For me being out at work is crucial - it’s important as a black man to ensure that the stereotypes of gay and black people are challenged and that the myths surrounding race and sexuality can be openly discussed and explored. My role brings me into contact with diverse people from members of all communities working towards even greater understanding of diversity and inclusion. Ensuring that mine and other organisations realise the potential and the benefits of a diverse workforce to our city, one that is inclusive and that equally celebrates the lives of LGB and T people – regardless of our differing journeys.

Exhibition: Hymns From The Bedroom 25-28 NOV – 12:00-5:00pm – The Island / ausformmicrofest15.wordpress.com Ausform is proud to present an exhibition of documentary photographs by Poem Baker. This series of intimate portraits provides a peek into the bedrooms of people Poem met on the streets of London. Running throughout the festival, Hymns from the Bedroom explores the border between public and private personas. Poem Baker is a self-taught photographer based in London, interested in shooting based on instinct. Poem works as a freelance photographer after a 10 year career in theatre and performance art. From the artist: ‘I’m enthralled by the transformative nature of portraiture in its power to both mask and lay bare the human persona. ‘Hymns from the Bedroom’ is a personal journal of friends and people I’ve encountered whilst wandering around London looking for inspiration. These candid, intimate and sometimes subversive portraits also explore related themes of gender, sexuality and relationships, particularly in a sub-cultural context. One of the main catalysts for developing this series of portraits, and the living thread that runs throughout this work, are the relationships I develop with my subjects. I photograph these people again and again, noticing and capturing subtle nuances in their characters, which naturally seep through into the pictures and deepen my ongoing perspective.’

AUSFORM & BEACONS, ICONS AND DYKONS: MAXI’S MAKEUP WORKSHOP ausformmicrofest15.wordpress.com
Maxi More is a performance artist who uses ‘drag’ – a playful approach to make up, fabric and fibers – to undergo transformations. Maxi calls on the power of make believe to break free from the limitations of identity and create an Ultra-Ego. All materials are potential collaborators – Maxi sees no distinction between opulence and grunge, and loves to find glamour in the trash. Join Maxi for a tutorial in make believe, a whistle stop tour of how to do a ‘drag’ face, your way. Bring your own make up, and any bits and bobs that catch your eye – sequins, poster paints, feathers or potato peelings – and Maxi will walk you through the basics to create a lo-fi, high glamour look. The perfect way to get ready for your evening with BID, Ausform, or a chance encounter…* *participants should bring their own make up to the workshop. No need to buy anything new! Just bring whatever make up or face paint you have at home, and anything else that looks like it might be good to stick on your face or wrap round your head.

BÉTON BRUTE by RACHAEL CLERKE ausformmicrofest15.wordpress.com
Time: 7:30pm Venue: The Cube Price: £10/8 Somewhere in a great European megacity, somewhere on the cusp of a new era, a middle-aged architect hosts the last ever episode of life-as-we-know-it. And let’s face it: when it comes down to it, it’s just portland cement, water, aggregate, air and the proletariat VS The Man. A satirical drag eulogy for a world past its use-by-date. Hosted by washed up default man/proto-god figure Archibald Tactful, and accompanied by antivirtuoso drag king punk house band The Great White Males – Béton Brute is a gratuitously sleazy and joyfully noisy critique of alpha-masculinity and the built environment. Audience feedback: ‘Eric Pickles meets Pussy Riot. Phenomenal polemic against penis-propelled planning.’ ‘excellent…more performance like this please – louder louder louder’ ‘like a concrete kiss’ Rachael Clerke is a young woman artist based in Bristol who likes dressing up as wealthy older men. Her last show How to achieve redemption as a Scot through the medium of Braveheart featured Alex Salmond, Mel Gibson and Donald Trump and won the Ideastap Underbelly Award in 2014. rachaelclerke.com | @rachaelclerke photo by Paul Samuel White

Bachelors of a Different Sort Author: Title: Publisher: ISBN-10:
John Potvin Bachelors of a different sort Manchester University Press 978-0-7190-8499-7
Synopsis The bachelor has long held an ambivalent, uncomfortable and even at times unfriendly position in society. This book carefully considers the complicated relationships between the modern queer bachelor and interior design, material culture and aesthetics in Britain between 1885 and 1957. The seven deadly sins of the modern bachelor (queerness, idolatry, askesis, decadence, decoration, glamour and artifice) comprise a contested site and reveal in their respective ways the distinctly queer twinning of shame and resistance. It pays close attention to the interiors of Lord Ronald Gower, Alfred Taylor, Oscar Wilde, Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts, Edward Perry Warren and John Marshall, Sir Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, Noel Coward and Cecil Beaton. Richly illustrated and written in a lively and accessible manner, Bachelors of a different sort is at once theoretically ambitious and rich in its use of archival and various historical sources. About the Author Dr John Potvin is Associate Professor in the Department of Art History and Director of the Ph.D. Humanities Program at Concordia University, Montreal, where he teaches on the intersections of art, design and fashion. His research explores the relationship between subjectivity, interior design and space as well as the complexities that cut across contemporary and historical art and fashion. His work also addresses the ways the male body, masculinity and male sexualities, in particular, are performed, represented, understood, critically evaluated, memorialized and perceived through various design and visual cultures in Europe since the late 19th century.

Temple Quarter This month marks an important step in the Bristol Arena project: five contractors have been shortlisted to build the venue. We have also scheduled two engagement sessions for the public to find out about what is contained in the two planning applications, due to be submitted at the end of this month. Continuing our series looking at key projects within the Zone, this month we took a closer look at heat networks. We also got to know energy company OVO Energy, who have been based in the Zone for three years. Five contractors shortlisted to build the Bristol Arena The Bristol Arena is one step closer after a bidders’ day for contractors interested in building the venue. Five contractors have been shortlisted for the job: BAM Construction Ltd, Bouygues UK, Sir Robert McAlpine, Laing O’Rourke and Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd, and the preferred bidder will be announced in February 2016. Heat Networks: Building cutting edge infrastructure to support our city district heating pipes on the underside of Arena Island bridge This month we take a closer look at the heat networks that Bristol City Council are developing across the city. The networks will provide companies in the Zone with a more cost-effective, lower carbon energy source, ultimately reducing carbon emissions by around 1,300 tonnes per year. Business Profile: OVO Energy The Canteen at OVO’s offices OVO are an energy company with a difference: impressive green credentials, high customer satisfaction levels, a great company culture – and they work in the Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone. We got an insight into what makes them stand out from the crowd.
