OUT BRISTOL WELCOME
“The definitive destination for the LGBT+ communities in the dual city region of the West of England.”
Welcome to Out Bristol an independent community magazine and website for the LGBT+ communities of the West of England. Established in 2008 as an independent free access website and guide that joins up the dots to create a hub linking to further support and information. The website and guide quickly turned into a magazine with the same aims as the website as a hub, showcasing what’s on in the region for LGBT+ people. This developed to linking with the tourism board to showcase the great things happening in the city region. The site is now the LGBT+ tourism site for the region, with links to information on where to stay, attractions, festivals and the LGBT+ Scene. We have an open source policy for the site, magazine and social media which means all outbristol
outbristol
content comes directly from the source as they have sent it #nofilter. Our communities are diverse and editing content to one single voice when we are many voices does not allow for free expression. Out Bristol has over 80 contributors via its social media, website and magazine and we welcome people to contribute to the website and magazine as the more voices the better. Out Bristol is your virutal community centre, home of your Out Bristol Magazine. We’re a hub hosting a space to plug your events, social groups and news and we’re 100% independent and non for profit. We’re whatever you want us to be. We would like to thank you for visiting us and supporting Out Bristol. WWW.OUTBRISTOL.CO.UK

The story of the wildest night in the history of the capital’s most iconic gay venue! It’s 1988 and queer London is partying hard under the spectre of AIDS, the scrutiny of the press and the shadow of Clause 28. When Princess Diana dreams of a wild night out away from the long lenses of the paparazzi and the ruthless Royals at the Palace, best buddies Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett know there is only one place to take her: the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. The only trouble is: how the hell are they going to get one of the most famous faces in the world through the door without blowing her cover? Their night at the Tavern is the stuff of legend. Desmond O’Connor’s irreverent yet insightful new musical reveals that what they learnt about themselves and each other would shock and propel them through the final years of their tragically shortened lives. Recently quoted in the Advocate as “the generational heir to the leather & kink world, first manifested in the art of Tom of Finland” Matt Spike headlines the Transform exhibition and one of the hosts at UK Leather Pride. His work masterfully captures the external transformation his subjects go through when they put on their “gear “to embody their fetish. Matt Spike’s skill is that his photographs captures his subjects intersectionality with depth, sensitivity and passion which give great integrity to his portrail of the fetish communities. Where do you get your inspiration from? I first get my inspiration from my own sexual fantasies. I also like to use fashion photography as inspiration for styles of image, colours, rendering and lighting. I also am interested in the ideas my models have. What kind of camera do you use? I use a digital SLR camera and have done since I started. I’m not very happy in a dark room, at least not a photographic one! So working with digital cameras and software is perfect for me. How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? It depends. If I am shooting for my own projects, then I have full control. If I am shooting for companies or any kind of other entity, sometimes I take a brief. Some of my recent work with some stores have given me entire creative freedom. In addition to this, people have commissioned work that I produced off my own back and used it as club flyers or adverts. So it varies. But I guess I am happiest when I’m working for myself with no art direction or brief.

Matt Spike Photographer / Stylist / Artist /mattspikephoto.com
How important are personal projects to you ? Personal projects are incredibly important because of the creative freedom that working on my own ideas gives. They also enabled me to express myself fully, and get across some of my political or cultural views about things. So they are very important. How much preparation goes into a shoot? Again, this depends. Sometimes I think a mission to take portraits of people in their fetish gear, playing or simply posing. In this case, I have very good studio lighting techniques and don’t particularly need a lot of preparation, particularly if the model has very good fetish gear. On larger projects, outdoor shoots, or some location shoots, I like to prepare well in advance. For example, with UK Leather Pride, we spent a long time working out locations, gear, and the kind of message we wanted to get over. How much do you do in post production? I apply filters to change the ambience and mood of the photo, I also use postproduction to bring certain things in and out of focus. I’ve also used postproduction to stick to various images together in the past. Most changes I make to pictures tend to not occur in Photoshop or Illustrator but are usually apply changes as I’m shooting in Lightroom.
Feature: Leather and kink heir Photographer / Stylist / Artist /mattspikephoto.com
What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? I wish that I knew that it doesn’t always require taking hundreds of photos in order to make a good photo. Sometimes concentrating very hard can result in less frames but better images. Describe your photographic style? How did you develop your style? I would describe my work as moody, provocative, sometimes humorous, sometimes dark. My style I suppose developed from starting off in a very small studio with just one flash head which meant that I was using a lot of shadow and this led to a sense of darkness and enclosure within my images. Matt Spike photography Show is being held for 1 day only as part of UK Leather Pride on Saturday 23rd September 2017 at Lakota Bristol the show is free entry.

