strains, Italo-influenced bangers and some straight-up house… with a touch so light it sounds like the records are playing themselves.” The Black Madonna’s catalog of releases/remixes includes labels such as Argot, Stripped & Chewed, Classic, Freerange and Home Taping is Killing Music. Crosstalk International described her “Lady Of Sorrows EP” on Argot, as “her most fully realized work to date -- A great leap forward from the sample-clad disco house of her records for Home Taping Is Killing Music and Stripped & Chewed. Weaving live orchestration and irresistible synth lines through tough percussive frames, both tracks bare their souls to listeners with enough muscle to command dancers’ attention.” In 2014, she followed up the Argot release with two back to back EP’s. Both sold out immediately and remain highly sought after on the vinyl market.

Spencer Parker is one of Europe’s leading djs, his unique style of house and techno is in demand the world over and his productions, remixes and reedits are regularly supported by names such as Ryan Elliot, Mike Huckaby, Radio Slave, DVS1, Gerd Janson and Zip. Spencer’s musical style is simply described best as, underground house and techno. Preferred record labels range from the techno stylings of Grey Report, Modularz, and Non Series, through to the house sound of White Material, FXHE, and, his own imprint, Work Them Records. A “typical” set from Spencer could include everything from house to techno to disco classics. Now a resident of Berlin, Spencer is best known in the city as a regular guest at Berghain, be it playing house and disco upstairs in Panorama Bar or techno downstairs, on the clubs main floor. Elsewhere in the world, you can often find Spencer manning the decks at clubs such as Womb (Tokyo), Concrete (Paris), Dude Club (Milan) and Dance Tunnel (London). Production wise, Spencer’s main home is now his own Work Them Records label, although he is also widely known as being a large part of Radio Slave’s Rekids title, alongside Mr.G and Nina Kraviz. Recently Spencer also released a series of six limited edition 12’s (and a double cd album) under the name It’s Not Over, on the label of the same name. “We are dedicated to bring about an end to discrimination against LGBTQ people globally and realise a world of fundamental freedom and equality for all.” Released June 16: Rainbow Riots, the album, composed by Petter Wallenberg and featuring queer voices from some of the world’s most dangerous places for LGBTQ people. The first single ‘Equal Rights’ is part of the UN’s ‘Global Goals’ Campaign, released May 17. Rainbow Riots is a new album of music featuring LGBTQ artists from Uganda, Malawi, South Africa and Jamaica – some of the most dangerous countries in the world for LGBTQ people. The album is an eclectic fusion of afrobeat, electro, soul, pop, orchestral, rap, dancehall, gospel and spoken word, composed and produced by Swedish artist and activist, Petter Wallenberg. Rainbow Riots will be the first time most people will hear a Jamaican dance hall artist who is also a gay rights activist. This groundbreaking album will also introduce the listener to the music of a queer rapper from Malawi, a South African gender queer rap crew and a whole array of LGBTQ artists from Uganda – often called the world’s most homophobic country. As one of the Ugandan artists puts it: “Our lives are already in danger – it doesn’t help if we keep quiet.”

Some of the artists featured include Mista Majah P (Jamaica), Brayo Bryans (Uganda), Shivan (Uganda), Kowa Tigs (Uganda), Umlilo (South Africa), and Ivy B (Malawi). Others have chosen to remain anonymous, their involvement with the project posing such a threat in their home country. During the recording of Rainbow Riots, Wallenberg attended Uganda Pride in August 2016, which was subsequently raided by the police. Wallenberg found himself completely immersed in the violent and shocking raid. The incident not only drove the project on, but bearing witness to the atrocities inspired the creation of a charity of the same name: Rainbow Riots is a global charity working for LGBTQ equality and rights. All proceeds from the sales of the album go towards the charity’s work towards ending discrimination against LGBTQ people around the world. Wallenberg said: “Imagine that your very existence is a crime and that the police, authorities and lynch mobs chase you simply because you are who you are. This is reality of LGBTQ people in many countries around the world. I created Rainbow Riots as a movement to fight for freedom against tyranny” The first track to be taken from the album is ‘Equal Rights’ – a song which has been picked up as part of the UN ‘Global Goals’ campaign: an initiative to end extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Rainbow Riots was founded in 2012 by Petter Wallenberg, and artist, author and activist Alexander Bard. The organisation started as a a grass-roots activist movement protesting against a Stockholm booking of Jamaican artist Sizzla whose songs incite killings of LGBTQ people and have been linked to the murders of gay activists in Jamaica. Out of the protest – Rainbow Riots was born. Operating in both Sweden and Uganda, Rainbow Riots is a growing network fighting injustice against LGBTQ people around the world. There are more than a hundred million people living in countries where being a minority with a different sexual orientation is punishable, sometimes by death. We are dedicated to show that LGBTQ people are to be found everywhere, throughout history and are part of our common human narrative. Through the most difficult times LGBTQ people of the world have created a resilient counterculture. This is our heritage and our responsibility as a community – to fight hatred with creativity. Rainbow Riots was born as a protest against hate speech in music and has grown into a movement using music, arts and culture as a tool for empowerment. The Pride in London Festival runs from Saturday 24 June to Sunday 9 July 2017 and will be celebrating all aspects of the LGBT+ community. In 2016 an estimated 1 million people came to Pride in London and in the region of 20,000 people joined the annual Parade, which is the city’s biggest one-day event and one of the world’s biggest LGBT+ celebrations. This year’s Parade takes place on Saturday, 8th July, alongside entertainment and campaigning in Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and across Soho. Since 2014, Pride in London has also mounted social media, PR and advertising campaigns bringing the Pride campaign for LGBT+ equality to massive audiences. This year’s campaign theme of #LoveHappensHere will highlight how love conquers hate. WorldPride Madrid 2017 is the global LGBTIQ Pride festival to be held in the neighbourhood of Chueca and the main streets of Madrid. A great festival to celebrate, discuss and show diversity, culminating in the World Pride Parade, which will be the world’s largest Pride parade ever! Featuring open air concerts, 6 different performing stages, parties, art, culture, sport... and all of them around gay neighbourhood Chueca and the very centre of the city. MADO (Madrid Pride) is a series of street celebrations that take place during the city´s LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) Pride week. The Pride parade is the higlight of this very exciting week and is the world´s largest. The WorldPride demonstration in Madrid 2017 will be a global parade. At the head of the parade will be the Board and all InterPride members and attending delegates will have a reserved space. The manifesto will be read jointly by representatives of Madrid and InterPride Co-Presidents. Madrid Pride is one of the largest prides in the world with nearly 2,000,000 participants and a demonstration with about 1,000,000 attendees. The WorldPride celebration in Madrid will contribute decisively to one of InterPride’s main aims: to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride on an international level. To encourage diverse communities to hold and attend Pride events, WorldPride Madrid 2017 will contribute to continuing and expanding the work done for years in cooperation with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary of State for Latin America, the Institute of Cooperation and the House of America to support the organization of Pride events, equality campaigns, equal marriage and LGBT rights in those countries where they do not exist yet, with particular emphasis on Latin America. WorldPride Madrid 2017 sports a full program of conferences, seminars, workshops as well as cultural and sports activities, and a “kids and family pride” that will act as a source of education. However, the greatest asset of Madrid Pride is having contributed to transforming society and its mentality with regard to the LGBT community. The legacy of WorldPride Madrid 2017 will be an open door to everyone showing a multicultural, diverse and tolerant society. Vonalina is the talent behind so many of the images which have captured the essence of the cultural events over the last few seasons. Her unique ability to capture the atmosphere of the moment, without the intrusion of flash and maintaining its integrity with a minimal approach to post production creates her style which is reminiscent of Leibovitz with the sense of fun of Lachapelle. Where do you get your inspiration from ? I’m inspired by so many things, so many other photographers and ultimately the situation I’m in. Vivian Maier, Ansel Adams, Gary Winogrand, Dorothea Lange, Cindy Sherman, Weegee, Bruce Davidson, Christer Strömholm. (I know I could go on) And closer to home my friend Tony Barrett Powell who has been so kind and generous in his guidance and I’ve learned so much from him.

What kind of camera do you use? I started out doing *proper photography* with a Lumix bridge and it served me very well as a starter, I then went on to Nikon D3100 and I’ve recently upgraded to a Nikon D750, a beast of a camera! How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? I’ve not done much but what I have had used in websites, promo or editorial has been guided by the client but mostly I go on instinct. How important are personal projects to you ? Very! I like to challenge myself a little bit and try new things, I plan to work on my street photography this year...very different from the events I’ve been mostly doing.

How much preparation goes into a shoot? It depends, If I’m doing a show I like to find out a bit about each performer, look at what’s gone before. For a party I find out what kind of crowd it’s going to be and then get stuck in. I like to know the layout of a venue and find my spot so I don’t get in anyone’s way. How much do you do in post production? I like to sharpen, brighten, crop and tidy but I don’t use photoshop or try to alter anyone. I’m a kind editor of course but I want to capture the real thing. Do you think a photographer needs a philosophy to do good work ? I don’t know. In any job i think good manners are a must, I like to know who I’m working with, chat, be quite informal. Among your works, which one is your favourite? Why? Favourites...would you ask me to choose my favourite chid? haha. There are some stand outs though, when going through an edit i sometimes say to myself *yes, that’s a good one*! One of the main images on my site and business cards is from a Silver Factory party for Horseplay with Lydia L’Scabies and Alfie Ordinary as Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol. I do really like that one.

Whose work has influenced you most? It changes all the time, what made me get into photography was photography itself and a never ending quest to get the perfect shot. A somewhat elusive beast at times. I do get obsessed by some though...Vivian Maier and Weegee, such mysterious characters in their own ways and they produced such diverse work. The down at heel, the down and outs, the kids, the glamour and so much more. And Christer Strömholm’s work with Parisian prostitutes and trans workers is remarkable What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? How to do it!!! It took me a long time to get to where I am now with technical skills and I’m learning every day. Describe your photographic style? How did you develop your style? I like strong colours and moody backgrounds. Lighting is always a challenge, but ultimately i want to capture what my eyes see. Sounds simplistic but what I mean is I don’t like to amp it up too much. I enjoy the shapes people make, the lines of their bodies and the facial expressions. I am lucky...I’ve had some incredible subjects in the burlesque drag, LGBTQ and performance scene around Bristol. It’s rich, diverse and incredibly entertaining.