Literature
Free to be me Author: Title: Publisher: ISBN-10:
Lori Streich / Rosa Fanti
Free to be Me Tangent Books 1910089362
Synopsis Freedom Youth celebrated its 20th Birthday in 2015. Rosa didn’t want this important milestone to pass unnoticed, so we started talking with each other and then with Off the Record and Outstories about it. This led us to approach the Heritage Lottery Fund. They generously agreed to fund an oral history project to tell Freedom’s story in the words of the people who set it up, who have been or are its members, and who have worked for Freedom over the years. We interviewed 25 people, and heard from many more past and present members who filled in surveys. They spoke or wrote about the difference that being a part of Freedom has made to their lives, and how it has supported and enabled young people to be out, and to feel comfortable with their sexuality and identity. Most of all, Freedom has always been a place where young people can just enjoy themselves as themselves - whatever their identities. Identity is an important issue for young people, and for Freedom as a whole. Over its 21 years, the whole question of identity has changed and Freedom has changed with it. Initially, Freedom Youth defined itself as an LGB group (lesbian, gay and bisexual). By 2006, it was an LGBT group (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). In 2016, it is an LGBTQ+ group, widely inclusive and including those who are queer/questioning and others. We have reflected this change throughout Free to be me. We have tried to use the right abbreviation (LGB, LGBT, LGBTQ+) in the appropriate time period as we’ve told Freedom’s story. What hasn’t changed is Freedom’s core service. It has run sessions in central Bristol every Tuesday evening (barring Christmas and similar) for 21 years. It is one of the oldest, and possibly the longest continuously running social and support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people in the UK. We want to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund for enabling us to record this previously hidden history, and everyone who contributed their stories and who gave their support to this project. Without you, we could not have told this story.

God’s Own Country 15
Venue: Watershed Bristol / Picturehouse Bath Date: Fri 1 - Mon 18 Sept Director: Francis Lee Cast: Josh O’Connor, Alec Secareanu, Gemma Jones Length: 104 mins Bristol Tickets: www.watershed.co.uk Bath Tickets: www.picturehouses.com It is rare that a film comes along which so masterfully captures what its like to be a gay man living in a rural communityin the UK. The loneliness, isolation of day to day life, living and working in a close knit enviroment, build around hetrosexually, the pressures of family and their interdependent relationships and their expectations. God’s Own Country delivers this and then takes this tension to new levels with the sensitive yet passionate introduction of the journey a young farmer has when attrated to another man. Captivating and broodingly beautiful, God’s Own Country is the award winning debut feature from writer/director Francis Lee. Bracingly open hearted, this is a thrillingly romantic story set in the heart of rural Yorkshire. Both poignant and moving, this finely crafted British film features a host of standout performances, marking it out as an absolute must see. Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor) works long hours on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. But when a handsome Romanian migrant worker (Alec Secareanu) arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. As they begin working closely together during lambing season, an intense relationship starts to form which could change Johnny’s life forever.
Culture: Film
God’s Own Country Set against a stunning Yorkshire backdrop, God’s Own Country is the award-winning debut feature film from British writer/director Francis Lee. Poignant, romantic and unforgettable, the film features standout performances from an impressive cast. Touching on issues of contemporary rural life and a young generation’s aspirations for building a better future, Lee reveals the strength and intimacy that can flourish in even the most seemingly isolated and hardened of human spirits. Critically lauded and presented at films festivals worldwide, this is guaranteed to be one of the most celebrated and significant films of the year. God’s Own Country is on national release on the 1 September 2017. Many cinema’s are showing the film in the region from the Watershed in Bristol, The Little Picture House in Bath and the film will be on demand if you prefer to watch it in your own home.
Honey Dijon Photo: Manu + Pascal www.manuandpascal.com
Culture: Music
Honey Dijon Honey Dijon was born and raised in Chicago the home of house music, but has been living in NYC for many years. Like many involved in the scene, her love affair with music began upon hearing her parent’s soul and r&b records at home. Soon she wanted to be the one dropping the needle on the record whenever they held parties in the family basement and the lure of club life soon followed. Before long she was obsessively collecting her own music from hallowed stores like Imports Etc and Gramaphone in Chicago, all the while honing her own personal style. It was while hanging out in these stores where Honey met and formed a long lasting friendship with Derrick Carter, who became a mentor. It was he who introduced her to the underground of Chicago where she was exposed to the sounds of jacking house and Detroit techno. After relocating to New York City, Honey also met another music giant Danny Tenaglia, whose legendary sets at Twilo were also a major source of inspiration. “Danny heavily influenced my sound as a DJ’, says Honey. “The drama of his delivery and risk taking always informed me of how I wanted to present music. Of course, Derrick and Chicago house were also very influential in my development as an artist, so it’s this combination of Chicago and New York that has helped me develop my signature sound.” Still preferring vinyl as a format, there is something hugely authentic about the way Honey mixes, fusing the bump of Chicago with more classic New York sounds and other European influences. Her sets are known for their strong programming, passion and integrity. The art of the mix itself is also very important to Honey as anyone who has witnessed her play can testify about her deft mixing skills and the way she dexterously flows between house or techno with a warm, hypnotic feel. She has played at many of the best venues around the world including esteemed underground haunts like Panorama Bar and Harry Klein in Germany, Sub Club in Glasgow, Output and Sankeys in New York, Ushuaia in Ibiza and of course Smart Bar in Chicago. In the studio, Honey brings her unique perspective and experience to her productions as well. Of course heritage sounds are at the rock bed of what she does, but far from churning out throwback sounds, she makes sure new ideas are at the forefront. For evidence of this look no further than her releases and remixes on Classic Records and Leftroom. In fact this cultural star recently mixed a retrospective compilation for the legendary Classic Music label as well being commissioned to create the soundtrack for a recent Louis Vuitton Menswear shows. With her charisma, style and broad understanding of electronic music and upcoming gigs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Amsterdam, Germany, Spain, and Paris to name a few there seems to be no stopping Miss Dijon.

The Phoenix has been prominent to the Bristol Pub scene for generations, since 1850 to be exact! It is still alive and kicking today! Being the only pub right next to Bristol’s Cabot Circus, it is virtually the only place in Cabots to have proper home cooked food and a good selection of quality, locally produced ales (our breweries are all Bristol born and bred‌or from around the vicinity) as well as crisp imported lager. On top of that the Phoenix are the only very few places in Bristol that welcomes families with children and pets.

EP Warren’s Classical Erotica” & Out Stories AGM Venue: The Old Council Chamber, Wills Memorial Building, Queens Rd, Bristol, BS8 1RJ Date: Sat 7th October 2017 Speaker: Dr Jen Grove Time: 14:30-17:30 Information: outstoriesbristol.org.uk Jen Grove: EP Warren’s Classical erotica: LGBT+ activism and objects from the past Edward Perry Warren (1860-1928) is best known for giving his name to the “Warren Cup”, an ancient Roman goblet with explicit scenes of men having sex together (now in the British Museum). The Classical antiquities Warren collected at the beginning of the twentieth century include many of those we now turn to for visual evidence of homosexual acts in the ancient world. Drawing on original archive work, this talk will explore how Warren used such artefacts from ancient Greece and Rome to campaign for the acceptance of same-sex relationships in the modern world. Warren was particularly influenced by John Addington Symonds and his Greek-inspired idea of a comradely type of love between highly virile men. This talk will also explore some of the problems of looking to Warren, the objects he collected, and the type of ancient relationship he was inspired by – between older and younger partners – for LGBT+ activism and education today. The talk will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting of OutStories Bristol (very brief!). Everyone is welcome to both the AGM and talk. Admission and refreshments are free but a small donation towards the running costs of OutStories Bristol would be appreciated. Please book via website above. Dr Jen Grove is an Engaged Research Fellow in the Centre for Medical History at the University of Exeter. She is currently employed on a Wellcome Trust-funded project ‘Rethinking Sexology: The Cross-Disciplinary Invention of Sexuality: Sexual Science Beyond the Medical, 1890-1940’. She is the editor of a forthcoming book Sculpture, Sexuality and History: Encounters in Literature, Culture and the Arts from the Eighteenth Century to the Present (Palgrave, 2017, with Jana Funke). Jen works closely with LGBT+ activists and support groups, as well as museums, schools, youth workers and health practitioners to explore how artefacts from the past can get people talking about sex, relationships, gender and sexuality today.
